Since the prompts were meant to be fluffy fall/halloween prompts, I had to spin this a little to make it work, but I hope you like it nonny.

The bedroom was dark when Steve came in and quietly got ready for bed.

You'd gone to bed hours ago and were seemingly sound asleep or as soundly as you could be at 7 months pregnant.

Climbing into bed, Steve laid his head back and stared up at the ceiling, still not tired enough to sleep.

Reaching over, he placed his hand on your swollen stomach and smiled when the baby kicked at his hand. He or she was clearly awake for a conversation.

"Steve," you mumbled in your sleep.

"Sorry," he said, guilty.

"S'ok," you replied, moving your hand so it was on top of his. "You can talk to the baby."

"I'll be quiet," he promised. Then he pushed the blankets aside and repositioned himself so his head was by your belly.

He spoke so softly and so closely to your belly that while you couldn't hear what he was saying, you could feel the vibrations on your skin.

You strained you ears to make out the conversation but only heard the word 'pumpkin'.

"What are you talking about?" you asked.

"We're discussing future Halloween costumes," Steve replied. "I promised to not let you dress our baby up like a pumpkin."

"What? Why?"

"Why were we discussing Halloween costumes or why not a pumpkin?" Steve asked. He kissed your belly and then returned to the top of the bed.

"Both?" you asked, tired and confused.

"Because your belly reminded me of a pumpkin and everyone dresses their babies as pumpkins," Steve replied with a shrug.

You blinked at him, unsure how to even respond to that.

"Go back to sleep," Steve said with a smile. "And if you really want to dress the baby as a pumpkin, I won't stop you."

Chris & Ellie Series: Episode 30

Hello my friends, I hope you are all doing well. Or as well as can be expected. My heart is hurting this week.. between what happened in Texas as well as the death of two elderly family members during the last 48 hours. Neither death came as a shock, but to come back to back like that was a shock to the sense.

Thank you as always for being patient with me when it comes to updating this story. It’s actually been almost 6 years to the day that I started writing this series. And if I can get my writing mojo back on track for these two, I’m hoping to finish it in the next year. 🤞

Episode 29

Episode 30: The First Date

January 8, 2015

"Are you going to tell me where we're going yet?" Ellie asked as Chris navigated LA traffic.

"If I told you, it'd ruin the surprise," he replied, tossing her a coy grin.

"Fine, but remember what goes around comes around," Ellie replied, playfully crossing her arms with a huff. "And I will figure this out."

"You're welcome to try," Chris teased.

Ellie spent the next thirty minutes or so trying to guess their destination, using highway signs as clues, with little success. It wasn't until she started seeing the signs for the Griffith Observatory that she figured it out.

Wanting to test her theory, she made what she hoped came out as an offhand comment. "You know, I've never been to the observatory. I hear it's a great place."

Chris didn't reply, but she caught the small smile that pulled at the corner of his lips.

She smiled smugly to herself.

Sunset was only thirty minutes away when Chris took the exit for the observatory and park. The road was long and all uphill, offering a gorgeous view of the city below.

It was all amazing until Ellie saw a sign at the entrance to the parking lot saying that the observatory was “Closed for a Private Event”.

"Are you sure we're allowed to be up here?" she asked, calling Chris's attention to the sign.

"We're exactly where we're supposed to be," he assured her.

"But the -" she started and then it dawned on her. Their date was "the private event" on the sign. "How?"

"It might not seem like it, but I'm kind of famous," Chris said as he parked the car. After he turned the car off, he looked at her and gave an awkward "what can you do" shrug.

"Only kind of famous?" she asked, raising her eyebrow.

"I called someone who called someone," Chris explained as he reached for her hand. "You've given me a second chance and I want to do this right. I don't use my fame for my own benefit very often, but this is one of my favorite places in LA and I wanted to bring you here. This is our first date and I wanted it to be amazing. That wouldn't be possible if we were constantly interrupted by people wanting to take a picture with me or get an autograph."

"I hadn't even thought of that," Ellie admitted. "I guess that's something I need to start taking into consideration."

"It's a fact of my life," he said with a small shrug. "And it will affect everyday life, especially here in LA."

Chris didn't say it, but they both knew that it would be something she'd have to get use to. Or decide if it was something she could get use to.

"It's not something we have to worry about tonight," she reminded him. "We'll figure it out as we have to. But right now, I want to know what you have planned for us."

"All in good time," Chris said with a grin. "Starting with sunset."

Getting out of the car, he led her onto the main patio of the observatory where they could watch the sunset over Los Angeles.

As they waited for the sun to set, they talked about how warm the day had been, especially when compared to the weather back in Oregon and Massachusetts, but their conversation faded away as the sky started to change colors.

"This might be the best view in LA," Ellie whispered.

"Uh huh," Chris agreed, though his eyes weren't on the sky, but on Ellie's face. The best view in the world, he thought.

As the last of the sun's orange red tones faded into the darkening blue of night, the lights of the city took precedence, creating their own sense of awe.

"If this is what LA looks like, I can only imagine what New York City or even Boston looks like," Ellie said.

"Those are breathtaking, too," Chris told her. "I'll add it to the list of date ideas I have."

"You have a list of dates?" Ellie asked, turning to look at him. "Can I see it?"

"Well, it's a mental list right now," Chris explained with a sheepish grin. "But maybe I'll write it down for you."

"I hope going to another Red Sox game is on that list," Ellie said.

"The very top," Chris assured her as he held out his hand. "Are you ready to go inside?"

Ellie nodded her head and took his hand, letting him lead the way.

Once inside, they were greeted by an employee who Chris had arranged to give them a private tour of the facility. In reality, he probably could have led the tour himself, but he had wanted Ellie to have the best experience he could give her.

The tour took them roughly an hour and came to an end in the Gunther Depths of Space exhibit. Below the large planets hanging from the ceiling was a table for two that had been set up with a catering staff waiting to serve them dinner.

"Another perk of being slightly famous?" Ellie teased when she spotted the table.

"I wanted this date to be out of this world," Chris said with a shrug.

Ellie snickered at his pun and sat down after he'd pulled her chair out for her.

"So what do you think?" Chris asked, once they had been left alone to enjoy their meal.

"It's amazing," Ellie replied before listing her favorite things.

"Wow," Chris said once she took a breath. "And to think, we haven't even seen the best part yet."

"There's more?" Ellie gaped at him.

Chris just grinned and took another bite of his dinner. He successfully evaded Ellie's attempts to get him to tell her what was next on their itinerary as they made small talk in between bites.

When they finished eating, their tour guide returned and led them up to the planetarium.

"Oh my god," Ellie gasped and grabbed Chris's arm as she took in the domed screen.

"Just wait," he said as he led her to their seats. "It's amazing."

What followed was a journey through time and space with live storytelling that left Ellie in awe. 

Her reaction made Chris add coming back to the observatory to his mental list of date ideas. After all, there were more shows to see and more to experience during the day.

After the show, they thanked the staff and left the observatory. They spent a few more minutes looking at the lights of Los Angeles before they got back into the car.

Conversation flowed easily between them as Chris drove, most of it about the show they'd just seen.

It wasn't until Chris took the exit for her part of town that Ellie realized where they were.

The night had been perfect, and she wasn't ready for it to end.

"Fancy a milkshake?" she asked, hoping he'd say yes.

Chris nodded his head. He hadn't been ready to call it a night either. "A milkshake sounds perfect."

Hey nonny! Thanks for this fantastic prompt! I wrote most of this the other day and I had another ending in mind.. but it just wasn't working with me... but oh well.

Ari loves you like a best friend.

You sigh into your drink as another woman stops Ari on his way back to your table. You avert your eyes, not wanting to see the same routine they all do when they see him in a bar.

She’ll touch his arm.

He’ll flex his biceps.

She’ll giggle and coo over his “big strong muscles”.

He’ll give her a panty melting smile.

She’ll give him her number.

He’ll pocket the number and promise to call her.

She’ll go back to her friends, who will all giggle and steal glances at him.

He’ll come back to your table and drop into his seat like nothing has happened.

“What’s that face about?” he asks, picking up his beer and taking a swig of it.

“Just thinking,” you lie as you adjust your expression. He doesn’t know you’re in love with him and it’s better that way. Afterall, you are the opposite of his type, judging by the women he’s gone out with.

“Sounds serious,” he says, leaning forward. Then, because he doesn’t have a serious bone in his body, adds, “Tell Ari what’s troubling you.”

“I’m on my period and I have cramps,” you say, knowing that will make him uncomfortable. “So I’ve decided to go home.”

He cringes at the womanly stuff, but his expression turns to a frown when you say you’re leaving. “You haven’t finished your beer,” he says.

“I don’t need the calories,” you state as you stand up. “I ordered an Uber so you can stay and -” You motion in the general direction of the woman he was flirting with. “- do whatever.”

You don’t wait for him to respond as you cross the bar as quickly as you can. You have no intention on going straight home, instead, you plan to walk the two blocks to the ice cream parlor where you’ll get your favorite ice cream and eat it while you wait for the Uber to pick you up.

It’s still early in the evening, so you aren’t alone on the street as you walk to your next destination lost in thought. You know breaking ties with Ari would make your life a little easier, but the thought of not having him in your life is more heartbreaking than watching him flirt with nameless women in front of you.

You’re waiting for the light to change around the corner from the ice cream shop when an all to familiar voice says, “I thought you said you ordered an Uber.”

Spinning around, you stare at Ari in shock. “What are you doing here?”

“Trying to figure out what the fuck is wrong with you,” he counters, pulling you out of the way as another group of people walk past.

One of the women in the group stops and looks at his hand on your arm before looking at you. “Are you ok?” she asks.

Ari smartly let’s go and takes a step back, but you nod and assure the woman that you’re fine.

She glares at him and then takes his picture of the two of you with her phone. “Just in case,” she says then she walks away.

Ari curses under his breath before turning to you. “Why are you acting like this?” he asks, his tone calmer, likely to avoid anyone else stopping.

“Why are you following me?” you counter. “I told you I was leaving so you could go home with that wannabe model.”

Ari lets out a satisfied noise. “And there it is,” he says in a sarcastic tone. “The real reason you left the bar.”

“What is that supposed to mean?” you demand.

“You always do this,” he says, throwing his hands up. “It’s Thursday, our night. Yeah, I flirted with her, but I wasn’t going to ditch you for her. I don’t even know her.”

You roll your eyes. Not knowing a woman has never stopped him from taking her home.

“You know what, fine,” Ari says. “Leave. Go home. I’ll see you later.”

“Do you ever ask why I get this way?” you call after his retreating back, the words coming out of your mouth before you can stop them. 

He pauses and turns to look at you, his face unreadable.

“Maybe it’s because -” His eyes roll, obviously expecting another dumb excuse and you get control of your tongue. “- y’know what, never mind, fuck you, Ari Levinson.”

Taking advantage of the green light, you race across the street, embarrassed that you almost spilled your secret to that asshole.

A series of honks makes you turn and you see Ari running across the street, traffic lights be damned.

“Because why, damn it?” he demands once he reaches you. “I fucking need to know.”

“Ari, please, don’t,” you beg softly. “I -”

“Because I can tell you why I go home with those wannabe models,” he says. “Because I can’t be with the one person I want to be with.” He tilts your chin so he can look you in the eye. “You.”

Your heart skips a beat as you stare at him. “What?” Your brain is too stunned to say anything more.

“It’s always been you,” he says. “Just you. Perfect you.”

“But I’m not your type,” you state.

“You are my type,” he argues. “I only date the wannabes because they don’t look like you, don’t act like you… because they aren’t you. If I can’t have you, I don’t want a substitute. For the longest time, I’ve just been your best friend and I accepted that fact. But I want more, I need more. I want you, all of you.”

“You do?”

“I do,” he whispers. “But the question now is, do you?”

“Yes,” you say, on the verge of tears. “Ari, yes, always.”

“Thank fuck,” he says before he pushes you up against the brick wall of the closest building and kisses you, ignoring the cat calls and the ‘get a room’ comments from people passing you on the street.

That first kiss is better than you ever imagined it would be. The second kiss is even better than the first.

Pulling away, Ari rests his forehead against yours and says, “How about we get some ice cream then go back to your place. I think the rest of this conversation would be better in private.”

"Yes," you reply, looking down at your hand that clasped in his. "Ari."

His eyes meet yours in question.

"I love you," you say, needing him to know the full extent of your feelings for him.

"I love you, too," he replies.
