“Why do people hate chaol”
We hate chaol because for the longest time Celaena/aelin hated chaol. When reading you somewhat absorb the feelings of certain characters, with c/a’s dislike of him, we disliked him. She disliked him because he didn’t tell her of the threat to nehemia’s life which caused her to spiral into despair and we sympathised with her, after all the death of a friend you felt like you could’ve prevented is heartbreaking. It’s why due to ToD many people came to like chaol because the book was free of the bias that came with c/a’s pov.
And lots of people were able to overcome that and like chaol and ToD, some were not and some (like me) are somewhat on the fence

⚠️Spoiler Alert - Queen of Shadows (book 5 of TOG)
Okay, guys, I am currently reading Tower of Dawn, but today I was remembering something in Queen of Shadows.
Chapters 59 and 60 is when Manon and Aelin met and were in a fight. I remember being very disappointed by the whole thing. Aelin defeated Manon very easily, in my opinion. Now let's analyze this:
Aelin, a 19 year old "human" girl (without magic at that point).
Manon an Ironteeth Blackbeak witch, over 100 years old.
Both have had heavy training and were bred to be lethal killers. We all know that Aelin is powerful, strong, lethal, intelligent, etc etc etc ..... But so is Manon.
And I feel that SJM simply forgot or chose to leave out the fact that Manon had the same hard and tough training that Aelin had, and even more so because she had 100 years more training. I don't erase the fact that Aelin is very good at fighting, but honestly? That fight was... I don't even have the words to describe it.
Did it take making Manon lose like that to prove that Aelin is skilled? I have no problem with Manon losing a fight, she is not invincible and although I love her, I am a realist. SJM wrote several comments about how well Manon fights, how she was kicking Aelin's ass and I think that was just her trying to "balance" and not have Manon lose in such a forced way.
I understand that Manon had to lose and honestly that's not a problem, but I had the impression that she was not her. Manon was what, unfocused? Underestimating her opponent? Blinded by anger and being smug? This seemed to me to run away from the character that Manon really is.
Anyway, this is just a thought of mine, this is not an "anti certain character" or "anti the author" post, this is my opinion regarding a scene where I thought Manon deserved a better fight.

I just find it ironic how people are so quick to hate “bitchy” and “hateful” female characters but love their male counterparts. I hate how Nesta was only liked when she “changed” to fit in with the IC. And it’s just infuriating to see because female characters are always put down unless they show stereotypical traits - such as being kind and compassionate. And there’s nothing wrong with that but people need to stop attacking female book characters if they don’t fit their narrative of how a female should act. This is why I always love female characters that are unnecessary bitchy because I understand them more. I relate to them more. They’re aware of their flaws and can hold themselves accountable.
Throughout the series SJM has always defended Feyre and Rhys’ actions. Don’t get me wrong I don’t hate Feyre - cant say the same about Rhys - but she’s not a good person and people need to stop claiming she is. Even the characters don’t realize that they’re not good people. If I’m being honest if Rhys was portrayed as a villain or anti hero I would’ve absolutely loved him as a character. But throughout the series it’s always states how he’s a good guy but misunderstood person. How his actions are for the good of everything when he doesn’t shitty things. I feel like even sjm believes he’s a good person and she continues to glorify him. Rhys would’ve been so much more enjoyable as a character if people called him out, if he was aware he wasn’t a good guy, and if he took accountability of the bad shit he’s done.
Idk I just feel like we should treat female characters the same way as male characters instead of holding them up to this standard.
I agree with this hun. Rhys as a villain would be so...satisfying.
Kinda like the Darkling but less problematic. I think I'd like it if Rhys actually just got called out more too. Because I remember in ACOWAR he said some snippy comment about Nesta and Feyre goes OFF. And it was actually super nice to see the discussion afterwards where he was like, she's your sister, you have every right to call me out on my bs? I was like aww Rhys. You're not ignorant .
ACOSF Rhys was a complete 180 and I almost feel like it's a disservice to his character as he's been set up in the past. He's supposed to be this ruler who has done very bad things, things he cannot get over, and he only ever exercises that sort of cruel power over bad people. So to see him use it on Nesta was slightly disturbing and also a bit uncharacteristic of him in my opinion. I think a lot of the actions he chose to do in ACOSF seemed wrong and a lot of us hated them, but I feel like there are things Rhys did in past books where we were like okay calm down. But this was soooooo out of bounds and not as easily defendable. And I get it. He's supposed to be this person that is not just super bad but also really super good with bad boy persona for the outside world. The problem is he is a good person, but he makes bad decisions, i.e., he's written to make bad decisions.
As for female characters getting hated on for traditionally male characters? 100 times yes. This holds true for Nesta obviously. But you see it also in how Aelin is looked at. They call her the bitch queen. You see it in many portrayals of women in GoT. Cersei. Daenerys. Like gimme a woman with a temper, foul language, more sexually adventurous/more active sexually, is rude/cruel/mean with a sad backstory, and you'll probably have a bunch of people hate her. You'll also have a bunch of girls love her too. It just works out that way because of our society and how even in fictional worlds, we can't let go of the subconscious perceptions and expectations we have over women or female-presenting characters and those associated characteristics.
And I agree. Nothing wrong with a woman who is "typical stereotype." Technically, I fit more of those characteristics too. In some aspects anyways. If we're being honest, I'm more of an Elain in how I portray myself even if my thoughts are more aligned with how Nesta thinks. And my inner Nesta (lol is this a thing? Can this be a thing? Our inner Nesta?) comes out sometimes. Because I can't always be as sweet as Elain (at least outwardly. we all know Elain isn't actually a nice person). And that's because I'm human and I'm flawed and that's okay. I think I'd lose my mind if I knew someone in my life that was just like me but I got hated on for it and they got thirsted over for it.
Point being, if you're a jerk, you're a jerk. If you're a nice person, hey, you're a nice person. And at the end of the day, it shouldn't matter if you're a guy, a girl, neither, both, or anything. Rude is rude. Mean is mean. Nice is nice. Sweet is sweet. If you hold one to standards and not the other because of a different gender, then you are as the poets say, sexist.
Thank you for the ask, I enjoyed this little ranting session.

10) Which character do you ship yourself most with and why?
11) Ships that annoy you and why
12) Do you ship Amren and Varian or would you rather Amren remain alone?
13) Any theories about where Amren came from and what her real form is?
15) Do you want Tamlin to die? Are you pro redemption arc? How do want his arc to end?
16) Which villain out of both series do you hate the most?
22) Do you prefer the Celaena story arc or the Aelin arc? Or do you find that the difference between the two is simply character growth?
23) Long haired rowan or short haired rowan?
24) Which character would you most like to hook up with?
31) Did you ship feylin in acotar or were you always side-eyeing it suspiciously?
32) How do you think Feyre will handle being in the spring court again?
33) Head canons for your otp!
34) Name a ship you hope ends like the titanic… (+acosf)
42) Favorite funny moment from ToG
45) Are you down for Rowaelin/Feysand babies in the epilogues or would you want them to wait?
Hoo boy! Long one! Lol.
10) As much as I don't feel like I have enough of a grasp on her character to write her effectively, I would absolutely let Manon do whatever she wants with me.
11) I don't think I have a ship that annoys me overly much? I have a high bar for ship annoyance these days. There are ones I'm less keen on, but I don't think I've come across one yet that's an anti-ship for me.
12) I don't think I have enough to go off of for their ship! They're given so little time for development that I don't know what to make of them.
13) I have absolutely no Amren theories. I feel like there's not enough contextual evidence to pull one together, at least not for me.
15) Ah, Tamlin. The first of many matches on the fire that is the ACOTAR fandom lol. I... don't hate him? Controverial opinion, I'm sure. But I think he genuinely didn't realize what he was doing to Feyre, which in a way made him more dangerous for her but also leaves room for a redemption arc. I don't think I want him to die. I think he's not in a good place to have a partner right now, but I think there is still room for him to learn and grow.
16) I don't know if I have a villain I particularly hate! For me, I don't divide overly much into "characters I like" and "characters I hate", it's more "characters who resonate with me" and "characters who don't".
22) The Celaena story arc is part of Aelin's arc and we couldn't have one without the other. Both are valid.
23) Both are valid. Long haired Rowan always came across to me as a more ethereal look that we would typically associate with elves or Fae, while short haired Rowan is all strapping muscles and practical warrior.
24) See shipping above. I wasn't kidding when I said Manon can do whatever she wants to me.
31) While I came into TOG pure and unspoiled, I had seen some of The Discourse surrounding ACOTAR before I started reading it. I knew Feylin would not end in a HEA, and I do think that colored my reading.
32) Since in general I love a good healing arc, I would love for Feyre to be able to come to terms with the Spring Court. That being said, I'm not sure the Spring Court is a great place for ANYONE to be right now.
33) I am bad at headcanons, but sure lol. Rowaelin's first child is calm and full of grace, even slightly shy. Neither one of them knows where the child gets it from. The second child gets their attitude and temper from both parents.
34) Again, I don't think there's a ship out there where I'm like "nope, absolutely not!". Shippers can be truly nasty about "my ship" versus "not my ship", and I personally prefer being chill about the whole thing and trying to see the valid point in any ship I come across--even the ones I wouldn't call my OTPs.
42) Hands down, the cake Aelin makes for Rowan in the deleted HOF scene.
45) I am 100% for babies generally, with the caveat that I also want other good things for them! I don't want babies just thrown in because that's what happens next, I want babies who are impactful and meaningful in the story without being the sole reason for existence for their mamas.

aelin galathynius and feyre archeron would've been the most ground-breaking, subversive female characters in fantasy lit. a fallen-princess-turned-assassin, destined to save the realm from an evil king; a village-girl-turned-powerful-fae-queen, taking down the fae patriarchy. and m@@s just.. reduces ALL THAT to basic af self-insert mary sues??? what a freaking waste!!! in the hands of a writer who actually gave a damn, aelin and feyre could've been something special 😔😔😔
Eh, the assassin thing wasn't a special premise (and it's nothing bad in this!! You don't have to be 100% original, you have to make your work original through the depth you give to your characters, world and plot), whilst Fayrug would have been a nice subversion of the classic farmboy-turned-hero. But I wholly agree, both characters would have made terrific flawed, morally-grey, yet eventually heroic figures who could have undergone a great deal of change and growth, external and internal. Who would have been at first forced to act as the circumstances demanded them and later, were ready to take the mantle and make things as they wanted, but not in their colonizer or tyrannical way, but rather after a journey of self-discovery that would have allowed to see them the fucked-upness of their world and the fucked-upness of what they were told and what they thought it was good, so that they could have eventually build a moral compass through which they can truly become heroic figures for the world around them and themselves.
But when you write your characters as flawless OCs for a RPG where your character is supposed to win without much effort, the potential is ruined. What pains me is that antis have so better ideas, which only makes me feel even more bitter because both these series could have been so much more.

this is 100% what happens every single time. it’s insane that they seem to think she’ll be a good colonizer, as if she’s not arguing the same things that every colonizer throughout history has. i mean, to claim she’ll bring art and music and culture to those countries????? did sj/m sleep through history classes or something, bc that’s the only reason i can come up with for how completely blind she was in writing this, especially bc alien said she’d do it to give her children new places to rule. like, sure, her children might be the same “good colonizer” as alien is, but they also might not be since they have alien and rowboat as parents.
god, it makes me sick

unpopular opinion: i don’t like rowan/rowaelin. i’m not here to convince u to unstan lol ppl are allowed to like/dislike things w/o feeling bad about it omg but i hate that some rowan stans are so insensitive when it comes to those who don’t like him! they’re so thirsty for him that they condemn anyone who doesn’t stan him & then excuse his problematic/lowkey triggering actions bc he’s hot and it’s gross. AGAIN not saying ppl can’t like rowan it’s ok lol but it’s more about some stan’s behavior
That’s totally fair my angel. I dislike the vibe that some people are locked out of the fandom for not being a cheerleader for every aspect of the series, and I hope that my followers/mutuals know that if they dislike stuff I like, or like stuff I dislike, expressing their opinions regarding that won’t ever cause me to cut them off (unless it’s like, some truly gross shit, which disliking rowaelin isn’t).
Also I have to say, even tho I do like rowaelin, I understand where you’re coming from about people excusing his actions because he’s hot. I’ve toooooootally seen that. And I’ll just be 100% honest - no shade to anyone, but some of the rowaelin content on this website disturbs me a little bit, in terms what’s considered hot/romantic/acceptable when writing or depicting them in art. I’ve seen some weird stuff defended as hot or even just “not that bad.” Which isn’t necessarily a problem with canon, but your ask was more about stans anyway, so yeah.
A while ago I actually wrote rowaelin meta in response to some other peeps (which was more about Aelin in relation to Rowaelin and how she’s included or not included in discussions of the ship, but it has some thoughts relevant to this ask) so I’m gonna just copy and paste what I wrote below and feel free to read if u want. (It’s like very overdramatic and fiery lmao but anyway).
I agree with a lot of this, but (at risk of derailing ms aelinapologist’s amazing post) I do have a few things to say, which are
1. OP took two whole paragraphs at the beginning of her post to say that the point wasn’t to discourse about rowaelin being abuse or not abuse, it was to talk about how the conversations centering around said abuse consistently display a disturbing lack of empathy for the character who should be the main concern of the debate. So I just find it a bit funny/odd that the replies (including a portion of the one I’m about to make, I admit that) have been like “Yeah great post! And now to discourse about Rowaelin-” but I digress.
2. I have consistently loved reading about Rowan and Aelin and they’re one of my favorite fictional couples. So nothing I’m about to say is intended to be like “GOTCHA they suck and you suck for liking them!!!” Because I like them as well. A lot. And in addition, nothing about this reblog is intended to be shady or confrontational in any way shape or form. I just think this is a great and very needed discussion I’d like to contribute to, so here goes.
3. Even if we look at HoF alone and ignore how things play out later: yes, they are both mean to one another, yes, they are both in a dark place and end up having a mutually positive effect on one another (so I definitely agree that, at least for HoF alone, it’s not a “douchey guy changes for the heroine story”) but. There IS still a power imbalance. I don’t think it’s entirely accurate to say “they were both bad The End” without also bringing up the fact that Rowan is 300 years old and Aelin is 18, and that Rowan is training Aelin and is in a position that gives him a massive amount of control over her, and that he is stronger and more powerful than her physically, magically, and socially (he is a prince and legendary warrior, she is a AWOL teenage princess currently working as a scullery maid).
Maybe I’m reading into it too much, but I really just don’t think that Aelin, a 17 y/o girl going through an unimaginably shitty time, being like “fuck you!!” to this 300 y/o jerk who doesn’t know shit about her is on the same level as aforementioned 300 y/o jerk hitting her, biting her, and telling her she would have been of more use to the world if she’d died when she was eight.
And in addition to that, we see that his behavior effects her a lot more than it effects him. When he verbally tears her down, we see her experience genuine and devastating despair and shame, whereas everything she does and says to him, no matter how snarky or outright cruel, is not having that same effect on him. People always seem to think they’re giving Aelin credit for being a Strong Woman™ by saying “she’s tough! she can handle it!” when in reality… we have evidence for the fact that she kinda can’t handle it. That the way he treats her in the beginning is slowly wearing her down and sending her deeper into a depressive state. And I don’t understand how it somehow reflects poorly on Aelin (or is even misogynist) to acknowledge this. Women, especially literal teenage girls, should not be measured by their tolerance for mistreatment.
All I really wish is that somewhere along the line we’d gotten a genuine apology from Rowan for this besides a throwaway line in KoA about regretting their “brawling.” And again, none of this is to say “see!! it IS abuse!!” it’s just to suggest that, even as an enemies to friends to lovers story, the “enemies” part was not exactly on a level playing field.
4. But with that being said, I could probably forgive the imbalance in their early relationship, mostly because their later relationship, as both friends and lovers, is so amazing and supportive in pretty much every way. And the great thing about enemies to FRIENDS to lovers, like you said, is that 1) none of the assholery occurred during any kind of romantic or sexual relationship or a transition into one, so it was sort of “fair and square” in that way, and 2) they had the opportunity form a solid, platonic foundation of trust and caring before they crossed into the lover territory.
Aaaaaaaaaand then Sarah did a retcon job on HoF which negated… pretty much all of that. I can totally be down with “good old fashioned mutual hatred thaws into caring which grows into love” but once we start hearing shit like “‘Sometimes, you’d be sleeping beside me at Mistward, and it’d take all my concentration not to lean over and bite them. Bite you all over’” and “‘That was the first time I really lost control around you, you know. I wanted to chuck you off a cliff, yet I bit you before I knew what I was doing. I think my body knew, my magic knew. And you tasted… So good. I hated you for it’”……. hhhhhhhhhhh.
I can’t think of many arguments for this NOT contributing at least a little to the “he’s mean because he loves you (and stick it out because someday he’ll figure it out)” trope. And while it might be a bit different because Aelin was quite mean as well, her behavior was just… meanness. Not some sort of weird outlet for repressed sexual attraction/love. I guess I just get flashbacks of “No sweetie, that boy in your class kicks your desk, pulls your hair, and calls you names because he likes you and doesn’t know how to express it.”
And I think this decision on Sarah’s part to go back and say he was into her all along is 1) a result of the mating bond thing she’s so fond of and 2) kind of a panicked backpedalling to the backlash she might have gotten over Rowan’s behavior in HoF? Which is…. so ironic because she made it SO much worse. In my humble opinion, she should have just doubled down on what she originally wrote as enemies-friends-lovers (and had Rowan bring up his early behavior and apologize in some way), and the problem would have been solved. And while I personally feel that I can recognize this for what it is - a shitty retcon - and enjoy the relationship despite it, I don’t think we should talk over people for whom this is a deal-breaker for the ship.
5. I don’t think about all of this and have the reaction that so many “anti tog” people seem to have of “FUCK Rowan he’s ABUSIVE and PREDATORY and I wish he was DEAD!!!” I think there are things to criticize about his behavior and about the way Sarah decided to spin their relationship, but they have had many great moments, especially in the later books, and I don’t think I or anyone else is “shipping abuse” by enjoying that. All of this is just to emphasize how, in OP’s very succinct words, “your inalienable right to enjoy two characters’ dynamic does not outweigh the right to criticise it.” Because there ARE valid things to criticize, and we as Rowaelin shippers (lol.) need to be careful not to conflate ugly hatred with valid criticism when we speak over it.
And because there IS so much ugly hatred for Aelin and her relationship with Rowan on this website, I completely understand why there’s a kind of knee-jerk reaction of jumping to defense of this ship we love. But that impulse, quite frankly, means nothing to me if defense of Rowaelin includes the erasure of Aelin’s canonical experiences. And maybe this is wacky and controversial, but I’m pretty sure we can express our enjoyment of Rowaelin AND keep Aelin as an individual from being swept under the rug.
6. More than saying any of that what I really really want to do (and have been trying to do in the previous paragraphs, but maybe unsuccessfully) is bring the conversation back to OP’s original point which was not “abuse!” or “not abuse!” but about how the ways in which we discuss “abuse or not abuse” often includes a stomach-turning lack of concern for Aelin and some frustratingly reductive arguments. And somehow I have the sneaking suspicion that Rowaelin shippers are reading this post and missing the point, which that this is happening on BOTH sides of the argument.
Everyone is perfectly entitled to ship Rowaelin and argue their opinion about its merits or lack thereof, but when we cover our ears and say “she was mean too she was mean too she was mean too she was mean too la la la la la la la” that’s completely ignoring the genuine pain that she did experience in HoF and the power imbalance that she was subjected to, no matter whether or not we personally feel that it was sufficiently rectified in later books.
And I see this ALL THE TIME, in both the fandom and “anti-fandom”, and I’m honest to god quite sick of it. I’m sick of the willful ignorance of a teenage girl’s pain in order to further an agenda. Yes, it’s more stomach-turning when the agenda is to prove what an evil bitch she is or whatever, but it’s not excusable if your agenda is to prove Rowaelin is great, either! And I don’t understand why we have to throw all nuance out the window and ignore how Dorian hurt her, ignore how Chaol hurt her, ignore how Rowan hurt her, fucking hell, ignore how SAM hurt her, just so we can make our arguments! Because as much as the antis love to scream about “WHAT MESSAGE IS THIS TERRIBLE SHIP SENDING THE TINY GIRL-CHILDREN WHO READ THE BOOKS???” it’s also like, what kind of message is our ongoing discussion of it sending by sweeping a teenage girl’s experiences under the rug when we argue about her relationships?
And like OP said, what have we even got to show for it? No conclusion has been reached, nothing has been achieved besides valuing a romance (or the hatred of that romance and preference for a different romance) over individual characters, namely an individual character who happens to be a teenage girl that has suffered an ungoldy amount - suffered, sometimes, at the hands of male characters we like.
In conclusion, the mass allergy everyone seems to have to giving a shit about Aelin unless its to further their agenda is sickening. If I had a dollar for every time I’ve had to hear about how poor Manon’s character was “ruined” by Manorian (although not directly by DORIAN, of course, because apparently Saint Haviliard can do no wrong) I’d have enough money to buy a lamborghini and drive it off a cliff like I wish I could every time I hear someone’s terrible hot take about how Aelin is complicit in her own alleged abuse. Yet somehow I’ve never heard anyone complain about the damage done to Aelin’s character by any of the male characters, including Rowan. It’s never “Rowan ruined Aelin’s character!!” it’s “Rowaelin sucks and so does Aelin.” In fact, one of the REASONS Aelin sucks in the first place IS Rowan/Rowaelin! What a great implicit message to send to people reading your “critiques”: if you are annoying and #problematic enough, your suffering will be used against you and you will receive no sympathy for it. Cool!
And for other ships, too: it’s never “Chaol and Dorian, while at points a very good for Aelin, also caused her a lot of pain” it’s either “Chaol was right about Aelin in QoS and both he and Dorian are ruined because of her #chaorian” OR, from the fans, who, again, are not off the hook, “Chaol and Dorian and Aelin are BFFs forever #originaltrio.” And as a teenage girl myself, who loves and identifies with Aelin, who is more invested in her story than anyone else’s… I’m just tired. And more than a little appalled. And I wish we could do better.

spill the ☕️ on twilight haters
my feelings @ twilight haters are so perfectly summed up in this post but BASICALLY people who hated twilight hated it bc they were taught to in indirect ways bc society hates women and devalues anything made specifically by/for women by calling it silly/childish/unrealistic etc. any/all criticisms made about bella swan could easily be applied to characters like feyre, aelin, katniss, elide, juliette, etc. but we don’t do that bc all those women started out as feminine soft things and turned to war and killing and became hardened warriors, which somehow makes them more valid than a girl who forges her own future and doesn’t sacrifice her “softness” in the process
and here’s the part that always makes people yell at me: if you didn’t like twilight in middle school (even if you read it) there’s honestly a 90% chance you didn’t like it bc subconsciously you wouldn’t let yourself like it bc you were trying to distance yourself from “other girls” by whatever means possible to fit into a stupid patriarchal society.
NOW… if you hate twilight bc of its blatant lack of representation, stephenie meyer’s torture porn of her female characters (every girl had some sort of abusive storyline at some point), or its mistreatment of native cultures, that’s 100% valid and cool.
but please PLEASE stop telling me in 2018 you hate twilight bc bella is a mary sue or she’s anti-feminist for choosing a guy over “a strong future” or whatever other bs you’re still holding on to bc i’m so damn tired of it
send me a “☕️” and something you want me to spill the tea on
(i promise the rest won’t be as long as this hahahah)

I'm not 100% sure because I haven't read Koa yet, but I think the last line was the same from Tog? where Aelin says "Tell me tomorrow" or something like that!! So sjm closed the circle with the same line from her first book, I think that's why she repeats it so much on every tour, like "look how smart I'm, everything ends connected".
@longsightmyth confirmed that the final line is: “For across every mountain, spread beneath the green canopy of Oakwald, carpeting the entire Plain of Theralis, the kingsflame was blooming.” A bunch of other antis in the comments elaborated on the lowkey stupidity of the line because although apparently SJ/M came up with the last line years ago, she never thought to foreshadow the concept of kingsflame until E0S. This woman cannot outline or foreshadow for her life, and it annoys me so much that she thinks she’s good at it.

Hey, I came across a bunch of anti blogs today and read a bunch of their stuff just because I was curious and one of their arguments was that Rhysand and Rowan are abusive. I get the Rhysand argument because especially in acofas he seemed a little sex-hungry but what did Rowan ever do? I mean, before they were together he was training her and he wasn’t kind... but he has been nothing but good to her since he started to be “with” aelin. What am I missing?
hey girl hey!
So first of all I need to make my opinion very clear on both these topics, for the sake of being candid.
Neither Rowaelin or Feysand are abusive relationships.
Rhys and Feyre having a high sex drive does not mean he is abusive. They are adults, who like having sex. It is 100% consensual and enjoyed immensely by both parties - which is very common in adult relationships.
As for Rowan, antis think Rowan is abusive mostly because of his his actions in HoF. The two instances brought up are always 1) when he bit her and 2) when he punched her (which like c’mon she literally said the mass extinction of his race was justifiable which fucking hell she deserved to be punched for that). As for post HoF, antis often bring up his possessiveness and both of them being (for lack of a more eloquent phrase) super horny.
There honestly in no way validity in either claims. If Rowan was truely mentally abusive like they claim, he would not be subservient to Aelin, nor would she be able to do literally whatever the fuck she wants. She has the power in their relationship. They twist his need for her to be safe (which is a need we all have for our loved ones) and turn it into ‘abuse’ to fit whatever weird narrative they have going on. Genuine mentally/psychologically abusive relationships are not like that.
And they also criticise how often Rowan get’s going on Aelin, but I’ll use my previous argument again. Two adults who love each other, especially in the start of a relationship, think about sex. A lot. And they like having sex.
Antis have this weird thing were they often vilify sex, and that’s so bloody toxic and problematic in and of itself.
They also twist the narrative as much as they can to fit whatever they want their argument to be. You have to remember, these are people (specifically anti-blogs, not people who just don’t like the books) who literally have blogs dedicated to shitting on a YA author, they’re already pretty pathetic.
I hope this somewhat answers your question!

Obviously everyone's fucking pissed about TOD because "SJM just keeps fucking up" but what are your thoughts? Personally, I quite liked it.
Yeah. I liked it. There where moments where I was like, “Who tf is on this editing team that should have caught that and been like you’ll get slaughtered for this?” But overall I thought it was a good book.
There was stuff in the beginning that was her trying to blend culture and it read like she picked and chose what it was she wanted from an existing culture and then slapped it onto a page, but by the end, for me at least, it came together. It was rough in the beginning though and there were moments when I had to remind myself that this was her trying to be better. And I’m honestly not sure where I draw the hard line on cultural appropriation. But again, by the end of the book it stopped reading like she was *trying* and it started to flow seamlessly. For me at least.
I enjoyed the slow burn of all the ships and I FUCKING LOVED Chaol’s arc. It was angsty enough and it fully explained what all the Chaol fans already knew about his character and his reasons for acting the way he did. But I was glad she fully explained stuff (even though at times I found myself wishing she’d have left it for the reader to gather/know from her hints). But I also get that he is a character she loves and she wanted to explain to all the haters—and people who just didn’t get his actions—his motivations for acting the way he did.
Hypermasculinity is her brand. I know that when I open a Maas book, that’s what I’m getting. So I can’t fault her for that. If that’s something that makes people mad, then that’s a problem with them. We can’t change other people, but we can change ourselves. If hypermasculinity is not something you can deal with, then stop reading her books. Change your own behaviors. Don’t try to change Maas. That’s like complaining to your kitchen table for being a table when you want it to be a chair. It was always a table, it’s not fair to ask to suddenly be a chair. That’s on you. Not the table. Lol.
There was some stuff that was repetitive and dragged on for me that I personally would have changed or edited out. But I ain’t judging. THose things included references to Chaol’s back muscles (LOL @rufousnmacska ), Yrene healing similar back injuries with the horse riding clans, and yeah by the end that last big “I broke my oath to Nesryn” thing was a tad annoying/over done to me. But I LOVED the angst. I was just over that particular aspect of it.
It was slow for me in the beginning. But once it got going I enjoyed it. I thought she did a good job with Chaol’s recovery. His actions and inner thoughts were very believable and realistic to me. And I liked how she used the darkness in his spine as a metaphor for the darkness in him. And I did like how she showed that him not loving himself or feeling good about himself or worthy of self love and respect was his biggest roadblock. That’s one of the things that makes him so relatable to me in this series. He’s a legit human and he doesn’t get all the fancyshmancy arcs and stuff that Aelin or Dorian get. He has always had to dig deep. And I liked that we got that through and through.
I LOVED NESRYN’S ARC. AND I SWEAR TO FUCKIN GOD IF I SEE ANOTHER IDIOT POSTING ABOUT HOW IT WAS “anti emigration or immigration” IM GONNA START THROWING SHIT. LOL. I already posted about how disgusting and toxic that shit is ESPECIALLY from people who can’t think outside their privilege.
I’m fucking excited for Kadara and Abraxos to meet! LIKE REALLLY EXCITED.
I SMELL A SPIN OFF WITH BORTE AND FALKAN AND YERAN (that probably includes Nesryn and Sartaq). AND IM HERE FOR ALL OF IT. (Just please for the love of god don’t let the last book turn into acowar. Let the original story go and end the way it was always planned!)
I’m more convinced now that Dorian and Manon are mates/connected. I’d add the Chaol and Yrene “thread” to my post listing the evidence for that. Lol.
The ending dragged on for me a bit. After Duva and Nestaq/Sarryn I was getting annoyed. But that’s just me. And also because it was a descent book, but it had a lot of filler. It could have been 100 pages shorter and been great. And part of that was that Maas spent more time describing things in this book and that’s not what I’m used to with her writing so it bugged me. I like her cuz she gets to the point quickly and then stuff starts rolling. This was paced a LOT slower. So sometimes I was hooked and other times my A.D.D. had me like “You can skim this. JUST SKIM IT!” So I had to just put it down and walk away so that I wouldn’t skim it. LOL.
I SCREAMED WHEN CHAOL FOUND OUT ABOUT THE WITCHES COMING TO HELP DORIAN AND THEM! I MEAN SCREAMED! That’s honestly ALL I WANTED from this book. ALL. And when Nes was like no it was definitely the thirteen I was like HELL YES IT WAS!
My mind is honestly ALIVE with thoughts of any other covens that may have heard about that battle and chosen to defect and follow Manon. I feel like I would expect that from Petrah, but also Manon was ALWAYS nice to the other Blackbeak covens. She gave them chances to prove themselves and helped them to fight. So I wonder if any of them said “fuck the Matron, we fly for Manon,” and tried to escape Morath to find the Thirteen to join up?! 💀💔🗑
Pretty sure Yrene is Crochan. Pretty excited she’s mixed race too.
I’m a Hasar fan. I was a bit skeptical at first. There were some iffy/cringe worthy moments for me, but by the end I felt like Maas did a good job showing the nuance and not exploiting her.
Um. Um. Um. I think that’s it for right now. Im sure I have other thoughts on it overall. But these are the thoughts I can remember!

I had so much fun at TBF this year, if any of you live near Rochester, NY I would 100% recommend coming next year and meeting all of the fantastic authors! It’s a super fun, engaging, and easygoing experience.
****Caution: Spoilers Ahead****
The panels throughout the day were run by a moderator and no audience questions were able to be asked due to the sheer volume of people that attended the event and the length of the panels. This is what I found out through the moderator’s questions:
Sarah was an intense badminton player in college (really. really. intense.
Sarah’s had always hoped that her patronus was a velociraptor, but in realty its an Occamy
Reneé is obsessed with snake rings.
Reneé loves bingeing True Blood and eating Hot Cheetos for hours on end.
Reneé’s patronus is a Rat- something that she originally took great offense to, but has now come to terms with.
Reneé once watched a seven hour documentary on how to make a katana
Both authors spend copious amounts of time learning about random (and not so random) information about different cultures and time periods.
Both authors really really really love Tamora Pierce. At separate times, they met the author and had complete meltdowns trying to tell her how awesome and amazing she is, and how much work she did in the way of paving the road for other female fantasy writers.
Sarah even told us a story about how she read this very cool article she read explaining the history behind painted on beauty marks. She said that at their beginning, they were different shapes, like hearts, stars and circles, that were cut out of black silk. The number of shapes on a person’s face was reflective of their place in society- the more designs that a person had, the more likely it was that they were a prostitute, using the wild decorations to cover up sores from STDs and their inaccessibility to health and skin care.
Both authors also talked about their obsessions with mythology. They both really enjoy the Russian folktale of Baba Yaga, who is essentially the most evil ever, and makes the Weaver look like a fluffy baby duck.
Sarah also touched on her adoration for the Norwegian fairytale East of the Sun, West of the Moon. It tells the story of a girl who finds her true love, only to have him stolen away by an evil fairy queen. The girl then decides to go after him, having to solve riddles and best monsters in order to save him- which she eventually does. Sarah actually based the original plot of ACOTAR on East of the Sun, West of the Moon.
Rhys wasn’t actually supposed to have the role that he did, but then he presented himself at Calanmai and Sarah couldn’t deny Feyre's and Rhys’ chemistry. When she would write Tamlin and Feyre having intimate moments she would cringe so hard. Then she would write a scene between Rhys and Feyre and almost not be able to be around them because they were so intense together.
Which fictional villain would Sarah and Reneé most enjoy taking down?
Dolores Umbridge: In the end, she gets what’s coming to her, and it’s satisfying because everyone has a Dolores in their life, where most people never really encounter true, pure evil like Voldemort.
Sarah’s Fictional BFFs are:
Hermione
Sailor Moon
Katara
Buffy
Reneé’s Fictional BFFs are:
Aria
Breanne of Tarth
Crushes:
Reneé-
Jason Momoa
That Hot South Korean Body Guard
Rhys
Sarah didn’t even get to her list- she looked up the body guard and then spent like five minutes ogling the body guard and wiping her sweaty palms on her pants and being very flustered.
Favorite YA Ships:
Reneé:
Alliyah and Darkling from Leigh Bardougho’s Shadow and Bone
Feyre and Rhys from Sarah’s ACOTAR
Alanna and George from Tamora Peirce’s Song of the Lioness Series
Sarah:
Karou and Akiva from Lani Taylor’s Daughter of Smoke and Bone
Shazi and Khalid from Reneé's The Wrath and The Dawn
What kind of Instagrams would your characters have?
Shazi: Selfie Queen
Dorian: All of the books. His account would be called “Hot Boys Reading"
Aedion: Shameless Selfies
Rhys: “Candids” taken by Feyre that showcase Rhys’ endless beauty
Is there a Theme Song for series or any part of your books?:
Sarah:
Throne of Glass, Killer Queen by Queen or Back in Black by ACDC
Sarah meditated to Kanye in order to get in the headspace to write Heir of Fire
A Court of Wings and Ruin: Cosmic Love by Florence and the Machine
Sarah meditated to Kanye in order to get in the headspace to write Heir of Fire
Reneé
The Wrath and The Dawn: The civil wars
Flame in the Mist: Bangarang by Skrillex
What Reality TV Shows would your characters excel at?:
Aelin (depending on her mood): American Ninja Warrior, Say Yes to the Dress, Real House Wives
Feyre: “She’s not cheery enough” She would try to be on an art show, and then just be like, “So yeah, this is my painting"
Shazi: The Price is Right, “The Long Lost Kardashian"
Mariko: Who Wants to Be a Millionaire
Who Would be the Best Dressed at Prom?:
RHYS. He would most likely do the most dramatic entrance possible. He would enter at the top of a grand staircase, and a spotlight would focus on him and he would open his wings, and glitter would fly everywhere- making him look like pure magic.
Khalid would see Rhys enter and would just feel so upstaged, and would be looking very beautiful himself, but then theres RHYS and he just spends the rest of the night sulking in the shadows, following Rhys.
What would your characters major in in college?
Aelin: Music
Feyre: Art or Art History
Shazi: Political Science or English (something with a lot of analytical thinking)
Favorite Strong Female Characters:
Both authors understand why this question is necessary, but they wish that is wasn’t. Reneé said that to her, a ‘strong character’ is just a well rounded character, whether thats a man or a woman. Strength isn’t just physical, it’s mental, and of the soul and of the heart. Sarah said that one of her favorite female heroines that exemplified this is Buffy- Buffy is a badass, but she’s also girly. Buffy is who she wants to be, and who she needs to be. She’s brave, and intelligent, and kind and beautiful, and all of those characteristics make her into the amazing heroine that she is.
Sarah, what’s coming next?:
Tower of Dawn: Get the tissues ready. Sarah sat down to write a novella, and at the end of one day, she had 20k words- at the end of five she had 100k. Now Tower of Dawn is about the same length as Empire of Storms. She said that she can’t share anything about the cover yet, but we should be getting a cover reveal soonish, and she really loves the cover. Tower of Dawn was and is a story close to her heart, and it didn’t and still doesn’t feel like work to write it. The events of this book take place at the same time as Empire of Storms, and you absolutely have to read it in order to understand the action that takes place in the last book. She also said that the culture in the Southern Continent is loosely based on the Mongols and Genghis Kahn- she’s obsessed with the culture and the time period.
Catwoman: Sarah is working on a retelling of the origin story of Catwoman, one of her favorite anti-heroines ever.
World of Throne of Glass: Super exciting project, it’ll be almost like an encyclopedia of names and places and facts about the series and the world it’s set in.
The Final Throne of Glass book. Sarah said that this summer will be the summer of many tears as she sits down to end the series. She’s both excited and terrified, because this story has been part of her for so long
Reneé’s new series, Flame in the Mist, features Mariko, a super badass girl who is almost assassinated, but then disguises herself as a man and infiltrates the organization of assassins that tried to kill her. Reneé said that the story pulls elements from 47 Ronin and Mulan, and features all of the gender bending- something that she is very excited about.
Sarah told us that she’s a cinematic writer, meaning that as she writes, she sees the events playing out like a movie in her head, and really gets to experience everything with her characters. This is part of the reason she loves bingeing TV so much- she likes learning about new and different ways of storytelling. The storytelling in TV is a lot like the storytelling in books- each episode is a chapter and each season is a book. Sarah and Reneé agree that watching TV is great research because it allows your mind to put away little tidbits for later, but also be sort of mindless.
Towards the end of the day, I asked Sarah my burning question for her: How did Aelin get the name Celaena? Did she choose it herself? Did Arobynn pick it? Will we ever find out?
Sarah responded that she couldn’t actually tell me because it was going to be a /thing/ in either the last Throne of Glass book, or in a “novella” but we all know how things went when she wrote Chaol’s novella, so you never know.
If anyone has any questions feel free to message me! I would love to hear from you!
