Christmas ficlets ask game!!

When one ended up 60 odd years in the future, there was a lot of unfamiliarity, to say the least. Over the past year or two, Daniel had seen stranger things than he’d ever expected to— and he’d seen some bizarre stuff working with the SSR.

But there were certain things that retained a sense of familiarity, that hadn’t changed too much since his time. And Christmas was one of those things. Mostly.

“Why do people use these again?” he asked, eyeing the projector dubiously.

“Makes decorating easier,” Daisy explained, sorting through the box of Christmas decorations that Jemma had put them in charge of. Nearby, a radio let out the sounds of a Christmas song Daniel didn’t recognize— though at this point even he recognized Michael Buble’s voice. “Quicker and easier than putting up strings of lights. Mack hates them, though— he says they’re a betrayal of the spirit of Christmas and a sign of how this generation prizes quick and easy over harder but ultimately better stuff.”

“So, don’t put it out?” Daniel guessed as the song on the radio ended.

Grinning, Daisy said, “Nah, we’ll keep it in reserve.”

“Got it.” Daniel put it to the side just as a new song started. And this one, he recognized. ‘White Christmas’ had been around since he was a kid, and it always brought to mind snowy streets and Christmas trees.

Daisy clearly recognized it too— as she dug through the book, Daniel heard her humming along, swaying a little in time to the music.

I’m dreaming of a White Christmas,

Just like the ones I used to know….

Setting aside the box he’d been looking through, Daniel quietly stepped forward to stand next to her. Catching her gaze, he offered her a hand and a smile as he said, “May I have this dance?”

A grin rose like the sun across her face, and she took his hand.

An observation: This is probably going to look like gibberish to anyone who doesn’t use hanyu pinyin…

Level (-): The first and second hanyu pinyin tones Oblique (\): The third and fourth hanyu pinyin tones

An interesting pattern is that the first lines often close with words of oblique tones and ending lines have level ones. Corresponding to that is a slightly more active movement in the description and flow of the first line while the ending lines have a more sedate pace.

So the first thing to grab me by the shoulders to shake was how lively and ALIVE this whole poem feels! And I was like... but WHY? It wasn't until copying this poem out for the first time that I realized...

天将 heaven (Does Thing)

一遍洗 it also Washes

星辰让 the stars Let

能变 the mortal world Can Change

They've all been anthropomorphized in my brain because they are Doing things. Heaven, Summer, the stars and the world are actively engaged in activity! It’s not just these actions - but also things like Summer yielding to Autumn, crisp and fresh Autumn who brings its characteristics into this world. And because of nature's cycles, the world suddenly feels like it's brimming with life.

How do you explain the brightness a moon? Liu Yuxi tells us that the stars have seen its brilliance and stepped aside to let moonlight take the center. Stars in poetry have a tendency to get described as brilliant and shining, see: 星汉灿烂, and the word 让 is of 谦让 (modestly decline), to let, to yield. With the way that it is used here, I have a mental image of someone delighted at another’s brilliance, bowing, and stepping aside. It's such a playful turn of phrasing.

And yet how bright is the moon? So bright that it generously lends some to the wind, the dew, so that they too sparkle with light - even seeming like the light comes from within themselves. After holding their breath whilst Autumn glides in in all its refreshing tranquility, everyone is partying hard under the Mid-Autumn moonlight - what fun!

Which then makes me think of 玩月, and the word frolic came so naturally I just had to use it. Baidu tells me that 玩月, which parses as Playing with the Moon (uncapitalized words are silent) is the same as 赏月 which is Admiring/Appreciation of the Moon. So, why use 玩 instead of 赏? Maybe because it lends the ambience a lively, natural and merry vibe. 赏月 activities as reported by a song dynasty writer are thus: 中秋节前，诸店皆卖新酒，贵家结饰台榭，民家争占酒楼玩月，笙歌远闻千里，嬉戏连坐至晓 (DeepL comes to the lazy translator’s rescue: Before the Mid-Autumn Festival, all the shops sell new wine, the noble families decorate their stalls and pavilions, and the people's families compete to occupy the restaurants to play with the moon; the music and songs are heard for thousands of miles, and the games are played until dawn.) so, frolic fits quite well.

Can I also just say how the whole opening of 天将今夜月一遍洗寰瀛 is so so so epic but at the same time, is indescribably homely and filled with so much warmth that it drives me INSANE. Like you're cleaning house, EXCEPT this house is the entire world. Everything is awash with gentle light, a tender cleansing. IM AAAAAAAAAA T___T what I would give to be able to write like that. (What I would give to shake the writer and tell him this to his face.)

But, by the way, why are we dousing the world in moonlight-water and scrubbing it? HOW are we doing that? Is light and water the same thing???? How’s your physics grade, huh classmate @Liu Yuxi… does your mother know? Well our dude may not have passed physics - he never went for a single class - but he sure aced literature! 月光如水, he knows that the moonlight is smooth, bright and pure like slow running water.

What else stands out?

The last line! 

Oh, how it also drives me insane but in another direction...

So OK, the mutable mortal world versus the celestial capital - the world of the celestials (i.e. the moon) which is without inhibitions. So... where's the link???? Until i realised, my dear, you have just been SHOWN the beauty of this changing world. The seasons change, the weather does as well and the people play their games. Everything in this world CAN CHANGE. But up above the moon like a celestial palace of jade exists beyond. Transcendent. There are no rules that bind it. It exists beyond change.

So basically very awe-inspiring vibes. Though, doesn’t it also make you feel safe? In the midst of the chaos in this world, be it good or bad, look up at the moon and let its light-hearted serenity calm you. Always watch for and wonder at the beauty of this world, and remember to have fun in it!

(2) Descendants. I'm a pretty big Disney movie fan, so being the kid of Disney character seems cool, though I have no idea who's kid I'd be. (3) Pokemon. I've grown up playing the Pokemon games, and I used to watch the anime when I was younger, and I want to be a Pokemon trainer so bad.

Well hey you, thanks for this!! I never like self-promoting anything of mine, but I do carry a certain sense of accomplishment and love for my fics, and I just want people to read and enjoy them :)

So here we go!

1. Until the Night is Over

(Fandom: Agents of SHIELD)

This one is so near and dear to my heart. It was inspired by the song When the Night is Over by Lord Huron, and it’s the first and only multi-chapter fic I’ve ever completed (I’ve always been more of a one-shot gal myself). I call it a “modern day Dousy AU,” with a healthy amount of espionage, angst, mystery, and fluff. Written at the height of the Dousy craze around here, and I was so honored by all the loyal readers and even some late night idea sessions with the mutuals.

Anyway, it’s a classic and has held the number one favorite spot for a long time :)

2. the medic

(Fandom: Star Wars: The Clone Wars)

I feel like this was my first real foray off my beaten path of linear, conversational fic, if you will. It’s more poetry than anything else and it focuses on Kix, a character we don’t see much of but has a huge and very unique role in TCW. I wanted to explore the ins and outs of being a medic in the GAR, and the parallels that led to his ultimate fate. I’ve even gotten some amazing feedback from relatives of real life army medics, who say it rings true and reminds them of their veteran relatives stories, which is just a huge honor and makes me tear up a little :’)

3. but you dream of some epiphany

(Fandom: Star Wars: The Clone Wars)

Again, this one is less “traditional” and more poetic. It’s just a short take on the couple of weeks immediately following Order 66, and how Ahsoka and Rex try to find their way in this new, very hostile galaxy. Lots of emotions, PTSD, and callbacks and parallels. It’s also partly me rejecting the canon that says the two of them split up almost immediately after escaping the purge, and deciding that it’s much more likely they would stick together, at least for a little while.

4. And I Dealt My Heart

(Fandom: Agents of SHIELD)

For someone who’s never been a fan of AUs, I sure do write a lot of them for Dousy :)

This one was my knee jerk reaction to some overwhelming emotions I was feeling following a dance I went to with my family. Funny what a whirlwind of a night can make you feel in the span of 2-3 hours. I love love love country music and the culture surrounding it, and I thought what better way to put a new spin on the Blue Shirt™️ than a good old fashioned square dance? Plus, it’s such a natural foil for Daisy that it really worked, at least in my opinion. And who doesn’t love a little extra sprinkle of Philinda being pseudo parents? :)

5. can’t tell me there’s no point in trying

(Fandom: Star Wars)

This one is still in progress, so we’ll see where I land on it, but so far I have SO enjoyed the process. It was originally just a one-shot, aka me scratching the itch I have to see Ahsoka Tano and Cal Kestis interact on screen, and touching on the emotions surrounding Order 66 and the clones’ betrayal and how Cal would react to a de-chipped Rex. Now it’s gone much further to my own delight, and I get to explore things like Cody and the Bad Batch and even Cal’s biological family. I really love it so far and I’m excited about where it’s headed :)

This Family Of Ours. by momentofchaos. Soft, cozy, rainy Sunday morning fic. Fluff. Emotions. You know that feeling when you're feeling...melancholic and wistful but also happy for a character? Yes this.

Uh Oh by manoutoftimeandquake. Borrowing author's summary: "Alternate universe where people can hear the song their soulmate is singing. However, Daniel's soulmate seems to be singing one song all the time."

Uh Oh by samanthaswishes. Daisy has a past. A past that is accessible on YouTube.

coitus interruptus by lazyfish. 5+1. Five time they got interrupted during [banned word] and one time they didn't. Honestly the unresolved tension makes some of the scenarios feel even more...sinful than if they had just gone on.

So, after thinking about it for less than a minute, I settled on Dousy. Specifically that episode where Malick basically dissects Daisy. He took what he wanted and just threw her back to Daniel so she could rest before he finished his dissection. "And when I felt like I was an old cardigan under someone's bed..."

And Daniel supported her. He saved her. He told her his story and he carried her out of there and he sat by her bedside until she woke up every time and he was there for her. "You put me on and said I was your favorite"

Also, that line "A friend to all is a friend to none." That kind of reminds me of when in the loop she said, "And you'd like to be that person [who picks people like me up after we run into walls]?" And he said, "Not for everyone," and began to describe Daisy. "And I knew you, stepping on the last train, marked me like a bloodstain..."
