Because IG won’t allow mixed format photos, and I constantly change orientation when I’m taking photos, here’s a few more from A night at Tin Pan Alley in P-Town with Eleanor & Dario!!! Becky and I are quite fond of Tin Pan Alley and had been trying to grab a drink there the entire time we were in P-Town, but New Year’s Day was the first time we managed to get in and grab a table. We had just planned on drinks, which became dinner, and then just after we were finishing our food these musicians started setting up. And they were really good!!!!! So I’m the end, we ordered more drinks (Which I only slightly regretted) and made a night of it, eventually starting for the whole show!! It was a lovely night! SATURDAY MATINEE MUSIC VIDEO: “Nobody Cares About the Railroads Anymore” The more one studies the career of Harry Nilsson, the more his talents shine. On this video I perform “Nobody Cares About the Railroads Anymore,” a lesser-known Nilsson tune I’m familiar with after performing it many times in assisted living homes and with Davy Jones (Monkees). The Tin Pan Alley-style song indicates Davy’s admiration of Nilsson, the award-winning singer-songwriter whose music has been used in many films and covered by The Monkees, Fred Astaire, Glen Campbell, Mary Hopkin, 3 Dog Night, The Yardbirds, and others. Pivoting from this song I talk about Nilsson’s successes and connections with The Beatles, Micky Dolenz, and Davy Jones. One time in Los Angeles (there for a gig), Davy took us band members on a ride around West Hollywood, pointing out places where Harry hung out. Other times I sat in Davy’s den (at Spruce Lawn), spinning records and listening to Davy’s wistful memories of Harry.

How many of you knew this song was about a female baseball fan? SATURDAY MATINEE MUSIC VIDEO “Take Me Out to The Ballgame” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QRq8AWn3oGE …Most everyone knows the chorus to this song, usually led by a loud organ after the 7th inning at baseball games everywhere. However, many people don’t know the verses, which are about an obssessive female baseball fan named Katie Casey. She’d rather go to ballgames than go out on dates with her boyfriend. When I play this song in assisted living homes it never fails to get folks roused up! 

More Fun Facts:

1. The song was copyrighted in 1908 and first recorded on cylinder, making it an early example of a (pre-shellac/vinyl) “hit record.” It was also the era when sheet music was the dominant way people played music at home, and sales skyrocketed.

2. It was composed by Tin Pan Alley songwriters Jack Norworth and Albert von Tilzer (later known for “Shine on Harvest Moon”)—both of whom had never been to a baseball game up to that point. 

3. My favorite sample is The Marx Brothers 1935 film, A NIGHT AT THE OPERA, when the orchestra is tricked into playing it in the middle of Verdi’s Il Trovatore Overture.
