Sea Mouse (Aphrodita aculeata)
Distribution: Found in marine habitats of the northern hemisphere; the North Atlantic, North Sea, Baltic Sea and the Mediterranean Sea.
Habitat: Benthic; lives from the sublittoral zone down to a maximum of 1000 metres.
Diet: Carnivorous; feeds mainly on other invertebrates such as small crabs, hermit crabs, mollusks, nemerteans and other polychaete worms.
Description: Despite its caterpillar-like appearance, the sea mouse is actually a polychaete worm! Its most obvious feature is the dense mat of hairs, or setae, that cover its body. While most are a brownish-red colour, these are intermingled with glassy hairs (especially on either side of its body), which have an iridescent quality. These hairs are usually reddish in colour, but become a bright bluish-green when the light hits them a certain way. This acts as a defence mechanism to ward off predators, acting as a form of aposematism, but also acts as camouflage, with the worms appearing brown from above (blending in with the substrate) and blue from the sides (blending in with the water).

These little fuckers are round gobies. They are a freshwater goby that's invasive in Michigan, and they're in the nearby lake. They're distinct from the four native species due to their fused pelvic fins (middle pic) and a big black dot at the rear of their front dorsal fin. Though some other gobies have spots on their fins, NO Michigan-native species has a fused pelvic fin. These guys are very aggressive feeders and are very good at outcompeting native gobies.
They're also extremely good at stealing bait off big hooks as people on the docks reel in their lines. In particular, the bastard in the bottom photo stole my bait two days ago, so I caught him and filleted him for Bug.
Today, after acquiring smaller hooks, I went back and got 16 more, and educated several other fishers about their invasive nature. I got two turned over to me by others, and caught 14 more myself.
One man wandered over and asked why I was catching them on purpose. It was too much trouble to explain my feelings about invasive species, so I just told him, one of them stole my bait two days ago. He stopped watching my bobber and boggled at me and goes:
"You're doing this for revenge?"
So now there's some guy in town that thinks I am exacting revenge upon fish kind for a single stolen worm.

ended up with this little . presentation. guide. thing. there are probably many, many more, but this is what we came up with on the Spot

good omens the book, 1990: see, queen is so ubiquitous in london these days that if you leave a tape in a car for too long, it'll inevitably morph into a best of queen tape. which is why their megahits are playing in crowley's bentley all the time! isn't that a funny and topical joke?
good omens the show, 2019-2023: yeah crowley's car has a hands-free call system and also only plays cassette tapes. yeah it's whatever don't think about it. what's an incredibly earnest and passionate queen love song we can play during this scene where crowley tries urgently to reach aziraphale

Green Lynx Spider (Peucetia viridans)
Distribution: Mainly found in the southern USA, Mexico, Central America, the West Indies and Venezuela.
Habitat: Most common on low shrubs and herbaceous plants; prefer open areas like fields, prairies, xeric scrub, yards and gardens.
Diet: Carnivorous generalists; feed on many crop pests, such as moths of the Noctuidae, Geometridae and Pyralidae families, but also on beneficial insects such as honeybees, wasps, syrphid flies and tachnid flies.
Description: The green lynx spider earned its common name due to the cat-like way it pounces on its prey. Unlike many other spider species, lynx spiders are active predators who hunt during the day. They usually sit on plants in order to blend in while hunting; in fact, females have been known to change colors to better match their background, a process that lasts around 16 days. Color changes also happen late in the season, where individuals will shift from a bright green to a pale yellow, likely due to the degradation of tetrapyrrole pigments in their blood.
After constructing her egg sac, the female guards it actively until her spiderlings are ready to emerge. She hangs from the sac and fiercely attacks anything that comes near, spitting venom at potential threats to distances of up to a foot. Despite being fairly common, lynx spiders rarely bite humans—their bite is however very painful (though not fatal), causing swelling that may last a few days.

Friday, November 24.
A snug bug in a rug.
As Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from uneasy dreams he found himself transformed in his bed into a gigantic insect. This, Gregor thought, simply could not be better.
