The problem with the John Mulaney situation (aside from the incredibly obvious) isn’t that people formed parasocial relationships with him. Parasocial relationships are entirely neutral in themselves. They’re simply the non-reciprocal relationship between a public figure and their audience. My previous stance that John was alright but not that interesting? That’s a parasocial relationship. Parasocial relationships are inevitable.
What isn’t inevitable is hero worship. What isn’t inevitable is making an idol of a comedian. What isn’t inevitable is seeing a comedian who didn’t seem hopelessly bigoted and deciding that they’re (nearly) perfect.
That’s not to say that anybody was necessarily wrong to fall for John’s good-guy persona. Contrary to what some people might tell you, being constantly vigilant that your fave could turn out to be a monster is not healthy. You are allowed to believe, based on the evidence available to you, that someone’s of good character.
(I’d like to draw attention back to what I said earlier: I was never invested in John. I have no idea if there were red flags in his standup. I’m speaking generally.)
What’s important is not to put people up on a pedestal. Do be critical of the performers you enjoy. Don’t worship your heroes.
Feel the pain that comes with parasocial disappointment, especially when that disappointment involves harming marginalized communities. (Those feelings are normal.)
Just… don’t pin everything you’re feeling on a neutral phenomenon. Pin it where it actually belongs, wherever that might be.
If you're a trans self shipper, your f/o will always be there beside you (they may even be trans themselves!). If you live in a country or state that is growing/has been increasingly unsafe for trans people, they're here to hold you close, listen to you rage, cry, or vent.
I still see people upset that MatPat made a joke about a joke (people responded to a form with the helicopter joke and he commented on it sarcastically) even though that was years ago. To those people: Bijuu Mike said something similar without any prompt in a Yandere Simulator video 5 years ago. Where are the pointlessly outraged posts about that?
Edit: I also don't see many people still upset about Sssniperwolf's blatantly misgendering a trans woman, and it was obvious if you saw that part of the video that she fucking meant it.
Something very interesting to me how so many antis will call themselves "Izzy Hands critical" and how Izzy is the character most headcanoned as a trans man.
*gripping the edge of the sink* If I spend all my time thinking about the cut Yosuke lines and reliving my teenaged years, I can avoid spiraling about the genocidal governor.
i have rarely been this out of my mind seething angry at something i’ve seen online before but FORTY EIGHT THOUSAND LIKES on a video saying that older feminists need to shut up about the culture of young women making jokes about how women are just toooooo silly and not serious with their own money and eat less food than men do and just that’s a girly thing to do. and if you have any problem with this especially during a time when the Republican party is actively trying to make women into perpetual childbearers dependent on the men in their lives forever through economic coercion you actually hate women because you won’t let the girls have fun. GOD we’re never making it out of here.
saw your most recent post about really good fics that contain uncomfortable kinks and i immediately thought "ah, biscia must be reading the mpreg soriel fic" and almost left a reply talking about it but i stopped myself because i realized that would be an insane assumption to make. needless to say i felt so vindicated when i saw you link it in an earlier post.

Transphobia is meaningless promote lgbt into the mainstream.
jsyk user genderyomi reblogs from ppl identyfing as baeddel/“transman-hater” (w their words). safe to assume she is one.
i do appreciate well meaning calling me out on shit i've reposted and whatnot but that does not to my mind warrant any kind of unfollow/deleting posts what have you
i have been seeing traces of this new wave is 'transmisandry a real thing/is baeddelism real and if it is is it actually a bad thing or kinda based' flooding my dash lately and have very deliberately stayed away from engaging in any of it/weighing up on one side or another.
thankyou for engaging here though in a more polite way!
playing dressup in the garbage !! unfortunately Splinter found out and, after laughing at him, sat Leo down to explain that he shouldn't wear that kind of thing :')
The way certain male characters in fandom are talked about as having traditionally afab sex characteristics/anatomy, not in a "trans headcanon" way but in a "meant to imply you think this character is weak/delicate/submissive" way... It bugs me.
my coworkers are being turbo transphobic and literally refuse to listen to answers to questions they fucking ask argh!!! I can just tell you!!! I can just answer you!!!!! I have answers!!! to the ridiculous questions you ask in a mocking way!!!! if you listen for one second I can just fucking explain!!!! 😡😭😡😭
