Delicious In Dungeon Episode 3: Living Armor
For the keen eyed, that image in the bottom right might be familiar, as it made an appearance in the original trailers/key visuals for this series. And it perfectly exemplifies this episode.
Where I've been a little critical of Trigger's work being aimed towards faithfulness and almost a rigidity in regards to how they approach Delicious In Dungeon, this episode takes things to the extreme in the opposite direction.
Overflowing with Trigger's style and appeal, the episode lovingly accepts Ryoko Kui's original work, and transforms it into Trigger's own. Rather than floundering as to how to ensure that the original manga remains felt in every frame, Trigger went out there and did what they do best: their own work.
As plenty of others, like kViN on Twitter, have pointed out, the animation directors behind the episode provided incredible work in approaching the character designs, and with Ichigo Kanno doing overtime between AD and boarding the episode, you obviously have something that is going to maximize the use of the medium to the extremes.
Every frame feels tailored to expose the greatest amount of personality and energy as possible. The living armor is imposing and powerful, shaded deeply and being cast in shadows constantly. The lead characters being incredibly fluid, changing almost entirely from frame to frame. The Trigger animation style appearing from every nook and cranny, winding up each movement and bringing an incredible amount of weight and heft.
It's all just so incredible. This is what I hoped for when I heard they were doing this series, and this is what I'm desperate to see as we move forward.
Simply put, it is the pinnacle of quality that this adaptation could reach. You don't go to Trigger for a regular adaptation, you go to Trigger for a Trigger adaptation. Removing their soul from the anime is like removing the heart of Kui's manga. This is a marriage of styles, and that is the point. The feel of the original manga combines effortlessly with Trigger's excessive approach, and I really would never want to see Delicious In Dungeon adapted in any other way.
This is an episode that's left me stumped. It had me wondering if I should even talk about it because my praise would come off so incoherent because of the outstanding work. But I just had to share my thoughts. It's so good, almost too good to be a weekly episode. Trigger has my heart for this episode alone.

So, as I was watching BNA (it's a nice watch, but has a few problems) and I noticed something...
LITTLE WITCH ACADEMIA EASTEREGG!
Little fun fact: The creator for Lwa, Yoh Yoshinari, also created BNA! (It's probably already known that he created BNA but who cares right?)
