since its valentines, i thought it was only fitting to post the Trivittata's legend as well. I like to think that the idea of giving flowers to loved ones in the world of Animalia originated with this legend.

Boxelder Bug
(Boisea trivittata)
If in North America, expect to see lots of these bugs outside in the summertime, and potentially in the warm cracks in your house in the winter. Not unlike stink bugs, they will release a strong odour when threatened or crushed.

Note
I know the creature is small so no problem i you cannot identify it that’s okay but I live in Oregon and am curious about this good sir or madam
Tumblr media
looks like a juvenile Boisea, a boxelder bug.
you’ve got an additional species, B. rubrolineata out there that I don’t have in the East! I’m not sure how best to tell the two apart, especially since the juveniles look similar.

Vito Russo (he/him) is a 68 year old Beastkin who works as a Specialty Officer in the Collective Starfleet and looks a lot like Aldis Hodge. His beast form is Ameerega trivittata, the three-striped poison tree frog.
Biography
There are three sides to every story: his, the marks, and the truth.
Asking him about his past would yield a myriad of tales; all of them cursory, reluctantly given, and a lie from start to finish. Women he pursued were entranced by his reluctance, drunk on the victory of his confession and his kisses until they woke sober and alone. Business owners were lulled by his poise, trusting his expensive suits and his confidence with money they’d never see again. Every situation required a mask and the one he wore was always perfect. It wasn’t flawless in the way others lied, it was built with cracks. The fissures of a broken past, a lost love, a failed business; a falsehood that ached of personhood so vehemently he could never be anything other than what he claimed.
But he was.
Once the job was done he never returned, so he never heard his marks’ tales. Some would covet his loss, sure that he’d died in a horrific accident. He’d never have left, he wasn’t that kind of man. Others, usually those who had lost their fortunes, cursed his name and his lineage into the ether. Of course they’d seen it coming, they’d only given him a chance. How could they not have seen it coming? Those too-wide pupils and irises soaked in pitch could only be a snake’s eyes. They’d simply been too trusting, he’d been too persuasive. A weak moment in time, that’s when he’d ensnared them.
Then, there was truth.
None of it mattered to him at all. He’d bed them because it’d been a challenge. Stolen their money because it’d been something to do. He’d wanted to, so he had. None had ever successfully pursued him into a new name so none had ever noticed, but his disappearances were always accompanied by a death. An elder poisoned, a father who’d commit suicide, an aunt who’d drowned, a cousin brutally murdered. Those deaths were the truth — the reason he’d shown up in their lives like a whirlwind and then disappeared as a mist of memories. He was a killer, and that’s all he was.
The personality and black eyes of a snake, his true nature is Ameerega trivittata, the three-striped poison dart frog. While his poison is rarely lethal to those without heart conditions, it has proven useful more than once in his line of work. The Collective ambassador who’d recruited him had known he was poisonous and taken it to full advantage. Fast forward through the trainings, the missions, and the reprimands and end up at the last mission. It’d gone well. The human Collective councilmember was dead just as been asked for, but the manhunt that followed had been hotter than his Venpalen handlers had accounted for.
Paranoid and feeling the pressure, they’d sent him on ‘vacation’ to a newly integrated planet at the edges of the galaxy with the name Vito Russo.
Personality
Vito Russo hasn’t been around long enough, nor had enough direction, to fully form his mask yet. “Do whatever you want so long as you don’t draw too much attention to yourself” is a remarkably unhelpful statement when you have no idea who you are nor what you’re supposed to do with yourself while on ‘vacation’. Relaxing contradicts with everything he’s ever known and the peaceful state of Leora makes his skin itch. How long can he really last here? His life may be in danger in every other system known to the Collective, but he might honestly prefer it to this idyllic nothingness.
Welcome home @russovito! We're happy to have you in Sotiris.

Asian Ladybug and Eastern Boxelder Bug swarm - Harmonia axyridis & Boisea trivittata
Normally the insect posts on this blog highlight one specie in particular, perhaps with guest appearances from other insects that share the same environment. Today, two different insects share the spotlight from a warm and sunny weekend day on what has otherwise been a brisk start to autumn. To get up close to these Bugs meant going into the swarm! With so many individuals in the dirt and on the pillars, you can only imagine how many were airborne. In reality, there were so many individuals you could actually hear the Boxelder Bugs buzzing around. Normally the sound is very slight, but many individuals bring out a low drone, that while unnerving at first, settles down when you remember that all the insects here are harmless to humans. If a few land on you, there’s no reason to panic, but not everyone likes aggregates of insects. I’m very happy to see them once more. When sunny weather comes along during the more chillier months, not a single minute can be wasted! Soak up all the sun possible, metabolize and get moving before snow and cold necessitates overwintering. With warm soil and stone to take advantage of, these insects could warm up quickly and enjoy an active day.
It’s not likely that these insects target each other for food. At the very least, they would be tolerant of each other. Ladybugs are the predators here, so those Boxelder Bugs better watch out (hahaha). The latter meanwhile should take the last few days of warmth to finish its seed feeding before the cold returns. It’s very important to stay fed during the cold as energy reserves are needed when the Bugs have little to eat (for those that will overwinter). It’s especially important for the females as they’ll be responsible for laying eggs for the spring surge of Boxelder Bugs! Both of these autumn-themed insects will hide away in the soil or in the urban environment when winter arrives, all the way until spring returns. Ladybugs inside houses are common around that time; I usually see a dozen or so. Just when it seems that all is quiet around the house, there’s the sound of small collisions between a flying Beetle and a ceiling lamp! It may be confusing indoors, but anything is better than the harsh cold and long winter. On the plus side, Ladybugs in the house can be of benefit as they can help keep your indoor plants pest free (if they actually find your plants and stay hydrated). Our rubber plants could certainly use the protection after the Scale Insect incidents we had earlier this year. Boxelder Bugs on the other hand aren’t as welcome indoors, but are not dangerous to humans, even in large numbers.
Pictures were taken on October 22, 2022 with a Google Pixel 4. Have a Happy Halloween! Like the insects before you, it’s the perfect time for red, black and orange.

A few weeks ago i thought it would be fun to design a Valentine's themed subspecies. At first, I was going to do something classic like a dove, but then with help from my Animalia server, we found something a bit more fun. It was a lot of fun trying to figure out what the lore for these guys would be.
Every monday I am going to try to post some thing related to my Animalia project if I can. This can be lore, subspecies sheets, items whatever I have on hand that I think would be fun to share. I prob will reblog old things as well from time to time when I get to busy to put something together. But I should have a lot of stuff to queue up for you guys!
Please let me know if there is anything you are particularly interested to see as well.

Eastern Boxelder Bug | Nymph #shorts #cute #boxelderbug #cutecritters #bytesizeambs
Another critter I found. This one is an Eastern Boxelder Bug. However this is a nymph, not fully grown.
I do not know why I am so fascinated by insects and arachnids and such. Lol.

How to Effectively Control Cockroaches
Cockroaches are a common household pest that cause many health issues. They spread disease, contaminate food and water, and cause allergic reactions in some people. There are hundreds of species worldwide, and cockroaches can infest homes of any size. They feed on nearly anything, and can transmit diseases to humans and animals through their feces. Several treatment options are available to help control cockroaches.
The most important step in controlling cockroaches is sanitation and exclusion. Remove any sources of food or water, including garbage, pet feces and discarded paper products. Keep kitchens and food areas clean, and seal any open cracks or crevices that cockroaches may use to enter the home. Regular roach inspection and monitoring is also critical for preventing a cockroach infestation from becoming out of hand.
Cockroach baits are a popular method of cockroach pest control. These baits are usually made from a food-based substance that is laced with an insecticide, and when cockroaches consume the bait, they become poisoned and die. Various types of baits are available, and they work best when used in conjunction with other pest control methods. Liquid sprays and aerosol insecticides can be effective at killing cockroaches on contact, but these treatments do not offer long-term control. In addition, cockroaches have developed resistance to the many of the insecticides in commercial sprays and aerosols, so they often do not provide satisfactory results.
Other pest control cockroach products include glue traps and gel baits, which can be placed in any area where cockroaches have been seen. These traps and baits are particularly useful in reducing cockroach populations in kitchens, cabinets, closets, bathrooms, and other areas where they commonly occur. It is important to read and follow product instructions when using these products.
In general, roach baits and traps are more effective than other insecticides at controlling cockroaches in residential properties, and they are generally safer than conventional sprays and aerosols. They are also less prone to developing resistance as other insecticides have, making them a good choice for organic pest control.
Identifying the type of cockroach is key to determining the appropriate treatment plan. While all cockroaches are insects, the most common indoor species in California is the German cockroach (Blattella germanica). This cockroach is small in length and dark brown-black in color, and it prefers warm, humid areas that are close to food, water, and harborage. It is most commonly found in multi-unit residential buildings and apartments.
Another common indoor cockroach is the brown-banded cockroach (Blattella trivittata). This species is a little larger than German cockroaches, and it is light brown in color with light yellow bands on its wings and abdomen. Like the German cockroach, it prefers moist areas and is most active at night. It is most commonly found in kitchens and food preparation areas, but it can be found throughout the house.
Outdoors, this cockroach lives in shady, moist areas, such as under stones and clumps of dirt. It can also be found in rotting vegetation and decaying organic waste. It is known to migrate inside homes during dry seasons.

Fungi, insects, and flora from my walk yesterday.
Top left: Boxelder Bug (Boisea trivittata), top right: Common vetch (Vicia sativa)
Next is a curious fungi that my app suggested may be a Vinegar Cup (Helvella acetabulum)
Next, some kind of lichen? And a mushroom I didn't photograph in enough detail because my knees were giving out 🙃
Also a cute little lady bringing home the bacon in the last photo
