Just seen a post like "y r reylos upset? they kissed. I have a ship where they don't even meet" and I was ready to go "I Don't Know How To Explain To You That knowingly shipping a crackship and seeing a ship that's been set up since the beginning get turned into some emotionally manipulative little trick by hacks who dgaf abt the characters and only want to cash in on every single part of the fandom are very different things." But I gave up. Not worth the effort.
it’s not, but... honestly?
this thing is... like... I don’t want to say mildly worrying me, but... it is. (beware the next post won’t probably make much sense but bear with me this thing isn’t sitting well with me lmao)
I mean, like, let’s get it out of the way that I didn’t care for reylo either way until tlj and post-tlj I was like ‘oh okay they’re definitely the romance of the trilogy fine sounds nice I’ll be here being happy for them when they inevitably kiss’, because it’s like.. star... wars. I mean. sw is like the one franchise that until five days ago I’d have cashed in on being the ONE thing that would always end up cheesy/hopeful/not disappointing you know, so... I didn’t even consider that there was another way it could end. because it’s goddamn sw, redemption stories with happy endings are the damned brand.
so like... the fact that the thing was obviously set up and they tore it to shreds along with everything else in the movie is bad. like, bad. but people who didn’t realize how fucking insulting it was just... don’t seem to get that the moment you go watch movies whose brand is making you feel better about things and they turn into calvinism central NO HAPPINESS ALLOWED and they don’t even do it with sense - bc rots made no fucking sense at any point ever and that’s outside reylo - it just... makes you feel betrayed? like, again: in 2015 when I came out of the cinema the only thing I banked on was poe dameron not dying and I couldn’t care either way about kylo ren, but like - tlj made me care. as it was supposed to be. I was supposed to care about kylo ren’s pull to the light and guess what I did because that movie wanted me to, and it wanted me to do 2+2 and realize that he and rey were soulmates and fine I was down with that because I like myself a nice love story.
and then like... you give it to me, like that, and the moment you have the character who has had a shitty life, has been groomed since he was born if not before by Worst Person In The Galaxy if the new canon wants me to buy that - or by snoke but it’s the same -, is an abuse victim and is 100% sure that everyone hates him and no one understands him or wants to understand him, you make that character related to one of the most iconic ones in the franchise to the point that you tried to make han every other member of the trio tbh, you actually have that character taking his life in his hands after talking to han and like embrace what he always wanted to be and show that he’s actually happy with it (like ffs guys it’s also probs because adam driver is an excellent actor but you can see the ben solo vs kylo ren difference in the span of five seconds, and you’re supposed to root for ben solo to win ffs), have him actually win, have him being happy for the first time in the entire canon and then you kill him a second later with rey in tears over it except that then we forget to give him a funeral........... like.......... sorry but I feel robbed because as lowkey as my effort on banking on ben solo’s redemption was because I was sure it was coming and I took it for granted it still felt like they were being unnecessarily cruel. like, they could have killed him in ten other ways that wouldn’t make you feel like someone stabbed you in the kidney as another anon put it. but no, let’s give people the prospect of HEY THEY’LL BE HAPPY just to tear it away from them ten seconds later. like, what the fuck? that’s not what anyone signed up for.
especially when the entire thing was obviously set up for the happy ending. like, if you actually misread the audience so much that you think star wars audience wants grimdark when it’s a movie marketed at children then you don’t deserve the money you’re most likely getting paid.
like, again: as someone who wasn’t even diehard reylo or whatever even if I absolutely shipped it, I felt like these assholes took my money and punched me in the kidney since rey palpatine was a thing and the moment he died I about screamed fuck you out loud... along with most of the entire room which was screaming fuck you, because guess what, not a single person in that room actually was banking on the ben solo redemption to fail and each single person in the room was clapping when they kissed because we were fucking waiting for it already, and like......... obviously ppl shipping it are upset. they were given an unsatisfactory movie up until then that didn’t give the characters justice but which could have still been more or less decent if it saved the spirit of the entire thing... which it didn’t because sw is not fucking calvinist central and hasn’t ever been until now. and then they were given canon after being the target of the vilest shit (guys seriously I unfollowed antireylo people way before shipping reylo myself bc that crap was out of line for shipping fictional stuff)... just to have them take it away by killing the one character that was there to show you that there’s always hope for you to do the right thing?
like, let’s be fucking real: the message is that if you fucked up and want to be better it won’t ever be enough because sorry but you’ll never get another good start and if you care about someone who fucked up and want to help them be better it’s wasted time because people who want to do better can’t actually live and have a chance to keep on doing it.
and sorry but fuck that message with a chainsaw. the beautiful thing about this ship imvho was that in tlj it made it overtly clear how rey helped him out of being a genuinely nice person who listened to someone who thought no one ever would and at the same time kylo/ben couldn’t believe that someone actually said that he wouldn’t be alone either bc the two of them are extremely lonely people and feel that acutely....... and they even threw in the soul bond to make it extra obvious. it was a hopeful story because you had girl who never had anyone who was also innately good who could put her prejudices aside to see that someone who also went dark side because he thought no one loved him and then kept on being abused his entire life actually had good inside them and wanted to help him see that instead of writing him off as a lost cause. like. that was a good romance. nothing exceedingly new under the sun, but in sw it was pretty fresh and a good spin compared to the two other main love stories of the trilogy. also, anakin/padme was what it was and han/leia was immensely better but hey someone decided to kill off the entire original trio so whatever... and if these two ended well they’d have been a constant improvement, never mind the symbolism - you had anakin who was a no one and married a space princess but ended up tragically because he went to the dark side and she could do nothing for him, then anakin’s daughter who was a space princess and married han who is also technically a no one since he didn’t even have a surname on his home planet, and if rey/ben had actually not.. had that ending you’d have closed the circle with space prince descended from both anakin and leia being brought back from the dark side with the help of another no one and finally the damned skywalker line would have gotten one 100% happy ending because it was supposed to be the ending.
like.
that’s something that thematically made so much sense I didn’t even think they wouldn’t do it.
and they did. and guess what of course people are pissed. because this movie about ignored themes, its own canon (from tfa and tlj) and didn’t accomplish one single thing except chewie getting his damned medal.
which, while something we all hoped would happen at some point, is hardly the one thing you should accomplish in a star wars movie supposed to end the goddamned cycle and which eventually ended up being prequel-level if not worse. because I mean, objectively I think the phantom menace was actually a better movie, and I would rewatch this over 2 and 3 just because the cgi in this movie didn’t hurt my eyes, but as bad as lucas got with the prequels, he never did a single character as dirty as disney did all the characters here. no, not even padme, and he did do padme dirty.
tldr: if people don’t get why you’d be pissed at how this movie ended idk what to tell them... but shit if it’s not worrying me that people apparently can’t get that it was a disaster on each single level it could have been. peace.

you're not worth a single fuck as a writer if you look at a character as complex and richly nuanced as finn and can't do anything with his arc. not one fuck

I've had a day and a half now to process TROS and I think I'm coming down on the side of "well, the sequel trilogy is OVER and we are now FREE" meaning it was a mixed bag overall, but I definitely want to put my grubby little fannish mitts all over it.

going through the t/ros tag and seeing a lot of disappointed reactions; i'm so glad i had absolutely zero expectations for this movie and my only wish was for it to not feel 10h long as the last one did. i genuinely had fun watching it. was some of it completely ridiculous? did i laugh at inappropriate moments? do i love how there's absolutely no explanation for some plot points whatsoever? absolutely but i was entertained and for now that's enough to be content \o/

The Last Jedi resolved the intrigue surrounding the heroine of this new sequel-trilogy, Rey, and her parentage with a gracefully simple, bold assertion: Rey is... just Rey. Not the daughter of some space aristocracy or legacy lineage, but a hero of her own making. [...] That Rey’s parents were ordinary people meant anyone from anywhere could be born a hero; what determined a person’s place in the world was who they chose to be, rather than their last name. “Rey is our protagonist. And the truth is, in the story, the toughest possible thing for her to hear is, you know, you’re not gonna get the easy answer that you’re so-and-so’s daughter, this is your place,” [Rian] Johnson told me after The Last Jedi’s release. “You’re gonna have to stand on your own two feet and define yourself in this world.”
Instead of taking the baton from Last Jedi and running with it to new heights, The Rise of Skywalker retreats right back into the safety of nostalgia. [...] It’s as if Abrams and Terrio scrambled for a loophole specifically to mollify the “fans” upset that this hero—worse, this girl—dared to wield such incredible abilities with only her own strength [...] Bookending the saga Anakin began with the story of a girl from nowhere who sets right what he helped unbalance might have been resonant. But who cares for that when there’s another billion-dollar franchise to set up and potential spin-offs to tease?

Imho any way to rationalize the ending other than “bad writing” is a dissonant tragedy. The movie is trying to sell you this as a hopeful ending if not a full HEA, but symbolically Rey is on a dead planet, the place where the Skywalker story hadn’t even begun and where the family was trapped/enslaved, back to where she was at the beginning. If you’re arguing in a Watsonian way, Rey’s all smiley at the end because she’s back to her bad coping mechanisms, regressed completely now that Ben’s gone.
yeah at this point it’s impossible for me to rationalize and watsonian-ize this shitty writing. It’s just a tragedy being passed off as a hopeful ending. They even tried to rehash RotJ’s ending (I MEAN... FUCKING EWOKS, MAN), which already felt dissonant back then given Vader’s death, but it feels thrice as dissonant and inappropriate because Ben’s death is a million times thematically worse than Vader AND THEY JUST PRETENDED IT ISN’T.
Like... Ben just DIED, with a sad smile on his face, having just kissed his love for the first and last time and given his WHOLE LIFE TO HER, and we’re supposed to care that Rey is reunited with fucking bb-8 or that Lando is bonding with Jannah. And there’s a trio hug. Forreal. I can’t explain how much this disgusts me, it has written all over it “stoic virginal heroine dodges dick-shaped bullet and spends the rest of her life remaining pure, with her wholesome friends and... no, wait, she actually goes to die of boredom and loneliness on a desert planet to please fanboys”. FUCK THIS NOISE.

I just realized that J. J used the Force Bond for exposition.
Literally one of the most beautiful concepts on Ben and Rey's relationship. The plot devise that Rian specifically made so they could talk without Rey jumping over Ben with her sword. He. Used. It. For. His. Stupid. Rey. Palpatine. Shit.
The fucking disrespect.
Rian, I'm so sorry.

So like-- one reason I didn’t ship reylo back when tfa came out (in fact I hated it SO MUCH) was because I saw it as possibly becoming yet another “the girl has to fix the man at the sacrifice of herself” bit. But that didn’t happen. It just didn’t. /SHRUG
Kylo has to pull his own head out of his ass. He runs to her, lightsaber gone, his ‘costume’ gone and goes after her with only a blaster. A blaster. Against Palpatine and the Knights of Ren and all of Palpatine’s horde of followers.
Rey didn’t force him to grow. Rey saw a glimpse of who he was under the mask and under the postering during The Last Jedi and through their bond she liked the person underneath the darkness. Rey told him, ‘I wanted to take your hand. Ben’s hand.’, not Kylo. And then she says without saying “but that doesn’t seem to be what you are going to build yourself towards so I am going to go and I am going to face the bad guy without you.”
And then Kylo decides he doesn’t want to BE Kylo anymore. That he wants to be ‘Ben’ for her. He wants to change. He wants to be better. He chases after her. Not the other way around. So all this “Rey is being forced as a woman to fix the man” is utter bullshit. It didn’t happen. Just because a man decided he wanted to be a better person for a woman he loved doesn’t make it that trope. People try to be better people all the time for the one’s they love. Rey did not have to do anything at the expense of herself. In fact she did the opposite. She shut him out. She actively avoided him. She set the boundary CLEAR. If you change, then we can be in each other’s lives, but until then? Boy bye.
So idk, i feel like it’s not a genuine criticism of the relationship. It willfully ignores the development through the three movies and it is just factually untrue.

Okay I have been obsessively thinking for days about Palpatine’s son.
WHAT could the life of such a person even be like? How on EARTH did he get away long enough to seemingly have a white-bread life with a wife and daughter even for six years? How was he well-adjusted enough to be able to do that?
Guesstimating based on the actor Billy Howle’s age, Palpatine’s son was about 30 when he died, and Rey was left on Jakku. We don’t really know how old she was, but an unconfirmed Variety magazine article put her at 5 years old when she was abandoned. If she’s 19 in TFA, that means Palpatine’s son would have been 25 when Rey was born, and:
Born 8 years after ROTS in 11 BBY
15 years old when the Empire fell
Options:
He was at least somewhat Force sensitive and raised by the baby-snatching Inquisitorius and Palpatine. When the Empire fell there was mass confusion and chaos, and he seized his chance and ran. Whatever he experienced made him sure that being murdered and abandoning his daughter to ruffians was preferable to having her go through the same thing that he did.
Palpatine wanted a heir and had a whole baby mill going on, either through cloning Ender’s Shadow-style or just a Mad Max: Fury Road-type harem. Only he had Henry VIII problems and they were all Force nulls, so he had them killed and disposed of. Secretly, one was saved by someone sympathetic. The kid was non-Force sensitive and grew up unknown by Palpatine until later, somehow, he was discovered.
His mother was a slave in Palpatine’s horrible harem dungeon.
His mother was a powerful woman surviving by climbing the ranks of Palpatine’s Persian-style harem where political schemes happen behind the scenes and backstabbing is a way of life.
He was a clone and there was no mother. There were many other cloned brothers and sisters like him and they were all made to compete so that only the strongest would live to serve Palpatine. He saw most of them die one by one over the years, but he survived.
He was non-Force sensitive but still raised close to Palpatine for his theoretical future usefulness. After all, he had some of Palpatine’s genetic material, so he had to have some skill, right? Was he a smart political operator? Could he be useful as an agent of some kind? Overall Palpatine was always disappointed, and he and his mother suffered horrible treatment because of his failure.
Did Vader know about him? I have to assume not, since he would have been competition unless he wasn’t Force-sensitive. Did anybody else know about him?  There are so many possibilities and I have so many questions. I am desperate for information and would unironically read an entire book about him OR A 100K FIC if you happen to know of one.

I feel that the sudden explosion of discourse is (partly) j*hn boyega's fault. Did he really needed to go on a rampage against sw fans? Really??? And not against the racism in the fandom (which would have been completely fair) but a /ship/???
… honestly, I kept my mouth shut about this until now bc I was out and I didn’t wanna get into discourse, but… as someone who does like the guy I’m incredibly disappointed in his behavior and in how people are reacting to it. like. first of all the entire drama could have been solved by him saying ‘I was joking but I understand why you think it’s crass sorry about it’ and leaving it there and instead he kept on… harping on fans specifically and not as a general declaration, then he went and diverted the attention going after the r/eylo crowd which whether he likes it or not has actually supported him and his attitude has opened the floodgates and like… it’s been three days, I’ve seen people wishing a minor who also brought KMT her fanbook to kill herself and tweet to her father that they hope he finds her corpse in the bathroom (???) and various other amenities and like… that’s not okay. period. he should say something already to at least distance himself from this bullshit and I’m very disappointed he’s not doing that, because whatever the fuck he was thinking, justifying going after any fans is wrong and opening the floodgates for the antis to do that because hey he did it so who cares let’s be even worse people is……. just…… yikes. very much yikes.
on top of that…. I can’t with people comparing what oscar said to what he did because oscar went off at disney during press releases and voiced his dissatisfaction with his arc and the story decisions (CONSIDERING THAT THEY MADE POE A FORMER SPACE DRUG RUNNER HE SHOULD DAMN WELL BE PISSED OFF) but he hasn’t once went off at the fans or dismissed part of the fanbase or attack specific people, while john basically… went off at single fans who were saying perfectly worded/polite criticism which means they’re put on target too, never mind again opening the floodgates re bullying a part of the fandom that has been bullied since 2015 guys let’s be fucking real, never mind that 90% of the criticism he got was from fanboys who couldn’t handle having a black lead, not from freaking rey/kylo shippers. and that’s another thing.
but the rest… I mean. people are cheering for that? going like ‘oh wow he’s such a king baby go ahead end them’?? guys that’s not being a king, he’s not even going after actual racist idiots, that’s being wildly unprofessional and making sure to piss people off. like. as much as people like it or not, re/ylo shippers paid money to see his movies and a lot of them actually like his character/support his work. the moment you sign on to sw who has one of the most toxic fandoms in existence - I mean not touching the luke vs han shit in the eighties, people basically bullied that poor kid who played anakin in episode one to the point that he quit acting and he ended up in a psychiatric facility and surely the fan reaction to that movie didn’t help not ruining his life completely and that’s not even the beginning - you know you’re in for being roasted by a bunch of assholes. and like… sorry but you sign on for that, you actually handle it pretty nicely for four years which I 100% commended him for and now he goes off on a part of fandom that wasn’t behind most of his harassing like this and I have to buy that hey bullying fans is fine? like I had to read ‘john started the year bullying assholes in this fandom how great I hope he keeps on doing it’? do we all realize what the fuck does this mean? like ffs people tore martin freeman to shreds for having been vocally angry about john/lock fans sending death threats to his wife and kids and he hadn’t exactly put the single people on spot nor made the names (and tbh he was 100% right, at that point you have all the rights to be crass) but now this behavior is okay because… it’s people shipping something you don’t like…?
sorry but a fucking fictional ship is no basis to bully anyone. idc what fucking fictional ship is it because the nature of r/eylo is not the point nor its canon status. and people cheering like this on someone for behaving unprofessionally af is… really… concerning me. because he basically went off on fans. singularly. who had… like…. done nothing specific to him because those people criticized his not exactly stellar joke on instagram, they didn’t go off on him out of nothing.
like. sorry but if you’re a public figure you should be able to handle this shit better than that. and the fact that he made… those… really bad taste comments about KMT deleting herself from social media (AND IT WAS BOTH FANBOYS AND ANTIS MAKING HER DO IT not r/eylos let’s get that straight) while KMT got the shaft in tros more than he did and got the shaft by disney as much as him if not worse is really not looking well. the fact that KMT has been dealing with this entire mess way more graciously and professionally than he’s doing also says a lot about what’s happening.
tldr: yes I agree and if he wanted to complain about racist assholes (which is 100% his right to) he had a thousand better and more professional ways to do it than this. he’s a public figure in one of the biggest franchises in existence known for its toxic fandom. this behavior is 100% not okay. and like he could have gone off on any faction in this fandom I’d stick with my opinion, it’s not just bc I like r/eylo. creators/actors should never advocate for this behavior ever and if they have issues with some fans they should just have the studio backing them up for suing which is a thing I 100% would endorse, but they shouldn’t… do this. like… sorry, but he fucked up. I like his acting, I like(d) him until three days ago, I love his character, but this was fucked up and he needs to own up to it because if we actually normalize this behavior from media creators and actors we’re fucked. like, 100% fucked. it’s nowhere near acceptable to insult like that people who don’t have your influence, who aren’t famous and who didn’t do shit to you except criticizing you for a thing that wasn’t exactly the most refined joke in existence.
(that said, if he hadn’t said it specifically re that character or if he said it with his friends messing around I wouldn’t gaf, but the way he did it was just… bad pr. very bad pr.)
ADDENDUM: as stated, i don’t agree with actors taking fans’ abuse on social media - they should absolutely feel free to block someone or press charges if it becomes bad and as stated the studio SHOULD back them up (I mean… if I had been the voltron actors/writers I’d have sued 80% of that fandom long before S5) but they shouldn’t downright go and do… this. it’s unprofessional. and if you’re a public figure you should like….. have some damned responsibility for your actions. he’s an actor in a multi-million dollars franchise, those people are no one or sure as hell they don’t have his influence or fame. it’s just nowhere near okay to do that and I’m dying on this hill. peace.

listen if they wanted to make rey all emoass and lonesome isolating herself from everyone she loves on a shitty planet, why was bb-8 with her??? bb-8 is a resistance droid and poe’s droid first and foremost????? how does this help in her arc about wanting to belong cos it only means she’s miserable and right back to square one where she started pre-tfa??????
so the only logical conclusion is she went there just to bury the lightsabres cos she doesn’t think they belong to her and so she spends one night in tatooine watching the pretty sunset and thinking about chosen family then gets on her ship the next day and flies back to finn and poe to be the canon ot3 we deserve and being happy and having her found family and sense of belonging at last :)
