"Oh, You came to tell me happy birthday?..Heh, thank you for your consideration."
. ݁₊ ⊹ . ݁˖ . ݁
-----------------------------
HII EVERYONE! So since it's Twyla's Birthday today I thought I'd give everyone a little treat and show off what I've been working on behind the scenes the last couple weeks.
-----------------------------
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
-----------------------------
The prefect of Ramshackle, popular amongst her peers for her laid back demeanor. She loves the arts and expressing herself through multiple mediums. Specifically through fashion, often choosing to dress in alternative clothing styles. Despite the visual difference, she blends in quite well among the other students. Even with her temperamental companions.
-----------------------------
This is Twyla's new (and final) design! Let's talk about her little bit.
She's technically twisted from two different characters. Them being Bruno, from Encanto, and the three Fates from Hercules.
The three Fates are actually where I got the idea to give her the hobby of sewing, because I wanted her to have an association with string. Also they inspired the name of her unique magic magic.
Bruno mostly inspired her unique magic (like how it works and what it does) as well as parts of her personality and design.
Specifically he inspired her hoodie.
Aside from that though, design wise I also was inspire by other popular cartoon characters like The Hex Girls from Scooby-Doo, and Gwen from Total Drama.
I specifically wanted to go with a more grunge or goth aesthetic, mostly because we don't really see said aesthetics explored much through the canon cast, so it would give a good visual difference. Also she just matched ramshackle more.
But let's get to some actual character facts shall we?
Twyla is left-handed, but is slightly ambidextrous when it comes to using her hands for anything other than writing.
Her favorite food is pancakes, when asked why she just blinked and shrugged. "I dunno' know. Just make me feel like a little kid again."
Her least favorite food is Brussel-Sprouts, which she also allergic to.
She's been known to have several hobbies including sewing, drawing, designing, reading, writing, scrapbooking, photography, gaming, and baking.
It is also good to note that she has ADHD and it's hard to keep her attention one thing for long periods of time.
Atleast when it comes to things like school work. Her hobbies take up most of her free time.
She has lilapsiphobia, or the intense fear of tornadoes and hurricanes. She developed it due to a traumatic event during her childhood.
She is an orphan with a deceased mother and a "missing" father.
She use to work many different jobs when in the foster care system, ranging from an unground boxer to maid at a maid cafe.
She was in the fostercare system for a long time, until she turned sixteen. Which is when her inheritance kicked in and allowed her to move back in to her childhood home.
Until 6 months later when she was transported into Twst.
Her favorite flowers are Holly-Hocks.
She has been given many different nicknames by the rest of the cast bit to her the strangest happens to be what Vil calls her "French Fry#1"
Speaking of nicknames, Floyd often refers to her as "Manatee" or "Manny-Chan".
Let's hear some of her homescreen voicelines.
"Oh, hey, you look tired. Do you need take a break in the guest room?"
"OH! Shit. Forgot that I had homework for Trein today. *Sigh* I guess I'll just have to do it during Alchemy today."
"Huh? Oh yeah, I'm just drawing while waiting for class to start. You can join me if you'd like!"
"*Huff* *Huff*, huh? Oh yeah, I'm fine. Just, uhm, got distracted watching the squirrels and I had to run to make sure I wasn't late is all. Don't worry."
"Where's Grim? I don't know, probably off committing crimes against humanity...AGAIN."
"Uuuuugh, Crowley keeps bugging me about some stupid fight between a Pomefiore and Savannaclaw student. Why can't people at this school just learn to make up on their own?"
"Ramshackle dorm actually has some pretty neat history if you can find some of the old N.R.C. school books. Did you know that Ramshackle has never had a housewarden? Only ever Prefects."
"Man, if I have to hear Ace and Deuce bicker about something dumb one more time I think I might actually commit murder."
"Heh, Azuls flustered face is so funny. He's makes it so easy to want to bully him I almost can't stop myself."
"Leona I swear to fu- Oh! You're not Leona...don't worry about what I was just about to say, okay?"
-----------------------------
*flops down face down on mattress*
Ahdhskahsshskajsjakshdbxhsusa..
Idk man my brain is tired and overworked. Also say happy birthday to me, it's my birthday I've been working hard.

𝗠𝗢𝗡𝗦𝗧𝗘𝗥 𝗛𝗜𝗚𝗛 𝗣𝗟𝗢𝗧 𝗕𝗨𝗡𝗡𝗜𝗘𝗦
So, after posting my fancast the other day, we have finally arrived at the OCs that go with it!! Honestly, I’m so excited to share these babies with you guys; Monster High was one of my first hyperfixations ever, and despite how long it’s been since I properly interacted with it, I’ve never stopped loving it. So without further ado, please observe my beautiful freaky babies!!
(Also gonna tag my beloveds @manyfandomocs and @ginevrastilinski-ocs, because I know they’ve been waiting for this!! <3)
Nyx Darkfeather, a fallen angel, Jackson/Holt ship. The daughter of two angels who fell from Heaven. A new student at Monster High because her parents homeschooled her for a long time, scared of her being hurt for what she is since fallen angels are so rare. Very stone-faced, blunt, and closed-off, but eventually gets pulled into Frankie’s friend group after they make it their mission to befriend her, and winds up slowly being endeared by Jackson and Holt. Pretty powerful as the child of two angels, with umbrakinesis and some psychic powers, but she doesn’t use them very often. Also becomes besties with Twyla, since they’re both very used to the shadows.
Tumblr media
Aiko Inoue, daughter of the Slit-Mouthed Women, Deuce ship. An exchange student from Japan who eventually decides to stay and learn at Monster High. Kind of has a bad reputation at first because of her mother and how quiet she is, but eventually people start to warm up to her. Gets close to Deuce after she gets assigned to tutor him in History of the Undead shortly after he and Cleo break up, and they eventually wind up becoming a super cute couple. Intensely shy and awkward and often uses her spirit powers to turn invisible or disappear for long periods of time, but also very caring and loyal. Becomes really good friends with the hybrids, especially Neighthan and Serena.
Tumblr media
Chester Hoppington, a wererabbit, Gil ship. Only attends Monster High in person part-time because he cares for his eight younger siblings while his parents work. An incredible artist who meets Gil when he decides to go swimming in the school pool while Chester is there doing a drawing of the water. Incredibly sweet and caring as a result of having to be a babysitter so often, but also surprisingly stubborn and never afraid to speak out for the people he cares about. Has bunny ears and a little tail, and also has a habit of rapidly tapping his feet when he’s frustrated or angry. Eventually gets pulled into the ghouls’ friendship, and even becomes really good friends with Lagoona despite her and Gil being exes.
Tumblr media
Matthew Steam, a robot, Frankie ship. Robecca’s “twin” brother since Hezekiah built them at the same time, and got dismantled shortly after her when he tried to confront the Gargoyles about what they did to her. A lot more socially awkward than his sister, but surprisingly adjusts to modern life a lot easier because he was always more interested in science and mechanics and he gets incredibly excited about all the new advancements. A total nerd who goes on a lot of excited rants about his interests, which Frankie is only too happy to listen to. Also an iconic sibling duo with Robecca.
Tumblr media
Bonita Calaveras, a skeleton, Heath ship. Skelita’s older sister by eleven months, so they’ve always been in the same school year. Does the transfer with her sister and Jinafire, because she’s always seen it as her job to protect Skelita. Tries to keep Heath away from Skelita when she learns how much of a flirt he is, but just winds up falling for him instead. Fiercely loving and protective of those she cares about, but also sometimes forgets to take care of herself. The best sibling duo with Skelita, and also comes really good friends with Jinafire because they enjoy judging people together.
Tumblr media
Dabria Yelps, a zombie, Draculaura ship. Ghoulia’s younger sibling who uses they/she pronouns, and definitely the more creativity-minded of the two; an incredible writer who wants to publish romance novels one day. Also a hopeless lesbian who falls in love with Draculaura almost the moment they meet her, but it takes a while for them to get together because Draculaura still needs to get over her breakup with Clawd and Dabira is way too awkward to properly confess for the longest time. She’s also best friends with Howleen and Twyla, and kinda goes through it for a bit during the whole Shadow Genie ordeal.
Tumblr media
Gaia Nature, child of Mother Nature, Abbey ship. Homeschooled in the forest for a good portion of their life, but finally allowed to attend Monster High because they’ve always wanted to meet more kids their age. A total and complete sweetheart because they’ve always been taught to be kind to all living creatures, but also tends to be kind of naïve and overly trusting because they haven’t really been around actual people very much. They and Abbey are a total opposites attract couple, but Abbey is very soft for them and also manages to toughen them up a bit, so they work very well together. Definitely besties with Rochelle, Robecca, and Venus, and frequently teams up with Venus on environment-saving endeavors.
Tumblr media
Chord Nightingale, a siren, Manny ship. Head of the Monster High choir, which Manny is forced to join as a punishment from Headmistress Bloodgood after beating up another student. Totally outgoing and sunshiney, which doesn’t allow him to get long with Manny at first. Mostly confident but also scared of ever accidentally enchanting someone with his siren song after an incident that happened when he was a kid that he’s never told anyone about. Eventually grows close to Manny and the two of them start to open up to each other, until they finally get together. Doesn’t really have many friends despite being a social butterfly, but eventually becomes pretty close with the ghost crew - Operetta, Scarah, Serena, and Johnny Spirit - and they become kind of an iconic group.

my 5 favorite fics that i’ve written (for fic writer appreciation day)
tagged by @lilythesilly, thanks friend!
Tagging @rosedavid @alienajackson @hippolotamus @apothecarose @mostlyinthemorning @treluna4 @lizzie-bennetdarcy and anyone else who wants to play!
so bitter and so sweet (david/patrick, stevie/twyla)
Still reeling from a bad breakup and a professional setback, David moves to Schitt’s Creek and takes a job at Stevie’s coffee shop. He’s definitely not looking for love in this tiny town, but a cute customer in mid-range denim offering business advice might just change his mind.
A story about friendships, coming together, and plenty of coffee.
if i’m not beyond repair (david/patrick)
“Patrick Brewer?” the woman on the other end asks when he picks up.
“This is he.”
“Hi Mr. Brewer, it’s Stacy from Elmdale Hospital. You’re listed as the emergency contact for a patient who was just brought in?”
“Who is it?” Patrick asks, wracking his brain to try to remember who locally would list him as an emergency contact. There’s no one he’s that close to anymore. The only person here he’s ever been an emergency contact for is—
“David Rose.”
His ex-boyfriend. Right.
the ocean grew hands to hold me (david/patrick)
To David, there has always been something so soothing about being near water. He really prefers the ocean, but lakes and rivers provide much the same effect. True, he never goes in the water; he can swim, but the water is full of unidentified horrors, not to mention the havoc it wreaks on his hair and skin. He doesn’t like nature, or really, even going outside very much, but there’s something about staring out at a body of water and listening to the lapping of the waves that has always brought him peace, even in the most tumultuous periods of his life.
home where my love lies waiting (david/patrick)
Five times Patrick kisses David on the forehead, and one time David kisses him.
the lie between your teeth (david/patrick)
The man–David, 30, 79 miles away–is giving the camera an imperious stare, thick eyebrows knitted together, dark stubble perfectly highlighting his face, lips parted just slightly. The only word Patrick can think of to describe him is beautiful and even that feels inadequate. He stares at the picture for so long, waiting for his brain to come back online, that his phone screen dims and shuts off.
AU in which David and Patrick meet via a dating app, or the answer to the question, "what if David's 79-mile-away match from 2x07 was actually Patrick?"

I saw someone make a really cool twyla redesign recently and it sparked my interest in her character. I looked into the origins of the boogeyman a bit and found it was originally created in the 16th century so I gave her a dress inspired by the time period. the sleeves have the original design from her shirt. she keeps her door handle earrings and gets a lion door knocker on her choker because it looks cool. also claws because claws are cool. <3

i may have made this post before, but how I got into collecting the monster high G3 dolls is kinda funny. First I wasn't in the fandom, but I saw polls being put out and that's how I learned about Twyla. In the tags I was like "I just met her and I love her already" and that was that. THEN I GOT INTO MONSTER HIGH and was searching around the wiki pages and this and that to actually learn about it. Somewhere along the line my mom and I were looking at dolls and said "wow, these are pricy"... But we decided to settle on Twyla, and I made a post here saying "and she'll be the only doll I'll have, promise."
On my birthday, my grandparents gave me 50 bucks to spend on whatever the heck I wanted, so I went a little crazy. After I spent five minutes straight cooing at all of the adorable toys in the toy section. I saw Twyla, grabbed her, and that's where it began. BECAUSE A FEW DAYS LATER, I WAS SURPRISED WITH TORALEI. My dad straight up said "she (Twyla) needed a sister".
And throughout July, I got surprised with another, and another so I said "guess I'm starting a cult!"
And every now and then I'd go to walmart and my mom would say "pick out a doll" so I sure as heck did. then there was a stagnant period, which is understandable, but I told my folks that at some point, didn't have to be right then and there, I'd like to get Lagoona. Like just to remind them. WELL YESTERDAY I WAS SURPRISED WITH A PACKAGE, AND THERE SHE WAS. So my collection is considered complete, I'm not gonna be hassling anyone for any more dolls...but if anybody was nice enough to get me a guy doll or Abbey Bominable, I wouldn't say no!

Can Fiction Change the World?
I was recently asked the question of whether or not I believe that fictional writing can change the world. As a voracious consumer of fiction for the majority of my life, I did not hesitate to answer in the affirmative. Of course fictional writing can change the world. It took me a bit longer to answer the follow up question: “How?” I started thinking about the great titans of fiction writing. The academic elite will cite writers like Shakespeare, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, and Faulkner, but I think about fictional stories I read in my youth and young adult years – both for school and for pleasure. These included To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, The Giver by Lois Lowry, and The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood. Today’s post won’t touch on any of these stories, though I could write much about them. Instead, I will focus on authors Toni Morrison and Ursula Le Guin.
It is undeniable that these two women are titans in (and beyond) their field. Morrison authored more than a dozen novels. Britannica cites her as being notable for her examination of the experiences of Black Americans and her exploration of unjust society, as well as her “use of fantasy… sinuous poetic style, and… rich interweaving of the mythic.” Le Guin, like author Morrison, was renowned for her work. She was also prolific – having written more than 100 novels and short stories throughout her career. According to the New York Times, Le Guin was well-known for bringing “literary depth and a tough-minded feminist sensibility” to her works. They noted that she believed her writing could be a “moral force” which helps individuals imagine the outcomes resulting from their actions.
Just because Morrison and Le Guin’s writings are works of fiction, this doesn’t mean they can’t change the world. I would argue that fictional writing changes the world by allowing us to examine what is happening around us now, connecting us to what has happened in the past, and allowing us to reimagine what might happen in the future. It can warn of dystopian futures and can challenge social norms which are problematic or unjust. Fictional works also often contain political commentary. While some might see fictional writing as nothing more than a way to escape our lives for an hour or two, I see it as a broad genre that can cause us to critically reflect upon society and our own humanity.
Le Guin’s “The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas” certainly does this. In this short story, she describes an idyllic society where everyone is happy. Nothing exists that may cause strife – be it kings or swords, police or bombs. On the surface, everything about Omelas is perfect. Then her story shifts. There’s one thing everyone, from their adolescent years on, knows but does not openly speak of. There is a child, locked in a basement closet, naked and covered in sores, who is only fed half a bowl of cornmeal and grease each day. Everyone knows that their society will fall if the child’s suffering stops. The majority of the people accept this – this child must suffer for everyone else to be happy and prosper – but some young people struggle to accept this. Le Guin describes their disgust, anger, outrage, and impotence in this situation. “They would like to do something for the child. But there is nothing they can do.” So, what do people do when they cannot continue living with this reality? They walk. Le Guin says they go into the darkness, never coming back. They leave behind the happiness and prosperity and beauty of Omelas, having no idea what awaits them. She closes her story however, saying, “... they seem to know where they are going, the ones who walk away from Omelas.” There is certainly plenty of commentary here on systems of oppression and hierarchies. I will dig more deeply into this in a moment. Before I do, I want to give a brief summary of a short story by Toni Morrison.
In Morrison’s “Recitatif,” she follows two girls – Twyla and Roberta – who room together for a brief period of time at St. Benny’s, a church-run shelter for children. As in life, there is a hierarchy, or pecking order, at the shelter. Twyla shares how the older girls cruelly picked on and brutalized them and how looked down upon they were by the “real orphans.” Twyla’s mother danced at night and could not care for her while Roberta’s mother was sick for a time, unable to provide her child with adequate care. Twyla expressed her embarrassment when her mother came to visit, with her unpolished manner, shoddy clothing, and lack of maternal instincts. Roberta, in their childhood, never judged her for this like others did. It is part of the reason they grew so close when they roomed together, but this changed as they got older. When Twyla was poor and working at a diner, Roberta laughed at and was dismissive of her, but when she was married and had a higher income family 12 years later, Roberta ecstatically greeted her and invited her out for coffee. Twyla struggled to make sense of the two interactions. When she asked Roberta why she had been so cold to her that day in the diner, Roberta replied, “Oh, Twyla, you know how it was in those days: black-white. You know how everything was.” Twyla didn’t know, and it became clear as they interacted more that Roberta’s perspective as a white woman of means did not align with hers as a Black woman who had grown up with less-than.
These two stories explore hierarchy and oppression in slightly different ways. Le Guin creates an unrelatable idyllic world which includes familiar notes of oppression and abuse that we see in our world today. The idea of putting the good of the many ahead of the one is a common one. I think about our carceral system where there are occasionally folks who get imprisoned for decades-long (or even life-long) sentences and are eventually found to be innocent of the crimes they were convicted of. Our priority to make the world “safer” by putting criminals behind bars – knowing that our judicial system is flawed and that it sometimes convicts innocent people – is justified by a system that says it is better to harm some innocent people than to leave criminals on the street. Oppress some so that others can have better lives. In Morrison’s story, Twyla, who primarily lived on the lower rungs of the hierarchical ladder,  earns worse treatment than Roberta, who – by the nature of the color of her skin, her background, and her means – ranked higher. In the story, increased status and privilege grants one the right to oppress and mistreat others who are lower on the hierarchical ladder. Both of these stories are fiction, but there are elements within them that are very reflective of the real-world.
If I had to pick which author most effectively engaged me, I would pick Le Guin. This may be, at least in part, due to the discomfort I experienced in reading Morrison’s story; it hits close to home. I grew up in a town directly adjacent to one of the worst places to live in America if you are a Black person. Racial injustice is still pervasive there, and I spent my formative years being wholly unaware of this. It wasn’t until I went off to college that I learned about my implicit biases and how I, like Roberta, was perpetuating white supremacy without realizing it. Something that is often said in anti-racist work is that we are not born racist. Racist ideologies are taught – sometimes directly, sometimes indirectly. I am still actively hunting for unconscious biases and prejudices that linger in the back of my mind and working to do better when interacting with others who society would deem as below me on the hierarchical ladder. Le Guin, however, packaged the lesson in my favorite format – fantasy. Omelas is clearly a fictional place. It looks nothing like any place that exists on earth. It reminded me a lot of The Giver, actually, in that it explored a very real, very problematic issue in the relatively safe confines of a fictional story. For all intents and purposes, I can take the lessons from Omelas without having to worry that I will ever live there. In Morrison’s story, there is a very real possibility that I could be, or even have been, like Roberta. It is likely I will never know exactly how much harm I did to others when I was a less informed person. But, reading both of these fictional stories caused me to pause and consider the real-world issues they touched on. That, in my mind, is the first step to creating change in the world.

A little birdy told me you were having period cramps so I came here as fast as I possibly could to send you some Ichigo n' Bakugou lovin'
As insufferable as they both are with their trademark snark and brash attitudes, they're both very, very perceptive men and they're quick to pick up on you trying to hide the period pains and the cramps that come with it
Bakugou speaks in a much softer tone, his touch lingering over your skin for a couple seconds longer whenever he strokes your shoulder. He's seen first hand from his mother about just how bad monthly pangs can get and he's both gentle, yet firm, to offer you a massage. If you try to deny his offer, he shakes his head and he's already guiding you towards the bedroom
"Stop trying to fuckin' hide it and sit down," sounds suspiciously a lot like 'just let me take care of you' and there's a hint of concern in that low growl of his
He's insistently stubborn, refusing to budge or let you go until he's absolutely sure that the tension in your shoulders has alleviated. After tending to your body, he cooks up your favourite meal, having perfected it down to the very last detail
Ichigo is just a liiittle bit more insufferable when he notices that you're in a pretty bad mood. That boy likes to taunt and push you around in a playful manner, but when you snap back at him, baring your teeth, he backs off with wide eyes and raised brows
He honestly looks like some kind of bristled cat
He watches you stalk off in tense silence, wanting to ask a sassy, 'Jeez, what's eating your ass this morning?' but he just barely manages to hold his tongue back from muttering the words out of his smart mouth
Instead, he lets out a small sigh, and approaches you in an apologetic manner; gently wrapping his arms around your waist and pulling your back flush to his firm chest, before nuzzling his face into the crook of your neck, the bridge of his nose ghosting along your warm skin
"Twyla... " He murmurs your name quietly, his voice much more softer than usual, with his lips peppering tiny kisses all along the side of your throat, and he picks up on all of the sensitive spots that make you shiver
Me reading this in real time:
Tumblr media
Knifie I will let u kith me back a thousand times and then I will proceed to kiss u back AGAIN another 10,000 times.
Pls I love them both so much :((((( 💖💖💖💖
Love how attentive Bakugou is here, n how he gently forces his way into taking care of me cus knowing me, if I thought it was inconveniencing him I prolly would decline. Crying at how I would be thanking him n telling him he didn’t have to and he just gets annoyed and straight up says “Let me love you, shitty woman” with a bit of a chuckle. He’s so sweet to me. It isn’t u til after the massage that I notice his lingering touches, the extra warmth, eye— 🥹🥹🥹.
And Ichigo? Man 🧎🏾‍♀️. We prolly would push each others buttons at times when teasing each other, but I appreciate so much that he can realize sometimes it’s the wrong time and that he goes to make up for it 🥺. I would melt very shortly after he murmurs my name during his embrace, starting to cry once he starts kissing my skin. Would feel so bad about snapping like that and absolutely crave the warmth he’s offering pls, I would crumble 😭😭😭. The way he chooses to go after me instead of leaving me be to stew on things 🥹🥹🥹. I love him so fucking much.
Thank you sm knifie I am coming to your house with treats and a plushie of a little spider with a knife and another smol plushie of a black bird with a red (hawks) feather in its beak.

I MADE THEIR Z!!!!
FINALLY. FINALLY IT’S AZTEC HOLY HECC
It can stop bothering me.
So! Allow me to introduce you to Zinnia! Etzio and Cardinale’s youngest sibling!
More on her and some world building under the cut
Zinnia, or Zin as dubbed by her bigger brother Etzio, is 8-9 years younger than card (roughly round 16-17 in this reference) and finally has inherited her mother’s Flora affinity. In a strange way.
First off, she was a late bloomer
Tumblr media
Most Flora aligned folk have their flora of choice begin to sprout at a young age, roughly 3-4 years old. If a child hasn’t present a sprout, then it’s likely they aren’t flora aligned, though of course there are exceptions.
Flowers are the most common type of growth, but there also has been bushes, fruit plants, some veggies, even some more out there plants like fly traps and rafflesia. Rarely there are trees (That grow to be Bonsais) and Fungi.
Zinnia, contrary to her name, turned out to eventually grow mushrooms, Which confused the whole family but they took it in stride. Even more so when her flora powers leaned towards the end of the life cycle.
While she is capable of new growth and flora control, she is stronger and excels at Rot and Decay.
And this plays into her inner turmoil. Etzio is a widely renown Adventurer and Future King. Cardinale, while not nearly as renown (and very happy like that) is a budding historian and glad to not have the full burden of a kingdom on his shoulders (fully willing to help in the future)
But... Where does that leave her?
Stuck in the middle with no idea who she is supposed to be. There’s already a legacy and those it’ll be passed to. And instead she’s, somehow, the odd one out. A Rot affinity in a kingdom of life and peach blossoms.
Well that’s what she eventually sets out to do. There’s a legend her brothers discovered about an Oracle older than their era. So she sets out to find this Oracle and ask what it is she’s supposed to do.
The problem is... She does it alone.
Along this journey, she runs into many trials and walls and detours and puzzles. Some she can solve on her own with some outside thinking, others... well she wishes she had someone from her family or friends because they’d be able to solve it.
It comes to a head when she ends up in tatters, cold and wet, after having been beaten soundly at something that was simply too big for her to handle on her own. So... she has to give up. So she returns home, defeated
But her brothers and cousins, who were ready to head out to find her after allowing her requested grace period, are there to help pick her up. They remind her that she doesn’t have to do it alone, and it’s okay, they’re here now.
And most importantly, that only Zinnia herself can decide who she is and what she’s supposed to do.
With some renewed hope, and her family behind her, they set out again to find the Oracle. And turns out, it’s easier to do so with a brother who can read dead languages, another brother who is very well versed with ancient puzzles, a cousin who can manipulate gravity, and another good at sword fighting,
So finally, they find the Oracle, and Twyla reminds Zin one last time that only she can tell her what she’s supposed to do.
With that in mind, Zinnia instead asks instead if she could help her discover why her affinity is Rot.
The Oracle points them to the Titanic Forest, where it runs deep as an ocean (yes i loved that idea)
There, AZTEC ventures as deep as they can go and discover the long forgotten Kingdom of Rot. And here they make the acquaintance of it’s King and Prince, who are very intrigued by these foreigners, and the King gladly explains Decay to Zinnia.
Turns out, she’s now a personification of that Cycle. New growth and Decay in the same breath (Decay as an extant form of life anyone? ;P)
With this discovery, they end up re-kindling the connection between the Kingdom of Rot and the world above, even if it must be slow, the connection is there again.
And later in life, she becomes the Queen of that kingdom. Just as she was meant to be.

PHL-9: Dance Masterpieces
Presented By: Philadelphia Ballet
Philadelphiaballet.org
Ballet has a term called “Ballon” which means that the dancers have the illusion of weightlessness. An ensemble of great dancers who have devoted hundreds and thousands of hours in the studio honing their bodies make it seem like the laws of physics don’t apply to them anymore. In Dance Masterpieces Philadelphia Ballet tries to revive three pieces from choreographers that have put thousands of days into crafting silhouettes and movement on global stages. In essence, they were trying to create the illusion that the laws of time didn’t apply anymore and that the pieces seemed as fresh and innovative as they had decades before when they premiered. Let’s see what happens when a premiere company in Philadelphia dabbles in time travel.
Tumblr media
The River: Choreography By Alvin Ailey and Score by Duke Ellington
This piece entertained and astonished us. The flowing of the performer’s bodies matched the flowing rhythms and cadences of Ellington’s music. Anyone who has seen Ailey’s work knows that Ailey composes in supine silhouettes and supple, fluid movements. Ailey loved to showcase the human form, its strength, its beauty, and its power. In this piece you saw the dancer’s muscles and tendons working and muscles working in ways that may seem impossible. The River works height into the composition to create the illusion of depth like we are sinking lower and lower into the water. the performers’ ability to live between the beats proved that artistry isn’t just accomplishing the choreography but breathing a story into it.

In The Middle Somewhat Elevated: Choreography By William Forsythe and Score By Thom Willems
We found ourselves torn by this piece. While it was a great showcase of the performer’s explosive energy and sharp angles it felt hopelessly rooted in the anarchic period that created it. The eighties babies amongst us might remember Willems music as the sound of Gucci and the catwalk. As an iconoclast, Forsythe was trying to pull ballet into the modern world. What we got was a choreography full of sharp lines and angles and stochastic movements, as percussive as the synth music that sounds like a cutlery drawer in the blender (we mean that in the most complimentary way it can be meant). Yet we couldn't take our eyes off of it which is a big credit to the ensemble and maybe Forsythe’s use of composition and aggressive style.
Tumblr media
In The Upper Room: Choreography by Twyla Tharp and Phillip Glass
Tharp was one of the names that we were excited about before we even walked in the door. We find Tharp a chaotic voice in the choreographer’s role yet hers was the piece that was making a clear-cut and definitive statement. The duality between street and pointe shoes, athletic wear and pajamas, vernacular movements, and a ballet style that was light on its feet was an essay that landed without saying a single word. The costumes took center stage in Tharp’s message. The style of the clothing forced the performers to move in ways that didn’t seem strictly traditional. As the costumes changed their movements and bodies changed. Because of that, there was a dialogue happening throughout the piece. All of this was set against the background of Glass’s score never settled on a single motif without changing ideas midstream.

FLP CHAPBOOK OF THE DAY: Uncertain Seasons by Ruth Harper
PREORDER NOW: https://www.finishinglinepress.com/product/uncertain-seasons-by-ruth-harper/
Uncertain Seasons reflects on the passage of time through distinct periods of the year as well as stages of life. From “December’s Encompassing Silence” to signs of “Rebirth” — from “Late Summer, Open Field” to the falling leaves of “Northern Ash,” these poems offer original perspectives on the world just outside the door. Authentic emotion and a passion for detail color these observations. A readers’ guide is included, making this collection of interest to book groups.
Ruth Harper is Professor Emerita of Counseling and Human Development at South Dakota State University, where she coordinated the college counseling and student affairs administration specialties for over 20 years. She co-authored four books in her field and has special interest in American Indian college student success, the role of tribal colleges in South Dakota, and college student mental health. Ruth holds a B.A. from Cornell College (Mt. Vernon, IA), an M.Ed. from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh (Oshkosh, WI), and a Ph.D. from Kansas State University (Manhattan, KS).
Ruth lives in Brookings, South Dakota, and is married to Lawrence Rogers, mother to adult daughters Libby and Maggie, and Nana to grandsons Max and Miles. She is currently on the board of the local PFLAG (Parents, Families, & Friends of Lesbians & Gays+) and the Advisory Council of the Boys & Girls Club of the Northern Plains (Brookings).
For Ruth, reading fiction and poetry has been a lifelong joy; in retirement, writing poetry is a meaningful pursuit and challenge.

ADVANCE PRAISE FOR Uncertain Seasons by Ruth Harper
There’s such a wide variety of soulful epiphanies in this beautiful little book, the author expressing, again and again, so creatively and persuasively, the conclusion she has come to after many years of consideration and re-consideration: “that love,/ is why we exist.” I urge you to spend some quiet time with these deeply meaningful poems. If you give them the time they deserve, you’ll be informed and heartened by them.
–Charles Woodard, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of English, South Dakota State University
In Ruth Harper’s debut poetry chapbook Uncertain Seasons, she draws readers into mindfulness. She turns chunks of floating ice into a way to see her own “jaggedness,” and the colors and sounds of spring into a language of exaltation. These still moments of awareness reflect her deep engagement with seasonal cycles and the stories they suggest, yielding surprising descriptions: a “thunderstorm / shoulders its way through town / like a lumberjack;” a “solitary woodpecker” becomes “a maestro /of potent nods.” Spend an afternoon reading Harper’s chapbook aloud; it will delight your ears and refresh your perceptions of the natural world.
–Christine Stewart-Nunez, South Dakota State Poet, 2019-2022, Author ofThe Poet & The Architect (2021, Terrapin Books)
Ruth Harper’s poems are filled with keen observations of the natural world and her place in it, noting jet contrails forming cottony patterns (“Sky-blue Quilt”), the cosmos, and an empty street through the eyes of a child (“On Turning 70”). She honors native people and their language, as well as her own family and the past. “Longest Night, Brightest Planets,” is set in the moment, ending with these fine lines: “On this longest night/ of the loneliest year,/ two planets align/ beneath a gleaming crescent moon,/ reminding us/ during bleak pandemic days/ that always/ in this astonishing,/ indifferent universe/ extraordinary beauty awaits/ within the depths of darkness.”
–Twyla M. Hansen, Nebraska State Poet 2013-2018, Author of Feeding the Fire(2022, WSC Press)

Super Long Ranking of HifL Kids that No One Asked For
I don’t like it when dating sims include an epilogue or seasons where the MC and love interest have kids because usually those kids are annoying and I don’t really want to have kids irl. Anyway, I thought it would be fun to go through the Lovestruck routes where the MC does have spawn to rank said spawn from worst to best (according to my correct opinion). Starting with the Havenfall is for Lovers kids because I’ve finished all those routes.
The nice thing about Havenfall is that in most of the routes you don’t have kids. This helps keep the story more open-ended for readers to imagine their own ending and doesn’t alienate players that don’t like kids. Only Razi and Mackenzie fall into the trap of making the player reproduce and in Mackenzie’s case it’s just absolutely insane bananas how you’re even able to have biological children. Werewolves for some reason have an ancient moon ritual that allows lesbians to get pregnant with each other? Like why? What’s wrong with fostering kids or adopting them? Or just using a sperm donor?
The whole werewolf lesbian pregnancy thing felt way too dumb even for a story like this. Also the fact that the main character keeps the same outfit from the main story while she’s pregnant was hilarious to me. I know that they did that to save money and it’s cartoon logic where they’re not actually supposed to be wearing the same clothes every day but I like to believe that nobody bought MC maternity clothes and she actually just kept wearing this one shirt every day.
Tumblr media
5. Twyla is worst child of Havenfall. I’m sorry if you disagree. But a 13 year old werewolf (who also finds out she’s an alpha because of course MC and Mackenzie can’t just have an average or non-werewolf child, oh no, they’ve got to have TRIPLETS and all of them are able to shift and one is a super-rare alpha like Mackenzie because everything just has to be perfect and whoop dee doo).
Twyla is annoying. She’s vegan, but not a cool vegan. She’s one of those that tries to guilt other people for not also being vegan. She’s also just so perfect and effortlessly gifted and that’s annoying. Everybody babies her because she’s a new wolf and she’s so young and blah blah I don’t care. See? This is why I’m not a parent in real life. If I was Twyla’s moms I would tell her to stop being a brat to her siblings and go eat some asparagus until she calms down. Also the second half of Mackenzie’s season 10 is just going after Twyla because she runs away from home because she’s all pissy about her cool new werewolf superpowers. Some of us got acne, periods, and ugly in middle school but Twyla gets to be an alpha werewolf and throws a fit about it. Cry me a river, kid.
Tumblr media
4. WADE. So you know how I mentioned how it’s super ridiculous that the werewolves have a magical lesbian pregnancy ritual? Well it’s even more ridiculous that said ritual was able to produce a child with a Y chromosome when neither of the parents has a Y chromosome. Now, you could assume that maybe Wade is trans or intersex or something, but during Mackenzie’s extra story that features the birth of the triplets MC gives the baby a boy name right out of the gate, and Lovestruck is usually open with a character’s gender identity/sexual orientation if they’re not cisgender or straight, so we’re just left to believe that the werewolf lesbian pregnancy sex magic can also create cisgender males out of thin air apparently.
Tumblr media
Aside from that, Wade is just kind of there. He’s boring. He likes comic books like Mackenzie which is cute, and he has glasses like the MC, but aside from that he’s totally overshadowed by his sisters and seems like a pointless addition to the story. It seems like the only reason they didn’t just let Mac and the MC have twin girls is because another Lovestruck story (Medusa from Astoria: Fate’s Kiss) already featured twin daughters, so they wanted to make this story different.
Also Wade’s werewolf form looks wonky. I think it’s the fact that his lack of human ears is so noticeable with his short hair. It just looks dumb.
Tumblr media
3. ISSA is the least annoying Hunt child. She’s energetic and kind of a loose canon compared to her stuffy sister but that makes her more fun. She’s excited to be a werewolf which would also totally be my reaction to being a werewolf so I’m kind of biased towards her. Plus she’s always telling her sister off (like when Twyla almost kills a rabbit while in werewolf form and she freaks out but Issa is like “bitch, calm down” I was like “yes, Issa, tell her off.” I wish we got to see more of Issa but of course season 10 becomes the Twyla show when she runs away from home so Issa also gets overshadowed like Wade.
Tumblr media
2. Roxie/Rokshana is the best child of Havenfall. She’s laid-back and fun and the story of Razi’s season 8 revolving around her makes more sense story-wise because in the previous season the villain (Baba Yaga) basically dropped a fairy tale curse on MC and Razi by saying that she’s going to come take their first-born child when that child is 16. She’s also a teen but in a less annoying way than Twyla is, like Roxie gets in trouble by staying out of the house and not telling her parents but she doesn’t act as whiny or throw as big of a fit like Twyla does when she’s called out. It’s probably because she’s older but I just found Roxie less annoying than the Hunt kids in general. Maybe due to the way she was written, maybe because she has a cool nose-piercing and is just better designed, idk.
Tumblr media
1. AND THE BEST CHILD OF THE HAVENFALL ROUTES IS: the Hellhound puppies from Diego’s season 10. That’s right. I’m counting them, I believe dog parents are just as valid as parents of human/werewolf or human/djinn kids. DEAL WITH IT. Diego’s route is kind of off to me because the pacing and story just felt dragged out throughout the seasons, and I’m personally not a huge Diego fan in general (Antonio >>>>> Diego and I will die on this hill). Part of that is because most of Diego’s seasons just felt very meandering and like the story just kept pulling things out of its ass to keep going.
So when season 10 just decided to abandon any pretense of being important or having stakes and instead decided to focus on dog shenanigans I was like “this is GREAT”. I would almost count Spike as a Havenfall child but Spike is already an adult and he is his own dog, The citizens of Havenfall actually have to raise the puppies and we get THE GREATEST CG OF ALL TIME because of them.
Tumblr media
RUNNERS UP:
5.5: the unborn Hunt twins. As if having teenage triplets was not enough, in Mackenzie’s route the writer decided to kick me while I was down and make the MC pregnant AGAIN through some more werewolf magic BS (they didn’t even do the lesbian werewolf pregnancy ritual again but somehow MC gets pregnant because of some asspull reason because Mackenzie’s season 10 decided to try to become my idea of a nightmare existence). Thankfully we don’t get to see the results of this pregnancy plotline because the season ends before these two are born.
Mackenzie’s route in general is my second favorite Havenfall route after Antonio’s but her season 10 really went off the rails for me and in my mind I like to pretend her route ends at season 9 after the wedding to MC, because the idea of just reproducing litters of annoying werewolf children forever is the worst thing in the world. I would rather die, man.

March 2022 Roundup & SC Mediafest Roundup
Hey rare/gen fans! It's a two-for-one special in this post, since March's works were a little on the lighter side while the rare/gen writers were busy getting ready for the fest :) We'll start with the non-fest recs, and then the fest roundup will be at the bottom behind the cut!
don’t have many good reasons to leave my room (i did most things to get to you) by @turningtimeinthetardis, Rachel/Twyla, Alexis & Twyla, rated T, 462 words
Summary: Alexis’ new city never sleeps, so she doesn’t, either, and replacing a dream with distractions couldn’t be easier.
Rec [written by doingthemost]: This is an angsty delight! Short and bittersweet, this fic looks at Alexis' adjustment period to New York and the regrets she's collected along the way regarding a certain café waitress. It's a sad, realistic, painful look at how relationships can change with time.
--
[Podfic] I haven't met the new me yet by @n0connections, Jake/Rachel, rated E
Summary: The last time she had sex was the night Patrick left town — she’d gone out and gotten far too drunk and woke up the next morning in a stranger’s bed hating herself. This feels different, more deliberate; she’s pretty sure there are worse ways to kick-start getting over her ex-fiancé than a one night fling with a hot lumberjack-looking guy she’ll never see again.
Rec [written by yourbuttervoicedbeau]: Am I biased because this is a podfic of my fic? Yes. Am I biased because this was a birthday present for me? Also yes. Will I apologise? Absolutely not. It’s a phenomenally crafted podfic and everyone should give it a listen!
--
leave it all behind, and there is happiness by patrickbrewer, Patrick & Rachel (plus discussed David/Patrick), rated G, 1057 words
Summary: It hurts like absolute hell, knowing that she has spent at least a decade loving someone who could never love her back. Knowing that she has spent long, drunken nights alone in her apartment wondering when the hell everything would fall back into place. Knowing that she is going to have to travel home alone and come to terms with the fact that the future she thought she had all figured out is actually never going to come to fruition.
Rec [written by yourbuttervoicedbeau]: I’m a sucker for Rachel, I’m a sucker for post-Barbecue fics, I’m a sucker for this fic specifically. It’s beautifully, carefully written, full of pain and honesty and hope.
--
(podfic) This doesn’t have to be a sad song by @sarahlevys @nervouscupcakeinspace @rhetoricalk @anniemurphys @sunlightsymphony , Stevie & Rachel, rated G, 982 words
Summary: After the barbecue, Stevie and Rachel commiserate together at the Wobbly Elm.
Rec [written by samwhambam]: This fic is a perfect little snippet of a “could have been” conversation between someone’s best friend, and someone’s ex-fiance. It’s just the touch awkward, while being sympathetic, and you know Stevie and Rachel both felt better after it. It’s short and sweet and worth a read.
--------------------------------
And now for the @scmediafest roundup!
As we have in the past, we have included a few honorable mention fics that are predominantly David/Patrick but the rare/gen elements have a decent portion of the side stories or drive the overall plot.
Check them out behind the cut, and help us spread a little rare/gen love!

Hard to believe there’s only two days left! Today brings us, coincidentally, three fics entitled “Merry Christmas[,] Patrick Brewer, along with lots of fluff, snow, Ruthie, and another nice long podfic.
Following along? Don’t forget to copy today’s fics from the master spreadsheet to your own!
*
Puppies, Hockey Sticks, and Knitted Scarves
[David/Patrick - G - 16,107]
Three prompts mashed together to form this fluffy holiday tale. Includes, as the title suggests, puppies, hockeyball, and scarves.
*
Merry Christmas, Patrick Brewer.
[David/Patrick - E - 12,383]
Patrick meets David. I'm fairly sure you know the rest- doesn't mean it's not fun to read over and over again
*
in the woods we return to reason and faith
[Patrick & Stevie, David/Patrick, Stevie/Ruth - T - 4,910]
As a kid, fresh snow meant snowmen in the backyard, snowball fights with his cousins, his mom standing on the porch watching Patrick empty powder out of his hood and shake himself off before she'd let him back in the house.
As an adult, snowfall coinciding with the holiday period means one of Patrick's favorite winter traditions: hikes with Stevie.
*
Merry Christmas, Patrick Brewer
[David/Patrick, Clint/Marcy - G - 3,581]
Pure, lighthearted Christmas fluff with warm fuzzy feelings. Also a moment of Concerned Parenting™ with a soft landing.
*
snowflakes fallin', new york callin'
[Stevie/Ruth - T - 3,252]
It's Ruth and Stevie's first Christmas together. Ruth shows Stevie some of her favorite things about New York City.
*
Even if it's just in your wildest dreams
[Alexis/Twyla, Alexis/Ted - T - 3,061]
Alexis hastily agrees to visit Ted in the Galapagos over New Years and invites Twyla along for the trip. Which only complicates matters. Her nerves, thoughts and feelings might very well drive her nuts.
Or
Alexis stresses about things she actually never had any reason to stress about in the first place.
*
first snow
[David/Patrick - T - 3,014]
"Lie down in the snow.” Patrick demonstrates, flopping over on his back with splayed arms and legs. “Then you just…” he starts moving his arms and legs in aborted motions. The corners of David’s mouth creeps upward at the sheer ridiculousness of his husband’s actions as well as pure excitement accompanying them.
“What are you doing?”
“I’m making a snow angel!”
----
It snows for the first time at the cottage, and Patrick persuades a reluctant David to join him in the snow.
*
Yet To Come
[Stevie/Ruth - G - 2,830]
When Stevie's stranded in New York for Christmas, Ruth offers her a place to stay.
*
Help Wanted
[David/Patrick - T - 2,154]
The holiday season has business booming at Rose Apothecary! Patrick wants to hire some seasonal help, but will David agree?
*
Merry Christmas Patrick Brewer
[David/Patrick - NR - 1,961]
It’s the first Christmas in the store, in the town, away from his family. Patrick opts not to go home, so Marcy and Clint decide to surprise him. A mash up of Merry Christmas Johnny Rose and Meet the Parents.
*
[Podfic] Good Winter
[David/Patrick - M]
Patrick spends a week in January at his parents' fishing cabin, sorting through memories and trying to figure out if enough of his past remains to rebuild relationships with his family and Rachel, while not losing who he's become with David. David, of course, helps.
A story about making peace with all the versions of yourself, inspired by Bon Iver's album For Emma, Forever Ago.
Podfic of Distractivate’s fic “Good Winter.”
*
CREATORS: If your works were released today, please don't forget to update your posting date!
