Art Deep Dive #2: 'Left with Nothing, Somehow She Still Survives'

Left With Nothing, She Still Survives

When I was 29 I was in the middle of my art studio sprinting to get as many pieces done for a charity art show as I could. I was putting on the show to help support the people in Ukraine including a close friend and fellow filmmaker I knew. I wanted to work in a wide range of art for the show to appeal to more people. One of the styles I wanted to work in was nude figure drawing. I think nude figure drawings are a very effective and pretty universal way to communicate emotions and states of mind without using words, as well as being the most effective way to tell a story with images. They are also a fascinating collaboration between two artists: the artist drawing and the artist modeling. Between these two you are expressing a few things: the first being a level of comfort and intimacy between two humans attempting to create something beautiful using only their bodies, the second an emotion, concept, or story as being expressed through the natural human state, and third you are displaying the beauty of the human body in any state of being. Now the next thing I had to do was figure out how to find the beauty in one of the horrific and truly disgusting acts in human history. Easy, right?

At the time I had an art studio at Art on 30th Gallery in San Diego. It was an excellent learning experience and a very easy re-welcoming into the world after such a long time in complete isolation. The gallery offered a Nude Figure Drawing Group that I was lucky enough to be a part of. Knowing this was coming up, I decided to dip into reading articles, watching videos, and talking to a friend living in Ukraine. I can never say this process was fun to experience, but as an artist, I think I still had to find something within the situation that would alter my perspective. Within the alteration of perspective, I can at least find a respect for anything that alters my perspective in any way, good or bad.

Perspective (noun):  A way of thinking about and understanding something (such as a particular issue or life in general).

Perspective has always been an important tool for me when it comes to storytelling. I love being able to get into a character’s heart, soul, and mind because somewhere in between lies their perspective of life, and within that is the answer to who they are. 

After all the research and inspiration recon I had so many questions, so many horrifying images in my mind both real and imagined as a result of the real images (overactive imaginations go both ways). I had to meditate on the subject. I tried to put myself in the shoes of a human trapped in a war zone; as a human only armed with first-world problems and experiences these thoughts began to truly scare me. I pushed past the fear, forcing myself to explore deeper than surface-level fear. I began to drift into the realm of the humans that somehow survived these invasions and whose lives are now dictated by the very thing that has taken so much from them. I began to think about other tragedies throughout history. I began to think about those very few but often very strong humans who managed to survive such monumental atrocities. My thoughts became a little more clear until I reached the question: “When a human is stripped to nothing, how are they able to continue surviving?”

Sleepless nights feeling guilt and wondering if I was doing enough - helping enough - or if I was simply watching naked people struggle. I took these thoughts into the next Figure Drawing Group session.

Our nude figure model Michele Gregoire was perfect for what I wanted to communicate. She was very petite and thin. I could see her ribs and her stomach appeared sunken in. She had a gentle, calm beauty about her. She had a vase with her as a modeling item. Something about this pose struck me. This was it, this was the story I’ve been looking for. The character was there in front of me in this pose, in the expression on her face, in the smaller details of her body allowing her figure to tell this character’s journey. It was truly an honor to work with Michele and she is an amazing model who is not afraid to make bold, beautiful, poses that are perfect for storytelling. I reached for a sort of orange-toned paper. I wanted to give the paper a bit of texture before I drew the figure so I rubbed charcoal all over my hands and simply ran my hands all over the page leaving beautiful, soft streaks of dust and shadows. From there, with graphite, I drew out the pose. I had planned on using charcoal or even oil pastel but the more I continued to sketch and draw the figure out I enjoyed the graphite look. I continued to work with heavier graphite adding shadows and highlights until I was happy. By the time I was finished, I knew the piece didn’t need color or charcoal. It was complete.

After letting the piece rest I went back to it the next day. The title simply floated to me: ‘Left with Nothing, She Still Survives’. I cut a 12 x 24 x 1-inch wood panel where I mounted the drawing to it for display. For me, the title carries the representation of the strength of a human’s will to live. It wasn’t easy trying to find beauty within tragedy but with enough digging and searching inspiration can be found even in the most horrifying of events. This piece, although melancholic, I do believe is beautiful.

SET FOURTEEN - ROUND ONE - MATCH SEVEN

"Reply of the Zaporozhian Cossacks" (1880–1891 - Ilya Repin) / "Garden of Earthly Delights" (1490-1510 - Hieronymus Bosch)

REPLY OF THE ZAPOROZHIAN COSSACKS: Uuuuuuooo I’m pretty sure somebody has submitted the world famous Repin with the fella holding his dead son, and yeah that one is truly harrowing and I think it should be in the final bracket cause it would sweep but Repin has such a range and it’s all very deeply felt and sensitive stuff. For this one he did a couple of versions - you could pick either because they’re both rich in a really immediate sense of humanity. Again on the technical side this is a truly bonkers piece of work because he stitched its elements together from countless studies of people he knew and the result is still somehow a Realist masterpiece rather than the patchwork amalgamation you’d expect.

And each figure isn’t just irresistibly human - he gives all of them so much tangible warmth (the riotous laughter! The attention paid to detail in their clothes! The irritated dog in the bottom left corner) and the fact that theyre all his friends and colleagues is really charming. Dunno if its like “molten lava” kind of evocation of emotion but it certainly makes me feel something. ( @idiotpalespiral )

GARDEN OF EARTHLY DELIGHTS: think it's one of the greatest odes to human imagination and it's insane that it was painted around 1500. it's hard to overstate how innovate and unique bosch's art is. besides, he probably hadn't even ever taken acid in his life, so i don't know how he did that (@cuties-in-codices)

(The "Reply of the Zaporozhian Cossacks" is an oil on canvas painting by Ukranian born Russian artist Ilya Repin. A large number of the "Cossacks" are modelled after either friends of Repin or people he saw around him, including the bald head belonging to the Grand Chamberlain of the court of the Russian Emperor who declined to be added and Repin painted in anyway. This painting measures 203 cm × 358 cm (80 in × 141 in) and is located at the State Russian Museum in Saint Petersburg. The submitter originally submitted the preliminary version of the piece.

"The Garden of Earthly Delights" is a triptych oil painting by Hieronymus Bosch. It measures 205.5 cm × 384.9 cm (81 in × 152 in) and is located in the Museo del Prado, Madrid.)

a recap

So we have this foreign exchange student from back in the 80s who has kept in touch with our family for the last 35 years and my parents stay with him when they go to europe or asia (hes an auto exec who lived there too) and vice versa. This guy also has BiPolar Disorder that he refuses to get medicated. His entire family and friends have parted ways with him over time because he wont get treatment and is probably the most annoying person the planet (in my opinion). His girlfriend is finally over it moved back to Japan. It sounds like his job might be gone too. So he decides to annoy the last people he hasand shows up on our doorstep for xmas. He proceeds to terrorize our family with a 24/7 grunting, screaming, stomping tantrum over the course of a couple weeks. I lock myself in my room and ignore him which pisses him off. He wears really loud beads on his wrists and reeks of cologne. (the house is absolutely ruined with the smell, we need to call some kind of professional cleaner. My mom threw away all the linens) He plays some kind of German Ska music that is truly the worst noise you will ever hear . He spend hours online trying to fuck/marry/kill some ukranian model/whore/catfish. He spends the other hours ordering around 40 pairs of shoes from Amazon. he ordered a bunch of shit from from europe and had it shipped here for who knows what reason. He bought an ugly picture of like a beer bottle at, i think, Powells for like $600 but its so big he has to ship it back and thats gonna cost over $700 in shipping. He ordered something from REI but wanted to return so my dad him directions to the one in clackamas but he ends up in the mall "where his real friends are." Explaining how his new friends make commission off the thousands upon thousands of dollars he is spending on tacky jewelry pisses him off and he moves out of the bedroom he has successfully turned into a Hoarders episode in 10 days and into a motel near his beloved clackamas mall. his flight out of the country was today but whether he got on board and made it is a mystery. we kept trying to be sympathetic and hospitable and nice and charitable and tried to explain he needs help but he is deep in delusion and denial and we are all out of fucks to give. Fuck him

BUCKLE IN BUDDY

Just as a quick aside before I get started: I'm a slut for linen. I've been super into linen clothing for a few years now and I honestly think linen is the best sustainable fabric. THAT BEING SAID. A lot of linen clothing is expensive??? Like stupid expensive. You can find it cheaper on poshmark and other similar sites, but the plus side of ordering through them is that you can customize it (I never have, but the option's there).

Anyway here's the source shops:

The Maybe Collection One of the few linen stores I've found that is manufactured in the states. I recently discovered their stuff and I'm stoked to find a states-side option.

VIKOLINO Another US-made linen company from my home state, Jersayyyy. I love that one of the models is totally their mom. And their kids clothes are cute.

NotPERFECTLINEN For me this brand is the epitome of linen clothing. Gorgeous cuts that manage to skip over frumpy with lots of variety. Lithuanian-made with a focus on sustainability.

Leka Design I unexpectedly discovered this shop while visiting friends in Victoria, BC. Entering their workshop was like being greeted by old friends (insert joke about friendly Canadians) and while not all their clothes are linen, a lot are, and they're beautiful.

Tsiomi Kids Ukranian linen (and cotton) clothes maker that makes really cute kids clothes for your instagram-worthy family photo shoots. Their adult clothing has the same vibes as Sonderflor.

Linen ID Studio Another Lithuanian linen shop with those cottage-core vibes everyone's looking for, but with a more modern flare. I'm lusting after several of their blouses.

FLAX Can't have a linen shop list without FLAX. They're old school, and while I'm not exactly sure if they're considered "slow fashion", they're sustainably sourced and can be a lot more affordable, especially second hand.

There are no nazis or communists in the modern days. Just fascists and fascists painted in red trying to impose their ways unto others. The same fascist who tries to justify their ways and calls you a fancy evil name is the same that is responsible for supporting politics that created a few common graves on ukranian soil with body parts of women and children. Apparently some forms of fascism are worst than the others depending on how you paint them, even though they produce the exact same outcome to innocent lives.

Looking at internet comments it seems being anti logic and anti freedom is the new trend. Some of you are so pathetic and don't even have the physical and mental discipline to survive in the same political utopias you support.

So fuck all of you and your groupies. Atheists they say lol you are all just fruits of christianity, denying all factual reality to justify your weakness. Man the fuck up. At least have some integrity to your flesh vessel and accept the creature that you really are. A jealous organism screaming "me!" and "more!".

If we had to create a metaphor, then look at a +36 year old with vans and a fred durst looking hat at hardcore shows still with a teenage mentality beating younger kids on moshpits and coming with ways to justify it. We get it. The beast inside needs release. It is simply as that.

Let's just admit how rotten we really are and stop pretending we care. We are all the same.

OK!!!! here’s the Final Product of my project :)

i started this painting back in november and got all but 2 blocks done,, and this week i finally got to finish it!

two pictures bc the lighting was slightly different lol

so here’s the detail breakdown:

-from the top of the canvas down the characters are aligned the same way they are in the show (downstage to upstage… and at least circa 2016)

-ocean ofc has her campaign sign. those maple leaves were So!!! hard to paint!!

-constance gets a jawbreaker with a crack in it bc sugar cloud ily

-mischa’s phone for Sure has the most detail. thanks to @moonmoonthecrabking for helping me decide what to put on the screen like a month ago :) fun fact the ukranian at the bottom just says Album Title. and then ofc there’s an unread text from talia bc. look at the time Ouch :)))

-noel gets a dead rose bc He Would Love That !! and he does have a rose in his song so. kinda like that too.

-jane/penny has the hello kitty cupcake! bc that scene slaughters me :))) i really made sure to model it after the Actual cupcake used in the show too. it’s surprisingly close!!

-finally ricky has that Sick galaxy paw print :) i used Literally 4 bottles of glitter glue on it after i painted it.. they were very small bottles of glitter glue though. long live the zolarian prophet yknow.

but yeah!! that’s the whole painting! i’m super super proud of this painting and i am SO happy to finally show it!
