thoughts on veganism? i find it pretty complicated considering how many leftists view the ethical + environmental complications while knowing i will never be vegan bc Eating Disorder.
i mean i don't think those two positions are actually in tension though. like, anybody with serious communist political commitments understands that individual consumption patterns are not the same as a political movement for systemic change—there is value in trying to collectively reduce meat consumption, & for some people a vegan consumption pattern is just the only ethical response to the issues of interspecies justice that animal product consumption raises. but people who are serious about both communism and veganism are not asking you to endanger yourself by following dietary rules that are unsafe for you, nor do they think that the entire animal agriculture industry would collapse if only you as an individual would agree to do so. if food justice is something you care about i think there are much broader conversations and political movements to get involved with here, which ultimately aim to provide all people with sufficient food that is produced in ways that don't cause massive ecological damage or needless animal suffering. a just and sustainable food system will probably never be able to provide people with the amount of meat / dairy that, eg, usamericans are accustomed to eating, and plant foods definitely do need to become more reliably available, affordable, sustainably produced, &c. but like, i'm talking here about massive fundamental changes to the entire system of growing, processing, and distributing food; these are questions of political import that you can absolutely care about & be involved in even if, in present circumstances, eschewing all animal products is not practicable for you.

6 days until Nark Week!!
6 pranks that definitely got pulled in the Narkiverse:
-Nick put salt in Lark's coffee because he was Being Salty (and it broke the tension and they had Open And Honest Communication after) (They totally didn't but we can hope)
-Nick fell asleep all Demonned Out at his desk, and woke up to Lark cooking on his hair. (Lark chewed him out for how unsafe it was, praised the workmanship of the Mostly Undamaged desk chair, and told him that cooking like this will keep expenses down)
-Shower Portal Jumpscare that would've lead to broken bones if Nick weren't a hair faster than Lark
-Young Nick put flowers in Lark's hair while he was sleeping and people thought he was Sparrow. It pulled him out of the existential numbness enough to get mad 💞💞💞
-Lark hid *only* the second disk of the Face/Off Collector's Edition, and Nick couldn't find it for a month. It was nestled in a binder of CDs burned from Mercedes' Radio recordings. Lark forgot he did this, and now Nick knows about the momma's boy binder
-Pre-series, in the Jodie Timeline, Lark and Sparrow egged Nick's House for ACAB reasons, but they're vegan and therefore had no eggs, so they threw eggplants at the house and broke a window. (The eggplant turned into a bland but filling dish, and miraculously there was no glass. Jodie taught Nick to turn Lemons into Lemonade that day)

last night, during the street outreach, we had a woman come up to us, incredibly agitated that the undercover footage we were showing of slaughterhouses and dairy, egg, and fishing industries was visible to children.
two of the activists had brought their healthy, intelligent, wonderfully well-adjusted vegan children, who have both previously seen the footage with their parents and asked questions and received honest answers.
and i approached her to ask her—if she cared so much about the welfare of children, as she claimed, why was she not boycotting these industries?
if you are against child labor in any real way, you WOULD boycott industries that require labor in slaughterhouses, meat-packing facilities, fisheries, egg farms, dairy farms, fur and wool farms.
because guess who makes up a significant portion of that labor? CHILDREN. illegally and legally both, depending on the state or regional laws.
i’ve seen it with my own eyes at slaughterhouses, up close—i’ve seen children no older than 12 made to haul the dead bodies of pigs, still bleeding. i’ve seen them working in those farms.
there are innumerable minors “employed”—or enslaved—to animal agriculture and the resultant slaughterhouses and meat-packing and chick-grinding and animal skinning. PTSD doesn’t even begin to cover what these children come home with. to say nothing of how unsafe these jobs are—would anyone like to look into how many injuries and outright limb amputations are caused by slaughterhouse work each year? cuz it sure isn’t zero.
do you think Big Meat insures their workers and pays for medical bills and a pension when these incidents occur? how much do you think they care about safety code violations? the USDA and ASPCA approved slaughterhouses i’ve seen in person are in violation of at least 40 codes, minimum.
and let’s talk about the field farming of the immense amount of food required to sustain the animals imprisoned within these industries—lest we forget, most of the world’s food and calories go to feed these animals, not us.
and guess who they rely on most to farm that animal feed.
these industries will ALWAYS find a way to use children for their labor, because it’s cheap and it’s easy. they will NEVER stop using child labor. ever. it doesn’t matter how many laws are “in place”—these places will always get away with it bc they literally cannot exist without extensive and wildly cheap labor. you cannot invent an animal agriculture that won’t find a way to silently exploit minors for cheap labor.
these businesses are at the top of the capitalist heap—it’s a business that, once again, cannot exist without human slavery on a large scale, with much of that burden resting on children and immigrants (particularly women, btw).
if you actually care even a little bit about child labor, really, one of the most effective things you can do is to boycott animal product industries.

Vegans lately are using the dangers of raw milk as proof we shouldn't have dairy because it's inherently unsafe for us so therefore that's their logic-
Hm how strange, let me eat some raw romaine lettuce for a moment to consider a rebuttal.

A take on veganism
While veganism can do good on the world, It's current climate is toxic and unhealthy.
There is no act an individual can to that will effect the level of harm that corporations cause
The especially white vegan view of you have to be fully vegan in everything you consume is toxic, unethical, and often in achievable.
Plastic leather (pleather or vegan leather) is horrible for the environment and your wallet. It sheds a ridiculous amount of plastic products into the environment and does not hold up with time causing you to have to buy more and more. This of course causes more plastic in the environment and more expenses to you.
Most leather is used as a byproduct from cows killed for the meat industry meaning these cows would still be killed if you did not consume leather as they are skilled for hamburger etc. and then instead of discarding their skin it is used for a durable environmentally friendly product.
In again, especially white vegans, the bid to not consume any animal products leads to more harm than good in cases.
Foods like quinoa (grain that has amino acids and protein) and agave (common substitute for honey) harm farmers and the countries who rely on them due to vegans driving up global demand.
Many vegans will boycott honey as it is derived from bees, but will still consume almond milk. This is hypocritical as bees are not harmed in the production of honey, buy are harmed in the transportation to and pollinating of almond groves.
The crazy vegan stereotype turns people away from veganism and decreased animal consumption. The over the top, angry, all or nothing type creates hatred towards the vegan community steating people away from it which creates the opposite effect that it is trying to.
Critic of concepts such as meatless Monday hurts everyone. Most people can't or aren't willing to be vegan or vegetarian but concepts such as meatless Mondays allows for less meat to be cooked when it otherwise would be.
The idea that vegan or vegetarian diets are cheaper is false. This is only true if your diet is mainly beans and rice, but that is not how almost everyone eats. Produce, and dairy and meat substitutes are more expensive than animal products. Furthermore in food deserts or countries/areas where vegan/vegetarian lifestyles aren't common it may be next to impossible to not consume animal products due to low availability and high price.
Most vegans and vegetarians will allow for medications that include animal products, but those who don't create an unsafe space for people who rely on them.
Medications is not the only reason to need to consume animal products and this is where the real danger lies. Any condition that causes a restrictive diet poses a risk in restricting more. Yes, veganism and vegetarism are restrictive diets. Some, but definitely not all, are chron's, gerd, ANY ED, needing to tube feed, IBS, colonoscopy bag users, people on a liquid diet, and much more. Talk to your healthcare provider please before attempting vegan or vegetarian lifestyles if you have any of these types of issues. The vegan movement shames people who rely on animal products to stay healthy and that is dangerous.
Racism plays into the vegan movement as well. Many, again, especially white, vegans shame cultures who use animals. Cultures and traditions who care for animals, use all their parts, farm, and take care of their land and animals are much better than traditionally western practices and the need for veganism is no longer needed. The animals and land are cared for and treated respectfully. Veganism would do more harm than good here.
There us a line between ethical and unethical veganism, however the line is blurred. Knowing when it does more harm than good is not often enough talked about and I believe it's important that unethical veganism is talked about more.
Some ways to help promote ethical living besides veganism
Freegan. A freegan is vegan with the exception to animal products that would otherwise be discarded.
Ethical consumption. Buy from local farmers. Start a community garden. Have your own chickens for eggs. Etc.
Trade and barter. This works around capitalism which is a driving factor towards unethical animal practices.
Support indigenous people. They know how to care for the land and the animals. Importantly their rights have been abused and violated and we need to support them as well.
Shop local. This keeps money out of the hands of big corporations. As well as being environmentally friendly due to less co2 emissions.
Reduce reuse recycle. Start by reducing the products use consume. Then reuse what you can as much as you can. Finally recycle everything you can. This is the order that makes the smallest imprint.
Pescitarian. The only meat pescitarians consume is fish.
Vegetarian. Vegetarians consume animal products but not animals. This can include eggs, but not chickens, milk, but not cow, honey, silk etc. Lakto-vegitarians consume dairy but not eggs and ovo-vegitarians consume eggs but not dairy.
Cutting out any type of meat or animal products.
Only consuming foods that are ethically produced in regards to the environment, animals, and/or humans
Feel free to add more
Remember your health comes first, there is no ethical consumption under capitalism, any change is better than no change.
TL;DR Veganism has problems and isn't the end all be all of ethicality. Reduce consumption in general in the ways you can. Remember your health comes first.

People I don't like and the reasons why.
- Minors on adult spaces that make themselves unsafe by willingly entering adult spaces and then blaming adults for discussing adult subjects in those spaces.
- Parents of minors that don't monitor the internet experience if their child properly and get mad at the internet and at other adults for creating adult spaces instead of being mad at themselves for not protecting the children they are responsible for properly.
- Radfems. I believe in equality and real feminism. Not in inequality, reverse sexism, transphobia, shaming people that are comfortable with their femininity because "it's bowing to patriarchy", porn haters, slut shaming other women, child haters, man haters and all the things Radical Feminism stands for.
- People that turn everything into a talk about Palestinians. Shaming people for still having a life when you "feel guilty for just having water" isn't helping anyone. I still help the news spread, I still boycott the brands that support Israel, I still give amounts of money I can afford to give to organizations and people that are trying to raise money for Gaza. Just because I don't post about it all the time and victimize myself online doesn't mean I have forgotten or that I don't care. I can still have a life and support Palestine, it doesn't have to be my whole personality.
- Flat earthers. You're just too stupid to understand physics.
- Vegans that force their naturally carnivore pets to also be vegan because "it feels so wrong to love one animal and eat the other". If you don't like your pet to eat meat or meat based products, get an animal that is a leaf-eater like you, don't torture the poor dog.
- Vegans that walk up to you while you eat a burger and try to talk harass you out of it.
- "Seperate the art from the artist" people. You can't! If your favourite artist is a bad person *cough cough* like Kanye West *cough cough*, you can't listen to their music without supporting them, giving them money, and allowed all the bad things they've done to go answered. You either have to stop listening to their music, or admit to yourself that you're selfish enough to help a bad person continue being a bad person for a couple of songs. You can only "seperate the art from the artist" if the artist is dead, because only then you can enjoy the art without giving money to a bad person.
- People that say "it's freedom of speech" when it's not and then proceed to throw slurs around.
- People that are haters of artists and when you ask them why they say "because I don't like their music" + [incert 584370 incorrect facts the media and other haters pulled out if their asses and can easily be debunked if you put the slightest bit of effort]. Like, no. There's literally nothing wrong with that person and "I don't like their music" is a valid reason to not be a fan, but you don't have to be a hater instead, you can just be indifferent if you don't like their music.
- People that wear shoes inside a house they don't clean.
- People that steal your good without asking when they aren't your siblings. My sister gets a free pass, but you don't. If you want a fry, you'll ask for it and I'll just say yes, because it's just a fry, you don't have to be annoying and steal it.
- People that say "ADHD is not real" or "Aren't we all a bit ADHD?". No, we're not. ADHD is perfectly real and it causes issues with productivity and concentration that you could never imagine, don't use it as an excuse for your laziness and then say "don't we all have done ADHD?". There's medication for it, because it is 100% real, so don't disregard it or say it's not real, it's just getting annoying.
- People that make jokes about autism, mental health problems, SA, sexism, ect and all it "dark humor" but get upset when you crack some dark humor jokes about men or the church.
- Neurotypical people that give the most basic, overhead "advice" ever to neurodivergent people and then think they know better when someone neurodivergent says "I actually have already tried this, and it's not really working for me".
- People that don't believe in the seperation of religion and state. The laws are for everyone not just you, and "everyone" includes people with different religious beliefs and therefore the laws should not be based around your religion.
- People that are Anti-choice. If you don't want to have an abortion, don't. That's good for you. Congratulations. I hope your baby is born healthy and grown up to live a long life and be the smartest, healthiest, happiest, prettiest person ever and I hope they achieve all their dreams. But just because you didn't want to have an abortion doesn't mean you get to tell others what to do. You go and focus on raising your wonderful child and leave me the fuck alone.
- Homophobic and Transphobic people. Because I have normal human decency.
- Racist people. Because I have normal human decency.
- Sexist people. Because I have normal human decency.
- People that chew with their mouth open.
- People that are "Lesbian Truthers" when it comes to a female character that isn't canonically a lesbian and has shown attraction to men in the past and headcannon them as lesbian and then call homophobic whoever disagrees. I'm looking at you Lesbian Azula Truthers.
- People that are "Lesbian Truthers" when it comes to AN ACTUAL HUMAL PERSON that has shown attraction to men MULTIPLE TIMES, FOR YEARS AND YEARS and have the fucking nerve to "headcannon" them as lesbians AS IF THEY AREN'T ACTUAL HUMSN BEINGS AND NOT CHARACTERS, and then call you homophobic when you say "hey hadn't this person dated multiple men openly? And I actually remember them saying they don't like you be all up their business and guessing their sexuality." I am looking at you Gaylors (aka Taylor Swift Lesbian Truthers). K!ll yourself Gaylors. Please.
- People that blame the child for being abused.
- People that get big dogs and stuff them into little apartments and don't exercise them properly on a daily basis.
- People that get bird and stuff them into tiny cages all day long for all their lives.
- People that are prejudiced again certain dog breeds when it's proven that there's no bad breed, just but owners.
- People that are haters just to troll.
- People that say "I'm not done talking yet". Honey, if you wanted to give a speech you should have told me so that I wouldn't show up. This is a conversation.
- Teachers that don't like kids. Why tf would you get this job then? And why do you have to torture the kids now?

Back on the saga of the militant vegan teacher with the misinformation--somehow it gets worse. After saying that "Animal foods are not essential to human health" and "we can get all our protein from plants", my professor has asked us what our opinion would be if we tried a) a plant-based diet, b) an unprocessed food diet, or c) both diets as a class for a day. In other words, she wants to make it an assignment but is gauging based off of what we want to do.
My disability means I have safe and unsafe foods, and the unsafe foods make me sick. I have a select few things I can eat for breakfast or else I'll feel sick, and I can't have super sweet foods for several hours after waking up because it makes me ill. On top of that, I tried both diets in the past--it did not go well and I'm lucky I didn't get seriously hurt. I can't even fast before blood draws on my own doctor's orders.
Anyways, I screenshotted the stuff I'm worried about and have it saved to my phone for when I bring the stuff to the administration, told everyone the reasoning behind why I could not do either diet (I just said dietary restrictions and a lack of a service dog to warn me if I pass out), and then went "Hey! Here's two other things I could do, including bake an entire loaf of this vegan pumpkin bread I found online, because I can do that!" and added it to my answer so everyone can see.
The worst part is that I'm doing medical testing stuff for that same disability, so if she says no to my suggestions then I may just have to take the bad grade.
I'll keep my fingers crossed that she'll accept your request instead of punishing you for things completely outside your control!

The Fellowship at the Supermarket:
Gandalf:
if it’s not on the list we aren’t getting it
lives for special offers
“oh wait i forgot eggs, stay here while i get the eggs” and then is gone for twenty minutes
trusts only himself to push the trolley because last time he let someone else push it they had to go to A and E
Will disappear at random times because he got distracted
Aragorn:
would rather forrage and hunt for food
wants to buy a whole chicken just because
treats the shop like a maze that must be conquered
figures out the best route around
Arwen gave him a list of stuff he needs to buy
Boromir:
points out all the special offers for Gandalf
secretly buys snacks for the hobbits
wants to push the hobbits about in the trolley because Dad Mode but he has been told it is “unsafe” by Gandalf
loves the self checkout but always need help finding the barcode
Legolas:
is tall so he can reach the high shelves
tries to get Gandalf to secretly buy the vegan options just to annoy Gimli when he finds out
is upset when he gets ID’d when he tries to buy alcohol and even more upset when they don’t accept that he is a couple thousand years old
gotta get a couple things for Thranduil (who hates the supermarket with a passion)
Gimli:
will fight over which is a better bargain
is wary about the self scanner because “it’s being stupid on purpose”
will buy something weird from the middle aisles like a BBQ set or a beanbag chair because “it’s such a good bargain”
gets Legolas to reach things he can’t
will fight an old lady to get the last of the half-price salmon
Frodo:
Takes a book because he knows it’s gonna be a long trip
Hates how many people are in the shop (not a fan of crowds)
Would rather go though self-scanning because ugh last time Bilbo left him at the cashier while he went to grab some more bread and Frodo wanted to die it was so awkward
enjoys how heated the debate gets over what brand of toothpaste is better for value
Sam:
gets hungry just being in the shop
Has a list from Rosie but he’d rather go couples shopping with her as he finds it a romantic thing to do
buys some chocolate and flowers for her as a random present
helps Frodo stay calm around crowds because he knows how bad he hates them
Merry:
tries to sneak things into the cart, including hiding Pippin under a big loaf of bread
Asks Boromir to buy him things and who could resist that smile?
Was the reason they went to A and E because he ran over the rest of the hobbits with the trolley (by accident of course)
Filmed Gimli fighting that old lady for a tiktok
Pippin:
Keeps bumping into people because he's so distracted
Gandalf trusted him with the list once. Once and never again.
Gets lost and Boromir panics whilst trying to find him
No concept of a budget so tries to sneak the best products into the trolley
The dictionary definition of impulse buying

People who claim that buying junk food is cheaper than cooking something at home are so disingenuous.
Like, in this economy? With these inflation rates? Are you sure? What are y'all eating on a daily basis? Caviar and shrimps?
Do you have some eggs? They don't have to be fresh, just not older than 4-5 weeks. You can easily check if they're spoiled by placing them in water. If they float, they're unsafe to eat.
Do you have some stale bread and salt on hand? Good. The simplest version of French toast is very easy to make. You really don't need milk, vanilla, cinnamon and butter/oil for it to be fluffy and delicious. And you can freeze a big-batch of it for up to three months.
What about simple vegan dishes?
You can't go wrong with red lentil soup: oil, an onion, tomato paste, a diced carrot if you have it, salt, (optional) some pepper and cilantro. You don't need it to be extravagant.
Another option? A potato salad. Cut some potatoes into chunks, boil them, then mix them with olive oil, vinegar or lemon juice, diced peppers, onions or scallions and (optional) some chopped parsley. Mayo is not really necessary.
And the list goes on and on and on.
