#vish fossil

This is Part 2 on a series of the speculative biology of Galar's fossils. Keep in mind that due to the incomplete nature of the fossil, the discussion here is primarily speculative.
Vish is revived from the fossilized Fish. It was likely a Water type. The fossil record has provided a near complete reconstruction of its head, but not much is known of its lower half.
Vish was a pisciform Pokemon that lived around 350-380 million years ago in ancient oceans. A lack of a lower body fossil has put much of its biology into speculation. What is known, from the size of its head, is that Vish was very large compared to most modern pisciform Pokemon. A comparable Pokemon would be anywhere between the size of Sharpedo and its mega form.
Vish has an incredibly powerful jaw. It likely used this to crack the shells on other aquatic Pokemon. It likely lived around the same time as Omanyte and Omastar, and its jaw was likely used to eat these Pokemon. Debates over its speed are a common topic in Pokemon paleontology. Because little is known of its lower body, it is unknown whether it hunted faster Pokemon or relied on slower shelled Pokemon entirely.
It is likely an ancestor of Relicanth. While Relicanth is a very old Pokemon, fossils of Vish predate it by 2-3 million years.

Dunno if I've posted this here before, but back when the 'Shrunk Dunk' paper came out last year I made this silly little concept for a full vish. It doesn't really innovate much but I really like Dracovish, not much to improve on really.

My interpretations of the full fossils forms from Galar! I understand the whole mixed fossil thing they were going for, but I still think it’s a damn shame we never got to see the whole specimens ):

Greetings, Professor!
I'm a professional Pokémon rehabilitator in the Lakes Region of Unova (West of the New Galar seaboard), and I've recently had a... SPECIAL... case come into my care.
I assume you are familiar with one Cara Lyss? Unovan customs arrested her for attempting to smuggle Dunklip fossils out of the region, in addition to several Dunklip and what she referred to as a "Dracovish", which was clearly a chimera of a Terrivish and some other, unidentified Pokémon.
I can handle the Dunklip just fine, since I helped with the reintroduction effort, but I honestly don't know what to do with the Big Guy. Frankly, he scares me, because I don't think he has a functional digestive tract, and I'm debating humane euthanasia unless I can get an expert second opinion. If I recall, she tried pulling this kind of stunt in Galar as well, so I assume you've got some know-how on how to care for this guy?
(OOC: Dunklip/Terrivish are the "ImpliedMon" that the Vish portion of the Galar fossils come from. Technically borrowing them from the Ohayo fan-region by Little-Noko on DA.)
of course she's at it again that woman I swear-
First off, let me say that I am so sorry you are having to deal with the results of Cara Liss' experimentation!
Unfortunately enough, I am indeed very familiar with her- well, I hesitate to call it 'work'. She was able to perpetrate it for a frankly rather embarrassing length of time here before authorities caught up with her sufficiently that she was forced to stop her production, and as you can tell she wasn't caught and is clearly still trying to get up to her old tricks!
That said! My philosophy has always been that no matter the circumstances of their creation, these creatures are here with us now and it is therefore our responsibility to help them live the best lives they can live!
I am very glad to hear that the living Dunklip are in good and experienced hands, as I've not yet had the privilege of working personally with that species- though naturally I've followed the research with interest. I can, however, absolutely help you with the Dracovish!
Of the four known chimeras created by Liss, Dracovish is perhaps the one that can require the most complex care. This is due to the fact that, as you have already noticed, its body is, well, not a body. Examinations have confirmed that it is fundamentally created out of exactly what it looks like- a tail!
However!
All is not lost! It is a fact that the created embryo would not have been viable for long, let alone matured into a creature capable of living independently even for a short amount of time, if it was fully missing something as vital as a digestive tract! We are still not sure how she managed it, but something about Liss' process means that the tissue that would ordinarily develop simply into tail muscle is forced to develop instead into essentially a pseudo-torso cavity, complete with organs essential to life, including a digestive system! I fully understand how it could appear that it was missing, however, as the process does not appear to be perfect- as you might expect- and often the organs are somewhat undeveloped or strangely developed! This is the key to finding out how to give your Dracovish the best care!
Some Dracovish appear perfectly capable of eating comfortably and freely right off the bat, but it is not at all uncommon for them to struggle, and from your question I would guess yours is showing significant discomfort or refusing to eat at all. If this is the case, you will have to prioritise medical scans to find out if the problem is with the physical arrangement of the digestive tract or if it is problems with nutrient absorption or sensitivities to certain substances- perhaps unsurprisingly, all four chimera fossils are prone as a group to autoimmune problems! While you are determining this, the top priority is obviously finding something that your new friend can digest. Dracovish are obligate flesh-eaters who can eat land-based meat but- with a few individual exceptions, because a lot about these creatures is individual!- do best on a primarily piscivore diet, and a very light seafood broth supplemented as needed with dietary supplements has been a successful stopgap food in almost all cases I've worked with. Once you have a better idea of your individual Dracovish's personal digestive issues, then you can get started on developing a meal plan that is tailored to them. A food designed for the Dunklip line is likely an ideal starting point, although unfortunately unlikely to end up a complete solution by itself.
Depending on how old your Dracovish is or if it has gone a long time without being able to comfortably eat, you may have to re-acclimatise it to the very concept of food at all! You may find that they are much more comfortable eating underwater at least at first; despite their lack of, shall we say swimming equipment, their heads and therefore their brains are of the Dunklip line, which is obviously a marine species (do watch, however, to make sure they aren't choking or swallowing an undue amount of water that they may not be able to get rid of with their non-marine lower half)! If the Dracovish does not yet trust you to feed it and continues to refuse to eat or becomes aggressive if you approach with food, it is far safer to anaethetise it for tube feeding rather than try to get up close and personal, as their bite is extremely powerful. It is very important, however, that you keep them under extremely close observation for potential reactions to the anaesthetic. I can give more details on reacclimation if you need!
I wish you the best of luck with your acquisition! I adore working with these creatures, they are so individual that they are a constant source of new discoveries! If necessary, we have some Dracovish living here at the Sanctuary as permanent residents, and could easily add another! We have also had what some people find a surprising amount of luck adopting them out to vetted, responsible trainers!
As a final note: please don't feel bad if despite all your efforts, the end result has to be euthanasia. While I will never encourage this as a first resort, as it is often perfectly possible for them to live fulfilling lives, sometimes it is unfortunately the case that the problems are, or will become, too severe to support life in the long term. This is not your fault, and it is better to do it before the suffering becomes extreme if possible! ((OOC: that artist has some amazing designs! Go check 'em out here!
Also, important note: I am not a vet, doctor or even a biologist and this should not be taken as advice for real living animals or humans or indeed anything up to and including pet rocks))

Paradox Pokémon concepts.
Past:
Raging Jaws (Water/Steel Basculegion) - Dunkleosteus, based more on modern reconstructions than the more common "shrinkwrapped" depiction that the "-Vish" fossils from Sw/Sh were based on.
Majestic Leviathan (Water/Dragon Drampa) - resembles a sea-serpent, and has a more fearsome design.
Spiral Shelter (Dark/Rock Inkay) - based on Diplomoceras, with an extremely long and twisting shell.
Raging Fists (Fighting/Fire standard!Darmanitan) - face is longer and more dinosaur-like, and it has reptilian scutes down its back.
Steel Shell (Bug/Steel Golisopod) - covered in spines, with a thicker-looking shell and a two-pronged tail; based on Ceratarges.
Future:
Iron Tomb (Ghost/Ice Cofagrigus) - a futuristic cryo-pod, with frayed cables for arms.
Iron Saucer (Fire/Flying Turtonator) - themed around flying saucers, as well as other types of retrofuturistic spaceship.
Iron Watcher (Psychic/Steel Sigilyph) - head resembles a security camera.
Iron Drone (Psychic/Flying Zen!Darmanitan) - has a pair of hover-thrusters instead of hands, and its legs are a pair of folded-in robotic claws.
Iron Claws (Bug/Dark Golisopod) - has a "police robot" thing going on, with red and blue lights on its back and radio-antennae instead of its "horns".

For starters, since the beginning, fossils could be revived with just one part of their fossilized bodies, so why do we have to combine them for a Pokémon here??
Secondly, Why did you have to torture them, dumb Cara Liss?! Freaking head was on BACKWARDS you dingdong!! Also Arctovish was technically my choice today considering the two Pokémon I drew
And of course I learnt recently that their names aren't even creative! Thet just took Arcto, Drago, Volt, and Vish and put them together in 4 different ways >H<
Now... On to the boos I drew~ I have definitely seen lots of drawings by other artists for the Galarian fossil Pokémon, but I did lots of research into them to be sure I don't copy anyone and so mine can stand out a bit. Then I thought of dinos that aren't usually used for these four parts. The "Arcto" one on the bottom is based on an Ichthyosaurus, and the "Vish" one on the top is based on a Dunkleosteus, but mostly a Mosasaurus. It's somewhere in the middle
I had fun with these~ And I'll be doing the other two ideas for "Drago" and "Zolt" on a future prompt~

So, despite my distaste for Ms. Liss's work, I have decided to work with her. We will be working to stabilize the halves of fossils that she has found in order to try to discover the true behaviors of Draco, Vish, Zolt, and Arcto.
The first two we shall be focusing on will be Vish and Zolt, since finding halve companions for them is relatively easy.
Vish shall be spliced with Relicanth to make Relivish. This hybrid will be studied to find differences in behavior from it and Relicanth, marking said differences down as the result of Vish.
Zolt will be combined with Archeops. This hybrid will be studied to find differences in behavior from it and Archeops, marking said differences down as the result of Zolt.

Hey Harper, did you see the photo of the fossil on my blog? Does it look authentic? Have any advice on it?
From what I have seen, yes it does! Also, congratulations on your discovery!
Advice? Be prepared for collectors and museums to want to buy the fossil from you to display. If that happens to be the route you want to go definitely get a lawyer so you aren’t getting scammed in any way. But otherwise make sure you invest in some form of security with it, I’m sure Lenora can help you with that.

Shout out to that time I drew reconstructed versions of the Galar fossil 'mons. These were made a few months ago. I was indecisive on what to do with arcto's design so I ended up making two.

Couldn't that photo of the fossil be 'shopped?
To what end exactly, mate? To piss scientists off?
In all seriousness, if you think it's a fake picture, I really dont know what to tell you other than think about what your saying. I really dont think they would have let the fossil on the news of there was that much reasonable doubt. I know nothing about fossils, but I've seen the skeletons of enough pokemon to know that the damn thing makes sense according to what we know of Vish. At least wait until we have 100% confirmation before you start throwing accusations around.
And no disrespect to Professor Turner but you've seen his Vish drawing, that level of realism is clearly not his artistic forte.

so, reposting this bc i realised reblogs dont seem to appear on searches on tumblr lmfao
lighthearted rant abt why the galarian fossil pokemon shouldnt be alive!!/pos
ill go in dex order, dracozolt-arctozolt-dracovish-arctovish
dracozolt!! the combination of the bird and drake fossils, by far the LEAST fucked up of the galarian fossils, but it still has some clear issues to point out
Tumblr media
after analyzing the living halves AND the fossils/descriptions you can pretty easily figure out what all 4 of the halves are roughly based after, the draco half causes some confusion but after the dex states that dracozolt is herbivorous, and the front half zolt clearly being a species of small feathered dromaeosaurid like raptors (possibly something like microraptor or archeaopteryx due to the bird fossils description stating it could fly, which no dromaeosaurs did but some were thought to glide!!) and those basically all being carnivorous, we can figure out draco is the herbivorous half, leading me to believe its some type of stegosaurid now, with a front half thats carnivorous and a back half thats herbivorous thats GOT to cause some issues, not getting proper nutrition, not having proper ways to digest certain things one half needs, etc, if we go with what the dex says (which the dex is CLEARLY not very reliable for these pokemon but lets just use it here) that its herbivorous the zolt half could be receiving malnutrition and having trouble eating the correct food the center of balance!
its probably thrown off by the obvious size difference and the fact that stegosaurids are quadrapeds, while dracozolt is a biped. if it falls over its pretty fucked but thats pretty normal for large theropods tbh
there could be some issues with body temperature, but im not sure, smaller things get colder faster and bigger things get hotter faster
thats all i have to say for dracozolt!!
Arctozolt
Tumblr media
arctozolt is the combination of the dino and bird fossils and was my first galar fossil! theyve got some VERY clear issues and a few less clear ones to address, but they are Definitely not enjoying coming back from the dead 💖
first, what IS the arcto half? judging by what we can see i think its most likely to be a type of plesiosaur, it could also be some other aquatic reptiles like ichthyosaurs but i think plesiosaurs are more likely
arctozolt is. cold. duh, the freezing half of an ice type plesiosaur and a small dromeasaur is probably leaving lil zolt pretty chilly and uncomfortable, please give them a scarf
if you take a look back at dracozolt and compare to arctozolt, youll notice the upper torso and most of the arms are inside arctos? blubber? scales? one of those two! not only does this leave the hands nearly useless it also means that if the bones, muscle, flesh, etc, are still present it could definitely cause some health issues, including messing with organs
arctozolt is CLEARLY not supposed to be walking, a terrestrial animal was combined with an aquatic one to result in uh. broken flippers probably, aquatic animals can get VERY heavy and the flippers were clearly never designed to handle that weight, its likely highly uncomfortable to walk on them and probably causes many injuries including broken bones
Dracovish
oh FUCKING boy/lh the combination of the drake and fish fossils dracovish is a NIGHTMARE of a pokemon, a head on a tail, an aquatic creature combined with a terrestrial one, a carnivore combined with an herbivore, this is my least favorite galar fossil
Tumblr media
firstly, whats the vish half? this is the only galarian fossil you can get an exact genus for, vish is almost certainly based of dunkleosteus, a prehistoric fish that had one FUCK of a jaw!
now, as stated above the picture dracovish has the same conflicting diet issue dracozolt has, draco being an herbivore and vish most likely being a carnivore like dunkleosteus, i wont go into too much detail because i already did with dracozolt
center of balance comes up once again, i dont think i need to elaborate much but with how it just. Is. theres no way this guy walks very straight, its also fucked if it falls just like dracozolt
dracovishs head is attached to its tail, that parts obvious, but this is CERTAINLY ***HIGHLY*** uncomfortable, stegosaurid tails should NOT be bent like that as well as just the effort it most likely takes to keep it up, also its head is upside down if it actually puts its tail back down, ALSO the spiky plates on dracos tail could very well harm itself if it gets too unlucky so.
dracovish has no throat unless cara liss decided to ACTUALLY put effort into these frankensteins monsters and put a throat in the tail theres no way it can uh. really do anything, eat, breathe air, drink water, yea
speaking of breathing!! does it? have lungs? the front half of draco being cut off could make it so theres no lungs, and vish most likely doesnt even have gills and if it DID have FUNCTIONING gills thatd bring up a whole NEW issue about how this thing CANT swim, no buts it just Cant
SPEAKING of it not having specific organs, does it have a HEART??? does it???? does it???????
theres so much about dracovish i probably forgot something/srs anyways!
Arctovish
arctovish is the combination of the dino and fish fossils, and the last one of the galarian fossils!!!!!
Tumblr media
arctovish is probably the normalest LOOKING of the galarian fossils, until you realise its. head is on upside down, the pokedex, although unreliable for these pokemon i have a reason to believe what it says here, states this:
Tumblr media
it has "trouble eating its prey" and "breathing difficulties" caused by its flipped head
it could have issues similar to arctozolt because of the freezing ice type arcto, but i feel itd be better than arctozolts issues
so uhhh thats it! thats my whole ass essay on why the galarian fossils are in constant pain/cant Live!
i spent an hour of my life on this, please reblog it/lh

Bruh I NEED a future pokémon game to have the actual complete draco-, arcto-, -zolt, and -vish mons cuz I WANNA SEE EM!!!!! I love dracozolt, arctozolt, dracovish, and arctovish for the fact that they’re meant to look messed up cuz they’re fossils that were wrongly combined, based on the ridiculous and hilarious bone wars that happened irl. But it’d be even better to see these four guys as how they’re meant to be, y’know? Game Freak better deliver someday, it’s what these guys deserve 😤. But for now, I’ll enjoy the fan interpretations

What made the professor want to recreate Arctozolt specifically? Do they plan on recreating the other Galarian fossils as well?
Oh, The Professor had no hand in their initial creation at all. They were produced by one of Macro Cosmos' subsidiary companies, as healthy replacements for the now rapidly declining population distributed by Liss. The Professor's job - and by extension, our job - is to track their health and behavior, and to report the data back to MC before they go forward with mass production. They're "test runs," if you will.
In fact, they already have created the others, we simply got the Arctozolt by chance.
We're not the only lab to receive the new Fossils. I believe the Wedgehurst facility recieved a few 'vish, of both types. MC has kept the majority to themselves for their observations, but small groups were gifted to other facilities: battling unions, ranches, and all of the official labs scattered across the region.
