I didn't think it could retrain my brain as it was full of anxiety and depression. At first, it was a tough battle. Then slowly it became a struggle. Eventually, I started to look forward to it. 20 minutes a day to myself and peace. The process isn't easy but once you get there, you will suddenly realize that you are being mindful. You are being present. You are able to let obtrusive thoughts enter and go without obsessing over them. You will find you are less mentally worn out at the end of the day. The entire process DOES retrain your brain, but it does take time. It took me about a year before I really noticed the difference. 3 years later, I may not be perfect but I do understand how to get my mind back on track and to keep unwanted thoughts from controlling my mind. This past weekend I took my youngest daughter to the local Art Museum. We enjoy going because they usually have interactive mini art projects for us to do together. The new mini projects were once again, really cool, allowed us to talk about things and just spend some Father / Daughter time together. Tonight, I was able to teach her something about my healing. I spoke to her about the Warrior Meditation ™ that was taught to me by @save_a_warrior_saw. I then taught her the process and we meditated together for 20 minutes. Afterwords, we talked about how it can help her when she is frustrated with school work and how stopping to take three deep breaths can set her on a path to success. 60 days in a row of meditation! This is at least one, sometimes two, 20 minute sessions. After attending @save_a_warrior_saw I found that meditation can help me refocus my mind in ways other therapy couldn't. I am not suggesting it be the sole choice of therapy for PTSD, but rather to add it to your mental tool box. What makes it work for me is that during the Warrior Meditation ™, I focus on allowing my thoughts to pass rather than become intrusive. This process translates to helping me focus on controlling emotions and thoughts throughout the day, something I have been needing desperately.
