As soon as Danny enters his apartment, face bright red, he takes his head into his hands and lets out a silent scream.
He could have said anything, and he panicked and went with Toodealoo Kangaroo???
At this rate, he’ll never get a partner.
As Danny stands there in misery, his phone starts buzzing with messages. Curious, he checks his phone to see what going on.
Uh oh.

Team Phantom 👻😎
Chaos: Guys check this out
Chaos: *link*
Chaos: The Joker escaped from Arkham again, but no one’s heard anything of him since, nor have they been able to find him
TooFine: @Daniel 👀
TooFine: ok the @ had been a joke but the fact that he has read it and not replied is concerning
Sharpshooter: @Daniel, what did you do?
Sharpshooter: @Daniel
Sharpshooter: I can see that you’re reading this, don’t ignore me.
TooFine: ohhhh someones in troubleee 👀
Sharpshooter: Tucker.
TooFine: 🤐

Danny takes a deep breath.
Well, it’s now or never. Let’s hope Jazz is feeling merciful.

Private chat
Bill: ok so you know how you said you would still love me if I was a worm?
Pants: I have no clue how this ties into the previous conversation, but yes. Why?
Bill: hypothetically
Bill: would you also still love me if I
Bill: hypothetically
Bill: accidentally
Bill: vibe checked someone that tried to uh
Bill: hypothetically
Bill: kidnap and or kill me??
Bill: 🥺🥺🙏
Pants: Danny, did you accidentally kill the Joker?
Bill: yes or no Jazz??!? 😩🥺
Pants: Yes, Danny. I would still love you if you, hypothetically, accidentally killed the Joker.
Bill: this is why you’re my favorite sister 🥹🥰😘
Bill: don’t tell Ellie 😳🫣
Pants: Danny, what happened?
---
Danny lets out a sigh of relief before proceeding to tell Jazz what happened.
---
Pants: Oh Danny.
Bill: are you mad at me?
Pants: I’m not mad at you, I just want you to stay safe.
Pants: While I don’t condone murder, I understand that it was self-defense and an accident. I‘m just glad that you’re alright.
Bill: 🥰💞😘

With a small smile on his face, Danny goes back to the groupchat.

Team Phantom 👻😎
Daniel: you know
Daniel: if I had a nickel for every time I’ve had to fight off an insane clown that attacked me 🤡
Daniel: I’d have two nickels
Daniel: which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it’s happened twice, right? 🤔
Chaos: Damnit Danny, we leave you alone in a new city for a week and you already manage to get into a fight with one of Gotham City’s most infamous rogues
TooFine: actually its been 6 days 10 hours and 17 minutes
TooFine: so not even a full week yet
Chaos: Did you at least get a good few punches in?
Chaos: Danny?
TooFine: @Daniel ???
TooFine: if i had a nickel for every time danny said something concerning and then didnt provide context id be richer than vlad
Daniel: anyway, for completely unrelated reasons, @TooFine I need you to wipe some cams for me 😃
TooFine: danny im not wiping the cams again so no one will have proof of you tripping backward and falling ass-first into a trashcan
Chaos: Speaking of, Tucker do you still have that footage and can you send it to me?
TooFine: already done
Daniel: noo it’s nothing like that this time 😫
Daniel: pleaseeee 🥺🙏🙏
Daniel: I’ll get you an autograph from Tim Drake-Wayne?
TooFine: deal.
Daniel: 🥳🎉
Daniel: ok so the footage from somewhere around 3 am last night
Daniel: around some place named park row??
Daniel: I think it’s called?? 🤔
Daniel: though I’m pretty sure I’ve also heard some people refer to it as crime alley
Daniel: not sure why tho 🤷
TooTine: aye aye captain o7
Chaos: Danny, in an alley getting attacked by the fucking Joker: I wonder why this place is called crime alley
Daniel: stop bullying me 😠
Chaos: No
TooFine: hey danny r u sure thats right? i checked the cams n stuff but theres no available footage from the area n time u described
TooFine: its like someones already wiped it all
Daniel: oh!
Daniel: that’s so sweet of him 😊
Chaos: Wait who is this ‘him’?
TooFine: the joker????
Daniel: oh no not the Joker
Daniel: just some cute guy I met last night
Daniel: he witnessed me killing the Joker 🫣
Daniel: and didn’t call the cops on me afterward 🥰💞
TooFine: def green flag
Chaos: Oh hell yeah, he’s a keeper
Chaos: Wait you killed the Joker?! I thought you just fought him off!
Daniel: it was an accident!! 😭😭
Daniel: he crept up on me and tried to grab me 😓
Daniel: so I got startled and because all I saw was a clown
Daniel: I just kinda punched his face in with my ghost strength… 😰
TooFine: f
Chaos: f
Sharpshooter: Have you gotten rid of the body yet? Did you leave behind DNA at the crime scene? Will I need to start saving up bail money or getting ready to enact the Fenton Break Out plan?
Chaos: Jazz asking the important questions here
Daniel: well, considering the footage was wiped
Daniel: and also the fact that no one’s found him yet
Daniel: I think it’s safe to assume it’s all taken care of
Daniel: that’s honestly really sweet of him though 🥰😊
TooFine: oohhhhh ur mystery boo??
Daniel: yeah, this random guy saw me vibe-checking the Joker
Daniel: and let me go home without any trouble
Daniel: pretty sure he’s the one who wiped the cams 🤔
Daniel: and then today he showed up at my apartment with flowers 🥺
Daniel: they were sweat peas!!!! 🥰🤩
Chaos: Was that to thank you for the murder orrrr?
Sharpshooter: Oh those are your favorite, was that on purpose?
Daniel: well I didn’t tell him
Daniel: so I’m not sure if he knew or if it was a coincidence 🤷
Daniel: but yeah then he took me out to this restaurant called Pete’s for dinner
Daniel: they had some amazing cannoli
Daniel: you should try it sometime if you get the chance
Daniel: and then after dinner he took me to the observatory!!!!!!! 🤩🥰
Sharpshooter: Gotham observatory?
Sharpshooter: Isn’t that the one with the special telescope, I think you mentioned it before
Daniel: yeah, the crystal-powered telescope!! 😍💞✨🤩❤️
Daniel: and at the end, he brought me home
Daniel: and he asked for my number!!!
TooFine: nice dude!
Chaos: The guy really went all-out and planned your dream date hu? So, what’s this mystery hunk’s name?
Daniel: oh I’m not sure, I didn’t ask 🙃🤭
Sharpshooter: Danny…
Daniel: yes?
Sharpshooter: Did you go on a date with a complete stranger who witnessed you commit a murder?
Chaos: How do you not even know his name?
Daniel: two words Jazz: Johnny 13
Daniel: and he’s not a stranger!! 😠
Sharpshooter: But you don’t know his name?
Chaos: We just can’t leave him alone, can we? Less than a week on his own and he already murdered one of Gotham’s most infamous rogues and then completely forgets the concept of Stranger Danger
Daniel: I mean he probably just found it when he tried to do some research on me or something
Daniel: probably got it from the school’s system now that I think of it 🤔
TooFine: dude who the hell is this guy??
Chaos: Who the fuck did you go on a date with?
Daniel: do you really think it was a date? 🥺😳
Daniel: I wasn’t sure
Daniel: cause he mainly took me out for dinner to thank me for the night before
Daniel: but then again
Daniel: he did get me flowers and ask for my number after he brought me back to my apartment 🤔
Daniel: like I wasn’t sure if I was reading the signals right…..
Daniel: but do you think that was a date? 🫣
Sharpshooter: Danny, for the love of the Ancients.
Sharpshooter: Who was it?
Daniel: oh, it was Red Hood 🥰
TooFine: damn dannys got that vigilante rizz
Sharpshooter: Red Hood? The crime lord?!
TooFine: former, actually
Daniel: what he said ^^
Chaos: Danny, you really have a type huh? Vigilantes with a Red theme. Who’s next? Red Robin?
Daniel: stop bullying me
TooFine: never
Chaos: Never
Daniel: on a different note, who changed my name in the chat again?
Sharpshooter: Ellie did.
Chaos: Ellie
TooFine: @TheCoolerDaniel
TheCoolerDaniel: 😎
TheCoolerDaniel: wait i just read back, danny’s dating a crime lord?? :0 👀

#16.2 Rachel
Bam stepped into the bare and bleak room of an old rented house on the outskirts. The only thing of interest was a simple wooden chair in the center of the room that was occupied by none other than Rachel. Her head was hung low and her wrists were tied behind her around the chair backrest. Mr. Agni reasoned he had to put her to sleep to avoid unnecessary fights, and assured Bam that she'd wake up soon enough.
Bam could hear Mr. Agni and Grace-hyung talking just outside of the room. It seemed like Mr. Agni had to go somewhere, since they exchanged goodbyes not long after. He shifted his focus back to Rachel and took a closer look at her wrists. He couldn't help but think that the rope was too much. It shouldn't be necessary for this conversation, right? It'd only upset her and he hated it when she did.
So he kneeled down and began to untie the rope. When he looked up, he noticed that Hyung was eyeing him warily. However, he just stood there by the door, not making any move to stop him.
Just right after he was done with the knot, Rachel stirred awake and familiar yellow eyes found him. She jerked away, screaming, "Wh– what do you want from me!"
Bam let the silence linger. Giving her time to regain her bearing and seek the answer herself.
Her face got a few shades paler as if she had seen a ghost. Or maybe, in a way, she did.
"Rachel," Bam muttered.
Shock flashed in her eyes before it settled to understanding. "Bam?" Rachel's voice was impossibly soft and sweet, yet it sounded so wrong. "Oh Bam, you're alive! I'm so glad."
…Was she though? She pushed him to his supposed death. But her face was a mix of relief and unbelief. Bam didn't know which was the real her anymore.
"Bam, we have to get out of here. I was kidnapped by a bad person. Quick, before he returns."
"You're not going anywhere." An unfamiliar voice joined them as Hyung finally stepped into the room. The lighthouse floating beside him must've acted as a voice changer. His hat was pulled down low underneath his hoodie, shadowing his face from view.
Rachel didn't seem to notice Grace's presence until then, if the shock on her face was anything to go by.
"Well then, Bam. Go ahead and ask her," Grace encouraged.
It was the first time he had heard Hyung's cold tone; emotionless and distant that sent shivers down his spine. But that thought could wait for later, because currently he finally had the chance to ask a question that had been plaguing him for the past six years.
"Why did you betray me, Rachel?"
Rachel no longer looked at him as sweetly. "What do you mean, Bam? I've never betrayed you."
"That day, you pushed me out of the bubble."
Rachel's eyes watered as she clenched her hand on her chest, "I was trying to save you from the monster attack. But I lost my balance and accidentally pushed you too hard." She looked away guiltily, voice now just above a whisper. "I had a nightmare about it every time I closed my eyes. I'm truly sorry, Bam."
"That's…" Bam was sure he had defeated the monster. Unless Rachel had mistaken some random fish as a threat? It could make sense, but things were still not adding up. "I saw you stand on your feet, at least explain to me why that is possible."
Rachel furrowed her eyebrows. "I think you remember it wrong."
"No! I know what I saw."
"And so am I!"
"Don't lie to me, Rachel." Bam begged. He was trying to find proof to justify her actions, but why did it only prove that Mr. Agni was right about her? About how she faked her disability to stab him in the back and take advantage of their friends. "You're the one who taught me that lying was bad, so are you trying to get me to think you're a bad person?"
"No, Bam–"
"Tell me, Rachel. Why did you try to kill me?" Bam felt his vision start to blur as tears trickled down his cheeks. It just dawned on him that the foul clenching feeling of his heart was the feeling of betrayal, from someone he trusted and looked up to, no less. "What did I do to you?"
Rachel didn't reply right away. But when she spoke, Bam's world crumbled. "The star…I want to shine as bright as it is rumored to be. But when you're around, I was nothing but a shadow because you took all the light. You who are chosen and loved by many, who wouldn't feel envy?" She gave a weak laugh and stood up. "You're right. I've been faking my injury. But this is what it takes to climb the tower for the unchosen. Innocence wouldn't get you this high, so I'm sure you're just as bad as I am."
Bam looked at his hands which had just recently been bathed in the blood of his opponent. He could still feel the stickiness that clung to his skin and he felt the urge to scrub his hands clean like he did the night before. So he was a bad person now? Was he doomed to never have friends again?
Bam caught an angry scowl on Rachel's lips as she walked past Grace and through the door. Grace tried to go after her but Bam quickly reached out and pulled on his hoodie to stop him from leaving. He didn't want to be left alone with her lingering words.

one day, i will write an astarion origin novel.
it's in the universe, it is a goal for my future, I call dibs, look out wotc and larian, I'm coming for your boy.
aka my brain wouldn't shut up yesterday and now I have a vague plot concept and an imaginary trailer that won't leave my head.
the trailer opens with a fancy carriage with a personal entourage rumbling down the road. a shot of well-adorned wrists, pale hands turning the pages of a book, voice-over of Astarion describing a city, building up with a sense of intrigue until the footman goes "City ho, my lord!" and one poised hand parts the curtains over the windows to reveal a young Astarion with moon-green eyes peering out. his expression goes from curiosity to his signature smirk before there's a sweeping shot of the city itself, as the monologue culminates in its name.
Baldur's Gate.
we get a montage of shots of exciting things happening across the city, bright lights and bazaars and dances and clubs, then we watch the carriage stop in front of a grand manorhouse, where awaits an elf with longer silver curls and matching green eyes, who addresses Astarion with handsome head high and a familial grin. "Well, if it isn't our newest magistrate. Vianavia, baby brother."
"Solaire."
some glimpses of this guy in regalia, on a judge's seat, High Justice Solaire Ancunin. voiced over with something like "Mother thinks the city will ruin you. I, on the other hand, think you have what it takes to make it yours. Just follow my lead; I'll teach you everything you need to know."
the two brothers traversing the city, from business to leisure, ending at a gala, where solaire catches astarion by the shoulder to subtly murmur to him, naming the most crooked political figures in the room, ending with some big crime boss or something who he describes as someone who thinks himself Untouchable. then solaire gives stari a smirk. "And we're going to ruin him."
escalating montage of legal drama, noble finery, cloak and dagger shenanigans, glimpses of slums, solaire clapping astarion on the back, toasts with the crooked politicians, the two pouring over documents, solaire demonstrating a spell bc wizard, stari escaping out a window with someone in pursuit, a gur settlement in the city… ending with stari delivering a final, condemning statement in court. then a few more rapid-fire clips, including one of a group of gur with weapons drawn, before we cut to black and a dramatic pause.
then the darkness blinks groggily away before we get a shot from the ground, looking up at the city night sky, where an out-of-focus cazador leans over, looking smug. "poor little boy. i told you this city would eat you alive."
End.

I'm still wrapping my head around it, but there's something about how this whole storyline and Eddie's evolving (?) philosophy about the universe is in conversation with the scene at the equestrian center about choice and the randomness of the universe. Something about Buck's utter determination (for self destruction, alas), no matter what the universe throws at him. That the universe screams, but it doesn't control our fate? That we still have to make our own choices, that we are responsible for who we are. Even if and when terrible things happen to us that we can't control, what matters is how we respond to that trauma.
I just really love the overarching narrative and how this theme about agency vs. the universe - choice vs. fate - are all being told through Eddie, at the moment. How the universe may be screaming at Buck, but you are 100% right: Eddie would believe that the choice is up to Buck. That Buck has to decide what (and who) he wants. But it is funny how this stance is leaving them in this emotional stalemate. Eddie, waiting. Buck, running away, deeper into self-destruction.
Anyway, sorry for rambling in your ask box, but I have feelings and would love to hear more of your thoughts on Buck and Eddie and the Universe.
oh i love this ask! eddie and faith, eddie and fate, buddie and the universe? sign me up every. single. time.
i think you’re definitely on to something with eddie’s evolving philosophy about the universe and charlie’s role in all of it (it’s actually why i think ‘suspicion’ should get all the credit). arguably, charlie and his mum represent a turning point for eddie; a single parent turned rotten, someone eddie trusts on instinct because he sees himself in her, and someone who betrays him and her own son in the end. it’s okay not to believe in a higher power if you can believe in people, but what happens when people are not inherently good? what is the point then?
if there are too many variables to keep track of, where does that leave eddie? eddie, who thought he could prepare for everything in his life and, most importantly, in his death. the binary code he can’t predict but can welcome when it comes. and the one time - the one time - he tries to put an end to a situation he didn’t see coming, he gets shot. the one time he reaches out to those he cared about, they’re dead. he starts wondering what’s the point of everything if it all ends in fire, what’s the point of his abuela collecting debt to say goodbye to his abuelo, what’s the point of mitchell dying when they could have found another way, what’s the point. and the point, i think he’s always instinctively known but is slowly realizing just now, is love.
“our job was always to save the person in front of us. and what happens next? well, we aren’t supposed to know. it got me thinking…about the day you got shot. i almost forgot that wasn’t even our call and it made me wonder if you ever wished we hadn’t saved him,” is what buck tells eddie before letting him know the second chance eddie blindly gave charlie - out of love and nothing else - worked. they didn’t know if it would, and it did. both buck and eddie agree there is nothing to regret, even if it’s random, even if it turns out a mess.
i think eddie accepted then and there that they will never know for certain whether it is all a coincidence or if there’s a bigger picture, but there is one conclusion: you can either listen to the universe and call it love, or scream with your own voice and call it love anyway. just like with ‘suspicion’, it’s about not being defined by what you attract - be it shitty people, natural disasters, unexpected losses -, nor by the cards you’ve been dealt. it’s about eddie being a great dad and still pulling into his orbit the exact opposite, which makes him feel used and stupid but also tells us one more time about his heart and what it desires. it’s about buck being stopped multiple times on the way to his donation and still running to make it work, because that’s what he thinks he desires. and everything is drenched in love; for a son, for an old friend, for the chance to give happiness to someone else. trial and error.
that’s why eddie wouldn’t actually stop buck from doing it; he knows randomness is not the enemy because choice is what matters. but i think buck is not there yet. he frantically looks for a sign, opens his arms to possibilities because in the great numbers reside higher chances, thinks his future is written unless what he needs to change it finds him first. there is very little agency in his ‘yes’, there is so much pain in his running and hoping for the best. eddie ultimately will show him that buck found love actively, organically, effortlessly and yes, also a bit randomly.
it’s truly a great love story story of love.
