"Despite the belief that leaving leaves will suffocate the lawn and leave them patchy, this isn’t the case.

According to The Farmer’s Almanac blogger Robin Sweetser, “pound for pound, leaves contain twice the mineral content of manure,” making it more powerful than the normal fertilizer and mulch that homeowners purchase each year.

By using leaves, homeowners are saving money on fertilizer and mulching that leaves will naturally do for free.

Environmentally, rotten leaves also act as food, shelter, and nesting or bedding throughout the winter for wildlife, bugs, and microorganisms. Moths and butterflies are known to winter in leaf litter, with birds and toads hiding beneath the leaves or picking through them in search of food.

This far and away beats the alternative of placing leaves in landfills, which FoodCycler warns can produce methane gas (CH4), which is 25 times worse for the environment compared to CO2 and traps atmospheric heat."

heeey, could i ask you for some advice? we're going back to nature with our lawns, but we have an old dog with a bunch of health issues who we need to be able to supervise outside at all times, and we also live close to the mountains (for reference, the colorado rocky mountains) and have skunks, badgers, raccoons and possums that roam our neighborhood, and we'd rather not encourage them to set up permanently in our back yard—is there a way to have a yard where a less-hardy, more frail dog can safely play, that also is not attractive as a habitat for the bigger wildlife critters, and also not have a godforsaken grass lawn? or is it just.. shitty lawn/dirt vs full wildscape? and do you have any recommendations?

A trimmed lawn that never sees any pesticides or herbicides is already WAY better than the standard, so don't worry too much about it. Violets, mosses, and yarrow form decent ground cover that isn't just plain grass, but you probably already have a good variety if you don't spray anything. Mowing less often, not raking leaves, etc. all help.

Having some "lawn" is fine. My family has "lawn," it's incredibly lush and full of dozens of plant species, we're just steadily chipping away at it with trees, shrubs and flower beds. My suggestion would be to research the types of plants that belong in your biome, and section off part of your yard for a bed that can be a little wilder, maybe with a fence so the dog doesn't get into it.

Even a relatively "tidy" wildflower garden with native species that are host plants for important pollinators is way, way better than doing nothing.

For critters, you'd probably need brush, thickets, rotting logs and hollow trees. If you wanted to turn a section of yard into a woody grove, you could plant trees relatively densely and cut/clear unwanted undergrowth and it'll be good for wildlife, and you can have flowers and stuff, but bigger mammals aren't likely to build a house there.

I can't give too much specific advice about a habitat I'm not super familiar with, but basically, do what you can while keeping your yard safe for family and pets. Any little bit of native wildflowers, trees and plants helps. The problem isn't that lawns exist, it's that they're maintained even where there's no reason to have a lawn, and with destructive methods like pesticides and herbicides.

So hear me out...

I cannot stop thinking about this Teen Wolf story that's been plaguing my mind for the past month... and it goes a little something like this:

Set in present day which brings most characters to be in their early 30's/late 20's.

Issac ends up on his own (away from Argents) in the forrest regions of France or England.

He meets a (insert fae creature/possibly also over run by a "dormant" demon) and that's his mate. Both supernatural beings trying to lay low and now get burned at the stake but ALSO keep the near town safe. (I still don't have a name for her uuuuuuugh)

Most of the characters live near the couple along with a small "pack" of not only werewolves and Banshees this time.

The pack doesn't have an Alpha cause fuck that bullshit but Issac being himself is pretty much the Alpha/leader. (His partner runs the chaos club but he tries to keep everything under control)

Issac met Theo on his last trip back to Beacon Hills, needing help from Chris Argent and befriending Theo, bring him back to (wherever he's living) and growing a close, brotherly bond with the slightly younger were-being. BFF bond!

Kira found Issac's mate in a time of need, helping her recover and becoming BFFs for better or for worst. She has become a close friend of Isaac because of this and their shared histories (what some might call betrayal) with Scott, and is the one he looks to when things begin to really pop-off.

Stiles ends up on a special FBI mission to the town, given his interests in the abnormal, and finds himself at Issac's doorstep.

After the death of Aiden, Ethan found solace in Issac and a reason to protect the innocent while also being a part of a pack alone. He couldn't be in a pack with more Alpha energy given everything that had happened, but also needs a team to keep him in line. (He and the girl may or may not have resurrected Aiden)

Danny followed close behind Ethan and continues to learn all he can about the supernatural and becoming a bit of a witch in some sense. Though, he and Ethan called it quites, both remain the other's biggest supporter.

Parish comes along on the more difficult "hunting" missions, letting his hound out to play in order to keep the peace back at home.

Braeden follows (though she really didn't need to) Parish to find the pack after noticing more and more bodies being found in very random towns throughout the globe, emanating to this one area. But lends her own services to the impending doom with some faces from the past.

Meredith lends a hand when things get tricky, having odd knowledge of the supernatural since coming back from her catatonic state and learning from one of the eldest Druids in Europe. She keeps an eye on Issac's mate when she gets her "feelings" of something being off. Knowing the ticking time bomb in their midst.

THE PLOT:

As more and more supernatural beings begin to invade the wildscapes of (insert town), the pack get stopped by a group of wild shapes outside Isaac's property alerting them to the imminent threat to all living creatures. The pack now have to prepare, comprehend, and fight a presence that has had millennias to build its strength.

Not to mention, the creatures taking advantage of the chaos to come.

Some will thrive.

Some won't survive.

Some can be trusted and some will break them all.

Everyone is a threat to someone.

“Mommy? What are you doing, Mommy? why are you holding the compost bucket? Don’t you dare open this door!”

If you look very closely you can see a cat who doesn’t care how many trip hazards I have to negotiate, as long as there’s something nice in the compost bucket. Our yard is very popular with strays, and she probably has kittens somewhere. She used to hiss at me if I was late with the compost.

You can see why Freya thinks this is unwise of me, but we’ve reached the time of year when compost needs to go out daily. I usually describe the yard as “wildscaped”, with yard work limited to basic pruning and weeding out invasive plants or things I don’t want for other reasons, but it’s almost a year since I did even that. The heel spur was painful even before it ripped the tendon in two, and I couldn’t do it.

The back of the house looks a lot ricketier than it is, btw. The contractor who made the enclosed back porches over and brought them up to code inside would not touch the asbestos shingles on the outside, even though it’s as inert as asbestos can be. And honestly I’d as soon keep them till after we finish rewiring.

Anyhow, I did not fall or strain the tendon, Freya did not quite have a heart attack, and we won’t have maggots in the kitchen tomorrow so it’s all right.

And little Ms. Hissy here will find flakes of salmon in with the lettuce stalks and bad tomato, so we should all be happy once Freya’s over her snit. We tell her she can’t go out because of evil dogs and then I pull a stunt like this!
