Choose STEM: The Strand that Holds the Future

STEM, or Science, Technology, and Engineering Mathematics, is a program taken by secondary students before going to college. This educational program aims to produce students who are academically competent in terms of logical thinking and equip them with skills as preparation for careers, especially in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (Lutkevitch, 2022). In the Philippines, the STEM strand is offered in senior high school before going to college, which gives students advantages in pursuing courses in the fields of medicine and engineering.

The STEM strand offers different subject areas, which include the core subjects, contextualized subjects, and specialized subjects, for two semesters in each school year. These subjects include oral communication, earth science, empowerment technologies, research, pre-calculus and basic calculus, and many more (Department of Education, n.d.). With STEM, students will be able to learn and grasp ideas and lessons that are also taken up in college courses. They will also have advanced knowledge in terms of complex scientific problems and the future of modern technology (AMA Online Senior High School, 2023).

STEM is essential for the economic development of every country. Thus, it is recognized and implemented by the government, like in the Philippines (StrandPh, 2023). Most universities also prefer STEM graduates as they are more inclined toward real-life application of ideas, have collaboration skills, and can easily adapt to changing work conditions. And in terms of career opportunities, taking the STEM program in SHS opens a wide range of white collar jobs, which include being a biologist, engineer, architect, nutritionist, computer programmer, and many more (AMA Online Senior High School, 2023). And also, pursuing STEM-related courses leads to higher-paying jobs as our world is mainly focused on the development of technologies and maintaining global stability (Lutkevitch, 2022).

In general, STEM is one of the important SHS tracks that are offered by many schools in the Philippines, as this program aims to develop and enhance the skills of many students before going to college. And along with the development and emerging economy, there is an increase in demand for STEM professionals to cater to and lead these changes for everyone. Thus, the government is implementing and promoting STEM education in every school. Moreover, having an interest in pursuing a STEM-related career is a great option to consider, as the STEM strand will allow you to build a strong foundation in many fields and have the chance to explore many career paths.

Choosing the STEM strand in senior high school is not only about aiming to develop your logical and analytical thinking and aiming for high-paying jobs; you will be part of the development of our changing��world.

What is STEM?

An educational program developed to prepare primary and secondary students for college, graduate study and careers in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, these four fields share an emphasis on innovation, problem-solving, and critical thinking and together they make up a popular and fast-growing industry. This designed to nurture senior high school students’ curiosity, problem solving abilities, and communication skills.

The STEM Strand's objectives are that the individual has increased their creativity and ingenuity, which is critical for producing new ideas and breakthroughs. Be more willing to try new things and take risks. Apply their classroom information effectively in real-life settings, particularly in subsequent courses. Students have the core skills needed to flourish in their chosen courses and qualify for careers in the STEM.

The benefits of STEM strand promotes teamwork among students, allowing them to solve problems, record data, write reports, present presentations, and prepare them for STEM strand jobs by allowing students to experiment and naturally experience failures as part of the learning process. The program teaches students the importance of technology in the digital world and promotes adaptation in the face of unforeseen problems.

W1 Phenomenology

Today’s session could not have been further stressed about the correlation between reality and consciousness. The duck or the rabbit image exemplified how phenomenology applied to art makes people’s perspectives differ. But not only specifically in art, I think this can be put into our daily lives, where we go through endless decisions and discussions. And probably this is where the concept of debates and controversies are created.

My father likes the philosopher Descartes, and he exposed me to the <Method of Doubts> since I was little. Growing up with him was all about questioning logics and introspections. It was nice to be reminded how powerful the misuse of our minds such as confusion and unconsciousness can be, especially since everything sounded familiar to what my dad had always been teaching me.

* W3 Photography, Still Life Objects - This project specifically required endless try-outs to achieve a specific effect I want. I couldn't realise how impactful the light and background reflections, until I started shooting pictures. Understanding the logic of the power of these small elements, and I make a connection to today's lecture by approaching subjects with multiple point of views.

*Night to Light Festival - One of the most commonly asked questions was 'What if this happens? Or what if this doesn't happen?' and I think that inspired us to explore more lightning techniques. Because the visual effects are created through machines, sometimes there would be clashes between images. Figuring out the best combination of lights was the key to the event.

I have titled my series of photos: “Golden Hour”. Although some may view my pictures as a collection of red items, I actually tried to capture all the emergency-related items around school. I was surprised how these items are so unconscious and unimportant to us until the moment of emergency actually hits and they become one of the first things that we look for. I tried to relate my photos to the given theme; time, by interpreting the importance of it - linking to the common knowledge of the golden hour - that appropriate time usage can actually save more lives.

As a conclusion, I learnt the importance of paying attention to details and perceiving things from various perspectives. Applying this skill to design would bring innovative and powerful artworks.

Gen Z Anxieties

In a report surveying 1,000 18-26 year olds

New report from data management firm Harmony Healthcare IT showed that 61% of Gen Z have an anxiety condition

most common cause of their anxiety was the future

45% said their main concern was finances

48% said they go on walks, hikes, paint or play instruments to help manage their anxiety

40% said they eat unhealthy foods when trying to manage their stress

34% said they use cannabis to cope

32% said they drink alcohol to cope

mostly driven by uncertainty

digital age has caused Gen Z to grow up with an unlimited amount of information at their fingertips

Gen Z have the least experience with uncertainty compared to elder generations

for example, when needing to know where to go, you can easily view google maps removing any uncertainty which didn't exist before

the Covid-19 pandemic created a lot more uncertainty

economic instability is still a problem today with companies still cutting jobs and leaving employees feeling stressed

cost of living crisis in the UK has caused 84% of UK workers to report feeling stress or anxiety

Loneliness

Young people aged 16-24 feel more lonely than any other age group

Gen Z are hyperconnected in the digital world, but socially disconnected in person

Digital interactions fail to replace the need to connect on an emotional level in person

Overstimulated but under-socialised

fewer shared moments and memories and the collective experience has lost ground to individual experiences

Even in the real world, loneliness is becoming more common, for example supermarkets replace humans with self scan checkouts, removing human interaction

Financial

Most young people can't afford to buy a house or raise a family

Becoming adults in an era of societal collapse

only 31% of Gen Z feel financially secure

Gen Z normalises working multiple jobs

50% of Gen Z are 'extremely worries' about not having enough money

Travel

Study from Promova found 50% of Gen Z american travellers feel anxiety around language barriers when travelling internationally

Despite this, less than a third of American travellers attempt to learn even basic phrases of the language ahead of travelling to the country
