3. “Are we gonna fight? Like fist to fist or rather… lips to lips?”

A warm August night, and the day – and at the same time the feast – of Saint Aure’guen was a time when animals spoke with human voices, flowers changed their places and arranged themselves in beautiful patterns, and the stars showed the future to those who dared to look at them. It was a magical moment, celebrated only once a year on the fourth Tuesday of the month mentioned above.

“... It’s beautiful today, isn’t it?” You asked quietly, squeezing your lover’s hand tighter, who timidly nodded his head, looking at the stars arranged in various figures or signs. The moon was obscured by dark clouds giving the opportunity to shine that night to its smaller brothers. “Do you see anything interesting? Has heaven told you a secret or something?”

The Prince of Aquemering looked into your shining eyes for a brief moment, then turned his full attention back to the dark and the flashing dots. He was observant, intelligent, and loved anything to do with space. He was the opposite of you – a boy boy who loved music, painting and fencing. You loved the mundane things, while Rey loved history, the mysteries of the world, the cosmos and the depths of all the oceans that surround the earth, and all the fossils and ancestors of your families.

“The stars warn of a battle between the two of us. We must beware of third parties who will seek to destroy our happiness.” He said quietly, closing his tired eyelids.

As the future king, and also the current prince of Ignitesu, you will certainly be forced to marry a woman whose name you will hear on the occasion of your wedding ceremony in a few years. You will surely become the father of several children, a respected ruler and beloved man of the whole kingdom. But it wasn’t what you wanted. You just wanted to spend your next years, until the day of your death, with a person with whom you share not only love, but also mutual respect, sincere friendship and much more important values than the desire to start a family or exercise power over the entire country. These feelings were stronger than life and more certain than death.

“Ohh, I see. So... Are we gonna fight? Like fist to fist or rather… lips to lips?” You joked, wanting to lighten the atmosphere between the two of you, but Ray just rolled his eyes, pinching your warm right cheek.

The stars never lie; perhaps your fight will be symbolic – for a piece of baked potato with pepper on a plate – or perhaps it will have a second bottom that will end your relationship once and for all. The stars were never wrong, but they also never said when it would happen; tomorrow, in five months, in eight years, on your seventieth birthday. Or maybe posthumously? Nobody knows that.

Now, however, you wanted to enjoy the Night of Truth and each other’s presence. You didn’t want to think about superfluous things, you didn’t want to talk about the future. Now, in this moment, you valued the present and your current feelings. What will be tomorrow will be tomorrow.

Thinking about how the photo Ray took of Isabella burned up with plant no.3, so the only pictures the children possibly have of her in the human world are mugshots stored in headquarters' database that might have been updated every year on her birthday.

How surreal it is to see her like that, grappling with memories of the complicated woman they knew—the good and the bad—and the young girl staring back at them who resolutely held her head up high to prove she had what it took to survive in a demon's world, knowing all the unspoken pain behind her eyes.

Music: The soul of an anime

[Recommendation: find the showed songs in YouTube meanwhile you read this text. It can help to give an atmosphere to your lecture. at the end of this essay, you can see the ones who are refered and some recomendations]

Music. When we talk about music, we are not talking about theorical things like rhythm, pulse, tempo or even the creations of the sheets with our favourite music. When we talk about music, we talk about emotions, about feelings, about perception, about atmosphere and, why not, about empathy.

The implementation of the music in any audiovisual medium is an effective mode to give the audience a form to relate with the situation on screen and give context about what do we need to feel. Even if you don’t feel it, you can know what you are supposed to feel.

To introduce this essay, I propose an activity. Please search for an uncomfortable scene in some anime or any video with that goal (recommended: It don’t need to be gore or anything explicit), mute it and put a romantic music and then, repeat with a catwalk song and then with a sad song. Then, take a romantic, sad or a beautiful scene in an anime. Mute it and then put a creepy song (like the ones put in 2014´s creepypastas). Repeat with a clown song and then with a violent song. You can do this experiment with any scene and with any song that doesn’t fits the real purpose.

As you can see in that activity, the music that is playing along with the scene change the feeling that wants to share. This phenomenon can be seen even in the intro of the show.

We can take examples from Shingeki no kyojin “guren no yumiya” and kakegurui “deal with the devil” Both are anime very different between them and appeal to a different public. The first has a very energic and epic song that push you to fight with your soul, with honour and be to proud of it. The other one welcome you to a world of sin, greed, and chaos, but in a “jazzy” way, like if you were called by a mermaid to that world. (Both interpretations are subjective. It depends to the vision you have to that song)

[WARNING: the following lines may contain minor spoilers of “Yakusoku no neverland” and “Carole and Tuesday”. Watch carefully]

Inside the show you can also see that scenario. In "the promised neverland", the “Isabella´s lullaby” can be catalogued as a “bad end lullaby” being an antithesis of what lullabies are meant for. “Bad end lullabies” are songs that, in a way to calm a child sadness, predicts the bad fortune of the child and who is singing, or even their despair (the person who is dedicated the song don´t need to be a child though). Examples in the pop music are “nana triste” (Natalia Lacunza) and “nana del mediterraneo” (Maria José Llergo)

You hear it when a kid is murdered and when Isabella has their epiphany at the end of the show. It is clear and you can´t avoid it because isn’t just a decoration, is a “dialogue”. You can see their destiny, but is sad, because Isabella feels that sadness too.

In Carole and Tuesday, the example is even more explicit. “The loneliest girl” is their song. Is the song that defines their relationship. Both girls feel what they want to say. “Can you feel my teardrops of the loneliest girl? /Keep it close and you´ll start to grow” are both lines that the protagonists say to each other. Ironically, they are together in their loneliness. This song isn’t the only one that wants to say something special, but any of their songs are meant to relate with the characters.

[End of minor spoiler section. (I really recommend Carole and Tuesday, so if you didn´t watched yet, do it)]

Obviously, this doesn’t only apply to series. Anime movies are also a good example of soundtracks that capture the essence of the history. Joe Hisaishi, the musical composer of many of Miyazaki’s works, made a lot of songs that even went viral in social media. Some people may have not seen Miyazaki’s movies but is almost secure that the first approach to “howl´s moving castle” was Hisaishi´s “merry-go-round of life”. A song that gives a magical atmosphere to the film and even transcends outside the history and became a viral song.

Doing a link to my first essay in this blog, the movies are also present in videogames. In Anime games, like fire emblem, you can see some songs that want to reach you the main plot and the atmosphere of the game, for example: “Twilight of the gods” (FE Echoes: Shadows of Valentia) “Lost in thoughts all alone” (FE fates) and “the edge of down” (FE thee houses).

In conclusion, we need to appreciate the musical work that are behind our beloved anime. In this essay wasn´t shown a lot of background songs, but those songs also deserve recognition. The music is something that is always between us, and we need to put more attention to that melodies that help us relate with our favourite characters. Without the music, the shows could never be as good as they are with the music.

It’s not just decoration but is a necessary and obligatory thing inside a show´s plot.

but oliver comes in to be the main motivation among your group, telling everybody to not get their minds tainted by the demons doing

his advice may be the hard slap to the face but it was what everyone needed, his words bringing hope to you and your group

oliver was a dear person to you and you hate that you can't show how much you appreciate his kindness and soft tone when he wants to heal your wounds

that's why you stick alongside him as an assistant, you could call yourself that since you brainstorm plans with him the most and show the group ideas on how to survive

it's the least you could do since he was there for you from the very start

whenever you get terribly sick, he was always the first to tend to you and feed you food and tells you not to overwork yourself

it's feelings forming in you that you want to ignore, this wasn't the best place to fall in love, you say but were you actually in too deep?

how he's fast on his feet to defend and drag you away when your legs don't move and you freeze to the freakishly tall demons who were seconds away from grabbing you if it wasn't for oliver

telling to try your best to focus and try to protect the other new kids who just joined and you nodded, roughly patting his back to assure him you got this

from how many times you save each other from near death situations makes your heart race, heck it could even beat more faster to how you're feeling right now trying to gather up the others

that's why you nearly had a heart attack when he fell on his knees to the sharp claws of a demon's hand who pierced itself through oliver's skin which he tried taking in to protect everyone

lucas immediately patched him up, trying to keep his cool so anyone wouldn't panic over his condition even more than they were now

his closed eyes freaked you out more when he laid on the ground, stomach wrapped in bandage and you uncontrollably teared up messily, cannot even getting a hold on your emotions as your crush lay still on the matress in front of you

lucas immediately held you in his arms, rubbing your back and telling you to calm down and do this for oliver

"stay strong for oliver, he needs you to focus"

focus, a word you try to always do because of the boy you fell in love with but what if he was the reason you couldn't do it in the first place?

when he woke up? you were careful not to jump on him and you sniffled hugging him, he was suprised to see you cry but he understands, anyone would be in the state of shock and panic, they would cry

after escaping goldy pond, it was time for both of you to heal,

from the monstrosity of that place that was harder hell, it was weird to just relax in the state of peace with everyone

you worry from time to time of oliver's state and he could see it in your eyes and he easily calms you down by holding your hand and squeezing it, telling you that he's okay

the rarest moments in which you smiled is where he'll always cherish it forever

when times change and everyone could be at peace in the human world, everyone did not waste their time there and of course enjoyed every passing minute

you've joined in on oliver and violet as pilots and laughed along with everyone when emma was really shocked to see a plane being infront of her house

violet could catch on with your crush with how many times you glaned at oliver when he focused on the controls and switches

violet would slide over to you and whisper in your ear with how long you've been staring at oliver with a wicked grin on her face

your heart quickly beats and you shook your head, asking her why would she think of that

"you're a bad liar y/n, just confess. he probably is dying to tell you that he likes you too"

wellll you don't know about that, maybe he has to say it first? with how much self control he tries not to fluster on the switches when your eyes are on him, how could he confess that he likes you?

I’m blanking on specific tropes and extremes because the content curation I do for myself mostly avoids this, but I relate to what @officersnickers mentioned in this post a lot:

Things done in fanfic that annoy me: Ray being constantly annoyed with Emma and Norman; listen, he‘s sarcastic and sometimes loses his temper, but overall, Ray always takes time to explain things that annoy him, without too much scolding. In some stories, I get the feeling he doesn’t even like Emma and Norman, the way he acts, or he drank too much edgy juice™ this morning. Also Norman being all bashful around Emma. He‘s certainly not a casanova, but I like to imagine he cooled down over his crush for her and is just as happy as Emma herself to experience new feelings alongside her. That being said, I don‘t really see Emma being either too shy around either of them or drifting into turbo mode when she‘s in the mood. I like her as a complex, more differentiated character and not a child in a teenager’s or adult body. She’s not dumb and she‘s not over the top 24/7.

So I guess it’s the flanderization of their characters for least favorite?

In an effort to incorporate Ray’s cheekiness/playful teasing that’s most prominent during his time at Grace Field (which I do enjoy and feel like circumstances lead him to refrain from doing this more post-Goldy Pond, both in-universe and metawise), some writers will go overboard and have it descend into almost sketch comedy levels of antagonistic hijinks. Which is fine if people want to write it since it’s all in good fun and they’re exploring things with these characters that appeal to them, but I don’t vibe with it very much.

I do like to think that side of him would resurface more once he’s in the safety of the human world, especially among those he’s closest to.

(Chapter 161; whenever I look at this too quickly I think Ray’s lightly yet exasperatedly slapping Norman instead of Norman being so excited and invigorated by Emma’s speech that he accidentally bonks into Ray and Ray’s reflexively shielding himself djfkdjs)

Norman’s love for Emma being misconstrued into extremes ranging from being embarrassingly and uncharacteristically nebbish to a yandere is also annoying (covered in this post by @princesscringe with some additional tags I also felt were relevant). Again chalking this up as more of a balance thing because young love can be intoxicating and overwhelming, and when you’re specifically writing fic where the focus is the ship, greater emphasis on those feelings naturally happens. But to the point where it’s all-encompassing and Norman neglects other people who are important in his life or seems to lack any ambition outside of the relationship is so off-putting. That’s part of the significance of his first exchange with Emma upon their reunion in the final chapter:

He starts off by emphasizing how, through mutual effort and support, the cattle children have been able to finally start thriving in life instead of merely surviving, and stressing how they’ve all been well, because Emma would hate if out of worry and fear for her they weren’t able to create some new happy memories and appreciate the freedom she sacrificed so much for.

While also showing he’s taken to heart what she said about being honest and vulnerable around others by openly acknowledging how even with all the good that came from this and the fulfillment he found in other pursuits and interactions, he still missed her terribly and wanted her as a part of his life. (If this arc was longer I would have liked to see the children struggling with conflicting feelings of bitterness over Emma’s choice to do this without consulting anyone after how the narrative repeatedly stressed against this level of individual self-sacrifice, but with the amount of pages Shirai had left I’m happy with what he chose to focus on.)

I do enjoy him being briefly stunlocked/flustered by something Emma or Ray say or do because that’s more in tune with how they’re all dynamic characters who are constantly changing and challenging each other as they grow older, tying into the emblematic “I’ll show you something cool, so shut up and follow” line infused with an infectious optimism for the future.

Emma being shy for a prolonged period of time is also off for me with the amount of self-confidence she displays. When there’s something she wants and believes it’s correct to do so, she just goes for it. (It’s why I always maintain she’s the last one to consciously realize and articulate her feelings in a relationship because once she does it’s like, “wait, why aren’t we together? We should fix that,” and the progress on it dramatically picks up lfjldj I love her respectful tenacity and ambition.) Yet pigeon-holing her as a genki girl is also dishonest to her character, even if she is incredibly exuberant and plucky in her default, unstressed state; she’s energetic but it’s with an acute awareness. (This is something I give more leeway to in individual short comics with the hyperbole being used to quickly and clearly deliver a punchline with a limited amount of time and space).

For favorite…does hurt/comfort count as a trope or a genre? I like them taking turns with that for each other. 🖤🧡🤍

Headcanon:

During the search, sometimes ( when he's at the verge of feelings) Norman secretely goes to the beach when they last saw her, hoping for the impossible. Some day he just feel very hopeless he goes there without telling anyone. As logical he can be, he comes back from time to time, hoping he'll find her walking out the water just like they did.

Of course, Ray notices soon, but just pretend he doesn't. Norman still struggles with sharing his burden with the others, even when they all are on the same boat. Sometimes they argue about it, but sometimes Ray just leaves him be. Especially in those moments when he goes there. Ray has his own ways to deal with loss as well.
