This Week in BL - The Industry is Having Issues But the Spice Spicy Must Flow

Organized, in each category, with ones I'm enjoying most at the top.

March 2024 Wk 4

Ongoing Series - Thai

Two Worlds (Thurs IQIYI) eps 1-2 of 10 - One of those "he's dead Jim so time travel" thingames starring MaxNat. I'm over this concept but I do enjoy MaxNat. Phupha (Gun) and Khram (Nat) love each other but Phupha is murdered. Then Khram is pulled to a parallel world where, years ago, Khram and Tai (Max) were in love. However, Khram was killed by Tai’s dad. Now Tai finds alter-Khram. But then there is ALSO an alter-Phupha to deal with. (Phupha is played by Gun Thanawat who was Khom, the repressed butler bodyguard from Unforgotten Night. We like this, but we scared of the love triangle aspect.) Did that make sense? Yeah, okay, see what I mean?

Initial thoughts?

The subs are troubling but I’m enjoying this show a lot. It’s nice to see MaxNat get something meaty to sink their teeth into - that’s not just each other. Also it’s so smart of them to give us a fully fleshed out entire episode developing the alter romance rather than just a separation + death. It makes Khram’s grief and motivation that much more believable. Also it’s really nice to see Nat have good chemistry with other actors.

Deep Night (Thurs iQiyi) ep 3 of 8 (10?) - I'm still enjoying it. But Two Worlds is objectively better. So this one has lost ranking. Also, unexpectedly chili (the name of my heavy metal Thai cover band).

Lovey switchy and verse main couple too.

This is all quite pleasing.

The bit where the hosts pretend to be a BL couple actor ship was epic on so many levels.

Also unsettling.

All sex work is performative, and in a way there is something more honest about this depiction, in this setting, than what BL actors are made to do on the promo circuit. Which then begs the question, how different is BL from sex work? That's the unsettling bit, for me anyway. Not to slam on sex work AT ALL, we pro-the-true-pros on this damn blog, but actors have been shaded by association with True Professionals for a very long time and BL has already had one epic shut down in this regard. (See the PerthSaint scandal around Love By Chance, no I will not explain.) Where was I? Oh yes, so anyway, see the Gossip section for the part where they better be paid either way!

Also, since I'm a warped fucker, I found this scene funny.

And then hilarious when all of those BL tropes were just trotted out. Like a greatest hits reel.

To Be Continued (Thai C3 Thailand grey) ep 5 of 8 - I’m still enjoying it but getting more and more nervous. We getting too close to Promise territory for comfort. EXPLAIN Ji’s reticence well and do it now or risk audience mistrust. We have to be given a GOOD reason for Ji's behavior, or he'll be irredeemable.

City of Stars (Fri iQIYI) ep 8 of 12 - NO SINGING. Yes smiley kisses and good communication and a nice healthy relationship. But no singing!

1000 Years Old ep 6 of 12 - Dropping in the ranks. I’m sorry it’s just gotten boring. It has, however, inspired me to invest in my own ridiculous cream fuzzy sweater. Which I plan to wear with leather trousers and huge stumpy boots, like the Kpop queer I truly am. Or do I mean vampire?

Kiseki Chapter 2 (Sun iQIYI) ep 1 of 6 - Seems to be an excuse for a small posse of Thai actors to wander around Tokyo playing tourist and sing in public . Someone stop them?

Anyway, it’s v boring. I’ll give it one more ep but I suspect I’ll DNF.

Close Friend Season 3: Soju Bomb! (Weds iQIYI) eps 1-2 of 6 - Meh. This is also looking suspiciously DNF-a-licious.

Ongoing Series - Not Thai

Unknown (Taiwan Tues Youku YouTube & Viki) ep 5 of 11 - It's brilliant. I love it. I'm ready to hurt. Let’s do this thing.

Distribution note: This one has been picked up and is also airing on Viki now, so it may lose YT distribution in soem territories. I like Youku's hard subs better than Viki's subs, but that's a matter of preference not information since I don't speak Mandarin.

Love is Better the Second Time Around AKA Koi wo Suru nara Nidome ga Joto (Japan Weds Gaga) ep 3 of 6 - It is good. Every week I like this show a little more. I'm enjoying a reunion romance explored in Japan's quintessentially contemplative yet slightly surreal way. The juxtaposition of the tenderness of the sex scene with this Japanese brand of authenticity was oddly elegant - for lack of a better way of putting it. All in all, this is a good show. Thought provoking. Stylish.

AntiReset (Taiwan Fri Viki/Gaga) ep 9 of 10 - It remains lovely but they sure are reusing a lot of footage. Also, this was a classic penultimate doom episode. I do wonder how they are going to resolve this show ethically.

My Strawberry Film (Japan Thurs Gaga) ep 6 of 8 - It is what it is, and it isn’t my style of show no matter what country of origin. Oddly that's one of the reasons I don't like it. Anyone could have made this, it's not as Japanese as I want it to be, it's just indie film club high school angst. Yawn.

The Servant and the Young Master (Vietnam YouTube) 7 eps - I dislike vertical filming, but I kind of enjoyed this show as a BL. I like class conflict romances. For me the rich kid is a bit too dictatorial (edges into bulling), but it’s kinda works. It’s sparse and underdeveloped and a bit plotless, but mildly entertaining. If you're missing Vietnamese BL you might give it a try. 6/10

Graduation Countdown (Taiwan YouTube) ep 1 of ? - on one hand it's micro-installment vertical, on the other it's adorable and from Taiwan. I blame @heretherebedork entirely for my conundrum. As indeed, I did for My Type back in the day. (That was Nat Chen's first BL, yes of Kiseki: Dear To Me fame.) So I think I will also simply lean on Here to let me know when it's done and binge all at once. It's just too much to ask me to keep up with 2 minute pieces, I don't have that kind of endurance training, not even for BL.

Time the series (Tue Gaga/YT) 10 eps - it's finished now, I dropped it at ep 4. Should I bother?

A Secretly Love (Thai Sat WeTV grey) 10 eps - I watched the first ep but grey is too much work for this inferior of a show. I may pick up and binge if it gets distribution but for now, it gets a DNF from me. KimCop might have held this crap together but Kim without Cop? No thank you.

Lady Boy Friends (Thai WeTV grey) 16 eps - reminds me a bit too much of Diary of Tootsies only high school. Not my thing. DNF unless it turns a corner and is truly amazing for some reason.

Man Suang that MileApo vehicle from last year is coming to Netflix in the USA. I haven't heard much about it and since the KP stans would have lost their tiny minds if it was any good at all, I'm assuming it's not good at all.

Gossip

Thai BL actor Yoon breaks with his former company and talks about some very very VERY shady goings on in the Thai BL industry. Including not being paid.

And whacha know, same thing happening in Korean BL.

3/31 Only Boo! (Thai GMMTV YouTube) 12 eps - New main couple for GMMTV in an idol romance about a boy who dances good and a food stand vendor. Other side of the tracks grumpy/sunshine pair who fall deeply in love but, of course, baby boy idol can't date. Boyband but from GMMTV? Control your singing and I'm game.

4/1 Love is like a Cat (Korea ????) 12 eps - This completed filming Aug 2022(!) which means there have been serious problems with post-production. This is another of Silkwood's Korean+Thai colab projects. Mew Suppasit plays a rookie film star, called the Cat Prince (for his cold arrogance) who goes up against a charismatic puppyish animal daycare director (JM of JUST B). There is also a side romance (love triangle?) with a veterinarian. Geonu of JUST B is also in the cast.

I wonder if this was part of the hold up, with Geonu on Build Up right now, they might have tried to muffle this one. Or maybe it's just that bad...

4/3 We Are (Thai GMMTV YouTube) 12 eps - University ensemble BL featuring PondPhuwin, WinnySatang, AouBoom, MarcPawinPoon - basically the good kind of messy gay friendship group (so more My Engineer and less Only Friends). Looks a bit like the Kiss series but everyone is queer. I'm IN!

Knock-Knock Boys (Thai WeTV?) - 4 college friends conspire to help their friend lose his virginity. Familiar faces like Seng (yes, Billy's previous partner), Best and frest face, news here.

Not really an interpretation, just a clarification!

ok little Yoshiden fan approaching... I'm afraid we're not happy with the same thing

If I'm shouting Yoshiden content, it's because it's been a long time since Yoshida last appeared. And even longer since he interacted with Denji.

What I loved about this chapter was seeing them in even more opposite positions, but still seeing Yoshida's slightly silly side. Always wanting to provoke Denji and trigger angry emotions.

Now... interpreting an entire scene in a sexualized way is disturbing. I've even seen people say that Fujimoto deliberately set up a strange yaoi-style atmosphere with consent bias. Fans see it as confirmation of a sadistic Yoshida who dreams of having a hold on Denji.

I hope I don't have to go on and on about how strange I find it to interpret these things in this way, not least because Yoshida and Denji are both minors, but also because to interpret the whole scene as gay bating or fan service is once again to miss the point of the chapter entirely.

Let's stop and think. It all makes sense, and nothing but absolutely NOTHING has been set up just for fan service. If Denji is almost naked, it's for two reasons in my opinion. A punishment from Yoshida, but like a frustrated teenager punishing another for not listening to him (Denji showed too much of himself as Chainsaw Man and came close several times to revealing his identity to Asa).

Then, in a symbolic way, to show Denji's vulnerability, as he's left with nothing. Far from Nayuta. Far from Asa. Far from his beloved dogs.

Finally, to contrast with the famous plan to do everything in his power to protect Chainsaw Man. Boom. On the next page, we see Denji in a rather humiliating and dehumanizing position. Symbolizing that NO, this isn't really in his best interest.

I don't want to unpack this old debate yet, but the reason I'm producing more content about Asaden is because fans see them more as a couple between two teenagers. I don't like the interpretation of Yoshiden fans, who are always on the verge of consent, imagining Yoshida as a sadist in his thirties when he's a teenager whose only way of communicating is through manipulation and provocation. I like Yoshiden because I think it's funny to see Denji explore an unexpected bisexuality. I'd like some sweet content in between.

Denji is a victim of abuse. Yoshida seems like a victim crushed by the equally biased system. I don't want them to hurt each other.

Queer content has to stop being tinged with violence, whether physical or sexual.

It can also just be cute.

after learning about what happened with yaoiboypussy i almost feel scared to continue this blog, as a trans man who enjoys yaoi unironically.

i will continue, even if the weirdos who hate trans men get to me, i suppose.

to make things clear, and to clear out my follower list, if any of you somehow ended up here...

i am a transgender man, i use he/him pronouns, and using other pronouns for me that i have not stated are okay is misgendering, blatantly. i am a supporter of trans men, and their unique experiences with misogyny and oppression even within the trans community. i am an ally to all trans people, and i believe that discussions of transmasc oppression can and should coexist with discussions of transfem oppression, and that discussing one is not overshadowing the other. we are one community, we are siblings, and while we experience some things differently, we have the same enemy.

i believe that BL and yaoi is not a genre exclusively for women, and i believe that the BL community needs to become more inclusive of other people.

i don't like that i had to make this post. if what happened to yaoiboypussy didn't happen, i wouldn't have made it at all. but since we run in similar circles, i felt the need to do so, even though i am a much smaller blog.

let trans men be funny, let trans men be part of the BL community, let trans men take up space. we have always been here, we have always supported you, and we will continue to do so.

I-early signs

-Nazi sausage party ocs (inspred by doctor Mengele, following a nazi blog

-drawing Kesha and glorifying her illness

-Zoophobia (contains the Addison drawings, Mirage being depicted as goofy when she's a pedo, Sahara and Latika designs

-supporting blaire white and Shoe0nhead (her too since Shoe has recently been revealed as a neo nazi)

-transphobia (discord messages)

-drawing Mimzi as a caricature/stereotype of Jewish people

II-Spindlehorse & twitter

-Raphielle shipping valangel, saying their a proshipper and still working on SH

-Following multiple proshippers, including someone who used audios of REAL kids for his digital CP and someone who actively ships Rick/Morty

-allowing and encouraging the harrasment of people who critique her shows to the point they are forced to come out or receive rape threats

-Blaming A24 for the lack of competent advertisement on Hazbin Hotel and replacing the voice cast

-encouraging harassing Erin Frost and Kendraw for coming out with their experience with her

-Studio reviews revealing the nepotism and abuse in the SH studio

III- The shows

-finn/ cole was made cis when he was originally trans

-sally mae only regarded by the fandom as a trap or futa, sexualised in every piece of her merch with her dick being emphasized to the point the fandom fetishizes her

-alastor being made creole or mixed as an afterthought, when Viv had already used real life voodoo symbols, very clearly inspiring alastor from Wendigos without any research, made him white as paper and depicted him as the 100th " asexual and aromantic person is an evil murderer!".

His asexuality and possible aromanticism is always ignored by the fandom in favor of shipping, and inclusive Vivziepop even said to do as they pleased with his sexuality for shipping.

-forced positivity, pushing the idea that even murderers, abusers and horrible people can change hazbin hotel

Depicting abuse (Crimson hitting Moxxie, the whole Valangel tag existing) and sexual assault (again woth Moxxie and angel) as funny jokes or sexy

-Noticing a pattern, Viv tends to promote M/M relationships a lot but depicts them as overtly sexual, predatory and toxic, and seems to have a problem with having "twink" characters abused sexually in a yaoi-ish way (Addison, Moxxie and Angel, Vox. Stolas/blitz too.)

-the only two people of color that are confirmed are Alastor, Velvette and Valentino. Velvette's color is very ashy and she is often infantilised (this might have more to do with her being a woman in Vivs eyes) she presents no POC features at all, neither does Valentino who is a stereotypical black man who is a pimp, abusive (sexually too) and has a short temper.

-using "it's hell " as an excuse to make horrible characters to glorify and depict as the true victim while doing nothing to become better. (Ex. Stolas is a rapist , Blitzo Sexually harrasses his co-workers and is very toxic, Alastor is a serial killer.) Depiction is not glorification, but Viv actively makes it seem like all of it is okay to do and has a show who has a very negative message that affects the viewers and fanbase into excusing disgusting shit.

-disrespecting religion by not accurately researching the demons she talks about

-Sexist writing in helluva and hazbin that favores males(Loona,Millie,Stella, Verosika)

-ableist language by Blitzo, refusal to acknowledge this and even joking about not being able to say a slur

-collaborates with Brandon Rogers,whose work is clearly sexist,racist,homophobic and ableist

-making fun of eating disorders (Moxxie)

-involving kesha in her show while she is trying to get justice for being abused and trying to recover, making the character she voices based on all the things she hated about herself

-included famous voice actors, pays thousands for them but actively underpaid and overworked her staff

-No trigger on an episode that contained Blitzo vomiting

-Barbie wire grooming a teenager is considered a joke (and the tweet doesn't count, we should be able to tell if the teen was actually older by his design or any line of dialogue, if those who don't have twitter won't know it means it's a problem)

-various incest jokes hinting at proshipping (Moxxie/Millie, and a rumor +dialogue cues hint at Andrealphus and Stella being in a relashionship)

-merch of almost all female characters being somewhat sexual

-depicting the Woman/Man as the only healthy relationship (Moxxie/Millie) while the queer couples are toxic (Chaz/Moxxie Blitzo/Stolas)

Holy shit that's a long read, I suggest you make that into a blog post or something. The only portion I can assume that you got correct is the third section. Most of the first two sections are spot on to me, but I am not sure if they're both completely correct because I'm not really aware of what Vivziepop did in the past, just what she has been doing since like last year. Sorry to disappoint, but it is pretty great from what I'm reading.

Modify it to what you think is best so that people will read from it and test read it yourself in case you got something wrong. I suggest you use Grammarly for grammar or spelling issues because even though English is my first language I still struggle with those

Majo your love for both nevermore and Castle swimmer is SO FUNNY bc it's literally every yaoi vs yuri stereotype where the boys are 💫 talking about their feelings 💫 and 💞 being emotionally vulnerable 💞 and 🥺 healing from their traumas 🥺 and the girls are trying to fuck nasty while covered in blood as someone screams into the distance

Castle Swimmer and Nevermore somehow both scratch such different itches for me yet simultaneously hit that perfect sweet spot that makes my mind go completely feral.

When it comes to the main couples, you really hit the nail on the head on their vibes and how they’ve dug themselves so deeply in my brain. Although there is clear conflict set up for Kappa and Siren that they will have to work through together in the rest of season three, these two are running CIRCLES, fucking marathons, around White Raven in terms of communication and stability. Meanwhile White Raven are in the middle of their messy, messy divorce, with Lenore having her joker moment during the public break up of their secret relationship while Annabel has a panic attack, all because Annabel didn’t seem to consider Lenore’s reaction if she found out Annabel trapped one her of closest companions behind a wall and left him to die. The two couples have such different vibes and yet both of them share that overwhelming devotion, wanting to do anything to keep the other safe. That despite everything the universe keeps throwing at them that stands in their way, they will keep on fighting for each other because they gave each other a new drive in life that they lost/didn’t have before. It’s all so *chief’s kiss*

Well…that and one humorous detail that I’ve suddenly realised while thinking/writing about this. While both Kappiren and White Raven are both equally smitten with their respective partners, their reactions to each other’s affection clearly differentiate.

Siren and Lenore, while they have their moments, are more easily flustered when it comes to respective partners. Kappa saying or doing the right things will get immediately get Siren completely red in the face and a utter mess, and Lenore is not better as soon as Annabel starts with her flirtations. The two of them are also very gentlemanly/princely in their affections for their partners, with the main example that comes to my mind being hand kisses.

Kappa and Annabel on the other hand…lord are they down bad and they are not shy about showing it. When it comes to Siren, Kappa is downright shameless with his flirting and will take any opportunity to see Siren blush. Two days into knowing him, Kappa told Siren that he thinks his teeth are sexy. He openly admits to Siren when he offers to give Kappa his bag back that, and I quote ‘I like that my stuff is strapped around your hot body’ without batting an eye, while Siren has a mini heart attack in the background. He knows exactly what he does to Siren and loves every minute of it. Then there’s Annabel, who despite coming up with the plan to pretend being rivals to divide the school, is FULLY ON blushing and basically moaning in PUBLIC when Lenore pins her against the walls, too focused on how hot she thinks her wife is getting properly into the role as enemies that she doesn’t that Lenore is genuinely fucking furious with her and is about to pull out the divorce papers and a gun. She saw Lenore in her ‘Leo Vandernacht’ fit and it immediately altered her brain chemistry. The girl will allow her hands to wander when she is alone with Lenore and she enjoys every second of it

Ceroba x Dina (Beer Yuri) Headcanons

Since I don't wanna just sit around liking and reblogging stuff, I figured I'd interact with the community more and start with some assorted headcanons.

I was gonna do some Corn Yaoi stuff, but since that's the main ship everyone talks about, I settled with another pairing of mine, Ceroba x Dina. 🤍 Ceroba and Dina had known each other since childhood. However, they were closer to acquaintances than straight up childhood friends. They didn't really start to get to know one another until adulthood.

🤍 Ceroba did consider asking Dina out once, but never went through with it. After Chujin, she came to the conclusion that she had her love and didn't really pursue any further relationships. It wasn't until post-Pacifist route that she decided to move on and went on a date with Dina.

🤍 Though it doesn't happen too often, Ceroba does end up getting really drunk from time to time. When this happens, Dina ends up taking her home and helps her nurse her hangover when she wakes up.

🤍 Dina herself is actually pretty good when it comes to firearms. Every now and then she spends a few hours on the shooting range honing her skills. Ceroba tags along sometimes, though it's usually just for company. Guns are not this fox's specialty at all. Dina has been trying to teach her, but she hasn't gotten too far.

🤍 I had this funny idea of Ceroba being the Saloon's unofficial bouncer. She'll pitch in to help calm down rowdy customers and (should diplomacy fail) throw 'em out. Dina usually rewards her with drinks on the house, along with a kiss on the cheek.

🤍 When it comes to sleep, Ceroba is usually always the big spoon. It was a force of habit when she was with Chujin and just kinda translated over to the next relationship. Dina herself doesn't mind in the slightest.

🤍 Every now and then, they like to go out on double dates with Dalv and Starlo. Yaoi and Yuri, perfectly balanced, as all things should be. That's all I got for now. If you guys wanna hear any specific scenarios, feel free to give me an ask!
