#yes alluka is trans a girl
Text
People not understanding that Alluka is a trans-girl makes me so ANNOYED.
Everyone is always bringing up every explanation of her gender EXCEPT for the one that is canon and makes most sense.
People are like “oh maybe the translation got mixed up thats why different characters refer to her as different genders.”
Tumblr media
People seem to come up with every possible explanation except the most obvious one. And it just makes me angry, not at the people who don’t understand Alluka’s gender but at the fact the Trans people have been erased so much that its the last thing most people with think of as a possibility.
And whenever there is finally a trans character everyone always tries to make reasons why the character isn’t trans. Its like if the writer doesn’t introduce the character with the literal words: “This character is trans.” People will ignore the blatant clues and try to convince themselves the character isn’t trans.

I can’t blame Illumi for trying to stop Nanika from saving Gon.
Like yeah that sounds bad but Illumi was like acting under the impression that the wish would kill the whole Zoldyck family and thousands of other lives.
Like without knowing that Killua can command and that Alluka doesn’t ask for something cruel after healing someone, I would also have been trying to stop Killua and Alluka!
I kinda feel like a little communication on Killuas part could have helped. I mean I get that he is scared that Illumi is gonna take control of Alluka but you can at least tell him that there won’t be any cost for saving Gon.

Jojolands 13: Ohana Means I'll Set Your Ass on Fire
Tumblr media
Dragona dropping some great truth about the absurd in this bizarre adventure. We finally got a peak behind that mask. I love it and I hate it, if you've read the chapter already you know what I mean. We'll get to that, because this right here isn't spoilery and it was such a cool nugget.
I love the way Dragona talks about the "absurd." Chance moments that alter one's life for better or for worse. The things that just don't make sense. Especially paired with Dragona opining about nearly losing their heart in the same chapter that last part about hearts being destroyed hits hard. I'm definitely sure we're looking at a trans narrative here and one we'll see play out. The chapter does a good job of implying what we need to know. Nudges at an early theory you've been changing your body with Smooth Operator. We ready? What follows is no place for beginners or sensitive hearts:
Tumblr media
Oh HELL yes! As if I needed a reason, these two were well on their way to top Jojo status and now the dynamic duo of the Joestar Siblings are definitely there. Mean girl sets her sights on a much more timid Dragona who we now know looked way more masculine at 14 than 18. Talking physical build and not just fashion. You know, I don't expect an 18yo to have all that figured out and with this I do think we'll see her keep coming into her own. But holy shit that was fucked up and I sincerely hope we can get through the rest of this with no more sexual assault on my Jojos blorbo.
If they do...Jodio will fuck you up. Set a whole damn bus on fire! And while I'm not looking forward to having to relive the impetus in the inevitable anime adaptation, since we've already had the cop I kinda like the perpetrator being a girl here. For one because it shows a side of this kind of bigotry that often goes underrepresented. You see a little more space made typically for trans men who had bad experiences with men prior to coming out, largely because it tends to overlap with those who found a comfortable half-step in something like a radical feminist group. But this sets up Dragona pretty well for a realistic other side of the coin to that. Your experiences with bullying might make you a little skittish of girls your age, you keep a foot in this criminal world even if we keep showing you (not unlike Okiku) as someone who doesn't fit super well, all this would certainly explain why you'd gravitate towards a figure like Meryl Mei. Why there's great potential for drama if she shows a nastier side. It's all great for a trans story that justifies still figuring yourself out through it...but sticks to a fairly realistic path for a lot of young women who find themselves running with gangs.
All that said, Jodio you absolute freak. Burning the whole bus is metal, it's scruffy, he's protecting family. Doooooope. These two are fantastic and I can't wait to explore their story, their dynamic more. Jodio & Dragona's sibling bond is the beating heart of this part. As much as I love Kiku/Izo & Killua/Alluka yeah this is gonna be a banger. Speaking of, this chapter was also the second time we nudged at Jodio getting shit for looking fey too. These two are ride or die for each other and their awesome mom Barbara Ann. How this all ties into their family falling apart and their desire to become filthy rich? No need to ask...
Tumblr media
In lighter news. They. When Meryl learns of the other lava rock that got smashed. We're all clear on who's the brains and who's the firepower in the dynamic duo right? I trust Meryl as far as I can throw her and she's a big lady. But for now everything seems on the up-and-up. Charmingman seems to have passed the sniff test and yeah it looks like he's just going to hang around. I like this new setup. Scouting a shadowy company to see if we can get more lava rock.
All in all one of the best chapters of Jojolands so far. I'm loving it, this is the exact direction I hoped it'd go. The backstory made this pretty heavy and I hope we can have more fun with this gang on the new excursion.

Mildly interesting to me that (from what of yours I've seen) there hasn't been much touching on the subject of Kite's gender. Idk I just think it'd be interesting given his status as (ft)mtftm.
The who what when where and why?????
I'm going to do my best to answer this, but I warn you I'm not all that familiar with the acronyms so forgive me for that.
If you're implying that Kite was trans before he got reincarnated, I've got no clue. Togashi wrote him as male, from my understanding, and he's addressed as so. There's not really an indication he's not, so I write him as male.
If you're implying about after he becomes the redheaded girl, then yes. I haven't written about that or really addressed it in my stories. Why, you may ask. It's not something I really plan to make a plot point. In other words, it's something I change in my stories. Whether it be the 'Kite Lives, or Chimera Ant AU'
Why change it?
Well, it's not because he turned into a girl. I love women. Supporter of women's rights and women's wrongs. It's because he turns into a child. It's just uncomfortable for me to write about romance between kids, if that makes sense. Like in MaS, our reader is twenty. Ain't no way I'm having a twenty year old romance a kid, even if it is Kite in there. It's just icky. Which is where the Chimera Ant AU comes in. I get to write a resolution that feels right and guarantees a happy ending.
If it's to do with a circulating theory, like why every other ant was reborn the same gender except Kite, then I've got nothing. Personally, I think it was just a way for Togashi to throw us off for the reveal that Kite was still alive. But people interpret characters and stories differently. We all have our own Headcannons we feel fit with them. And there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. It gives readers and writers alike more diversity.
Now, why don't I touch up on Kite's gender?
Because it's not something I worry about when I write. My stories can give insight on other characters or help my readers see the characters the way I do. What I focus on is the reader insert themselves. The actions they do and how it affects the relationships around them. The only gender I really focus on is the readers because I like to make sure my Headcannons and stories are accessible for most people to enjoy. Smut is another thing entirely I won't get into. Regardless, the way a character is presented is the way I write them.
Alluka? A girl.
Pitou? Them-because they're an ant.
Kite? A man.
I don't write with the intent to educate or rant. I write for fun. Something for entertainment, and something not to overanalyze or think too hard about. Gender isn't really a plot point of any of my stories, so of course I'm not gonna focus on it. I just don't really see the point to when there's more going on within the story
Again, smut is a little different. Those are thirsting hours and written with less thought, if that makes sense.
I just try to have a good time and hope my readers do as well.

you are my source of sonic and hxh so two questions 1) what is pitou and alluka's pronouns bc i see a lot of people debating that and 2) when the fuck did sonic die what the hell i thought it was a fake death
alluka is a trans girl if anyone argues with me im killing them and ripping them to shreds
pitou is a bit more difficult due to them only using 僕 (boku) to refer to themselves, which is a formal pronoun used most by boys (there are however cases of female characters using 僕) they are also referred to with あいつ、but that can be simply due to not being familiar with the pitou. it is, however, a gender neutral term. the anime decided to also give pitou breasts for some reason when it is not shown in the manga but whatever. i tend to use they/them for pitou regardless because they are,,,, very gender lmao and i know most people do tend to refer to them with they/them.
as for sonic dying im assuming you were talking about the murder of sonic the hedgehog the game that recently came out and yes in that game sonic is only knocked out basically sonic's death however is from sonic 06. the antagonist, mephiles the dark, was trying to cause princess elise to cry so that she would release the flames of disaster so that he could reunite with it and become solaris once again. his whole con was to have sonic and elise grow closer and then manipulate silver to kill sonic and cause elise to crack and breakdown. when silver ended up backing down, mephiles decided to kill sonic himself. this actually makes mephiles the only character to kill sonic in the game canon. (only for sonic to be resurrected and that timeline to be deleted from existence)

Tumblr media
I tend to see a lot of people say that Togashi will leave things uncertain and ambiguous in between Killua and Gon, and while it’s a possibility, I honestly don’t think it’s the most likely thing to happen, and if it did, ambiguous wouldn’t be the correct term to call it.
People often say that Togashi likes to play with ambiguity when it comes to queer matters. Yes, Togashi likes to play with gender. We get to see that through Kite, Pitou and Kalluto in HxH (although its arguable because Kite is definitely not cis). But when Togashi decides that a character is queer, or that there is a relationship going on between two characters, he doesn’t leave it ambiguous.
Togashi has created queer characters in 3 of his main works : Yu Yu Hakusho, Level E and Hunter x Hunter. And everytime he created those characters, he made damn sure that everyone knew that these characters were queer. No room for any sort of ambiguity.
The first examples I have are from Yu Yu Hakusho, with a character named Miyuki, and the other is from Level E, with a character named Kyoko Mikihisa.
For these two characters, Togashi made it so that they emphasized themselves that they were trans. It’s painted extremely clearly, that they were born in the wrong body. There’s literally no room for any sort of ambiguity here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Togashi could’ve easily kept things ambiguous. There are plenty of ways he could’ve done it, keeping the character’s gender confusing. But he didn’t. He made it EXTRA clear that these characters were trans. This is mostly why I genuinely don’t believe you can describe Togashi’s queer rep as “ambiguous”. Because when the characters tell you themselves that they are, it’s canon. It’s not ambiguous.
Now, sometimes, Togashi likes to play it more subtle. He doesn’t make his characters say “I’m gay” or “I’m trans”, but he finds another way to say it.
In YYH, Togashi wrote a gay character : Itsuki. And he’s canonically gay, because when talking about another man, Sensui, he mentions that he sees him as a lover.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s subtle. It’s not ambiguous.
Same thing for Alluka, Alluka never comes on screen and says “I’m a trans girl !”. The reason we know that Alluka is canonically a trans girl is because the Zoldycks insist on misgendering her, while Killua emphasizes that she’s a girl.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And once again, it’s subtle. Not ambiguous. Even though I’ve seen a lot of redditors say that “Alluka’s gender is ambiguous”, Togashi is literally doing his utmost to highlight subtly that yes, Alluka is a trans girl.
But subtlety is not canon’s enemy. Not everything has to be painted clearly for it to be canon. Sometimes, you just have to piece every little clue together yourself. Just because the word “trans” is never canonically stated in HxH concerning Alluka, it doesn’t make her any less of a trans girl. Because as the audience, we UNDERSTOOD from the subtext and from the clash in gendering that she is trans.
So, yes, Togashi likes to be subtle. But subtlety doesn’t make things any less canon.
I’m drifting a bit to non-queer matters, but I also want to talk about two relationships in Togashi’s work that were canonically romantic, but subtle.
The first is Meruem and Komugi. It’s canon that the nature of their relationship was romantic. They never did couple-y things, or even kissed. But it doesn’t make the nature of their relationship ambiguous. Because it was once again, subtle, but drowning in subtext that Togashi deliberately put there.
Tumblr media
Togashi paralleled Killua saying that him dying with Gon would be a shinjuu (lover’s suicide), only for it to not happen in the end - but Togashi wanted to throw that word in. So we could have it at the back of our heads. Because when Meruem and Komugi died, it was a shinjuu. It was two lovers dying by the same method with the belief that they’d be united in the afterlife. Meruem only cared about spending his last moments playing with Komugi. They both said that they were only born to experience this moment, of being in pure bliss as they die together. When Komugi replies to Meruem and says that she’ll join him in death, she uses an old phrasing used to accept marriages proposals. They died holding hands.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was subtle, but canon. Because of all these clues and all the subtext Togashi planted, it is undeniable that their relationship was romantic. And they never kissed, never said “i love you”, but we still know : and that’s the beauty of subtlety.
Because yes, romance can be subtle AND canon.
Another example of a canon romantic relationship that was never officialized by a kiss : Keiko and Yusuke in Yu Yu Hakusho. Correct me if I’m wrong, but while they kissed in the anime, they never kiss in the manga.
But a relationship doesn’t need to be canonized by a kiss. I’ve never seen/read YYH, but while I was doing research, I read that their relationship grew naturally over the course of the manga. That they grew together, were affectionate with each other, but never told each other the nature of their feelings. Until one specific moment towards the end of the manga where this happens:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
All of this came naturally. No big confession, just a confirmation of what they both felt. And no kiss either ! No hand holding, no true “romantic” actions, either before or after that chapter. Just feelings. I’m quoting one of the post I used as reference, but “On one hand it's beautiful to finally hear it, but on the other, it's not even surprising. You find yourself caught off guard by how easily you're willing to accept that these two have felt this way throughout the entire series.”
And while it’s subtle, because you’d expect at least a kiss or something, it’s canon and undeniable that their relationship is romantic. It’s clear that the two of them are in love, even if they never kissed. Because it was clear from the beginning that this was where their relationship was going : all the building up to that one moment where they both basically tell each other “oh yeah, btw, i love you”. A simple confirmation of what they both knew, and of what we as readers knew too.
I guess my point is that Togashi can insist on the nature of his characters and relationships. He insisted that Miyuki, Mikihisa and Alluka were trans. But sometimes he also likes to be subtle, and not put everything plainly. But the subtlety doesn’t discredit its the canon legitimacy.
Now, onto what it means for Killua and Gon.
I emphasized that Togashi liked to highlight when his characters are queer. There are absolutely NO DOUBTS that Miyuki and Alluka are trans girls, Mikihisa a trans man and that Itsuki was gay. It’s in canon. But they were all brought up differently, and it was either confirmed by them saying it themselves or by the context and subtext surrounding their queer identity.
But Togashi never left it ambiguous. We always had canon confirmation that they were queer. What I’m saying is, there’s a very, very high probability that Killua is gay and in love with Gon. We’ve seen it in the incredible amount of subtext deliberately placed by Togashi. And like I said, Togashi never left the nature of his queer characters ambiguous. So it’s highly likely that Togashi will confirm in canon at some point that Killua is gay.
Now, while it’s likely Togashi will canonize Killua being queer plainly by either him saying it or subtext (just like Alluka), it doesn’t mean that his relationship with Gon will be canonized plainly too.
I mentioned earlier that Komugi/Meruem and Keiko/Yusuke’s relationships were subtle, while undeniably romantic. So maybe this will be the case for Killua and Gon’s relationship too. It looks like Togashi’s style for writing romance is show, not tell, thus making it a possibility that it’ll be the same for Killua and Gon.
But I can assert with 100% certainty that Togashi will NOT leave their relationship ambiguous. Maybe it’ll be subtle, but NOT ambiguous. Just like Meruem/Komugi and Yusuke/Keiko.
Killua and Gon’s relationship is the backbone of HxH, and it’s very clear that Togashi’s intent from the beginning of the story was to canonize it as a love story. When Togashi wrote Killua, he incorporated elements of Tanabata, a legend about two lovers, in his story, and made Tanabata his birthday. Togashi queer coded Killua from the beginning, and I honestly doubt that he would never canonize it, when it was his intent to queer code him from the beginning. He made the both of them have an extremely deep relationship, being each other’s most important person. Combine this with all the subtext, and yeah, it’s pretty clear that HxH is a love story.
So yes, Togashi wouldn’t leave ambiguous something he planned from the beginning of the story. Especially since HxH is his first chance at writing a manga and being able to do everything he wants with it. Especially when Togashi’s gay manga got turned down 30 years ago.
Tumblr media
I mentioned Togashi never leaving stuff ambiguous, but rather either putting it plainly or more subtly. And honestly, I’m thinking it’s going to be a mix of both for Killua and Gon. A mix of subtlety and undeniable proof of the romantic nature of their relationship. Exactly like Yusuke and Keiko’s relationship.
I feel like Killua and Gon’s relationship perfectly mirrors Yusuke and Keiko’s, and I can totally picture it following the same patterns. By having their relationship grow even deeper as they reunite, with no explicit romantic gestures, just deep, deep feelings. Until ultimately, they both confirm it one way or another.
I could literally picture Gon turning to Killua, telling him out of the blue something they’ll do when they get married, Killua being confused but Gon saying something like “Well, I wanna get married to you Killua. Don’t you want to?” and Killua almost choking but saying that yeah, he’d like that. Plain and simple. No romantic gesture. No kiss, no hand holding, no feelings confession under the stars. Just a mutual assessment of what they both already knew.
But honestly, I’m saying all this to try and be objective, but I’m not in Togashi’s head. Togashi could also very much go absolutely crazy and make Killua and Gon share a kiss, hold hands, affirm their love out loud, Because it’s his first chance at being free to do what he wants with his manga. And because he’s been wanting to draw a gay manga for a while, he might want to emphasize that HxH is queer.
Especially when it seems like Togashi likes to incorporate shoujo elements in his work.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And as @/sincerelysamedt mentioned in her wonderful post, queer relationships are often dismissed as platonic in media, and that it’s important to overplay it to canonize it efficiently. And Togashi is probably aware of this. Hence Killua’s stuttering, blushing, the constant gay poetic lines Gon tells Killua about how he’s so glad he met him, Killua’s inner monologues comparing Gon to light itself, multiple characters highlighting their mutual love, a date under the stars where they mutually affirm their want to stay together and travel the world while they both blush.........Togashi didn’t have to go THIS hard, but he did.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
These panels highlight the difference between the subtle relationships I talked about above. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think Togashi represented Yusuke or Keiko having internal monologues about how they wanted to stay with the other forever or poetically comparing each other to light. It proves that while Togashi likes to play it subtle, he's also not afraid to put extremely cliché shoujo tropes and heartfelt moments in his narrative too. Maybe he’s aware that internalized homophobia might pose a problem to the narrative he’s trying to convey, and thus he might be enclined to overplay it.
When you keep in mind that Togashi most likely wrote Killua and Gon with the intent of making their relationship a love story, you can see that he’s never really written with the intent of being ambiguous or even subtle, providing us with multiple intense scenes of mutual devotion. And that’s one thing that’s leading me to believe he wouldn’t shy away from delivering highly emotional scenes that would canonize their mutual love. Because their relationship has never truly been portrayed as subtle, or ambiguous, it’s just.... developing.
So yeah, it could go either way ! Either Togashi will decide to paint it subtly like every relationship he’s painted in the past, or he’ll either decide to go all out and maybe show us an extremely heartfelt confession under the stars, maybe even an on-screen kiss (the latter option being highly likely considering all the very emotional scenes between them we’ve already had) - (EDIT : i wrote a post on why i believe there’ll be an explicit confession if you want to read it !)
But one thing is certain : it will never stay ambiguous, because Togashi has never painted any of his queer characters or the relationships between his characters as ambiguous, Subtle, yes. Ambiguous, no.

hiya !! I really liked your Killua with a ftm s/o writing, so can I request gon and Killua with a reader who they just found out was trans? like they always just assumed reader was a cis male.
Yes of course! Thank you for being my first request ever! If this doesn’t turn out how you want feel free to tell me and I’ll change it! I wrote reader as having a purely platonic relationship so if that’s not what you wanted I’d be happy to rewrite it. ————————————
You were out for lunch with Killua and Gon, as you did weekly, but you had something you really needed to tell them. You were quite nervous about coming out to them, but you knew it was something you should tell them. They were your best friends, after all.
So, you pulled them to the side, remarking that there was something you needed to tell them. “Killua, Gon, I need to tell you that…I’m transgender. I was born a girl and I transitioned into a boy.” You said with a sigh, worrying they wouldn’t accept you. “So? You’re still a boy! And you’re my friend either way!” Gon said happily, hugging you. “You’re still our friend Y/N. Being trans doesn’t change anything. You’re a boy and you’re our best friend. We would’t stop being your friend because of that.” Killua added to the conversation, smiling warmly. After that, they were much more open to you, even if you had only been friends for a few weeks. Killua introduced you to his sister, who regarded you as her second brother. You started calling her your little sister in response to that. Killua and Gon then became the trans person protection squad for you and Alluka. Honestly, it felt good to know they accepted you and were your friends and ‘little sister’ even if you didn’t identify with the gender you were assigned at birth. ————————————-
I hope you liked this! Thanks again for being my first request, it means a lot to me!

Umm can I request directors commentary for literally any Leopika fic you’ve written??? Love your stuff!
❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥
ahhahaha thank you so much! yes, absolutely! this is going to be long, because i have decided to do that scene in light of my life, pain of my ass. beware LONG BULLSHIT and spoilers below the cut!
ok to set the scene. i was TERRIFIED to write this part. because this is the climax, you know? we've had 150k words of build-up and emotional tension to this scene. while this has been a romantic story, this is the actual climax of the story. we've spent all this time in kurapika's head as he's dealt with his anxiety, his need for control, his fear of letting go. how he's changed as he's opened up his heart and his life to people outside. and finally he's actually working through all of his emotions and the progress he's made out loud, in front of everyone. and because he forgot about giving his speech until like five minutes before (sorry, kp), he is forced to speak from the heart.
For five agonizing seconds, Kurapika stood alone in the middle of a silent room. Above him, the string lights coalesced into a single shared point of soft white light that illuminated his space.
i so wish this could be adapted to, like, netflix or made into a movie. i put so much into this imagery. the play on light? the cinnamon topography? *chef's kiss* yes please netflix CALL ME.
Everyone in his life was staring at him expectantly, Pairo and Altair and Gon and Killua and Nanika and Alluka and Kalluto and his parents. And approximately a hundred other people on top of that, extended family on both sides, industry insiders, coworkers. All staring at him and waiting for him to say something amazing and powerful and deep about love and what did Kurapika know about love, anyway? He was a thirty-two year old trans man so terrified of his own emotions, so paralyzed by his fear of loss, that he did not figure out he was in love with his best friend until three weeks ago.
this is me screwing the knife in deeper for poor kurapika, sorry. this is so incredibly horrifying for a person with anxiety, as someone with anxiety. behold, the terrifying ordeal of being known.
Five seconds. Kurapika finally found Leorio standing near the back, leaning against the bar. He wondered if Leorio picked the same spot where they sat together the very first time they came here on purpose. Leorio sent him a wink and a thumbs-up.
the terrifying ordeal of being known and being so, so loved anyway. it was great to write in a way that showed leorio realized he was in love with kurapika first (indeed, realized that kurapika was in love with him before kurapika knew himself), because these little interactions shows so much how leorio is inviting and allowing kurapika to come to him on his own time. and supporting him the whole way, because they are friends!!!!
Breathe, Kurapika thought. Just breathe. It’s going to be okay.
this statement was not supposed to be a running theme/motif, but i'm super glad it did! i wrote it as a one-off line for melody, but then i was like, hang on, that's kinda good? every other time i write i'm like, hey, you could make a theme out of this!
“Um,” Kurapika started, his voice cracking. Christ, he sounded seventeen again. He cleared his throat.
my friends told me about how their voices changed and dropped on T. any trans person is stronger and more powerful than any us marine.
“For those of you who may not know, I’m Pairo’s brother. Kurapika. His older one, just to be clear.”
this is definitely something that has happened like a hundred times.
There was a smattering of chuckles around the room. He twisted to look at Pairo. “I’ve known Pairo since he was a toddler dragging a ragged, threadbare T-Rex plushie around behind him. I was there when he read his first chapter book on his own – Dino Hunter, of course – because he came bursting into my room at two o’clock in the morning to tell me about it.” Another round of laughter. “I was there when he got his first notebook, when he won his first writing contest, when he was published in his first magazine. I was the first person he told about liking boys instead of girls. I’ve watched him grow and learn and fall in love. And now Altair is part of our family, too.”
pairo and kurapika's lives as brothers were amazing. dino hunter is a reference to the book they both read in the manga that led to kurapika wanting to leave the kurta and explore the world.
i also thought that writing fit pairo well because it's a pretty accessible career for his eyes. he could type, he could enhance the screen and font when he needed, and he could do talk-to-type. one day i want to write a side-story of when pairo and altair met, because i have it perfectly formulated in my head and it's adorable.
Kurapika took a deep breath, tucking a lock of hair behind his ear. He confessed, “To be perfectly honest, I was scared when Pairo asked me to do this, because I’ve run out of things to teach him. He’s run on ahead of me in life. Settled down, moved in with his boyfriend – now husband, congratulations on that by the way – and gotten married, while I’m perpetually single and living alone in my loft apartment with an absolutely spoiled monster of a cat. Stop laughing, that wasn’t supposed to be a joke.”
emperor the cat was also not intended to be a character. i came up with him like, right before i started writing the chapter.
i think it was hard for kurapika to watch his brother fall in love and move on ahead in life. even if he was genuinely happy for them both. i had a conversation with a coworker a few months ago where we both talked about how we feel like we are "behind," even though we're both very accomplished. she felt like she was "behind" because i have a master's degree; i felt like i was "behind" because she was happily married and already had a child on the way (who is here and beautiful and perfect). and i imagine kurapika wondered if he was falling behind or missing something when he saw his brother succeed in love and business without really trying.
but there's no competition at all, of course. the world spins on, and we grow and change and find our place in our own time. there's no race.
The room quieted again. Kurapika went on, his eyes flicking over the crowd. He was starting to smile, too, now.
he's starting to realize this is okay, he's not going to mess up, he may actually have something worthwhile to say or share. he's getting more comfortable in all this.
“But I’m also a wedding planner – I know, ironic – and I’ve learned a lot about love from my clients. So if you’ll indulge me, I’d like to share some of those lessons now.”
No one from the back shouted at him to shut the fuck up, that he didn’t have a single clue what he was talking about, so he thought he was safe to carry on.
how funny would that have been??? like, it would have been fucked-up and humiliating, but in any other situation?? hilarious. just killua looking like that dude in mean girls being like HE DOESN'T EVEN GO HERE except it's like HE DOESN'T EVEN KNOW WHAT LOVE IS.
He thought back to Light of My Life’s various couples, musing over their own rocky paths to the altar and the beautiful, fractured glimpses into their lives they gifted Kurapika and his team. What did they teach him? What did they teach his heart, that terrifying, terrified lump of meat frantically beating in his chest?
More than you think, his heart seemed to be telling him. Trust me; I will guide you through this. Trust me, trust me, trust me.
*"listen to your heart" plays in the background*
also like. trusting oneself and your perceptions and your feelings and your heart is so necessary. it's an important part of healing. and being honest with yourself and your feelings is part of a foundation for all healthy relationships, i think.
also i really like writing alliteratively. the play on words with "terrifying, terrified" was. inspired? terrifying, because kurapika for a long time feared his own heart and feelings, viewing them as a loss of control; and terrified, because his heart is afraid, too. and they are taking this leap together!
And Kurapika explained: “Love isn’t just found in eloquent professions or grand, romantic gestures. It’s supporting each other through your lowest, worst moments and coming out the other side stronger for it. It’s standing together, hand in hand, against the world. It’s in looking at someone simply existing in the world and seeing them as they are: good, beautiful, strong, intelligent, kind. It’s in your communication and your foundation and trusting that all good things will come together in time. It’s in the family that you build together. It’s in the work you each put in to get through the hard times. Together.”
me: yeah uh-huh jj you really did summarize the fic so far.
this is also where i started being sappy and thinking about love. friendly and romantic love. the love i've seen in my friends, the love i feel myself in my relationships.
There. That’s what his clients taught him. Menchi and Buhara; Morena and Theta; Pokkle and Ponzu; Knov and Morel; Knuckle and Shoot; Canary and Amane. But so many more people showed him what love was. He pictured Pairo and Altair on his couch, laughing at him and judging him and helping him put his own puzzle-piece heart together into something cohesive and beautiful. He smiled at his brothers and saw the way they were clutching each others hands, mouths beaming and eyes dewy.
they LOVE their brother so MUCH. their view of the outside looking in for the past year, watching kurapika fall in love, go soft, be happier than they've ever seen him.
He told them, “It’s in the way you can communicate in gestures and looks, and sometimes, without looking at all. It’s in banter and private jokes and finishing each other’s sentences. It’s in casual touches and... pouring their coffee before your own.”
my coffee is never as good as when my partner makes it. my honey-lemon tea is never as good as it is when my partner makes it. my jokes are never as funny as they are when my partner and i finish each other's sentences, build off of each other's quips. we can communicate across rooms with nothing but a look. these little signs of love are everywhere and expressed in so many tiny ways. these examples here are between people in romantic relationships, but these apply to platonic friendships as well.
His eyes swept the room and found Killua and Gon. Gon had his camera hefted onto one shoulder, and Killua stood behind him, arms around his waist and chin on his shoulder. “It’s on the first day you wake up and realize the way you look at the world has changed. The way you open your hands and your heart and give what you have, simply for the joy of being received.”
to love? transcendent. to be loved? incandescent. to love and know that it is valued and cherished and requited?
and this was a callback to killua talking about, of course, how he fell in love with gon like melting ice. like sinking into a bath. and this was also a quieter callback to how gon fell in love. because it wasn't just that he had/has so much love to give, but because for the first time in his life, he got to see it truly received. accepted.
Kurapika saw Killua’s breath catch and Gon’s hand flex over the fingers interlaced over his middle. Heedless of their surroundings and of the running camera, Gon twisted to kiss Killua on the mouth.
SMOOCHES ahahaha!
He turned his head back to Leorio. The man had not moved; indeed, he looked like he was nailed to the floor. His eyes were so intense as they watched him that Kurapika was almost surprised he had not yet burst into flame. Kurapika said, “It’s in the moment you see someone you’ve never met before, but you look at them and just know, to your core, that this is really going to be something.”
leorio realizing something is happening here. something huge is about to happen, is about to change. and he's trying so hard not to dare to hope it might be good. it might be everything.
A chorus of oohs went around the room. Even from this distance Kurapika saw the way Leorio’s face went red, and he ducked his chin, looking bashful and embarrassed.
leorio: holy shit holy shit holy SHIT IT'S HAPPENINGGGG
How was I such a fool before, Kurapika wondered, How was I so blind, so willfully ignorant and oblivious. How did it take me so long to realize you were talking about me. I’m sorry it took me so long to get here. I’m sorry I made you wait for so long.
this is important because it's not just kurapika realizing and accepting his feelings for leorio. this is kurapika's version of realizing that leorio feels the same for him. leorio is in love with him, too. and he's wondering how it was possible he was so scared and blind for so long. he fears he may have hurt leorio by holding off on this for so long, so he wants to be brave, take the leap, and see what they could be.
Kurapika did not want this man to wait another second. He did not want Leorio to spend another moment trapped in this limbo. So he confessed in the middle of a silent room in front of over a hundred people, “It's the first time you hear them laugh, and your entire world’s axis shifts beneath your feet.”
i remember the first time i met my partner. i remember the first time i looked at them and felt my world shift a little to the right. i remember falling in love and thinking that this one was unlike all the others. it was warm, golden, comforting.
Kurapika watched the confused frown on Leorio’s face when he heard that, amused by the almost puppyish tilt to his head as he considered it. He knew the moment Leorio realized what he meant when his eyes blew wide, amazed and awed and achingly soft. His lips parted.
gOD he is so CUTE. he's like oh hmm huh what does that mean
and then he remembers
i promise, he's not a huge dickwad!
and leorio laughing at gon's accidental gaffe and his sweet earnestness. and kurapika walking in. leorio realizing kurapika wanted to know him before they ever even met.
Kurapika made himself turn away from the arresting sight. “One of my favorite venues lately was the Roseview Ballroom downtown. Among its many beautiful, gaudy attractions are its murals depicting scenes from Shakespeare’s plays all across the ceiling. One is a famous quote from Twelfth Night: ‘journeys end in lovers meeting, every wise man’s son doth know.’ But the more I think about it, the less I agree.”
i'm such a WHORE for shakespeare, as any readers of mine will know. check out my modern college adaptation of much ado about nothing.
He turned to meet Pairo’s eyes again, repeating, “‘Journeys end in lovers meeting.’ But nothing is ending here. It’s just changing.”
life does not end when we start relationships! or when they end! or when we move, change jobs, graduate, go to school, drop out of school. happy endings in stories still aren't endings. the greatest constant in life is change.
“Because what I’ve learned in this job, Pairo and Altair, what nugget of wisdom I have to give you, is this. Love is looking at a world that can be terrifying, cold, capricious, and indifferent, and finding the person whose hand you want to hold through it all anyway. Because you want every laugh, every tear, every wrinkle, every spark of joy. Love is life’s greatest leap of faith, because you don’t know what’s going to happen tomorrow. But you know exactly who you want to spend all those tomorrows with.”
me finishing this: dammit i just wrote out my wedding vows.
Kurapika looked around the room again. At Gon and Killua; at Kalluto, Nanika, and Alluka; at his parents; at his brothers. At Leorio.
He concluded, “So you simply breathe. And you trust it will be okay.”
There wasn’t a dry eye in the room when Kurapika dropped the microphone.
DAMN ME TOO THIS SHIT WAS GOOD TF?????? sorry my writing has peaked here.

Do you think KiriBaku has a chance of heppening? In terms of representation it’d be amazing. Also in terms of story and development it just makes sense. And with the movie it just seems like it’s set up as a romantic thing. But the target demographic for BNHA is still mainly straight men. And anime has a history of being very homophobic. I’ve seen way to many men drop the series after they found out just Tiger and Magne were Trans. And that Toga may be bi/pan. Even if Hori wanted to, could he?
Oh, boy. Long post ahead, because I’m gonna be talking a lot.
Before I start, though, here’s a similar ask answered by @red-riot-kirishima-eijirou, and another detailed ask with statistics on LGBT in Japanese society over here answered by @unbreakable-red-riot and @aitaikimochi.
Short answer: Yes, I do think it’s possible, but probably in the final few chapters of the series when it’s 100% certain that BNHA can’t get the backlash needed from homophobic readers for Weekly Shounen Jump to axe it (logic: even if people complain, it’s stupid to cancel or condemn an insanely popular series that’s about to end in five or less chapters anyway).
Everything you said in terms of story and development for their relationship is true. KiriBaku has a chance. If it does become canon, it certainly won’t be via a kiss or a wedding scene– most shounen don’t even show those between their main het pairings. But it could be subtle, like the two of them wearing rings, or living together, working together, blushing/smiling softly in a Knowing Way when they look at each other, etc.
Long answer: All of the above, but with these things in mind.
The thing about LGBT in shounen manga is that it rarely happens, and most of the times it does happen, it’s not in a positive light. Even with BNHA’s LGBT characters, half of them are serial killers (Magne (trans) and Toga (bi/pan), as opposed to Tiger (trans) and Thirteen (nb), who are heroes.)
Kirishima’s gay-coding is absolutely present, as seen in @blackdeku‘s amazing and detailed slideshow with pertinent evidence, but since he’s never said anything explicit about it on screen, people brush it off and assume he’s straight so they can ship him with girls (especially Ashido, which… irks me, to say the least).
The only shounen manga I’ve seen that has positive LGBT representation is  Hunter x Hunter– positive trans rep with Alluka. However… even Hunter x Hunter has it’s bad side when it comes to LGBT. You know Hisoka? He’s a p*dophilic serial killer who preys on young boys and once nonchalantly asked if he could r*pe one of the 12-year-old protagonists as a joke.
Tumblr media
Yikes.
So clearly, the shounen genre is really not the best place for wholesome all-around LGBT rep, even amongst the best manga that truly does aim to provide good representation. Horikoshi has tried and managed to deliver on some (small) level, but as for a healthy relationship between two boys or two girls where neither are psychotic stalker-y murderous villains, I really don’t know.
It feels like it’ll be years before Japanese society will be totally accepting of seeing healthy, non-subtexty LGBT relationships in mainstream media like WSJ manga. (That’s just me being negative, though.)
While I’ve done some research, I’m by no means an expert, so please correct me if anything re LGBT in Japan here is inaccurate.
I won’t go too far into the past, but once Japan reshaped itself around the Meiji era using certain European countries as a model, it also adopted the homophobic aspects of European society (previously, it was much more lax.). Now, discussion and acceptance of LGBT people are slowly growing once more.
Tumblr media
Progress has been made in several different areas over the past few years. School dress codes have been altered in some schools to help LGBT and genderqueer students.
More LGBT content creators are able to write LGBT manga, such as My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness, My Brother’s Husband, and Shimanami Tasogare, the latter of which is written by Yuhki Kamatani, an agender asexual author who also wrote the shounen manga Nabari no Ou, which features a relationship between the (presumably LGBT) protagonist and an intersex main character.
Tumblr media
More people are able to speak out and condemn homophobic behavior, as shown in this extremely insightful and in-depth article by ANN.
Unfortunately, homophobia and heteronormativity are still things (for example,  (one of?) the Japanese words for “straight” is the English word “normal” written in katakana.).
Now, onto specifics: Weekly Shounen Jump.
Tumblr media
The manga they publish is… a lot of the time pretty sexist. There’s a lot of objectifying women in their series, and this reflects how sexist Japanese society is, too. (reminder of the recent Tokyo Medical University scandal, as well as workplace harassment/discrimination against women for “only working temporarily” because it is assumed they will ditch their jobs once they marry or get pregnant.)
We have Yuragi-sou no Yuuna-san, a borderline-hentai that caused a serious controversy earlier into its run. (I skimmed a few chapters once to see if the sexualization in-series was as bad as the color spread that started the controversy– DO NOT read it. It’s basically s0ft//core p/0rn.) There’s Food Wars. Strawberry 100%. To-LOVE-Ru.
More popular series like Naruto, Bleach, Black Clover, Fairy Tail, even critically acclaimed series like One Piece and Dragon Ball… they aren’t ecchi, but they do have fanservice and a lot of their female characters don’t get much chance to shine the same way male characters do. A lot of them fight, yeah, but a good majority of their purpose can range from having big boobs, acting motherly, and having crushes on/wanting to marry male characters, if not just blatantly existing to scream and have their sexy outfits ripped off in revealing ways.
Tumblr media
This plus shounen manga’s generally negative portrayal of LGBT people (see the okama transgender stereotype, p*dophilic villains like Hisoka, and general disgust that most shounen characters show upon the suggestion of romantic same-sex attraction, played for comedy) basically instills aversity to LGBT relationships among readers, especially younger ones.
That being said: WSJ’s target demographic is young boys aged 8-14. These kids are at an impressionable age, and most of the series they read objectify women and vilify LGBT people. (BNHA is no exception to this, no matter how much I love the series.) Most of these boys are straight as well.
So you have young straight boys who are used to seeing women treated like objects both in manga and real life, and are used to seeing LGBT people as disgusting deviants in manga as well.
Taking everything I said into mind, it’s highly likely that if KiriBaku were to become canon now or in a future arc that isn’t the finale of the series, there WILL be controversy, especially because BNHA is a popular manga with an anime that airs on primetime evening television with millions of viewers each week.
Whether or not people would react positively is another thing, but in the absolute worst-case scenario (which is still pretty highly unlikely), it could eventually be run out of WSJ magazine and even get the anime changed if homophobic readers/viewers are persistent enough. Hence why it needs to wait. That’s why I think the only chance BNHA has to get in good LGBT rep with KiriBaku is to play it safe and have it at the end of the series.
This took a more negative slant, and I’m sure there are things about Japanese society and its relation to the LGBT community that I may have misinterpreted or gotten flat-out wrong. But all of that aside…
There is a chance. It’s a slim one, but it does still exist.
And if Horikoshi truly does care about LGBT people, he can do it.

The Alluka situation confused me greatly bc the subs keep switching pronouns & words for her and I was like did they just translate badly (bc I know some other languages have the male version also be the neutral version of words, so if you try to translate smth you might end up doing a misgendering for female characters when you actually just meant to use a neutral word), but -according to the wikia- *clears throat*:
-Alluka is listed as female, & uses female pronouns
-Alluka’s sex is listed as male, in the trivia section, including the note that she is probably trans bc of this (yes honey that would mean that, you don’t need to speculate at that point)
-> which means that while she seems to be allowed to live as a girl by her family/parents, including clothes etc, as far as I can tell, most of her family (excluding Killua) keep misgendering her (unless they’re straight-up referring to her as “it” bc of the demon baby that she is (LOOKING AT U SILVA)), but there’s at no point (so far, I’m at ep 139) been any kind of clarification of why in the hel they’re switching between pronouns, like if you’re gonna make this character trans at least mention SOMETHING about that so we aren’t sitting here like ‘did they translate things wrong? how does japanese do gendering? do they have pronouns as such? do they have the same word for brother & sibling? I am very confused’
I don’t even care if you wanna write a trans character being misgendered, that’s part of the experience, it’s fine to represent that, but the constant switching between pronouns is so annoying omg, just pick one, this has nothing to do with the story at hand

She’s a kid so there aren’t many characters withing age that i could ship with her + she isnt seen interact with many characters outside the zoldyck family and gon. Ive seen people ship her with Zushi, I think its cute but im not that much into it.
non romantic otp She and her brother!! Because they love each other so much!!
i dont know, unpopular opinions... but there are still people who dont think she is a trans girl so yeah, shes a trans girl
I really wish she, killua and gon got back together again and you know what I want Leorio to adopt her. Can Leorio adopt her? I say yes.

I know its a big debate but I am not a dudebro for thinking killua and gon are platonic. I have no problem with people who do at all, but I honestly just think they have a strong friendship, and I am for encouraging boys to have these types of bonds with each other ~screw toxic masculinity~ I like following your blog btw
Hi ! First of all, thank you for liking my blog! I’m glad you’re enjoying my content even though I’m killugon trash HAHAH
Oh lord, it really is a big debate. I’m not calling everyone who doesnt like a romantic reading of killugon a dudebro, only the people who are vehemently against it because they say people are projecting and that there is no basis to our claims that hxh is queer work.
This is gonna be me ranting for a bit because it’s a subject that’s very dear to me so i’m very sorry in advance, it’s not against you, just a general statement !
I totally agree that fuck toxic masculinity. It’s so fucking toxic and men should be allowed to show emotions, affection and care openly without fearing for repercussions. And having portrayals of friendships where the characters are not afraid of sharing their love with the other in a totally platonic way is amazing.
However.
There’s been countless representations of this type of relationship in media over the years. In every media, not only anime. I always cite the same example, but take Naruto who is the example that speaks to me the most. (ive never seen it so dont flame me if i say dumb shit). But from my understanding, Naruto and Sasuke’s relationship was a full on middle finger in the face of toxic masculinity. They shared a deep bond, pretty much like Killua and Gon’s. I know a lot of people shipped them because their relationship was borderline homoerotic, but in the end it was just a beautiful representation of a very deep platonic friendship.
And when you’re queer, it’s heartbreaking. Because you’ve been projecting this entire time, for the work to tease you, to literally bait you into showing you inherent queer behavior only for it to say “haha lol jk” at the end is fucking rough. Especially when you’re young and questioning your sexuality, looking at relationships between two best friends and thinking “oh, this feels like I feel when I’m with my best friend, is this romantic love?” and then the work saying nope haha its purely platonic ! its rough. trust me.
The community doesn’t have a lot of positive, healthy queer relationships to identify with. Especially in anime. Most queer relationships are labeled under the special genres “shounen ai” and “yuri” (both of these categories painting queer relationships in the worst possible ways ever btw, but thats a whole other subject). But it’s fucking sad. Because we deserve to see queer representation in works that are not classified as those genre. We shouldn’t have to dig into a particular genre to identify with characters : there should be queer representation no matter the genre, whether it be a shoujo, a seinen, or for example, a shounen battle manga.
And that’s why HxH is so important to the queer community. Because it displays just that. That you can have good queer representation in non shounen-ai genres. That queer relationships are normal and should not have to be classified under a certain category.
A lot of queer people identify and recognize HxH as queer work, because of a few reasons. Togashi has always been interested in queer representation, having put queer characters in every single one of his works. There was a trans girl in YYH, a trans man in Level E, Alluka in HxH. Togashi also wrote several gay characters in both of these works. I always repeat myself on this, but Togashi also wanted to write a gay sports manga, but was turned down. His favorite manga when he was younger was a shounen-ai. So yes, Togashi has deep history and is very involved in queer representation.
Togashi is also very fucking smart. Just look at all the metas people are producing every day about hxh and understand how much effort togashi has put into his work : he’s a smart man, who makes conscious choices about everything he puts in his manga. So when you see the way he portrayed Killua and Gon’s relationship, and for now most importantly Killua, you know it’s not accidental. Togashi has put SO much subtext in his work about Killua in general, from his birthday being Tanabata to him wanting to commit a lovers’ suicide with Gon, and Togashi KNOWS how it comes across, he’s not dumb. He knows what those things mean, he knows that a shinjuu is a heavily connotated word, and that people, ESPECIALLY JAPANESE PEOPLE who have the cultural context, are gonna think “oh, maybe Killua is gay”. Because that subtext is intentional. And there’s a lot of it. If you haven’t read my post on the subtext of HxH, I invite you to do so because there’s a LOT of it.
In short, HxH has the subtext, has the potential and has the one author that is not afraid of putting queer stuff in his work. That’s why Killugon is so important to the community, and that’s why a lot of people, especially queer folks, insist on the romantic reading of their relationship.
Because it’s extremely important to queer people. Positive representation of queer relationships in anime is hard to come by, ESPECIALLY in the shounen genre. And sadly, because our society is drowning in deep internalized homophobia, people easily dismiss queer behavior in media as platonic actions.
How many times have I seen people assess that two people of opposite genders in an anime are in love only because they looked at each other once (take Ponzu and Pokkle for example). Or because they held hands. Our society is so quick to romanticize interactions between two people of different genders, but fail to do the same when it’s same-gender pairings.
Straight people hand holding, kissing, blushing around each other, admitting their love out loud, looking at each other’s eyes deeply are immediately categorized as in love. But when it’s people of the same gender, people immediately say “it can be platonic”. And whether you’re aware of it or not, that’s internalized homophobia.
That’s why it’s infuriating to see people dismiss the subtext that Togashi has tried SO HARD to plant throughout his story. Because it’s there, and if Killua was a girl, there’d be way less people opposed to a romantic reading of their relationship. Because it’d be widely accepted that Togashi is writing them as a developing couple, no questions asked.
Which brings me to my final point (promise, I’ll stop ranting after this). Sadly, the voices of the people who assert a platonic reading of a relationship are often louder than the voices of queer people who identify with the work. When confronted with an ambiguous relationship between a same-gender pairing, people unconsciously tend to choose a platonic reading of the relationship. Which is harmful to the queer community, because the voices of the queer people who identify with the work are silenced.
In conclusion, yes, representations of deep platonic friendships without toxic masculinity are good, and very much encouraged. We’ve just had a shitton of those over the years, and queer people are craving for proper representation. Togashi is deeply invested in positive queer representation, has planted a lot of conscious subtext in HxH, and he’s the one author that would NOT queerbait. So people being insistent that Killua is pretty much canonically gay, and that it’s likely that Killugon will be a romantic pairing is not for the sake of mindless shipping. It’s because there are a lot of reasons to believe that this is Togashi’s intention.
And like I said, sadly, people insisting on a platonic reading of their relationship is unintentionally harmful to the queer community, because people are so quick to dismiss elements that make queer people identify with the work as platonic behavior, dismissing queer people as “wishful shippers”.
There are plenty of reasons to believe that HxH is queer work, and while platonic readings of killugon’s relationship are valid, it sucks that it’s become overbearing in the anime community, to the point where outside of tumblr, people literally bully you for thinking that there’s a possibility Killua might be gay and in love with Gon. (trust me, i’ve faced a lot of people saying that it’s disgusting to label killua as gay)
So yes ! Killugon can be read as platonic. The queer community is just very adamant about people not dismissing Togashi’s subtext because HxH is the healthy, positive representation we need. It’s a beautiful piece of work that has the full potential (and who is most likely headed this way) to display a healthy, loving, positive canon gay relationship between two of its main characters.
Showing that a shounen battle manga can feature a canon gay relationship, showing that you can be young and gay and what you thought was best friend behavior was maybe romantic and that it’s okay because feelings change and are hard to figure out especially when you’re young and queer !!
And most importantly showing that unlike every portrayal of deep male best friends relationships in shounen anime that turn out to be painted as purely platonic, sometimes behaviors that queer people identify with ARE queer behavior, and not just platonic love, but romantic, homosexual love.

Yep, Alluka is a trans girl. It's also important that the members of her family except Killua alternate the male pronouns with basically calling her an object which I found a pretty clear and poignant way to compare misgendering with a form of objectification. Meta anon (sorry for me intruding, but I just really really love Alluka and Nanika).
Yes! I’m also pretty happy with the representation in HxH. Gosh I hate the Zoldyck parents. Alluka is indeed, my second fave now after Killua. 10/10 must protect.
