So I've been thinking about Hoede and why testing jurda parem on Anya (the indentured healer girl from chapter 1 of SoC) backfired on him so badly.

For starters we're told that the reason he tested the parem on her was because he figured that the safer corporalki to test it on is a healer rather than a heartrender given that healers are known to be more tame, they help people rather than harm them. I find this to be one his biggest mistakes, in one of Nina's chapters she states that all corporalki start off training together, learning the same stuff before they decide to choose which path they want to follow-- if they would prefer to harm others or heal others. Although not explicitly stated it can be inferred that the main reason healers and heartrenders are considered different is more or less their training. While healers learn to understand the body more intricately and use more patience in their craft, heatrenders learn to fight, they learn to use their powers in a more bloodthirsty way, they understand the human body enough to break it but not fix it. However, we know that parem alters a grisha's perception rather than power and as we see with Nina after she takes a dose of the parem she can heal just as well, simultaneously healing herself while fighting the drüskelle and fjerdan military. So why shouldn't it work the same for Anya? Hoede's biggest mistake was his lack of understanding of Grisha power.

This is probably well-known information but I just wanted to post about it anyway.

Sunday Night Spotlight

Using this to highlight one of my published works that has not gotten as much attention as others, and I would love to see more hits on it.

Zeilen is the 10th story in my series Kanej Wensen, and while it helps to have read any of the other stories in the series, it does stand on its own. We get to see Captain Ghafa's crew victorious in battle, Inej do some spy craft while training a new spider, adventures in four original character POVs, and a visit to Pekka and Alby Rollins.

The action takes places 2+ years post Crooked Kingdom, and is generally canon compliant, with an established Kanej relationship

dsghsfkjhdfl back when my ex-bf and i were on a break i downloaded hinge for fun and matched with this italian phd student but 1) he was almost ten years older than me and 2) i wasnt really looking for anything serious but he was very very nice and i had fun talking to him okay

AND THEN i was catching up to the recorded lectures for the final and he was doing a guest lecture and i literally had to double take bc it was THE GUY!!! IT WAS THE HINGE GUY anyways we hate him bc he wrote the worst final ive ever written but we also want him desperately

"I have an idea-" The alkemi started.

"Well, that's a bad omen." Her sister quickly interrupted.

"And why is that?" Kaz inquired of the Zemeni tidemaker.

"Why? Are you seriously asking me that?" She said with a scoff, "I can not be the only one that's noticed that whenever a fabrikator has a 'great idea' things go horribly wrong."

Jesper made a jokingly offended face, "All of my ideas have been flawless, thank you very much."

The other crows merely glanced at him before Inej spoke up, "You sure about that?"

"I'm serious! Listen: Sankt Ilya, a Ravkan fabrikator. He decides it's a great idea to mix his abilities with merzost to create the amplifiers, and he creates the shadow summoners by accident. Then his grandson, you know.. the Darkling, uses his notes and creates the fold and those creatures that almost killed us! Or that Shu chemist, Bo Yul-Bayur! He thought it was a great idea to use jurda to hide zowa abilities, something he wouldn't have felt the need to do if it weren't for the other two, and instead he created a drug that kills everyone-" She looked at Nina who coughed to remind the group of her presence. "Almost everyone who takes it."

"And what of it?" The elder Zemeni woman replied in an annoyed tone.

"The point is, your idea is probably insane. Maybe even worse considering you thought of it conveniently after our trip to the Fold."

Kaz nodded, "She has a point. Besides, right now we should be focusing on how to stay alive with everyone trying to hunt us."

At that moment Alina stood from her seat, "We can’t rule out anything that may help us. Jendayi, what exactly is your plan?"

Jendayi sighed before speaking, "At least someone is trying to do more than sit here and hide. Though I can’t lie, there is a minor inconvenience in the plan, but hear me out. Everything that Jagrati said is true. Those guys have changed so much for Zowa throughout the continents so why can't we do the same? If I could get Morozova's notes-"

"Get his notes?! How do you expect to do that?"

"When we were in the fold, towards the center, I saw a structure barely illuminated by Alina's light. It's the only building there. I think that's where the Darkling created the Fold, meaning that must be where his notes are! If I go back in, I could get then and learn how to..." The woman trailed off, knowing that if she finished that thought the Crows and Sun Saint would be against it. "Well, I think I could come up with a solution to our current issue."

The thing is, I miss zowa irrationally. I won't call her a stranger because we weren't. Wtv time we spent together will always be dear to me. I will never forget the way we completed eachothers sentences or how profoundly she echoed back my love and passion for numerous things. She was probably the kindest soul I've encountered in a long, long while. Meeting her had an impact of a lifetime. I think of the time when she and I were talking about astronomy through anon asks. It didn't take me long to figure out that it was her. She was truly something I don't throw around lightly, a soul mate. She understood my mind in calibers that shocked me. She brought her perfectly articulated thoughts and views on topics that were so hard to have a fulfilling conversation on. Her mind was like a slightly different but better reflection of mine. She's someone I had little time with, but that's what makes her even more special to me. Her impact on me is everlasting, and I'm forever grateful for having that time with her

WIP Wednesday!

Thanks to @tinyarmedtrex for posting and reminding me what day it was!

One of my WIP's is a spin off story from Kanej Wensen, wherein Jesper starts training with a local Grisha in Ketterdam. Here's a snippet from the first day he heads to her shop to talk about his possible apprenticeship.

Tij gestured to the selection of tea tins and asked if he wanted anything. Before he could stop himself, he asked if she had anything stronger.

An arched eyebrow and a grin accompanied her reply. “Bit early for that in polite Ketterdam society, but I’m not Kerch, so… Kvas, wine, or whiskey?”

“I adore you. Whiskey.” 

“Maybe don’t say that around my husband Volk, young man,” she said with a chuckle as she got down a bottle of Ballybay blend and two glasses from an upper cabinet. My mouth is so fired. He’d noticed Volk the first time they’d been in the shop, and now felt the need to look around and make sure he wasn’t about to get pummeled by a giant, jealous husband. 

“I’ll, uh, keep that in mind.”

Tij handed him a glass, and took a seat on the couch at one end, by the armchair. She sipped from her own glass, sighed expressively, and waited. Jesper took a sip of his own. Not as good as a Leflinnach, but tasty. Maybe it’ll calm my nerves. He couldn’t sit, but he did keep himself from pacing.

“So, I wanted to, uh, talk to you, about the, uh…”

She gently interrupted his stammering, “Do you think I’m going to bite you? That’s also generally reserved for my husband.”

The statement was so unexpected that Jes burst out laughing. Oh Saints, I do actually adore her. Inej was right, she’s a bit like Nina. Tij waited for him to control his mirth, grinning the whole time. She appeared to know exactly what she’d done, and prompted him now.

“You’re here to talk to me about the apprenticeship. I was waiting for you to show up.”
