Now if u follow me u know I’ve been loving the fic to the point of creation, being inspired enough to make art.

I love Ruby’s fic for a number of reasons. Firstly it’s Zukka and honestly that pairing is just everything to me.

But Ruby’s writing just makes it. A few times I’ve sat down, trying to write a comment about specific parts of her writing that I love and it’s HARD. Because the most beautiful thing about Ruby’s writing, what makes it special, is all the components of writing, all the little elements of it - they’re all GOOD, they’re excellent! - but more than that they slot together so smoothly that it’s impossible to chunk it down into pieces and break it apart to analyse. And the result is the most beautifully woven together story that you just MELT into. I’ve said this to ruby before but that fic just plays in my head like a movie as I’m reading it - it’s just that well written, with not a single word wasted. You get lost in it, and I honestly forget it’s not canon.

But I have to talk about how ruby writes sokka. Sokka is special to me. He’s a character I see a lot of myself in (I might even have a massive undercut at the back but we don’t need to talk about how kinning is my most recent coping mechanism so MOVING ON). To me he’s ADHD-coded and very much a bright, intelligent “gifted kid”. He struggles to follow through sometimes, he’s quick to react emotionally, he gets very insecure about his abilities and it affects his self esteem. Being left alone in the SWT there were high expectations of him, and again during the invasion. He takes a lot upon himself, and he’s a great leader but he’s never without the little voice in his head saying “what if you’re doing this all wrong? What if you fuck it up? What is everyone going to think of you then? Do you really know what you’re doing?”. I feel like sokka’s hyperactivity really manifests itself into overplanning - like he did for day of the black sun. He’s also so creative and inventive as adhd brains often are - he thinks outside the box and as Piandao said he “messes things up in a very interesting way”.

Sokka is one of my ultimate comfort characters and Ruby writes him immaculately. His fears, his anxieties, his difficulties with meditation and mindfulness, being impulsive. But also his humour and his charm. The way she writes his inner monologue and thoughts have had me WEEPING with laughter but also from the emotional sucker punch that is seeing ur comfort character wrestle with their problems.

This particular quote comes from a scene where Zuko is trying to teach Sokka to meditate and practice mindfulness - something I and a lot of adhd brains struggle with lmao - and Sokka, not actually being able to be quiet for two fkn seconds is being facetious, deliberately obtuse and snarky in classic sokka style that we all know and love.

And Zuko says to him “Insufferable, as always”. Now to me this is the most beautiful small moment. I have spent a lot of my life being very aware that I am too much. I feel like people with adhd become the funny friend so that we can ensure that people are looking and laughing at us on purpose, and for a good reason. Otherwise we risk being talked about for being too loud, too intense, too enthusiastic (because that’s ~*cringe*~), too passionate about our “weird” interests (that’s boring, who wants to listen to that). Simultaneously we’re not enough - we’re not punctual enough, not organised enough, not tidy enough, not paying enough attention, not listening well enough, not trying hard enough. We’re so aware of all of this. We spend our lives absorbing the idea that we can be tough to be around. But Zuko, when he’s looking at sokka and he says this, he does it with so. much. love. He does it with a smile. He’s saying “you’re insufferable AND I love you for it”. Not “you’re insufferable BUT” not “I love you despite your chaos”.

No he’s saying “I love you because of it. I love you AND your chaos”.

A slight sidetrack into a headcanon, I firmly believe Sokka struggles with Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria. He internalises and takes to heart the smallest comments of perceived criticism- he wants so badly to do a good job at being the planner and the protector that the smallest comments can just crush him (but he’d never let on). And so usually if anyone else were to call him insufferable he’d laugh it off “yep that’s me! Insufferable Sokka at your service” but deep down that hurt. He’s gonna think about that for days. BUT so secure is he in the knowledge that Zuko loves him through and through that “insufferable” doesn’t even phase him. He KNOWS it comes from a place of love. (It wasn’t easy for him to convince himself of it at first - it took a long time for him to check his RSD with Zuko but it’s paid off). He knows that Zuko is thinking “you’re insufferable and I fucking love you”.

So I got it the quote on a fkn shirt because yes, I’m insufferable sometimes. But that’s just how I am and I claim that for myself because I’m not gonna change. The people in my life that love me, love me like this. I’m not insufferable to them, to them I’m just me. So just as Sokka has an unconditional love in Zuko, the people in this world who are worth anything will love us in the same way.

And Ruby. Omg ruby. thank u for blessing us with ur writing (and this quote) amongst ur academic deadlines. We’re so lucky you choose to share ur incredible writing with us. And thank u for just rolling w my very intense brand of love for ur work ❤️ it’s hyperfixation at its finest and u matching the energy and the love right back has honestly just made me feel so much less self conscious about being “too much”. I’ve also gained some lovely zukka-loving mutuals from the art of Zuko’s interlude and so I have you to thank for the little zukka bubble that is my dash now 💖💖💖 (I’m never going back).

okay!!!! 

what I like about them is that they can just like. chill together, especially since neither of them has any chill whatsoever. there’s an understanding there that allows them to relax and be themselves, and spending their whole lives isolated & peerless, it makes sense that they trust each other & so quickly feel comfortable around each other, bc it’s the first time (esp for zuko) that they feel Seen. 

and like, I know that people love Drama when it comes to Romance, but as someone who loathes contrived drama and conventional romantic tropes, I appreciate the fact that sokka and zuko clearly trust & understand each other enough that they would excel at conflict resolution. zuko shuts down sokka’s perfectionism & guilt complex, and sokka doesn’t put up with zuko’s self-sacrificing (because he’s the self-sacrificing one around here, dammit! everyone knows that!! don’t steal his thing). 

like, there would obviously be external conflict, but I think, at least for me, the difference between a compelling romance and a tiresome one is whether the conflict is internal (based on incompatibility and/or miscommunication) or external (outside forces that need to be confronted) that the pair can work to resolve together as a team. 

(this isn’t always the case, because internal conflict can be a well-done catalyst depending on how said conflict is resolved, but I inherently despise all straightforward rom coms, for example, because it necessitates the protagonists to behave entirely & inexplicably irrationally, and I have no idea why anyone would invest in the happiness of such loathsome characters. plus romance doesn’t necessarily equal happiness, but yknow. in the universe of rom coms it does. but I digress.) 

the boiling rock allows for romance to develop in what is obviously external conflict, which is why I am of the belief that it is one of the only good romcoms (I said what I said) ever made. (if we’re talking straightforward romcoms, then what’s up doc (1972) is truly the only other one.) it’s the development of a relationship that is based on mutual trust as opposed to (the previously-established) antagonism, and the potential just spirals out from there. 

zuko is primarily a literature/theatre nerd, whereas sokka is more of a science/math nerd (but he has lit nerd tendencies), and I think they would talk about art & philosophy a lot, and get really in the weeds and argumentative about it. their only real fights are about things that don’t actually matter, like grammar semantics, or the distinction between nihilism and atheism. 

they would basically develop their own language founded on previously established inside jokes, and when they want to, fucking no one understands what they are talking about. people think they’re insane but actually they’re just on the same wavelength and no one else can keep up. 

I especially like the idea of them just chilling around each other, like sitting and reading, or drawing, together. pursuing quietly artistic hobbies and feeling at peace together. they’re both such intense people, but not inherently; it’s just a trait they’ve both developed due to the shape of their lives—and the value of being able to just relax and unwind together is immeasurable. 

I also feel like even their sparring matches would be less about who wins and more about learning from each other. zuko has more experience but sokka has a very unique way of analyzing an opponent, his terrain, etc. and they both admire the other and would want to study from each other. like yes maybe at first it’s that inigo/westley style sexual tension (zuko is inigo sokka is westley, duh), but i think eventually it just develops into another way in which they both will nerd out over the same things. 

sokka takes zuko to the haiku club, or to terrible plays on purpose, and zuko shows sokka the royal library and the turtleduck pond and all the hidden passages in the palace, or they paint together, or go looking for cute animals in the woods to hunt to cuddle, and they don’t have to worry about being scrutinized, the only person they are seen by is each other. 

anyway yeah they’re nerd4nerd they’re frog and toad (except they’re both toads) and I love that for them

I made one like yesterday lol! It’s @blue-dragon-shin-ah and it’s for Akatsuki no Yona (an anime and manga I TOTALLY rec! It’s like a historical themed fantasy, comedy, romance WITH a found family trope it’s so good)

hmm according to my tumblr account it’d be 2016 since that’s the oldest post I’ve kept (I deleted everything and revamped this acc in december 2020)

BUT I did the math and I would’ve made this account in middle school so around 2013-2014 lol I don’t think I used it much until voltron was booming in like 2016-2018.. Then I lowkey stopped… until now!

Honestly I like Zutara, and I have done so since the show was still airing. However, I do not like the fandom's bias towards Aang and Katara now. That is, disliking Aang for not being a conventionally attractive "hot" boy or something like Zuko. And all the misogyny directed towards Katara and seemingly only her to ptop up other characters like Sokka and even Azula. It comes across as racist and misogynistic.

And the thing is: You can't blame the show for this. Because the show does give Aang his arc. It gives Katara her arc. It gives them great moments of growth and developtment and great dialogue and scenes that just won't leave you from how iconic they are. It's really the fandom's fault, 'cause they let shipping and personal preference get in the way of what the show and characters are actually like and what it's message is. Judging others based on appeareance is something the show goes agaisn't.

I think this might also be a problem of the newer fandom discovering ATLA but watching it pretty much all at once instead of seasonally. The old fandom had more respect and love for the characters of Aang and Katara, but that's because we had to watch them grow but seasonally. So when a character learned something or became stronger it was special because you had to wait months to see it. You had time to really appreciate it. Whereas with Netflix it was all at once, and that affects perception.

I have a lot of thoughts™ about the fandom at the moment, but you’ve accurately summarised a lot of what is wrong with it. I really dislike the amount of disdain that some people in the fandom have for Zutara and the way they thirst over a sixteen year old boy. I hate how they crack jokes that Katara is hOmOPhobiC and act like Azula is the ultimate lesbian (who, in fact, manipulated and really hurt her friends). I hate how they fetishise and sexualise Zukka, how they like to pretend that it’s any different from Zutara (but just gay), and how the fandom conveniently either chooses to ignore Katara or make fun of her for being the only responsible and level-headed person in the Gaang apart from Suki. It’s pretty clear that Katara being a woman of colour with dark skin is the reason she’s getting all the hate, and she absolutely does not deserve it.

I think you really do might have a point about how binge-watching shows affects our perception about the content. What takes twenty minutes in a binge watch can never actually match up to a week’s worth of building up, ruminating over the show’s content, and allowing the story to really sink in.

At the end of the day, fans just need to calm down and stop stanning ships so hard that you set off shipping wars. You need to respect why people like something, and not put them down for it. Don’t pull the “I don’t see what this ship has going for it” card either, because this is fiction, and there are tens of thousands of ways in which it can be interpreted, and a thing called “headcanon” exists. Don’t blame a character and hold them responsible for biases that the creators had. Don’t make a big thing out of a character making mistakes (which the characters eventually grow past). Don’t blatantly ignore canon evidence that a character grows.

Instead of getting involved in this sort of petty nonsense, you could be spending time discussing the interesting details in the show and actually having fun.

I’m bringing up the Zutara rant at the end, because I’m tired of the stans.  I really love the ship itself and the set up for it was pretty great. We get a sun/moon, fire/water parallel and a blue spirit/painted lady parallel. We have an enemies-to-lovers trope going for it too. But despite how objectively good it is, I have some really negative thoughts about Zutara shippers because of how aggressive they are. Boy do they love to point out at random x thing Aang did in season 1 and say that this makes him insensitive and abusive. I can’t believe I have to say this, but this is wrong. Don’t go after a 12 year old kid and call him ‘abusive’ just because you’re upset with what happened in canon. You need help if you’re going to start piling hate on a kid. And as the show’s protagonist and a child, Aang is definitely bound to make mistakes, so that he can grow past them. There wouldn’t be a point to making him a protagonist otherwise.

(Yes, Zutara shippers are also to blame for the recent distaste I’ve developed for the ship and I dislike how they sexualise Zuko. I don’t like that they thirst after a boy just because he falls under some of the conventional “hot” and angsty guy tropes and sometimes reduce him to just that. It makes me wonder how many of them dislike Aang as a romantic love interest because people don’t seem to love sweet, kind and gentle boys in media as much as they like they angsty ones).
