Reflection

I looked in the mirror,

Cracking under the pressure,

Trying to be a woman as well as a mom.

I saw the breasts that nursed you,

The stomach that grew with you,

And the skin that stretched to support you,

And I wanted to cry.

Then you told me that I was beautiful,

And at three-feet tall and four years old

I knew that you honestly believed it.

I knew that you would never know to fill my ears with pleasantries

To spare my feelings.

And I cried,

Because I think the love I have for you

Is reflected in the purity of your heart

I realized that I needed to move on when I saw you after two months. My heart immediately dropped and I looked to the floor as I walked past you. I heard your laughter within the loudness of the crowd. I saw you dancing and moving about as if you didn’t have a single worry. Meanwhile, I was shaking and couldn’t help but feel tears form.
