book review || The Inheritance of Orquidea Divina by Zoraida Cordova
video review || Raid My Shelves 6: Reading Vlog — BOTM Books
After rereading this physically, I can definitely say that the writing is absolutely beautiful and the exploration of Orquidea’s character is spectacular.
This alternates between exploring the history of Orquidea and how she came to be this witchy woman in her house that appeared out of nothing and then three of Orquidea’s grandchildren who are left a magical inheritance. The character work around Orquidea and Marimar is particularly wonderful, with each of them receiving a fleshed-out background, morally gray personalities, and trauma that’s shaped them. The other two grandchildren, Rey and Tatinelly, receive the same treatment, but they don’t jump off the page in quite the same way, though Rey did grow on me more as the story progressed. I particularly loved his relationship with Marimar, cousins so close you’d think they’re siblings.
I love how this rides the line of contemporary and fantastical, with whimsical writing and a soft magic system that could easily be excused away as superstitious practices. It feels almost fairytale-ish. The setting of a magical house in this small country town is really brought to life and is filled with childhood whimsy through the memories of Orquidea’s grandchildren.
The story is a family drama, exploring the trauma of Orquidea and how it has impacted her life and now, the future generations, wrapped up in lyrical writing and layered characters. I was pretty impressed at how much has been established and taken place within only 160 pages, but a fantastical mystery develops in the second half that had me all the more enthralled with disturbingly beautiful imagery and stakes that grew as we neared the end. I didn’t see the reveals coming at all, gasping at the turns this took, but I absolutely loved the heart-wrenching ending.

Today I decided to refill my veins with fresh, ruby blood. To shower my whole body with the shades of scarlet, apricot, coral, saffron, rosey champagne sparks, and ah! All the hue, and flavours of an African dawn, or the throne of the God of the Dead. I wanted to turn my flesh into a sacred veil of an eastern shrine, and my bones, into the wild runes of ancient gods, that are circling amidst florid flames. I was eager to live my transparency, my blending into the universe, even just for once, but preferably, for ever. I wanted to become the euphoria, the mesmerizing touch of the frames of reality, that my fellow earthlings could praise. I longed to be seen the same way, like how I felt about my carefully forged being; pukka, ethereal, deflowered, agonic, carnal. An onyx, crying out a bouquet of shell-shaped lyre, whilst giving birth to spider lilies, and dandelion. The descendant of Persephone.

how i'm studying mandarin (in 2024)
as a low-maintenance language learner working a 9-6 office job, i've been muddling around how to improve my mandarin in my free time and keep it fun! And I've found what works for me (thanks to a lot of lurking on here - appreciate all you mandarin langblrs <3), so wanted to share :)
Evening lessons (or italki) - Self studying is great but I do need a kick up the ass sometimes, so these really help. Plus my teacher is great at giving tips here and there which I probably wouldn't pick up on on my own.
ChinesePod - Their podcasts are really well made and accessible, I can't recommend them enough!
HelloChinese - This is my 'I'm bored waiting for my train/bus but I still want to learn Chinese' option that isn't Duolingo. It's not perfect but it has fairly good grammar explanations and native listening segments. You do have to pay a subscription if you're over HSK1 level FYI.
I am an anki hater first and foremost, so here's the vocab learning / dictionary tools I use instead:
TofuLearn - It's straightforward, uses spaced repetition learning AND teaches you stroke order - so ticks all my boxes. Picked it up due to @marilearnsmandarin's posts about it!
Pleco - Obviously, everyone has it downloaded for a reason.
Yabla Chinese Dictionary - Not seen this one talked about so much, but would recommend! It sometimes has video examples of the hanzi in use, which I find helpful.
A big goal for me this year is to consume mandarin content more regularly! It's all well and good watching Peppa Pig, but I need something that I actively want to engage with:
Bilibili Comics - Currently reading 肉店楼上的工作室 and able to understand a fair chunk, so would recommend as a "easier" option.
Mandopop - Not sure how much I'm picking up from listening, especially at my level, but it's fun to jam out to some good tunes. Faves include TIA RAY, Song Qian, Lexie Liu, No Party for Cao Dong & Shi Shi.
Dramas/Movies - Modern chinese dramas are a lot more hit-or-miss for me, especially compared to historical/fantasy. Recent faves include Accidentally in Love & Stay with Me (on Netflix/Viki). Currently watching Reset :) Any other recs, please send my way!
YouTube - I have a separate YT account just to follow Taiwanese/Chinese creators - it takes a bit of searching but you can find some great youtubers who talk about whatever hobby you're into (whether that's cute golden retriever vlogs, travel vlogs or reading vlogs!)

im extremely new to writing and i mostly write for myself as a hobby. My issue is I don't feel like I can really be objective ab what I write and I'm not at a point where I'm comfortable sharing it with others but I do wanna get better.. is there a way to be able to objectively pick out the flaws in the way you write (both narratively and writing style)
Improving Writing without Feedback
Here are some things you can do to improve your writing when you're not ready to seek feedback:
1 - Read a lot of the kinds of books you want to write. Being an avid reader is genuinely the best way to learn what works, what doesn't, and learn how to spot flaws in your writing. Read a variety of books, but do also read many of the kinds of books you want to write. For example, if you write YA fantasy, you should read a lot of YA fantasy. The more you read, the more your own writing will improve.
2 - Read craft books and writing advice articles/blogs. Another great way to hone your craft is to read books, articles, and blogs about writing. The more you learn about the process, mechanics, and fundamentals of writing, the more your own writing will improve.
3 - Watch and listen to writing vlogs and podcasts. YouTube is filled to the gills with great writing advice videos, so pretty much any writing-related topic you'd want to learn about, there will be a video talking about it. And there are loads of great writing podcasts, too, focusing on everything from general writing advice to genre specific advice.
4 - Take a writing class, workshop, boot camp, or seminar. There are loads and loads of educational offerings to help writers improve their writing. And the great thing is many of these are available online and for free. Writing forums and general writing blogs/social media pages are a great way to learn about these opportunities when they come up. You can also search Google. Following writers and authors on social media is another great way to learn about these opportunities.
5 - Seek out specific information. Sometimes the best way to learn is to seek out information specific to something you want to learn. If you want to find the flaws in your writing, Google "writing flaws" or "how to find writing flaws" or "ten flaws in your writing" to find blogs, articles, vlogs, etc. that tell you want kinds of things to look out for. Or, say you want to learn to write stronger characters, you can Google "how to write strong characters" and read the most promising articles that pop up.

He would own every single album, photocard, merch both official and non, he would also have purchased any item you had a collab with, your group once had a collab with Pepsi he bought out the entire stock , of a store just so he could get the limited edition photocard that came with it.
He would also probably buy any item related to you or any item you used. The lip balm you used he would have a box of it, the book you recommended he would have read it twice, the perfume you used he would use to, the tissues you used in a vlive he would have, he would buy the same phone case as you too.
The man would basically have a shrine dedicated to you.
He would also manage to get into every single fansign.
He would also probably run an update account.
Taeil ( the cover) 🧡
Taeil wouldn't let his obsessive behavior show he would be mature and would be a loyal fan since day 1.
But in his mind he would imagine what it would be like to have a family with you.
He would also cover your songs and you had in fact noticed him quite a few times and you were quite impressed with his vocals and soon you found yourself answering his dms and slowly falling for him.
He had planned for this to happened in his mind this was what was best for you and you believed it too because to you he was a sweet caring man who loved you very much. What you didn't notice was how you slowly drifted away from everyone in your life and now it was just him and you and in all honesty you couldn't care less.
Jhonny (The Youtuber)💛
He was a youtuber with quite a big following he would mostly film vlogs and do reaction videos.
Whenever he did a reaction video to one of your groups it was quite obvious who his favorite was.
Given the fact that he has a lot of subscribers and that he was also a know fan of your group your company thought it would be a good idea for your group to collaborate with him.
Your group agreed and you both shot a collab , but jhonny wanted you to shine the most so when he filmed the other members he made sure to use bad lighting and angles to make sure you stood out the most.
He would also secretly let the cameras roll when you thought they were off, he would also have a camera in your changing room, which he would later use to black mail you.
Yuta ( The artist)💚
He would run an art page but most of the drawings were of you. It slowly started to become a fan art page of you. At first it was innocent and harmless, just a couple of normal painting of you with cat ears or you as a Disney princess. He would always tag you and on a few occasions you had even liked and ever reshared a couple of paintings.
But soon as his obsession grew the nature of his paintings slowly started to change at first it was just slightly weird like paintings of you in handcuffs or with a blindfold, or ones with you with a little blood here and there. You brushed it off as most people make edits like this but soon they started to become more disturbing he started to draw paintings of you in a cage, you gagged and tied up, you in lewd positions. And various other sick fantasies he had.

He acted like he wasn't a fan, infact he acted like he hated you. He would always put you down. He would leave hate comments on your fan cafes even on your vlives.
One day you actually read out a hate comment he left he saw your face drop as you read it.
His heart went giddy with excitement you had noticed him, you were affected by him, he couldn't be happier. He continued to do it cause he enjoyed seeing you react he loved getting your attention even if it meant this is what he had to do in order to get it.
Would buy information from other saesangs and use it against you to get you to do whatever he wanted you to do.
Jaehyun ( entitled)💝
To him you were only meant to be his. You didn't have to do anything for anyone but him.
Your attention should be on him at all times these other people didn't deserve to get your attention.
At concerts he wanted you to only focus on him if he would notice you give attention to anyone else he would send you death glares.
You were once performing at one of your concerts and decided to go up to his section and you accepted a rose a male fan had given you when you turned your head you made eye contact with jaehyun and he shot you a look at that moment the were so terrified by the anger in his eyes you dropped the rose unconsciously and froze but soon one of your members dragged you to the center of the stage because it was time for the ending stage.
Jungwoo (lovesick)💖
A lovesick puppy. He would always have notifications on and would drop everything when you went live. You were his number 1 priority everything else came second even himself. He would be obsessed with you and would be in love with everything and anything you did. To him you were a godess.
He was so cute and cheering for you at your concert you shot him a wink and a flying kiss he nearly had a nose bleed.
To you he seemed like a harmless cute fan boy.
After your concert you were the last one out to get out off the venue but what you didn't know was that the paparazzi where waiting outside and began to mob you and you frantically searched for your manager who was waiting for you in the car. You saw a black car pull up and you got into it thinking that it was your manager as soon as you got out you noticed that the man driving didn't quite look like your manager before you could say anything you felt your vision black out.
Mark (Boy next door)💓
He was cute and charming and had managed to wrap your members around his little finger with his cute charm.
He would often show up at events which was normal and you would smile and wave at him like you would at any fan.
Soon he started to show up at private schedule's and on the sets of mvs or ads
shooting you thought this was a little weird cause no one was supposed to know about these schedules when you talked about this to your members they brushed it off by saying that it was probably the companies fault so you let it slide.
But soon you started to see him at places more often you saw him at the hair salon, you saw him when you took your dog for a walk, when you went shopping, he always kept his distance.
You were out with your friends at a cafe he was seated a couple of tables behind you when the waiter came with your drinks and started to flirt with you. You swore you could practically feel mark burn you with his glare.
Haechan ( quick wit)💕
He would always manage to catch your attention whether if it was by doing something cute or by passing a witty comment.
Soon things started to get out of control he always had to have your attention.
He would spam your lives, get into multiple fansign.
He managed to get your number and would relentlessly call and text you.
He would show up at your dorm.
You tried your best to ignore him until one day you saw a notification on your phone it was a picture of your room, then another picture of your mom on her way to get groceries, an other one of your little brother on his way to school, a text showed up.
"Reply if you don't want them to get hurt".

She has a spider called Dragon, Alicent hates it.
Her favorite subject in high school is science.
She is in the drawing club and the theater club at her high school.
In class, she's the girl who sits in the back of the room and draws in her notebooks.
She loves to read fantasy books . Her favorite saga is "The Lord of the Rings".
She loves to paint.
She plays the transverse flute.
She tooks inspiration on Pinterest for her outfits.
Her favorite outfit is a pink overalls with a yellow t-shirt.
She loves cardigans.
She dyes the ends of her hair with pale colors. The colors she has kept the longest are pink and blue.
She has lots of plants in her room and gives a names to each one of them.
She is definitely a swiftie and makes everyone listen Taylor's music with her. Alicent listens with her but leaves after the 5th song. Aegon ignores her. Aemond listens to her talk about the love triangle in folklore even though he doesn't understand anything at all.
She makes spotify playlists for all the most important moments in her life.
On the family WhatsApp group, she only sends a message when it comes to answering a question.

He is a dog person.
Vaghar is definitely a big dog.
His favorite subject in high school is history and philosophy.
He just want his mother attention.
He has an instagram account just to like his mother's posts and a tik tok account to like what Helaena posts but he blocks Aegon on every social media.

He has an eye patch but no one apart from his family know why.
He was bullied when he was kid but that stopped the day he bullied his bullies back.
He doesn't talk to anyone at school except his sister and refuses to be seen in public with Aegon.
He goes to all the Helaena shows.
He loves horror movies.
He has been playing the piano since childhood.
He loves Shakespeare but hates Romeo and Juliet. He says Romeo is weird and Juliet was just a 14 year old.

He lets Helaena practice her eye-liner on him.

Aegon:

DD and volcano
Everything that is written here is my fantasies that have no relation to reality, I am the clown turtle.🤡🤡🤡
Photos of DD on the volcano in Inner Mongolia left no one indifferent.
MTJJ and "shrimps" are trying their best to "wash" this, claiming that DD went to inspect locations for "Mermaid", that this has nothing to do with GG, that he went with Cheng Er, some even say that DD went there in 2022 (by the way, violating quarantine restrictions!).
But, firstly, the supposed shooting location stated in the information about the film is too far from the place where DD was photographed. Secondly, it’s unlikely that DD would reveal the filming locations of the film that hasn’t even started filming yet.
And thirdly, all this is not important at all, it doesn’t even matter much when he went there, and whether GG was there or not.
Because the most important thing is the very fact of publishing such photos. If you think about it, DD just threw a huge lightning bolt at those who are trying to create a false impression about him.
The day before, someone started another malicious rumor about him involving a woman. A week ago it was GG’s birthday, he published the vlog and photos about how he walked in the mountains. Even Beijing sparrows know that GG is filming in Inner Mongolia. MTJJ have recently been very sensitive to the words “Inner Mongolia”; even DD's wardrobe account, when publishing the location of DD’s photo, did not indicate these words, leaving only the name of the place itself.
And DD, knowing full well WHAT kind of reaction this will cause both from MTJJ and from CPF, and what explosion of emotions from all sides will follow this, immediately publishes: 1. Photos where he climbed into the mountains (and even wrote in the caption to the photo: “Climb the mountains”). 2. From Inner Mongolia. 3. In that place there is a sign that reads: “Ten thousand years of the volcano have witnessed thousands of years of love.”
Would the person who does not want to be associated with GG and who wants to avoid suspicion do this? And is it so important now to prove why he went there and when exactly he went there?
In my opinion, he spoke very eloquently on this topic. I love him very much.

hiii i’m hailey just wanted to introduce myself and my drs bc im bored 😜
OKKK first im a shifter (that hasn’t shifted) 😭😭
I started out in shifttok (ew..) then transitioned to reddit which eventually made me want to come to tumblr..
i still have no idea how tumblr works, i was never a tumblr girlie 😭😭😭
anyway onto my drs
MY WAITING ROOM
this is itttt (pic found on pinterest) in front of the bed there’s a couch and a big tv, there i can watch memories from my cr and any of my drs, the tv is gonna be like a netflix layout and every show is gonna have different seasons (each a year), and I can watch the vlogs i make in my traveling dr 😁
also here I have like an alexa that i can call that’ll summon anything i want, I also have my cat here so i don’t feel super alone, bc that’s low key scary….
From my waiting room i can shift to any of my drs, and script them, I also have a huge closet so i can pick out clothes that i’ll have in each dr, and a magic mirror that i can change my appearance with! It’s also where I’ll shift back to before i get back to my cr!

ok so this is my main dr i want to go to rn. it’s basically in the name I can travel anywhere w my friends or just by myself. I of course have unlimited money 😜
I also have a vlogging youtube channel where i vlog everything i do, I don’t have alot of subscribers, as it is mostly just for me. But i also just want to be someone’s comfort vlogger 😭😭

ok so this dr is a mix of like acotar, throne of glass, and kinda the witcher???
So basically i’m a witch (this is where the wither aesthetic is) and im in a coven but we are really free to do anything after our training. I’m super powerful bc Im also part high fae. I’m the only witch that’s been “created” usually you are just born as a witch, but when i was younger i got really sick and my aunt was a witch and asked the coven to help me. she died trying to save me (rip aunt frl) anyway i then went through schooling there and stuff. After that i move back to my little cottage, but still attend gatherings and balls with the coven.

public persona vs real personality

fun fact, this my mom's bias!
I didn't write down the cards because I usually get too many in this type of reading as there are many questions being made. but nothing here is difficult to notice in real life and I'm not exposing any secrets, so just trust me bros 🤥
persona
hongjoong is seen as a leader, he wants to be seen as compassionate and friendly, but firm, he wants others to know that there are consequences and he should be feared if need be (this includes everyone, like how he calls out fans if they mess up bad). he tries to look fun, entertaining, of course, and he really tries to become friends with those involving his work, although he has strong boundaries and limits, if necessary. he doesn't let people walk over anyone, and he's the type to follow strict rules and activities but only with ease, but only if he agrees with them. hongjoong thinks it's important to show happiness and contentment on camera no matter what. his job is to fulfill a fantasy, so the way he acts depends a lot on what's the job - photoshoot, stage, live, vlog, etc. in general, he wants to bring happiness and escape to others, he really dives into the idea of ateez being a family. he also shows a lot of respect to traditions and social hierarchies, he often asks advice and listens attentively to his seniors, and is extra polite around different types of people (reminded of him asking permission to touch a fan's face when ateez was doing their makeup). hongjoong's fanservice is nothing unusual, it's easy to understand and identify (at least that's what he thinks), overall he acts like he is impulsive and all fans are incredibly attractive to him, he acts as if he's genuinely got a crush on people (he's a good actor) and he thinks it's part of a game everyone agreed to play, hongjoong might think his fans are very down to earth and realistic, and everyone knows when he's not being genuine (he is wrong), he does think fans lack boundaries and rules and he tries to put them in their place when he can and sees wrong. hongjoong sees fans from a distance, however, he may gloss over social media every once in a while to figure out fan's tendencies but may think looking often is bad for his mental health, even with those fans that have the best intentions (seeing people that don't know him talk about him all the time is bad for his self image, no matter if they're talking good or bad, as it's disconnected from reality either way).
of all members I've read, hongjoong is the most calm when it comes to fan's idea of him, I mean he is mostly known for social fights and his artistic view (very different from seonghwa, who is seen as a woman, literally, and mingi who is seen as a sex icon, those are more harmful to one's mental well-being and the readins reflected that)
personality
work is a HUGE part of hongjoong's personal life, his friends are co-workers, he relaxes by working, he has fun by working, this guy is a fucking workaholic. hongjoong may find some relief in letting other's guide for once, not making decisions or being democratic. his love language may be acts of service and quality time, as he may enjoy doing things/chores when spending time with friends, specially creative ones and mindful discussions. he may act as a sort of therapist for other members and friends hehe for relaxing, he may enjoy spending time with friends and family, anywhere as long as they're together, he gets to get out of his head a bit, his family is his safe space. and likes to think about life in a "glass half full" type of way, to not be overwhelmed by the negativity that all and any things in life can bring, hongjoong likes to focus on the brighter side and what he can do to change the bad side. he enjoys art as well, it's undoubtedly a hobby of his, we don't need tarot to say this haha. hongjoong may enjoy being around children and animals, parks, water spots (rivers, beaches, bridges, etc) or any family related stuff, he may find a type of bliss and see a type of innocence and beauty there that he doesn't anywhere else. hongjoong loves his job a lot, so that's what he does to have fun too kkkkkk he often enjoys being with his members and maybe the trainees in his company, he loves to play games but I think specially mobile games cause you can bring them anywhere. hongjoong loves to study about different aspects of his job, to learn different things about the world outside of seoul and/or korea, he may also be a very spiritual or religious person in privacy as I got some cards related to that. he may have a specific set of moral rules and standards that he likes to follow, believe in and study about. when totally alone, hongjoong feels he can finally be his truest self, his most genuine and raw version, it feels liberating in a way. he does a lot for others in daily life. although he enjoys it, it's nice to have time to look after his own well-being and stability. he's mostly focused on his inner child, making him feel safe and fulfilled. he doesn't care a lot about being alone, definitely not an introvert or a neurodivergent so if you heard any rumors about that 🙅♀️🙅♀️🙅♀️ kkkkkkk just joking, I'm being silly 😛😝 but seriously, he doesn't seem to care about being alone, it's nice for a change, he's not the type to be scared of his own thoughts either, he'd just rather be with others because it's fun. when he's alone he may just distract himself, and do whatever there is to do or watch tv, talk to himself. he may like to use alone time to think about himself as an individual too, to try to separate his feelings from others' and, again, may be a bit spiritual!
this is the most stable and calm member I've read, the most consistent energy throughout the entire reading and very comforting in the private section, specially towards the end.

That's why, whenever anyone asks me at this point 'have you heard of (insert crazy Gwynriel theory)?" I PROBABLY have, but I pay them exactly zero attention. I don't engage either. Because this whole thing has jumped the shark so badly that there is no coming back from it.
The disconnect between their fantasies and reality is entirely too great. It can't be bridged at this point.
We just have to sit back, wait for the next book to come and hope it will end the mind boggling insanity that is this fandom.
It's embarrassing. Can't even tell RL people that I read and like SJM. because I dont want them to look into this and then ask me, are you okay?

Don't Write What You Know, Write Genuinely
One of the most common pieces of writing advice other than “show don’t tell” is “write what you know”. It’s said so much that I think it’s lost a lot of meaning, and people tend to only focus on the literal meaning of ‘write about things that you know about’, which would completely erase fantasy, sci-fi, or just about any slightly fantastical fiction.
So rather, you should think of it as ‘write genuinely’. Connect with yourself to connect with your readers, create emotional ties to your work, write with empathy, write what you know.
There’s three things we can do to help connect us with concepts/places/experiences we don’t know, that’ll allow you to basically write whatever you want. Here’s what I do:
Research
Anything you can learn about what you’re writing about can come in handy. I tend to avoid scholarly articles or Wikipedia when researching because I find having a list of facts doesn’t help as much as having a library of experiences. If I’m writing about California but have never been there, I could learn that rain is pretty uncommon and temperature averages however much during the summer, or I could read about someone talking about their childhood summers in heavy heat and icecream that melts faster than they can eat it.
Essentially, unless you’re writing something with the intention of educating others—don’t worry as much about the facts, look for more about the feelings. Blogs, vlogs, personal journal entries, and other pieces of fiction is where it’s at.
2. Substitution
This is a method I learned in directing (created by Lee Strasberg) that’s a little controversial when using it with actors, but since we’re using it for ourselves it’s fine. Essentially, if actors are attempting a scene about a situation they’ve never been in before (I’ll use the example of moving out for the first time) the director will ask them to recall a situation with similar emotion even if the situation was different.
So in our example, if you haven’t moved out yet but are writing a scene where your character is leaving home for the first time, you might be able to emotionally connect to that scene through recalling the emotions you went through the first time you went to sleep-over camp. Or the time your parents left you alone for the weekend for the first time. Anything with the similar emotions you imagine the situation would bring up (fear, anxiety, but a sense of freedom, excitement, unsureness).
The reason why this is a bit of a controversial technique in directing is because asking actors to recall or share painful memories to get into a scene can be very upsetting or uncomfortable for them, so if you’re a director, be cautious with this!
3. Experiencing
Of course, this all comes back to what we talked about a couple weeks ago. Experiencing to know more. The more you know, the better you can write genuinely about it—so go out and gather some unique experiences!
