i will never be done defending just for once as one of the best songs ive heard from starkid so far. ive flipped through a few of the older non hatchetfield musicals and its STILL towards the top of my list. maybe its because shes ME in another world. if id switched schools earlier, or been "too gay" or "too smart" for the boys in fifth grade. if my shoulder had never healed and i had to quit dance years too early. just for once is a gorgeous, incredible representation of what it feels like to watch everything, even your own life, happen, watch it all from the outside, and never be able to take charge of it.
ruth fleming is a wonderful, weird, gross character and not enough people are cheering for her. in this essay i will

I don't remember if you did or not, but do you have a post where there's like a family tree or something for all your RWBY things?
I want to be able to follow along, but it's a bit confusing.
If you do, could you give the link, please?
Funny enough, I don’t. If anyone has a good website for those family tree diagrams I’d love to know.
Until then, I’ll just make a simple list right now because asking about my ocs will always give be boundless energy. I’ll try being brief. If I write a name that has the last name of the main ship in the au, I trust I don’t have to explain who the parents are.
Lasting Embers AU (Dragonslayer)
Jacquelyn Frost
Parents aren’t important aside from being deceased and her mom being the former Winter Maiden (Vol7 didn’t exist yet)
Jael Frost
Biological daughter of Jacquelyn and Adam. The younger sister of Sienna Frost
Sienna Fost
Adopted daughter of Jacquelyn and Adam. Older sister to Jael
Biological parents and older brother are deceased. Happened when she was very young.
Sienna is not her real name. She doesn’t remember. (It’s Jasmine)
Yujin Xiao Long
Only daughter
Lie Tenzen
Ren and Nora’s only son.
Canary Branwen
Daughter of Qrow and Winter.
Qrow passed away when she was like nine. (Don’t quote that age I don’t have my notes with me. She was a kid)
Not a fan of Ruby (Her Cousin)
A fan of Yujin (Also her Cousin)
Twin Snowflakes AU (White Knight)
Nick and Summer Schnee
Fraternal Twins. Brother and Sister
Sparrow Branwen
Winter and Qrows adopted son
Eliza Marigold
Only daughter of Henry Marigold
Mom took hush money and left after birth.
Henry was not the one who gave her hush money.
Valerie Valkyrie
Nora and Ren’s only daughter
Veronica Belladonna
Blake and Yang’s only daughter.
Blake was the one with the bun in the oven.
Miscellaneous (not a OC name)
This Au has a child for Robyn, Cardin, and a couple others. They don’t really matter too that much but they exist. Most notable is Max (Cardin’s kid) and a little girl named Ruth
Premonition AU (Knightshade)
Lucas Belladonna
Peach Rose
Daughter of Ruby and Weiss
Not related to Lucas in any way but they’re close.
Serendipity Karuma
Also goes by Serenity
Parents are alive but not around
Older sibling but doesn’t see the younger one
Rosebud AU (Lancaster)
Dustin Arc Rose
The oldest of three siblings
Raised by Cinder and Neo
Not a fan of his biological parents or siblings
Has silver eyes
(I probably should’ve called him Dustin Fall but oh well. I’m not changing the tags)
Carmine Arc Rose
Middle child technically, but she doesn’t acknowledge Dustin as an older brother.
Has silver eyes but wears red contacts
Only the grownups in her family’s circle know her real eye color
Cousin of Kovu
Garnet Arc Rose
Youngest of the three siblings
He’s just a lil fella
Kovu Belladonna
Son of Blake and Yang
Older cousin to Carmine
Yang had the bun in the oven
Aero Amitola
Son of Ilia and Sun. (I refuse to explain myself here)
Bird Boy
Mona Paulo Furem
All you really gotta know about her parents are that they’re horrible and her mother is reason Mona is the way she is
Has a younger sister. Barely talked about.
Does not live at home or keep in contact
Miscellaneous
Ren and Nora run an orphanage
Oscar is Ozcar and has been for decades.
Side note, there’s a a child named Levi Belladonna that’s Ruby and Blake’s kid. He has no au. I just thought he was neat. Maybe one day.

funeralia remains one of my favorite episodes for several reasons. one of which is that rowena flirts with cas who has a polite gay panic at the thought of being flirted with by an attractive woman. (but you can tell that he's definitely pleased by the attention) cas' "you NEVER go to parties" to sam is funny because it either implies that he definitely DOES go to parties and is shaming sam for not doing the same. or cas just DOESN'T go to parties and is STILL shaming sam for not going to parties. either way, it's cas being a bitch to sam, which is my favorite thing in the world
and then rowena's dance scene! ruth is KILLING IT and i love the idea that rowena just has her muscle boy to travel everywhere with her
"i'm gonna get a beer. you want a beer" "no" "i'll get beer" and then he gets cas a beer. and cas DRINKS the beer. peak husband behavior. i will never cease loving them. dean's "just don't get dead again" sounds (and comes off) like a very brusque dismissal but it reveals his VERY REAL fear that cas is going to die. the widower arc lives on because cas has never been that very obviously dead before. dean's still a little traumatized from it and he continuously implores cas not to do anything stupid etc. and to cas it sounds like dean just doesn't trust him or thinks less of him, but it's dean's way of pleading with him: don't die. i can't do that again
i love jessica the reaper. she's so perky!
dean is so proud of his shelf in death's library. and he should be! he's the specialest boy!
I love this conversation between naomi and cas. they're SO passive aggressive. well. cas is aggressive. naomi is just that horrible mother who is NEVER going to give you the validation that you want. naomi calmly nodding while cas lists out her crimes is PEAK BITCH behavior and i love her for it. "i'm sorry goes a long way" and then naomi just nods. UNREPENTANT QUEEN i love you for your many war crimes. they really did drop the "heaven is powering down" storyline didn't they? i think they mention it a handful of times in s14, but then... nothing! they sent dean winchester to a heaven that's powering down!
rowena's redemption arc was handled pretty well. she goes from completely chaotic evil to chaotic good and it's believable every step of the way. this scene, where rowena acknowledges that she was never going to kill sam and that she's changed... I JUST REALLY LOVE ROWENA OKAY
i'm fairly ambivalent on billie as a character (though i do LOVE her as death) but lisa absolutely KILLS this scene. she somehow manages to perfectly combine compassion with brutality and the end result is GORGEOUS. "sometimes life is unfair" and everything that follows is a masterful treatise on the nature of grief and how to deal with it and it came from thee supernatural. supernatural is a SHOW! "everything ends" otherwise known as the thesis for this show
THIS EPISODE! THIS EPISODE!

I'm not saying I love the donor storyline at all, but it is what it is, so I gotta wait for the payout. I hated Eddie leaving the 118 last season also, but the payoff was good. For me, at this point, I think it's more that it was told messy. I imagine they wanted it to be the cliffhanger? But by doing that again told messy. Here are my reasons...
Eddie, I actually don't fault his initial reaction for 2 reasons. In his world, "sperm donor" isn't exactly a word that would tackle you. He's besties with Hen and Karen, after all. Second, he also found out in the same moment Hen has known. So Buck chose not to tell him. I think no matter what, it's logical for him to have been shocked and taken a moment to get to the real issue of it it all.
Maddie, see above because it applies to her. Sloppy pacing of a storyline because they want her reaction for the back half.
But the biggest issue is Buck because I don't understand what he's thinking. I walked away thinking he sounded naive, and that made me disappointed. The impression that he will golden retriever out and over step with them. However, I wasn't sure last season how he would react to Eddie leaving, and he exceeded my expectations there, so fingers crossed.
I guess I could be wrong but I'm just trying to give some hope to anons. Last season had the same pacing problem to me also. I'm not sure I love this new style.. The potential of the arc though could lead to some pretty amazing thing though.
If the idea is bringing Buddie full circle, then it has the makings of a pretty good confrontation between them finally. But maybe I am being just as niave as Buck and will hate to conclusion too. Till then, I remain hopeful.
Hi Nonnie! Thank you for the ask.
Regarding most of this, all I can say is I agree, and it's a part of what's a bit frustrating about this storyline. Regarding Buck last season, I think it's implied he was a little lost puppy in denial for a couple of months that happened off screen, between 510 and 511, and where 5b entered is exactly when he was starting to accept that this was really happening. And then he got drunk, and while drunk, kissed Lucy. Which, I kind of find it amazing to see I'm getting more asks about the donor storyline this season than about her last one, and maybe a part of it is that it didn't stretch for as long? Maybe, IDK, but I guess it says something about how much the sperm donor storyline is stirring people up. But absolutely, remaining hopeful is a good way to go about it!
If I may, I'll also add in this ask with some similar themes:
I get people being frustrated with the Buck storyline. Trust me, I do, and I am. However, now that it's here, I'm hoping it could very angst. You write so as a writer can't you see what the potential could be.
For instance, we meet Conor in Buck Begins when Buck discovers he was "born for defective body parts." Now, if something happens to the baby, it will just reinforce the idea. Especially having Conor word it like that, I came and asked you for bodily fluids.
Finally, Buddie talking about the will revelation. Eddie not understanding why Buck doesn't realize he's a father. Buck expressing he feels he's a back up plan.
Or you guys were talking Fried Green Tomatoes the other day. Could be as soft as just that scene where Ruth offers to leave so Idgy can settle down, and she replies I'm as settled as I want to be. In Buddie terms it could just Eddie being like why are you giving up your chance as a family. And Bucks response is like Idgys, I already have one.
Again, I have no clue how this all goes, but now that it's here, I hope we get some sort of scenario like above. I'm not trying to make it all about Buddie, but those boys need an intervention!!
Hi Nonnie! Thank you as well.
I wanna start by saying that, while 911 is def not the Buddie show, it’s totally okay if that is the main thing for you. The way I see it, life is hard enough as is. Fandom should bring us joy and a bit of rest from the hardships. So whatever makes you happy about the show, is legit. If it’s only Bathena? Legit. Only Chim? Legit. Only Buddie? Also legit. It is an ensemble show and that’s good to keep in mind for your own adjustment of expectations, but if you want to? You’re absolutely allowed to wanna focus on Buddie without having to apologize or explain that. And yes, they do need an intervention.
Now as for the sperm donation story, looking at both of these asks together, it sounds like maybe there's an impression that I’m very upset by it. It’s incredibly kind of you both if you wrote me to comfort me by offering ways that it can be good, but I’m honestly not that upset. I wouldn’t be posting about this storyline that much (or maybe even at all) if I didn’t keep getting asks about it. I’m not very fond of it, there are parts that are frustrating because I'm not fond of the direction, and 'coz even if the show was gonna tell the story, it could do a better job of it, but I also don’t think it’s a disaster, and I believe how I’ll end up feeling about the whole thing overall depends on how things will unfold in 6b. And I have said that there are good directions this could go in, but yeah, it really all depends on the resolution (like many stories TBH... sometimes a story starts great and then the resolution is so bad, it ruins all of the good build up). Which brings me to what I always say about speculations, that I prefer to stay away from them. I don’t wanna build them up by dreaming about all the good stuff a story can bring, I don’t wanna get depressed by thinking of all the ways the story might disappoint me. I’m okay with stating how I feel about what we’ve seen so far and then just... waiting and seeing what happens next. I do think remaining hopeful is a good thing! And I'm happy to be sharing your asks so everyone can see the potentially positive things that might come our way in 6b.
I appreciate your kind anons! And whatever you do or don't celebrate, have a great day! As always, here's my ask tag. xoxox

henry higgins started out as a nice lil secondary character in the first season of murdoch mysteries
and he was cute, and he was funny, but pushed to the background usually, just a joke and a helping hand when needed. but they kept pairing him with george, they became the best of friends, and we saw more and more of henry, and he was fun, he was stupid and jerky at times but he was loyal and he did what was right and he loved his friends, and he loved george the most because they were best friends!! they were so worried when the other was hurt!!! and they did everything together!!!
and in those ways henry's so believable and loveable, and for that i love him.
then in season 11 he got together with ruth! and they were silly and ditzy and sweet and perfect for each other, and they got married, and even when ruth lost her fortune henry loved her, which proved that he was marrying her for her and not her money and all that sappy stuff, and they had a baby and she's so cute and i love her and henry!!!!!! and you can even see the effects of fatherhood on him, he becomes more competent with police work, he worries, he cares!!!
then in december i started this fic, and george was the main character, and the ship is henry/george, because why not? i see it, they love each other they're best friends. and i got really invested in my fic. it was beautiful, an amazing idea about one of my favourite musicals and i loved it so much. and i ended up shipping henry/george more than i initially had.
because i loved my fic. and i loved henry.
it's not a big tag on ao3. 33 works as of the time of writing this. i read through all the ones i could tolerate. it's kind of funny, because george and henry were that genre of ships that you know isn't canon, that you know will never be canon, but they're such good friends, they're so close, they're so lovely that you can't help but keep in the back of your mind. they're not the "it's canon (if not only in our hearts)" ship, they're the "it's a lovely idea" ship. because murdoch mysteries is not a show known for its queer rep, this show's queer rep is terrible and there was no way henry and george could be canon. i imagined they loved each other. that was enough.
but. episode 13 of season 15 happens. sigmund freud (FREUD OF ALL PEOPLE) comes to the station house and reads henry's letter to george and asks about it. henry says what it is, and freud says "your lover's name is george?" and henry's like no george is my friend and freud: "you like to say his name don't you" HHHHHHHH??? freud is a dick and an idiot but that's so fucking romantic? and then at the end of the episode??? he tells brackenreid and watts about it like a joke and brax is like "even a broken clock..." and watts just stares,,,,
like what the fuck man. this little constable, who used to be just this tiny kid who made jokes and could hardly pull anything off alone without messing it up, just played for laughs, ends up with this amazing arc, he loves his friends, he loves his wife, he loves his daughter...
and he loves george.
and it's so weird, because... i got into murdoch mysteries in december of 2020, watching the episodes all out of order as reruns aired on my cable provider, because my friends already really liked and recommended it. they informed me beforehand that emily is canonically bi, and watts is canonically gay.
i know second/third hand that when llewellyn watts was comfirmed as gay in early 2020, the fandom collectively lost their minds. because watts had always been incredibly queercoded, and watts being gay was just confirmation of what the fandom had already decided, already known to be true.
but that wasn't the case for henry. no one shipping henry and george would really have gone as far to think "this is canon". but. the show acknowledged that henry loves george.
and it makes sense. it makes all the sense in the world. henry loves george. henry loves george. it doesn't even invalidate other canon relationships; henry loves ruth, he loves their daughter, and george loves effie newsome. but henry loves george.
and so i was propelled into a state of wonder and disbelief. (did i somehow manifest this with my fic?) why does this affect me as much as it does? why does this secondary tiny constable being canonically implied to love his best friend break me as much as it does?
it was at this moment that i realized that henry higgins-newsome was my favourite character.
this stupid show that hardly knew what it was doing made me care about the comic relief more than any of the main cast. they made this secondary tiny constable important. and canonically bisexual. maybe it's my own little happiness over unsignificant people being significant, and discovering yourself, and happy endings. and i love henry for that. so i say canon bi henry higgins??? to let everyone know.
tl;dr

I saw Black Panther: Wakanda Forever last night in IMAX and here are my SPOILER-FREE thoughts:
- fun fact first: the first Black Panther was the first MCU film I ever saw, so it has a very special place in my heart and hearing about Chadwick's passing 2 years ago hit hard...
- that being said the way Ryan Coogler, Marvel and everyone else who worked on this handled Chadwick's passing is nothing short of inspiring. This film is a beautiful love letter to not just Chadwick and his legacy, but also T'Challa's character. It's beautiful, painful, emotional, yet full of hope 💜
- now, I thought the movie was perfect! I am still a little at a loss for words really...
- I cried my absolute eyes out, I cheered and clapped, I laughed, I gasped, and I smiled. It was a real rollercoaster of emotions for sure
- in terms of the story, I really do not know where to begin... So much happens, it's crazy... I don't want to spoil anything obviously but I'll just say it's a beautiful story of legacy, grief, and culture
- even though the movie is emotional, I genuinely laughed at some of the comedy in this. It is really nicely balanced!!!!!
- the cast is incredible across the board. Everyone is amazing!!!! Just everyone, the real standouts for me were Angela Basset (she is coming for her oscar!!!!!) and Letitia Wright! Incredible, but truly everyone in this cast brought their A-game!!!
- speaking of Letitia, let's talk about Shuri for a second. Shuri's arc in this film is so amazing and Letitia just nails it! Massive respect for how she had to step up to the plate here.
- I also enjoyed the new characters! Namor was a really good antagonist to the plot and I loved the exploration of his people and Talokan was very well realized. Riri was great, loved her relationship with Shuri, and I am more interested in her series now too!
- the soundtrack and score are incredible once again! (as expected ofc hehe)
- VFX-wise, I thought it was really well done and the cinematography was gorgeous. Especially Wakanda was just so well done again, it was so amazing to return again
- action scenes are really good and thrilling!!!! Already looking forward to seeing them again!
- Ruth Carter deserves another Oscar for costume design. EVERYONE LOOKED GORGEOUS! I guess that is also a shout-out for the hair & make-up team 😍
- a lot of this movie can be spoiled and I already saw clips circulating of the film on the internet, so be warned! There are a lot of genuine surprises in the film and I REALLY hope no one ruins them for you!
- I saw it in IMAX 3D and it was a great experience! Hoping to watch it in Dolby Cinema as well!
- ofc, you know the drill, stay after the credits 👀
I cannot wait for round 2 on Saturday ✨
I guess there is only one thing left to say: WAKANDA FOREVER!

I love this comic so much. We meet a down-on-his-luck self-hating guy, Richard Rory stranded in the swamp without gas and he meets a woman, Ruth Hart who’s being pursued by a biker gang cause she stole their money. Or did she?
Tumblr media
It’s heavily implied that the leader of the biker gang and the ex of Ruth (his name being Snake) had stole the money and was blaming it on her. Yeah his name is a little on the nose. But hey one of the main antagonists of this book’s name is F.A. Schist. Snake does have a pretty ironic and brutal death at the hands of his beloved chain. He takes a swing at Man-Thing and it gets stuck inside of the swamp monster. We also get introduced to a new villain working with F.A. Schist, Professor Slaughter who has built a metal box filled with discs that shoot millions of lasers at the victim. And they spring a trap on Man-Thing by playing a piercing sound coming from the box that Ted will want to stop and destroy. Man-Thing gets trapped in the box and is shot with the rays and when all looks lost, he uses the chain in his torso and starts smashing the discs in the box which allows him to leave. He throws the chain and it hits Snake in the head, killing him instantly. I didn’t mind Man-Thing falling into a trap because he is basically a shell with glimpses of humanity from Ted. I love how Steve Gerber characterizes this “monster” and builds the mythology of how this creature operates. This was a simple story with some fantastical technology that pushed the limits of believability at times but ultimately I loved it anyway.
Man-Thing #3-4
Tumblr media
Man-Thing #3-4 written by Steve Gerber and pencilled by Val Mayerik and inked by Jack Abel
Tumblr media
Man-Thing destroys the metal box and then battles some crocs to save some people. I love Val’s art and one of the things I’m sad about is that there’s a new artist starting on issue #5. Anyways, we got introduced to a new villain who thinks he’s a good guy which is the hallmark of great villains imo, The Foolkiller!
Tumblr media
In a similar vein to The Hangman from Werewolf By Night (see my most recent WBN post) we got another vigilante but this time it’s a religious zealot with a purification gun. A Zorro wannabe, The Foolkiller calls people fools and then kills them with his laser gun. I’m glad they made a Zorro joke cause I immediately thought of Zorro after seeing his costume.
Tumblr media
One of my favorite moments is after Man-Thing saved the people from the crocs found F.A. Schist who was on the run from Foolkiller on escaping in a jeep and Man-Thing threatens him to take the people with him. It’s just a great moment. I love this character. It’s weird that Foolkiller will give someone like Schist 24 hours to repent but won’t give the same opportunity to his other targets. But I think it’s there to point out his hypocrisy. He believes and worships god but kills anyone who he wants in the name of god. It’s a great way to show the hypocrisy of religious zealots. How they pick and choose from the Bible to punish or bully others. This is another storyline that really reminds me of what we’re dealing with in our current times with constant mass shooters who are mentally deranged psychopaths passing some kind of religious (a lot of the time) or political executions on innocent people. I might be reaching but I think they did a good job with Foolkiller here. I honestly liked this story arc more than The Hangman that I recently discussed. It was a great story arc and I couldn’t wait for Foolkiller to die. Again though like with Snake, he had an ironic death basically at his own hands with his gun ricocheting. But I didn’t mind it here although it was very coincidental. I have an idea that Marvel couldn’t have their heroes outright murder bad guys and that’s why they often have ironic things happen so they don’t have to show it. Punisher was still a villain at this point (I think) so they hadn’t introduced an anti-hero vigilante who murders bad guys.
Marvel Two-In-One #1
Tumblr media
Marvel Two-In-One #1 written by Steve Gerber pencilled by Gil Kane and inked by Joe Sinnott
And we end this post to talk about a crossover between The Thing and Man-Thing in the first issue of Thing’s series: Marvel Two-In-One! Thing sees a newspaper with Man-Thing on the cover and heads to Florida to fight with him because he’s the only Thing that can have that name. I’ll admit this was a really stupid premise even though it’s written by one of the writers who I’ve really liked from what I’ve read from the 70’s in Steve Gerber. But I’ll say the art by Gil Kane was fantastic. I love the cartoony look to his art and when Molecule Man was in Citrusville transforming molecules was awesome and reminded me a little bit of Doctor Strange art. Molecule Man is the villain in this issue and I really liked his origin here and he’s a very powerful character that we’ve seen be used in recent marvel events. His costumes absolutely sucked though. Also, they mentioned the word porno which I was shocked by especially coming from this era. I will say Molecule Man’s weakness being he has to hold on to his wand or he’ll die was a lame weakness but he is really powerful so you have to introduce some way to beat him. I’m glad we didn’t get the cliche trope of superhero vs superhero in this issue which is something that bothers me (see my Avengers vs Defenders post). Also I loved seeing Ben Grimm and Ted Sallis in their human forms working together. It does end in a really hilarious way by Thing giving the wand to a kid. I laughed my ass off reading that. Overall it went differently than I expected and I enjoyed the villain and the chemistry between Ted and Ben really worked for me. Next up is a team up between Ghost Rider and Spidey!

Hello again! I'm the co-writer (and much more) of Absitnthia, the unapologetically queer indie JRPG in development by Team Bewitched, and I think it's time to meet our leading characters!
First, let meet Sera, our POV character.
Tumblr media
When Josh and I were first revising drafts of the overall plot and character arcs, Sera wasn't planned to be a lot more than Freya's adopted little sister who learns to come into her own. But, after one round of revisions, it hit me that Sera is only primary character who never has any kind of romantic or sexual involvement with anyone, and I started wondering why that was. And then it hit me--Sera doesn't WANT any partners! That's right, not only is Sera learning how to be a badass warrior who can stand up to anything, she's also asexual, aromantic, and very happily unpartnered! And yes, it absolutely will come up as part of her character. Don't confuse that for being anything else, though. Sera is empathetic and wishes for only best for her friends and family in their own love lives, even hoping everyone else is enjoying their own adult fun time.
Now let's meet Freya, the protagonist who drives most of the action.
Tumblr media
I'll say up front that I have absolutely loved shaping and writing this character. Freya is everything I always wished to have in a lady protagonist when I was young: beautiful but classy, badass but kind, resolved to her path but woefully imperfect, and also very sapphic and canonically transgender. Part of what I've loved about writing Freya is that she's complicated, as any real person truly is. Her outlook on life and her actions in the story are heavily motivated by personal experiences, but she's never 100% correct. In fact, sometimes Freya might just be absolutely wrong in some of her decisions, no matter how wounded she may be. I truly hope to return to future Team Bewitched projects to writer her further, because I am completely in love with how she develops throughout Absinthia.
Onto Jake!
Tumblr media
When Josh told me in the early writing he was considering making Jake a trans man, but felt worried it would be too many trans characters in one story, I was beyond happy to give Josh a hard push into making it canon. And just like with Freya, it definitely comes up a time or two. One of the things I love about Jakes is that he really is just such a GUY. He's the living embodiment of the word impetuous, and exploring where some of that comes from has been a lot of fun. And even though parts of Absinthia's script are still under revision, it's been interesting and exciting both for me to write a same-gender romance from a man's perspective. Will Jake grow up a little and save his boyfriend some trouble in the future? We can hope.
Let's meet Thomas!
Tumblr media
I don't normally write characters who are more reserved and analytical, but it's fun to break that mold sometimes, and Thomas has been a lot of fun to write. While I can't say for sure yet how it will come up in dialogue, Thomas is technically pansexual (and a POC to boot!) and loves Jake more for his personality than his parts. One of the things I find endearing about Thomas is how he really is about the only person who can handle Jake's energy, and it really is so sweet. And did I mention how much I love that Thomas kicks just as much ass as everyone else, despite not being a melee oriented character? Let's just hope that Thomas' patience for Jake holds out in the long term.
Onward to Ruthea! (Character bust not done yet)
Tumblr media
Ruthea is such a fascinating character to me, in that she's evolved so heavily from not existing at all in early outlines, to being one of the most important characters in the story. She also provides a direct link back to Ruth and Gwen from Knight Bewitched, what we consider our flagship title. Some of the Ruthea-specific scenes are still under revision at this time, but I'm already so dearly fond of this character and I absolute cannot wait to see what happens to her by the end of Absinthia--and hopefully beyond! Just, please, Ruthea...don't break my daughter Freya's heart. (Again.)
And finally, our antagonist Lilith!
Tumblr media
Sometimes you want to cut loose and write a bad guy who's bad, and Lilith has definitely scratched that itch for me. Lilith is sarcastic, manipulative, emotionally abusive, and completely unconcerned with the effects her actions have on others--and she loves every moment of it. She's been such a blast to help write that, despite being in her second game now, I kind of want to have her back as the bad guy one more time in future projects. But, two is probably enough, and it's been a lot of fun to see how she's evolved from her introduction in Celestial Hearts.
And those are the leading characters from Absinthia! I hope you've enjoyed reading this as much as I've enjoyed writing it. If you like what you see and you'd like to see more, or potentially support our project, please head over to our Kickstart campaign and check out all further details there.

I picked this book up at random on a recent trip to the UK and hoped that it was the first in the series- it was!- and looked forward to starting it. With good reason.
The plot of the book and premise of the series is very interesting and very similar to the TV show Bones (one of my favs) so I was looking forward to The Crossing Places.
I've recently gotten very into murder mystery books- and this one did not disappoint. It seemed like a bit of a dry start but this is also the first book by Elly Griffiths that I've read so that may just be her style of writing. The book was very plot driven and I was deeply invested in the story line.
I appreciated the interpersonal relationships between the characters, though they seemed a bit underdeveloped. This could be because it is, objectively, a shorter book- meaning there's less time to build super rich backstories. Nonetheless, I did really enjoy all of the characters. None of them seemed to be filler characters, except for one of the police officers near the end; he seemed to just pop up when a new officer was needed, but I'm not super irked by it. There were a handful of little easter eggs about both of the mysteries being solved here- and looking back they were very well placed.
I will say the one thing that did bother me was the constant comments and focus on Ruths body weight. It didn't seem to add much to the story, but I can appreciate that it may be part of a character arc for Ruth as the series develops.
Overall, I loved this book and I just ordered the box set on amazon because I desperately need more of Ruth Galloway.

SNOWPIERCER S3E6 THOUGHTS: IMPEACH LAYTON
No I don't even care actually I hate him.
Not just because he's killed Pike but because he's so goddamn self righteous about it. If any of you guys have watched AoT, and know of Erwin Smith's character arc (best morally grey leader ever), you'll understand what I mean.
Ruth thinking it was all a misunderstanding and she could "clear Pike's name"... I'm in pain.
Also since I mentioned aot, if this was an anime Zarah would have jumped in to save Layton or Ruth would have jumped in to save Pike. In any case, they would have ended up getting stabbed instead. Now that I think about it, that's a good fic idea... (Don't ask me why I constantly think in Anime Terms. It's just who I am).
And ofc she's gonna blame herself. Of fucking course. Kudos to Pike for not saying he's doing it for her even when directly confronted... but even the implication, the knowledge of it, is enough to drive someone like Ruth insane. She's SO gonna blame herself.
This episode basically confirmed that they really did love each other, that they were just...afraid. Especially Ruth. And now they're never going to get their chance at happiness because Pike was STUPID. Let's be real here, the core of the problem is with Layton, but Pike acted with the clear intent to end up dead. He truly believed the best part of him was dead, there was nothing for him to hold on to, and he wanted to go out at least trying to set things right, to prove that Layton is not fit to be the leader any longer.
Also the fact that he said he would never hurt the baby. Also Zarah idgaf about your ugly cgi doll, fuck you.
(yeah no ok I know she was scared and that's completely fair, I just don't like Zarah in general lol).
This week is mostly gonna be me screaming about Ruth and Pike but also I loved the little details about the Tail traditions. Good to see they remember Old Ivan even after all of this. Also hey Astrid's alive, good to know.
ALSO MILES. HE GREW SO TALL. HIS VOICE GOT DEEPER. MY BABY SON GREW UP.... I MISSED YOU MY CHILD!!!!! I MISSED YOU SO MUCH!!!! I'm so glad you didn't also die of influenza.
Carly's and Alex's interactions were adorable actually, also kinda gay, I ship it. (Though I will remain an Alex/LJ stan forever)
I feel real bad about Wilford and also I'm very angry re: Audrey, but after everything that happened this episode she can honestly go fuck herself (or Till ig).
Speaking of, the little interactions with Till and LJ. Big Sis Till is back and I'm loving it. No Os tho :((
I hope Roche survives at least. Glad to see him trying for Carly.
I love Lights so much and I wish she ended up with Till bc they're great together.
Asha is a mood, I too would like to hide in a dark hole with my comfort object in order to avoid people. She doesn't have as big of a role as I imagined though. At least not yet.
I can't even bring myself to explain why I'm so mad at Andre. Like the fact he literally only agreed to fight Pike because Pike threatened to expose his lies and destabilise his influence/leadership based on said lies... I think that's what really made me go against Layton. He didn't care about solving any of this, he just wanted to buy Pike off as usual, and when he realised he couldn't, and that Pike knew he was bullshitting the entire train, he decided to fight to the death. This is the biggest issue with his leadership and why he's no longer fit to lead.
Winnie putting her lil doll with Pike's dead body.... AND RUTH IS PUTTING THE BOMB IN THAT DOLL IN THE PROMO FOR EP7??? FUCK ME.
Also I've said that already but goddammit Ruth is just not allowed to be happy huh.
Closing this rant off with the fact that the drinking scene between Ruth, Roche and Till was gold. Just a few seconds, but honestly, vibes. I want a scene of them getting piss-drunk together in the next season. I'm talking WASTED.
Also I hope my prediction won't come true but I feel Ruth will start acting like Roche now. Just...more contained. She has a good poker face, unlike him.
Anyway. Till (haha) next week. Also if the show writers even CONSIDER killing Ruth off, I would like to formally announce that I will find you and I... I... I will steal all your snacks! So you better leave my wife alone!! >:(

The Halloween Apocalypse Rewatch Thoughts
This is wayyy too long and rambly but I want all my dumbass thoughts in one place so:
Something about that first scene where they’re hanging upside down felt really awkward. I think it was the dialogue? One of the few moments where I actually feel and don’t like the decrease in writing quality for this era.
If they were tryna give Thirteen her own Allons-y or Geronimo when she said ‘Alley-oop’, it didn’t work. Doesn’t have the same ring to it.
That was probably the worst Scottish accent I’ve ever heard and I’m obsessed with it. That whole handcuffs thing makes up for the questionable beginning.
I will never get over how Chib started Series 13 with having the Doctor and Yaz not only land on a bed together but land on a bed together while in handcuffs that need someone to say ‘what a relief’ in order to unlock them.
The two old white guys are probably the only people we see in this episode whose story I couldn’t really give a fuck about. But I have a feeling that will change when we actually focus on them more rather than seeing them, what felt like, unnecessarily in this episode
Dan’s first speech to those people in the museum is not good. Not sure if it’s the writing or the way John says it but it felt really off.
‘The late Dan Lewis’ better not be fucking foreshadowing I stg
Swarm’s regeneration is so cool. I can’t wait to find out more about him and like.. how/why he’s talking to our Doctor and not whichever Doctor (I assume Ruth) he is usually in some kind of conflict with.
But also, he knows that the Doctor gets her memory wiped so maybe his Doctor went through all their regenerations and he, for whatever reason, knows about it? And is now in search of another version of the Doctor he can harass? I am so confused. But like, in a good way. I want to know how this all works so badly.
This also does get me thinking about like. I know that obviously the reason the Doctor has never met someone from their other lives that were erased up until now is because the Timeless Child hadn’t been invented yet so obviously the Eleventh Doctor was gonna meet a forgotten version of him in an episode but that is one of the things that is kinda a problem with the TC arc for me, at least a little bit. Because if there are God knows how many other versions of the Doctor running around the universe, then our Doctor would surely have come into contact with one of them accidently by now. And I’d say the only solution would be to have comics/audios/books where previous incarnations of the Doctor meet erased versions but obviously that wouldn’t work because then Thirteen would have had to not be surprised at seeing an unknown version of herself in FotD. Idk. It’s just. If we’re saying that every version of the Doctor has had a pretty similar life - they grow up and then run away to travel - the Doctor never having met another version of herself is very unlikely. But also, maybe every version of the Doctor isn’t so similar that they would bump into each other? Like, our Doctor loves Earth. Ruth was on Earth but there was no indication that she was particularly fond of it or humans. And we know she doesn’t have the same life as our Doctor because she spent however long working for the Division. So then I guess it makes sense that our Doctor has never bumped into a forgotten version of herself, because the forgotten versions would have had lives that made sense for whatever the norm was on Gallifrey at that time, if that make sense, rather than the same life our Doctor has. Like, Ruth!Doctor wasn’t going round marrying Liz the First or whatever, she had to work. Because the Divsion was a Big Deal during her time. But now, in our Doctor’s time, the Division is less of a big deal and our Doctor was pretty much free to fuck off Gallifrey and never go back if she didn’t want to. Anyway. This really started out with me having a bit of a problem with the TC only to reason myself out of it. Cool. I’ll go back to the episode now.
‘I’m fine, the TARDIS is fine. We’re all fine.’ Sure, Jan.
Dan is just a nice guy, huh. I love his ‘What’s the point of being alive if not to make other people happy’ line because in theory that’s a good way to live. But not if you don’t take care of yourself first. And Dan has definitely not been taking care of himself first. I hope we see him figure that out during this series.
Dan and Karvanista are an iconic comedy duo.
I’ve seen some drama about the Doctor and Yaz being shocked that Dan has a decent laptop when he’s clearly struggling with money and idk, I kinda get why people would maybe be annoyed but also, I just don’t think it’s that big of a deal? I think the main issue is that that laptop doesn’t even look that good lmao. So it seems like they’re judging him for owning, what seems like, not that expensive of a laptop. Like, they should have given him the latest fuckin Mac or something, that costs £1000s . That would have been more of a suspicious thing for him to own I think
I don’t really care about Azure, I mainly care about Swarm, but I do kinda wonder where she comes into it. Because we know Swarm has history with the Doctor so does that mean Azure does too?
‘But it turns out the man is a dog’ COMEDY
The way Yaz gets like.. almost growly kinda feel like Mandip is doing a bit too much?? Idk.
I wonder how long Yaz has been calling the Doctor out. Like, is what we saw in this episode the first few times she’s done it or has Yaz been doing this for months and the Doctor is still trying to deny that anything is wrong? I’d assume it’s been a while because Yaz seen pissed lmao
Obsessed with how the Doctor barely even tries to come up with excuses when Yaz calls her out. Like, she knows lying is a waste of time because Yaz knows something is up. But she also must know that Yaz will call her out but will drop it at a certain point, so the Doctor doesn’t need go out of her way to come up with something elaborate. Because she knows Yaz won’t keep going on, she’ll just bring it up again in a while and they’ll basically have a repeat of the same conversation over and over again.
Also I hate how both times Yaz calls the Doctor out, they get interrupted by something/someone rather than them actually ending the conversation on their terms. Like, if Claire didn’t show up then how would the convo had gone? It feels like a really annoying way for Chib to give us something but also give us nothing/no resolution, idk. Hopefully this doesn’t keep happening in every episode because that would irritate me.
Yaz being so hands on is very interesting to me. Like, we never saw the fam co-pilot, not even a little bit, as far as I can remember. But now Yaz could probably do everything without the Doctor. And I mean, it makes sense, they’re been travelling alone for a while, Yaz spent ten months staring at the controls on that other TARDIS and probably learnt a bit on her own. But still, it’s kinda a huge jump from the Doctor’s pov. Like, what made her let Yaz get soooo involved when the fam weren’t involved? Idk. Maybe it has nothing to do with the Doctor and everything to do with how Yaz is more obsessed with the Doctor after that ten month break than she was when it was the four of them, yanno?
Yaz is probs the most Doctory that any companion has ever been. Maybe even more than Clara idk
‘You know what, Yaz, maybe I don’t share everything’ is one of my fave lines because it’s the Doctor kinda hitting back at Yaz for being ‘nosy’ without just full on having a go at her and telling her to drop it. Like, it’s the most the Doctor can do without them having a proper fallout with each other, which I’d assume the Doctor is really not interested in having since every time Yaz calls her out she tries to stay as out of it is possible. Which is hard when you’re literally being directly spoken to lmao
The way the Doctor is low-key tryna guilt Yaz into shutting the fuck up by bringing up how many cool things she’s been showing her. Wild.
I want to know what’s going on with Claire so fuckin bad. She interests me the most, after Swarm.
Actually kinda annoys me that the Angel keeps its hands up the whole time it’s coming after Claire. Pretty sure they literally don’t work that way. Its hands should be gradually moving down and its face should be getting more angry the closer it gets, right? It shouldn’t be two inches from her face with its hands still up. Because the whole point is that the Angels are reaching out to touch people and send them through time. Keeping their hands up surely just makes it harder for them
Observation Outpost Rose was a choice that almost annoys me because Chibnall will have known how people were going to react to seeing ‘rose’, even if the context was just the word rose and not the name Rose. And he could have made that ship be in the shape of literally anything else.
Can’t say I care much about Vinder right now tbh. I think partly because I don’t like the idea of getting yet another companion, even if he isn’t like, a proper companion. Idk. I’m sure he’s cool. And I do wanna know what’s going on with him. I just don’t want him to join the team.
Swarm in that dark doorway is actually scary as shit
Someone on Twitter said they don’t understand why Azure was acting shocked/sad when Swarm killed that guy in the bed if it was just pretend and Swarm was the only one there to see. But I don’t think it was pretend? Like, it seemed like she really was kinda confused about what was going on for a second, and then her ‘true form’ came through either as if she was remembering and that made it happen or Azure was kinda trapped inside and took over completely? Idk. Either way, I don’t think it was a mistake like that Twitter person seemed to think it was. I think it means something.
I really thought from those promo pics that Azure and Swarm were married lmao
Hopper virus mention. Ryan I miss you :’(
You can tell that Yaz has this conflict of like. she loves Doctor (in whatever way you want to see it) and wants to help her but is also genuinely getting annoyed at her for hiding so much stuff and I love it a lot.
Not to complain about something that doesn’t matter all but I low-key don’t see the need for this episode to be Halloween related. And idk why but having Halloween in the title of an episode isn’t my fave. Chib is not the best at naming episodes. But Once, Upon Time SLAPS so.
The way the Doctor goes off at people when her companions aren’t there to see is chef’s kiss
Yaz is basically the Doctor and the last time a companion was basically the Doctor she got killed by a raven and then ended up being an immortal space gay so I’m sure this is gonna end well for Yaz.
And I wonder how aware the Doctor is of Yaz’s Doctorness? Even though Thirteen isn’t very reactive or whatever, I think she is very aware of what’s going on around her. She’s not an idiot.
Yaz and Dan are already a 10/10 duo. You know Mandip said her and Jodie’s friendship is just a lot of them insulting each other? I feel like that is what Yaz and Dan are like.
The designated human thing is actually so cute and very Doctor Who, I love it.
Dan coming in all shouty and Yaz being like, ‘we were supposed to be quiet’ is so good. And also Yaz was defo tryna sneakily hear what the Doctor was talking to Karvanista about and I don’t blame her tbh.
The doors appearing everywhere in the TARDIS is so cool
‘It’s bigger on the inside’ has always been a Big Deal so Thirteen saying it like she’s almost annoyed to be saying it interesting as fuck and people with bigger brains that me have spoke about it so I won’t bother. And I also don’t even know what to say other than I’m obsessed and this must be on purpose, right? Like, I am one to overthink every DW thing we ever see but like, this must be on purpose, surely
I hope Dan gets his house back to normal size at some point??? I also hope he brings it out/mentions it every now and again lmao that would be so funny
The Sontarans are so ugly (affectionate). For a while i was like oof, I don’t know how I feel about this design. But honestly, this new design is closer to what the original Sontarans looked like and that’s cool
Yaz answering all of Dan’s questions instead of the Doctor. And the Doctor not even looking like she was going to attempt to reply to anything Dan said. Like, either she knew Yaz was going to say something for her or she was just going to leave Dan hanging. I feel like it’s both. She was gonna leave Dan hanging and is probs grateful Yaz is there to do the talking for her. Which is also interesting because the Doctor is notorious for not shutting the fuck up
THE CLOISTER BELL
The shot going into the Doctor’s eye is cool as fuck
Jodie is so good at sad eyes
I think Swarm was just tryna be intimidating and freak the Doctor out but how close he got was a lil 👀 if you ask me. And I don't think it actually was meant to imply that the Doctor and Swarm have a thing but I do think how close to her he is willing to get and just the general way he was acting with her does make their relationship really interesting. Master vibes but hopefully not too much because we already have a Master and I don’t loove the idea of basically introducing someone who serves the same purpose in the Doctor’s life.
Yaz and Dan holding onto the Doctor and the Doctor not tryna get them off her. Either she is cool with touching now (doubtful), she has other things to think about and telling them to get off isn’t a priority or she still isn’t into touch but she’s so fucked up rn that she’s like a lil touch won’t hurt, as a treat. I imagine Thirteen is like. not into touch but is also touch-starved as fuck
I wonder if when we see Sonya in episode three she is gonna be like ‘yeah, this big dog thing tried kidnapping me ???? what was that about?’ That would be so funny
Azure luring Diane into a spooky house?? Why???? It’s all connected bro
The way the Doctor shouts that she hates not understanding was like.. genuine anger idk. Like, she sounded actually pissed off
Dan: We’re safe in here. We’re sealed in. Every Door: *opens as wide as possible* Dan: *should have looked into the camera like he’s on The Office*
Seeing the Doctor crack out the vortex energy feels like it should be a MASSIVE deal because the last time we saw it, it was a MASSIVE deal but this time it was.. nothing. Just shows how mad the Flux is I guess
I liked that ep a lot more on rewatch. I think when an episode airs and I don’t know what to expect, I basically spend the whole time just waiting for when the Doctor is going to be on screen again but now that I’m watching it for a second time and know what happens and when, I can be more chill while watching it? Idk, it’s weird.
Anyways, great ep. Big fan. I feel like it’s gonna be hard to rank these episodes along with the regular DW episodes because it’s just so different and doesn’t tie everything up in a nice bow like episodes usually do.

SO’s US Book Tour : Alabama
Tumblr media
Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café
By Fannie Flagg
When I decided to start reading my way through the United States, it seemed obvious (and perhaps boringly so) that I’d just go through the list alphabetically.  And when I started researching which book I’d like to begin with, there seemed to be a lot of good choices -- specifically, the most famous (possibly) of Alabama fiction - To Kill a Mockingbird - which I, and everyone who's been through a US high school English class has probably read.  A lot of the books I came across felt a bit heavy, and I wanted to start this journey out on a somewhat lighter note.
The reason I kept coming back to this one was that every blurb seemed to mention that it was about fun and friendship and sometimes murder, and I’ll be honest, that last bit paired with the praise of comedy did pique my interest.  The murder ends up not being so funny, but the book ends up being far more fascinating than I originally thought it would.  I didn’t know much about it when I started -- only that I had heard of the film but being too young for it when it came out -- and no one in my life ever talking about it, I hadn’t sought any information out about it.
The book splits its time between time periods, which sort of reminds me of Forrest Gump (another Alabama based book), with an old lady sitting on a bench telling her life story, and the story of a small town close enough to Birmingham Alabama to eventually be swallowed up by the urban sprawl; mixed with a bit of that pro-women narrative of something like a League of Their Own.  But unlike Forrest Gump, whose narrative is mostly built on nostalgia for a time long gone, Fried Green Tomatoes still has themes that can resonate today.
Set in the present day of 1987, Evelyn Couch is a middle-aged woman who doesn’t know what to do with her life.  She’s lived her life entirely by the book, and according to how women should act and be.  But one day she goes to visit her mother-in-law at a home when she meets Mrs. Threadgoode (Ninny) who begins to tell her long tale of the town of Whistle Stop and all of its residents -- most notably the Threadgoode and Peavey families -- those closest to running the cafe.  I really loved Evelyn’s arc in the novel.  She starts out being this really sad sack of a woman who is lost and lonely.  And Ninny provides her with an actual friendship, something she’s lacking completely, and helps her turn her life around.
It’s fascinating looking back at the late 80s, where Evelyn is slowly starting to come into her own as a woman in her late 40s, but still somewhat confined by the fact that the 80s still had their own slew of issues regarding women.  Evelyn begins to push back on all of it -- and while clearly, now in the 2020s, women are still fighting, but we’ve come a long way since 1987.
Still, it’s nice to see Evelyn grow as a person and a woman, and the fact that a friendship - and specifically a friendship with another, older woman - is nice to see.  Too often women are portrayed as young and competing, and the fact that this novel seems to celebrate the friendship of women, especially at different ages, and especially between older women, seems like such a thing of value.  Going with the theme of age -- I also like that it portrays women over 40 having interests and hobbies, and explores the idea that women’s lives don’t end if they get married and/or have children.
The main crux of the story, however, revolves around the Threadgoode family -- most notably Ninny’s sister-in-law Idgie, a young woman who has tomboy-ish characteristics and could give Huck Finn a run for his money.  The thing about Idgie, however, and something that I was not expecting -- at ALL -- was her relationship with Ruth Jamison.  They’re lesbians, Howard.  The relationship is not explicit in any way, but it’s not subtle either.  Idgie and Ruth both declare their love for each other in romantic terms, and end up spending their lives together running the cafe.  I was not at all expecting a story about a couple of lesbians in a book about small town Alabama in the 30s, and yet, here I am, pleasantly surprised to see it as one of the threads.  I do wish there had been more defining mentions of it in the book, but for 1987, I think it’s rather bold to have it at all be the main love story in the novel.
For what it’s worth, doing some research, I found that Fannie Flagg is a lesbian, so it’s nice that her voice of experience was able to help create such vivid characters.  The fact that Idgie and Ruth have a lesbian relationship is somewhat known by others, but never really commented on.  The book idealizes it a little -- but it can be passed off as a great friendship well enough that it retains believability.  If anything, my one nitpick would be that it falls into the narrative of ‘kill the gays’ with death of Ruth cutting her life short, but since her death isn’t the end (it’s hinted at early on), nor does it prop up anyone else’s emotional story -- but is another part of the ‘spanning a lifetime’ part of this epic tale, I’m letting it slide a bit.
The book does go in-depth on the whole Threadgoode family, and what life was like during The Great Depression in small town Alabama, and how small town life changes as the years tumble into the 50s, 60s, and even 70s.  People come into your life, and people leave it, and the world around you changes as you begin to romanticize the time of your youth.
A bit of the book is also dedicated to talking about the Peavey family -- a black family who works for Idgie at the cafe.  I wasn’t sure how the race angle was going to play out, the term ‘colored’ and the n-word are used judiciously -- but used in the context of the time period.  While there were times when I could tell it was definitely a book written by a white woman, the book never shied away from the difficulties black families had (and still have) in the south.  The nice thing is that the black characters were just as complex, just as fleshed out, and just as interesting as any of the white characters.  They weren’t caricatures or stereotypes -- they were people just trying to make it through life the same way white people were, only with a lot more difficulty.
While the book kind of acts like a slice-of-life character examination -- it does have a major set piece in the murder of Ruth’s husband Frank, and who did it.  The mystery is not anywhere near the focus of the book, but all the threads of the book seem to tie around that one incident.  This is where I really enjoy Flagg’s storytelling.  At first the book bounces around from one piece of narrative to another, but the unfolding of why and how and what of this murder mystery buried within the character study is really a thing of beauty.
Before I forget, the heart of this book is a celebration of southern (Alabamian) culture -- and one of my favorite aspects of this book is the fact that there are over a dozen recipes for good ole fashioned southern cooking in the back.  Food is another theme throughout the novel, and it just makes me smile that like any good southern household -- they can’t let you leave still feeling hungry.
I really enjoyed this book -- much more than I thought I would when I picked it up.  There’s a lot packed into the 250-ish page book, and handles the themes it presents rather well.  It’s an easy read, and while light in tone, doesn’t shy away from its heavier subject material.  I would very much recommend it!

Penzey Spices -- loves Loki!
Bill Penzey, owner of  Penzey Spices in Wisconsin, sent this to his online customers today.  I thought it might be of interest to those of us who gather here:
Like everybody, Jeri and I look for shows to watch. Sometimes things are recommended, other times something just pops up and you give it a try. In that "just give it a try" category was the English version of Wallander. It’s well acted and you care about the characters but its four seasons really are a long, dark spiral. Ultimately, in the very last moment it ends in a way as a cook I think you would appreciate, but the road there is hard. If you were to watch it you should give serious thought to watching the episodes in backward order, that way the show’s arc would be ever more hopeful, ever brighter.
Somewhere watching the show, towards the end of the first season or beginning of the second, I actually paused the show and said to Jeri, “That guy.” As I pointed to one of the junior detectives in the back of the scene. “Why won’t someone give that guy a show? I could watch him read the phone book.” With the way he almost never got any lines this would mean him reading the phone book silently to himself, but I was okay with that. In the bleakest of shows he somehow managed to deliver humanity with just the look upon his face. Most every scene he was in became something better, something more decent just because he was there.
Flash forward 10-12 years and that actor, Tom Hiddleston, now does have his own show, Loki, on Disney+ and since the universe responded to my request, I feel obliged to put in a plug for it. Plus, it’s starting to cook. New episodes air every Wednesday. Last week’s episode was a breakthrough and in many ways was a retelling of the Grinch story where Loki’s heart grows not one, not two, but three times larger simply by coming to understand firsthand he is someone worth loving. In some ways it reminded me of the also very worthwhile Elton John biopic Rocketman. Good stuff all around.
And of course this is one of those shows with a mystery behind about who really is in charge and what they really are up to and those shows never end with viewers happy with the big reveal. As I was explaining to the kids just last week, as much as it may well seem like naming a street after a living person is a really good idea, in the moment it rarely is. But even if, as hinted at, Loki only gets this “one brief shining moment” to be good and find happiness within the Marvel Universe, it’s still a good moment to be a part of. Obviously Loki has some work ahead of him and obstacles to overcome if he is to prove he is indeed a good friend to Möbius, but I’m rooting for him.
Earlier in the season in a restaurant scene that wasn’t really a restaurant scene, there was a discussion over what to order and one of the options was potato skins. This started a discussion in the Penzey house. Jeri and I will be married 19 years next month and to the best of our recollections in all those years I’ve never made her potato skins. The kids have never even had them. So, start with larger baked potatoes the way you like to bake them. If you are new to baking potatoes, wash them, poke them with a fork 8-9 times all around and then place them in a 400-degree oven for about an hour turning once while baking. They are done when they “give” when squeezed, or if you prefer to use a thermometer when the center reaches 205 degrees.
You can bake these a day in advance, but they are even better the same day. Let them cool for a bit and then cut potatoes into thirds lengthwise (this is the fun bit :) ) then scoop out the center part of the potato leaving about 3/8ths of an inch of potato still attached to the skin. In the old days I would butter the inner part of the potato, now it’s a drizzle of olive oil. There are trade-offs in life. Then a good sprinkling of Sandwich Sprinkle followed by the shredded cheese of your choice. Inspired by Loki visiting 1985 Oshkosh, Wisconsin in the second episode, I went with three cheeses: mozzarella, 2-year Cheddar, and pepper Jack. Wisconsin is fun.
Next comes bacon or no bacon. Usually I’m not a crispy bacon kind of person, but for this if you want to use it, precooking it to crispy and then crumbling is the way to go. And if you picked up the Potato of Love as part of our June Rainbow Pride giveaway, this is a really good spot to use those. Then it’s just a matter of placing them in the oven until they reach your desired level of melty. I like them just a little bit browned, but the kids had not had them before and we wanted these to be liked.
While they cooked I mixed 1 tsp. Justice Seasoning with 1/4 cup Sour Cream and Jeri cut up and lightly mashed a medium avocado to which we added 1 and 1/2 tsp. Salsa & Pico Seasoning and served these on the side. We had a hit! Jeri said we should do these more often. And Grandma Ruth, who loves nothing more than sacrificing for her grandkids, quickly grabbed seconds before the kids even noticed the supply wasn’t endless. This made me so happy!
If you have access to Disney+ please consider giving Loki a try. To get people to cook they have to see the value in caring for one another. There’s not a lot of shows out there that radiate this. Ultimately as the show itself says: “Most things in history are kind of dumb and everything gets ruined eventually.” But for now we have Camelot quotes and DB Cooper and people caring about each other.
And if a segment of this year’s Emmys is to be Tom Hiddleston, Owen Wilson and Sophia Di Martino quietly reading the phone book to themselves I would be good with that. But Wilson has a whisper like no other. They probably should consider using that. And maybe if Wunmi Mosaku was up there with them as the one who isn’t getting many lines now but should have her own show ten years from now, that would be good as well. Progress matters.
Thanks for reading, thanks for being our customer,

25 Days of Actress, Part One!
Inspired by Be Kind Rewind’s video series for the month of December, here are the first movies I recommend you check out, if you haven’t already. These are all movies that are pre-2000, and feature a performance by an actress that I enjoy (and the actress did not win Best Actress or Best Supporting Actress for the role).
These are in no particular order!
1. Olivia de Havilland in The Adventures of Robin Hood
Yes, if you follow my channel, you know that I love this movie whole-heartedly, and will find any excuse to talk about it.  And Olivia is one of my favorite actresses, so I figured this was a perfect place to start!  Her Lady Marian is kind, strong, and smart; someone who starts out believing one thing, but realizes (and admits) when she’s wrong and does her best to try and help.  And given the the way ingenues were usually viewed in movies of the era, I have no doubt that a lot of this is down to Livvie’s performance.  She could take a two-dimensional character on the page and give her so much life onscreen!
Tumblr media
2. Genevieve Bujold in Anne of the Thousand Days
As much as I planned to try and keep all this movies on the more light-hearted side, I could not ignore this performance.  Genevieve Bujold was once asked about if she had seen the other actresses who have played Anne Boleyn, and whether she could think of an actress who could do her justice.  She thought about it and said “Anne is mine”.  And I kind of have to agree,  I haven’t seen another actress play the role the way she does...it really is a definitive performance.  She nails Anne’s girlish free spirit and fiery temper and transitions beautifully into the harder Queen Anne, who is simply trying to stay alive.
Tumblr media
3. Ruth Hussey in The Philadelphia Story
Now, this really is Katharine Hepburn’s movie....her performance as Tracy Lord is iconic and no one could have done it better.  But I want to give a little love to Ruth Hussey as Liz Imbrie.  This woman gets some of the best one-liners in the entire script and she delivers them with such ease.  Half the time, she seems to just throw them away, but still completely nails it.  And also, she is a really developed for a character that might normally have been hidden in the background.  As much as my red hair says that I should play Tracy, I think I’d have more fun playing Liz.
Tumblr media
4. Audrey Hepburn in Charade
My favorite Audrey movie!  Audrey is absolutely charming as Regina Lampert, a widow who unbeknownst to her, has $250,000...and the men who helped steal it want it back.  This is one of those movies that every time I watch it, I discover a little something that I hadn’t noticed before.  She and Cary Grant have fantastic chemistry...and I love the fact that they made Regina the one doing the romantic chasing, not Peter/Alex/Adam/Brian.  And I think a lot of people don’t realize how strong Audrey’s comedic timing was.  And this is a great movie to discover that!
Tumblr media
5. Joan Crawford in The Women
Now, I could have easily picked any of the actresses in this film...there are so many to choose from!  But there is something about Joan Crawford’s performance as Crystal Allen I just love.  She is the antagonist, but there is something almost sympathetic about her...especially at the end.  When you really think about it, her story arc is actually really depressing.  Also, fun fact: I based my performance as Ursula in The Little Mermaid off of Joan’s performance in this movie!  Right down to the eyebrows.
Tumblr media
6. Judy Garland in Summer Stock
My favorite Judy movie! :)  I mean, Judy was great in every single film she appeared in, but this one was special.  I love her arc of starting thinking that one life is for her, and then discovering a love for a completely different kind of life (and a different kind of man).  Judy and Gene Kelly have unbelievable chemistry as Jane and Joe....whether they are dance battling in the Portland Fancy, or having a quiet moment on the front porch, it just radiates off the screen.  And I read that initially MGM wanted to cast Mickey Rooney, as a sort of throwback to Mickey and Judy putting on a show in the barn, but I am so glad that it didn’t work out that way.  I don’t think the movie would have been the same classic it is today.
Tumblr media
7. Jeanette Macdonald in Rose Marie
I have been a fan of Jeanette Macdonald and Nelson Eddy movies for as long as I can remember.  And while Maytime is probably my favorite, this one is probably their most well-known...and it’s definitely one of their most fun.  Jeanette plays an opera star who is known for being incredibly difficult and temperamental, who then has to rough it in the Canadian wilderness to find her brother before he leaves.  There is so much wonderful banter between these two, and their chemistry absolutely crackles.  If you believe that they were in love offscreen, this was apparently at the happiest part of their relationship and it really shows.
Tumblr media
8. Shirley Jones in The Music Man
This is one of the best movie musicals ever made, IMO.  It is pure candy confection and just a lot of fun.  It’s one of those movies that is guaranteed to make you smile.  Shirley Jones plays Marian Paroo (Marion the Librarian), an “old maid” who is trying to figure out what’s up with this so-called band leader that blows into town.  This movie felt like a transition for Shirley Jones, away from the wide-eyed ingenues of Rogers and Hammerstein to the more mature roles she played later in her career.  Marian seems like an ice queen, but she is actually quite vulnerable and Jones balances the two beautifully.
