Rank the non-Steve/Tony installments of the MCU?
GOOD QUESTION! You said “installment” so I’m counting TV too. Also thank you trello for helping me do this. Rankings were based on my personal enjoyment, objective quality (inasmuch as any art can be judged objectively), and rewatch value.
-Ragnarok
-Black Panther
-Daredevil
-GOTG 2
-Jessica Jones
-Luke Cage
-Doctor Strange
-Defenders
-Iron Fist
-Ant-Man and the Wasp
-Thor: TDW
-Runaways
-Captain Marvel
-Spider-Man: FFH
-Agent Carter
-Ant-Man
-Cloak and Dagger
-Thor
-GOTG
-The Incredible Hulk
-Inhumans (bad, but I finished it)
-The Punisher (good, but boring)
-[ thousand mile drop ]
-Ag*nts of SH*ELD

If Marvel Had Original Songs In All Of Their Projects
The MCU had a remarkable track record of great characters, overarching story arcs and making billions upon billions of dollars. But one thing they lacked is  developing original songs. While they did original songs for The Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 and Black Panther such as “Live to Rise” G”uardians Inferno” and “All the Kings”, 18 of the MCU films and none of the television series set in the shared universe of Marvel characters had musical tie-ins. If I were to do the MCU over again, I’d convince Marvel and their directors to create songs for these films and shows.
Iron Man - Born of Iron by Counting Crows
A Hero’s Destiny by AC/DC.
Path of Redemption by U2
The Incredible Hulk - The Lonely Man by Chad Kroeger and Jewel (with lyrics)
Iron Man 2 - Dreams Like a Reality by Remy Zero.
Thor(2011) - Thunder on Two Worlds by They Might Be Giants
Captain America: The First Avenger - The Fight for America by Rob Thomas.
Iron Man 3 - How to Overcome Nightmares by Owl City.
Thor: The Dark World - Keeping Love Together by Imagine Dragons.
Call To Home by Miley Cyrus.
Captain America: The Winter Solder - Leaving off to Battle by Trevor Hall
A Different World by Grace Potter and Randy Newman.
Guardians of the Galaxy(2014) - Space Heroes by Redbone.
Avengers: Age of Ultron - What Machines Are Made of by Snow Petrol and Demi Lovato.
Find My Humanity by Taylor Swift.
Ant-Man(2015) - Small Man for the World by Matt White.
Captain America: Civil War - Broken Friendship by Jonsi.
Bombing Disaster by Lifehouse.
Starting A War by Finger Eleven.
Doctor Strange - It’s a Magical World by Weezer.
Spider-Man: Homecoming - Hero School by Adam Lambert
Mentor Like Protege by Fuel.
Finding A Hero’s Place by Taking Back Sunday.
Thor: Ragnarok - Journey to the End of the Universe by the Justice Crew.
A Contest’s Win by Jet.
Avengers: Infinity War - Loss of Life by Skylar Grey.
Family and Friends Taken by 12 Stones.
Universal Control by the Jonas Brothers.
Ant-Man and the Wasp - Partners for Life by Justin Timberlake.
Soulmates Found by Ed Sheeran.
Captain Marvel - The Depths of War by Bridgit Mendler.
Where’s My Past by Alessia Cara.
Keeping Secrets by Selena Gomez.
Avengers: Endgame - Start Peace Again by Evanescence feat. Landon Pigg.
Realities Like Time by Alter Bridge feat. Anastacia.
A Hero’s End by  Calvin Harris
Spider-Man: Far From Home- Going Around The World by The Calling.
As for the shows:
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D - Spies around the World by One Direction.
Agent Carter - Agent Next Door by Katy Perry.
Inhumans - Humans out of This World - Barenaked Ladies.
Daredevil - Blind as a Devil by Fall Out Boy.
Jessica Jones - Playing Hero Cop by Ana Johnsson
Luke Cage - Unbreakable City by Sevendust.
Iron Fist - Magical Punch by 3 Doors Down.
The Punisher - Killing the Road by Linkin Park
The Defenders - Protecters of the Allies by Simple Plan.
Cloak and Dagger - Keeping Each Other together by Olivia Holt.
Runaways - Kids and Parents by Justin Bieber.
What do you think of these awesome songs pitches?

It was January of 2017. Our douchepresident had just been elected and I was going through some shit. I had been getting migraines on the daily for long enough that I could only volunteer because I was too sick to hold a job. I started watching Daredevil with my partner, and everything changed.
I liked comic book movies/shows enough, but Daredevil was the spark. It led to a re-watch of Jessica Jones, and then Luke Cage and Iron Fist. It led to anticipation over the Defenders and the Punisher, and every season after. I rewatched these shows more times than I can count.
It got me to start reading comics. I read through all of Waid’s run as I was battling depression and barely functioning. Having an honest representation of what I was going through made me feel like less of a failure and was exactly what I needed.
I became a subscriber at my local comic book store, which got me out of my house and gave me something to look forward to when I was too sick to do much else. My partner would take me on a monthly date to Portland where we made a special stop because he recognized how much it was helping me.
I joined tumblr and met other women who loved this show and comics too. We talked about what was wrong and what was right, we recommended new works. We talked about our real lives. And when I went through a really rough miscarriage, a slew of family problems, and my dad’s stroke, they checked on me almost daily. I love them with all my heart.
But the last thing I’d ever expected from a tv show was an inspiration to write.
I never knew I had that in me, but it drove me to wake up. I got a few comments praising my work on AO3 and was astounded. Every day after that I thought about the stories in my head and I used them to fall asleep each night. And when everything was on fire around me, I still had writing. And you guys drove me to keep doing it.
This news is heartbreaking, but I’ll get through it because I have people who know. People who love me and won’t disappear because our common thread might have been destroyed, but we’d never leave each other. That’s what this show did for me. I can never express enough gratitude to the people who spent their time creating and inspiring.
But I know just how much I needed Daredevil.

Weekend Top Ten #528
Top Ten Moments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe – 2022 Variant
I’ve accidentally started a tradition, and by Grabthar’s hammer, I will leap on it and turn it into A Thing. You see, in the foggy mists of time, I listed my favourite MCU moments; the whole series has been going on so long that you can see how this was my baby list, my boring tiny list, my list with no explanation or creativity. But the MCU kept growing and evolving, and almost exactly four years later I did an update, now with added Infinity War. So, two similar, updating lists, four years apart? Well, we have to do it again, don’t we?
(I also did a special one just about Civil War, which is one of my favourite Marvel movies, but that doesn’t count in these official rankings).
I mean, there’s not really much more to say than that, I guess. This is simply a list of my favourite moments from the fourteen years and counting that we’ve been enjoying the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I guess maybe there’s what we consider “the MCU”; does it encompass shows like Agents of SHIELD, which at least feigned continuity with the movies? Or what about those shows we used to refer to as “Marvel Netflix”, but which now I guess we have to call “the Defenders saga” or something; Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Punisher… those were also meant to be in contunity but that still looks tenuous, even as Disney formally takes them back under its wing and characters begin cropping up in the MCU “proper” (spoiler alert, I guess). I mean, blimey, after Spider-Man: No Way Home, all bets are off, as every prior Spider-Man movie is clearly an alternate world in the Marvel multiverse, and if the trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is any indication, this could very well extend to any adaptation of a Marvel comic, regardless of who produced it. I might as well have included something from The Dark Knight or, I dunno, Ghost World.
(Incidentally, Marvel published the first adaptation of The Transformers: The Movie, so I’m formally including every Transformers movie into the MCU. Sorry, them’s the rules).
Anyway, to avoid confusion, I’m centring this on what I think we can all consider the prime timeline. Everything produced by Kevin Fiege, basically; all the movies (including the three Spider-Man movies co-produced with Sony) and the Disney+ shows. For the time being, I’m still counting The Defenders as an adjacent universe, but as it happens I don’t think any moment there would have cracked the Top Ten, although I do love DD’s corridor fight and the Punisher in prison.
I think that’s it. Ten moments, as represented by a line of dialogue, from what is on balance probably my favourite cinematic universe (sorry, George Lucas). Assemble.
Tumblr media
“I knew it.” (Avengers: Endgame, 2019): really, it could be any moment in the finale – “Let’s kill him properly this time”, “On your left”, “Avengers assemble”, all the way up to “I am Iron Man”. The culmination of a decade of slowly escalating, interconnected sequential storytelling on a scale never before seen, paying off, sticking the landing. But this is the moment that made me holler.
“Is this part of the test?” (Captain America: The First Avenger, 2011): the first time I ever got a bit teary-eyed at a Marvel movie, and every time I watch it I get more emotional. Steve Rogers showing his innate heroism right from the off. And, if you look, Peggy moves towards the grenade too!
“If you can do the things I can, and you don’t…” (Captain America: Civil War, 2016): I could write an essay on this scene, a perfectly pitched and performed interplay between Peter and Tony. I love everything about it, including its summation of heroism, but it’s so great how Peter articulates Steve’s argument back at Tony without realising. Layers! Like an onion! Or an ogre!
“What is grief but love persevering?” (WandaVision, 2021): this show gave us most of the best bits of Marvel TV, including “Agatha All Along”, Pietro, and the magic act. But in fleshing out the scenes between the scenes – the nuances of a relationship mostly told off-camera – it sang, and never more so than this moment of tragedy, love, and friendship.
“I love you three thousand.” (Avengers: Endgame, 2019): what is there to say? Robert Downey Jr’s final lines as Iron Man, his goodbye to his wife, his daughter, and us. The capping of an era. Floods of tears. Just missing out by a whisker: “I’m gonna get you all the cheeseburgers you want.”
“Not a perfect solider, but a good man.” (Captain America: The First Avenger, 2011): another great moment of underplayed heroism, what I like here is Stanley Tucci’s performance. He’s just so good, a nice guy, and he’s so kind. Again, perfectly articulating the noble nature of Steve (or Peter!). A lot of exposition, perfectly handled, and it’s funny too.
“I’m a really good lawyer.” (Spider-Man: No Way Home, 2021): I admit, I gasped when Charlie Cox strode onto the screen. Effortlessly charming, funny, and then… he catches a brick behind his back without looking. Oh, it all just works so well! And it brings Daredevil back! Looking forward to Jessica Jones cropping up in Thor, or something.
“I’m always angry.” (The Avengers, 2012): the first Avengers might pale a little compared to the melodrama of the later instalments, but it’s still a terrific superhero movie. Ruffalo nails Banner/Hulk, and riding back into a warzone, he’s all shambolic cool. Then he tells Cap his secret, transforms, and knocks out on of them flying dragon things in one punch. This was stunning ten years ago. Still rocks now.
“I’m Trevor, Trevor Slattery.” (Iron Man 3, 2013): what a twist! An absolute rug-pull moment that blew minds (and irritated some fools). The revelation that “The Mandarin” is a fiction, a false flag bogey man dreamed up by the true villain, is one thing; but Ben Kingsley’s performance is next-level, all nervous tics, strange accents, mannerisms, and one-liners. There’s even a poo joke.
“I’m Mary Poppins, y’all!” (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, 2017): I wanted to do something about the finale of Guardians Vol. 2, the whole sacrifice and funeral and Rocket crying. After a furiously bombastic previous hour, it’s such a nuanced and subtle ending. But I’m gonna say it all starts with this moment, Yondu saving Quill, floating to the ground holding on to his magic head-arrow. James Gunn strikes the perfect balance between comedy and pathos.
And there we are. I could have found another ten, probably, most notably the “bury me at sea” from Black Panther, and (at the other end of the scale), “Piss off, ghost!” in Ragnarok. And I couldn’t work out how to put some dialogue-free moments into the list: the car chase in Hawkeye, the three Spider-Men swinging, or when the Winter Soldier flips his knife round in mid-air. Oh, and Nick Fury’s gravestone; that was funny. And the gif at the top. Always the gif at the top.
Anyway, the MCU; pretty great, innit.

Marvel Fans are Losing it at Disney+ Removing Netflix's Credit From Defenders TV Shows
Marvel Studios and Disney recently got the rights back to The Defenders line-up of characters that they shared with Netflix back in 2022. Now, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, Luke Cage, The Defenders, and even The Punisher have finally made their way to the Disney+ streaming service. With the move comes a ton of big changes, and it turns out that Marvel Studios and Disney have removed one key detail from the shows.
Marvel Studios has officially removed all of Netflix's credits from the line-up of Defenders series on Disney+, and fans are having a good laugh with it. During the intro of each series it would previously say "Marvel Television and Netflix Presents" and now they have removed the credit entirely. They also removed the "Netflix Original" credit.
Charlie Cox made his return as Daredevil in Spider-Man: No Way Home and is heavily rumored to appear in Marvel Studios' upcoming Disney+ series' She-Hulk and Echo. The actor's return was a brief but awesome cameo that solidified his mark in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Comicbook.com recently had the chance to talk with Cox about The Defenders arriving on the Disney+ streaming service and how Marvel Studio could take Daredevil into a PG-13 direction.
"This was actually when this news that you talked about came out, I was texting with some of the guys from the show and the text I wrote was, 'Born Again,'" Cox told Comicbook.com. "I wouldn't put it past the folks at Marvel to be able to accomplish that. I'm such a fan of everything they've done so far, I wouldn't underestimate them at all, so if they wanted to make a more PG version of Daredevil, I back them to find a way to do where it feels totally in keeping with everything we've done. And maybe there's a little less blood, maybe there's a little whatever, but I back them to do it."
Ugh. PG version of Daredevil... I just... I mean I want to support whatever they do with the character, and Charlie, of course. But, fuck. I don't know that sanitizing Daredevil is the way to go.
I guess maybe if they focused more on the law stuff? Turned it into more of a procedural, bad-guy-of-the-week style? I would watch the heck out of a Nelson, Murdock & Page procedural - I love their dynamic when they're investigating and in court and stuff.
But how to tie in actual Daredevil content - with all the dark places he's already been... It seems like it would take away some of the depth of Matt's character to make him 'safer'.
You'd have to give him safer antagonists too.
I hated how Fisk was portrayed in Hawkeye. Really really hated it. They made him ridiculous and totally neutered the character. He was more threatening in the Spiderverse movie - as a literal cartoon.
So yeah. Count me as skeptical and cynical.

ONE ASK COULD NOT SUM UP MY THEORY SO I WROTE IT OUT.
Tumblr media
this is the logic I have of billy dying in the first few episodes: frank not killing billy at the end of the punisher was a Big Deal. He could have killed him, it would not have sat on his conscience or made him any more of a criminal (I mean already 36 bodies that they know of, like what’s another in that count of scumbags). he'd be righting the wrong he set out to right (avenging the fam), finishing that closure. but instead he kept billy alive, which showed a character development for frank. sure he beat the shit out of him, but billy became an exception, he was allowed to live because frank let him (and I think that stems from his overall character arc in the season and the kindness he let in with micro and micro’s fam. he was reminded of his humanity). HOWEVER not that that Lesson has been learnt, there’s no reason to really keep billy around? he’s not gonna be the Big Bad this next season, I feel like at most he’d be a runner up criminal. Netflix loves to have one criminal that entertains the protagonist for the first half of the season and then The Big Bad for the rest.
Daredevil: Russians/ drug ring - Madame Gao usurped by Kingpin
DD s2: who knows, I never finished it. But I do know that Frank obviously isn’t the bad guy the whole season. He’s the beginning “bad guy” and Matt then transitions to his actual battle for the season
Luke Cage: Cotton Mouth usurped by Mariah usurped by Diamond Back
LC 2: Maria usurped by Killmonger
Iron Fist: this is the most back and forth, but ultimately it seems the Hand (with Bakuto/Davos) comes out on top as Danny’s main enemy over Harold
Jessica Jones: proving hope’s innocence, hogarth’s plots and fighting simpson are all stepping stones compared to Kilgrave
JJ s2: IGH and “mysterious killer” ends up with her fighting her mom? but then they have fam times? I consider her mom the big criminal for her to face (special appearances by the ghost of david ten)
Defenders: Alexandra/The Hand usurped by Elektra
At the end of the first season after Frank constantly reassigns who his antagonist is, Billy becomes the big fight. There’s no way he can continue to be the main threat in season 2 given how badly injured he is and basically broken as a character. Plus there’s no element of surprise anymore of shocking betrayal and such -- his story line at this point has run it’s course. As we’ve seen before big enemies such as the hand can be the focus of a marvel series, especially the Defenders, but they can ALSO be PICKED OFF pretty easily. Once the most powerful players in the board across the shows they are all toast besides Madame Gao (she always be creepin’). Billy, as awesome as his character is and as beautiful as Benny Barn is, has sadly become a Main criminal who has run his course. Maybe he’ll show up in a few episodes, but will ultimately not have the same impact as he did the first season.
Anyways those are my theories!

MCU BINGO!
Tumblr media
Also check out the Schedule Page, FAQs Page, the Prompts Masterlist Page, the BINGOs and Scoring Page, the pre-made Themed Cards Page, and the Posting Template Page
Sign Ups open May 1st
How to play the game:
If you sign up during the month of May, you will receive a personal, randomized 5x5 BINGO card. During sign up you will pick five relationships and/or characters which will serve as the B-I-N-G-O at the top of the card. The spaces will have tropes/AUs/prompts, with a “free space” in the center.
Your goal is “fill” spaces by creating a fanwork using the relationship/character and prompt. This must be a new, previously unpublished fanwork which primarily focus on the relationship/character and prompt for that square. Fill enough squares to get a BINGO and earn points! Earn enough points and you’ll get a “trophy".
This fanwork event is actually a game. You are not competing against fellow fanwork creators, but simply against yourself. You decide how much or how little you want to achieve. Five small fanworks over the span of six months can get you one BINGO and a bronze trophy. Want to do more than that? Go to town! It’s entirely up to you. I encourage you to challenge yourself. Be creative with your pairings! Try a prompt or trope that you’ve never written before! Step outside of your comfort zone a bit (but not so far out that it becomes a negative experience, take care of yourself).
Eligible fanworks and fill requirements:
Fic - 500 words
Must be new work; cannot be previously posted anywhere
Can be a sequel/prequel/timestamp/etc, but should be able to stand on its own
You can link different fills together as a series, but each fill must be posted as in individual work (for example, cannot be all posted together as chapters in one fic)
Art - medium sized (around 400x400 pixels)
Podfic - 500 words
If you are reading a fic that is not your own you must obtain the author’s permission and include a link to the original work
Video - 30 seconds
Fanmixes - 10 songs
Must include a track list with a brief description of how the songs fill the prompt
Cover art optional
Relationships/Characters, how does that work?
This event is for the MCU, which means that any canon character within the Marvel Cinematic Universe and connected tv/netflix properties (Agents of SHIELD, Agent Carter, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Punisher, The Defenders).
Relationships and Characters:
Any two or threesome of canon characters.  Threesomes count as their own unique relationship, so a fill for a prompt in a Luke Cage/Jessica Jones column cannot be Luke/Jessica/Danny. As listed above, “canon characters” are characters in the MCU and extended universe of tv/netflix properties (for non “canon” character see section below on “OCs”). There are no lines between the separate properties, so if Frank Castle/Sam Wilson is your jam, go to town, there’s no need to mark it in any special way. Whatever floats your boat!
You can also include teams: Avengers 1.0 - Tony, Steve, Clint, Natasha, Thor, Bruce; Avengers 2.0 - Steve, Natasha, Rhodey, Sam, Vision, Wanda; The Defenders - Luke, Jessica, Matt, Danny; Agents of SHIELD - (characters have come and gone from the show, so whichever version of the “main team” you define)
OCs and characters who aren’t in the MCU canon (but are in, say, comic book canon): For the purpose of this event OC will stand for “Outside Character”, thus it can include an Original Character or a character who is not in the MCU canon (For example, if you want to write some Tony/Rumiko, you would list it in your signup form as Tony/OC). If you have a character/OC column the OC does not have to be the same character for every fill (for example: if you have Steve/OC you can write one fill that’s Steve/some dude named Joe, Steve/Arnie Roth, Steve/some woman named Beth, etc). The OC label essentially functions as a controlled wild card giving you a range of options. However, the OC label cannot work as a backdoor for you to include 5 extra pairings, you cannot do an OC fill involving a canon character (for example, Steve/Melinda May cannot count in a Steve/OC column).
Characters: In lieu of selecting a pairing, you can put in just one character. However, this is not a carte blanche to ship that character with whoever you want. Single character columns are presumed to be gen. There can be some background relationship, but the main focus must be on the character themselves.
Gen: Single character columns are by default gen, but you can also have gen relationship and team columns. If you want a team gen column, just mark it as such (Avengers 1.0 - gen), this means that the fill should focus on the relationship of the team in a non-romantic/non-sexual way. You can also focus on gen relationships, which should be marked with an & (Matt & Foggy, Steve & Bucky, etc)
In your signup you must list 5 characters/teams/relationships. This list will be randomized, so even with a premade theme card (see below) you will have no control over which relationship/character is attached to which column. Can’t decide on only 5? You will have the option to get new cards with new relationships/characters and prompts periodically (see below). If you really, really can’t decide, then you can list more than 5 characters/relationships, but you will have absolutely no control over which 5 actually end up on the card.
What is not allowed?
Character bashing
Relationship bashing
Kinkshaming
Wank of any kind
Prompts:
The 24 prompts (plus free space) will be randomly selected from the
Prompts Masterlist
. The free space will be left blank, which means that you can choose the prompt you want to put there, but it must still come from the masterlist.
On the signup form you will have the option to veto up to 20 prompts. You can veto less than 20, or none at all, but you cannot veto more than 20.
If for some reason you need more than 20 vetoes, or if you receive a card and find that a prompt has somehow ended up on your card which you find triggering please message me.
If you message me requesting a change to your card I will do it, no questions asked. However, this should be a measure taken very seriously, such as if a prompt is triggering to you, not simply because you don’t “like” it. This game is meant to be a challenge! I encourage you to test your limits and stretch outside of your comfort zone; but I do not want this to become a negative experience, so don’t hesitate to reach out to me if you feel the need to.
If you’re struggling with a prompt, you can always try thinking of it in a different way, nearly all of the prompts could be interpreted in a variety of ways (“detention” could mean a high school AU where the characters are kept after school, or it could mean a canon-compliant fic where the characters are “detained” in prison; “baby animals” could mean that the characters adopt a litter of kittens, or that they get magically transformed into baby animals; or any other number of options). A prompt can also always be the lack of itself, for example “cuddling” could be about someone wanting more cuddling than they are getting, or someone who is touch averse and does not want any cuddling; the sky is the limit!
Getting a new card:
You are welcome to do as many fills and make as many bingos and bonuses with your card as you want. However, if/when you run out of fills/bingos you want to with your current card, there will be an open period during the last week of each month when you can request a new card.
However, you must have completed at least one bingo on your current card. You cannot work from two different cards at once; as soon as you get a new card, the old card is no longer valid. If you are an amnesty sign up, you can request new theme cards during card request weeks, but you cannot request a personalized card.
When doing a second BINGO for your card, or doing a bonus fill, you must create a new work. Even if you made a fill for your first BINGO using a certain square, you must create a new work using the same prompt in order for it to count toward a second BINGO or a bonus. Think about declaring BINGO as wiping your card clean - once you’ve included a work in a BINGO that work can’t be used again, you’ll have to write a new work using that prompt if you want to fill the square again.
So how do I declare a BINGO?
You will make a tumblr “masterlist” with links to each fanwork that applies to the BINGO you’re declaring using this Template. I will reblog your masterlist post, and include your BINGO on the round up post at the end of the month.

2017 Year in Review
Tumblr media
This past year was, to put it mildly, rather tumultuous. For every high point of the year, there seemed to be low points all around it. But now the year has ended, and hopefully, this next one brings more good and a hell of a lot less bad than its predecessor. However, as said; 2017 wasn't all bad, and this is what I've decided to write about today. Finding myself inspired by the myriad of posts about people's top five or ten games, movies, shows, and so on, I've decided to continue that trend and catalogue the media I found to be exceptional, the media that helped me through the ups and downs of these twelve long months we just experienced. Some I may have written about before, and some will be new, but all of them deserve praise and recognition abound...at least, in my opinion. So without further ado; here are my most enjoyed pieces of media I experienced in 2017.
We'll start this article off by discussing a category I haven't really discussed on this blog before - music. The reason I don't usually write about music is due to how disparate my preferences can be for this particular media medium. Some days, I'm all about hard and the heavy, while others I'll dip into instrumentals, jazz, or video game soundtracks. Hence, the music I'll be listing here won't have much of a comparable flow - I just thought it was all pretty good.
This first album ties into one of my favorite games from 2017, easily a contender for my choice for Game of the Year; the soundtrack to the superb indie game Night in the Woods, as orchestrated by Alec Holowka. The soundtrack is beautifully mellow, pleasantly tuned for ambiance. In the game, the music accentuates and emphasizes all of the game's themes, emotional depth, and down-to-earth feel. Out of the game, the soundtrack is perfect for chilling out, studying, writing, or any such easy-going activity. I frequently found myself playing it in the background whilst reading or doing the few articles I wrote, or using it to relax after a particularly trying moment. Continuing the theme of game soundtracks, another that caught my fancy was the Persona 5 OST, composed by Shoji Meguro. An eclectic mashup of genres, the soundtrack bounces between somber piano, energized guitar, and jazz compositions, with a handful of excellent vocal tracks thrown in for good measure. This album is great for a variety of moods or activities thanks to the numerous tones and tempos the music flows between. And with nearly four hours worth of music to sift through, it stands to reason you'll be able to find something you like.
Moving from video game music, another album I found myself enjoying through the year was Alestorm's No Grave but the Sea. If you're unfamiliar with Alestorm, they fill a rather particular music niche; Pirate Metal, a fusion of piratical slang and heavy metal. Alestorm further accentuates their distinct sound with frequent usage of brass and string instruments, as well as a synthesized accordion. I found myself intrigued by their music several years ago when the band released the album Back through Time, and have followed them since. No grave but the Sea is relatively short, coming in at under an hour across its ten tracks. If you're a fan of niche genres, or just a metal fan looking for something new, I'd recommend you give it a listen. Closing out the music section is Linkin Park's One More Light. OML released only a few weeks after Alestorm's No Grave but the Sea but usurped it in my music library almost instantly for a brief time before the unfortunate suicide of Chester Bennington. In fact, I would call One more Light one of Linkin Park's best albums, despite it being the starkest departure from the band's hard rock sound to date. That isn't to say the album isn't heavy, though. One More Light is heavy in tone, as opposed to sound; If you want an example, listen to the premier single "Heavy" or the titular "One More Light", and you'll get a firm grasp on how the album feels. One more Light clocks in at a short but sweet thirty-five minutes, and I would wholeheartedly recommend taking the time to sit down and listen to it in full.
TV shows take the second slot, though I'll be honest; I definitely don't watch a lot of television. Not live, anyway. Most of what I watch is through streaming services, so a few of these aren't technically from 2017, at least not in full. But since I first watched these shows in 2017 it counts. Without further ado, here are my favorite television shows I started or finished in 2017.
Kicking off the television roster is Twin Peaks. If you're unfamiliar with the show, Twin Peaks was written and directed by David Lynch. It stars Kyle MacLachlan as the charming and amusing Special Agent Dale Cooper, a federal investigator sent to the enigmatic small town of Twin Peaks to solve the murder of local sweetheart Laura Palmer. Not much can be said about the plot of this show without spoiling it or just plain confusing somebody, but suffice it to say that all they appear to be. Everybody has a secret, and the show doesn't take too long to spiral into the surreal in typical Lynchian fashion. Twin Peaks initially debuted in 1990, earning two seasons and a cult following that lasted the 26-year gap until its third season released in 2017. Long story short; the show is great - It has intrigue, comedy, a wide cast of interesting characters, and a story that will keep you guessing until the end and beyond. The show isn't without its faults and can be flat out baffling at times, but despite all of that the show and its story is a fantastic experience to behold.
The next show on my list both compliments and contrasts Twin Peaks; Broadchurch. Broadchurch is a crime serial taking place in the fictional (and titular) town of Broadchurch, starring David Tennant as Detective Inspector Alec Hardy, and Olivia Colman co-stars as Detective Sergeant Ellie Miller. The series kicks off by investigating the murder of local youth Daniel Latimer, before moving on through its three-season run to investigate another murder case and finally a sexual assault, all the while weaving a compelling tale of a small town trying to cope with and move on from these horrible crimes. Broadchurch is a heavy experience, with very little levity to break up the tension of each investigation. That being said, It's still an excellent show with a genuinely compelling narrative backed up by the top-notch acting of the cast.
Setting aside the crime drama, we come to the next show - Voltron: Legendary Defender. Technically, the series' first season debuted in 2016, but 2017 saw the release of the second, third, and fourth seasons, meaning it was a pretty Voltron filled year. Legendary Defender is the latest in the long line of Voltron adaptations, following the Paladins of Voltron as they fight to defend the galaxy from the evil Galra Empire. Now I've never watched any of the other Voltron shows, so I can't speak for their quality (or lack thereof). As far as first impressions to a series go, Legendary Defender couldn't be better. Helmed by DreamWorks and Netflix, and written by the creative minds behind Avatar the last Airbender and its sequel Legend of Korra, Legendary Defender was probably the best-animated show I watched all year. In terms of quality, the show is top notch. Excellent voice acting, great animation, and a fun but serious story that has me eagerly anticipating wherever it goes in 2018.
Wrapping up this section are the many, many Netflix Marvel series. This includes Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders, and finally The Punisher. I had already seen some of these before but went in for a rewatch in preparation for all the new stuff coming out in 2017. If you're not familiar with these shows, however unlikely that is, I'll summarize each show in a sentence or two. Daredevil follows Matthew Murdoch who, after losing his sight but gaining superhuman senses as a child, fights crime in hell's kitchen on two fronts; as a lawyer, and as the vigilante Daredevil. Jessica Jones follows former street hero turned private-eye, Jessica Jones, as she tries to deal with the aftermath of a traumatic incident in her past while an old foe comes back to haunt her. Luke Cage follows Ex-Con and titular character Luke Cage as he tries to clean up the streets of Harlem and free it from corruption. Iron Fist follows Danny Rand, boy billionaire and sworn defender of Kun Lun as he tries to combat a mysterious organization known as The Hand. The Defenders finally unites these four heroes for the first time, as they all come together to battle the aforementioned Hand in an attempt to stop them once and for all. Finally, we come to The Punisher, which follows war veteran turned vigilante Frank Castle as he hunts the people responsible for the murder of his wife and children. I won't go into an extended review here, so to keep it simple; Daredevil is amazing (though its second season has some flaws), Jessica Jones is great, Luke Cage is great, Iron Fist is fine, The Defenders is amazing, and the Punisher is fantastic...to summarize, pretty much all of these shows are worth a watch.
Now, as I said at the beginning of this article, 2017 was a pretty shaky year. A lot of ups, and a lot of downs. Many of these ups, at least for me, are in the next category; 2017 was a pretty great year for movies, in my opinion. It was a busy year for movies, but when isn't it? For every one movie I watched, there were three more I had to wait on, but pretty much every film I watched in 2017 knocked it out of the park. From comic book films to horror flicks, each one of these movies takes the cake.
The premier movie for this article is Get Out, one of the contenders for my favorite movies of the year. Helmed by Jordan Peele, Get Out is a genuinely uncomfortable horror/thriller about a black boyfriend meeting the family of his white girlfriend. It tells a heavy but undeniably compelling story, one that keeps you guessing and inspires a fair amount of thought after the fact. I won't go into too much here, but I will say that if you haven't seen this movie, you absolutely should. Speaking of movies that make you think, Bright is up next, the new racially-conscious Netflix movie starring will smith and....no, not really. Actually, The Lego Batman Movie is up next; a goofy, charming, and stark contrast to all of the gritty DC movies that have been churned out over the past few years. This movie was genuinely funny and felt fun to watch...something that can't be said about some of the more recent DC films. I've written about this movie before, and my thoughts today still echo that review; This was one of the best Batman movies I've seen. Following The Lego Batman Movie, the next film on my list is John Wick: Chapter 2. There's not much to say about this movie other than the fact that it's a top-notch sequel that keeps all of the pros of its predecessor, and in some cases, improves on them. It isn't a terribly different story than its predecessor; Somebody messes with John Wick, so John Wick messes back by going on a vengeance-fueled spree. It's an action-filled thrill ride that doesn't disappoint.
Another action-filled thrill ride takes the form of Logan, and....wow. Logan is another contender for my favorite film of the year. The movie serves as equal parts finale for both Patrick Stewart and Hugh Jackman as Charles Xavier and Wolverine respectively, and it does so perfectly. Logan is a shining example of what Comic Book films should aspire to, with an outstanding script, Oscar-worthy acting, and a top-notch story to close out this era of the X-Men cinematic universe. Finally, we come to one of the last movies released in 2017; Star Wars The Last Jedi. I'm sure if you're reading this, you've probably seen this movie. Maybe you liked it, Maybe not. I, however, thought this movie was pretty damn good. One of the better Star Wars films, I think Rian Johnson did well at what he set out to do. I won't say it's the best movie of the year, but it makes my list of favorites.
Finally, we come to the last section of this year in review: Video Games. I actually got to play a fair few of these this year and liked basically all of them. But, this isn't "Year in Review, things I thought were passable". This is "Year in Review, my favorites", and so what follows are my favorite games of 2017. From AAA titles to simple indie games, each one of these had the right amount of fun, charm, and entertainment to keep me hooked and keep me coming back to them time and again.
We'll kick this list off with a game that embodies charming simplicity; Slime Rancher. This game debuted back in 2016 as an early access title but finally released in an official capacity in August of 2017. I didn't think much of it when it came out, just grabbed it since it was free through Xbox Live's games with gold program. Color me surprised, then, when it turned out to be one of my favorite games of the year. I previously wrote about this so you can see my full review here, but what I'll say here is that Slime Rancher is a surefire recommendation on my part. The next two games are anything but simple, at least in terms of story; Kingdom Hearts 1.5 and 2.5 HD (PS4). I had played these games before, on the PS2 and PS3, but what can I say? Kingdom Hearts is one of my favorite gaming franchises out there, and the ability to play it again on modern consoles was a treat. With the release of Kingdom Hearts III on the horizon (hopefully), going back to experience the franchise in full was a fantastic refresher. If you've never played Kingdom Hearts before, getting the modern gen remasters is your best way to experience these games right now.
Following Kingdom Hearts is Persona 5, one of two games I would strongly consider as Game of the Year. I had never played a persona game before this, at least not in full, and this game almost made me regret that. Persona 5 is near perfect, with a great story, smooth and snappy gameplay, and a top-notch aesthetic balanced between its visuals and its sound design. Atlus has a history of making quality games, and Persona 5 is no exception. Continuing from there, we come to Night in the Woods, the second of my two Game of the Year contenders. In fact, were it not for Persona 5, Night in the woods would be the winner for 2017, at least in my book. This is another game I've written about in full and I would recommend reading that review here because I had a fair amount to say. Night in the Woods saw two releases in 2017, once at the start of the year, and once at the end of it. Because of this, the game both kicked off and closed down my 2017 year, and I couldn't have asked for a better game to do so.
That about wraps up my Year in Review. 2017 was a full year for media, and I have a lot to catch up on, but luckily I was able to experience just about as much as I missed. Not everything I did this year appeared in this review, but these were the things that elevated themselves above the competition and took the titles of favorites for 2017. I extend my thanks to anybody who stuck with this blog, or even read just one of my articles in the last year, and hope that the new year is kind to all of you. This year promises to be just as good, if not better for media purposes, so I eagerly await whatever comes next. Here's to a great 2018, folks.

hi!! i wanted to start watching the marvel tv shows but i don't know which one to start with??? do you think i should start with the defenders or the punisher, jessica jones, daredevil etc etc
hi there! i’m assuming you’re exclusively talking about mcu related tv shows (although there are some good x-men related tv shows right now too).
i would actually recommend starting with agents of shield. it was the first marvel tv show for the mcu. i’ve heard that the first half of the first season drags to some people, but i highly recommend sticking it out because i love it so much.
as for the netflix related shows i would watch daredevil, jessica jones, luke cage, and iron fist before the defenders. all four solo series set up the characters for the defenders. also, it doesn’t overly matter, but i would probably watch them in that order. or even daredevil season one, jessica jones season one, and then daredevil season two before luke cage and then iron fist. there’s one character who crosses over between the four (or five counting the defenders). watching in the order that the shows were released make her story more fluid.
after watching everything there i would recommend watching the punisher. again, it keeps it in the release order since that’s the most current show.
also, if you like peggy carter in the movies i highly recommend agent carter. it’s just two seasons long, but has such a strong female lead that everyone should see it honestly.
on top of all of that, hulu has a new marvel tv show that has new episodes every tuesday. that would be runaways. now it is set in the mcu, but it is also on the west coast so doesn’t heavily tie in with a lot.
there is also the limited series that just wrapped on abc, inhumans. now a lot of people have complained about this series and i get it. it could have been amazing, but it’s just good. however, it is heavily influenced by the comics and i enjoyed it for that.
anon, also keep in mind that there is a show upcoming on freeform called cloak & dagger that looks very good and very promising.
i apologize for the long answer. i just love all the marvel tv shows.
(also watch the gifted. you’ll never regret falling in love with it.)

Comicpalooza 2017 Recap
Just got back from Comicpalooza 2017 in Houston, TX and it was a con with a lot of ups and downs.
I am going to link to a lengthy run down of the bad.  Those higher ups with the con security were absolutely abyssmal to people dealing with mental disabilities - not believing them when they said they needed help and being outright threatening.  A high-up manager at the convention was absolutely unaccomodating, refused to believe that the incident occurred, and refused to apologize that it happened.
HERE IS A LINK TO THIS FULL STORY  because it really does need to be heard, but I want to keep it separate from the good things that did happen.
So- Hiiiighlights!
Anyway, most of Friday was spent in the hotel room after getting in and getting the two things done that were a bit time sensitive.
We holed up until that evening beacause one of the things I was /really/ excited to try my hand at after nearly chickening out a few times, and then not sure if I was in the mood to - was a Crossplay Drag Show - not just the costume contest but everyone doing a full on lip synch presentation.  But even after the incident, my wife really encouraged me and bolstered me - wanting to push through and watch me.  We'd been talking since I heard about the event since I read about it on Thursday before the con, and she suggested THE BEST SONG to perform to: a male vocal of "You Don't Own Me" from the Dirty Dancing soundtrack.
I've never done anything like this before - I'm usually Awkward Penguin whenever I do anything in front of crowds and have been trying to build my confidence in that regards.  I usually feel very uncoordinated and awkward when it comes to choreographed movements, but this sounded - SO FUN - and fortunately, the person organizing the event, Bex - was suuuuper nice and encouraging.
My wife got a faboo recording of my performance and I posted it here: My Winter Soldier DRAG SHOW
And holy cow you guys... I won!  I won the "Mr. Comicpalooza" title, complete with sash for the Drag King competition.   As it turns out, I wasn't the only drag show newbie - a fantastic DragQueen cosplaying Black Cat and I talked for a while, bolstered each other up.  She's also just
been dipping her toe into drag - through Halloween and parties and this was her first public foray.  And as it turned out she also ROCKED it and won Mrs. Comicpalooza .
Tumblr media
Awesome photo is from her instagram, Bobbie. Dollie
Saturday things were turning up.
We got to meet up with our good friend @defilerwyrm who recently moved away and spent some time with him and met some of his awesome family, meander the dealer's room together and went to an AWESOME shadowcasting of Rocky Horror done by the After Midnight crew who was most excellent.  It has been probably 10 or 15 years since I saw a shadowcast of the show, and man it brought back good memories.  All of the company were super nice, really enthused to be performing, and man, I forgot how cathartic a bawdry, vulgur production of Rocky can be.
"Janet" was shadowcast by this awesome woman whose costumes were Gaga inspired (and damn she looked like her too), and they had a genderbend Rocky who was a short blonde who was a delght to see pick up their Frankenfurter.  And really, everyone was high-energy and into the production :)
And wyrm's sister who we sat next to knew soooo many of the callbacks that I have mostly forgotten so it was great being able to hear them all so well and really get into the interactivity!
Saturday we also got to do photos with the amazing Mike Colter and Anthony Mackie!
You could tell that Anthony Mackie is in Marvel shape right now for Infinit Wars - not only is he bringing the guns with those arms of his like usual, but man, you could count his abs through his knit henley.  But he was soooo engaging and friendly even for the SUPER FAST photo shoot.  All con photo shoots are very in and out quick - and that's really all I was expecting, but he said hi, Welcomed us, and instead of just assuming a standard pose asked what we wanted to do.  And he grinned when he saw our cosplay and called me "Buckette" (which is awesome, still grinning about that).  I had an idea in mind and was thrilled when he was up for it:
I had to play up the fantastic sibling-rivalry chemistry with Bucky & Falcon since my wife and I were cosplaying, so we went for this "Cap Family Photo"  - I asked to kind of do a play fight pose with me with me in a choke hold - and when he was up for it but asking for kind of his expression/motivation my wife, @shipperhipster said "Can you move your seat up?" And it was on X3
Tumblr media
Mike Colter... man, I have also kind of been nursing a crush on this amazing human being.  He was fantastic in Luke Cage - such a genuine character ,earnest and /good/ person - and still... unf... He has such a beautiful face with kind eyes, and, well, he is soooo toll and thicccccc..  SO I have been saying for a while I really would like to meet him and bet he gives the most amazing hugs (Spoiler: he does!)  So I was still in costume when we met him and not only did he call me gorgeous and gave a great hug, but elaborated a bit more again when we got his autograph a little later - said that the stubble make up was really good - and I made a beautiful man and wondered what I looked like underneath - my wife helpfully showed him a photo and he smiled and said in a very complimentary that I looked a bit like Tina Fey.  We chatted for a bit - he said that filming Defenders was a lot of fun, and that he's excited for the faster plot-paced 8-ep season and that his story arc and chemistry with Danny in the series is good .
Tumblr media
So I was just a bit aflutter.  And so mabe I also had to go back Saturday for a second meeting out of costume.  He recognized me, said of couse he remmebered me from the day before, and got a swoon-worthy photo with him dancing/dipping me *___*
Tumblr media
We also briefly met Jessica Henwick - who is the actress who plays Colleen Wing in Iron Fist (and soon to be Defenders).  She was awesome!  Seemed really enthused to be there, and we talked about really loving seeing strong female characters in the MCU and Colleen is a great character - seeing her running her own dojo and kicking ass.  She personalized the autograph "Power to badass women!" So yes -  even though I wasn't a big fan of the casting choice of Danny Rand ( though Finn Jones granted seemed very nice) Colleen was kickass!
Tumblr media
We also got to meet Pom Klementieff, who played Mantis in GotG2 - and seems just as sweet in real life.  This was apparently her first con and we had been in line early to see her.  She wasn't up for special poses for photos (I had hoped to get a pose of her touching my wife's arm and pointing at me when we were in Steve & Bucky costumes a la the Starlord/Gamora scene, but she was nice about it).
We also went by Jon Bernthal's table (Have I mentioned there were a ton of marvel actors at this con?  Definitely the reason we went! ) - and glad we did.  We'd seen him before at other cons but were getting something signed for a friend this time, and he was very friendly and open.  We congratulated him on getting his own headliner Punisher series and said we were excited to see it/that Punisher stole the show in Daredevil season 2 - and he said he hoped we liked it and that he was so nervous!  I was just... oh my goodness it is so endearing and refreshing when someone who plays a role like that to still get butterflies about doing a good job on a show lead and portrayal of a character.  He also runs a pit bull rescue, and that is amazing and wonderful and we expressed that to him.

Iron Fist: The Most Millennial Superhero So Far
I started by enjoying Netflix’ fourth entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) second-tier superhero franchise. I entered in with the knowledge that an awful lot of people had either beaten it to death critically or merely used the casting of a white actor to play a white comic book character to paint the show as cultural misappropriation.
By episode #4, the enjoyment began to wain. The writing is just bad. Not Transformers bad. Not Titanic bad. But clunky and almost as if the writers were using one of those writing apps that blocks out the sentences written prior to retain focus. So many moments where the characters said and did things incongruous to the moment before that it almost becomes a David Lynch experiment in superhero television.
I liked Colleen Wing (Jessica Henwick) until she lost her mind in love with Danny Rand. Her snarky badass attitude suddenly seemed to evaporate as soon as there was sex involved. I continually like Rosario Dawson’s Claire Temple but her role in this chunk of MCU is confused—is she the perpetual nurse or a badass in training or merely the only adult in the room? The Meachums (Harold (David Wenham), Ward (Tom Pelphrey) and Joy (Jessica Stroup)) are all complex and interesting, especially Ward, and yet go completely brain dead when the obvious is smacking them right in the face.
I understand that casting a non-martial artist in the role of Marvel’s living weapon was a gamble but the fight choreography involving Danny Rand (Finn Jones) is genuinely terrible up until episode 10 or 11 and could the actor have spent a little bit of time working out? The fact that the arms of a 25-year-old who has spent 15 years learning to fight every day has the muscle tone of a six-year-old kid stretches that suspension of disbelief even beyond the Brigadoon device of K’un-Lun.
There are similar nit picks that can be made for almost any Superhero tale. They are a hybrid of science fiction and fantasy. Sticking strictly to the Netflix series, I can list a host of irritations and plot holes and character flaws with Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage as well.
The problems with the Iron Fist series, however, has fuckall to do with the charge of cultural misappropriation. Netflix could’ve cast the most Asian cat alive in the role and it still would suffer from the indelible flaw that is its main character. The color of his skin (while accurate to the original comic) and his heritage doesn’t change who Danny Rand is. The fact is (and as the series starts to come to its conclusion, it is explicitly stated) Danny Rand is a terrible Iron Fist.  Not because he's white (the character was always about an outsider co-opting the legendary power), not because he's a rich kid, not because he's a bit of an arrogance twat.
Iron Fist is reasonably entertaining except for one fact: Danny Rand is the most Millennial superhero character so far.
Follow me on this. I used to hate the productions of The House Theatre. I mean hate. Then, one day, I was invited to their production of The Sparrow and I realized it was my expectations of the experience tainting things. I reframed the expectation that I was going to see adult theatre and decided to pretend I was watching a show geared toward eighth graders. Smart, Harry Potter reading eighth graders but 13-year-old kids nonetheless.
It worked. I instantly realized that The House was merely using the conventions of musical theater (the highly presentational acting style, the pauses for musical bumps, the physicality bordering on choreography) without the singing. While I still found serious flaws in the show’s writing, I did find that I had less hate for it, and that counted for something.
Reframing Danny Rand was simple. He’s 25-years-old. That's all you need to realize to understand this particular version of the character.
His only life experience is limited to training to fight monk-students and being beaten. His only emotional training has been to try to ignore how awful it was to watch his parents die in a plane crash by learning how to fight. He exhibits all of the traits associated with the stereotype of the Millennial.
He battles the dragon to become the Iron Fist not out of a sense of duty but because he thinks it will make him feel better about his life. When he gets that responsibility, he leaves because he’s bored and thinks that there is something else out there that will fulfill his sense of entitled destiny. He trains for 15 years to control his emotions but, in spite of the near constant intoning of wise Zen-like quotes and affirmations, almost all of his decisions are made due to his inability to detach from his Big Feels. He is so in control of his emotions, Claire has to calm him down, like, eight times during 13 episodes.
Understanding the arrogance and numbskull decision making, the constant flip-flopping in logic and approach, the “I have a hammer so everything is a nail” mantra, are all just due to the fact that Danny is just a fucking kid changes my expectation of him. While it doesn’t make him any less annoying, it does make the series and his story arc more palatable.
Ultimately, in preparation for The Defenders, I’m satisfied if not annoyed as shit with Danny Rand and his Iron Fist. Satisfied in the (perhaps) weakest link in the chain of events leading up to more of the Netflix/Marvel series (including the upcoming Punisher and hopefully Colleen Wing and Misty Knight in a Daughters of the Dragon spin off.) Annoyed that the character, like so many 25-year-olds, needs some seasoning and life experience before he is even remotely interesting.
*** PS: A quick thought to the writers of The Flash on CW. Is it possible that "Someone Keeps a Secret From the Team" could be retired as a plot? Otherwise, these kids just look stupid all the fucking time.

WELCOME TO THE MCU BINGO
This event is for the MCU, which means that any canon character within the Marvel Cinematic Universe and connected tv/netflix properties (Agents of SHIELD, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Punisher, The Defenders).
