i've got something to confess: i really haven't been that active within the stray kids and stay fandom within the last few months. for someone who has been with stray kids since their debut, and would jump in front of a bus for these 8 boys, i haven't really shown that over the past 6 months or so.
from about september-december i could feel myself pulling away from stray kids, for multiple reasons. the absolute insane hate bangchan was getting was one reason. absolutely nothing against him, i love him to pieces, but the abusive messages constantly for months and months against him were a lot. it truly is really different here on tumblr, but on twitter it's a battlfield. everyday there is clearing of searches and people angry and upset over the hatred, and seemingly even more people laughing at people getting mad over the hatred. there was an awful lot of 'it's just a joke, don't be sensitive' tweets going around, all while people were telling bangchan, even on his livestreams, to k*ll himself. it's definitely calmed down within the last few months (though the best leader contest currently going on hasn't helped anything), but the hate is still very present, in a way i've really only seen against a few other current idols.
the other reason i distanced(?) myself from skz and stays the last few months is because of the obvious elephant in the room: woojin. woojin leaving was devastating, maybe even more so because the clues sorta line up if you look at the last few months before the announcement in october. after all, he's always been the quiet/distant member, but the last few months you could blink and miss his face in the skz players and other content. he wasn't as present in songs, despite being the oldest and main vocal.
and then he left, with seemingly no warning. skz was left scrambling to remake their album that was set to release in only a month and stays were left winded, confused as to why exactly it was happening. was he kicked out? did he leave on his own accord? jype says he did, but then why would he not leave sooner, giving them more time to properly finish their album without him, or at least leave after levanter promotions? and then chan dropped the bombshell a couple months later, after woojin had signed to a new company, the thing that everyone still talks about. according to chan, woojin should have 'thought of the people around him'. chan used the words 'selfish' and 'betrayal', and seemed genuinely hurt in the vlive, even as he was careful to not say anything too direct and damning. and with that ~2 minute long video, stays were thrown into a dramatic divide. do they side with chan, abandon woojin and assume the worst? do they side with woojin, get angry at chan that he might be using his platform to get stays to side with him?
personally, i side with chan. i trust him the most, as i always have, and i trust that he didn't mean anything malicious with his actions. he's always been incredibly open with stays, and that's exactly what he was showing in that video- his raw emotions, so that stays could understand how he's felt the last few months. i don't hate woojin, and i will support his solo career, whatever that may be, but i also don't consider him part of stray kids anymore. i believe that commenting '9 or none' on everything skz does will only do more harm than good in the long run.
basically this is a long winded way of me explaining why i have been absent from skz and other stays for almost half a year now. yes, i still watched all their content during that time. yes i still supported them, as i do now. but the hate, drama, and emotions of and targeted at the fandom was a lot for me to deal with actively, so i just sort of pushed it aside until now. sorry for that, and i wish to be more active again in the future. after all, stray kids 2020 world domination.

You guys I am so serious right now. Especially to my white followers. DO THIS. TODAY. Imagine if someone you knew was shot at least 8 times in their own home while sleeping because police “went to the wrong address” for a drug bust. THE OFFICERS WHO MURDERED HER ARE STILL WALKING FREE. THEY ARE STILL EMPLOYED AS LOUISVILLE COPS. Please take just a BIT of time out of your day to do this. I am begging you.

This white woman’s shocking account of police brutality reveals the importance of the #BlackLivesMatter movement
Molly Suzanna shared a story on Facebook that she had never told before: when she was 19, she ran a red light while crying, then was pulled over and forcefully removed and beaten by a police officer. She explains in the letter that she believes her situation would have been even worse had she been black — and she ends the letter with an important call to action.

it's officially pride month, so let me recommend some of my absolute favorite lgbtqia+ movies for y'all in case you want to do a marathon. 🏳️‍🌈
1) imagine me and you (2005) - wlw movie about falling in love at first sight. rachel and luce lock eyes at the alter and instantly fall in love, the only catch is that it's not their wedding they're at. my absolute favorite romance movie. plays on the whole 'soulmate' trope. very sweet, only a bit of angst. happy ending. poc characters are almost non-existant tho.
2) love, simon (2018) - mlm movie about two boys falling in love online, the only catch is that they're anonymous. very funny and sweet, a bit of angst and blackmailing which might be stressful to watch. (the friends are absolute trash to simon though, there i said it.) simon's mom is the mom you always wished you could have. happy ending. poc main characters and a jewish love interest!
3) moonlight (2016) - mlm movie about a gay man growing up in miami. very emotional and poetic, but there is homophobia and an abusive parent and drug use. happy ending. entire main cast is poc!
4) catfight (2016) - i almost don't know how to describe this film. it is told in three major parts- the first, second, and third fight. it does involve a lesbian main character, but her sexuality is not a main point of the film, her awfulness is. in fact, it is the main highlight of the movie- her awfulness, and the awfulness of everyone around her. it seems to have been created as a response to the political and social climate of 2016, and it shows. no real angst or homophobia is shown, but anger is very present. anger is the backbone of the movie. happy-ish ending. a poc main character. can be watched on netflix!
5) lez bomb (2018) - wlw movie about a girl bringing her girlfriend home for thanksgiving to come out to her parents. very cute and hallmark-y, but there is some angst involved. mild recreational drug use. happy ending. next to none poc characters.
6) la llamada (or 'holy camp!') (2017) - a spanish christian musical movie involving a girl who falls in love with a nun and a god who sings whitney houston. set in spain. very cute friendship between main characters. mild drug use shown and the d*ke slur is used once, but by the wlw character. happy ending. can be watched on netflix!
7) closet monster (2015) - a growing up story about a gay teen escaping his abusive family and town. very artistically shot and beautiful, but full of angst. homophobia is most of the movie, with the father being a main antagonist and a homophobic hate crime being mildly shown at the start of the movie. most likely not for the sensitive of heart. happy-ish ending. almost no poc characters at all.
8) a single man (2009) - a story about a grown gay man navigating through life after his partner's death. very poetic and emotional, full of angst. light homophobia involved. major character death involved. unhappy ending. almost no poc characters whatsoever.
9) d.e.b.s. (2004) - wlw movie about a spy and a supervillian falling in love. very cheesy and cute, almost no angst. happy ending. poc main characters!
10) anna and the apocalypse (2017) - a christmas zombie apocalypse horror movie musical with a lesbian main character. it's a doozy. made in australia and with one of the smallest budgets and box office returns you'll ever see, it's not exactly the most popular movie on this list, but it's definitely the most outrageous. catchy musical numbers and fun friendships, this movie will almost make you forget that you're watching the world collapse around these characters. no real homophobia or angst. happy-ish ending? almost no poc main characters.

if you know you’re going to be exposed to tear gas make sure to:
wear a scarf or bandana to cover your nose and mouth (assuming you don’t have access to a gas mask, dust mask or other kinds of filtered masks). cover up identifying marks like tattoos.
tie up your hair and cover it as best as you can (tear gas can and will get into your hair and become tricky to wash out, you risk repeated exposure if you touch your hair and then your face etc).
wear goggles (swimming goggles or ski goggles work pretty well, sunglasses are not as good but they are better than nothing).
COVER YOUR SKIN (tear gas irritates the fuck out of your skin so cover up as best as you can. wear gloves. especially in warmer months sweat or other kinds of moisture on open skin eyes and lungs will react to tear gas and it will burn).
carry cold water with you to wash your face upon exposure, make sure it’s sealed so it’s not contaminated. hot water will open your pores and likely exacerbate the situation, so try to only use cold water.
prepare a separate spray bottle and fill it with a mixture of baking soda and water, this will help neutralize some of the effects of the gas. 3 tsp to every 250 ml seems to be a good rule of thumb. you will spray this onto your face and skin as needed. edit: this mixture is similar to what we used while we were protesting, but i have read conflicting reports regarding its medical efficacy. there’s apparently a risk of scratching your corneas if the baking soda has not dissolved sufficiently. if in doubt just use loads of fresh cold water.
do not wear makeup, sunscreen, creams, or contact lenses.
upon exposure:
try not to panic. running blindly will overexert your lungs and make things worse, and might make you hyperventilate faster. you also risk creating chaos and running headfirst into something more dangerous. move quickly but safely to get away from the cloud. get to higher ground if you can. if you’re in a building that has been gassed, immediately exit the building.
if you do inhale it, DON’T PANIC. it feels horrible and kind of like you might die but for most people it’s not lethal. (if you have asthma or other respiratory conditions or you’re elderly it’s far more dangerous for you to be exposed. infants are at greater risk also.) don’t rub your eyes or your face. you might vomit. your eyes and nose will stream like crazy. cough and spit as much as you can to get rid of the mucus build up. you might feel dizzy and disoriented. you might feel blinded. that’s normal. use the spray bottle on your eyes and face as quickly as possible and escape the area. the immediate effects will likely wear off in an hour or two but you might feel the burning/irritation for a day or two afterwards.
take care of yourself first and help others after. remember that touching exposed individuals with bare hands will contaminate your skin also.
if a gas canister lands next to you DO NOT TOUCH IT UNLESS YOU’RE WEARING HEAVY DUTY GLOVES. you will get second degree burns. the traffic cone method that HK protesters have been using seems to be the safest option to neutralize the canisters, but unless you’re sufficiently prepared to do this your only priority should be to get away from them.
when you get home:
take off your shoes outside so you don’t track particles into your house. wear gloves while handling contaminated items.
take off all of your clothes. everything, down to your underclothes will likely be soaked in gas. if you’re able to, hang them outside to air them out on a balcony or in a yard for a few days.
wash your face with cold water as many times as you can. do not stand over a sink and do this; kneeling down and tilting your head back to pour water over your face and into the inner corners your eyes is more effective. flush your eyes out one by one, try not to cross-contaminate particles from one eye into the other.
wash your glasses and goggles with soap and water.
take a cold shower with soap. do not take a bath. you will probably have to take multiple showers until the burning on your face and skin subsides.
wash your contaminated clothes separately – you will have to put them through multiple wash cycles or failing that, discard them. wear gloves while doing this.
gas particles can stay active for 4-5 days so do not wear the same clothes if you are heading back out.
what to do if your home is exposed to tear gas.
