Hey if you’re schizophrenic/psychotic I just want you to know that you’re a wonderful person and that you deserve so much better than the demonization, marginalization and stigmatization you face in this society.

i love neuro-divergent Bucky Barnes <3
Been thinking about autistic Bucky and I have many thoughts/headcanons:
Special interests in science and fantasy/sci-fi books and media
Stims by: flipping vaguely knife-shaped objects, fiddling with and tracing metal plates on prosthetic, flexing prosthetic repeatedly to hear the gears move, dancing (though more so in the 30s/40s), fiddling with dog tags, alpine lying on his chest as a pressure stim
Steve being one of the very few people who doesn’t drain his social battery and them just being able to do things in the same room without the expectation of having to speak/make conversation
His facial expressions tend to come across flatter or more stoic than he actually feels
Has a hard time reaching out to people/ connecting with people (especially new people) and has a hard time knowing what to say so it takes him a little longer to say something than most
Would rather stand on the sidelines and observe, doesn’t like being the centre of attention or feeling crowded
Touch averse, only initiates touch with a very select few people (Steve) and tries to avoid touch from others
Found it much harder to mask during the war and especially after breaking through the brainwashing
Would go out dancing and such pre-war but would come home drained from sensory input and social interactions
Could spend ages staring at the sunrise/sunset, especially when he can watch the sunlight over water
Hyperfixates on reading to the point Steve has to remind him to eat sometimes because he’s so focused and drawn in by a book
Has periods of not speaking/ going mute after having a bunch of sensory input or if it’s a particularly bad day and he doesn’t have the energy for speaking (maybe he switches to sign language on those days?)
Likes the pressure/weight of wearing multiple layers of clothes
Likes routine (taking care of the goats, sticks to going to the same places)
Has a hard time judging how much eye contact to give people (very uncomfortable with making eye contact at all when he’s stressed)
Will sometimes just respond with sounds rather than words if he doesn’t have the energy to talk
I feel like I’m staring into a mirror—I love all of it. All of it. ALL OF IT. Anon, you are amazing.
Tapping my fingers on my keyboard excitedly as I re-read all of these to soak them in more. I wanna bathe in these headcanons. I wanna breathe them in. I wanna be wrapped in them like a blanket. I love the one with facial expression because that is so me. Sometimes im like.. you know what. Managing my face is too much work we’re going natural. (Natural is RBF).. and Bucky knowing ASL? Yes please. And responding with sounds over words is beautiful. I’m half concerned because you have basically described me.. also that eye contact is REALLLL. I imagine in his attempt to be NT and make eye contact he actually makes wayyy too much eye contact and people interpret it as intimidating/staring problem.
Fun additional idea: Bucky having SPD
Sensory-Seeking Headcanons
Pressure being the biggest sensory seeking tendency he has. He LOVES pressure. Not a trapping claustrophobic kind but the gentle even cold pressure. Laying on hardwood floors (beds are too soft/squishy), pressing or leaning against furniture/walls/doorframes. Crossing his arms over his chest to give himself pressure. Alpine laying on his back or chest or wherever, just a comforting weight. Pressing his hands down on countertops and leaning forward so he can soak up that delicious pressure.
Vibrations. He loves vibrations. He’ll put his hand on speakers to feel the waves. Plus he’s a science geek so he can geek out about sound waves AND enjoy the funky pressure of vibrations.
Sensory-Avoidant Headcanons
Noise is an obvious big one. Loud or sudden or high pitched and repetitive. Vacuums, clocks, appliances, etc. he hates them all. Music is good though. Because he can control the music. He can control the type, the volume, the song.. but other noises that are out of his control? Sometimes he gets so fed up with them he wants to punch the wall.
Warmth. He loves being bundled and snuggled but he doesn’t like being too hot or sweaty and sticky. Steve always wants to snuggle but bucky has to turn the fan on first or else he’ll kick him off the couch. Holding hands is good but if Steve’s hands are too sweaty or warm it’s a no, he can hold his left hand instead.
His right hand is very sensitive to everything. Bucky hates it when his hand is wet or too warm or if something with a Bad Texture(tm) touches it. The worst thing is anything being rubbed against his palm. Touches are fine, pressure is fine, but rubbing anything (typically soap/shampoo/cream) into his palm is bad.
Bonus unrelated idea.... bucky is a tip-toe autistic. He walks on his toes instead of normally. I have no idea why it just feels right. Sometimes he’ll be like 2 centimeters away from his heels touching the ground but he doesn’t actually lower them. Steve’s always impressed with his balance and muscles because that’s impressive.
(Note to everyone else.. please send more asks, I literally love these and this so much. Give me more. Your thoughts are beautiful)
