so you're telling me Yagi Toshinori, The True Hero, All Might, knew that OFA shortened the life span of the holder, and still gave it to a naive child ... :/
following the fact that he also gave this child a quirk that would instantly make him a target for literally the worst villain of all time, without telling him of course (all of this without the consent of his guardian of course)
especially since Izuku is such an overt fanatical hero-worshipper, like talk about a lack of informed consent ... this is your DadMight, what?
also shounen-logic aside, giving izuku an extremely destructive quirk on the day of the entrance exam (where he'll probably have to use it and has zero training in using it) full well knowing it can pulverise his entire body ... like, this is not it fam, this is not peak dad-material
also, was letting Izuku get accustomed to his new quirk before throwing him in the deep end, out of the question? like Izuku couldn't have showcased at the Sports Festival and moved to Heroics from General Studies? dats embarrazzing, aren't you embarrazzed

Just finished writing the plot points for a DabiHawks + DabiTwice story; and it'll probably kinda tragic because daydreaming about it made me cry...
I've never written a tragedy before, and I really don't know if to start another project right now. I'm coming off (I hope) a rather major depressive episode but the main theme of it will probably be healthy for me to lengthily articulate ..

The issue with HK's writing is the tonal shifts. We have characters that have been traumatized and it being framed as traumatic, with long lasting effects; or we have characters who are traumatized and it being framed as comic relief or 'not that bad'.
Like Shouto refusing to use his fire because it scared him / he didn't want to be like his Father (his abuser), and this hurting himself is standard for a victim of abuse to feel. He will do anything to distance himself from his abuser because we, as people, don't like to be hurt and distancing oneself is a common defense mechanism.
Then, in literally the same arc, Bakugo is chained and gagged on live television, and it's framed as comedic. How is physically restraining a minor at all comedic? This isn't to say you cannot have humor in your story if there are heavy subjects, it's simply that the narrative that frames 'abuse as bad' also frames 'abuse as comedic'.
How is the audience (of mostly impressionable minors) meant to see how extremely damaging End*vore's literal crimes of domestic violence, child abuse and child neglect are; when in the same brush traumatizing another child is just a 'funny gag'?
This can also be said about Izuku's 'anxiousness' often being played up as comedic relief, when it's actually a result of years of bullying and grounded in a very real fear that someone will hurt him for simply daring to exist.
How did Aizawa personally promise to protect the students of 1-A to each of their guardians after the USJ incident; but then allow unknowing minors to 'intern' at an active and literal warzone without their guardian's permission. (Though if those guardians had given permission, call CPS.)
I don’t know how anyone could think it’d be safe to allow children to be at the outskirts of an active warzone, and not realize how deeply traumatizing that will be.
Look, if none of the traumatic incidents had lasting consequences, then I wouldn't be up in arms about it and making this post. But we have multiple storylines which depict a traumatic event and do have conclusive effects on multiple characters emotions, motivations, and next actions. Incidents that have changed the lifestyle of multiple characters; such as after the USJ incident, Bakugo's kidnapping, and Eri's entire life.
If multiple incidents are depicted as traumatic and inconclusively bad; then the severity of those that aren't are immediately being downplayed. It's a conscious choice to have your villains suffer continuously with no relief or sympathy*; while heroes who are also literal criminals be the focus of sympathetic redemption arcs.
Like, you cannot continuously make light out of some severely traumatic events and then expect people to treat them all with the seriousness they deserve. HK and his editors make a conscious choice each issue about who they want to be viewed sympathetically, and which actions they wished to be swept beneath the mat.

Despite Dabi and Hawks having the messiest public breakup, chapter 290 also showed us a similarity between them.
We know that a defining feature of Hawks is his willingness to "sully his feathers" for his cause, aka "the greater good". And in 290 we found out Dabi is willing to do so as well.
Remember Dabi only started to kill people after Enji became the Number 1 Hero (in the same chapter, in fact); and, per his broadcasted confession, we know that Dabi wants the public to view all his murders as done by "Endeavour's flames". It's also shown, per the chapter with snatch, that Dabi is troubled over the deaths he's caused (can't find the metas i read abt this, link me if u do).
It means Dabi has taken actions he doesn't believe in, that go against his moral code for his cause, which is "the fall of Endeavour".
I just think finding a similarity in all this is neat.

I think the fact that endeavour "wasn't as bad" in the beginning is actually compelling but I know some people will use it to say "oh so it wasn't 20+ years of abuse and neglect only like 14+, that's fine😝", and I'm not looking forward to that.
But, besides that I think it shows a rarely seen view into abusive relationships: the layout of that abusive household before it becomes so "clearly" abusive.
I'm not going to delve into Enji's mental hoops on why he was so desperate to become the most powerful person in Japan, because 1) I frankly hate him and 2) it doesn't absolve his actions.
The household dynamic though was prime real estate for abuse and neglect. Let's not forget that Enji bought Rei to fulfill his aspiration of defeating All Might. I think Rei even supported it to an extent (not to victim blame!!) - that's just probably a reason she wanted more children, to support Touya in fulfilling Enji's aspiration.
From the start, Enji didn't want a family for "warm and fuzzy" reasons. His family was an extension of his lifetime aspiration. His children were vehicles to that aspiration, which meant that 1) he doesn't see his children as their own people, rather as extensions of himself; and 2) with a level of dehumanisation, because it's not a child it's a potential answer to his life's work.
To recap on the household front, the most powerful person in it views his wife, who he bought like an object, as a supporter/enabler to his dream; and his children as weaker extensions of himself who, if only they'd do as ordered, will fulfill his lifetime aspiration. And if they can't are inherent failures.
To put is simply Enji doesn't see his family as people (dehumanisation 101); so why should he treat them with basic human decency? Why should he be a parent to objects?
The idea that Enji "lost himself" when Shouto was born is frankly ridiculous. If anything he actualised himself: charging full-speed ahead is his most hero-worthy quality in his public image.
The extent of Enji's abuse and neglect didn't sprout fully-formed at Shouto's birth: this was always going to happen because Shouto's quirk is the entire reason Enji had a "family".
To note, Touya seems to look back at that time (before Enji self-actualised) fondly (c.291) but he is definitely an unreliable narrator (and a child at the time); and no matter how cute the pictures look that was always a bad household.
tl;dr ur a clown if u think Enji was ever a good parent and I won't be taking criticism

like, not to focus on the wrong thing here but Dabi is a lot...buffer then I thought he'd be. If you compare his first image in the manga with shirtless 290, you can tell he's not as thin or sickly-looking
That got me thinking about how the only person Dabi refers to with respect is Doctor Tsubasa (he actually used a respectable honorific for him, which he does with literally no one else)
So, did the Doctor buff up Dabi in a similar fashion to Tomura's "power-up"? If so Dabi must have planned this for a long time, and been willing to go under a crazy scientist's needle for it

hey, just had an idea, this issue ended with Shigaraki facing off against Aizawa - but Hori keeps bringing up Kurogiri/Shirakumo (both Shiga and Aizawa have done so), so what if it's bc Kurogiri/Shirakumo will get in between them?
What if Shiga and Aizawa are having a face off and Kurogiri/Shirakumo stops them from hurting each other? well, I just think that'd be neat ;-;

AFO MANIPULATED TENKO INTO BECOMING THE BROTHER HE NEVER HAD
or why AFO really took Tenko in.
so I saw this post by @jae-the-hyung and, well, I started to think:
The first OFA holder looks a lot like Tenko; there is the mole (which Nana shares), and his hair looks a lot like Tenko's. To me, the most telling is OFA's pose. It's a very…Tenko gesture, the half-grab hand-reach. So, hear me out while I expand on this; and what this could potentially mean for the ending of AFO and Tenko's redemption:
Tumblr media
I've also thought AFO's hatred for Nana Shimura is a lot harsher than his hatred for other OFA holders (and I'll get to Toshinori in a moment). I mean why did he literally villainize her last descendent? I'm supposed to believe that he made Tenko into Tomura so it'd be ironic punishment against Toshinori, that he did it only to hurt Toshinori. He took in a thoroughly traumatized 5-year-old, continued to abusively manipulate him for about 15 years because…it would really hurt an already guilty prone All Might…?
The claim he chose Tenko as a successor is also moot because he took Tenko before All Might crippled him, and AFO is effectively immortal. He didn't (and I doubt he even now does) need a successor. So, all in all, it sounds like a lot of work for not a lot back, unless –
AFO got something else out of it.
I think my theory makes more sense if we bring in this theory (I can't find the post so link me if u know it), where AFO believes he killed Nana Shimura before she managed to pass on OFA; and, as such, AFO didn't know about All Might before he debuted. His brother's quirk, OFA, was back in the family line; and Nana Shimura hadn't the time to pass on OFA yet. So, AFO had finally liberated himself and won the battle of OFA and AFO.
I think AFO found the rest of the Shimura family (curiosity or maybe he had plans) but he saw an opportunity in Tenko. If Tenko Shimura is a direct descendant of OFA, and AFO believed he'd killed the last of OFA's power lineage; then AFO is without a remnant of his brother for the first time.
If AFO wants a sick attempt at closure, then Tenko is the perfect host for it. Tenko is delicate-hearted (is my fav term to use for him), he dreamed about being a hero and was abused for it, and is already prone to self-harm (scratching). He is a little brother, and Tenko is still very young and, I personally headcanon, quirkless.
Even if you don't believe AFO gave Tenko his quirk in full knowledge that it'd awaken destructively; it still resulted in the death of the rest of the Shimura family. AFO took Tenko's memories, but left the crippling emotions, so Tenko had no way to heal from the trauma. He kept Tenko isolated and retraumatized him by having him kill people who attacked him, and he praised him and gave him gifts (look at the number of belongings in his room over time) whenever Tenko acted like AFO wanted him to act.
sidenote: from the start AFO cast himself as Tenko's Sensei, claimed Tenko would be his successor; except Tenko doesn't even know how to take care of himself, let alone an empire. And evidence that AFO is aware of this? He appointed Kurogiri as Tenko's babysitter. (@thyandrawrites has more meta on this).
The entire relationship AFO built between himself and Tenko was how AFO determined OFA should have acted. His brother should've been wholly dependent on AFO, he should've realized AFO was their savior, should've begged to help AFO do his work, should have clung to his every word! I would not be surprised if the first OFA holder's name was revealed to be Tomura.
AFO manipulated Tenko into becoming Tomura Shigaraki. Not just to hurt All Might, but because it was cathartic for him. He derived a sick pleasure at having 'his brother' finally follow his beck and call, after decades of his 'rebellion' ruining his plans for the world. I'm not surprised he talks to Tenko 'affectionately' (condescendingly) he has masterfully manipulated himself as the center of Tomura's world, (exactly as it should have been).
Tumblr media
So, what does this mean for Tenko's redemption? In the panel below, he tells his family "Don't reject who I am":
Tumblr media
Tenko thinks being a villain, a being of pure destruction, is who he truly is; and his family, in their attempt to save/stop him are denying him that. If my theory holds true, then Tenko was not destined to be a villain. The destruction inherent in 'Tomura Shigaraki' is not his true self. Tomura Shigaraki is actually AFO's wish of another person entirely!
Once Tenko finds out that AFO's brother was called Tomura, or that AFO molded Tenko into his ideal for Tomura, or that he is a direct descendent of OFA – then the inherent belief that Tenko was destined for destruction has shattered. AFO put himself in the role of mentor and a benevolent savior but when Tenko finds out the truth, AFO would've betrayed one of the few things Tenko believed in.
I might be gaming but I know I'm not the only one who hopes that Tenko (and the LoV) will end up killing AFO, and maybe this is the catalyst.
tl:dr Tenko is a direct descendent of OFA. AFO raised Tenko to become his idealized version of his brother OFA. Tenko will find out that AFO does not see him as his own person. Tenko (and the LoV) will finally rebel against AFO.
