Meet the Parents: part 6 of 6

Ishida’s Adoptive Parents: Elowen Sotou + Hirohiko Tetsui

Their story: Elowen and Hirohiko were childhood sweethearts who grew up in a small Null village on the outskirts of Rah. For several years they had been longing for a child, but were unable to conceive. Then one day, while tending to the garden, Elowen hears a baby crying, and finds a small infant at the base of a tree. When Hirohiko returns home, Elowen brings the child to him and they decide that with the babies rare golden eyes and white hair, he must be a gift from the Ancients. The baby they had prayed so long for. They name the child Ishida and decide to raise him.

Their time with Ishida: Ishida displays his first sign of powers as a toddler. The calm blue and gold of his magic convince Elowen & Hirohiko that he must be a Child of the Light. They are overjoyed. Elowen spends time singing to Ishida and feeding his curious behavior by having him help her around the house, cooking, and gardening. Hirohiko often takes Ishida into the town to the market and to the ports to fish. They encourage their son to practice his power and are constantly amazed by his capabilities. Hirohiko often tells his son of the Arrids, and how he will be a great warrior someday and use his powers to protect the people from Nubik. Soon after Ishida's 6th birthday, Elowen learns that she is pregnant. The couple are ecstatic! As is young Ishida. They name their daughter Sora. Ishida and Sora are instantly connected and Elowen often watches fondly as Ishida uses his magic to calm Sora when she awakes crying at night. However, their happiness does not last. A mark begins to appear on Ishida's arm and the couple become devastated when they realize it is the mark of the damned. Confused and hurt to learn that their blessing is actually a Child of the Damned, they begin to discourage Ishida from using his powers. Especially, around Sora. Despite their best efforts at keeping the mark hidden, a villager sees it and alerts the village leaders. Elowen & Hirohiko express the innocence of their son and how they have already discouraged him from using his powers and that he is no threat. But when demons attack the village, the leaders are convinced that Ishida is the cause. And if Ishida is a Child of the Damned then that must mean that Elowen is really a demon in disguise. Hirohiko pleads with the town, expressing that Elowen had found the child under a tree and they had no idea what he was. Undeterred from their fear, Elowen is publicly executed. Hirohiko, wrecked with grief, becomes enraged. He attempts to kill Ishida, which causes an eruption of Ishida's power. During the eruption, Ishida kills Hirohiko and sets fire to his home and most of the village. Confused and scared, Ishida takes his infant sister and flees the village. He is just 8 years old. Present Day: Ishida holds no ill will towards his adoptive parents and often has nightmares about what happened. He wonders if Elowen and Hirohiko regretted taking him in, if they hated him in the end, and if he should have let Hirohiko kill him.

Ishida does not learn until he is much older, his true parentage and why he has such unique powers.

Shared Physical Features: Ishida looks nothing like his adoptive parents. But his sister Sora had Elowen’s blue eyes, and Hirohiko’s red- brown hair.

Shared Personality Traits: Ishida has Elowen’s gentle, nurturing nature. And like Hirohiko, Ishida is hard-working and has a snarky,teasing nature.
