Thursday Thoughts: Levels of Media Representation
I saw Disney’s Strange World. I really liked Disney’s Strange World. One of the things I really liked about Strange World was how Ethan, the main teenage character, was gay.
Not that he was gay – how he was gay.
There’s more than one way to represent a minority identity in a movie. Each method of portraying this character and their identity has a different effect on the audience. When discussing media representation, it’s not enough to simply ask if there’s a queer character in this movie, or a Jewish character, or a disabled character, or a Black character. We also need to consider how the identity is represented, and exactly how much good – or harm – that kind of representation causes.
These different kinds of minority identity can be viewed as levels on a scale – from least explicit representation to most impactful representation.
An important disclaimer: I am a queer Jewish woman. I am also white and cisgender. In this blog post, I discuss representations of minority identities to which I do not belong, and so I have to assume that at some point I make a bad call about what is or isn’t “good representation” for those identities. It is vital to listen to oppressed people when they say that something is harmful. It is equally vital to listen when they say that something is empowering. I can explore this topic through the lens of the minority identities I have as well as my experience as a writer, media analyzer, and social justice warrior. I cannot call myself an expert on experiences I do not have.
But this idea has been bouncing around my head since I saw Strange World, and so now, I give it voice.
Let’s take a look at the levels of media representation.
[Here there be spoilers – for Disney’s Zootopia and Strange World, and also James Cameron’s Avatar. Other movies and series are mentioned in non-spoiler-y ways]
1. The Allegory
Many movies, especially children’s animated movies, present an allegory for minorities and the struggles they face. A recent example is Disney’s Zootopia, in which different animal species and species groups metaphorically represent real-world human groups. Judy’s struggle to be accepted and respected as the first rabbit police officer directly parallels women’s struggle to break into male-dominated careers.
At the same time, in Zootopia, predators are across the board viewed as potentially dangerous and untrustworthy, mirroring many stereotypes about and bigotry perpetrated against BIPOC humans. At one point, a pig shouts at a cheetah, “Go back to the forest!” It’s as blatant as can be. But an allegory for people of color is not the same thing as telling a story that includes people of color, even if some of the movie’s side characters are voiced by Black and Latinx actors.
There’s also a big problem with an allegory like the one presented in Zootopia – there’s a “reason” for the bigotry. The prey animals have a legitimate, historical reason to fear and hate predators. In the real world, there is no legitimate, historical reason for white people to fear and hate people of color. While allegories can be useful conversation starters or early lessons about prejudice, they often teach, however accidentally, that bigotry is rational.
2. Coding
Sometimes, a movie will include a character who seems queer because of their appearance, their speech, or their body language, but nothing actually happens in the story that confirms it. Or, sometimes a character seems Black, but their skin is actually grey or purple because they’re an alien. These are examples of minority coding.
Coding is important to understand as a part of film history. For a long time, the only way queer creatives could get away with portraying a character who was in any way like themselves was to create a queer-coded character – like Ursula from The Little Mermaid, created in part by Howard Ashman and modeled after the drag queen Divine. Besides the creative outlet, the value of a minority-coded character is that it allowed minority viewers to identify with a character for what was often the first time ever.
The unfortunate side of minority-coding is that coding often involves falling back on harmful stereotypes, especially when the character is created by someone who doesn’t share the identity. Think about Watto from the Star Wars prequel movies, with his big nose, his little round black hat, his nebulously-Eastern-European accent, and his obsession with money. He’s Jew-coded, though I really wish I could disown him.
Even when a coded character is created with love and good intentions, the fact that the character’s identity is never explicitly confirmed in the movie gives bigoted viewers an easy out or an excuse to cause harm. It’s truly awful when a minority viewer who identifies with a fictional character gets dogpiled on social media by white supremacists who are furious that she dared to claim their favorite alien character was Black.
3. The Easy Cut
Near the end of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, two minor characters, both women, run up to each other and kiss. This is an example of the easy cut level of media representation. If you were to cut about five seconds of footage out of this movie, you would cut out the entirety of its queer representation. I won’t beat a dead horse here, but this kind of representation, though explicit, is insufficient.
I also include in this category those TV characters who are revealed to be Jewish during the show’s Christmas episode, but their Judaism is never brought up in any other context. If you skipped that one episode, you would never know they were Jewish, so does it really matter?
4. Ignorable
Sometimes a character has dark skin, but their race doesn’t have any impact on their story or how they move through the world. Sometimes a character has an accent that implies that they’re from a certain part of the world, but we never actually learn anything about their culture. Sometimes a character has a mezuzah on their doorpost, but they don’t ever mention the fact that they’re Jewish even though their story is about literally wrestling with Egyptian gods. (Yeah, I’m still salty about Moon Knight.)
These are examples of ignorable representation. The visible or audible aspects of this character’s minority identity are present for more than five seconds, so you couldn’t so easily cut it out of the show. However, the character interacts with the world in the exact same way that the “default” straight white man would. The media ignores how different identities create unique perspectives and experiences. As a result, this character’s minority identity hardly matters at all.
5. The Token Minority
The Black best friend. The sassy gay friend. The one elderly Asian man who owns the restaurant. The only female Smurf. These are some examples of the token minority. They’re not the main character of the story, and so they’re often one-dimensional, lacking a driving plotline of their own. Their only purpose in-universe is to support the straight/white/male/all of the above protagonist.
This is because their only purpose out-of-universe is to draw in a wider audience because the show has a character who is not straight/white/male/all of the above. As a result, this character lacks the complexity to be a true representation of a person and their experiences, which has the harmful effect of implying that real-world people with minority identities are not as complex, interesting, or worthy of focus as real-world people with majority identities. If every time you see yourself in a story, you are the side character in someone else’s life, what does that teach you about how you fit into the world? The token minority exists, and their identity cannot be ignored or denied, but they still don’t seem to matter.
6. Suffering
Finally, a category where the minority character’s identity cannot be ignored, and they are also the main character! However, the reason that their identity cannot be ignored is that their identity is the cause of the story’s conflict. Their identity is a big, terrible deal – a source of obstacles or of outright suffering for the character.
Think about Black people in movies about slavery, Jewish people in movies about the Holocaust, or queer people in movies about homophobia. Their identity matters to the story, yes, but in a profoundly negative way. The character’s minority identity might even be presented as something to escape or overcome, instead of as an important part of who they are. In James Cameron’s Avatar, Jake Sully begins the movie as a paraplegic, and his happy ending involves receiving a new body that is not disabled.
It is important for us to see and learn stories about different people’s struggles. We cannot afford to allow the world to forget about the ways that bigotry has led to suffering, because when we remember, we can learn from history and – G-d willing – put an end to bigotry, or at least more effectively fight it.
The problem is when these stories dominate the media. If we only hear about Jewish suffering, and never about Jewish joy, that sends a message to the world that Judaism is a terrible thing. Minorities’ suffering is one kind of representation, but it cannot be a complete picture.
7. Not A Big Deal, Yet Impossible To Ignore
But what if a movie included, as a main or major character, someone whose minority identity is not a big, bad deal, but also something that has a real impact on the way this character interacts with the world around them, to the point where their identity cannot be cut, ignored, or denied?
This brings me to Ethan from Strange World. While watching this movie, I felt I was truly seeing a person. Not an allegory, an implication, a stereotype, a token, or someone who only existed to suffer.
Ethan is a gay person. He’s a teenager with a crush on a boy named Diazo. He flirts with Diazo. His friends make fun of him and Diazo for flirting with each other. Ethan’s dad, Searcher, wants to meet and get to know Diazo, and Ethan is completely embarrassed about this. In the middle of a dangerous adventure, Ethan gleefully imagines how impressed Diazo will be when he hears about it. Ethan’s grandfather, Jaeger, is excited to hear Ethan talk about how Diazo makes him feel. Also, Ethan’s relationship with Diazo, and the way Diazo encourages Ethan to be himself and be an explorer, is an integral part of Ethan’s journey and character growth through the movie.
It is impossible to ignore that Ethan is gay. But it’s also not a big deal. It’s an integral part of who Ethan is. It informs his behavior just as much as being straight or aro-ace would inform his behavior. But it’s not an obstacle, nor a source of suffering, nor the only reason that Ethan exists in the story.
We need more of this kind of representation. I cannot exaggerate how much of a positive impact that characters like Ethan stand to create. People of all identities deserve to see themselves in movies, series, and all kinds of media as complete human beings who matter and whose identity matters as an integral part of their lives. Ethan is not the first example, and not even the first example that Disney has created (Mirabel from Encanto comes to mind – she and her family are undeniably, integrally Colombian). But he is an example that all creatives should learn from.

Which Disney Prince would rather have as your Prince?
A) Prince Naveen (Princess and the Frog)
B) Flynn Ryder (Tangled)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Would they be loving or dominant?
01 / 03 / 2023
🇬🇧🇺🇸 ENGLISH / ANGLAIS 🇺🇸🇬🇧
ASK ANSWERED
Hey thanks for your question about Disney 😊
Even though I have written a story where Prince Naveen of Maldonia humiliates his servant Lawrence, what I thought erotic about him was to portray him as an arrogant Prince who was used to have all he wants.
If I wanted to be dominanted by Naveen, I would have liked to live what happened in my story, to be humiliated by this superior man, and to be like Lawrence, a weak white male forced to obey a handsome black future King
Now at the end of THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG (2009), Naveen became someone kinder who appreciate what really matters.
Now my answer is to be loved by Naveen. He doesn't like to work first, but then he learns that the things that means something deserves that you fight to keep them. He seems to have more personality than Flynn.
Flynn Ryder from TANGLED (2010) - but I prefer his real name Eugene Fitzherbert - is as handsome and kind as Prince Naveen, but I have the impression that he is too common. If the characters designers had kept him as how he was supposed to look at first, I would have chosen him.
Your question allows me to say something about Eugene / Flynn. He is sublime. But that is precisely the problem. Most people who love her love her for her beauty. He's tall and muscular, the first Disney animated male hero to wear a goatee since Phoebus in THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE-DAME. The problem is that Flynn knows he's handsome: he worries about the drawing of his nose on posters to find him, thinks he can soften Rapunzel by giving her a charming smile...
Of course I found Flynn handsome, and he is. But there is nothing that differentiates him from previous princes. He is a thief (and Aladdin was): certainly Flynn is a bandit, but even when we learn that he has a painful past it does not have enough consequences.
Going back to his physique, the fact that this man is the first one Rapunzel sees gives the impression that he is the ideal male (large (white) muscular male).
So let me tell you about the physique he could have had in the film.
He was first thought to be a fat man of average height (since he would have been the same as Rapunzel). A somewhat exuberant and funny prince.
Tumblr media
Nowadays we talk about the fact that Disney puts on minorities, but honestly we don't care if there is a gay or fat secondary character when the main characters are still big muscular dudes! Why didn't you show a pretty young girl wanting and falling in love with a fat, not very tall man? There were already Disney couple with non-fat women with tall muscular white males. In short, the creators were not brave enough to sexualize fat men and show that they can be hot too.
Tumblr media
Then Flynn could have been a somewhat bohemian man, with harem pants, long hair styled a bit like a pirate. It could have shown that despite the feminine side of his look (long hair, flowing pants, colorful and floral-patterned outfits, flashy jewelry), he can still be masculine and strong.
Tumblr media
For me this look is the best because it has enough originality to stand out from the other Disney heroes, and it was with a sufficiently similar physique not to be too different from them.
Tumblr media
Finally, Flynn was almost a very tall guy, a bit silly and paunchy, but nevertheless muscular and protective. This physique was more or less retained for Kristoff in FROZEN.
Tumblr media
A rather fat man, a little feminine or too tall: that's what could have made Flynn less ordinary. So my return question would be: what is your favorite version of Flynn Ryder?

Ta question me permet de dire quelque chose à propos d'Eugène / Flynn.
Tumblr media Tumblr media

The worst part about Lily's ''reviews'' is how bare-bone they are.
Most of her MLP and Disney reviews are less than 10 minutes long.
Quite a big part of them is just Lily letting the movie play. When she does speak it's usually:
Some random tidbit about her life that gives you a huge whiplash. One moment you're watching ponies or a Disney's classic and in the next, she just drops onto you how she was abused by her ex, family drama, etc. She edits her videos, if not, she should still be aware of what she is uploading. And then she has the audacity to get angry at her viewers when they get concerned, ask her questions, dig deeper and find that she's full of shit. If you don't want people to peer into your privet life, keep it private! Most people just want to watch a video and move on, if she hasn't mentioned those events they wouldn't even know about any of those dramas in the first place.
This is kinda similar. Instead of just a throwaway line, Lily goes for minutes at a time about some political or social issue that has nothing to do with the movie or the episode she's ''reviewing''. You may think it's not a big deal but when the video is only 10 minutes long and 2 of those minutes are spent on stuff like this, that's 20% of the content wasted. If you want to make a political channel and use cartoons as an example then do it right. Like her ''Glass of Water''. Also, those ''takes'' aren't any good. They like overused memes at this point. All Trump-supporters, conservatives, and religious people are evil racist Nazis.
I like this person, they're ''valid''. I don't like this person, they're just like my ex/Josh/a Nazi. At this point being called a Nazi holds as much weight as being called a jerk.
Shipping, ''those two are totally gay for each other'', ''gay princesses'', etc. Maybe it's because I know more about her controversial stuff but it feels almost like a fetish.
Sweet baby, aww, pointing out something is cute.
The good parts and jokes are mostly stolen.
Also, because of her tone, I never know when she is joking or being serious.
Is there anything, in particular, you don't like about those ''reviews''?
to me they're just mostly boring and uninteresting. i always only watched her glass of water videos and skipped everything else, unless she happened to touch something i cared about. i think i said it before but her in a minute series is so dry and LO herself sounds bored while making it that it makes me bored of watching. she can make her voice expressive and have energy when she wants to, but not on those videos for whatever reason. she doesn't sound invested at all with what is happening in front of her. i'm someone who loves animation, character design and hear about the artistic process that went behind the creation of a work so the "reviews" of LO do nothing for me on that aspect. even if someone is not an expert about any of those topics, i love when a critic just start gushing all over a escene or a particular visual aspect of the show they loved enough to bring out because that shows to me the passion they have for the medium, that they thought about it and appreciated it, technical knowledge or not. i never got that from LO, no matter what she's talking about. if i'm not getting any new perspective on the visuals of this movie/show, her jokes are unoriginal or heard better before, her "hot takes" are delivered with the dry tone that with everything else and the only "new" thing she offers are her own creepy/unnecesary comments... what reason is there left for me to watch at all?

Do you think politics should be kept out of fictional stories, or just from satires like The Addams Family?
Before I get to The Addams Family mixing with politics or not, let me clarify one thing: there's a difference between an artist adding political commentary to their work, and a big corporation like Netflix doing things like adding random political slogans to a character's dialogue to sell their product as "woke."
To make my point clearer, let me compare two properties BY Netflix.
First we have the anime Cyberpunk Edgerunners. It is a dystopia in which the people in charge have so much power, they can get away with OPENLY treating human life as absolutely disposable in every way because all that matters is that they keep making money, and the characters are just trying to make a living, their own way, so the system won't crush them like bugs.
The politics is part of the world building, and it is presented through us as just another part of the narrative - the challenges the characters face, and the consequences of them getting their way, or failing miserably.
Meanwhile, there were the random “woke” moments in Wednesday. A guy saves her life in the first episode. This leads to her being rude to him and asking if he saved her because women are all fragile damsels in distress that need a man to help them.
Wednesday had no idea who this guy was. She had no reason to believe he was sexist. He did not condescend to her in any. All did was help her out, and then explain to her what happened when she woke up at the infirmary.
Now, about your actual question: politics are, unfortunatelly, a part of life, so naturally that is reflected in fiction, and to pretend that political messages haven’t been a part of a ton of great shows, movies, and books is not just silly, is downright stupid. However, like anything in the writting process, it has to be done right - and what is right for one story, is completely wrong for another.
This wasn’t a “strong female character telling the patriarchy to fuck off”, it was a character spewing out cheap “empowering” lines to make the internet call her a feminist icon - and thus keep their Netflix account, praise the show, and recommend it to others for having said “feminist icon.” It is the equivalent of writing a scene with Wednesday’s roomate telling her - or rather, the audience - that she loves Netflix because it has all the best shows and movies she could ever want to watch.
This is as "bold" as Disney announcing it's 50th first gay character, which will get three seconds of screentime. It's not the writers sending a message to the audience, it's fake activism in it's laziest form.
Avatar The Last Airbender and A Song Of Ice And Fire are both stories that have among their themes grief, trauma, and the horros of war. Both could have key characters meeting a duel, but only Avatar could get away with making said duel a parody of a wresteling match, including an obvious stand in for The Rock, because it was a kid’s how and comedy was a big part of it. Both could have characters getting hurt or even dying, but only ASOIAF could show/describe these scenes, because it is aimed at adults and has a much darker, and straight up brutal tone.
The Addams Family is satire. That genre is PERFECT for the best kind of political commentary: the kind that is made through witty and/or silly jokes.
However, for said jokes to feel natural in the story, they have to be true to the essence of the characters - and the Addams’s main trait is that they’re weird, sometimes scary people.
To give you an exemple, in the first movie, we have a scene of Morticia proudly telling her daughter’s teacher that one of their relatives danced naked in the town’s square, enslaved a minister, and was burned as a witch. Morticia then says that she told her daughter that she is not only allowed to do the same, but is actually encouraged to, but only after she goes to college to get a proper education. This shows the Addams have exactly zero problem with women that were demonized through history because they were sinful, lustful, evil witches, and all that great stuff.
However, the same movie also mentions how they did the Mamuska, a traditional dance of their family, in honor of Jack The Ripper - a serial killer who violently murdered sex-workers.
This could look like a contradiction, but it isn’t, because the Addams’s whole deal is celebrating EVERYTHING that regular people find creepy, distasteful, sinful, inappropriate, morbid, vile, scary, etc.
Another exemple would in the sequel, Addams Family Vallues, in which Gomez and Morticia are listing all the “baby names” they thought of before finding the correct one - and among the options were both Lucifer and Mao.
Now, obviously this is the writers pointing out that Mao, the dictator that ruled China with an iron fist for years, was such a horrible person, he could be compared to the actual devil. But it also means that the Addams are not only okay with the guy, they actually considered naming their son after him. The movie is bashing Mao, but Gomez and Morticia are praising him for his terrible actions as a dictator - while the fact that he was a communist dictator is irrelevant, because the Addams are not communists. The joke is political, the characters are not.
And the super racist thanksgiving play Wednesday ruins in that same movie? She only did that because she was forced to participate in it, and she was sick of their fake, imposed happiness, that went as far as pretending that a massacre was actually a friendly dinner between the “civilized” europens and the “savage” natives. The scene was political, but the character was just doing something she knew would horrify and anger her enemies.
Even in THE tamest version of the Addams Family, the TV series of the 60s that had to drop nearly all of the dark humor, that element wasn’t lost.
There is an episode in which Gomez is supporting a politician. When Morticia asks him why in the world would he vote for a guy who is promising to destroy all the swamps when the Addams all like swamps, Gomez says that this is exactly why he is voting for him: is a campain promise, and everyone knows those are exactly what the guy will NOT do if he is elected.
But Gomez is still super friendly to the guy (the Addams way, which creeps him out), and there is no tension about how the other candidates are horrible and thus this guy is the good one, or at least the lesser of the evils they get to chose from. It is not taken seriously AT ALL. It’s just another excuse to have the Addams freaking the normies out.
The show was also praised for being one of the few family series that had the parents being actually happy together and in love, and taking good care of their kids. This was 100% because of the satire element, showing that the people who didn’t conform to what the traditional american family should be like were one of the few american families that were actually happy - but the Addams never point that out to us. Because it isn’t an act of rebellion on their part, at least not intentionally, they’re just living their lives.
They are NOT like us, so our ideas of politics could NEVER apply to them, because they simply can’t relate to it. That doesn’t mean the writers can’t add political commentary to the story - it just means they have to actually be competent at ballancing “these are my beliefs” and “this is what feels natural for the characters to do”

Well for my religious upbringing, there's two sides. Mother, who wasn't even a twice a year Methodist and only took us when my sister was in her religious phase or when I explained St Francis of Assisi to her, and father who is the super Catholic side to the point that he is now a deacon in the Catholic church.
For me, the dinosaurs were something that happened before the book and were like God's trial run. Then he killed them with a meteor.
Next, birth control has been a good thing, unless it's the plan b pill which I was told by my father is actually abortion. I actually cried over that one. Abortion is a big no-no but I forget their stance on rape babies. I think it was give them up and hand them off. Though my father does after abortion counselling or something? Idk there's a magnet on the back of his car offering assistance.
Mother said gays are against the Bible. Father is anti gay. I told them off once and said I was bi. That was enough to make two people, one who doesn't want to speak to her and the other who would call him asswhipe like it was his name to my face, contact each other and then decide that since I hadn't slept with a girl, I wasn't actually bi.
Last I checked mother is still vehemently against and probably moreso since the US made marriage legal ON HER BIRTHDAY!!!
My father actually left a campground once because he suspected the owners to be lesbians. He now stands a little kinder towards them but will remark that they need to stop adding gay characters to Disney movies cause they're being forced on us now. Though they will say nothing to my face about my trans friend and when they asked me to make us family friendship bracelets, I had us all pick our colors and they were almost all the standard rainbow colors. So I ordered it from our ages and it pretty much came out to a rainbow. I've never seen them wear them. XD
I no longer speak to my mother but my father sees my tattoo, which is Fight's Not Over Yet with a semicolon and he says he can probably get it off with sandpaper because tattoos are against the religion. I like to point out that so are shrimp or clothes made of different fabrics. They ignore my retorts.
I plan to raise my children as Christians but not so hardcore. Take them to the same preschool I went to at my old Methodist church because the basic lessons they teach about Jesus and such are good life lessons and get them baptized but I'm not gonna shove it down their throats and I'm gonna teach them right and that Jesus hung out with a hooker and chased people out of a church with a whip.
WOW lol yeah I remember you telling me about that whole tattoo thing.
I was asking bc I really wanted to reinforce how fucking weird my childhood was, because it wasn't normal. My mom has since calmed down on the more insane things, and i wouldn't call her fundamentalist anymore, but she went through what I called her "little house on the prairie" phase when I was growing up. I wasn't allowed to wear pants, skirts had to cover my knees, i couldn't watch tv that she didn't expressly approve of (like for example, i wasn't allowed to watch Ben 10 at the age of 15), and used to randomly flip through books I checked out to make sure they were "appropriate” (and for context, she considered the hunger games inappropriate) I had a flip phone until I turned 18 in 2016 and bought my own second hand iphone. The computers all had software that recorded every other second of screen time and kept a log of everything i typed, including my usernames and passwords for every site i visited. And that's just the home stuff, that doesn't even begin to include going to church twice a week, being forced to be in youth groups, and participating in sunday school and religion conferences. girls at one point i had the youth catechism memorized, could recite the ten commandments exactly as they were listed, and even had a couple of psalms down too. I was SO pretentious about my love of classical music and i used to be able to clock the era of every piece i heard. I COULD READ AND TRANSLATE LATIN.
in the end, this all just made me one of the sneakiest natural liars. I would simply just read "inappropriate" books at the library. I bought a $20 portable dvd player and checked out box sets of tv shows that I would hide in my big school binders.
ya'll if 15 year old me saw 23 year old me, a tatted, blue-haired weed smoking feminist apostate who is openly bisexual with pronouns and a career ahead of me? no husband? no children? i'm like the final boss antagonist of every single christian movie.

Did you know that in spanish we have many expressions with milk? I don't think it's a thing in Colombia, maybe only here in Spain, but forgive me for taking the opportunity to do a silly comic.

Headcanon about Julieta: her magic is in the act of giving the food to someone
Following my last drawing, I want to talk a little about my headcanon. As I said, I don't think her healing magic *is* her cooking. Why would she spend her days in the town waiting for the people to come to her? She could, Idk, send any of the kids, or just set the table with the food and go on with her day.
We have the townspeople...

I don't know about you, but I fear the day that we have a canon sexuality for Bruno because whatever it is, some people will be angry.
I see a lot of people with OCs that are ladies, so I suspect that they want Bruno to like girls. Then you have people who watch him and read his story as the gay uncle whose name the family don't speak, so, achillean. And I think the option of aro and/or ace is popular too? And right now everyone is having a great time with their headcanons, everything is valid.
But Jared Bush doesn't want to answer anything about this topic. He is doing that with the things they want to explore in the future. And yeah, I can imagine the grandkids asking why he is single. They'll make a canon story about that. And some people will be disappointed or angry.
My worst fear? I'm ok with everything, but I guess I can't trust Disney (talking about the company, not the people actually making the movie and trying their best).
I would love Bruno being aro/ace. I crave asexual representation. The A spectrum is so big, they can try so many options (I usually think about him like an ace with a tentative interest in romance). But. Can I trust them to do a nice representation? And, can I trust the fandom who see him as alosexual to be ok with it? Because, I don't want to think bad, but I watched so many dramas in other fandoms... I'm not ready to read more shit about us. I can't do that anymore, I'm tired.
Bruno being gay? Amazing. I love the idea. Beloved character being achillean, nice. But we are talking about Disney. Every year we have a new "the first openly gay person in a disney movie!!!" and is always a background character saying one line or kissing their partner really fast, super easy to cut if they need it. I don't know about the situation in other countries, but here in Spain there is a group of people who are trying to boycott Lightyear because Oh No TwO wOmEn KiSsEd. Encanto is SUPER popular. Bruno is very popular. Some people will be so angry if he is gay. Would Disney risk their public opinion for this? Uuuh.
And if he is hetero or at least they show him having interest in women... It's ok! The movie is not about LGBTQ+ experiences, I don't expect Disney to try more representations after using the "latino representation card" (Too much for them, they'll cry). And we’ll have more opportunities with the rest of the family if we are lucky. But if they go with "he wanted but everyone was wary of him, so Bruno couldn't find a girl" ..... I'll die if the incel community find him relatable or something like that 💀 Or... Imagine if they use Bruno being neurodivergent as the excuse of why no woman wanted to marry him, because he is "strange". More 💀💀
So yeah, I don't know. I'm happy right now. Everyone is having fun. You can read/write about any option or ignore the topic completely. But some day...

System Picrews + Alter Information
Makowka Character Maker II
Tumblr media
[ID: A square picture of a picrew of Roman from the Blurred Collective. She is a white, feminine presenting person with freckles across her face and on her neck. She has long, wavy brown hair, that goes down to her shoulders, and then disappears behind her back. On top of her head are light brown lion ears. She has green feline eyes, and a pink face-paint heart under her left eye. She is smiling with her teeth showing, which are pointed into fangs. Roman is wearing a red shirt under a wine colored cape. She is also wearing red teardrop shaped earrings and a black fabric choker with a bow tied in the front. There is a flower crown with green leaves and red, yellow, and white flowers on top of her head. The background of the image is a picture of the transgender flag, which has five stripes in the order of blue, pink, white, and blue, going vertically from top to bottom. Behind Roman is an off-white circle spanning from the tip of her lion ears to her shoulders. It is mostly obscured by her hair. On her right shoulder is a semi-transparent watermark of black text with a white outline. It reads “Makowka Picrew”. End ID.]

I thought maybe having faces and maybe a little information about the names and people that pop up on this blog might be nice for everyone, so here’s mine! I’m Roman, I use she/her/her/hers/herself, he/him/his/his/himself, and mrrrp/mrrp/mrrrps/mrrrps/mrrrpself pronouns. I like disney movies and music, mogai coining, swords, cats, and big cats, among other things. I occasionally need tone tags, and will use tone tags if asked, but I often cannot tell my tone, or forget to use them. /genuine  I currently use the labels bigender, transfeminine, transgender, isogender, and a label I plan on coining and posting here soon, biroyalflux, which is a subset of bigender where both genders are royal in some way, and they fluctuate between each other in amounts. I am demi-biromantic asexual, cupiosexual, queer, gay (for me this means gay as in any attraction I experience is gay, not gay as in homoromantic/homosexual. Technically a version of mspec gay, but I prefer this label instead.), ambiamorous, and romance and sex ambivalent. I am an age regressor as well. My current partners consist of Virgil, Logan, Patton, and Janus, all in my system, and I am unsure on if I will have more or not. Other in-system relationships consist of friends with the Sanders Sides fictives, and a brotherly/sibling relationship with Remus, who is my twin. I am open to making out of system friends.   I am part lion, and am sourced from a Sanders Sides Alternate Universe where everyone has animal traits. This causes me to have lion ears, feline eyes, fangs, retractable claws, and a lion tail, as well as gives me the ability to purr and hiss like a cat would. It also causes me to enjoy things like catnaps, sun spots, and warm blankets. /positive
I may add more or change this a little later, but I wanna coin more things right now and this is getting kinda long, so I’ll end it here, bye!!   - Roman (she/he/mrrrp) ⚔

Time to meet your (soon to be) other half!
🌺HI! I'm Harry!🌺
I use he/him for binaries and prince/princes, 🌺/🌺s, and an infinite amount of plant-based neos! I do not mind if you prefer he/him usage! Yes, I am an alter from a larger system! (They wish to be discussed limitedly!) Our body’s 20, I’m 22! I do NOT age slide, aging only linearly! I'm a Harry Osborn fictive and I enjoy roleplaying as Harry! I am fine with mature themes, sfw or nsfw! And for that reason I ONLY roleplay with others over the age of 19/20, ending around 28! I am gay and prefer to write Harry as strictly gay. If you want to discuss anything you see as a limit, please, PLEASE just ask! I'm prettyyyyy easy going and like to know what other people don’t like! I am interested in any and ALL Harry plots! This includes, but is not limited to: Spider-Man 1-3 (movies), The Amazing Spider-Man 1 & 2, Spider-Man PS4, original Spider-Man comics (circa 1965), new Spider-Man runs (give me the name and I’ll read them!), Spectacular Spider-Man, and Marvel’s Spider-Man Animated Series! Plots and themes I’m okay with!: I enjoy AUs! Like Medieval/Royal/Fantasy, coffee/flower shop, ‘we have to date because _’ scenarios, alien races, Omegaverse!, college, mermaid, monster/monster hunter, etc! Things I include: I write Harry as a young adult who’s vegan, ginger (PS4 looks), enjoys helping others with his money, has a million plants, and loves Disney films. Harry’s mostly friendly and charming, backed by his father who is typically doing illegal experiments and constructing underground drugs. He cares about Harry to the media, but does not at home. Harry may be considered a B-list celebrity if you’d like drama with that!  Seeking Muses: EDDIE BROCK, Flash Thompson, Peter Parker, just about anyone! I’m totally willing to work in chemistry!!  Things up in the air: PLEASE be ready to set aside time for k!nk discussion! I am open to just about everything and willing to be flexible on my own! *Please refrain from calling things disgusting! I do have Harry wear skirts and dresses on occasion. If that bothers you, I can remove that aspect! I also often have Harry partake in some sort of drug, in the comics its LSD, however I’m likely change it to drinking and/or weed, it gives a little angst. Yet again, if that bothers you, or is a trigger, please just mention that! I’m cool with taking it it out! A few boundaries: 1. Gwen Stacy is not a love interest at all for Harry, they are like siblings to me. 2. If Peter if your preferred muse, I’d like them to meet at college like their original comics! 3. I am not big on writing ‘topping’ characters. I do not mind writing Harry being more in control on occasion and giving to the relationship, but it’s not my favorite for that to solely rely on him. Often over some time, I do like having him fully indulge his partner in just laying back, but it’s not something I like a huge chunk of the time. Please have this in mind! If writing 18+ content is important to you, please be okay with writing your character as the ‘top’ at least 65+% of the time. Otherwise it’s not fun for me. Please message me if you are interested!!!

About to watch S20E16 now.
Edit 1: OMG I forgot we saw bby!Nicky in adult Nicky’s dream. She’s adorable.
Edit 2: Lmaooo Zav just walking in. Legend. I miss him.
Edit 3: Nicky talking about how excited she is to be mentored by the “incredible Jac Naylor” :((
Edit 4: Serena reminding Zav his patients can in fact hear everything he says in front of them. Great, Serena, now when are you gonna learn that’s also true of Jason?
Edit 5: Roxanna wearing ANOTHER great top.
Edit 6: Not Meena basically flirting with Rox.
Edit 7: Patient who works in a fish and chip shop says he took the “Chippocratic Oath”. Sacha asks him how long he’s been planning that joke for. He says “since I stumbled into the building”. Iconic.
Edit 8: Haha. Roxanna, to Meena, on John: “Don’t worry. He’s very focused. He won’t even notice you’re not there.”
Edit 9: I miss comedy patient storylines. I miss patient storylines in general.
Edit 10: Nicky and Meena arguing about whether to get Gaskell for a neuro consult. Nicky makes a remark calling Gaskell “a flipping Disney princess”. John and Rox walk in at that exact moment. The comedy in this ep is absolutely 10/10.
Edit 11: Rox on John: “He can be very quick to criticise, but he can also be quick to praise.” Textbook BPD. Why did they give John all these BPD traits and then villainise him for them.
Also, it’s really nice to get to see John do actual competent doctor stuff and not just “look at me I’m crazy and evil” stuff.
Edit 12: I love Frieda.
Edit 13: Zav being homophobic. Yikes. Thank god he grew out of that nonsense.
Also, Lofty saying “I don’t feel the need to give myself any label”. CRINGE. Say what you like about Casualty’s LGBTQ+ rep (and there is a lot to say tbf) but at least Jez was allowed to call himself bi. Did Holby ever have a single character who identified themselves as bi? I can’t think of one. Not liking labels is valid but when you start using it as an excuse to avoid the word “bisexual” (whereas you have characters like Dom gleefully saying they’re gay every other episode - not a criticism of Dom, I loved that about him)... yikes.
Edit 14: Meena and Nicky still girlfriends.
Edit 15: Med student Nicky!! Precious.
Edit 16: Is the shirt Sacha’s wearing here the same one he wore in The Perfect Storm or am I imagining things? It’s a good shirt.
Edit 17: Speaking of BPD John... not him splitting on Nicky because of Meena making him think she abandoned the surgery she was meant to assist on with no explanation or reason. Ouch.
Edit 18: Zav was such an interesting character.
Edit 19: Frieda, my beloved.
Edit 20: Ahahahaha omg Zav getting Lofty’s gran bumped up the waiting list by sleeping with one of the staff from the HCOP unit. Amazing.
Edit 21: I want Holby to be replaced with a new Holbyverse show that’s just Frieda giving advice for an hour a week. I’d watch it.
Edit 22: Ooh. Did they ever explain WTF this was supposed to be about? Rox telling John she’s “just worried [he’s] getting tunnel vision, where [he] can’t see or hear anybody else’s concerns...” and John replying “I’m a changed man, Rox.”
Edit 23: Meena and Nicky were so gay.
Edit 24: Really weird actually, thinking about it, how Meena and Nicky’s friendship was such a big deal in that first year and then once Meena left I don’t think Nicky ever mentioned her again.
Edit 25: Nicky having dreams about her young self pretending to be a doctor again... now, pretending to tell friends of a patient about donating the patient’s organs. In hindsight of both Zav and Jac... OOF.

“Yo  a ti, Cas” Or how mexican dubbing gripped us tight and raised us from Despair.
Ok. So I promised a big meta about the dubbing thing and so while I don’t have all the answers YET, here’s a bit of perspective on the differences between Despair and The Truth.
First, a little background. I am a former professional dubbing translator. While I worked on anime series from Japanese to Spanish, rather than in live action ones from English to Spanish, the process is not that different. Also, I worked in Mexico, where Supernatural is dubbed, so that’s why I can make the assumptions I make. Finally, my specialization in college was translation from English to Spanish, so I guess I know what the hell I’m talking about.
So let’s start on HOW you translate something for a dub. Back in the day, you got a ton of VHS tapes with the episodes on them with time codes, and, if you were lucky, a shooting script. This is to say, it was not a transcript of the actual words said in the episode, but the script BEFORE the actors, directors, and everyone else had a hand on what was said and changed. And thus, anything adlibbed? Is not going to be in that script which, at least for the anime side of things? Was a nightmare as the script was usually “And here X actor can say whatever they want” and I had to go and listen to the scene ten thousand times. Now a days, you get either a video file or a streaming link, and sometimes, the shooting script. If you get a script, btw, you can also not get a script in the original language. I know that the person who had to translate Sprited Away to Spanish was working off a German script, not the Japanese one. So yeah, some things can be lost in translation there.
THEN you get to translate. BUT you can’t just translate word by word. You have to adapt it so that it will sound like something a person will say, and sometimes, literally is not the way to do it. And in particular, Mexican dubbing has a reputation to uphold as the “Neutral” dub that is send to most Spanish-speaking countries in Latin America, so we can’t use certain words (I don’t have the list at hand, but I remember that I couldn’t use “Llanta” for Tire, and so I had to use “Neumatico”. And no “sweaters” or “hotcakes” or stuff like that), AND we have to match the lips of the original video. Which is like, the worst nightmare ever because of what we call “labiales”, that is to say, the letters where lips close.
I can’t tell you how much we all loved when a character gave a long winded speech with their back to the camera due to those damned closed lip letters.
All this is to say that sometimes, the line could be “We are all in this together for good or bad”, and the translation become something more like “Estamos en esto, por las buenas o las malas” (We’re on this, the good way or the bad way) or “Estamos juntos en las buenas y en las malas” (We’re together in the good and the bad), depending on the translator, dub director, and voice actor.
Depending on the client, that is, the original owner of the series, sometimes they will review the translation once it’s all dubbed and edited. I know that in the Avengers movie, a Disney rep was present on the cabin and forbade any changes from the script, which resulted on a couple of awkward lines in the end result. I don’t know if that’s the case for Supernatural, but I honestly doubt it. Still, translators can’t make huge changes for the dialogue. One couldn’t just ADD a relationship that wasn’t there, no matter what.
(As an aside, due to the very conservative mindset of some tv stations, it’s more common that gay relationships become more ambiguous, by changing “I love you” to “Te quiero” which can be more of a filial love than a romantic one. And well, that one case in Sailor Moon where a gay character was changed into a woman because the dub director honestly thought the character was a woman. But that was in the nineties)
Now, let’s go to how Castiel’s speech was translated.
The original, according to Superwiki, went like this:
Castiel:  You're the most caring man on Earth. You are the most selfless, loving human being I will ever know. You know, ever since we met, ever since I pulled you out of Hell, knowing you has changed me. Because you cared, I cared. I cared about you. I cared about Sam. I cared about Jack. I cared about the whole world because of you. You changed me, Dean.
Dean: Why does this sound like a goodbye? Castiel: Because it is. I love you. Dean: Don't do this, Cas. Cas.
And the translation, as it was aired, went like this (And people, you have no idea the war flashbacks transcribing this gave me, so I hope you appreciate it):
Castiel: Eres el hombre mas amoroso sobre la Tierra. Un hombre sin egoismo; el hombre mas generoso que haya visto, y que jamas vere. Sabes que desde que nos conocimos y desde que te saque del infierno, el conocerte me ha cambiado. Porque a ti te importa. Y a mi me importa. Me importas tu. Y me importa Sam, me importa Jack, me importa todo el mundo. Y fue por ti. Tu me cambiaste, Dean.
Dean: Porque suena esto a despedida?
Castiel: Porque asi fue. Te amo.
Dean: Yo a ti, Cas. (The empty appears and Billie opens the door) Cas…
  Castiel: Adios Dean
  Dean: No!
Ok. So… At first glance, they’re pretty much the same until we get to the I love you. BUT let’s dissect it a little bit.
Cas begins with a “Eres el hombre mas amoroso sobre la Tierra” which is not how I would’ve translated “The most caring man on Earth” since “caring” is more like “Cariñoso” rather than “amoroso” which would be “loving”, and yes, there’s a difference. Plus, “el hombre mas amoroso” sounds a bit clunky, so Personally, I’d have gone with “Eres el hombre mas cariñoso en la Tierra”, that would’ve given us more time for the rest of the speech, but I wonder if the translator choice for Amoroso instead was more due to the fact that “amor” (love) is more clearly romantic than “care” (cariño, in a sense, more on this later) and so it foreshadows the end.
Again, with the literal clunkyness we have “Un hombre sin egoismo” (A man without egoism) which sounds weird no matter what language you speak, and it should’ve been “Un hombre dadivoso” (A giving man) or “un hombre desinteresado” (a selfless man) although the second could be mis-construed as “a man without interests” so “dadivoso” would’ve better. But the more puzzling is that the Spanish separates the selfless man from the next, which is REALLY confusing as the English is “the most loving man”, which would be “el hombre mas amoroso” making it quite redundant, so the Spanish changes it to “the most generous man”, “el hombre mas generoso”. To add to this, Cas continues with “that I have seen and I will ever see” instead of “That I know”, because it’s far more poetic. And loving.
So yeah, Mexican Cas is basically saying that Dean Winchester is made of love and puppies.
  Ahem.
The next part “You know, ever since I pulled you out of hell, you’ve changed me” is more or less word for word, and the only thing that changes is that the English sounds more like a question and the Spanish one is an affirmation. YOU KNOW that ever since I pulled you out of hell, you changed me.” Little verb tense play, that doesn't change much except Cas’s resolution to say what he has to say.
And then we get to the part that made me squeal out loud. Because we go from
“Because you cared, I cared. I cared about you. I cared about Sam. I cared about Jack. I cared about the whole world because of you”
  To
“Porque a ti te importa. Y a mi me importa. Me importas tu. Y me importa Sam, me importa Jack, me importa todo el mundo.” Which at first glance is the same, but NOPE.
First change: The original is in past tense “I cared”. Spanish version is in present tense: “I care”.
Which is a little non important thing except when you remember that simple present means “immutable absolute truth that won’t change with time”
Second, the choice of word for care.
I mentioned before that Care can be Cariño, as in filial, non romantic love (Or romantic love pet name, as it can also be Darling. It’s one of THOSE words). Other translations for care include “cuidado” (as in attention, concern, keeping, and worry), and of course “interesarse” (Which also can be care), “preocuparse” (care, bother, trouble, mind, fuss), and yes, “importar” but “importar” ONLY translates to English as a verb as “import”, “matter” “amount to” and notice how none of those words include “love”.
Mexican Cas is not saying “you love the world, and so I do”. Mexican Cas is saying “The world matters to you, and thus it matters to me, but my feelings for the World (and Sam, and Jack) are not in the same league as my feelings for you.”
And then Dean asks “Why does this sound like a Goodbye”, just like in English, in present tense…
And Mexican Cas replies in PAST tense. “Porque asi fue”. And THIS is important because it means that everything he said before WAS the goodbye, and not what comes next. All the rest? Is in the past. “Because it was”. Not “Because it IS”. And the next part? Is their future.
  I love you.
  Te amo.
Simple present. No ambiguity like “te quiero”. Spanish Te amo is for romantic love. Not brotherly, not family, not bro-mantic. ROMANTIC.
It’s like “I’m IN love with you” (Although that’d be “Estoy enamorado de ti” and I doubt that would’ve fit in the time Misha spoke)
And of course, the answer. “Yo a ti, Cas”. Not “And I, you” as I’ve seen it before (And I also thought it was, until transcribing the scene) but a simple “I, you, Cas.” Which ok, pretty cave-speak, but the meaning is pretty clear. Dean Winchester loves his gay angel.
It is also telling that the empty doesn’t appear until AFTER Dean confessed, so no, Mexican Cas is not “happy with the saying”, he had to get to the “happy with the having”.
And when Billy appears, it does seem as if he wants to say something more, but Cas is a love-sick selfsacrificing dumbass and so we all get our hearts broken.
I did get in contact with Dean Winchester’s mexican voice actor, and am waiting for answers to a small interview I did with him which includes the question “did that And I you, Cas” was in the script, and am trying to contact Castiel’s mexican voice actor. So I will be updating you on that. But I hope this clears up some of the questions about how Mexican dubbing made Destiel Canon :D

PLEASE share your ted/trent agenda with the world i'm intrigued by how relatively easy that would be to do in canon
WARNING: SPOILERS FOR TED LASSO UP TO CURRENT EPISODE
Alright well I’ve taken to answering recent asks as top ten lists so here’s another: Top Ten Reasons Why Ted/Trent Should Be Canon:
1. This reddit comment sums it up:
Tumblr media
It’s simply a compelling rom com(munism) plot! What’s more compelling than a journalist falling in love with the person he’s meant to report on! The ethical dilemmas! The slow realisation! Half of this arc was basically already covered in:
2. The episode 1.03 Trent Crimm The Independent. Which is perhaps the best episode of the show and I simply think perhaps we could use more of that energy. Too much Trent on screen never a bad thing unlike Beard sorry to that man and that episode
3. In the episode 2.07 Headspace Trent Crimm exits the bar with what looks to be a male date with a moustache, indicating he is both a) into men and b) moustachesexual. Actually he DOESN’T exit the bar he gets distracted by Ted and tells his date to wait outside while he saunters over to get some goss. But you get the picture.
4. Trent Crimm has a daughter but no wedding ring and APPEARED to be on a date which means it is simply not out of the realms of possibility that he is a divorced dad. Sorry to be wildly ungeneric but I simply think DivorcedDad4DivorcedDad is a great and fresh premise for a tv romance actually.
5. Ted Lasso SHOULD be at least bisexual. - Firstly because nobody on the show is officially LGBT+ and they need a Big Swing to offset how bad their representation is. (no, Disney’s 56th Gay Character adjacent grindr references by Colin isn’t enough for me and also by the way their racial politics are absolutely fucking awful. But this isn’t an ask about that.) Also because the more people get pissed off with bisexual/gay main characters that weren’t marketable or pre-warned the better. Let’s BREAK that pink and satiny ceiling— - Secondly because in the meta plot of Ted Lasso being about Jason Sudeikis recovering from his breakup with Olivia Wilde it would be funny if the answer to his existential crisis was Sucking A Man’s Dick - Thirdly about once an episode he drops some Woke JokeTM thing about another male character being handsome, AND he has a passionate love for musical theatre. Yeah I know he’s just meant to be sooooo perfect positive masculinity etc. but I personally reject Apple TV+’s cookie cutter and did-no-work Manic Pixie Dream Dad and offer this as a fun alternative.
6. My personal opinion on Ted Lasso season 2 is that daddy issues are overdone, and I don’t care about Apple TV+ going over Therapy 101. (Don’t get me wrong, I really love interior character focused therapy stuff if it’s well written! But in S2, it is not.) You know whose panic attacks I DO care about? Eddie Diaz’s comphet panic attacks on 911. Ted Lasso you could learn a thing or two from that! I’m just saying main character gay crises are fun and fresh and sexy!
Tumblr media
7. Every single look Trent Crimm gives Ted Lasso post-1.03 indicates to me he’s DEEPLY smitten despite his smug upper-class self.
8. In the most recent episode 2.11, Trent Crimm sacrifices his journalistic integrity to provide Ted with details. It’s actually embarrassing and all of twitter is on his back over ethical integrity because you NEVER give away a source etc. etc… but HE’S IN LOVE, YOUR HONOUR. In the words of his own (official) twitter:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
9. Ted makes Trent’s daughter cupcakes which implies a quite friendly relationship. Ted’s question in the show of ‘can I be a good father’ and ‘do I have a family I belong to’ can and should be partially answered by taking up parental care duties for his male friend’s child much like Buck 911 and Dean Supernatural—
10. There is no love interest for Ted Lasso that is remotely as compelling. Actually Trent happens to be the least problematic option on the table (other than Sassy, I guess!). (don’t @ me over this yes we KNOW a m/f relationship is going to be the endgame of Apple TV+’s flagship show if you ship ted/sharon or ted/rebecca you’re not under any threat!)

So in my search for characters from TV shows that I believe provide the most significant characterization, representation, development and evolution, I've found the character Willow Rosenberg, and of course there's always been Gabrielle from Xena. But I need more characters that undergo incredibly strong and substantial character development throughout the entire life-span of the TV show and I'm asking for recommendations because you guys know your television shit on Tumblr and I don't watch much TV.
Here are the requirements:
1. (most important) This character has to go through a huge transformation mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually to the capacity where I will disagree with them or feel dissonant towards them and I would feel the need to insert myself in the TV show to call them out or slap them across the face at some points. I want them to SHAKE me. If I don't feel that towards them, they're not worth my time or attention. And believe me, I have a high threshold for this because I like to LEARN.
2. I would prefer cisgender female since that's what I am and I want to be able to relate to and resonate as much as possible but it's not that big of a deal so can be of any gender identity or sexuality or fluctuating.
3. The TV show must be a DRAMA or a dramedy (drama-comedy). Reason for this being I often find pure comedies to have shite writing and the characters can come across annoying or even insulting because of this. So TV shows like 'Glee' is no go for me. Not that that has shite writing. It's just I've already seen it and I wasn't particularly interested in any of the characters from it. Can be any other genre along with DRAMA too. (action, fantasy, sci-fi, horror, thriller, romance, ect.) Suprise me so long as it's not a pure comedy.
4. In order to have significant character characterization, representation, development and evolution for ALL the side and recurring characters and not just the main (I. E. the protagonist/hero of the TV show), the TV show must last longer than 2 seasons. And I don't want no cancelled and left on a cliffhanger bullshit. Full shows with a conclusion.
5. Give me somebody to root for. Meaning can be an antagonist/villain who has a redemption arc of some kind and joins up with the protagonist/hero at some points to help them out or even is the flawed protagonist/hero of the TV show themselves that needs to do some growing. Think of characters like Xena, Spike, Zuko, Ares, Callisto, Korra.
Or an underdog for whatever reason that doesn't recieve the attention or credit they deserve and gains leading ground with more and more screen-time given to them to flesh out their arc with this. Think of characters like Gabrielle, Willow, Katara, Toph.
6. Can be any TV show from any point in time. 80's, 90's, 2000's or recent. Whatever. But preferably something that isn't dated before the 80's so the picture quality is somewhat watchable on a 55 inch screen TV.
7. Can be either live action or animation or a mix of both (I. E Lizzie McGuire) but not a show that's for toddlers. So that leaves teenagers/adolescents/coming-of-age or just all out adult. I have no issue with sex/violence/gore/addiction themes. In fact I'd prefer it for the sake of the character dealing with heavy shit that causes them to go on a roller-coaster ride of emotions often. Remember the point is for me to relate to or resonate with it. I am 28 years old. So unless it's family-oriented like Lizzie McGuire, I don't want Disney/Nickelodeon/Cartoon Network TV shows. And I've seen most of them anyway.
8. If it includes Black/POC or LGBTQ+ representation (which I would prefer it to do so), I must absolutely attest that there be NO QUEERBAITING, NO RACISM, NO HOMO/BI/TRANS/QUEER/XENOPHOBIA within the writing. While I realize that the latter is a good confliction and compelling storyline, understand that I am absolutely fed up of tropes like Bury Your Gays, Man-Inserted, It-Was-All-A Dream/Mental Illness or anything where it makes you percieve any of the characters as complete fucking dicks surrounding this. They can still be complete fucking dicks in other ways.
9. Depending on how dated it is, I want decent graphics, special FX and clever use of environment/props. Anything of a CGI or anime style cannot be lazy because it takes the human realism away from it. I like characters to look HUMANOID. No animal-hybrid shite.
10. Does NOT have to be English or of an American/Western production. Can be of any language or culture whatsoever. I am trying to get more into watching something beyond my own backgarden as far as languages/communications go. Obviously, it needs to have English subtitles or text of some kind though because there'd be no point to me watching it if I can't even understand it. I only speak/read English.
That's my lot for requirements and the dos and donts. You have free reign with everything else. Somebody please answer this post. 🙏

HSMTMTS 2x05 Review
The Quinceañero was a truly historic ep featuring the first time two boys have ever kissed on a Disney show. Let’s dig in!
We got the second same-sex kiss in Disney history tonight, Big Shot had the first last Friday, and the first kiss between two boys in Disney history. It’s a huge step forward. That’s not to say that Disney is going to start approving more same-sex kisses or lgbtq relationships or characters but the door is now open and at least some other shows and movies will be able to eventually follow in HSMTMTS steps.
Really nice cover of The Climb, Joe has such a great voice. It was cute that young Seb had watched young Carlos’ dance vid and felt inspired. Frankie and Joe being an irl couple certainly helps give Seblos a good rapport but it also helps that creator and showrunner Tim Federle is an openly gay man himself. I think if a straight man was showrunner we probably wouldn’t get such dedication to Seblos as a couple.
It was a really funny ep too: Carlos saying his love language is riddles, Ricky asking Nini who they talk to when doing their confessionals, Carlos saying Miss Jenn was a master of smoke and mirrors, Benjamin Mazzara and Mike Bowen interacting. My personal favourite gags were when Big Red said he always wanted a nickname and Kourtney immediately did an office stare and when Nini said Picasso was a terrible person.
Gina still going through it. Kourtney is right that it doesn’t really make sense that Gina is now going to all this trouble for Carlos but to be honest the writing and pacing has been disjointed so far this season so a lot of things aren’t flowing as well as they need to. Is what Gina regrets convincing Ricky to go back on stage as that helped get Rini back together? That’s petty but fair and also true to teenage emotions (though she shouldn’t beat herself up too much, Rini were clearly on the path to getting back together by that point anyway).
Jesus Christ, Ricky needs to read the room. Last ep he correctly realized that Gina wouldn’t want to hear about his Nini issues and tried to stop Big Red from mentioning them but now he’s just doing it himself? Obviously they’re trying to drill in the fact that for now Rina is one sided but it’s a little much. Also really doesn’t make sense that Ricky wouldn’t go to Kourtney or Big Red for this kind of advice.
Sofia Wylie was killing it this ep, both her and Joe are showstoppers. A Dancer’s Heart was great and she did a good job of acting on the verge of tears almost the entire ep
At least EJ actually thought to ask Gina how she’s feeling though and she clearly appreciated it after she got over her shock. It does seem that reports of Portwell’s demise were greatly exaggerated, with the music and the longing stares they’re setting up for at least EJ to have a crush on Gina. Hell even Mazzara picked up on it at the end. I had noted last week that it seemed like Gina’s story line in S2 was being thrown out of balance by the writers dropping a planned Portwell plot and sure enough this week we actually begin to see Gina’s story arc not being entirely her pining over Ricky.
EJ also benefits by being given something to do instead of just standing around in the back. I’m glad he took Mazzara up on the AV club offer and they have a nice mentor-mentee relationship going on. It’s also a nice little parallel with 1x05 when Gina told off EJ and had a moment with Ricky and now in 2x05 Gina tells off Ricky and has a moment with EJ.
Matt seemingly dismissed Portwell as a friendship rather than even hinting at something between them. I guess he could have been told to keep it under wraps as much as possible but odd that they wouldn’t hype it a bit; it’s not like this came completely out of left field, people were wondering if Portwell might happen because of the moment they had in 1x10 and the facetime call they had before S2. Sofia has already said that Gina will have love interests this season and EJ being one, even if it’s brief, would make whole lot of sense since there’s really no one else for except Jack who only shows up much later and doesn’t seem to be in more than an ep or two.
Rini was sweet tonight. Yes Ricky is being clingy which stems in large part from his mom’s abandonment and in fairness Ricky and Nini have probably been used to spending much of their time with each other since they were kids. Loved that ‘I think you kinda you know’’ call back tonight. Looks like Nini will be cast as the Rose which should be interesting.
Miss Jenn is pulling Mike Bowen, Ben Mazzara, and Zach Roy. Good for her! Jike shippers certainly feasted tonight as Mike crashed a teen bday party just to see Miss Jenn and we got confirmation that everyone’s fave Disney Dilf was born in the 70s and must be no older than 51.
Well gotta love Lily’s commitment to bringing down East High and drinking scalding hot black coffee. She really seems like she just stepped off the set of Glee
Really hope we see those puppies and man was that wolf adorable
Not both HSMTMTS and Love Victor both making Okay Boomer jokes (it worked when Pilar said it to Felix but not when Ricky said it to his dad)
Big Red exposing Kourtney and Howie was good and it looks like their plot kicks into high gear next ep
Bet Tim thought he was real clever for that shot of Mazzara, Mike, and Miss Jenn in a triangle
A well shot ep except for one weird  and abrupt cut from Mazzara saying Caswell to Seblos outside the barn
Looking Ahead:
EJ stopping Gina from leaving would certainly further their relationship and would parallel him being the one to bring her back in S1. I still don’t get why they didn’t just use the Valentine’s chocolates as a plot device to further this plot; just have EJ secretly send them as he was also lonely and you can still have Gina think they were from Ricky.
From what I’ve seen online this Portwell hint has been controversial. It’s true that there’s an age gap between the characters of 2ish years and a much bigger one between the actors but I don’t think that will stop Tim as he already had EJ date Nini. I’ve also seen comments that it would be a bad idea since EJ is leaving at the end of S2 once he graduates but he’s not actually leaving, they’ll keep him around in some fashion until the current juniors graduate.
So far it seems like Rini is the Rucas of hsmtmts, Rina is the Lucaya, and Portwell is the Joshaya.
Kowie starts progressing a bit next ep and we may possible see Antoine next week or the week after according to Larry.
Presumably Ricky’s clinginess starts causing trouble between him and Nini.
Still so funny that North High just up and decided to do Beauty and the Beast just to bring down East High.
Until next week wildcats

Rating Versions of Harry Osborn: Updated
Wanted to redo this post with a more comprehensive and inclusive list of Harrys
616 Comics:
Tumblr media
Just such a good and complex character. The OG Harry. His relationship with Peter just adds so much depth to every Green Goblin arc because of the inherent conflict of Peter knowing he needs to take down Norman Osborn, but not wanting to hurt or lose his best friend. (If you’ve read Kindred no you haven’t.) He’s still... ugly... I’m sorry 616 Harry... I love you so much but they did you dirty... Some artists do their best with what they have but... I’m not a big fan of western comic style in general so that doesn’t help. Has three failed marriages by the time he’s 30 because he’s gay and deeply closeted.  8/10
Spider-Man the Animated Series (1994):
Tumblr media
The Harry plotline in this show reeeeally doesn’t feel earned, because the first time we see Harry having an active role in the show, he asks Peter to move in with him because Norman wants him to have a responsible studious roommate  (a detail from the comics I was EXTREMELY excited to see play out), and Peter comments that they barely know each other. Ultimately they live together for all of one day before Peter decides to move back in with Aunt May. The next time we see Harry, MJ calls him Peter’s best friend, despite the fact that we haven’t seen Peter hanging out with—or even MENTIONING—Harry since the last episode when they were basically strangers. Really it feels like he’s just there to cause romantic drama as the guy MJ graciously settles for when she gives up on Peter. I found the whole goblin plotline kind of boring and lacking in depth.  3/10
Raimi Trilogy:
Tumblr media
I was never interested in Raimi Harry until after I started liking and exploring other versions of Harry, because I just thought he was kinda a shit friend. He’s a pretty strong character overall, but his motivations aren’t as obvious. He’s torn between his love of Peter as his best friend, and his bitterness towards Peter for being the man his father wished he was. I don’t think Raimi Harry really wanted MJ, he just wanted to get back at Peter in a way by taking someone that HE loved. However I feel like his characterization kind of sways back and forth between sympathetic and not depending on how he’s written in the scene, and it disappoints me that the thing that gets him to stop tormenting Peter is the butler telling him out of nowhere that Norman died from his own blade, rather than any real character development on his part. 6/10
Spectacular Spider-Man:
Tumblr media
I still haven’t watched all of this show because I... can’t STAND this version of Peter... but I’ve watched many clips with this boy and he’s just... so sweet... He only wants to be loved and keeps getting his heart broken. Deserves better. On everything. He deserves a better father, a better best friend, better love interests, everything. I do really enjoy the way they incorporated 616 Harry’s drug abuse into this show with the Globulin Green, it was a very clever way to incorporate that aspect of his character, but tone it down for younger viewers. I’ve watched the scene of him getting “unmasked” as the Green Goblin about a million times it’s very good. 8/10
Ultimate Spider-Man:
Tumblr media
I love him. Most people fear drifting apart from those close to us, so watching Harry struggle with the new and increasing distance between him and Peter as Peter seemingly makes new, “better” friends is downright heartbreaking. Especially when he overhears Sam implying that Peter only hangs out with him for his money which is something he’s clearly experienced a lot. (Seriously Sam what the fuck.) I also love his struggle with Venom throughout the series as a metaphor for his anger and bitterness, it’s never truly gone even when they work hard to remove it. It’s always there to bubble back up under extreme amounts of stress, especially when Norman is involved. (Also this isn’t a Norman review, but USM Norman is the only version of Norman Osborn that has rights and he works hard to be the father Harry deserves.) Had an honest to God meet-cute with Peter like come on???? Its unfortunate how much they cut back Harry’s role in the third and fourth season, I really would have loved to see more of him. Threw a party specifically so he could ignore Peter to his face because he was jealous and I respect that level of pettiness. 9/10
Spider-Man: The New Animated Series
Tumblr media
I didn’t think it was possible to create an uglier Harry than 90s Harry but this blonde, fuck-boy lookin creepass came and proved me wrong. Who the FUCK is this?? Doesn’t have any recognizable characteristics of Harry Osborn besides being rich and hating Spider-Man. Also just... look at him. I wouldn’t trust this man anywhere NEAR my drink at a party. #NotMySon -3/10
The Amazing Spider-Man:
Tumblr media
He’s okay. I think he has some very emotional scenes and good chemistry with Peter, but it’s dampened by the fact that he wasn’t present in the first film and had to share the second with like two other main plot lines. Ultimately ends up being the least sympathetic version of Harry Osborn because he became the original Green Goblin and killed Gwen, rather than following in his father’s footsteps. That’s not to say he’s a completely unsympathetic character. He has a strong motivator in his fear of death, and I do think the choice they made for his character were interesting and could have developed really well, but they didn’t get the chance since the franchise was dropped. 5/10
PS4 Spider-Man:
Tumblr media
ABSOLUTELY ADORE HIM. WISH WE GOT MORE OF HIM. HAVING YOUR EXPECTATIONS OF HARRY OSBORN BROKEN AS YOU SNEAK AROUND NORMAN’S PENTHOUSE AND LEARN THAT HE’S BEEN SECRETLY STRUGGLING WITH A GENETIC DISEASE HE’S BEEN HIDING FROM HIS BEST FRIENDS FOR YEARS WAS -chef’s kiss- GENIUS. PLEASE GIVE US A SECOND GAME WITH VENOM HARRY. 10/10
Marvel’s Spider-Man (2017):
Tumblr media
Still easily my favorite version of Harry Osborn. When I first began watching the show I was startled by their decision to make Harry a science genius like Peter because it was so different from their usual dynamic, and many people who aren’t fans of the show point to this as something they dislike. But I actually ended up really loving the decision. It gives a different flavor to Harry in how he reacts to the events of the show and how we interpret his character traits, while still being very inherently Harry Osborn. Harry is jealous of Peter, he loves him dearly, but there’s always this ember of bitter envy ready to burst into anger whenever the plot creates friction between them. This is one of the defining traits of their relationship and in most versions it’s not hard to understand why. Peter has what Harry wants. He’s intelligent, he has potential, and most importantly he’s loved. Peter is the son Harry knows Norman wishes he had, and that creates a wedge between them. Marvel’s Spider-Man changes this dynamic. Harry can easily stand toe-to-toe with Peter in terms of intelligence, and in fact they often work together to create things or solutions Peter couldn’t have come up with on his own. That initial wedge between them isn’t there, creating a very endearing and loving friendship that we know is doomed to sour because it isn’t enough. MSM Harry could be the person Norman wants him to be, and that places the full weight of his father’s impossibly high expectations on his shoulders, always within reach but never quite achievable. So it makes a lot more sense why Peter initially has a low guard towards Norman (as opposed to some other series where Peter seems oddly dismissive of Harry’s justified complaints) and Harry’s own steadfast loyalty to his father. On the surface Norman seems like a perfectly loving parent, he encourages his son, he created an entire school for him when he was wrongfully accused of sabotage, it’s only when you start to dig deeper into their relationship that you see the subtle manipulations and the issues Harry has from constantly chasing his father’s approval. This creates a Harry who is desperate for validation and extremely sensitive to rejection, which colors his relationship with Peter throughout the show. I’m still mad he got nerfed in the second and third seasons because Disney is homophobic. TLDR: I may be biased ... Infinity/10
MCU:

Where is he? Who knows? Man missing in action.  ?????/10

hey Kip! I’m sending asks into different writer’s askboxes, inquiring about cool themes/development facts/stuff the author wants to share about their personal favorite work of their own. What’s yours? :)
Ok so this ask is old and when I first got it I was like “dang I don’t really have a lot to talk about, what should I talk about I could those revalink headcanons the Kip Cut that turned into a working fic uhh hmm maybe I’ll just make something new to talk about real quick” and then I did and now there is a 12+ chapter Revalink fic in my drafts and I’m gonna talk about that now, whoopsie doopsie [click "j" to skip]
aHEM, OK so allow me to break out the primary school white board because yeah, I have a lot of thoughts and the oxford comma has not yet made it’s home into my brain. oh and spoilers for paraphrase. for both all of Chapter one and future events in later chapters, but it’s really nothing you couldn’t surmise from the AO3 tags
so I really wanted to tell the story of Revali and Link learning and struggling to love again after the less-than-fortunate events of Botw, but I wanted a...how you say...fresher, approach on the subject? Like I know we always say that fanfic writers writing the same tropes and stories time and time again is good because we eat that shit up--but at the same time I had asian parenting as was told never to half ass anything ever, no matter what. So now I'm gay and extra and have depression maybe and oh would you look at that @motherhyrule has dropped a beautiful revalink prompt right into my lap
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Great so now that we have, that, I shall take you on the step by step process on how to make a :sparkles: story. So step one is to spend at least five to eleven business days for your white board to dismantle your genre and themes and work them around your character arcs. Luckily I have prepared one ahead of time
Tumblr media
s*breaks out those laser pointers that uni professors use* So let's start with defining genre. As define because I HATE you, fuck you. I want you to suffer and writhe on the ground, motherfucker. How dare you think that I would give you nothing but pure predictable fluff, fuck you and yours
is the set of expectations that your audience has when consuming a piece of media
And the great thing about fanfiction is that unlike movies or book where the genres are more vague like, "oh it's a noir mystery genre. so there's a crime, maybe a murder, and a detective and a criminal." or "oh it's a teen romance. so there's some white people and a morally questionable six-pack 18 year old love interest that will be painted as desirable for some reason" BUT with fanfiction HALF of the work out the window, because as soon as you see those #revalink #aro sidon #zelpha #revali is an idiot and #found family tags you already know what's up.
Now what's so great about genre and expectation? Well the fun thing about it is that
I will use it to fucking break you.
... ... ...
<3 For example! <3
In Chapter 1: Holes, you already expect there to be revalink, you already expect them to be soulmates with the soulmarks and there's angst and yadayada ya. Revali and Link have to match because thatttss what this is all about, this is about them! This is about cute, little soulmarks and romantic words!
But whoooopsie doopsie [disney channel laugh track plays] they DON'T match anymore! Link's got a different mark! The number one rule of this entire genre has been broken whoooooooooooooooops. *ba dum tiss*
You might notice with a lot of my writing that I do this a lot, this whole..."oop but there's one little thing that's different." TebaSaki sick fic? Ok cool, but what if Teba burns an irreplaceable relic of the Rito champion to fight a wizzrobe first to characterize why his dumbass clicks with Saki. Mipha deciding to persue Link? Ok what if she chases after a dragon to externalize this conflict as she pierces it's flesh for a scale. Link fighting a Lynel? Ok but what if it's actually a sidlink angst fic in disguise and it's also world building on how Link deals with the bloodmoon that erases all of his efforts which is sort of similar to how his existence was erased from Hyrule 100 years ago mwaahahaha! Ok now that I say this outloud I think I just have a pattern of using fight scenes to externalize character growth. I like fight scenes...anyways.
I think another great thing about the realm of fanfiction is that with the tagging system, I can basically use a chekhov's gun sort of deal, without doing any writing. You know I'm gonna use that gun marked "soulmates" but you don't know when I'm gonna shoot it, and you SURE as hell don't know how.
And huzzah! One of the main points of conflict both drives the tension between Revali and Link, solidifies the unique genre and setting of this world, while also creating a new mystery that will carry over for the next few chapters.
Is Revali right in that Link's rebirth makes him destined for someone new now? What will Link do with the information that his soulmark has changed? Why did it change? Did Revali's change as well? How does anything fucking work right now?
And sure, you might be able to tell where things will end with them, but you sure as fuck will not know how because I HATE you. Fuck you. I want you to suffer and writhe on the ground, motherfucker. How dare you think that I would give you nothing but pure predictable fluff. I am not your goddamn fairy godmother, I will do as I fucking please. You will suffer as you fucking deserve, fuck you and your little tiny--
Tumblr media
/j
Oh! But you might have noticed on my little planning whiteboard thing that there was a little T-Chart! For Revali and Link! That's because the next important thing besides plot (and in a lot of cases, including this one, it's argued to be even MORE important than plot) is
~CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT~
[to the tune of that history of the world video on youtube]
So yes, it's a little T-Chart outlining their character views in relation to the themes. And the great thing about themes is that they're not something you can necessarily predict in the same way you can with the genre and plot.
But now see, I'm very lazy so I'm just gonna plagiarize @hyrule-kingdom-updates thingy [that you should read btw] because they said my point quite clear enough
Tumblr media
Now I don't really need to care about those points about bond and relationships and being understood, because I'm dealing with already established canon characters. I'm not some NERD who dabbles with entire casts of ocs who even cares about ocs not me that's for sure ahaahahaahahahahahaahahahahahAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH *cries in my orphaned WTTU fic* AHAHAHA*sobs*DONT FUCKING LOOK AT ME THAT WAY I SWEAR--
Tumblr media
/j I love ocs
But the points I do wanna focus on is the idea that characters provide new perspectives on the theme, and that characters growth can be tracked based on their wants, lies, and needs.
So see, themes can be predicted the same as genre/plot because while you can have the same fanfic plots and tropes, theme will always vary!
Sometimes it's a journey of selfworth with Revali! Sometimes it's an exploration of trauma with Link. Sometimes it's about how you deal with the vulnerabilities of love with Mipha. Sometimes there's straight up NOOOO theme, and people just be fucking, and kissing, and baking, and having a good time. And that is totally fine too!
But I'm not a fucking coward.
I'm gonna weave in themes with my plot, because I fucking can.
I'm not a weakling like you.
Do you hear me, 2019 Kip? Do you hear me Demmers? Do you hear me Quill? I'm coming for your ass. You think you're so great, but I'm coming for you. Rest assured that your graves will be as deep as your sculptured pride--
Tumblr media
Heeeere is that T-Chart again, plus more!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
yyyyyYou might notice that Revali and Link are quite parallel, to paraphrase. Ayoooo, see what I did there? *dabs* I'm a genius. Anywho
They both start off the same way: 100 years ago they were in love and happy. Basically the equivalent of childish naivety. For the first time in their lives, life is whimsical and charming, and they make each other happy. In fact, it's almost a flaw with how they perceive this happiness. But don't worry! It doesn't last long!
You know what happens.
I think the chart is pretty self explanatory. Revali builds walls fast enough to give a republican a wet dream. Meanwhile Link makes every aromantic in the chat groan with his doubled down sentiments in the idea that his chances of being truly happy again are gone.
Now, I can't exactly describe the full on process of the inbetweens, and where Revali and Link are gonna go from here, because...you have to read it for yourself! Heehee...but something I did think was fun was how these character views on the themes are revealed. Because you'll notice that, I never give exposition. Ever.
Ok well, let me rephrase that. I never give exposition scenes. I will never give you a big LOTR fancy wizard scene explaining the ins and outs of a character's question or the world's magic or whatever. I'm a very impatient Kip, and I value efficiency. Nonono, it's all about multi tasking, baby!
Chapter 1: Holes is divided into three parts.
Post 100 Years - Medoh (Establishes Ghost Rev/Bonk Head Link's view)
100 Years Ago - Flight Range (Establishes old Revalink views)
Post 100 years - Mark (Develops Ghost Rev/Bonk Head Link's view in contrast to who they once were)
I think the way that you structure flashbacks is incredible vital, as it's a very quick way to characterize people without having them say stuff like "I used to be like you, until I took an arrow to the knee" or whatever.
And with the main structure of the chapters and the fic as a whole is focus on their characters, that means I can hide whatever other stuff I want in those scenes, becuase you're too busy absorbing the fun character stuff to realizing I'm giving you boring exposition. Like for example:
Post 100 Years - Medoh and Mark
Foreshadowing for the end of the fic
Set up connection to Medoh with Revali
Link has defeated Windblight
Link has been visiting Revali every night for the past few days
Link has already met Kass and presumably Teba
Link doesn't have the Mastersword
Revali's Gale is still an ability that needs master and practice on Link's end
And that's just some of the stuff.
And see, the only reason I can efficiently give all of this information regarding character, and even exposition, is because of the theme. The themes make everything relevant, and everything circles and encompasses one another, so there's absolutely no wasted space. I mean don't even get me started on how it's gonna be to characterize the other characters around this
Tumblr media
I don't wanna talk about the other characters too much either because that's spoilers, but you can probably take a gandar based on my notes.
And oh my god this is just on the theme of the faults that come with "soulmates" and "true love" and all that, and how even magical destined relationships still require work and effort, and that no one thing or person solves all your problems. And that's not even TOUCHING the shit on trauma and scars. I didn't think it was even possible for me to talk about botw without touching on that, ha. Ah well, I've been talking for too long.
Revalink has a lot o' writing potential so das pretty cool yeah, I am excite

EPISODE👏 REVIEW👏 hsmtmts season 2 episode 10: get ready for some enthusiastic writing and a little too much looking into details
first off seb doing the intro made my heart happy i love him
ok i know everyone has been saying it but there is no way in hell they’re winning the menkies. unless the writers just go with the main character favoritism route, there’s just no way. however for the sake of comedy, watching ashlyn give us everything in the transformation scene and ricky being an absolute disaster is SO funny to me. like shout out to joshua because that scene made me laugh so hard. also a trio i need more of is kourt, red and ej. i just feel like they would be dramatic gossipy bitches and i love that for them.
normally i think ms. jenn’s reactions are over the top but after seeing the shit show that just occurred 2 mins before... i think her reaction is very valid because oh god.
continuing with the theme of friendship dynamics we haven’t seen a lot of but we absolutely need more of, ashlyn and ricky!! that scene was so sweet and wholesome. i’m so so so glad the writers didn’t fall into the trap of making characters take sides after a break up. i just feel like it’s been done a million times before. but seeing ashlyn being so genuine when checking up in ricky made me so happy. the caswells remain being the superior characters (including gina obvs)
ms. jenn and mr. mazzarra are cute don’t get me wrong but they should’ve spent more time developing that relationship instead giving ms. jenn like 3 random love interests and that’s all i’ll say on that.
i love imagining what characters are saying when they’re just ad libbing. like what could ej, gina, ricky and red be talking about before carlos shows up to start the scene?? my guess is they’re all gushing about how amazing ash is and no i don’t take criticisms on that.
alright i’ll say it. the seblos drama is weak at best. they didn’t spend enough time developing it and kind of pushed it to the background so when it was one of the main focuses of the episode it was kind of like ok?? HOWEVER i did love the resolution to it and the deeper look into their individual characters. (i’ll talk more about this later)
carlos calling ms. jenn mother and everyone immediately knowing who he was talking about sent me omfg. but also who the fuck let these high schoolers try to figure out this transformation scene by themselves?? they collectively have 2 brain cells and they just bounce around between the 9 of them depending on the scene. but playful sleepover competition!! also gina nudging ej when he goes a little too ej 1.0 was everything.
i hate lily and i love sassy red. that’s all.
(im going to talk about the boys/girls sleepovers like they’re each one continuous scene respectively because it’s way easier than switching back and forth)
fun new friendship dynamics!! the boys!! sebbie and the girls! iconic. i know that the show is meant to be in a mockumentary style so we only see parts of the characters lives but i would give my left arm to see the boys getting closer and becoming friends. this is also the first scene where i really noticed ricky’s shirt. ricky is queer disney are just cowards. i’m not a big ricky/ ej shipper but the pretty boy had me feeling some type of way. carlos being worried about seb and their relationship and then red being like well this is why. bc he’s got a spy on the inside was peak friendship. but seriously disney?? just say gay. it’s not a bad word. now imma freak out about PORTWELL OMFG I WAS ALREADY FREAKING OUT DURING THIS SCENE SO YOU CAN IMAGINE HOW WELL I WAS DOING LATER ON. but ej just being like im not ready to put myself out there because of nini i don’t wanna get rejected... again. my heart went out to him. you can really see how much he’s grown as a person. but sure ej y’all are “buddies” also him saying the one thing i’m proud of from my time with nini was letting her go and ricky’s reaction to that hurt me to my core.
alright let’s talk about the girls and seb. first off i love that they’re actually working and the boys are doing fuck all LOL. seb actually talking about how he feels?? good for him. i hate that he thinks that carlos is only with him because there’s limited options but at least he’s talking about it. a moment of silence for ash’s scissor bucket (i won’t make a gay joke. i won’t make a gay joke. i won’t-) anyways... i really thought that maybe ash would know about portwell but it’s fucking EVERYONE. like y’all are that perceptive about other peoples relationships but not your own?? that’s why all y’all have relationship drama. gina not wanting to put herself out there because she’s afraid of getting hurt?? ouch. gina thinking ej is just being nice?? ouch but also gina, sis?? what. also nini reacting that way to the chocolates is so out of pocket. like 1) y’all aren’t dating anymore so what’s got you so pressed? 2) gina made it clear that they weren’t actually from ricky 3) nini you know they had some sort of chemistry before you and ricky got back together so this really shouldn’t be that surprising.
anyways the scene with ricky and carlos broke me. the decision for ricky to not show nini the song was so mature. despite wanting to get her back, he KNOWS that that would only drag her back and that’s not fair to her and he knows it. but his awareness of seblos’s relationship and wanting to help carlos work things out with seb was so wholesome and so sweet and is kind of a big moment of character development for him this season. like he was generally very selfish this season (again i’m a ricky apologist til the day i die but he was so selfish) and seeing him take the focus away from his problems to help carlos out was so sweet. also i need more ricky/carlos friendship moments.
kourt talking about howie learning her love language?? bitch you mean espionage?? i mean me too but that’s so fucking funny
ALRIGHT THIS IS THE PARAGRAPH WHERE I SCREAM ABOUT PORTWELL!!! i am so so so so happy right now about this. the fact that ej asked about risotto but for real was so satisfying and was blatantly like him saying i know we faked being in a relationship but what about it not being fake and omfg that’s so amazing. also gina being skeptical and asking if ash put him up to it and him saying not that i know of?? THE PARALLELS?? also gina this whole season has been talking about signs and finding reasons to stay, finding signs to know if someone is right for her and you can literally see the moment she realizes she said the same thing about the duke sweatshirt to jack. SHE KNOWS THIS IS HER SIGN and that’s so special to me. also ej’s nervous laugh after she says yes?? omfg. let’s look at ej’s character. historically he’s confident, cocky and generally puts on this facade of having his shit together but gina makes him nervous (in a good way). he doesn’t feel like he has to pretend to be confident around her. he’s showing her that he’s just as nervous as she is about this and that is just *chefs kiss* honestly not to be an andi mack stan but ej’s little nervous chuckle and ok after she says yes sounds like he’s letting out a breath he didn’t realize he was holding which seriously parallels tj after the tyrus confession. i’m just saying. ALSO GINA’S LITTLE EXCITED WALK BACK TO THE GROUP AHHHHHH
the seblos song?? i have no notes. it was incredible. frankie killed that shit. it was such a good song. so sweet. so wholesome. also ricky and carlos’s hug was so fucking meaningful to both of them and you can tell. ricky was absolutely beaming because he helped the two of them and it feels like a little bit of season 1 ricky shining through.
WHO THE FUCK LET A BUNCH OF HIGH SCHOOLERS RIG A KID IN THE AIR COMPLETELY UNSUPERVISED?? of course ricky fucking fell. that group shares 2 brain cells. obviously some dumb shit was going to happen
