Karen Pirie renewed for season 2, based on Val McDermid's second book
Our favourite fearless Scottish investigator is back.
Karen Pirie has been renewed for season 2 after a hugely successful first run, which launched with 6.6 million viewers and averaged 5.9m across the series - making it one of the most watched new dramas on ITV last year.
The series, which was also in the top 10 dramas on ITVX, was adapted by Emer Kenny from Val McDermid’s hugely popular cold case novels. Now, the second season will again be based on the international bestselling books, this time adapted from A Darker Domain, the second in the Karen Pirie novel series.
The new season will see Lauren Lyle (Outlander, Vigil) return as the young and fearless Scottish investigator with a quick mouth and tenacious desire for the truth. This time round, she'll be reopening the investigation into the unsolved kidnapping of a wealthy young heiress and her baby son back in 1985.
Commissioned by ITV from World Productions, the well-known producers of Line of Duty and The Pembrokeshire Murders, this series will see Kenny (The Curse, Save Me) return to write and executive produce the three two-hour-long episodes alongside Scottish writer Gillian Roger Park (Sneakerhead, The Young Offenders).
Speaking about the news of season 2, Lyle said: “I'm thrilled that we will continue the life of our fearless young detective Karen Pirie, and of course, her bumbag. I've known for a while how well the show has gone down behind the scenes so it's been a joy to see audiences want more.
"It's a creative honour to work alongside Emer Kenny with the backbone of Val McDermid's story, season 1 was incredibly exciting building an original character we hadn't seen before. I look forward to getting the gang back together and finally being able to answer the question: ‘Please say there will be a season 2?’ with an ‘Oh yes.’"
ITV's drama commissioner Huw Kennair Jones also commented: “We're thrilled the audience loves Karen Pirie as much as we do and can't wait to get going on Val McDermid's fantastic A Darker Domain with World Productions. Returning to the world and characters that Emer so skillfully created and Lauren so brilliantly realised promises to be as exciting and fresh as season 1.”
In an exclusive interview with RadioTimes.com, Kenny previously said that she was “really keen to see what people respond to” in the first season in order to find out “what they like about” it and then “kind of roll with that after it comes out.” So, it’s safe to say we’re pleased over the news that the Fife-based detective will be returning to our screens once more.
Karen Pirie season 2 will premiere on ITV1 and ITVX, with the previous first season available to stream on ITVX now.

Funny tale (kinda). I got a Netflix notification for a new movie, I watched the trailer and at the end, in the credits, displays "Eleanor Tomlinson" as an actress... haha wasn't a terror movie but gave me chills 🤣.
P.s. A day closer to #AllOfThoseVoices 💙
She’s a well known actress, I think! Very pretty, too. As the DMA song goes, Life Is A Game of Changing.
Addendum: my random thought.
Sofie Nyvang is obviously young, a bit new to to the game, somewhat head-over-heels with the idea of being instantly famous.
But the game is so obvious at this point. Anyone could diagram it.
Louis and Sofie were papped for the specific information that Louis was seeing a girl— he was “off the table.” She could have been any non-celebrity girl, an attractive female to fill in a space. In fact, Louis was waiting for her to do the pap walk.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Mirror reported the Eleanor and Louis split on 6 Jan 23.
The Nyvang rumors started 14 Feb 2023. Pap photos were taken on 15 Feb.
So Louis was single for about one month… out of the last 7.5 years. One month of no female companionship.
If we are to believe this Tiktokker, the Nyvang photos were not passed around tabloid sites for bids. They were meant to be seen by the One Direction fandom to “spread organically,” via fans. A few days later, it was reported in Page Six, and some outlets mention that he has a son with Briana Jungwirths, named Freddie Reign (Eonline, sportskeeda).
It’s interesting that Louis felt the pressure to present a new female face as soon as Faith In The Future promo was done, and before his world tour started. The fact is that Louis valued releasing this information for publicity purposes more than he values a semblance of privacy. The real question is why.
A friend says:
Why it couldn’t be a 28-year-old session musician instead of a 22-year-old influencer .... sigh. But here is where I think LTHQ’s and Louis’ full appreciation for fandom demographics and dynamics becomes clear — I hope I’m wrong, but they tend to view fandom as devoted teenagers who want to be social media famous, dating Louis, and wearing matching concert t-shirts. So they present a 22-year-old influencer. Louis sees his sisters in his fandom. He thinks Sofie is aspirational for us.
Does Louis think of his fandom as replicas of his influencer sisters?

Mardi Gras/Fat Tuesday/Güdisdienstag
Fat Tuesday or ‘Mardi Gras’ is on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday and at the start of Lent. We’re making sure that you have the time of your life during this week-long period of festivities. The origins of Mardi Gras link back to pagan celebrations of the arrival of spring and fertility, such as the Roman festivals of Saturnalia that celebrated the same and that of Lupercalia which was also characterized by banqueting and merrymaking. This day is celebrated with parades and feasts before the start of the fasting season of Lent.
History of Fat Tuesday
‘Mardi Gras’ is French for Fat Tuesday. It’s also called Shrove Tuesday or Pancake Tuesday in different parts of the world. Mardi Gras is synonymous with carnival celebrations in New Orleans, Venice, and Rio, although the day is also celebrated in a similar fashion in countries with large Roman Catholic populations.
Festivities similar to Mardi Gras date back to ancient Roman times where people celebrated the harvest season. When Christianity arrived in Rome, these popular local traditions were incorporated into the new faith. The debauchery typical of Mardi Gras precedes Lent, the 40-day period of fasting and penance leading to Easter Sunday.
As Christianity and Mardi Gras spread from Rome to other European countries, new traditions were born and some old ones took on new forms. What began as a holiday rooted in religious tradition became a cultural phenomenon, leading to binging and parties that weren’t always followed by the 40-days of penance.
Mardi Gras celebrations began in America when French explorers Pierre Le Moyne d’Iberville and Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville landed near present-day New Orleans, Louisiana. A few years later, New Orleans and other French settlements observed the holiday with street parties, masked balls, and lavish dinners organized by social clubs called ‘Krewes.’
Today, Mardi Gras is celebrated all over the world integrating local styles and native traditions. From Rio’s weeklong Carnival festivities to Quebec’s Winter Carnival and Germany’s Karneval that includes parades, costume balls, and a tradition where women cut off men’s ties to symbolize women’s power.
Besides the procession of floats, colorful beads also feature in celebrations in the U.S. and a king cake with a trinket or baby figurine, to represent the Christ Child, baked inside it.

1837 The First Mardi Gras Parade
The first recorded Mardi Gras parade is held in New Orleans.
The 1920s Origins of Parade Throws
The tradition of ‘parade throws,’ where the float riders throw beads to the crowds, originates with the Rex Krewe, the city's oldest social club.

Where Darkness Blooms by Andrea Hannah
Tumblr media
Andrea Hannah's Where Darkness Blooms is a supernatural thriller about an eerie town where the sunflowers whisper secrets and the land hungers for blood.
The town of Bishop is known for exactly two things: recurring windstorms and an endless field of sunflowers that stretches farther than the eye can see. And women—missing women. So when three more women disappear one stormy night, no one in Bishop is surprised. The case is closed and their daughters are left in their dusty shared house with the shattered pieces of their lives. Until the wind kicks up a terrible secret at their mothers’ much-delayed memorial.
With secrets come the lies each of the girls is forced to confront. After caring for the other girls, Delilah would like to move on with her boyfriend, Bennett, but she can’t bear his touch. Whitney has already lost both her mother and her girlfriend, Eleanor, and now her only solace is an old weathervane that seems to whisper to her. Jude, Whitney's twin sister, would rather ignore it all, but the wind kicks up her secret too: the summer fling she had with Delilah's boyfriend. And more than anything, Bo wants answers and she wants them now. Something happened to their mothers and the townsfolk know what it was. She’s sure of it.
Bishop has always been a strange town. But what the girls don’t know is that Bishop was founded on blood—and now it craves theirs.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. — Psalm 23:4
It would be nice if life was always sunshine and roses. It would be nice if life was always mountain top after mountain top. There would never be any gray skies or rain. There would never be any dark valleys or impassable rivers. Everything would always go our way. Everything would always turn out right.
We don't live in a world like that, obviously, and all of us have to come to grips with that fact in one way or another. How will we handle it? Will we try to go it alone? Will we rely on family and friends? The trouble with relying on ourselves is that we are limited, fallible people who don't always have the abilities necessary for the journey, or the knowledge necessary to find our way. Friends and family can be helpful, but they are not always willing to help, or they are not always in a position to help, or they have nothing better to offer. When rain, valleys, and darkness come our way, people are not very reliable when all is said and done.
In the journey of life, David does not ultimately rely on himself or family and friends for direction and help. For David, the Lord is his shepherd (Psalm 23:1). He turns to the Lord for help in negotiating the perilous pathways of life that we must sometimes traverse. He follows the Lord through the dark valleys, even the valleys where death is a real prospect at every turn. David has made the decision that following the Lord is better than following anything or anybody else.
In the dark valleys David fears no evil, though evil may be lurking everywhere. Just as sheep are comforted by the shepherd's staff, so David is comforted by the presence of the Lord. Come what may, he knows that it will work out well for him because the Lord can be relied upon to protect him. The Lord is the Good Shepherd who lays down His life for the sheep (John 10:11).
There is a very good shepherd available for following if you are willing. He will not lead you astray; He will not abandon you when evil comes around; He will always be there and He will always care.
