What are Khare's favourite dishes to prepare and why? Are there any dishes she would like to learn how to make?

Liking this post for a question ~

Khare's favourite dish to prepare is none other than the traditional fried breakfast! The American version of this meal is a little different from what she's used to back home, but it's so quick and easy to make that it's no big deal. Crispy bacon with sunny eggs? Pancakes with syrup and hash browns on the side? In they go, prepared how the customer likes though she often wishes she could add beans as a proper fried breakfast is supposed to have. She's picked up how to make a variety of meals since starting work at Pauli's Diner, many of them quick and easy so currently there aren't any dishes she'd like to learn ASAP unless it's a special request or for somebody she really cares about. Unfortunately her diet has become somewhat limited since her physiology mutated, leaving her unable to enjoy things she once used to.

What sort of equivalent dishes do the people of Tamriel enjoy, that are basically just dressed-up "kid food" dishes?

Altmer

In Summerset, young and old alike enjoy mochi, a tasty sweet snack made from chewy glutinous rice flour. Mochi comes in many varieties, with fillings like sweet peanut or black sesame paste. However, almost everyone's favourite is a cold mochi filled with soft gelato of various flavours. My favourite combination is matcha mochi wrapped around a moreish azuki bean ice cream centre.

Argonians

Is there anything that makes you feel more like a kid than some snacking? Argonians are huge fans of anything that packs a crunch, both sweet and savoury. Whether it's spicy and sweet crickets, dark saltrice sauce-coated mealworms, or just good old prawn crackers with some dipping sambal, be prepared to snack your way all day long in Black Marsh.

Bosmer

If you're one of those people who stands in the kitchen gnawing a block of cheese at midnight, you're in good company in Valenwood. A popular late-night treat served at street food vendors across the Province is a simple cup of grilled witchetty grubs slathered in timber mammoth cheese sauce and topped with pulled pork. The grubs are meaty in flavour, and the pungent timber mammoth cheese complements the pulled pork when mixed all together, as the locals enjoy it.

Bretons

Pain au chocolat? Yes please! These deliciously buttery puffed pastries are essentially rectangular croissants enveloping delicious dark chocolate. Served warm, they're sure to make any breakfast or teatime a happy one! To really satisfy those chocolate cravings, pair with a classic Breton hot chocolate, complete with marshmallows and whipped cream.

Dunmer

Marshmerrow cake is the ubiquitous Dunmeri dessert that has gained popularity far beyond the borders of Morrowind due to its mild flavour and unique candy aroma. A soft sponge cake, which is sometimes soaked in comberry brandy, is layered with sweet marshmerrow crème patissiere, caramelised marshmerrow crumble, and maraschino comberries. Sure to knock some years off your age and put a couple more holes in your belt (it's impossible to stop at one slice. Source: me).

Imperials

There's nothing quite like homemade gnocchi with ragout for Imperials when it comes to comfort food. While this homey dish is prevalent across Cyrodiil, every household cooks the dish differently. In mine, my mother pan-fries the gnocchi in an obnoxious amount of butter, and tops it with her top-secret slow-cooked lamb and red wine ragout. While I cannot give away the secrets to her ragout, I highly recommend trying this delicious dish a try when you need to warm yourself, body and soul.

Khajiit

If you think you can turn away cinnamon and cardamom churros with a cup of moon sugar caramel dip, you're deluding yourself. This delicious treat can be found across Elsweyr and is considered one of the Province's most famous foods. Khajiiti churros, which are made from a mix of rice and tapioca flour, have a moist and chewy texture beneath a crisp, golden brown outer layer. They're served hot from the wok, with a cup of moon sugar caramel syrup. A truly divine pairing!

Nords

Spätzle is something I've written about in the past, and it's one of the best things I know (ask any resident of Skyrim and they'd tell you the same). These chunky egg noodles may look unrefined compared to Khajiiti vermicelli, but make up for it when liberally doused in a creamy cheese sauce and topped with fried onions. I like spicing mine up, quite literally, with some chili powder I purchased at a Sentinel bazaar.

Orcs

Nothing screams comfort food (and mess) quite like a good old echatere sausage hot dog. The echatere sausage, rather akin to Blackwood chorizo in flavour, is grilled over hot coals and served in a sourdough bun, served Wrothgar style with a good amount of horseradish mayo, fried radish chips, caramelised onions, pickles, and crispy dried baby shrimp topping. I'd say you can't stop at just one, but it's a hefty meal you can eat with one hand!

Redguards

I have probably written about gulab jamun in the past, a delicious, albeit cloying dessert popular throughout Hammerfell. An iconic dish at festivals and parties, gulab jamun is prized by dessert-lovers for its velvety, syrupy texture. These fluffy balls of cardamom-scented cottage cheese are fried and soaked in a fragrant saffron and rose water syrup, and topped with crushed pistachios. So simple, so good, and so moreish. Just be sure to stop at three, because any more and the sugar rush will send you to Aetherius!

jason - he bites ice cream (this thought came first and then i struggled with the flavour for AGES.) …i’ve come to the conclusion that he just… doesn’t. like ice cream. it’s so not him. for a while the only thing i could conjure was ‘red’, so raspberry ice blocks it is?? i think it’s stimulating for him to chew on ice. ice blocks. raspberry ice blocks.

piper - vegetarian! she likes peach ice blocks though (she thinks it’s a hassle to read the ingredients all the time. SIDE NOTE hi-chews are not vegetarian and are no longer her favorite food. sorry everybody!)

leo - big cookie dough man. he teamed with percy one time to use sally's cookie dough, and they had a blast. does anyone think we were totally robbed of their friendship because i think we were totally robbed of their friendship

hazel - boysenberry or peanut butter… she totally gets two scoops because most days she really can’t choose.

frank - lactose intolerance? stopping him? incorrect. he likes chocolate vanilla swirl, because he thinks regular chocolate is over powering. he’s a savoury palette guy, not sweet.

i think it's always fun to ask! what's in auva's fridge? or more specially what foods are in the HoL fridge that have their name on it haha

Auva is a bit of a foodie, but also has some sensory issues. Hates certain textures SO much. Won’t touch mushrooms, pickles, big chunks of onions, etc etc that sort of thing. So she’s vigilant about guarding HER food lol. She’ll share if someone asks, but will be very upset if food is stolen from her.

Of Devildom food, she has a favourite in common with Belphie. Not the quetzacoatlus brain, the sushi. She likes it exactly like he does: assorted, family size, no wasabi.

She has her sourdough starter in the fridge, and NO one is allowed to touch it, except Luke and Barbatos if they’re around. They can be trusted. In terms of actual food, she always makes sure to have a supply of her human world favourites. A block of low moisture mozzarella, a truly absurd amount of strawberry yogurt, this one specific brand of jam that’s made in her home region (the strawberry, blueberry, or peach! No substitutions!), etc etc. She’ll be very disappointed if she can’t get bread flour, chicken, eggs, whole milk, potatoes, the One Specific cereal she likes, cheesy crackers, peanut butter, that sort of thing.

She always has to have some sort of fruit available. Apples, green or a couple specific red varieties. Oranges. Blueberries, mangoes, strawberries. Even tomatoes and cucumbers count for her snacking purposes. Though she insists on having tajin with the cucumbers. It’s the best way!

She’s gotta have a specific collection of aromatics to make this blended green seasoning that goes in just about every savoury dish she makes. That lives right next to her sourdough starter. She likes to cook, but she’s a baker at heart. So she’s got shortcuts and speedrun strats for cooking.

She’s gotta have her familiar spices! The green seasoning, this one Caribbean seasoning mix, garlic powder, kosher salt (she Knows if someone puts table salt in one of her recipes instead. She won’t say anything, won’t really mind, but she Knows), chili powder, etc etc.

Also, she has a habit of processing her staple vegetables immediately upon getting home from the grocery store, portioning them off and freezing them. Because she is LAZY. Energy efficient, she maintains. So she always has her bags of green onions, spinach, cubed potatoes, chopped broccoli, etc etc. So she can cook faster! If anyone finishes up those freezer bags without telling her, she will be so sad.

(I’m sure you can tell that I’m a baker/foodie/cooking nerd from this lmao) (also that I have ADHD and have minmaxed my cooking skills to dodge the executive dysfunction as much as possible lol)

What's your favorite "weird" food? I'm watching a documentary about Anthony Bourdain (MHMBAB) and I was thinking the way you speak/explain things is really similar in like. Casual eloquence if that makes sense? So what's some weird stuff you've eaten that actually isn't that weird?

I don't think I'm anywhere on the level of Bourdain but I'm very flattered by the comparison, haha.

The only things I can think of that are "weird" by the standards of, idk, North American white people, is like... tripe, I guess. I had intestines in pho once and it was delicious. Really nice texture. Not much taste on its own but it soaked up the taste of the broth really nicely.

I got to suck the heads (LOL) on shrimp once and it was real good. I feel like a lot of times when you get shrimp around where I live they've taken the heads off already, but the innards there have really good taste. This was years ago so I don't really remember what it was like, other than "savoury" and "I liked it". Apparently you can eat the whole damn head if you fry it real good? I wanna try that at some point. I've heard crab innards are also really damn good but I've only ever had crab in the form of crab cakes before.

One time when I was a kid an uncle told me to try raw white onion and peanut butter on a cracker. It's very weird and it's not for everyone. I liked it though. I haven't had it in years & I don't know if I'd still like it. But I liked it when I was, uh, six? Maybe seven.

There's lots of food out in the world and I want to try more of it.

yeah, vocaloid tumblr is going to war while we're just kinda watching from the sidelines like we're the fucking z fighters

i don't really want to pick a side but i'm also leaning slightly towards the vocaloid supporters

my own vocal chords are medically ruined - my voice can't go above a certain pitch without just cutting out, and raising my voice puts a massive strain on them, so i can't yell either

so i think for that reason the argument that vocaloid software is used by people who aren't able to sing resonates with me, because i'll also never be able to do it

anyway, back to the real discourse -

i did have a look, turns out i didn't have any peanut butter - or swiss cheese

though just trying to imagine the combination of flavours in my head and how they would work together, i think maybe it could be good? though swiss cheese isn't very sharp, and neither is peanut butter, but mixing cheese and something more savoury might not be the worst thing?

on the other hand, at first i thought maybe the cheese would overpower the peanut butter, but now i feel like it might be the other way around, so i'm not sure if it would balance that well

First off - thank you so much ;u; your kind words really mean a lot!! 💖 Secondly, my goodness you were right this was such a fun ask to write for - it really got me stuck in and thinking about how different the characters eating habits are. I’ve only listed No.1 through 12 plus Diesel as I feel I haven’t had the chance to flesh out a lot of other characters as of yet 🙏

Thomas: A human hoover, will consume pretty much anything put on a plate in front of him. Has given himself food poisoning from his own cooking on multiple occasions, probably from the medium-rare chicken he specialises in. Not a big fan of tea.

Edward: Has a strong sweet tooth. His lunchbox probably contains more dessert than dinner. Snacks on some of those little wrapped hard-boiled sweets he keeps in his breast pocket - which he’ll sometimes give out to Bill and Ben if they actually behave.

Henry: Henry still struggles to maintain a healthy relationship with food after his time being so unwell and may need a gentle reminder to have something to eat during the day. Sometimes makes mac and cheese at 3am. Probably one of the few to admit that they enjoy fish. Is also allergic to peanuts. 

Gordon: Big lover of meats and protein. Typically has around 12 toppings on his sandwiches. Willingly starts arguments over which is the superior flavour of crisps - favours salt & vinegar. Probably the marmite enthusiast of the Tidmouth lot. 

James: Claims he can handle spicy foods but absolutely cannot. Tuna sandwiches are his guilty pleasure that not a single soul must ever learn about. Keeps a pack of polo mints on hand to hide the fish smell from his breath.

Percy: A coffee addict, prefers bitter tasting things. Not a fan of sweet foods at all such as chocolate, jam, honey etc. Lactose intolerant but that doesn’t usually stop him from enjoying pizza night with Thomas. 

Toby: Strikes me as the type of person who will eat the same meal for tea every single day for several weeks. He always insists on helping Henrietta cook in the kitchen. (Bonus I found this video shortly after writing that and it is absolutely them)

Duck: Dislikes eggs. Goes full-on with the roast dinners every Sunday, usually makes enough to feed the entire Little Western fleet and then some. Makes the best yorkshire puds.

Donald & Douglas: One prefers savoury, the other prefers sweet. People often have a hard time remembering who prefers which. Both are hearty drinkers and can pretty much always be found in the pub after work.

Oliver: Would probably eat around 10 packets of noodles in a day if given the chance.

Emily: The only one who seems to remotely care about her physical health and what sort of food she consumes. Mostly sticks to a plant based diet. Big lover of tea. Also Irn Bru - she has a secret stash of the stuff.

Diesel: Likes fast food or anything greasy. Not a fruit or veggie lover. Has probably deprived his body of water for some time. Similar to Henry, will make cheese on toast at around 3am for no reason other than he wanted cheese on toast.

when ppl slide into my asks with random headcanons. honestly to date i've never met a random f1 rpf headcanon that i didn't like

hot drink inside on a rainy cold day - i live in the tropics (and am currently out of the country) so once in a while this feeling is novel rather than annoying

peanut sauce and mayo with fries which @nyoomfruits was talking about and honestly this is very intriguing to me. i see the vision

chili sauce!! love that shit!! the fifth flavour to me (if you think salt/savoury, sweet, bitter, sour...). i grew up eating southern chinese food, which as a general rule is not really spicy, and since moving to SEA i've become the person that now feels they need to put chili sauce on everything.

all the amazing fics i get to read and artwork on here that also inspires me... and i get to read and see it FOR FREE. crazy!

wonderful question my anonymous friend- apologies for the delay, please enjoy post 🤲:

Paani’s patties have nuts, seeds, and bugs in them, which all have kind of similar tastes—hear me out—they all taste nutty (yes, bugs have a nutty flavour, if you didn’t know), and possibly a little roasty or smokey depending on how they’re prepared. Paani’s safe foods probably consist of a lot of other grains, nuts, or butters (peanut butter, sunflower butter, almond/cashew butter, etc). He probably unironically enjoys pistachio ice cream. Can’t go wrong with a giant jug of straight up rainwater, either.

Tracker grew up the same way Barnacles did: In the Arctic with very little variety. So, their tastes are probably the same, or very similar. He enjoys simple flavours, and dishes with non-complicated seasoning. I also imagine he’s an extremely picky eater, despite being taught in the Polar Scouts to be prepared to “eat what you have to” in an emergency. He might like a couple obscure or odd things here and there, but other than that his palate is pretty limited. He likes knowing what to expect when he eats something (and in general), so he basically just eats the same foods over and over. He’s an EXPERT at cooking these foods.

Googled native Russian and Siberian cuisines for Natquik, and I’m seeing a lot of dough, pastry, soup, and salt (and a lot of other things, but they’re mostly meat and I’m going to pretend he’s vegetarian and so is everyone else, with the exceptions of Mr. Paani “The Bug Eater”, and Ms. Pearl “Eats Living Urchins Whole”). He loves savoury foods, as well as “earthy” flavours (below-ground vegetables, such as beets, potatoes, carrots (he might bond with Tweak over that one), or mushrooms) but can NOT tolerate spiciness at all; he’s worse than Barnacles in this regard. If he eats something too hot he will spit it out instantly, and be very dramatic about it. He also enjoys a cup of tea now and then, and he’s not picky about what kind; if it’s warm and got leaves in it, he’ll drink it.

I like to think that Calico Jack and Kwazii are alike in more ways than one thousand—and they probably have IDENTICAL tastes/safe foods. So, Jack loves sweets and sugars, but hates bitters. He hates citrus too (because he’s a cat), but has learned to tolerate it in all his years as a pirate. He chugs lemon juice like it’s milk, and he just ate a whole ghost pepper. You won’t catch him anywhere near a tangerine, though. (Disclaimer: Citrus is actually poisonous to cats in real life, which is why they hate it so much. This cat however, is fictional, and just thinks they’re icky.) CJ also canonically loves to cook and bake his own food, based on how many recipes he invented and passed down to Kwazii; such as pirate pie (real pie, see GBR for ingredients), pirate stew (main ingredient = kelp), and “pirate pie” (kelp and lima beans on toast), to name a few.

Ranger Marsh LOVES the Octonauts’ hot cocoa specifically, I don’t know if it’s the way the Vegimals make it, or what, but I’m taking this to mean the man is fan of chocolate. Dark chocolate. Meaning, he probably enjoys bitter things. Do not let him cook for Kwazii or Jack. I bet most of what he eats is foraged directly out of the Everglades’ thicket, so that would likely include weird and bitter berries, plants, and wild vegetables. I also headcanon that he taught Tweak how to make her famous chili, she just perfected it. Chili can taste like pretty much anything depending on how you season it, so you can bet he likes his extra bitter as well.

Okay now Pearl is probably the opposite of Shellington. I said that Shellington would enjoy intense or odd flavours (like extra hot sauce on cake), but dislike salty-anything because it reminds him of red urchin. He learned to like strange foods, as a result of being allergic to his species’ main source of nourishment (shellfish). Since Pearl didn’t have this problem, she didn’t need to branch out her plate; and thus would love salty things because it’s what she’s used to. She might dislike overly sour or sweet things, or generally “unnatural” or artificial foods. She’s probably not much of a chef, considering most of what she eats is stuff she literally picks off the seafloor.

Apparently a red panda’s diet is 95% bamboo, soooooooooooooooo... I guess that answers Min. She probably eats a ton of those bamboo biscuits, and that might literally be all. Bamboo tastes earthy, nutty, and slightly sweet, so if she were to expand her menu, she’d probably eat foods with similar tastes, or anything that has a good crunch to it. Y’know what? I bet she’d love a Paani Patty.

Ryla literally ate bat droppings covered in moss. Granted, the “droppings” were berries, but still. I don’t think she’s very picky. She doesn’t have any “safe foods”, because she’s a hardcore survivalist—she’ll eat ANYTHING (unless it’s poisonous then she’ll only eat it once). Wombats are strict herbivores, so she probably enjoys a good salad when she's not fighting for her life in a cave.

I think Koshi and Pinto are both stereotypical kids, who'll gladly inhale anything with sugar in it. Pinto specifically might have similar tastes to Peso, in which he'll also just eat... literally anything. Especially if it's weird looking. Koshi is a bit more sensitive to strong smells, so she'll only eat what she likes the smell of. She doesn't seem like someone who likes trying new foods, either. She likes sweet, or bland simple tastes.

🍄 What are your OCs favourite snacks? Their favourite comfort food which always cheers them up when they’re down? Favourite meal to make? Do they enjoy baking and cooking and are they any good in the kitchen?

Aisling: She's a sweet tooth. Her ultimate favourite thing is lemon custard cake, or anything with citruses. Or anything sweet with a memory linked to it. Embrium buds (sweet as per my headcanon) because she and her big brother ate them together, cookies because she... Well, Sera bakes them and she helps her cooking. Nectarines are her favourites too, she says they "taste like home" because she always ate them with her clan. She is a bad cook, can cook a couple of very basic things that will keep herself and others alive, but only on a campfire, and it's not anything you'll remember. Put her in front of a stove, leave her unsupervised and she'll either set the kitchen on fire, make the oven explode because "stuff wasn't cooking so I got impatiens and helped it with magic". Invent a Rage Demon to blame for her lack of talent.

Raina: Cotton candy because Malcolm used to buy it to her at festivals, to cheer her up when she was sad, and just to make her smile. She gets emotional for cotton candy. She loves Orana's cooking, and particularly how she makes tomatoes and her bruschette. Orana always makes one bruschetta more, and that's always for Raina because it's her favourite. She maybe could learn to cook, but has not the patience for it. She can cook only ONE thing and that's the "Grand Hawke Stew". Which was Malcolm's idea to convince Leandra that they won't starve after they ran away and stayed a family tradition. It's basically a soup made from "whatever is in the pantry at that moment, pour everything inside". Raina somehow always manages to make it taste nicely. Even if you see her pouring a whole jar of peanut butter inside. She really has no patience for anything else, maybe she can grill, but baking? Nope, she's terrible.

Alyra: Halla cheese. It's not something you find in human settlements, she's not so sentimental but she misses that and makes her feel good. She has a soft spot for Alistair's prized grey lamb soup. She is a soup girl. Something warm and earthy, full of herbs, and she'll settle down with a smile. It reminds her of home, it reminds her of the Blight and of meals shared with her friends. Soup is nice, soup is a warm hug. She is the best cook of the three, she'll tackle cooking as she tackles everything else in her life: methodically and with a purpose. She'll get a recipe and follow it, add some spices of her own, measure timings precisely. She'll get you nourished and she'll get you happy with what she serves you. She'll be better at cooking than at baking, but purely because she strongly prefer savoury dishes to desserts.

💦 If you as the writer could erase one traumatic event from this OC’s life what would it be and why?

Raina: In canon I saved both twins. It's not that I don't like starting it with a death, it's just... I saw Leandra blaming Hawke and that was a little unsettling for me. Again, Raina is the blorbo I accidentally poured too much of me into (except I can cook and I can bake and am still learning knitting) and... Again, see Aisling, I'm ok with the drama, but there's a couple of things that... Are too much. That thing is something I'm deeply uncomfortable with and I think she would have come crushing down way before the ending of Act 2 with that on her shoulders as well.

Alyra: So, this is basically me not thinking through things when choosing dialogue options, LOL. But basically: Alyra facing the Landsmeet and saying that oh no I'll be the Queen, Alistar we can marry. In front of everyone. And Alistair needing to remind her that eh. You know. Wrong ear shape. That's... Not something I would have personally dismissed so easily as a writer, necessarily (maybe keep the option open to work through it... I'm speaking of years of machinations to make it plausible for everyone, and only available as an options on certain conditions, but still.). And realising it wouldn't have been a feasible option... That is basically Alyra's core fear condensed into one wrong dialogue choice, I kept it out of trust to my game but eh. I don't think she would have done it and in that shitshow that is the breakup with Alistair if you make him king and aren't a Cousland... That is the one thing I'd spare her, LOL. (Instead I'm evil and we keep it.)

Sweet/Spicy/Savoury?: I crave food regardless of sugar content honestly, like sweet or savory, it doesn't matter, but I'm not the biggest spicy food person. If it's like a flavour, then I'm okay with a bit of spice, like I like Indian spicy food, but when the only point is to cause pain, I mean, I've already got so much in my life that hurts me, my food doesn't need to be part of that.

Relationship Status: Not Applicable (but I have some very fulfilling and deep platonic relationships)

Last Thing I Googled: I googled "ixnay" to see the definition because like I knew it was pig latin for "nix" but like who the heck uses "nix" in everyday conversation anyways, like why do so many movies have people say "ixnay" lol, and apparently it's like the only pig latin phrase that's ever caught on in everyday speech, which is super interesting
