The choreography, developed with an intimacy coordinator, needed to be balanced with spontaneity: listening to each other, being present in the moment. Of shooting these sequences with Mescal, Scott admits, “It was a bit scary at the beginning. Then you get more used to it—and he’s great fun. The good thing about working with somebody that you love is that the process is really enjoyable.” The changing dynamic between their characters presented its own challenge. “How do you portray nervousness? How do you portray lust? That’s a really interesting one, and Paul and I’s chemistry in real life is actually kind of irrelevant,” Scott says. “I was playing a very, very lonely, quite repressed character, which I don’t feel in my own life—and that’s a great challenge. It’s wonderful because it speaks to me of empathy, and that’s what our jobs are.”

nora: andrew and neil don't do this because it's not something they're comfortable doing. this is not something that bothers them, they have no desire to do this thing. here is three books to show how in character this lack of desire is for both of them.
half the aftg fandom: here is a whole bunch of fanart and fics of andrew and neil doing those things because it's cute and if they don't their relationship is toxic. nora doesn't know the characters like i do

I never noticed Andrew was holding back a smile when Kevin switched to his left hand during night practice.
And this solidifies Andrew's mouth twitching when he's suppressing a smile, I thought it was just a lil fandom thing but he Actually Does That... ☹️

Andrew Minyard retires his armbands on a random Tuesday one night twenty years after sophomore year of college.
He had put his knives down a long time ago but kept the bands as one last defense. He was looking around his living room, tv volume on low playing some old exy game, couch cluttered with mismatched blankets and pillows, walls covered in pictures of everyone he bothered to care about, mostly empty cups on the coffee table, and the sounds of laughter echoing from the kitchen where his family, friends, and the love of his life had all congregated sometime ten minutes ago…
And isn’t that funny? Andrew never thought he would admit to falling in love, to caring about others. But here he is.
He walks over to the kitchen, leaning on the wall of the entrance. He hears Neil say something stupid (as he usually does) and locks eyes with his twin, them rolling their eyes simultaneously. That’s something he didn’t think he’d get to have either; a real and healthy relationship with Aaron.
Maybe time really does heal after all.
He feels himself smile- something he has done more and more as the years fly by- and realizes that he no longer hided behind walls, hasn’t for a very long time.
He slips off his armbands for the last time, placing them on the counter and moving over to Neil, wrapping his arms around his waist. Neil leans back into him.
Later, once everyone has gone back to their hotels or crashed in their guest bedrooms, Andrew will walk to his and Neil’s room and pull out the shoebox with his blades from the top of the closet, and Neil will walk in with Andrew’s armbands in hand, and they will fold them nicely and place them in the box, closing it and putting it back up again. Neil will smile, and Andrew will smile right back, and they will go to bed with nobody at the wall because their bed was in the middle of the room, and they will be safe.
They have been safe for a very long time.

i feel like aftg is the only fandom that genuinely never wants the author to return bc we're all terrified she'll say some bs that'll technically have to be canon but none of us agree

Andrew is absolutely obsessed with Neil's "butcher" smile. Neil hates it obviously, but Andrew thinks it encompesses everything Andrew likes about Neil. It shows just how dangerous Neil could be, and that makes Andrew feel safe in his own way.
