Size differences

Hattercrow is a fun one for size difference Jon is usually lanky and enormous with the exception of BTAS, where he's short and Jervis is built like a brick shithouse.

Nothing quite as entertaining as old men with terrible posture. I'm partial to both versions, but I tend to make Jervis shorter when I draw them.

Okay so I'm usually weird about publishing asks/compliments because idk self-worth issues, reasons I should probably go back to therapy, blah blah blah.

But I happened to open tumblr earlier to see your tags on some of my things and then this message when I dragged myself out of bed at like 6pm because I'm doing very well at the moment, lmao.

Hiiiii ^_^ Since I love your Kirk headcanons so so much, I wanted to hear your thoughts on something that I've been thinking about for a long time: just how intelligent is Kirk in Man-Bat form? The original 70s Kirk retained his full human intelligence as Man-Bat, but 2004 Kirk is clearly different in this regard. He's clearly much more animal.

Thanks pal ^v^ Consider it my revenge for your fun headcanons about Crane and Jerry.

To start off, I don't think Kirk knew how much of his mental faculties would remain when he transformed, and that played a role in how he made the serum. He went with vampire bat DNA as a base in part because they have very good memory and temperature sense. The transformation throws his senses out of whack, making his hearing more sensitive and giving him better night vision. He grew heat receptors on his nose in addition to the wings, which allow him to track other creatures by their body temperature.

In addition, his body is easily twice its normal size due to the wings, which means his body is working overtime to find or produce more blood, which means less is getting to his brain. His body is basically ignoring whatever systems or signals don't need immediate attention in order to maintain its form. When he is Man-Bat, everything is kind of disorienting, but he also gets to shut off part of his brain for a while because it's easier on his body. It's like running software on an outdated computer; his memories, intellect, etc are all there, but he can't access them with the equipment he has at the moment. He could technically create a way around it, but letting go of that stuff is part of the appeal.

All that aside, Kirk definitely has less of his usual intelligence when he's Man-Bat. Everything is still technically there, but it's kinda disjointed. His problem solving skills aren't as good, and he can't read expressions or body language well. Once he's been transformed for longer periods—and his body has been able to adjust—he may be able to communicate a little and use tools, though not as well as he can in human form. He would need to tweak the serum a lot to get past that point.
