So I rewatched Barbie as the Princess and the Pauper and it never properly hit me how down bad Dominick was for Erika till now.
Boy was 100% going to break Erika out of prison (in another kingdom) during Premiger's wedding, when no one else would be paying attention to anything else. Like, dude, you are going to start a war over this girl!!! An innocent victim yes, but she was still suspected of having involvement in Anneliese's death and he was so in love that he was just ready to take her away and most likely protect her from Premiger.
King Dominick I didn't respect you enough when I was a child and I should have.

I know a bunch of people are coming to know Barbie (2023) but shoutout to all the animated Barbie movies that are super duper gay. The Princess and The Pauper, Barbie Rapunzel, newer ones like Barbie Space Adventure, etc etc. If you haven't seen them, try it out.
But understand that some of it, especially the earlier ones, have some antisemitic tropes with it's villains (especially Barbie Swan Lake).
But regardless, experience Barbie culture. Like with Barbie Magic Pegasus, Barbie The Three Musketeers, Barbie Diamond Castle, Barbie and the 12 Dancing Princesses. Experience Barbie culture!! (It's pretty gay!)

My favorite part of barbie movies is the moment barbie is presented with a clear way out, an option that lets her avoid the plot with little negative impact on her own life and instead she chooses to stay and make whatever difference she can. The most obvious to me as a kid was in Mermaid Tale when she refuses her wish from the dreamfish and accepts responsibility as a princess. She could easily walk away and live her life as a human, but makes the choice to care about the merpeople. In Princess and the Pauper, Erika doesn’t have to help Julian and pretend to be the princess, in fact her life would be much easier if she didn’t. But she accepts that responsibility and risks her life because of the connection she feels to this girl she barely knows. It’s not exclusive to barbie’s roles either. Aidan in Magic of Pegasus has no real stake in Annika’s quest, especially not at the start. But he hears a person talking about how they need a second chance and he chooses not to walk away. And this happens over and over again, in 12 Dancing Princesses, Diamond Castle, Three Musketeers
Often in children’s movies I feel like the plot is their life, like there’s no other option here they must deal with whatever is going on. And as a kid who felt like her life was very quiet, it meant a lot to me to watch characters choose the harder path for the sake of helping others, make a decision to care about someone else’s problems, and live out their own magical adventure because of that act of compassion.

The Barbie panel is over and… that was insane???
There were so many people, people were turned away because it was full, and the two people doing the presentation barley expected anyone to come lmao
They were so funny tho, and had done very impressive research, and the whole audience agreed on the gay subtext 😌
They really had the whole lecture hall chant «all hail Bibble» really loudly by the end, so that was… certainly something!
All in all, truly a religious experience

All other version of Ken would NEVER but of course this version of Ken would. Of COURSE he would because he’s been treated how little girls treat Ken, not how Barbie Brand treats Ken in the Barbie Animated Cinematic Universe/Barbie Life in the Dreamhouse. Barbie Brand treats Ken with the respect and love that he give back to Barbie + co. in spades meanwhile little girls are treating Ken like how they want to treat boys, playing out what they THINK should be happening (a romantic little aside between Barbie and Ken) but then tossing Ken away because they don’t ACTUALLY care about that sort of thing. And often girls will have this underpinning of resentment towards their Kens too, because they see men mistreating women everywhere around them in the home and in the street and in media and they might not actually understand it but they still are sensitive to it. That insecurity is the girl’s own insecurities reflected back, more so than it reflects back on any Barbie doll, because Ken is who she can marginalize just like she herself is being marginalized.
