Explanations/Opinions below the cut:
Ok so I have several reading lists/stacks that I rotate through: my to-read spreadsheet (which has almost 300 titles listed in chronological order by date added, with the oldest being from 8/22/2014), my to-read bookcase/nightstand (which holds ~50 books I’ve acquired over the past few years but haven’t yet read), a stack of oversized unreads that don’t fit on the nightstand shelves (this gets its own list bc I need to read them and find a permanent home for them before the stack gets too tall), and “interruptions” (books that override the list order bc I didn’t want to wait to read them, for whatever reason).
Maybe it’s weird that I’m so attached to reading things “in order”? Idk. I’ve always been like this. It’s only a mild compulsion – obviously, I am perfectly capable of ignoring what’s supposed to be next on the list, in favor of reading something that catches my interest more strongly in the moment, but in general, I like to read things either in the order I added them to the list, or the order I personally acquired a physical copy (if I went by the list only, I’d be drowning in unread books [yay, college town thrift stores], so I gotta stay on top of that pile pretty regularly). So that is why I am often reading things that I first became aware of/added to my list nearly 10 years ago. Sometimes this practice results in feelings like, “Dang, I wish I would’ve actually read this 10 years ago,” but also sometimes, “WOW, I’m so glad I’m reading this RIGHT NOW, as opposed to 10 years ago when I first heard about it!”
I think my favorites this year were Mariette in Ecstasy; Other Voices, Other Rooms; Crapalachia; and Speak, Memory.
Mild disappointments were the essay collections by Leslie Jamison and Meghan Daum, two authors I’m pretty sure I discovered via popular and relateable quotes reblogged on tumblr ca. 2014, but the collections taken as a whole just had too many moments of cringe – casual classism, arrogant self-absorption, and other annoying and unrelateable qualities typical of privileged 20-something writers (this tone definitely appealed to me when I was a naïve and melodramatic snotty 20-something, so there’s that).
As a kind of memorial, Rachael and I read David’s three favorite books: The Stars My Destination, Mother Night, and American Gods. In all the time I knew him, including all the times we used to sit on the porch together, reading quietly while he drank whiskey, I never thought to ask him his favorites. I kept looking for pieces of him in the stories, wondering what lines stood out, what made a book memorable, what did it say about him that these were his favorites.
Being an elder Millennial, I’m in the stage of nostalgically re-acquiring important artifacts from my childhood, so that’s why there are some children’s books on my list. Where’s Waldo? was one of the most coveted books in my grade-school library! There was always a list of people waiting to check it out, but usually, whoever actually had the book that week would let the other kids gather around and look together.
My Heart Is a Chainsaw was a recommendation from my goth teenaged birthdaughter <3 which I probably read too much personal symbolism into but maybe not!
I thought John Updike was overrated, lol.
Favorite photography book: W. Eugene Smith’s Dream Street. His pictures made me so homesick, and it was wild because he took them from 1955-1957 but they still really, REALLY, to me, looked like the Pittsburgh of my ‘80s/’90s memories (bc Pittsburgh doesn’t change, and also the “idea” or “brand” of Pittsburgh in the ‘80s/’90s was ofc consciously referencing its industrial working-class past). He took over 10,000 photos but was never able to “finish” the project to his intense, obsessive standards of perfection (I KNOW THAT FEEL) and felt it failed to capture the multifaceted essence of the city. WELL, not in my opinion at least!

Amazon Studios has announced that a live-action film adaptation of Kouta Hirano's Hellsing manga is in the works.
John Wick writer Derek Kolstad will write the script and produce along with Brian Kavanaugh-Jones and Fred Berger of Automatik, Mike Callaghan and Reuben Liber of Ranger 7 Films, Jason Lust of Soluble Fish Productions. Gemma Levinson is the executive on the project from Automatik. Executive Producers are Tetsu Fujimura of Filosophia, India Osborne, Pierre Buffin, and Jason Speer.
“Ever since my brother introduced me to the Hellsing manga and anime some years ago, I’ve been obsessed with adapting it. And when Mike Callaghan and his team managed to secure the rights to then partner us up with Brian Kavanaugh-Jones and Amazon, I mean -damn, dude- this is a dream.
I’ve always loved the vampire genre, especially when a creator is able to put their own unique spin on it, so when Derek introduced me to Alucard and the Hellsing Organization, I knew we had something special in that tradition.
Kouta Hirano’s gonzo reimagining of the Dracula-Van Helsing mythology is an exhilarating, quirky mashup of action and horror that’s unlike anything we’ve seen before. Live-Action “Hellsing” in the Works
Derek Kolstad and Amazon Studios are developing a live-action film based on Kouta Hirano’s Hellsing. The film will be produced by Kolstad, Automatik’s Brian Kavanaugh-Jones and Fred Berger, Ranger 7 Films’ Mike Callaghan and Reuben Liber, and Soluble Fish Productions’ Jason Lust. Executive producers include Gemma Levinson, Tetsu Fujimura, India Osborne, Pierre Buffin, and Jason Speer.
Hellsing reimages Dracula as Alucard, a vampire bound to the Hellsing Organization led by Integra Hellsing. The Hellsing Organization protects England from supernatural threats such as other vampires and ghouls. Seras Victoria is a new recruit, an ex-police officer recently turned vampire by Alucard.

Nel progetto è coinvolto Derek Kolstad, sceneggiatore della trilogia di John Wick.
Arriva a sorpresa la notizia che Amazon Studios sarebbe attualmente al lavoro su di un film live action basato sul manga “Hellsing” di Kohta Hirano. La fonte è il sito web Deadline che, inoltre, riporta come sceneggiatore e produttore Derek Kolstad (John Wick, Nobody, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier).
Fra i produttori coinvolti nel progetto figurano anche Brian Kavanaugh-Jones (Upgrade), Fred Berger (Honey Boy), Mike Callaghan (Circle), Reuben Liber (Extraction) e Jason Lust (Buena Vista Social Club: Adiós). Altri produttori esecutivi sono: Gemma Levinson (Deadpool), Tetsu Fujimura (Ghost in the Shell live action), India Osborne (The House That Jack Built), Pierre Buffin (Bill & Ted: Face the Music) e Jason Speer (Wakefield)
Creature oscure popolano la notte, divorando gli sfortunati umani che cadono nelle loro grinfie. A ergersi contro tali mostri è l'organizzazione Hellsing, comandata dall'erede dell'omonima dinastia: Integra Fairbrook Wingates Hellsing. La sua lotta contro i non-morti è condotta da un vasto esercito, ma la vera forza è in un'arma imprevedibile: si tratta di Alucard, vampiro in lotta contro la sua stessa specie. Con un nuovo aiutante, Seras Victoria, Alucard dovrà combattere i mostri e tutte le organizzazioni mistico-religiose che si oppongono alla Hellsing.
Il manga è stato serializzato in Giappone fra il 1997 e il 2008, concludendosi con il 10° volume; in Italia è edito da J-POP Manga.
Nel 2001 l’opera ha ispirato una serie animata di 13 episodi prodotta dallo studio Gonzo, che ripercorre la storia originale solo per quanto riguarda i primi volumetti, per poi distaccarsi nettamente da essa. Questa trasposizione è distribuita in Italia da Dynit ed è possibile trovarla sia in home video, che in streaming su VVVVID e Amazon Prime Video.
Un adattamento più fedele del fumetto è costituito dalla serie OVA di 10 episodi, della durata di 50 minuti ciascuno, prodotta fra il 2006 e il 2012, che ha coinvolto nel tempo gli studi Madhouse, Satelight, Graphinica, Asahi Production, Kelmadick e Marvy Jack. Anche questa è licenziata da Dynit ed è disponibile sia in home video, che in streaming su VVVVID, Amazon Prime Video e Netflix.

週明けからいよいよXingfoo&Royのツアーがスタートします！
メンバーも一部すでに東京入りしております。今回のツアーマーチャンは彼らのツアー費用に充当するために作りました。
これもツアーサポートの一環ですので、是非各会場で購入してください！
そして、翌週にも海外からの来日のサポートします。
Yuckのメンバーであるドイマリコさんのソロ名義アルバムのリリースパーティーをRhyming Slangでお手伝いさせていただく事になりました！
マリコさんのバンドサポートをしているLuby SparksのNatsukiくんからお話をもらって、一緒にラインナップを考えた企画です。
先月にもYuckのライブを観たのですが、はっぴぃえんどのカバーをマリコさんが歌っていたりしてYuckにおけるマリコさんの存在はすごく大きいなぁとひしひしと感じました。
実はすごく昔にマリコさんがやっていたLEVELOADというバンドでご一緒させていただいた事があって、気さくでカッコいい女性で本当にロンドンで生れ育ったんじゃないだろうかというナチュラルに海外の空気感をまとった人です。
ソロのアルバムの方は実は今年の7月にリリースしていて、マリコさんが帰国するタイミングでやっとリリパを開催するという運びになったレーベルもバンドメンバーもそしてYuckファンの皆様にも待望のリリースパーティーとなります。
アルバムは、海外女性SSWの柔らかいサウンドとジャパニーズサイケが融合したような独特の浮遊感ある全8曲からなる構成。
会場では、CDの販売もありますので是非お手に取ってみてください！
今回はバンドセットでのライブなので、音源よりオルタナ感が増すのかなと。こちらもとても楽しみ！

DJには、Rhyming Slangのロゴやアートワーク全般をお願いしているMasatoo Hirano氏とTOKYO ACOUSIC SESSIONやインディーバンドのMVやアートワークを務めるYuta Sekiyama氏。
お二人とご一緒するのも久しぶりなのでこちらもとても楽しみです！
