After Telescope Peak, we checked out the kilns by Wildrose Peak. There's a nice trail up it, too, so we took it to the crisp, long views of the desert (and the Sierra Nevada). Coming down, we had an excursion and bumped into logs cut to 4 foot lengths waiting for a donkey or mule to take it down to those kilns where we started. They have been waiting over 150 years and will keep waiting until they disappear. From October 2014.

We have a wide variety of plants in our front "yard" here so I'm slowly acquainting myself with them. This, I thought, was a California wildrose, and I don't think it had been getting the water it needs, especially in this heat we've had. I started watering it a bit last week and this week there's some fresh looking green growth and a flower! It has more petals than the wildrose usually has, though, so it must be a different variety. We'll see if I can get it looking a little happier or not. A green thumb I have not and the front landscaping is supposed to be taken care of for us, but based on the way they trimmed the texas sage plants like hedges, I'm not sure the landscapers actually know that much about plants... that and most of them look equally sad! Except the one that's decidedly dead already. And the oleander next to the house that is simply loving its toxic life. There are SO many oleanders around here and we didn't get not one single warning about them. Once I identified it, I showed Carson and warned him not to pick any of the flowers for me. I do miss having vases of wildflowers in the house!
