your post about potatoes in fantasy worlds made me base my primary fantasy continent off sudamérica so i could use fantasy versions of andean and amazonian fauna/flora. I'm still trying to figure out how to change the geography enough to have the big desert i want in the right area(andes get an offshoot that encircles a rain shadow desert in the central north is the best idea i have) but actually being forced to consider how native wildlife works and needing to create trade routes if i wanted imported crops was fun. i was also trying to figure out why the southern hemisphere has more hot climates than the north and something said it's because the south on earth has less landmass so i think having the northern hemisphere above it be mostly tropical works if I have mostly archipelagos? also every time i see a european based fantasy have potatoes or tomatoes i shake my head and scowl.

The reason why the Southern Hemisphere seems to have more hot climates is indeed simply because the continental parts don't spread that far South to actually cold southern latitudes. The only place that really sticks that far south to have a truly cold climate is the Patagonia. And of course, Antarctica, which by coinicidence, basically surrounds the South Pole.

Here is a map of "temperate" latitudes, or rather, latitudes between the tropics and the polar circles (as someone who lives here, or indeed an Australian can tell you, many places there are not "temperate" at all but more on that below). What is important here is that the southern hemisphere has less places closer to the pole, except, again, Antarctica, while the northern hemisphere has lots of land near the poles. This is why we don't have our equivalents of say, Siberia, for example. The closest thing is again, Patagonia. Honestly an underused place for worldbuilding, with the steppe, the glaciers, the temperate rainforests, and the recently extinct megafauna, but I digress.

You could in fact have a tropical "north" if you keep most of the northern hemisphere's landmasses near the equator (here I'm picturing some kind of big Indonesia or Caribbean, an area where tectonic plates collide and there's lots of volcanic islands and lands), and you could place a big continent in the South to make it a cold South. Interesting reversal on the cold North/warm South of most settings.

This would bring some interesting effects, though. Placing a big landmass on any pole (not a small one like Antarctica) would lead to glaciation, as land is "colder" or rather less moderated by ocean (more on that later) and glaciers grow, and glaciers and arid land have greater albedo, reflectivity, that is, and so they reflect more sunlight, thus those place become colder, and the glaciers keep growing, and so on, until there is an ice-age. I don't have the link where I read it with me, but I recall that continents shifting to polar latitudes might have triggered ice-ages in Earth's past.

Deserts are very tricky to place. The standard worldbuilding recommendation is that the interior of the continents are drier as you get away from the sea, and that mountain chains and high terrain serves as rainshadows that stop rain from the sea. However, there is a lot more to it. A LOT more.

You can find deserts even next to oceans, in the so-called "horse latitudes", the meeting points of the Hadley Cells that circulate air from the Equator to the subtropics and beyond. The details are a bit technical, but what this means basically is that they create jet streams of circulating air at 30° South and North, keeping the climate sunny, warm and dry. This is indeed where many of the world's coastal deserts are: Atacama, Kalahari, and of course, Australia.

Meanwhile, in the equatorial zone, the "trade winds" (because they have regular wind patterns that have historical formed major sea trade routes, worldbuilding hint!) converge in the Equator, forming rainy areas... but not quite that simple.

The Intertropical Convergence Zone, where these winds meet, ocsilates during the year, creating monsoons, but as always, there are lots of factors involved. In particular, given our real life scenario of rapid climate change and global warming, a warmer temperature means more intense ocsilations. This makes monsoon events sharper (more droughts and floods in those regions) and more strong La Niña/El Niño events, which are their own thing, influenced by the Pacific which is a huge factor in global climate.

And this brings me to ocean currents. Usually, being close to the ocean moderates the climate, making it more rainy and warm, or at least stable. However, if the surrounding sea is cool, it means less evaporation and less rainfall, especially if it's influenced by cool polar currents (this is the case of eastern Patagonia, for example, with the cold Malvinas Current). The opposite is the case in, for example, Europe, where the warm gulf stream moderates climate, making it warmer and rainer compared to the same latitudes in the US and Canada. I'll admit I'm not very well informed on how ocean currents work, but the depth and salinity of the ocean have much to do with it. What basically happens is that dense salty water sinks and and this works as a "conveyor belt" for warm less dense surface water to flow over it and over great distances. These currents are slow, but since the ocean is so massive, they move extensive amounts of heat across the world. I will admit defeat here and just say I don't wholly understand how it works, but I can tell you this; if your world has a less salty ocean, your currents will be less strong, which means that the differences of temperature between the poles and the tropics will be sharper as there are no strong currents to overall moderate temperature. If this is all too complex for you as it is to me, the quick cheat is just looking at this map: warm water flows from the equator, and cold water flows from the poles, and they create "gyres" around the oceans and the Equator, and cold currents contribute to colder and drier climates (note the Canary, Benguela and Peru currents, the Malvinas current is not shown for some reason...)

Did I forget something? Oh, yes. A colder climate of course, means less rainfall, because there is less evaporation and there is much water "trapped" in glaciers and snow. Which seems to be the case during the last ice ages. Rainforests and forests in general retreated as deserts expanded. In fact, the few forests that remained served as refugiums for species that only expanded again once the ice age was over. Some especulate that this might meant a 'weakening' of megafauna, as they were trapped in those refuges with lots of interbreeding and weakened populations when humans arrived on the scene. Now, there are some contradictions here and there, some researchers have said that the climate wasn't that dry and while I'm not an expert I tend to agree, many parts that are "extreme desert" there might be scrubland instead. But overall, it seems that colder times bring drier times too.

I'm still not done, but I'm almost done! According to the Biotic Pump theory, forests might also influence the climate and rainfall in a big way, basically, evapotranspiration (plants sweat, a lot, 90% of water through a plant evaporates to the atmosphere) in forests might actually create by itself the rainy environment where forests thrive, so for example, the Amazon is a rainforest BECAUSE of the forest there. I think with the increasing droughts here in South America we're seeing that theory proven in practice, as deforestation of the Mata Atlantica, the Chaco and the Amazon is causing less rainfall in the centre of the continent. Forests and plants also have a cooling effect, since they fix carbon dioxide, and also a bit of a warming effect, since they have darker albedo and so absorb more sunlight. I'm going to be very lazy and instead of reading a thousand papers say that they overall have a "moderating" effect.

Well, I could go on and on but I think I've already written way too much, so I'll leave you this to munch on a bit. It might seem like a lot, but when in doubt, you can always "eyeball" it by comparing real regions of Earth, and it will help you to create more interesting world than the omnipresent "spring-summer-fall-winter" temperate standard in so many settings.

The tiger shark is a species of ground shark, and the only extant member of the genus Galeocerdo and family Galeocerdonidae. It is a highly nomadic species which inhabits tropical and subtropical waters world wide up to 3,000ft (900m) in depth, and is often found in coastal waters with particular abundance in the gulf of mexico, Caribbean sea, Indian ocean, and western pacific. Tiger sharks are often call the garbage cans of the sea and have reputation for eating almost anything. As such there diet is wide and heavily varied an is known to regularly include: small fish, jellyfish, crustaceans, cephalopods and other mollusks, rays, skates, sawfish, sea birds, sea snakes, sea turtles, other sharks, dolphins, seals, sea lions, dugongs, manatees, crocodilians, porpoises, and sick or injured whales. When near islands or coastlines they have been known to eat sheep, goats, dogs, pigs, rats, horses, deer, cattle, cats, camels, monkeys, inland birds, bats, lizards and  inedible objects, such as license plates, cans, tires, books, boat oars, soccerballs and baseball bats. Tiger sharks are themselves occasionally preyed upon by orcas, great whites, and saltwater crocodiles. The tiger shark commonly reaches 10.5-14ft (3.2 -4.26m) in length and 385- 1400lbs (175 – 635kg) in weight, with the largest recorded reaching 18ft (5.5m) long and 3360lbs (1525kg). This ranks the tiger shark amongst the largest extant sharks on earth only being surpassed by the whale, basking, great white, pacific sleeper, Greenland, and blunt nosed sixgill sharks. They have a broad snout and stocky body with proportionally large fins and a long upper tail. Tiger shark teeth are unique with very sharp, pronounced serrations and an unmistakable sideways-pointing tip. Such dentition has developed to slice through flesh, bone, and other tough substances such as turtle shells. In the northern hemisphere the mating season takes place from march to may and the southern hemisphere from November to January, with males breeding every year while females breed once every 3 years. After a year long pregnancy mother tiger sharks give birth to 10 to 80 pups. Under ideal conditions a tiger shark may live upwards of 12 years.

My original idea was to have them be traditional mermaids + ghoul kagune, but little by little my idea kept changing. Eventually I decided to assign different species to the four kagune types:

Rinkakus are octopus, squids, starfish, etc.

Ukaku are lionfish, pufferfish, flying fish, etc.

Koukaku are stingrays, manta rays, etc.

And Bikaku are sharks, whales, sea horses, etc.

Ok now that PJO season 1 is complete, here are my thoughts (spoilers for subsequent books):

As we book readers are aware, the content of the books, the stories told, and the events that occur all get increasingly darker and the themes become more mature as the characters grow up.

So I believe with each subsequent season that the runtimes should go longer AND the rating for the show gets progressively higher.

Right now it’s PG and averages like 33 minutes per episode.

Sea of Monsters could arguably remain PG but bump up to an average of like 40 minute episodes.

Titans Curse is where things get a little wild with Bianca and the junkyard, Zoe and her dad, HOLDING THE SKY. This one is where it gets a spicy PG-13 rating. Using Pirates of the Caribbean as reference for what can fall under a PG-13 rating, they certainly have a lot more wriggle room. And I would just love some 45 minute episodes AT LEAST to cover the mad amount of lore in this book.

OBVIOUSLY Battle of the Labyrinth has to be AT LEAST PG-13 if not M!! PERCY EXPLODES A VOLCANO!! We get some truly wild looking monsters in this book too. Lots of sinister underground business happens. Lots of red horse poop. 50 minute episodes AT LEAST.

And it only makes sense to bump up The Last Olympian to a PG-13 or M rating. At this point it’s been… idk 10 years since the show started??? Surely the kids who are still watching it are grown up enough to handle the M rating on this show to have a good and meaty story of at least hour long episodes. Sooo much happens in that last book!

Anyway even if we don’t get an M rating, you can actually do so much with a PG-13 rating (again going by Pirates of the Caribbean and the two sequels as my point of comparison) and it would be a waste not to take advantage of it!!

But my main plea is BY GOD let us have longer episodes. 45 minutes at least. Give us something to sink our teeth into. Don’t rush through it. Let the story percolate a little.

Short summary : In order to escape from the Pinkertons, Dutch decided to move states, making you travel to Southern Florida, on Islamorada.

A/note : Let’s just say this takes place in an AU where the gang randomly heads to Florida in mid Chapter 3 !

Your journey through Lemoyne had not been that endless, this was what you thought. Dutch had plans on moving further east, somewhere close to the Caribbean sea. The further they would go, the better. Even Hosea agreed with this decision, they would not be found this far. This "trip" from Lemoyne to Florida had lasted for more than a month, but it was worth it. You had loved every minute of it, gazing at landscapes from your horse or from the trailer, tightly wrapped in a blanket Arthur had offered you back in Blackwater. You loved the smooth transition from the bayous to the subtropical forests of Alabama, everything felt magical. 

The gang did not head to Southern Florida by the shores. You could feel Florida’s warm weather each time you would let your head pass between the trailer's flaps. The girls were excited to see the beach, so were you. You had never seen the sea before, only on pictures and paintings. It made you daydream about the colour of water, about the creatures inhabiting the greatest seas around the world. You would ask Arthur about what the sea looked like, and he would keep smiling at your excitement. 

"It’s just some water." he often said. "But it moves faster." 

Years ago, Hosea and Dutch had brought Arthur to the Pacific Ocean to show him how beautiful it was. Arthur could easily remember how excited he was, and how he had decided to run in the water after taking his boots off, dragging a fifteen year-old John in the process. Poor boy nearly drowned while Arthur was having the best time of his life, jumping between waves with the brightest laugh both Hosea and Dutch could remember. He was excited to see your reaction when you would finally gaze at the sea !

The gang settled near a few smalls towns, robbing banks before moving further south. At some point, upon reaching the southern part of Florida by night, Dutch robbed a ferryboat to allow you to leave the continent. By the time you climbed on the boat, you were asleep, unfortunately. Arthur carried you against him, wrapped in a blanket, while Hosea did the same to Miss Tilly. Poor girl was as excited as you were, the two of you had fallen asleep long before sunset, unable to keep up after spending endless days gazing at the landscape.

Arthur did not let go of you for the entire duration of the trip through the waves of the Caribbean sea, he even fell asleep at the some point, holding you against him on a sailor’s bed. You did not have much time to watch him asleep as lights were turned off in the cabin the two of you occupied along with with Tilly, Sadie, Mary-Beth, Charles, Javier and Lenny. The only thing you could remember from this trip was to wake up to Javier snoring beneath your bed and Charles grumbling about the overall noise of the boat. This short moment which did not last long since you quickly drifted back to sleep, nuzzling against Arthur. 

"Y/N, wake up."

"Hmmm..." you grumbled

"Come on, sweetheart. We’re here."

Arthur was gently shaking you, helping you out of bed. Your deep sleep did not allow you to feel that the boat had landed on a makeshift port of an island called Islamorada, where a few people already lived. You stretched a little, still drowsy as Arthur gently held your hand through the boat’s corridors, leading you out of the boat. You were blinded by this large sunlight, barely able to understand what was going on, but you could notice that the gang had settled its camp somewhere between a set of palm trees. 

"Still sleepy, huh ?" Lenny asked you, passing by. "You had some good sleep down there ! "

"Where are we ?" you asked 

"Islamorada, child !" Dutch shouted from the dock. "Now, some help is really needed to keep moving our stuff !"

You rubbed your eyes one more time, getting a clearer view of the surroundings. The location where the boat had berthed was fairly magical, you could not deny it. From an endless beach to these palm trees bordering it, and this clear blue water ! You let go of Arthur’s hand, moving closer to the boat’s guard-rail on which you leaned. You were like a child discovering something new ! You smiled, your eyes were wide-open as you could not help but admire this beautiful scenery. Just like on the pictures and on paintings, if not even better ! 

"It’s amazing !" you said 

"Sure." Arthur responded 

Arthur could not take his eyes off you. He was absolutely delighted by your facial expression, continuously smiling. He had never seen you this much thrilled to see something new ! Your happiness was heartwarming enough to cause his heartrate to increase. He bent a little over you and gently kissed your temple. Arthur could easily feel your excitement, especially as soon as you noticed Tilly and Mary-Beth playing in the waves, only wearing their undergartments. However, you had to help the others to set this new camp on place, which turned out to be very hard. You could not look away from this endless sea which was ahead of you. 

It took a few hours to move everything from the boat to the island. But, as soon as your tasks were finished, you quickly took a few of your clothes off and ran to the sea. You were quite surprised that the water was somewhat colder than the one of Flat Iron Lake, but you barely cared. You quickly buried your feet into the sand before letting yourself fall forward when a wave was about to take you. You laughed as you got your head out of water, watching fishes making their way around your legs, nearly screaming as you spotted a crab walk past your feet. It was magical ! All these tropical species moving by you, you had never seen any of them ! You kept swimming just above these fishes, still remaining close to the shore. You did not want to be taken away by these huge waves ! 

"Hey, has anyone seen Y/N ?" Arthur was asking to gang members

Arthur was gradually getting worried, unable to find you anywhere. He had been looking for you for more than a hour. Tilly and Mary-Beth were already back to camp and were doing their chores under Ms. Grimshaw’s sight, Kieran told him he had last seen you by the beach. Arthur walked past Jack, playing with a stick in the sand until spotting you playing in the waves. 

"Y/N !" he called you 

"Oh, Arth…- !" 

You had no much time to answer his call, large wave hit the back of your head and washed you ashore. Arthur quickly ran in the water to drag you out of it, you kept coughing. Swallowing this salty water felt terrible and was certainly disgusting ! Arthur lifted you above his shoulder to walk a few feet away from the waves, putting you down as soon as he acknowledged that you were no longer coughing. 

"Easy there." he chuckled. "You ain’t used to it."

"I’m gonna go back !" you said, making your way back to the sea 

"No, Y/N. It’s kinda dangerous, I’ll go with you."

You rose an eyebrow as Arthur took his suspenders off and unbuttoned his shirt, throwing it on the sand. You were surprised he would go with you, but his overall fear of loosing was certainly leading him to behave this way. You did not mind his overprotective side at times, still doing your best to show him how bold and brave you were. You were an excellent pocket thief and a skilled gunslinger, but the love Arthur vowed you often led him to be mortified whenever you would be sent en robberies alone. Arthur loved you so much that any scratch would cause him to panic, still displaying a rather sarcastic side whenever he found it was mostly a minor injury. 

Arthur grabbed your hand and walked into the water, plunging in one of the waves while you looked around, appreciating the view for a minute or two until he jumped out of water to scare you, clapping his hands on the water to splash you.

"Imma sea monster !" he roared

You nearly fell back as Arthur was mercilessly laughing before disappearing underwater for a second time, causing you to look around. Just like Sean and Lenny, Arthur had enjoyed having fun in Flat Iron Lake with you, he did not mind putting his seriousness aside to have a bit of "fun".

"Arthur !" you chuckled

You self something between your legs, Arthur had placed them on his shoulders and rose from underwater. You screamed as you could feel how tall you were over there, gazing around while spreading your arms wide to keep a minimum balance. You could see that Sean and Lenny were on their way to join you in your childish games, MacGuire was the one who loved that the most ! Causing mischief was great, but playing harmless games in the water was much better ! That view was quite enjoyable, you adored it, at least for the short seconds you spent on Arthur’s shoulders before he started a very sudden countdown. 

"Three !" he shouted 

"What ?"

"Two !"

"Arthur, wait !"

"One !"

You screamed again, laughing as Arthur fell backwards with you on his shoulders as soon as he shouted zero. You got carried by a wave, unfortunately swallowing that salty water again, causing you to jump out and cough before moving to Arthur, mercilessly splashing him. You wanted to take your revenge, but could not face him and his strength without someone else’s help. Thankfully enough, Sean and Lenny quickly came to your rescue ! Each one of them grabbed one of Arthur’s legs, causing him to fall backwards after screaming a little. 

"Excellent catch, Mr. Summers !" Sean laughed 

"Thank you, Mr. MacGuire !" Lenny responded 

Arthur rose from the water again, quickly grabbing Sean by the waist and lifting him up before throwing him a little forward, laughing so much that he would nearly suffocate. He did the same for Lenny, still acting in a rather gentle way, throwing him near Sean. Listening to Arthur’s laugh made your heart melt. His wet hair and short beard did not make things easier ! How handsome he was when he was laughing… smiles suited him more than his usual grumpy face ! His eyes sparkled like stars when he turned his head back to you, causing you to nearly collapse. You could not resist to his charms, to his smile, to his eyes. You could not. 

"Ain't ya a beautiful thing, Y/N." he smiled 

"So are you." you answered 

You had enough time to kiss Arthur before Sean jumped out of water and wrapped his arms around his shoulders and his legs around his hips, making him fall backwards. There was nothing so genuine than adults having fun in the water, cowboys bathing in the Caribbean Blue. The girls joined you later on, despite Ms. Grimshaw’s complaints about their careless behaviour. But all of you enjoyed something as simple as playing between these large waves. It was so much better than robbing banks, for some reason ! All of you felt safe where you were, no Pinkertons would ever come and find you on Islamorada ! 

You spent a few hours in the water before finally deciding it was time to go back to camp. This sudden childish attitude of yours had triggered an intense fatigue in all of you, but Arthur was the one who was the most affected by it. Earlier in the afternoon, you had enjoyed having Arthur embracing you, his head nuzzled in the crook of your neck while playing on the sand. That night, nothing was much different. Arthur was in the exact same position, resting above you like a blanket, his head placed on your shoulder, one of his hands holding the collar of your opened shirt. He loved being close to you, this close, resting into your embrace. You were reading a book to him, a book about the legends of the sea. And Arthur was so exhausted that he had been continuously drifting into sleep while listening to your soft and calming voice. The sound of the nearby waves did not help him stay awake either. 

"You can be so terrifying and sweet at times, Morgan…" you whispered, kissing the top of his head

"Mmmmh…"

Arthur grumbled a little, making you chuckle. You kept caressing his back with the tip of your fingers, enjoying this moment more than anything in the world. The waves were great, this landscape was amazing. But having your dearest man on Earth nuzzled against you felt like a treasure you were ready to cherish. He whined whenever you stopped rubbing his back and moaned of pleasure when you would proceed massaging his scalp. He adored your reassuring presence, just like he dared protecting you. You were each other’s treasures.

You kept reading until your eyes started closing themselves, causing you to place your book aside. You could hear Javier sing by the fire with Uncle playing some harmonica, while Micah was most certainly minding his own business by the sea. Hosea passed by your tent, you heard his steps and his chuckle. 

"Well, these two are asleep too !" he told Dutch. "Seems like everyone is exhausted around here !" 

"Playing in the sea like kids didn't help much, Hosea." Dutch responded with a soft voice. "They’ll be be feeling better tomorrow." 

"I hope, we need food here. This ain't a vacation."

Indeed, you needed food, and this was no vacation to anyone. However, nobody could deny how great this situation was, and how much everyone seemed to enjoy it. Even Hosea had walked by the beach, kicking the water a few times with a large smile. This place would be good for a while, that’s for sure. Everyone was safe, including Arthur, resting into your embrace. Everyone would be safe. At least, this is what you hoped. 

"Things will get better, things will be good. We're safe."

Well, after drawing 88 different skeletal characters, here it is, the full series of "A Buncha Boneheads"! I was originally going to try and sell this as a poster but after looking into it, I don't think I can do that unless I want to deal with several dozen copyright laws.

This was quite the fun little exercise for me- the biggest challenge was trying to emulate the art styles of so many different series and properties. There are definitely more skull-headed characters out there that I could add, but frankly I think a nice even 88 is good enough, and there are other projects I want to work on for the future. Overall I'm pretty proud of this.

With that said, let me know if I've made a spelling mistake or something anywhere on here- I've tried my best but I just know I missed one or two somewhere.

@justalittleconfusing I love it when people ask about my playlists, the vibes are important! I consistently use these when writing and I think for most I have posted them on the story as well? And most of these playlists are several hours long as well. If I encounter a song that goes with any vibe I will add it.

Love, I like a challenge (Quidditch fic) (Spotify link) This is the Horny(tm) list. There is some romance in there but it's definitely the steamiest list I have. Occasionally also use it for smut writing

The Zong affair

J.M.W. Turner took up a serious incident in 1840 and expressed it in a painting. The incident was the so-called Zong Affair, which changed the attitude towards the British slave trade.

The Zong was until 1777 a Dutch slaver under the name Zorg and after her carpering she belonged to William Gregson and George Case, two well known merchants in the city of Liverpool and former mayors of the city. She sailed from the west coast of Africa on September 6, 1781 with 442 Africans bought as slaves on board, which made the ship completely overloaded and so she did not have sufficient supplies for such a large number of slaves. The poor people were chained in pairs, right leg and left leg, right hand and left hand, each of them having less space than a man in a coffin. The journey took nearly two months, and during that time most of the slaves were malnourished and suffering from disease. Captain Collingwood had lost his way in the Caribbean, which further prolonged the voyage. 60 slaves and 7 crew members had already died, and Collingwood knew that those who survived in poor condition would not fetch a high price on the slave market. He decided to use the lack of fresh water as an excuse to note that his "crew was endangered" to justify throwing 133 living slaves overboard. A reason that had a sinister background.

55 more were thrown overboard on November 29, and another 42 on November 30. A heavy rainstorm the following day provided fresh water, but another 26 slaves were thrown overboard that day, and another 10 jumped in to defy the captain, hugging each other as they sank. It was later claimed that the slaves were thrown overboard for the safety of the ship, as the ship did not have enough water to keep them alive for the rest of the voyage. This claim was later refuted as the ship still had 420 gallons (1910 liters) of water when it arrived in Jamaica on December 22. Let's move on to the reason why Captain Collingwood threw the people overboard alive. Behind it was an insurance policy. Because if a slave died on board, the insurers would not pay, seeing this as "poor cargo management." They would only pay the full sum insured if a slave went overboard alive. The owners demanded £30 per head from the insurers, which was disputed. The owners' lawyer argued, "These people are not charged with murder at all, there is not the slightest allegation”. After the insurers appealed, Lord Chief Justice Manfield upheld the shipowners: "The question left to the jury was whether it was necessary that the slaves should be thrown into the sea, for they had no doubt that the case of the slaves was the same as if horses had been thrown overboard." This ruling that removal was lawful led to a significant turning point in abolitionist campaigns.

The nondenominational Society for the Abolition of the Slave Trade was founded in 1787. The following year, Parliament passed the first law regulating the slave trade, the Slave Trade Act of 1788, to limit the number of slaves per ship. In 1791, Parliament prohibited insurance companies from compensating shipowners when enslaved Africans were murdered by being thrown overboard. A monument to enslaved Africans murdered on Zong was erected in Black River, Jamaica.

Atlantica is located in the Mediterranean Sea (which is canon as stated in 2019 in the official Disney Princess Youtube), which is a sea connected to the Atlantic Ocean. It was first founded thousands of years ago by the Greek God Poseidon, God of the seas, storms, earthquakes, and horses. He and Amphitrite then had Triton who was assigned to become King of the Seven Seas and ruler of the Kingdom of Atlantica.

Atlantica is one of the many peaceful underwater kingdoms where King Triton resides with his daughters: Attina, Alana, Adella, Aquata, Arista, Andrina and Ariel. It is the strongest underwater kingdom in existence and where mermaids seek refuge when danger lurks outside. Atlantica is protected by a magical shield created by Triton's trident, making it invisible to humans and impossible for creatures such as sharks to approach. Only mermaids and harmless animals are welcome here.

King Triton meets Athena in 1517 and the two wed in 1520, thus Athena becomes Queen Athena. They do not bear children until much later.

Ursula (born 1750), meets Triton in 1768 and through a series of events, ends up living at the palace. She is banned in 1782 for reasons unknown to everyone except Triton and Athena.

Attina is born 1789 (In a monarchy point of view, she is next in line to become Queen of Atlantica. However, as they are all immortals, it's hard to pinpoint how that would happen.)

Alana is born in 1790.

Adella is born in 1791.

Aquata is born in 1792.

Arista is born in 1793.

Andrina is born in 1794.

Ariel is born on December 18th, 1795.

Eric is born on July 16th, 1793.

Athena passes away in 1800, after being crushed by a pirate ship and music is then banned from Atlantica.

Music returns to Atlantica in 1810, during the events of The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Beginning.

The events of The Little Mermaid happen during the year 1812 (in May-June, when Ariel is 16 and Eric is 18), where she meets and falls in love with Eric. She marries him the year after in June of 1813 (when she is 17 and he is 19) and becomes future Queen Consort of Italy as Eric's kingdom is located in Sardinia, Italy, making him Prince of Italy (this has been up for debate. however, in BOTH the original novel and the movie, it is HEAVILY IMPLIED that the kingdom is located in a Mediterranean country, more than likely Italy, despite the writer being Danish).

Ariel becomes pregnant with Melody in May of 1814 and Melody is born on February 27th of 1815.

The events of The Little Mermaid II are set in February-March of 1827.

As Ariel's family ( except Athena ) are all descendants of Poseidon, a God, they are all demigods and immortals.

The trident can only be used by Triton or any of his descendants (hence why Melody could get ahold of it).

Each sister represents a different sea: Attina - Bering Sea, Alana - Black Sea, Adella - Mediterranean Sea, Aquata - Coral Sea, Arista - White Sea, and Andrina is the Caribbean Sea, with Ariel being the Red Sea.

Amity Park is next to multiples large lakes and rivers, the Ghost Zone is underwater, all the ghosts are mers, and Danny is struggling to find a way to explain his sudden aversion to any things water. This is my last chapter of this that counts for Phic Phight 2023 points. I really enjoyed participating in the Phight and can't wait for next year!

     Danny couldn't breathe. Eyes from every corner of the room were fixated on him, watching his every move. For a solid minute nobody moved. A loud cackle broke out from the crowd

    "Oh, Ancients! This is rich!" A gruff voice called out. It was the scary mohawk dude from before. He continued laughing before finally calming down enough to continue, "I'm sorry. I'm sorry! It's just there's no way the fate of the world rests on the shoulders of that whelp!"

    Some others murmured in agreement. Dora swam over to the Important Lady and whispered some things to her. Expressions flashed across the lady's face starting with disbelief and ending with shock.

   The sea of crowds parted as the four-armed lady made her way over to Danny.

   "Have you, child, seen the Time Master?" She asked in a hushed voice. Danny nodded meekly. He took a hard swallow. The Lady looked him up and down. She noticed the bracelet.

    "He…he is the chosen one," her voice gave away her disbelief. The crowd whispered to each other. 

   "Well, I suppose we should begin your training."

   The Important Lady, who Danny finally learned was Pandora, took him down a hallway in the complex. Pandora opened a large door to a room with seven large thrones each etched with the name of the seven main seas. In five of the seats sat some of the people Danny saw onstage as well as a few others.

     A giant kelp monster occupied the Pacific throne. It definitely wasn't a Kelpie because those were more like horses. This person(?) was more like a sentient lump of kelp and other underwater plants.

    On the Arctic throne, a giant, white, and hairy crab was talking to one of the attendants. He reminded Danny of those crabs that live on the bottom of the ocean. Danny's gaze shifted to the crab's giant ice pincher. Better not get on the wrong side of that guy.

    The India throne was occupied by a formless figure that was made out of a night sky. The only thing Danny could make out was a pair of horns.

   On the Mexico seat, a semi-normal looking mer sat. The current seemed to swirl around him, going faster or slower depending on his mood.

   The last occupied seat was the Caribbean. A familiar man in a purple cloak smiled at the young boy as Pandora took her place on the Mediterranean throne.

   The middle throne was definitely the biggest, but it was vacant. Danny stared nervously at the six intimidating figures in front of him. The kelp creature sludged over to him. 

   The plant circled him like a shark on a feeding frenzy before speaking, "This is our chosen one?"

   "I know what you think, Undergrowth. I was hesitant as well, but he was the one who pulled the sword," Pandora spoke.

   "He's a child!" The man with the whirlpool around him argued. 

   "Sometimes great things come in small sizes," Clockwork cryptically replied.

    "His aura is different. He does not feel like a normal drowned," the shadow creature spoke. Its voice warbled around the room.

    "You are correct, Nocturne, I believe the young boy has been blessed," the crab chimed in.

    "Clockwork! Did you have anything to do with this!" An angry jellyfish with a giant eye got right into the time master's face. The scar on the man's face crinkled as he smiled.

    "All is as it should be."

    "You can't be serious! You are not supposed to interfere!"

     "Ah, but then who would save us? Many strong men and women would have tried, but none had the right character to have the best outcome."

    "Why you!!!!" 

    The eyeball jellyfish began to squabble while Clockwork sat gracefully in his chair. Attention shifted back to Danny.

    "We should begin your training," Pandora stated, "We have assigned Princess Dorothea of the North Sea to be your basic magic teacher. Once you develop, if you develop a core ability, we will find someone suitable to train you. I will teach you the ways of combat. We shall begin tomorrow at dawn."

    "Uh, Ms Pandora? I would love to train and all, but I also start high school tomorrow, and I don't want to miss my first day," Danny squeaked out. The council began to whisper to each other. One of the stupid jellyfish burst into hysterics.

   "YOU MEAN TO TELL ME THAT HE'S NOT EVEN A FULL MER!!!! Clockwork you should be stripped of your powers where you stand! The land people can not be privy to the secrets of the deep!"

    Clockwork took a calm sigh and stood up.

   "Young Daniel may not be a full mer, but he is not intended to be. The world is in need of one to unite the sea with the land, and Daniel is the perfect candidate."

   "But what if he turns like the other one did?"

   "I will ensure that he doesn't."

   "Wait there's another one? Like me?" Danny spoke up. The people in the room looked at him like parents who didn't want to explain something to their child. Pandora bit the bullet and spoke up.

   "There is one like you. At first, he seemed like one of good intent. As time went on, however, he became increasingly hostile. He is the reason we are in this situation."

   "Was he also blessed by Clockwork?"

   "No. He was cursed by a Spectra, the sea witch."

    They finished planning Danny's regimen before Danny left for home. Apparently no time passes when you're in the dome because it was only a few minutes later than when he first got in the water. He slipped some shorts on and began to walk back home.

   He felt a little bit better about the whole chosen thing, now that he had some people to teach him. His mind was lost in thought before a familiar voice called out to him.

    "Hey Danny!" Danny looked up to see Sam and Tucker. A smile crept on his face as he walked over to his friends.

   "New shirt?" Sam asked

   "Yep! Jazz and I made it with scraps of jumpsuits."

    "It looks good for beach days," Tucker commented.

    "I agree. Anyways, we were about to come get you to see if you wanted to go to my house for a movie," Sam mentioned. Danny nodded his head, and the trio headed off towards the Manson Mansion.

Some cultural elements I might add to a future Narnia adaptation:

Not sure what culture to base Archenland on but maybe cast them as people of color?

For that matter, cast actors of color as some of the indigenous Narnian characters, especially the more human-looking ones like nymphs and such.

Cast Pasifika actors as the Telmarines, since Lewis described them as descendants of pirates in the South Seas who married locals and found their way into Narnia. Perhaps clarify in this adaptation that the marriages were willing (which doesn't seem to have been the case in the novel), for example by changing the pirates to less violent sailors and establishing that this happened before Europe (and the US, and Japan) colonized the Pacific.

Calormen. Hoo boy. If I had to touch this, first I'd base them on, like, ancient Mesopotamia more than the Arabian Nights. Second I'd actually, you know, flesh out their culture and depict both Calormene and Narnian society with pros and cons, instead of the angle of "Narnia's proper medievalesque Christian values are better in every way than Calormen's Oriental Despotism™" that the books took.

Related to the above, possibly depict The Horse and His Boy and The Last Battle as in-universe anti-Calormene propaganda (not just to avoid the racism, but because The Last Battle is kind of a downer). Hell, I even remember The Silver Chair mentioning The Horse and His Boy as a story told at the giants' castle—over a thousand years after the events of THaHB, so some details may have changed in the retelling even if it was based on real events. Maybe Rabadash did invade Archenland, but the actual casus belli wasn't "swarthy foreign prince lusts after white woman," but (in keeping with the Mesopotamian angle I mentioned) "Archenland cancels shipment of subpar copper." Also Aravis and Lasaraleen were totally an item.

For that matter, diversify the human visitors from Britain? This could help avoid the colonial vibe that people have pointed out regarding the kids waltzing into Narnia and ruling the place, a vibe that could become especially pronounced if both the indigenous population and the Telmarines are cast as people of color. I personally like the idea of the Pevensies as Romani or Irish Travellers (Paveensies?), Digory Kirke as Anglo-Indian (hell his dad is mentioned to be in India for work, so maybe that's where they're originally from), and Jill Pole as Afro-Caribbean.

Feel free to expand on this and add your own two cents, especially since I'm white myself and I could very easily be getting something wrong.

Atlantica is located in the Mediterranean Sea (which is canon as stated in 2019 in the official Disney Princess Youtube), which is a sea connected to the Atlantic Ocean. It was first founded thousands of years ago by the Greek God Poseidon, God of the seas, storms, earthquakes, and horses. He and Amphitrite then had Triton who was assigned to become King of the Seven Seas and ruler of the Kingdom of Atlantica.

Atlantica is one of the many peaceful underwater kingdoms where King Triton resides with his daughters: Attina, Alana, Adella, Aquata, Arista, Andrina and Ariel. It is the strongest underwater kingdom in existence and where mermaids seek refuge when danger lurks outside. Atlantica is protected by a magical shield created by Triton's trident, making it invisible to humans and impossible for creatures such as sharks to approach. Only mermaids and harmless animals are welcome here.

Poseidon is born to Cronus and Rhea.

Atlantica is formed and becomes Poseidon's domain.

Poseidon meets Amphitrite.

They have Triton and he is named King of the Seven Seas and becomes ruler of Atlantica.

Poseidon and Amphitrite mysteriously disappear.

King Triton meets Athena in 1517 and the two wed in 1520, thus Athena becomes Queen Athena. They do not bear children until much later.

Ursula (born 1750), meets Triton in 1768 and through a series of events, ends up living at the palace. She is banned in 1782 for reasons unknown to everyone except Triton and Athena.

Attina is born 1789 (In a monarchy point of view, she is next in line to become Queen of Atlantica. However, as they are all immortals, it's hard to pinpoint how that would happen.)

Alana is born in 1790.

Adella is born in 1791.

Aquata is born in 1792.

Arista is born in 1793.

Andrina is born in 1794.

Ariel is born on December 18th, 1795.

Eric is born on July 16th, 1793.

Athena passes away in 1800, after being crushed by a pirate ship and music is then banned from Atlantica.

Music returns to Atlantica in 1810, during the events of The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Beginning.

The events of The Little Mermaid happen during the year 1812 (in May-June, when Ariel is 16 and Eric is 18), where she meets and falls in love with Eric. She marries him the year after in June of 1813 (when she is 17 and he is 19) and becomes future Queen Consort of Italy as Eric's kingdom is located in Sardinia, Italy, making him Prince of Italy (this has been up for debate. however, in BOTH the original novel and the movie, it is HEAVILY IMPLIED that the kingdom is located in a Mediterranean country, more than likely Italy, despite the writer being Danish).

Ariel becomes pregnant with Melody in May of 1814 and Melody is born on February 27th of 1815.

The events of The Little Mermaid II are set in February-March of 1827.

As Ariel's family ( except Athena ) are all descendants of Poseidon, a God, they are all demigods and immortals.

The trident can only be used by Triton or any of his descendants (hence why Melody could get ahold of it).

Each sister represents a different sea: Attina - Bering Sea, Alana - Black Sea, Adella - Mediterranean Sea, Aquata - Coral Sea, Arista - White Sea, and Andrina is the Caribbean Sea, with Ariel being the Red Sea.

alright i watched on stranger tides and dead men tell no tales finally. i know you’ve all been waiting on pins and needles for my thoughts, so:

on stranger tides is......fine. good, even.

but i can’t believe this is called a “return to low fantasy” given...everything. like AWE is clearly high fantasy, but there were only one or two elements that pushed it into that category. OST has at least three or four that easily could have been removed and replaced with more conventional and appropriate stakes

RIP to groves and gillette who didn’t deserve that

barbossa’s back must hurt from carrying this entire film. his monologue about his leg is fucking all-time

the humor was not great and i cannot believe how far it fell lmao

it was pretty fun to see jack on his own for a bit, but i do think he shines best when paired with barbossa or gibbs in this one

i do love barbossa and i feel like they were really missing out by not focusing more on his emotional threads

henry and carina were really good casts. they really looked like their parents

not to beat a dead horse. but. i feel like having a sympathetic admiral representing the royal navy in this film would’ve added a lot of weight to the premise. maybe that royal admiral could be a close friend of henry’s mother with a vested interest in his well-being and return to civilized society, rather than some inconsequential bullshit about the glory of england from a guy who matters so little i didn’t even catch his name. maybe...this admiral could be a skilled pirate hunter who knows the caribbean very well...the only officer who ever bested jack sparrow...who could that be i wonder...

i’m just saying while they were retconning shit from the first three movies they could at LEAST have considered bringing my man norrington back from the dead. maybe let him wear a ridiculous wig. that’s all i ask

i admit i did tear up seeing older will and elizabeth being happy and reunited at the end. it is hilarious that elizabeth had no lines but i’ll take what i can get

in general: please. i am so tired of undead enemies to fight. i know it’s at least partially to excuse the lack of blood, but for god’s sake we know it’s a pg13 movie you do NOT have to keep having new ways for death to not matter. there is nothing wrong with enemies being normal mortals because human conflict is the most interesting thing about the franchise. (i feel like will becoming captain of the dutchman should’ve solved some of these things at least a little anyway. he should’ve been chasing salazar’s ass the entire time. but what do i know)

and i’m really not opposed to jack’s character slipping as much as it did in potc5 if they acknowledged it at all. i was giving the script the benefit of the doubt and thinking his newfound foolishness would tie in with barbossa’s arc. maybe jack and hector talk about how they’ve ruled the seas for as long as they have, and they’re old, and there’s only so much of the world left for them to chase. and maybe they’re not as good at this shit as they used to be!! carina being so involved in science could have been a catalyst for them to realize that hell, technology is beginning to outpace them and sailing is changing as a result. or something. but no. this would require any sort of reflection. so the idiocy persists for the goofs. goddamnit

i wonder if this says anything about the franchise as a whole. that the same characters fight death, over and over, never dying, and they never address the fact that they are clearly aging and dragging out their adventures on the seas well beyond their prime time, unwilling to make room for new faces and unable to move on from the days of old. but i’m sure it’s nothing

February 1st, Bayamo to Baracoa

Breakfast at 7:00, while presentation and service was very nice, fruit was papaya only, juice, watered down papaya and no butter for the small pieces of bread, only mayoand eggs. Shared my P.B. 😉

Hopped into a horse drawn carriage and were given a 45 minute tour of the city. It was really nice. Saw the 1st convent in Cuba, and the homes of the first two presidents of Cuba, the first being Carlos de Cespedes. The first sanctioned outdoor burial ground of the leaders of the revolution of 1868. Previously all burials were in churches. We travelled along a road where all trees had been destroyed by the last big hurricane, all the trunks have been carved into animals and they line both sides of the street. Last a monument to all of those that have died in the revolutions.

Left the beautiful state owned hotel, to get on the road. They were not able to supply us with the box lunch of ham sandwiches as they have a shortage of bread. Plan on stopping at roadside vendors to get fruit etc for lunch.

In the eastern part of the island still lots of old cars but mostly European or Russian models as opposed to North American. We did see what appeared to be a Cuban military base and they seemed to be initiating some new recruits. 

Stopped at a roadside stand a bought a large bunch of bananas for 100 pesos and a string of clementines for 200 pesos. Later again, we stopped in a small town and purchase small cheese 8” pizzas/tacos for 50 pesos each.

As we drove along, country fences are now made of different kind of cacti planted so close together that animals can not pass through. Brilliant idea.

In the last few days I have tried to summarize what I think I heard from our CEO and signage I’ve seen, however, due to no internet I have not been able to fact check, so I hope I am recording the proper facts.

So, during our ride today, we talked about the revolution again where Cuba revolted against Spain. The first revolution lasted 10 years from 1868 to 1878 and was not successful. Again they attempted in 1895 led by Matta, by 1998 they were actually seeking help from the Americans. The Americans came to their aid and there was a big naval battle that ended the revolution and occupation of Spain. Cuban thought they had gained their independence but the Platt clause from the US Government, was that if Cuba wanted to be an independent country, they had to allow a army base and that the US could intervene if Cuban leadership became questionable. Thus the Guatamanno Bay base. 

Takes a long time to get anywhere as you share the road with bicycles, horses and carts, rickshaws, motor bikes and cars and trucks. Flagged down by a police officer today, and when we stopped he was trying arrange a ride for his grown nephew on our bus. Answer was no.

We stop for our lunch at 2:30 p.m. at a beach on the Caribbean Sea where we had our pizza, pineapple, tomatoes and bananas. No sand on these beaches just polished rock and pieces of washed up coral. Proceeded to travel on a winding road through the mountains to Baracoa, for several hours. All S curves.

Arrive at our Casa around 5:30 p.m., Casa Elvira. Larry and I are on the 3rd floor and have an outdoor patio area on the roof. It is a  very interesting home and we are going to enjoy our few days here. The place is owned by Elvira and Alfredo. We joined our group for a short walk around the city, but it was dark already, so we headed to our dinner place which was a private house dinner. The chef was amazing. We started with bread and papaya juice and cream of pumpkin soup, then tomatoes, cucumber, yams, plantain and coconut milk mixed and green beans. A curry coconut sauce was provided with the vegetables. Main course was sword fish, chicken deep fried jams and another root vegetable. Dessert was sliced papaya and marinated glazed orange peel with cinnamon served with espresso coffee. Could hardly walk and all for 1440 pesos each. Walked back to the Casa, showered and to bed. Big day tomorrow.
