A Swiss bank president hires a former U.S. Justice Department official to ferret out a group of blackmailers who have learned the identity of five, anonymous numbered account holders, including a Chicago mob figure who is also being pursued by American gangsters. Investigator David Christopher (David Janssen) identifies four potential suspects, including the bank vice-president's mistress, Rita (Elke Sommer). Adding to the intrigue are the suspicions of the Swiss Federal Police which complicates the investigation. When the bank pays the chief blackmailer in uncut diamonds, the ransom rendezvous results in a dramatic showdown in the snow-covered Alps and a shocking revelation.

One of the most original time-travel thrillers since 12 Monkeys. A brilliant subversion of the Time Paradox trope, with enough plot twists to keep you entertained until well after the movie is finished. Predestination is an amazing movie with great performances from Ethan Hawke and Sarah Snook. It’s a movie that will feel like Inception, when it comes to messing with your mind and barely anyone has heard of it. It is highly underrated and unknown, sadly.

A zombie virus breaks out and catches up with a father as he is taking his daughter from Seoul to Busan, South Korea’s second-largest city. Watch them trying to survive to reach their destination, a purported safe zone.

The acting is spot-on; the set pieces are particularly well choreographed. You’ll care about the characters. You’ll feel for the father as he struggles to keep his humanity in the bleakest of scenarios.

It’s a refreshingly thrilling disaster movie, a perfect specimen of the genre.

Serenity is a futuristic sci-fi film that serves as a feature-length continuation of the story-line from the TV program Firefly (2002–2003). The story revolves around the captain (Nathan Fillion) and crew of the titular space vessel that operate as space outlaws, running cargo and smuggling missions throughout the galaxy. They take on a mysterious young psychic girl and her brother, the girl carrying secrets detrimental to the intergalactic government, and soon find themselves being hunted by a nefarious assassin (Chiwetel Ejiofor). However, when at a tele-marketing job an old-timer tells him to use a “white voice”, he starts moving up the ranks of his bizarre society. A really smart movie that will be mostly enjoyed by those who watch it for its entertaining value, and not so much for its commentary. It is like a Black Mirror episode stretched into a movie.

Ex Machina is the directorial debut of Alex Garland, the writer of 28 Days Later (and 28 Weeks Later). It tells the story of Caleb (Domhnall Gleeson from About Time), an IT developer who is invited by a billionaire CEO to participate in a groundbreaking experiment — administering a Turing test to a humanoid robot called Ava (Alicia Vikander). Meeting the robot with feelings of superiority at first, questions of trust and ethics soon collide with the protagonist’s personal views. While this dazzling film does not rely on them, the visual effects and the overall look-feel of Ex Machina are absolutely stunning and were rightly picked for an Academy Award. They make Ex Machina feel just as casually futuristic as the equally stylish Her and, like Joaquin Phoenix, Gleeson aka Caleb must confront the feelings he develops towards a machine, despite his full awareness that ‘she’ is just that. This is possibly as close to Kubrick as anyone got in the 21st century. Ex Machina is clever, thrilling, and packed with engaging ideas.

Ein beschwingendes Open Air-Konzert: AnnenMayKantereit am Losheimer Stausee (27.8.2023)

Die Kölner Band AnnenMayKantereit hat am 27. August das Saarland mit einem Open Air-Auftritt an Losheim am See beehrt und dort den Schlusspunkt unter ein vollgepacktes Konzertwochenende gesetzt. Nach Cro und Feine Sahne Fischfilet spielte die Band am Sonntag vor einer ausverkauften Wiese mit dem See im Rücken. Im Laufe des Konzertes ergänzte ein fast runder Mond die schöne Kulisse. Nach der Wiener Punk-Rap-Band Sharktank boten das Trio mit der nach dem Ausscheiden von Malte Huck dazu gestoßenen E-Bassistin Sophie Chassée und der von Ferdinand Schwarz für die Tour 2022 zusammengestellten achtköpfigen „Instrumentalisten-Gang“ etwas mehr als anderthalb Stunden Programm bei einer sehr schönen Atmosphäre und viel Engagement bei allen Beteiligten.

Beim ersten Auftritt in Losheim gibt Henning May kurz mit gegoogelten Fakten an: 15 000 Gäste bei 15 800 ortsansässigen Einwohnern, auch wenn von denen nach Gitarrist Christopher Annens Zählung bei der eingeforderten Meldung nur sechs Leute da wären (die Hände am Rande der Bühne hat er da übersehen). May aber verspricht indirekt schon einleitend die Rückkehr: „Desto lauter ihr seid, desto eher kommen wir wieder“, sagt er nach dem ersten Stück und bevor er den Beweis dafür gleich einfordert. Bei Pocahontas bräuchte er die volle Unterstützung des Publikums – und die bekommt er auch. Dieses Phänomen ist schon auf den Aufnahmen der ersten großen Konzerte der seit 2013 öffentlich beachteten, 2011 gegründeten einstigen Schüler- und Straßenband zu hören. Die Stimmen des überwiegend weiblichen Publikums sind ohrenbetäubend und überstrahlen schon auf der Live-Aufnahme aus Berlin von 2016 die tiefe, tragfähige Stimme des Frontmanns. Über YouTube wurden die Kölner auch mit eigen klingenden akustischen Coverversionen bekannt, um dann 2016 mit der ersten Tour zum ersten Album eine neue Dimension kennenzulernen und 2022 durch die Ergänzung ihrer Band um die genannte „Gang“ ihrer einfach gestrickten aber Live besonders in den Bann ziehenden Musik eine notwendig gewordene neue Note zu geben. Im Sommer 2023 präsentieren sie ein geschickt gesetztes Set aus Mitgröl-Titeln (Pocahontas; 21,22,23; Wohin du gehst; Oft gefragt; Barfuß am Klavier und Tommi), nachdenklichen und verlangsamten Liedern (Es ist Abend und wir sitzen bei mir; Gegenwart; Als sich ein Kind war; Du bist anders; 3 Tage am Meer; Marie; Jenny, Jenny; Vielleicht, vielleicht; Ozean), Partynummern (Lass es kreisen, Ich geh heut nicht mehr tanzen, Ausgehen) und etwas zu kurzen Instrumentaleinlagen der „Gang“, als Intro und Tarnung eines kurzen Bühnenwechsels. Die Kategorien sind hier schwer voneinander zu trennen. Alle Lieder haben einen eigenen (und sich auch rhythmisch nicht verändernden) AMK-Sound, der die Aspekte Mitgrölen (= Einfachheit, Einprägsamkeit), Nachdenklichkeit (= nah am Kipppunkt stehende textliche Poesie über Alltäglichkeiten) und letztlich doch jugendlichem Optimismus mit der Vorliebe für reale instrumentale Klangvorstellungen vereint. Auf der kleinen Bühne in der Mitte des Zuschauer-Teppichs wird aus dem Pop-Trio ein Gitarren-Trio und der Schlagzeuger Severin Kantereit wechselt wie zuvor bei der gemeinsam am Tisch sitzenden Präsentation vom Titeltrack des aktuellen Albums an das Saiteninstrument. Faszinierend ist, dass May in seinen Texten über traurige und melancholische Themen singt und die Band auf der Bühne gleichzeitig eine optimistische Feierstimmung beim Spielen dieser Lieder ausstrahlen kann. So tanzt er und das Publikum sich durch Ich geh heut nicht mehr tanzen und straft das hier klagende, isolierte Ich damit Lügen. Zudem scheint er auch nach all der Zeit seine vielfach gesungenen Lieder zu fühlen wie beim ersten Mal. Völlig versunken wandert das in Wohin du gehst besungene breite Grinsen nur bei den Ansagen über Mays Gesicht. Und wie er selbst richtig sagt, ist das was er zu geben hat, dass er sich die Seele "für euch [das Publikum]" aus dem Leib singt. Das klingt kitschig, ausgelutscht und übertrieben, beschreibt aber die Grundlage der Magie des so schnell vorbeirauschenden Konzertes sehr treffend.

Die harmonisch teilweise nach Irish Folk klingenden, insgesamt aber äußerst dezenten Arrangements des Trompeters Ferdinand Schwarz bereichern die zugegebenermaßen kompositorisch wenig abwechslungsreichen Stücke um neue Aspekte und außerdem ist der Einsatz von akustischen Instrumenten immer eine angenehme Abwechslung zum so synthetischen Stil der musikalischen Pop-Gegenwart – welcher die Band auch im Alter von 30+ Jahren nicht verfallen ist. Dennoch musste der anfänglich akustische Kontrabass letztlich dem E-Bass weichen und May sitzt auf der Bühne wohl aus logistischen Gründen am E-Piano, mehr Zugeständnisse wurden bisher aber – bei Live-Konzerten - nicht gemacht. AnnenMayKantereit vertritt eine alte Tradition des Musikanten- oder des Liedermachertums, der Freude am Spielen vor und mit dem Publikum (ohne Bühnenshowschnickschnack) und am in der digitalisierten Musikszene zunehmend weniger gepflegten Bandleben, dessen Mühen der Sänger und Textdichter gerade auf 12 und dem im Frühjahr dieses Jahres erschienenen Album thematisiert. Diese beiden Alben folgten einem schon mit Schlagschatten (2018) erkennbar abkühlenden Trend in der rasanten Bandentwicklung seit 2013 (was die Popularität, weniger die Musik betrifft) und gerade auf dem provisorisch produzierten Corona-Album 12 (2020) begann man sich dann doch ein wenig Sorgen um die Band zu machen. An die Energie und die Frische des Debüts werden sie auf Studioalben wohl nicht mehr herankommen, aber als Live-Band ist es eine andere Sache. May beklagt sich auf 12 darüber, dass sie die Früchte ihrer zehnjährigen Arbeit nun nicht ernten könnten und wie auch Peter Doherty ist er von den Schließungen der Kinos, Theater und Kneipen im Zuge der Coronamaßnahmen geschockt. Denn ohne Spielorte sind sie ihrer Kernkompetenz und Herzensangelegenheit entbunden: Lieder für ein Publikum singen (und dabei eventuell auch ein bisschen Geld verdienen).

So wie die Drei in Losheim auftreten sind Sorgen aber vorerst nicht nötig. Denn ihre große Stärke der konsequent inszenierten sympathischen Bescheidenheit, der Einfachheit des Auftretens und die erstaunliche Versunkenheit und Bühnenpräsenz des Sängers in seine schon so oft gespielten Stücke ist nicht verflogen und gerade in Ansagen wirken sie auch noch genauso unprofessionell oder positiv formuliert echt wie in den Anfangstagen 2016/7. Da ist sicher auch viel Imagearbeit dahinter, da die Band von Jugendbeinen an durch ein professionelles Management geführt wurde und sehr aktiv mit den Medien gearbeitet hat. Nun managen und veröffentlichen sie sich seit 2020 selbst und sind damit unabhängiger. Das Konzept geht bis hierhin auf und ermöglicht eine breite Zuhörerschaft – vom Fußballfan und Karnevalisten bis hin zu denjenigen, welche zwanghaft versuchen diese Elemente auszublenden und nur wenig an solchen Gesellschaftsereignissen haben. Rebellen sind diese Männer wahrlich nicht. Ihre politische Botschaft beschränkt sich auf einige leise Zeilen in ihren Liedern, eine Regenbogenflagge am Keyboard, die unter vertretbaren Bands schon fast Usus gewordene Abgrenzung von deutschen rechten Bands durch das Fernbleiben vom mittlerweile umstrukturierten, aber unverändert irrelevanten, deutschen Musikpreises Echo 2017 (stattdessen spielten sie im ausverkauften E-Werk in Saarbrücken ein Konzert) und die wiederholten Auftritte bei Aktionen der Klimabewegung. Politische Aussagen bleiben daher wie musikalische Innovation oder eine große Show bei diesem Konzert weitestgehend aus (ausgenommen von dem Lied Gegenwart, in welchem das Übersehen der sterbenden Flüchtlinge im Meer neben den Meldungen über Corona kritisiert wird und dem Hinweis auf den Stand von Greenpeace beim Konzert). Die Liedtexte von May widmen sich Alltagbeobachtungen, Selbstreflexionen und teilweise etwas gestelzten Metaphern sowie einer wachsenden Zusammenstellung an Frauennamen.

Dafür darf sich Ferdinand Schwarz einige Stunden vorab zum Geburtstag gratulieren lassen – gegen seinen Willen und so lautstark, dass May mit seiner Ansage erst im zweiten Versuch zum Ende kommt. Der Schwarz versprochene Erdbeerkuchen führt nicht zum Spielen des entsprechend betitelten Sommersongs. In zehn Jahren und auf fünf Alben (inkl. des Live-Albums AnnenMayKantereit & Freunde - Live in Berlin) haben sich doch einige Lieder angesammelt und so muss man an diesem Abend trotz der drei Zugaben Barfuß am Klavier (May Solo), Ausgehen (Band + Gang) und Tommi (AMK) neben Erdbeerkuchen auch auf Du tust mir nie mehr weh, Kein Stern, Katharina und Orangenlied vom gegenwärtigen Album; unter den Stücken aus den Debütjahren auf Es geht mir gut, Das Krokodil, Bitte Bleib, Nicht Nichts, Du bist überall (ein Stück gegen die Handymanie in Konzerten), alle englischsprachigen Titel und viele andere Lieder der Zwischenalben verzichten. Coversongs von Beatles-Klassikern werden nicht mehr benötigt, um einen Konzertrahmen zu füllen. Das Gesamtpaket ist an diesem kühlen Sommertag einfach gelungen: ein gut aufgelegtes Publikum, eine Band mit viel Spaß am Konzert, ein regenfreier Abend in idyllischer Kulisse und eine gut angelegte Setlist mit Einwürfen aller Alben. Erstaunlich wie so viel Melancholie so schön wirken und dem Zuschauer einen so positiv stimmenden Abend bescheren kann. Diese Energie wirkt tatsächlich auch noch einige Tage nach dem Konzert weiter nach.
