Nostalgia by Billy Collins
Remember the 1340s? We were doing a dance called the Catapult. You always wore brown, the color craze of the decade, and I was draped in one of those capes that were popular, the ones with unicorns and pomegranates in needlework. Everyone would pause for beer and onions in the afternoon, and at night we would play a game called "Find the Cow." Everything was hand-lettered then, not like today.
Where has the summer of 1572 gone? Brocade and sonnet marathons were the rage. We used to dress up in the flags of rival baronies and conquer one another in cold rooms of stone. Out on the dance floor we were all doing the Struggle while your sister practiced the Daphne all alone in her room. We borrowed the jargon of farriers for our slang. These days language seems transparent, a badly broken code.
The 1790s will never come again. Childhood was big. People would take walks to the very tops of hills and write down what they saw in their journals without speaking. Our collars were high and our hats were extremely soft. We would surprise each other with alphabets made of twigs. It was a wonderful time to be alive, or even dead.
I am very fond of the period between 1815 and 1821. Europe trembled while we sat still for our portraits. And I would love to return to 1901 if only for a moment, time enough to wind up a music box and do a few dance steps, or shoot me back to 1922 or 1941, or at least let me recapture the serenity of last month when we picked berries and glided through afternoons in a canoe.
Even this morning would be an improvement over the present. I was in the garden then, surrounded by the hum of bees and the Latin names of flowers, watching the early light flash off the slanted windows of the greenhouse and silver the limbs on the rows of dark hemlocks.
As usual, I was thinking about the moments of the past, letting my memory rush over them like water rushing over the stones on the bottom of a stream. I was even thinking a little about the future, that place where people are doing a dance we cannot imagine, a dance whose name we can only guess.

The Bones of the City
Originally posted to my blog. Photos also mine.
Tumblr media
Cities are most often written about by princes. The princes of the city think it is something that can be tamed, like a farmer who owns a cow and fattens it up for the slaughter. The city feeds on its surroundings, and grows fatter, and the princes lick their lips. They place their crown on the city's coins and the city's flag, but they will never be the city. They will never even own the city. They will fight and kill over it, and when they are gone the city will still be there. When one day the city dies, their names will be forgotten and the city will haunt the land until the last tower falls into ruin.
A city is a wild thing, uncontrollable. A massive chaotic entity that teems with boundless life; building, dreaming, plotting, loving and killing. But that's a subject for another post. Today I'm going to talk about a city's bones.
There are places in the city that are still wild. A hill too rocky, a ravine too deep to build on, where the birds and the wildflowers come in spring. Some of these wild places are hidden. Silt that shifts and hides shipwrecks under the foundations of palaces. Sewers that were once hewn out of stone with strength and steel, and are now lush and green and alive. The wilderness is not outside the city.
The princes believe that a city is an engine for conquering the wilderness. But you cannot conquer the wilderness. The wilderness is in the city's bones.
Tumblr media
In the park is a tree whose twisted branches are older than the first stone placed on another stone. Trees kept and cultivated for firewood hide the wild creatures that come out at night. The weeds that grow in the cobblestones are holy - follow them to a gate in an abandoned garden to find a door to the Other World.
One day you look up at a hill and find that it is bright yellow with wildflowers. Instead of walking home you walk to the top and meet a strange laughing man with flowers in his hair who doesn't leave a shadow.
There is a rock on which people write their secret dreams. The lines blend into each other over the millennia; the dreams are not so different from each other.
One evening you walk to the shores of the ocean. You look out and see it stretching from the ships and the docks and the sand beneath your feet to the very ends of the earth. Vast and cold and hungry and indifferent, the mother of all things.
When it rains, the old rivers come to life. The princes tried to straighten the road, and five houses washed away. The road has to wind like that; the bones of the city remember. Everything that happens, hangs on those bones.
People remember where to go to talk to the old gods. On the city map, it looks like a small scar, out of the way of commerce and trade. You might pass by the ravine and never notice it. But when you stand in it, you feel the beating heart of the deep forest. The bones of the city don't know the difference between a city and a wilderness. You cannot defeat them, you cannot even fight them, they simply are there, as eternal as the sun and the sea.

Morgantown
Colleen got up yesterday morning, and while she was making breakfast, announced that she was taking me into Morgantown for the day. I was so excited I ran back upstairs to change and find some boots. She just laughed and said she thought I should finish my breakfast. I haven’t left this house since we got here almost 6 weeks ago!
As I ate, hurriedly, she said she’d been trying to find me something special for Christmas. Then she handed me a box. The box looked pretty bad, but she assured me it was in good shape still. I lifted the lid and inside, nestled in tissue paper, was a brand new ProSnap Deluxe camera! The film inside was no good, but I learned how to craft film in chemistry class back in the Vault. I don’t think I’ve ever gotten a more perfect Christmas present. Colleen looked pretty pleased with herself, as I was beside myself with excitement.
We started walking toward town. We cut through the farm next door to the house. Colleen said when she was a kid, she’d come play with the goats and cow and help the neighbor lady pull weeds in her garden. The lady would share extra fruits and vegetables with Mama in return. Now the house is pretty run down and what’s left of the large garden has grown wild. I’m not sure if anyone will live here again, but I may come back to grab some things from that garden later.
As we walked, Colleen was preparing me for what we’d see. She said a lot of zombie like creatures called ghouls tend to roam the streets, especially in the residential areas. She suspects they once lived in these houses, since not many people are living in Morgantown these days. She said the only organized areas, if they could be called that, were the scorched-people who’s flesh looked burnt-at the airport and the high school. She said we’d steer clear of them, and they weren’t likely to bother us.
As we came into town, one structure commanded my attention first. It was a big brick building with red and white striped smokestacks reaching into the sky over a warehouse. MAMA DOLCE’S was emblazoned on the side under an American flag banner. Colleen glanced back from up ahead and said it was a food processing plant that put out canned meat stew. She said it still had working parts and once in awhile a group of people will start it up and make some canned stew for their groups around the area. She witnessed it once and it really got the ghouls in a tizzy! The group running the plant seemed to expect it and took care of the threat with no issues. She said next time she sees it running, she’ll come by and try to talk to them. My brain almost exploded. Other people? I begged her to please talk to them, and she just smiled and said, in time. She’s so darned cautious!
As we passed Mama Dolce’s, I saw a trio of stately brick buildings. The central building had a clock tower and I’m sure it’s the tallest building I’ve ever seen. Colleen stopped next to a burned out car. It was long and black. A limo, Colleen said. Used to drive rich men around. That’s when I noticed the immediately recognizable Vault Boy statue in the courtyard of the three buildings and the stone sign: VAULT-TEC UNIVERSITY. I looked at Colleen, and she had an almost sad smile. “Papa” I said and she nodded. This was where he worked before the war. Before the Vault. We walked up the steps and I was filled with awe. I had never known my parents outside the Vault, like Colleen had. This seemed like a more special trip now.
We passed through the campus and came upon a street that seemed to be mixed residential and businesses. Colleen told me about how this used to be such a busy area with students from VTU, as well as the local high school, businessmen and women grabbing lunch at the diners, a local brew at the pubs, coffee at the Slocum’s Joe or checking out the bookstores. Mama would bring her to meet Papa at the little diner next to campus on the nights he worked late. She said it really hit her the first time she saw it…the reality that Vault 76 is likely the only real survivors left in this world. Morgantown is pretty much a ghost town.
As we walked among Fraternity Row, where Colleen had said she had seen a Christmas tree on somebody’s balcony, we ran into our first ghouls. Apparently they had been sleeping in the street, and our presence got them to rouse and look about with curiosity. Colleen motioned me back and pulled her rifle. You could barely hear the shots leaving the barrel as one, then another, crumpled and fell back down. It was spooky seeing one up close. Knowing it was once a person like me, that now roamed aimlessly. Did they have any thoughts or memories anymore? Do they feel pain or anything? I wondered who they used to be, and felt bad that we were lucky enough to be saved and they were left to this.
Colleen called me out of my thoughts. She found the house with the tree and some Christmas lights. It was up on the second floor balcony, so we dragged some crates over from the road so she could climb up there. She then lowered the tree down to me using some rope she’d brought with her. Oh my goodness, I’d never seen anything so perfect! It must have been made of aluminum as there was no rust and the colored ornaments still looked good. We wouldn’t know if the lights worked until we got it home, but I didn’t care. It’s was beautiful.
The two of us struggled carrying the thing back to the house, but we managed. I had hoped we could check out these stores we were passing to see if there was anything useful left. She just smiled and said “next trip”. I let it go. I indeed wanted another trip!
As we passed by VTU again, I asked if Mama had worked nearby. Colleen said, no, Arktos Pharma was more southwest of Morgantown and the house. She said if I wanted, she’d take me one day, but that security robots still patrolled the building. She hadn’t been inside yet, and of course didn’t want me to until she knew it was safe. I think I rolled my eyes because she caught me and laughed. She said there’d be plenty of time for me to get my exploring done and just be patient.
When we got home, we set the tree up on the front porch and went inside to clean up. After we’d had some dinner, we strung the lights up and checked them out. After some tightening of some loose bulbs and jiggling some wires, they lit up! Colleen just stared at the colorful glow, lost in her memories of Christmases before the Vault. I got up, kissed her head, and left her there with her thoughts. It had been a long day, so I headed up to bed. What a perfect Christmas present.
More soon, Mags

A Bridge, a Remarkable Bridge
In between waters frozen or boiling, a bridge, a remarkable bridge that’s hidden, but it spans over its own handwritten manuscript, over its own suspicion of its ability to pilfer parasols from pregnant women, with pregnancy of a question conveyed on the back of a mule impelled to accomplish the mission that is to elongate or alter gardens into alcoves where children lend their curls to waves, because waves are as mannered as God’s yawning, like the games of gods, like the nautilus covering a village with its dice-thrown, half-scored inflection, and of animals crossing the bridge with the latest Edison safety bulb. The lightbulb, happily, blows out, and onto the other side of the worker’s face, I entertain myself by placing pins, for he was one of my loveliest friends and I secretly envied him. A bridge, a remarkable bridge that’s hidden, bridge that was a byway for drunks who claimed they required a diet of cement, while, lion-hearted, the poor cement surrendered its riches as depicted by a miniaturist because, mind you, on Thursdays, bridges busy themselves as crossings for deposed kings unable to forget the last chess game played between a whippet whose microcephalia is reiterated and a great wall that crumbles like a cow’s skeleton seen through a skylight, geometrical and Mediterranean. Led by astronomical numbers of ants and by a camel made of smoke, a great silver shark must now cross the bridge, in point of fact it’s only three million ants that in a momentous hernia-producing buoy lift the silver shark at midnight across the bridge as if it were another ousted king. A bridge, a remarkable bridge, hence it’s hidden, honey-colored armature, maybe it’s the Sicilian vespers painted on a small poster painted also with a great crash of water when it all ends in the saline silver we have to cross despite the silent swollen armies that have laid siege to the city without silence because they know I’m there and I saunter and I see my wounded head and the immutable squadrons exclaim: It’s a beating drum, We lost my fiancée’s favorite flag, I’d like tonight to drift into sleep poking holes in my sheets. Remarkable bridge, my mind’s matter, and the drumrolls nearing closer to home, thereafter I don’t know what happened, but it’s midnight now, and I’m crossing what my heart feels is a remarkable bridge. But the back of the remarkable bridge can’t hear what I’m saying: that I was never able to feel hunger for since I was blinded I’ve placed in the middle of my bedroom a great silver shark from which, meticulously, I break off pieces I roll into the shape of a flute that the rain amuses, defines, and congregates. But my nostalgia is endless, because such nourishment endures a stern eternity, and it’s likely hunger and jealousy can only replace the great silver shark I’ve set at the center of my room. But no hunger, no jealousy, not this animal, a favorite of Lautréamont, ought to cross alone and conceited over the remarkable bridge, because the goats of noble Hellenic descent displayed their flute collection at the last international exhibit, of which today an echo lingers in the nostalgic morning prone to pilgrimage, when the sea’s torso gives way to a small green bedspread and verifies its cabinet of pipes, where so many bats have been set aflame. Carolingian roses burgeoned on the edge of a crooked rod. In the fourth quarter of midnight, a cone of water formed by mules sepulchered in my garden reveals that the bridge wants to fashion such exquisite belongings. Little hands of ancient idols, absinthe infused with the rapture of high-soaring birds that mollify the part of the bridge supported over squashy cement, almost jellyfish-like. But now to salvage my head it’s time for metallic tools to be stunned mirroring the danger of drool now shaped into shellfish glazed by the acid of unpardonable kisses the morning tucks into a new change purse. Does the bridge, turning, only envelop the mistletoe and its olive-colored tenderness, or around the hump and scratched violin that grates the side of the leaking bridge? And morning’s campana can’t even transform the pink flesh of the unforgetting mollusk into dental notches of the glazed shellfish Remarkable bridge, unbridled bridge that nuzzles boiling waters, and sleep an onslaught to the flesh until it’s rendered soft and the edge of unexpected moons resounds to the end with mermaids oozing their latest seaside proclivity. A bridge, a remarkable bridge, it’s hidden, waters boiling, frozen, surging against the last defensive wall to ravish the mind, the single voice crosses the bridge again, like the blind king who, unbeknownst to him, has been deposed, and he dies mended tenderly to the allegiance of night. —José Lezama Lima, from Enemigo rumor (1941), trans. 12 50
fine soft morning F36 ½° at 9 50 and breakfast – before breakfast was over went out to Mr. Wheatley – 2nd visit to Mangnall – doing very well – pity to shoot the horse – would do for a coach-house – then with Mr. Ramsden foundry man, in the new bank, who came about the drying closet – a stone floor would not answer – should be iron, and have a fire (like a boiler fire) to itself from the room adjoining the laundry – R-‘s job would cost about £6 of which about 17/. (2/. for Wood and 15/. for labour) for the models maker then finished breakfast and A- came and sat by me – she poorly but would ride to Bouldhsaw – off about 12 and back about 5 having sent George over from B- to the Bowling iron to inquire about the iron hay racks for farm stable (late cow house) – to come on Saturday or Monday – note to this effect in answer to my message meant to have gone to H-x but had Mr. Sharpe from near Redhall with his dark brown cart horse (led by John Sunderland of the old Dumb mill beershop) price 30 guineas – heavy, gummy legged, tup-faced – must be of slow action – rather slow – but all agree a good horse – six off – S- should have asked £25 thought of setting the gray against the brown – S- asked what I valued the gray at – 27 guineas – as well or better worth that than the brown worth 30 guineas – S- seemed unwilling to leave the horse on trial – asked if he would take gray and Magnall in exchange he made no answer – I said I would think about his horse, and let him know if I thought more of him – Sunderland asked what I would take for Magnall - £10 – what was the lowest? said I might shoot him and get but a sovereign for skin and carcase but I would not sell him for that – Townend came – stood by so did we all – (Sharpe Sunderland John Booth and David B- the mason) – while T- unloosed the dressings – a terrible cut, but veins and sinews safe and the wound doing very well – T- said the horse was not worth more than a sovereign now – I said if I did not have the animal shot, T- would hear and might come again, if he liked in a few days, and we would try to bargain – I would not keep the horse – all this and a long talk with DB. (want Edward to sleep at Northgate till the Crosslands take possession) took me till after 4 – then with Robert Mann + 5 at the low fishpond – and a little with the masons – the passage into the hall re-flagged temporary 3 men at the saddle room doorstead turning to the east end of the building (towards the coach house court) and walling up rewalling up the corner of the building – much shaken before being taken down – in the stables and about till near 6 – a little while with A- she gave me ten pounds towards bill for Northgate sometime in the wine cellar getting in 4 sacks of saw dust brought from H-x the other day and left at the cellar-door – warmed myself by cellaring the stuff myself – dressed – dinner at 7 10 Mr. Jubb here (saw him) this morning just before A- went – came 2nd time (1st on Monday) to see Cookson – much better as to the pain in her side. 🌸 Heeseung - royal au, accademic competition
If anyone told you that a commoner like you would become the prince's tutor, you would have never believed it. To be the honest, you would have never believed to be evaluated as the most intelligent and erudit person in the realm either. And still, here you are looking up to where the sky is supposed to be, but instead, you see enormous towers and bright yellow flags: you reached the castle, which is where you're going to stay for the next six months or so.
You walk to the front door and as soon as you're about to bump your fist against the firm wood, the door opens. An incredible garden unfolds in front of you - how is it possible to keep one inside?
"Money makes miracles". You turn to your left where the voice comes from. The King in person. You bow as deeply as you can and keep this position while you hear his footsteps coming closer.
"Please, treat me as a peer. You have all the rights to." He puts a hand on your shoulder. You raise your head. He surely looks distinct, with perfect facial traits and soft hair, even if he is old. He should have been handsome when he was young.
He leads you by your shoulder: "We'll have time to talk to each other later, but now I want you to meet my son you will tutor".
As soon as he stops talking, you find yourself standing in front of a white door with gold decors. The king pushes the door open and a soft natural light creeps out of the slightly ajar door. He gestures you to enter.
A guy around your age is sitting in a big velvet armchair, reading a book. He raises his eyes and scrutinizes you:  "Who is this? I never requested company" and puts his nose back into the book. You freeze. How rude can this guy be?
"They are the most acculturated person in the whole realm: you should have good manners with them."
"Tsks"
This little shit. How dares?
"And they're your tutor"
"So that I can learn how to raise cows"
"You little shit!" You slap a hand on your mouth: as soon as the words left your mouth, you knew how big the mistake was.
He first wide eyes you and then, slowly, the left side of his lips rises in a smirk.
The King claps his hands: "Now that you met each other, I can leave you alone to talk about the tutoring".

🌸 Jay - fake relationship
Since when the bullies in the school had decided that you were the perfect victim for their attacks, your life had been shit. You had nothing special, you thought. There could have been so many other possible targets, even more suitable than you. You were not famous nor noticeable in any way. And you liked it that way.
But you knew why they were like that.
Everything started when one of the popular guys started spending time with you. And that guy was none other than Jay Park. Rich. Pretty. Nice style.
One could have fallen very easly: you were on the verge of falling for him every single day you spent together.
"Y/n! Get your head out of the clouds! How do you answer question 4B?" Right. You were here to teach him history. Nothing else. You nod.
"I'm sorry, I'm focused now".
"When you're done staring, we can study". You throw him a pen and he giggles while you feel your face become hot and you hope he cannot see any redness from the outside.
Your sessions are always filled with laughter and chats, but outside, you two are basically strangers. No one has ever seen the two of you together at school nor out of school. No one knows you know each other.
Today your friends are not even at school and you mentally prepare yourself to a lonely day in this hell while you step on the stairs. The corridors are full of noisy students.
You mentally pray you go unnoticed while you walk across THE group.
But nothing's ever easy in your life, is it?
"Here you are, finally" you keep your head low "Had fun dreaming 'bout Jay the whole weekend?" You're not going to answer, not this time.
"Sure enough Y/n was dreaming about me. They were with me."
Everything stops around you and all eyes are on him. He's calm and he has his eyes fixated on you. He walks straight to you and puts his arm around your shoulder, pulling you to him. You gasp at the closeness and his eyes are unsteady. You feel his heart beat fast against your hands. Your heart beats even faster. Everyone's eyes are still on you two.
And then, he kisses you.
Tumblr media
🌸 Jake - first love
You walk through the museum alone. It's a modern art museum you had always wanted to visit, but none of your friends wanted to go with you so you ended up coming here alone. It's not the first time. All of your friends were in a relationship and obviously they had to limit their time with you. Young and beautiful, they had someone to share their pretty self with. Instead, you feel like you're wasting your time alone. What will you tell your grandchildren about your youth? That you were studying all day? You shake your head: it's not the best moment to think about this. You move on to the next glass pannel that contains a small notebook, something that looks like a diary. 'Dedicated to all those who have never been in love'.
"Dedicated to me" you say out aloud.
"To me as well". You turn around while you feel your cheeks become red. This is embarassing.
"Excuse me?"
"This poem. It's dedicated to me as well". He is tall, with a warm gaze and soft blonde locks. And he looks around twenty.
"You've never been in love either?" You ask, a bit weirded out. He is incredibly pretty and speaks softly: it's not possible he has never been in a relationship.
"Nope, and I'm even alone here" he smiles with his eyes and puts a hand in his locks, looking away.
You stay in silence for a long, embarassing moment. And then, you feel your lips moving: "Would you like to visit the museum with me then?"
He reverts his eyes back at you again and seems like thinking for a moment. And then, he nods happily.
It's monday and you have class. You're already late and running to class. As soon as you enter, you sit down to the first empty seat you find. The teacher is not there yet.
"Ehi, museum dude!" You turn around. He's there, smiling at you. You smile back at him and you know from that very moment that he's going to be more than an acquitance for you.
"Wait, you called me dude!?"
Tumblr media
🌸 Sunghoon - popular boy / secret relationship
Everyone knows him and you would have as well. He is the most famous student in the most èlite school of the city.
He's not famous for being the captain of a sport team or pretty or rich. Surely he is stunning, but the reason why he is so famous is that he is the best student in the whole school. He's he one helping the new students settle in and the one who organizes all the events at school. He is the teacher's favourite and the one all universities try to get. He always has a soft smile on his lips and perfectly clean clothes and hair.
Even his calligraphy is impeccable.
He has a perfect conduct and never broke a rule in his whole academic carreer since kindergarten. He is in charge of making other respect the rules. And the most important rule ever is that having a relationship with any student in the school or outside is absolutely not allowed. Those who broke that rule have been banned from their families. It's cruel, but it's fair, they think. This school's not the place to think about boyfriends or girlfriends and stuff: you're paying a fee to be presented to society in the best way ever. A relationship here could destroy your future.
And his future seems to be untouchable. Is it? How could a relationship with you destroy his future? You don't want to know.
And sneaking outside the classroom during lessons is probably not the safest way to keep your relationship secret.
You both run and run and run: no lessons anymore for you two. At the end you stop and collapse against a tree, laughing and trying to catch your breath.
He hugs you as tough as he can and drops with you on the soft grass. You get out of his grip and look at him. His pretty eyes.
How could anyone want to gatekeep the youth from the love it deserves?
Maybe I could even decide to write real fics out of them keke.

CHOICE 1: DIVINERS
The sun is ablaze. Sometimes I walk alone by the city walls, and the soldiers on the ramparts wave to me. The public gardens have browned, and the ground is dry and cracked. I sweat, and for a moment my shirt sticks where my back is wet. Momma worries that soon there will be no water, and what will we do then?  There are no clouds in the sky. Everyone can see that.
When we go together to see the chariots race—Momma, Papa, and I—we are mobbed by people. Soldiers with spears hold them back. But Papa wants to talk to the people; they are the farmers and the fishermen of our city. They call to Papa: “What about the water?”
“How can I know when the rain will fall?” he answers. “I’m the mayor, not a god.”
Momma can only listen, smile, nod. She speaks comforting words.
From our house, where the leaves have unseasonably fallen, we can see the banks of the river, or, at least where the river used to be. A mile wide it was, and the docks were bustling with ships bringing nice things from far away. I liked to see the sails, and the ships’ colorful flags and pennants. I liked when crates of oranges were delivered to our house.
From the fisherman’s harbor, a fleet of boats worked the river, and others traveled out into the sea. Now the pilings of the navy pier—and the wall around the city—are hundreds of feet from the water. Papa worries that the wall won’t protect us when the orcs come back.
The soldiers bring water from the river in canteen carts drawn by oxen. The water is heavy. At the end of the day, fishermen pull their boats from the channel to rest amid the dried cattails and marsh grass. The catch is light. With little water for livestock, the market overflows with pigs and cows for slaughter. Farmers’ crops rust in dry fields.
The Council dragged their feet when Papa proposed to dam the river, but now workmen on barges hurry to sink a barrier across the narrow channel. A reservoir. Momma worries it will be too little, too late.
“Uta Hagen pulls water from the air,” yells a man in a silver sash. “I’ve seen her do it.”
“Uta Hagen is a witch,” says my father.
“She a diviner!” yells the man. “She can save us.”
Everyone goes to watch the chariot races on the Flats. Papa can never sit through the races, interrupted as he is by his advisors and generals, by people delivering messages. Today a messenger has come with a crate. Someone said there was a cactus in the crate. I would rather have oranges.
Adorned in colorful gems and streamers, the chariots race around the track. The horses’ legs pump and their sides heave as they are pressed onward by their drivers. The Council makes sure there is water for the horses.
Meer Greemar is the greatest chariot racer ever, just ask around. I have met him before, with Papa. I would like to bet my money on him. There was a time when soldiers bet gold on the races, or jewels from the mines of the orcs. Now a canteen of water is the bounty.
At the Flats, there is plenty of food, there is the smell of meat cooking over open coals. At the Flats, everyone can eat, everyone can cheer for their favorite racer, everyone can forget about the worries of water and war. Everyone can, for now.
