One if not the most remarkable school building is located in Düsseldorf’s Golzheim district: Paul Schneider-Esleben’s Rolandschule, an elementary school built between 1959 and 1961 that closely resembles Mies van der Rohe’s IIT campus buildings. But it isn’t the architecture alone that makes the school stand out but also the progressive art in architecture it contains. Schneider-Esleben, very familiar with contemporary art and a frequent visitor of art events in Düsseldorf, commissioned the ZERO artists Heinz Mack, Otto Piene and Günter Uecker as well as the young Joseph Beuys to develop artworks for the school. Knowing that the reactionary Düsseldorf authorities wouldn’t approve of these the architect kept the expenses related to the artworks hidden by declaring them building material. Unfortunately shortly after the opening an accident occurred that brought the authorities to the scene who didn’t approve of the artworks primarily for safety reasons but surely also because of their modern formal language and the fact that they required the children to actively use and interact with them. Beyond that Schneider-Esleben had his employee Wolfgang Döring buy a number of graphics by contemporary artists.
In her dissertation Ina Scheffler examined the unique interplay of art and architecture at the Rolandschule, recounts its genesis and explains why fundamentally differs from numerous paradigms in postwar school architecture: „Polarisierung und Neubeginn - ZERO-Kunst in einem Grundschulbau als Zeichen der Zeitenwende der Nachkriegszeit“, published in 2020 by Athena Verlag, contextualizes architecture and art of the school within postwar Germany and demonstrates that through the abstract nature of the art a completely different approach is being followed. Instead of the commonly used figurative sculptures and sgraffiti architect and artists introduced abstract, interactive but no less stimulating artworks to the children, an empowering move away from the usual patronization.
Ina Scheffler’s book is a highly readable and thorough examination of this lesser-known but truly revolutionary building. Highly recommended!

One Plaza Landmark in Düsseldorf
4 Jun 2022
Design: HPP Architects
Location: Düsseldorf, Germany
Photos: HPP Architects / MOMENI Group, Visualisation: Brick
One Plaza, Germany
Situated at the Kennedydamm, entrance to Düsseldorf’s inner city, this building, together with the L’Oréal Germany headquarters and the vertical campus Eclipse, will add another impressive element designed by HPP Architects to the urban skyline. The mixed-use building with approx. 45,000 sqm of gross floor area is to be realised for the MOMENI Group and, alongside its function as an office building, will also provide space for special uses, gastronomy and local services. With its characteristic facade, generous enclosed outside spaces, usable roof gardens and modern workplaces, One Plaza stands for identity, sustainability and flexibility.
Organised by Archivibe in collaboration with Valcucine, the installation “LE3DERS” at Milan Design Week 2022 shows the 3D models of LEED-certified buildings as an augmented reality exhibition through an Instagram filter. With its aspiration for LEED Gold certification and its conception via a 3D model as a digital twin, the ONE PLAZA is part of this group of projects by internationally renowned architecture practices.
The building composition, consisting of three wings grouped around a central inner courtyard area, will create a sculptural entity with distinctive architecture and high recognition value. The dynamic design language is applied consistently across all the dimensions of the building, including the facade.
The two-storey elevation at each corner opens up ONE PLAZA on every side. Three generous entrance points are created which connect the ground floor area with the surrounding district. At the same time the height offset at the upper levels of the facade creates a striking roof landscape that offers protection from the wind for office tenants enjoying the gardens. “The diagonal lines of the curtain facade with its vertical, cleverly folded aluminium panels underlines the dynamism and lightness of the whole building and creates an intriguing play of light and shadow”, explains Volker Weuthen, HPP’s Senior Partner responsible for the project.
The building offers users a high degree of flexibility and the opportunity to implement every possible office concept from open plan to a cellular or combi office design. The permanent workplaces are arranged close to the facade. And in addition, in the central zones there are communicative working environments for flexible use with a range of options for employees. The enclosed courtyard serves as an internal meeting place, a central green lung, which, together with the roof gardens, increases the ecological quality of the building and creates a link to the open spaces of the surrounding area.
The fluent and naturalistic design of the open spaces is in powerful contrast to the sharp-cornered and highly compacted building design. Inspired by the leitmotif of “forest home”, the greening of the outdoor spaces, courtyard, roof terraces and sloping roof areas creates an urban oasis that lends added value to the working environment of users as well as increasing the urban quality of life of the neighbourhood. The additional green areas will have a positive impact on air quality, microclimate, heat and noise pollution, as well as comfort and well-being.
Besides these measures, many other green building criteria are fulfilled, so that ONE PLAZA is aiming to obtain both LEED Gold and Wired Score Platinum certification. Sustainable mobility is supported not only by the very good links to the public transport network, but also by electric charging stations and the unusually high number of 180 bike parking spaces, which are also available for the public to use.
The existing building on the developed site was already dismantled last year. Work on the new construction will start in August 2022, completion is scheduled for the first quarter of 2025.

Theodor Champion, February 5, 1887 in Oberkassel, today a district of Düsseldorf - 1952 Zell an der Mosel, German painter.
He first studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1906, then after just one year transferred to the art school in Weimar, where he acquired a Neo-Impressionist style of painting.
Champion did not paint his pictures in the studio, but directly in nature. For this purpose, he had prepared his painting ground in advance. He did not portray landscapes, but composed his pictures from different motifs in nature.
In 1919 Champion was one of the founding members of the artists' association Das Junge Rheinland. Around 1920 Champion increasingly changed his style in the direction of New Objectivity. Thematically, he was primarily concerned with the urban landscape at this time. In 1921 he had a solo exhibition at the Alfred Flechtheim Gallery in Düsseldorf.
In 1924 he became a member of the "Rhine Group" and in 1928 he was among the members of the "Rhenish Secession".
In the course of the 1920s, Champion's painting style became increasingly refined and the picture formats smaller. An old-master-like painting technique, which he pursued until his late work, determined his work from then on.
By the end of the 1920s, he was preoccupied with German Romanticism of the early 19th century, especially with motifs of longing as found in the painting of Caspar David Friedrich. This engagement with German Romanticism had arisen out of a backlash against Neue Sachlichkeit and was received as "New Romanticism" by the artists' group Die Sieben, which Champion had co-founded in 1932.

DÜSSELDORF Industrial Exposition Wax Seal, 1902
The Dusseldorf Industrial and Commercial Exposition, of Rhineland, Westphalia and neighboring districts, combined with a German National Art Exhibition was held in Dusseldorf from May 1st, 1902 until October 20th, 1902. It was visited by Crown Prince Wilhelm of Germany, the Siamese Crown Prince Vajiravudh, and various other relevant to the time monarchists of the surrounding countries. It was meant to be their own version of the world exhibition held in Paris two years earlier. Their transportation feature of the time was a 3 mile electric railway that ran the grounds. Of the around 2800 fixtures there were some of the halls dedicated to racism and xenofetishism, machinery, and a lot of beer.
And here's a link to a 1902 Newspaper that writes about the exhibition and says the visiting crown prince has a weak chin.
