Worst soundtrack / weirdest song choice in a BL

I think some of the background music choices in Love in the Air/Wedding Plan were odd, mostly during SkyPrapai scenes. I think in one scene Itsy Bitsy Spider was playing and in their wedding scene some random ass old song was playing too. And I can't remember which BL it was where a Christmas Song kept playing in the background during random scenes.

Most cringe-inducing line (cute)

Pleum to Kevin: "You're lovely, trust me on that. If you weren't lovely I wouldn't fall for you from the first time we met." The cringe the cheese and he was always saying cheesy stuff like that to Kevin but I ate it up because he was sincere and so up front. We stan.

Most cringe-inducing line (actually bad)

Rain to Payu: "If you don't stop being angry you're going to scare your wifey." I hate how attached MAME is to the "wifey" title for her characters. That scene was cute but that line is just ugh. And the subbers like to translate it as "Darling" but we all know the truth.

Most stupid decision made by a character

Yu Xi Gu leaving to go buy salt for that stupid soup. (History 3: Make Our Days Count)

Worst plot line

Whatever the fuck the step brothers in History 4 had going on. I could honestly move past them being step brothers if every single thing else about their storyline was not so messed up. (History 4: Close to You)

The most problematic show you’ve watched

1000% TharnType and I completely own that shit. TT was a hot ass toxic mess and I ate up every single bit of it.

A show people love but you find bad

Dark Blue and Moonlight. I just hated every single thing about that series. I hated the stupid cheating plot. I hated both of the main guys. Hated the acting. But when that shit came out I remember that people just LOVED it.

A show people find bad but you will defend

En of Love: Tossara. People found Tossara boring and I just loved their lil series. I love Gun and Bar and sure the acting was a little stiff but they gave me such a warm and cozy vibe. They were honest with each other and had relevant conversations and were mostly unproblematic.

A show that is just objectively bad but you enjoyed it

The Best Twins. Like the plot made no sense and depending on which couple was on screen it felt like 3 series in one and some of the acting was not good but it was a funny lil series that featured a ton of our faves before they were our faves. Also fucking THOR??? He's a gem.

A bad show that you kept watching because you were intrigued/fascinated

History: Obsessed, because what the fuck even was that? I had to see how they made it out to the end.

A bad show that you kept watching because you were horny

Waterboyy...Earth looked really, really hot in that one, but my gawd I would never, ever watch that series again. Between them revoking that one girl's lesbian card, the cheating, the sexual assault, and Waii's daddy getting together with Waii's best friend I couldn't stomach it. Highkey glad EarthNew didn't last.

A bad show that you kept watching because of that one character

My Gear and Your Gown. That character actually being the ship PureFolk, because otherwise that series was a total snooze fest.

A bad show that you would still recommend

My Engineer. The series was quite literally a mess and almost felt like a fever dream with it's wacky characters and random happenings with the plot (also some people didn't like the main couple) but the series is so much fun and we were given a gem of a ship with RamKing/PerthLay. It's just a fun series.

The character that ruined a show the most

Fucking Wai in Bad Buddy. I just couldn't stand him outing his own best friend to the whole school. That was so fucking dirty and Pran was still trying to apologize??????? I almost dropped the series after that because I knew he would never apologize and still everything would be forgiven.

Most awful character that you hated

Tita Susan from Gameboys the Movie/Gameboy S2. Plern Pleng from Together with Me. San from TharnType. Lee So Hee from Light on Me. Fighter's daddy.

Most awful character that you loved

Type from TharnType. Ritsu from The End of the World With You.

A character that wasn’t awful but that you just don’t like

Ben from Never Let Me Go. Dome from Ingredients.

currently watching

KinnPorsche: Actually, I had no intention of watching this. After the first two episodes I was still very unsure, there was just too much slapstick. But then...wow...it blew me away. It's just so good! And everything is somehow represented: violence, university bl, adult bl, crime, a bit of chaos and humour, sadism, torture. an electrokink, love, mafia, sex and a lot of weird, but lovable characters.

Check Out: The first episode was quite a good insight into the characters. What probably bothers many is that it was hyped as this very sex-filled, hot series and then there was hardly anything in the first episode...how bad! I think it's good that I can get to know some of the characters beforehand and understand their relationships.

Mama Gogo: I thought the trailer was great! And the first episode was also very promising. Not yet as cringe-worthy as I feared, but that will surely come.

My Secret Love: Oh my God! It's so much fun to watch the series! Earth and Fluk are performing so well! I just love them together and I'm so excited for the rest of the series! This is something that is very good for me and just makes me smile.

Sky in your Heart: I don't mind us rushing through it a bit, but I understand everyone who couldn't see the kiss coming after all the talking about the ex, the puking and crying. I'm scared about the next five episodes, but so far I just love Fah and his heart eyes! And Prince makes me want to pinch his cheek all the time, he's so cute. I'm really enjoying the series.

To My Star 2: Pain...the first four episodes were pure pain and I'm so scared of the rest, after the cliffhanger of episode 4...I'm so confused! But I love it?

Plus & Minus: It's all so cute and then depressing and then hilariously sad and now we're on the last episode. I enjoyed the rollercoaster ride despite the accidental kisses.

Senpai, Danjite Koidewa!: An interesting concept of the structure of the story. Kaneda is huggable cute and together they are also just cute. I'm curious to see what else is to come.

Love Mechanics: Since my Saturday isn't full enough yet, I'll also add this series to my watch list. The trailer looked so promising!

Dark Blue and Moonlight: Phew...the series doesn't make it easy for me. Everybody is cheating on everybody with everybody...I don't have a problem with that in general in fiction, but the way and the presentation and the dialogues!!!! I hate to dnf things, so I'll probably keep watching, but I won't enjoy it!

rewatching

Basically, I rarely rewatch entire series, just the episodes or parts or storylines that I liked best. Except for my absolute favourites! Then I can sometimes binge watch the whole thing.

At the moment I'm checking in on "Be loved in House: I do" every now and then (Shi Lei + Jin Yu Zhen are my current favourites).

But most of the times I've been more in the mood for new distractions and not so much for the old familiar ones.

looking forward to

Too many things: Vice Versa, Unforgotten Nights, The Eclipse, Moonlight Chicken, Fahlanruk, Even Sun Series, Coffee Melody, Big Dragon, Between Us, Bed Friend. And for 2023 I'm waiting for Light, the series adaptation of the short film of the same name from 2021.

MY TOP BL’S OF 2019 AND EARLIER

I decided to group all of the BL series I've watched from 2019 and prior together because there simply weren't enough. I decided just to go with 10 for this list cuz there were nowhere near enough series as there were for the other years. I love that BL series have really taken off and improved every single year! I just have so much fun watching them and I'm glad others feel the same.

1. TharnType [Thai] - Sexiest bl of all time? Possibly. At least in 2019 haha. A few others have risen to it's level now, but the first time I saw this it really blew me away. Yes, there are some major problematic elements in this series but imo mewgulfs chemistry and the drama more than makes up for it.

2. History 1-3 [Taiwan] - This is a fun series and definitely the best for Taiwan imo. I love that each series is so different from the others. My personal favorite is season 3, I loved both seasons that year. But I've found enjoyable things about all of them. I also love that Taiwan has a good mix of intimate scenes and moments but also longer episodes and different storylines. Just wish we had more from them.

3. Until We Meet Again [Thai] - This drama definitely has really slow and cheesey moments and I am not sure the supernatural storyline was for me but I still had a great time watching. The three pairings were all so different from one another. I like that it had a deeper storyline as well. Definitely memorable.

4. Love By Chance [Thai] - This is one of the "older" thai bl's but has such a unique flair to it and there's a very specific charm that drew me in. It was just well done and cute.

5. The Boy Next Door [Korean] - This was a series I just recently watched and it was very fun and cute. Can def. be seen as a "bromance" in parts but it still had romantic undertones. Not a lot of "intimate" moments here or anything and defintely more of a comedy but I liked how different it was and it was really easy to watch.

6. 3 Will Be Free [Thai] - The most "poly" bl series we've gotten yet. I loved the focus on all three of the mains and relationship between the three of them. I think the show could have gone a bit deeper with it, but I still loved watching this show and I liked the thriller sort of aspect to it, it was different.

7. Theory of Love [Thai] - For me this one started out really good and then got quite a bit draggy near the middle. When it switched POV'S I wasn't as into it and there was way too much crying and drama lmao. But, for a sort of trashy, classic, Thai bl series, it fits the bil.

8. Dark Blue and Moonlight [Thai] - This BL was a HOT MESS from start to finish. A bit odd and all over the place, yet somehow, I still really enjoyed watching it. It was kinda like a car crash you couldn't look away from lmao.

9. Kiss Me Series [Thai] - TBH I don't remember this series all that much and should prob. rewatch it at some point, but it's another fun classic thai bl series. I mostly skimmed it for TayNew tbh.

10. He’s Coming to Me [Thai] - Ghost storylines aren't really my thing but I did enjoy this series and I thought the chemistry between Singto and Ohm was sweet and the storyline was pretty unique.

Honorary Mentions:

Thai: Together With Me (Don't ermember much of this but gotta love MaxTul), WaterBoyy (My first "bl" experience with New+Earth wayyy back before I ever even knew what BL was), Sotus (Didn't enjoy this one as much as other people but it was okay.)

Taiwan: Red Balloon (Nice Taiwanese series, nothing super outstanding but decent.)

ANTI: ADDICTED. I cant tolerate the "love" this series gets... it depicts sexual assault in a romantic light. It's an absolute NO for me.

okay mermaid's tale spoilers in this one kinda so look away if you haven't seen it yet and this one is more of a rejection of canon than a headcanon but the mermaid sisters, especially crimson coral, were NOT all like "well at least she got the strength she wanted to protect the seas now she'll be okay" they were utterly devastated at what white pearl cookie had become barely resembling the kind mermaid she once was, crimson coral sometimes contemplates swimming over there to see her again but she has to keep the other tearcrown residents safe (they didn't seem nearly as fazed as they should've been imo)

Discover a colourful world where an unlucky guy and a fortunate guy balance each other out, while the unlucky guy is a wonderful anime character come to life, full of bubbly energy and inward dialogue directed outward, and the fortunate guy is a reserved and quiet young man who reminds me a hell of a lot of Jungkook from BTS

– I really enjoy this one, it is full of life and the story is sweet.

Discover how two best friends, who have known each other since childhood, have never spent a moment without the other, kiss when they drunkenly fall onto each other and finally told each other about their feelings and now are a cute couple with problems...alongside there is a gooey side couple who go from zero to a hundred in a matter of moments – still kind of intrigued with the main couple, not the side dish

Discover a long-term relationship where kisses are apparently not normal and you still have to be shy about it after three years of dating - I have made it to episode two after one month and I still think it is bad.

Discover how the cool and the reasonable, who of course can't stand each other, are forced to form a BL Couple, only to find out that maybe they do like each other and everything is topped with accidental kisses and silly pranks. And we have a secret but established couple, which is nice to see.

Star and Sky: Sky in your heart (5/8)

Discover a setting and a story reminiscent of A tale of thousand stars, but a little different and with great chemistry between the two protagonists so far - Prince is just pure sugar.

Discover heartbreak and pain!

History 3: Trapped (10/10)

Discover a world where a cop can spy on a mafia boss without being killed by him, even become his bodyguard, and in the end they fell in love with each other. I am delighted.

Discover when the worlds of two people collide and we can watch them falling in love with each other while one side couple is really cute and the other I don't really understand, yet.

Best Queer TTRPGS

Blue Rose is a long-time love of mine. From its understanding of gender to how it views relationships, this world is queer through and through. Blue Rose uses the AGE system and is well equipped for epic fantasy tales.

Girl By Moonlight: a relative newcomer on the scene, Girl By Moonlight was published earlier this year by Evil Hat Productions. The game actively encourages queer themes, such as the exploration of gender identity and triumph of love over an uncaring world (while not essentially queer, the latter theme is very relatable to many of us!)

Girl By Moonlight uses the Forged in the Dark system, which originated with the popular Blades in the Dark.

Thirsty Sword Lesbians is a by now famous ttrpg Powered by the Apocalypse. Thirsty is a celebration of queer culture, sometimes joyful, sometimes angsty, always engrossing. Its robust social mechanics make it an excellent alternative to dungeon crawlers for those looking for a roleplay heavy gaming experience.

Lichcraft is a rules-lite game about becoming an immortal lich to live long enough to receive gender-affirming healthcare from an increasingly long waitlist. The art is gorgeous and the game cathartic. Also, who doesn't love liches?

Queer Actual Plays

High Rollers: a popular British Dungeons and Dragons actual play with a genderfluid DM, and multiple queer players. Their most recently completed campaign, Aerois, contained multiple queer characters and relationships.

Transplanar: an all trans, bipoc-led production. You may like to start with Godkiller: at sixteen episodes, it's the perfect length to get a feeling for this tale's vibe and storytelling style.
