future st characters’ jobs (and why)
kids:
dustin — middle school science teacher. i think he’d want to take after mr. clarke, and he’s the one that parrots his phrases more than the other kids, so i just feel like it fits. i think he’d enjoy teaching others.
lucas — nasa scientist. he has pictures of astronauts in his room, and that’s my excuse, because he just has the vibes, okay? he rides his bike to work, and he has a little “go green” sticker on the family car.
max — guidance counsellor/child therapist/social worker. something along those lines. i think she’d want to help kids that come from her kind of situation. she knows what it’s like, and she knows how they can isolate themselves, and i think she’d want to help.
mike — i think he’d go to college, get a degree, and then get a job that has nothing to do with lol. i see people having mike as a writer a lot, but i guess i just don’t see it. idk. some people are just gonna end up working in an office, and that’s okay lmao
will — artist will seems popular, and i can kinda see him as a comic book artist or something. but i also could see art as maybe something that’s more of a hobby, and it’s not his, like, career. i think about will the least of all the kids, sadly, so. i got nothing lol.
el — i think she works a lot of odd jobs. she wants to explore, and she wants to learn about the world. she dedicates herself to making jam, and she has chickens. there’s still a lot she doesn’t know, and i just don’t know if she’d settle down in one single career. actually i could kinda see her working at a museum for a bit. like a museum tour guide. she gets to have fun and learn! being cut off from the world for so long, i’d think she’d enjoy being surrounded by it.
erica — politician. she likes lying to people and commanding rooms lmao. i don’t think she’d be, like, president, but more just a small town mayor or something.
teens:
nancy — private investigator. i know that people think she’ll stick with journalist for the rest of her life, but i think she’d start to chafe against the control, and she’d want to do her own work and help people. she’s going through her murray era. but she’s less of a freak lmao
steve — stay at home dad <3 no but seriously, there’s a lot i could see with steve, but little league coach steve is very special to me. he gets to do something sporty, and work with kids
robin — i think she (and steve) work a lot of different jobs, and really jump around and have fun with it, and explore what they want to do. in the end, i think robin would enjoy a job where she can travel, and put all her language skills to good use.
jonathan — photographer. it’s the obvious one, but i think he’d enjoy freelance photography. he’d get to travel a little, and have some space from his family lmao.
argyle — i want to include argyle. but we really know nothing about him 💔 maybe a botanist or something lmao
vickie — i know she’s only a side character, but i don’t care <3 i’ll always be in love with truck girl vickie, so her as a mechanic is fun to me.

Dustin has been waiting eagerly to get his hands on a copy of the next book in the new fantasy series he's started reading.
It's definitely not a popular series. It's clever and confusing and very very long, and it's written by a niche, mostly-unknown British author with a tiny but enthusiastic cult following, and so, despite Dustin's loud and very persuasive arguments, not a single bookstore has shown any interest in stocking it, leaving poor Dustin with no choice but to rely on the library ordering it in.
And he's been waiting. For months.
He's been checking in so often that he's pretty sure the librarian wasn't joking when she threatened him with a restraining order.
But finally, finally, the blessed day is here.
Except it turns out to be more like a cursed day. Because when Dustin turns up, practically vibrating with excitement, he finds that the book, the one single book, his book, has already been snapped up.
By a Mr. B. Hargrove.
Because it turns out that reservations mean absolutely nothing to the librarians of Hawkins, especially when weighed against Dustin's immense backlog of late fees and Billy's twinkling eyes and charming smile...
(And oh, poor Steve, to be caught in between his boyfriend and his adopted little brother and their, frankly terrifying, petty squabble over this book...)
EDIT: Please please please go look at @ihni's incredible doodle of this little headcanon here 🥰❤️🥰 She captured it all so perfectly! (And added the happy ending feat. Mr. Clarke!)

Wait wait wait-
Okay so I'm obsessing over Byclair now because I find it more appealing than byler (no hate tho, we stan both) and I'm having thoughts.
(I'm also obsessing over modern stranger things au, so get settled in for this-)
- SO, number 1 Lucas is the superior boyfriend choice, right up there with Dustin. No hate on Mike, he's just got some personal growth to go through.
I think that yes, Will would come out to Lucas first, if not second after telling Dustin, and Lucas would immediately be chill and want to help him find a boyfriend.
(this is all modern au and no homophobia in this house thank you)
I can Invision party trips to the mall and Lucas being like, "What about him? He looks pretty cool." Trying his best to be supportive and helpful.
Will would just shove his shoulder lightly while laughing. He'd shake his head saying, "That's not really my type."
And now Lucas is hell bent on discovering Will's type. He studies his every interaction with every boy, listens closely when Will talks about something he likes, and even tries to pry the answer out of him.
Will won't give in to his persistent questioning, laughing at him every time or fixing him with a "Nice try, buddy." It drives Lucas up the wall, but he's relentless.
One day he's chilling with Max and El, because besties (if not polycule 👀), and Lucas his airing his grievances to them. He's going on and on about all the stuff he's learned about Will, trying to put each thing into a category that could reveal what type of partner Will is looking for, and eventually his just gives up.
He leans back into the chair he's sitting in, exasperated and annoyed. He pulls his hands dramatically down his face as he groans, "Why won't he just tell me?"
Max has to bite back her chuckle as she tries not to smile, "Maybe because you're stalking him."
El does laugh a little, and Lucas rolls his eyes. "I'm not stalking him. This is called being a good friend."
Max gives him a sarcastic nod of understanding, "Oh sorry, you're right, my bad. You're not stalking him, you're just learning every single detail about him so you can help him as a friend...right?"
El laughs softly as Lucas raises an eyebrow. He can't shake the feeling that they know something he doesn't. "What're you saying, Max? That I'm not doing all of this because I want to help my friend?"
He sounds incredulous, as if she were saying he's the worst friend, but she rolls her eyes so hard it must hurt. She stares him down, making sure his attention is on her and the words that come out of her mouth.
"I'm saying, that you're doing all of this," She dramatically waves her hands around the piles of notes collected on the table in front of him, "because you like him and want to know if he likes you too."
Her tone is obnoxiously condescending and it aggravates him. El's looking between them trying not to burst out into laughter, but ultimately fails when a moment of clarity passes through Lucas.
"Holy shit. You're right."
Max sits back with her arms crossed as El finds a way to compose herself, "Yeah, I know."
Lucas sheepishly looks at them and halfheartedly glares at El who just smiles back in return. He'd laugh at himself too if he wasn't now fixated on a new mission.
"I've gotta go." Lucas grabs his things and waves to his friends before leaving to find Will.
~
(And thanks to cellular technology, he finds that he's at the mall with Dustin and Erica. He's surprised by that last bit.)
As Lucas approaches the food court, he's grinning with all the adoration in the world when he sees the familiar head of brown hair a few feet away. He's not nervous. He swears he's not. He's just hoping for a polite rejection or reciprocation. Other than that, he feels pretty okay.
Will is the first to notice him and wave him over to the table they've sat at. He grins at Lucas and the latter tries not to swoon. He easily finds himself slipping into the seat across from Will, who's hiding his laughter from the two arguing next to them.
Dustin briefly acknowledges his appearance with a smile and a, "Hi, Lucas." Erica gives him a fast glance and a small wave before going back to defending her point of view.
Lucas can't be bothered to pay attention to their loud chattering, so he focuses his attention on Will (who's quick enough to avert his gaze before the other can catch his shameless staring). He sets his bag of notes down and smiles.
"I think I've figured it out."
Will look up at him and frowns when Lucas steals a French fry off his tray, "Figured out what?"
He smacks Lucas's hand back playfully when he reaches for another fry and laughs when he feigns injury. When Lucas stands up so does Will as if their synched in thought. Lucas casually wraps an arm around Will, heading to buy his own fries, and fights to keep a neutral look on his face, "I've figured out your type, Will."
He says it in the same way he has the last few times he's made this claim and he knows Will's next move. The brunet crosses his arms and looks sideways up to meet Lucas's eyes, "I'm sure you have."
Lucas can hear the sarcasm in Will's tone and a silent laugh rumbles through him. They're far from the order counter, way back in line, so Will places his hands on his hips and makes a face of amusement. "Out with it then."
Lucas takes his time stretching his arms out just to place them behind his back then twitching his face to give the illusion that he's some great detective, "I have deduced, my dear friend, that you have a thing for loyalty, correct?"
Will looks at him as if this is obvious, and of course it is, so Lucas continues, "You're ideal boyfriend is someone loyal, devastatingly handsome, and knowledgeable in the things you like."
Will strokes his chin in mock thought, but ends up pleasantly surprised, "By George, I think he's got it!"
Lucas doesn't hesitate to lean closer and mutter out, 'My Fair Lady', in proof that he understands Will's reference, and he grins when he's sees the tips of his ears turn pink.
Will breathes out a faint, "Yeah." Looking at Lucas in awe, he surprised at his knowledge.
Lucas, while being very pleased with himself, leans back but takes a step closer to the boy next to him. "I've also come to the conclusion that you may like someone who's taller than you, maybe even someone who's athletic. A basketball player, perhaps?"
Will bites his lip and looks a way before stealing another quick glance that, this time, Lucas catches causing the flush to spread further down his face. "Perhaps, perhaps, perhaps." He confirms and Lucas smiles wider, leaning in again to mutter 'Doris Day'.
Will let's out a shaken breath as he allows himself to smile. He looks at Lucas and bites it back down, "Anything else, detective?"
Lucas sees the flash of confidence and insecurity that flash through his brown eyes, and he thinks he must look the same. He gives one glance at the people around him and decides he doesn't care about what anyone might think as he steps closer to Will, now fully in his personal space. Will doesn't back away, he doesn't push Lucas off of him when his hands find his waist.
"I think, you're type..." His voice is barely there, the noise of the food court not helping, but he knows Will hears him. Taking one final breath to regain his emotional strength, he finishes, "...is me."
His eyes subconsciously close in preparation for rejection, his whole body tense, then arms fall around his shoulders and he's pulled into the tightest hug. He relaxes as Will looks up at him and laughs, "You finally got it right."
Lucas holds him close as they both laugh, content and happy.
