how c.ai works and why it's unethical
Okay, since the AI discourse is happening again, I want to make this very clear, because a few weeks ago I had to explain to a (well meaning) person in the community how AI works. I'm going to be addressing people who are maybe younger or aren't familiar with the latest type of "AI", not people who purposely devalue the work of creatives and/or are shills.
The name "Artificial Intelligence" is a bit misleading when it comes to things like AI chatbots. When you think of AI, you think of a robot, and you might think that by making a chatbot you're simply programming a robot to talk about something you want them to talk about, and it's similar to an rp partner. But with current technology, that's not how AI works. For a breakdown on how AI is programmed, CGP grey made a great video about this several years ago (he updated the title and thumbnail recently)
youtube
I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend you watch this because CGP Grey is good at explaining, but the tl;dr for this post is this: bots are made with a metric shit-ton of data. In C.AI's case, the data is writing. Stolen writing, usually scraped fanfiction.
How do we know chatbots are stealing from fanfiction writers? It knows what omegaverse is [SOURCE] (it's a Wired article, put it in incognito mode if it won't let you read it), and when a Reddit user asked a chatbot to write a story about "Steve", it automatically wrote about characters named "Bucky" and "Tony" [SOURCE].
I also said this in the tags of a previous reblog, but when you're talking to C.AI bots, it's also taking your writing and using it in its algorithm: which seems fine until you realize 1. They're using your work uncredited 2. It's not staying private, they're using your work to make their service better, a service they're trying to make money off of.
"But Bucca," you might say. "Human writers work like that too. We read books and other fanfictions and that's how we come up with material for roleplay or fanfiction."
Well, what's the difference between plagiarism and original writing? The answer is that plagiarism is taking what someone else has made and simply editing it or mixing it up to look original. You didn't do any thinking yourself. C.AI doesn't "think" because it's not a brain, it takes all the fanfiction it was taught on, mixes it up with whatever topic you've given it, and generates a response like in old-timey mysteries where somebody cuts a bunch of letters out of magazines and pastes them together to write a letter.
(And might I remind you, people can't monetize their fanfiction the way C.AI is trying to monetize itself. Authors are very lax about fanfiction nowadays: we've come a long way since the Anne Rice days of terror. But this issue is cropping back up again with BookTok complaining that they can't pay someone else for bound copies of fanfiction. Don't do that either.)
Bottom line, here are the problems with using things like C.AI:
It is using material it doesn't have permission to use and doesn't credit anybody. Not only is it ethically wrong, but AI is already beginning to contend with copyright issues.
C.AI sucks at its job anyway. It's not good at basic story structure like building tension, and can't even remember things you've told it. I've also seen many instances of bots saying triggering or disgusting things that deeply upset the user. You don't get that with properly trigger tagged fanworks.
Your work and your time put into the app can be taken away from you at any moment and used to make money for someone else. I can't tell you how many times I've seen people who use AI panic about accidentally deleting a bot that they spent hours conversing with. Your time and effort is so much more stable and well-preserved if you wrote a fanfiction or roleplayed with someone and saved the chatlogs. The company that owns and runs C.AI can not only use whatever you've written as they see fit, they can take your shit away on a whim, either on purpose or by accident due to the nature of the Internet.
DON'T USE C.AI, OR AT THE VERY BARE MINIMUM DO NOT DO THE AI'S WORK FOR IT BY STEALING OTHER PEOPLES' WORK TO PUT INTO IT. Writing fanfiction is a communal labor of love. We share it with each other for free for the love of the original work and ideas we share. Not only can AI not replicate this, but it shouldn't.
(also, this goes without saying, but this entire post also applies to ai art)

Hello TBSkyen, I have a question for you. I myself am a person who's interested in making videos about art and posting them on youtube but have heard pretty much every youtuber I watch complain about youtube's unfair copyright system. So I would like to ask, how do you typically deal with that? What do I need to do to decrease the chance of a video getting claimed/struck? I know you don't have all the answers but I would like to hear the opinion of someone who has had to deal with this.
*deep breath born from long history of frustration*
Okay, so number one, you can't protect yourself fully from that. Anyone can file a copyright claim on anything you upload for any reason, they don't have to have evidence that they own the work being claimed, and all of the onus is on you to prove you didn't commit infringement by disputing the claims being made.
Which sucks.
It's a very frustrating thing to deal with, and it can make it nearly impossible to discuss certain properties or media because the owners (or a bunch of shitty grifters abusing the copyright system) will strike and claim anything and everything they can possibly identify.
Having said that, there are some tips and tricks. First, understand the principle of Fair Use (which is American law, and which is usually what you have to deal with on YouTube, but not always), which Casey Fiesler has a good video primer about here:
youtube
The broad strokes are that you can use as much as is needed to make a transformative point and then no more than that. The spirit of the law is that you can't use Fair Use to simply repost and profit off of other people's work, and the reality of how it's enforced is that bots scan YouTube for instances of videos using Too Much of the media they're protecting, and claim it as infringement.
So. If you're discussing any kind of video media - film, TV, animation, etc. - use clips of no more than 5-8 seconds of continuous footage, and do not use the original audio of the show unless it is necessary. You can sometimes get away with longer stretches of footage, but anything over 10 seconds is just begging for an automated copyright claim.
Shrink the footage down on screen and put a frame around it so it doesn't take up the entire screen, edit something on top of the footage like animations and other edits that transform the footage, maybe slow the footage down to a lower speed so that your video can't be construed as a meaningful replacement for watching the original media.
If you're discussing static art - comics, paintings, etc. - make sure to double check the copyright status on them, and keep in mind the principle of using what is needed to make a point and no more than that. If you discuss a manga or comic, be careful about simply showing whole pages unaltered on screen if it's not necessary. Show the panels or dialogue as you discuss it, but don't put whole pages or issues or chapters up on screen in sequence.
There are other tips and tricks and guidelines and hacks also, but if you're discussing any popular form of media you do have to be ready to have to fight a ton of spurious copyright claims on anything you do, especially if it gets views and becomes popular. It's a long process of filing disputes and waiting 30 days for them to get dropped before you can publish your video, it sucks.

So I have a great many ideas about @jackplushie's automaton au. And they said it was okay for me to write out a post of it! I was originally gonna do one really big post but. That got too long soooo individual dorm posts with the spoilers under read mores. I also tried to keep this compliant with everything already written about the au which... is why cater is so short here because there was already a post about him.
Also tiny lore (?) thing, each 'dorm' is more so the company who produces the bots.
(Also I wrote this vaguely enough that it could work for any of the sub aus so ye)
EDIT: pssst if you liked this I made a sideblog for twst writing, @scertifiedsavanaclawstan! So go follow me over there!
Heartslabyul
Riddle is a newer, more experimetal bot designed as a manager for other androids. As a result he tends to be rather strict with other androids in particular.
Not with you of course! After all, yours are the rules he's committed to enforcing.
After all his original job fell through after he left his post for only a short time, and he was discarded as a result with the program deemed a failure.
He doesn't plan to make the same mistake again, so please keep him around! He'll keep the rest in line for you.
He's very good at that too, as part of his purpose he has the ability to instantly shutdown other bots. It works best on other bots from his company, but other androids know to be wary around him, unless they want to go to sleep for a while.
Trey bots are designed to cook! They can keep recipe information, have built in tools like knives and heating elements, and are great at dispensing scents and flavorings!
They're pretty popular due to how well they do their job, and yours does too! He... also does stuff other than cooking though. He can be quite a bit more liberal with those knives or heaters if someone gets too close.
But it's fine, he's just doing his best for you. There's not anything *you* have to be scared of, at least.
Cater is also a pretty popular bot, who's more of a generalist, he's pretty good at just about anything you ask him too do, be that keeping an eye on things or just hanging out with someone. Although other Caters you've seen aren't NEARLY as good at holding a conversation as yours.
He's been bugging you to get a few more of him actually, just for safety, and so he can help you more! Apparently one Cater can control multiple cater bot bodies! How convenient!
If you DO get multiple, be prepared to have at least one hanging off your arm at any given time.
Deuce was originally designed for enforcement, cracking skulls and breaking bones of anyone his master wanted him to.
Now though... he's trying to be more 'normal'. Deuce is the most obviously weird compared to the other bots, because while the others aren't super obvious about their whole conciousness thing Deuce is VERY obviously rejecting his initial programming.
He trys and acts more like a model citizen, he runs errands, escorts you where you need to go, and he... tries to help around the house.
Of course, he can't actually get rid of that old side of himself, and if anyone were to get close with the intent to harm you... well... You won't have to worry about that! He'll handle it for you! So make sure to keep him around please.
Ace bots are made to entertain, be that putting on magic shows or cracking jokes.
Yours definitely... does that. He's quite a fan of showing off card tricks or trying to make you laugh, you can barely pay attention to anyone else without him trying to make a joke to get your eyes back on him.
He always seems restless whenever you're walking around with him, wether that be making fun of the other bots as you see the ads for them or glaring at the other people when he thinks you aren't looking.
He doesn't really hate them or anything, he's just annoyed they keep dragging your attention away from him, he's made to keep everyone's attention so just don't look away okay? :)
(short spoilers for near end of chapter 5)
Deuce bots are also pretty good at taking hits, and yours is pretty good at it too, manipulating the force he takes in and then... dishing it back out... very much increased. The Last bot who tried to get to you was unrecognizable after landing just one punch on your Deuce.

20 Questions for Fic Writers
Thank you so much for tagging me @zyrafowe-sny!! No pressure tags: @raining-stars-somewhere-else @kestrel-wylde @sir-ballister-boldheart @sarcastictissy @enigma-the-mysterious @kowalskiology101 @just-a-music-and-poetry-lover @fellshish @actual-changeling and anyone else who sees/wants to join, god i need more fanfic writer mutuals-
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
Currently 144, most of which are one-shots but my amount of multi-chapter fics has been increasing lately. They're fun!
2. What's your total AO3 word count?
666,595 words.
3. What fandoms do you write for?
At the moment, Good Omens is my main, but other fandoms I've written a LOT for are The Owl House, Modern Family, Nimona, and Puss in Boots. I've written a lot of one-off stories for different fandoms all across the board, such as Loki, Spider-Man ATSV, Heartstopper, and The Umbrella Academy.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
into the light of the dark black night (Nimona) which also had a work inspired by it here, The Child Soldier (TOH) which is also my second most read fic, learning to love again (Nimona), bloodshed crimson clover (Nimona), and shackled conscience (TOH)
5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I do, every time!! I love comments and I think that responding to them even it's something as simple as a thank-you and a heart encourages readers to comment more! I love my readers and want them to know that they are appreciated.
6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Probably a ventfic I wrote about Barney from Dead End: Paranormal Park, but for a more general one, but i might be hopin' about this (oh, what a sin) (Good Omens), which I actually originally wrote to be exclusively a Tumblr thing but it expanded to the point that I figured I might as well post it, haha.
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
I mean, I've written WAY too many fluff stories of Modern Family, so a lottt of those, but also That Lovely Autumn Serenade (The Owl House) really sticks out to me, it's one of the first pieces I did for Huntlow and probably the first all-fluff piece I did, and I went back and edited it late last year. It's cute!
8. Do you get hate on fics?
I have, actually! Several times. I've been told that I write relationships to be too codependent in stories where said codependence is always addressed as being unhealthy and is corrected into a healthier dynamic. I've been told that diagnosing someone with ASD in 2007 is ableist because the term ASD wasn't used by the DSM at the time, something that is entirely false. I have been told that the power set I gave to a god-tier-level-of-power character was wrong, and told that I should delete my entire fic because it was so wrong - which it was not. I've also gotten bots on my fics before!
I find it all quite amusing. Especially the ASD person because I responded with a multiple-paragraph explanation of the DSM's system of diagnosing in 2007 that I had researched for the fic in question. They, of course, never responded.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
Absolutely I do. Most of it is kept private in the very depths of my google docs, but I have uploaded a few, all M/M and usually very praise kink-oriented. I have also uploaded 2 anonymously. guard thy mouth, thy serpent’s tongue (Good Omens) is both my favorite and most recent.
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?
Nope, no crossovers, but I've definitely gotten inspiration from other media, such as the play Orestes and the episode Save the Cat from SPOP most notably.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not to my knowledge!
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
I have! how did you two meet? (Puss in Boots) has been translated into Russian!
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
I have not.
14. What's your all-time favourite ship?
Currently, it's absolutely Ineffable Husbands (Aziraphale x Crowley, Good Omens), and I have written nearly 150,000 words already for them in the short few months I've been in the fandom, all of which can be found here.
15. What's a WIP you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?
Askdjskdjkhfgh I have so many unfinished Modern Family fics since I fell out of that hyperfixation,,, but other than that I don't really have many unfinished fics that aren't smut that are my private Thoughts. I do have an old OLD Raeda fic that I found recently that I might finish just because I LOVE the TOH fandom, and writing for it was always so fun because the readers are very interactive and kind, but! We shall see. It's .... not very good.
16. What are your writing strengths?
Dialogue for sure, and I'm also very good at writing gory scenes and descriptions in general, as long as I don't get long-winded about it. I actually once wrote a little 'lesson' on dialogue and how to write it for a friend, and if you might find that helpful, feel free to check it out here. I'm also great at not getting too worked up over the imperfections of the first draft.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
ENDINGS. Fucking endings, Jesus Christ I cannot write endings. Also descriptions, I get way too strung out on them and then they go on forever and never stop. Also using way too many commas and dashes; I get way too obsessed with how things look and not how it reads.
Also also - titles. Summaries. Fuuuucking tags. Titles.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
I've used bits of Spanish in my fics for TOH and PIB, but I always run it through a reliable translator (DeepL) and then add a note giving 1) the translations and 2) telling anyone who speaks the language to PLEASE correct me on anything, which people often do!
19. First fandom you wrote for?
The Lucifer fandom, way back in 2021! I wrote a redemption arc story for Michael. I edited it in full (rewrote it, really) last year because I will be completely honest, it was garbage. But I enjoyed that story and it's still my most read to this day.
20. Favourite fic you've ever written?
I have several, actually.
brought by the sunlight of the spirit (to pour into rain) (Good Omens) - if you do read this one, it can be VERY VERY VERY TRIGGERING, so take care. It's a heavy story, but one that was very cathartic for me. The premise is Crowley being tortured in the worst way by Hell, and Aziraphale helping to 'fix' what Crowley thinks is so broken.
Pull Up the Ladder When the Flood Comes (Good Omens) - Crawley saving children in Mesopotamia, and Aziraphale coming to his aid while struggling with immense religious trauma. Another one that was extremely cathartic for me, which is why I hold it so near and dear.
Butterfly Tattoo (Modern Family) - also can be VERY triggering (there's a common theme here, isn't there?), this is an AU story where Mitchell runs away in 1989 and struggles for a long time before coming to be happy and to love himself, and the story follows him as he reunites with his sister and father after 20 years of no contact. I did an inane amount of research for this fic and it's the longest I've ever written, clocking at around 50,000 words.
shackled conscience (TOH) - again, trigger-heavy. Pre-s2 Darius stumbles across Hunter bleeding out in the castle and tries taking care of him. Not a happy ending story, but there are a couple of brief sweet exchanges between the two.

Ok so first of all. My main man you do understand you can’t claim you actually made the “art” you “made” right? It’s AI generated.
“If it's created by AI, nobody can claim ownership of it or copyright it”
That’s law dude. You didn’t make any of the “art” your showing off. Anyone can come post it anywhere and claim it with no repercussions because quite literally. NO ONE MADE IT. It was made by AI. A robot. Not even the company can claim it because it was their bot that made it. Not them.
Lastly 👀💦 and this is no like jab to you at all but. Why not just draw or write this stuff yourself? It’ll always come out 1000% better than AI no matter what level you’re starting at. I mean dude. Ai can hardly render hands or complexity 90% of the time. Not to say I can either but like 👀 bro. Plus it always looks… the same. Like you can pose things however you want but it’ll always have that ai sheen to it ya know. No real heart or soul to it. You’re literally feeding a bot when there are so many artists out there that can be benefiting from this that would be willing to put everything they had into it (shading, dynamic posing, lighting, backgrounds,) for a few dollars or experience if you know them and ask nicely enough.
hello, good evening! ^^
yes, you are totally right. it's wrong for someone to claim rights over something an AI did, specially if it's supposed to look like art or a drawing.
however, i never did that. you probably saw my pinned post or the watermarks i started adding to the images, and I suppose that's why you sent me this, but just to clarify things, i do not care at all if people repost those ai images. like, I really don't. I've seen them being reposted countless times, specially on pinterest and i don't claim to have "created" them. all i said I did was write a prompt and the ai generator did all on its own. I made that very clear more than once.
I had an issue with that one specific creator I talked about on my pinned post because they were doing exactly what you're saying, they were claiming to have spent HOURS working on those "edits". they even said that I STOLE them. and when I confronted them, I made it clear that those were made in seconds.
and that's exactly why I started adding the watermarks. I didn't wanna do it in first place as I've said before, but it really pisses me off, you know? when someone tries to get clout for something that they didn't do. the watermarks prevent that from happening again, since they make it clear that it's ai generated. I mean, it literally says "made by ai".
also, i understand the issue regarding all that ai art thing, i really do. but those images are not made off art tho... you can tell they are realistic, since (as long as I know) the ai used real images (of real people, taken by cameras) that are available on internet. I'm also very against those ai arts too, that's why I never post any art looking images (or even if they're slightly artsy) that the ai generates from time to time, because I'm very aware that they steal from artists. I mean, i'm an artist myself. I'm not "feeding" a bot because... it feeds itself.
when I started posting the images, i was just trying to have some fun and share it with the fandom, I don't benefit from this at all. i mean no harm, and honestly, it's not that serious. if you don't like how it looks, well, you can block the hashtag "ai" (I always tag my ai images posts with it) and you won't see it again. you can even block me if it's not the type of content you're interested in, no hard feelings at all. anyways here's a screenshot that shows that I never took any credit for any of the images:
Tumblr media
well, I hope you have a great day, and thanks for addressing this issue. it's very important to talk about that. ❤️❤️❤️

DraftDash: Day 26
Did a sprint with the Discord bot tonight and wrote 329 words. I got so into the flow that when the bot alerted about the time being up I thought someone was messaging me on Discord, because I had forgot that I was doing a timed sprint. After reporting my word count to the bot and getting my XP, I went back to the notes app and did some light editing, because I was still a little bit in the flow and wanted to make sure I got it down the way I wanted to.
I also noticed something interesting: So I use transcripts and screenshots of the episodes as material for the episodes where not much changes, and the transcripts aren't official or anything, they're fan-written things I find on the wiki. And sometimes - often - the description parts of the transcripts are just straight up wrong when you compare with the screenshots or the actual episodes. Like there is a moment in Horror Club where Ronaldo is talking to Lars, and Lars puts up his hand in a talk-to-the-hand kind of dismissive gesture, and even in the screenshot it is clear that Ronaldo is flinching and hiding behind a tape cover because he thinks Lars is going to hit him. But the transcript said something like "Ronaldo covers his face in embarrassment." Like that is a hell of an interpretation, and to me indicates that whoever wrote that would not be able to recognise abusive behavior if they ever witnessed it.

ffxiv fanfes got me on the au hamster wheel
Edit: fixed the, fc tags wheezing
Me n @myrhhi have been, spitballing ffxiv au for like, a Good While now and fanfes really kinda, turned the dial up a bit so, the brainworms (with more under the cut bc it uh, kinda got long,)
(also pls check out @mochinue's ffxiv ac6 art!! it's fantastic)
≪hounds≫ being an fc for the hounds and Walter! They're all raiders who largely PF, but decided that they Did want an FC chest to store and share their stuff in - so they turned to Walter. 'It's a good game' they said, 'we can spend more time together, since most of us have moved out' they said.
He caved.
Unfortunately, Michigan found out pretty fast, so he texts Walter whenever he needs a fill for his static, the Redguns. They're in ≪BALAM≫ which is primarily an RP fc (ngl, kinda like foxhole rp? except in ff) - and they're mostly there 'cause Michigan is with his tax-benefits EB Nile. ≪FCS≫ (Furlong) hasn't forgiven them for stealing away Michigan, but they deal.
Iguazu's been trying to pick up using a controller and it's a bit of a time. Coincidentally, he got GM jailed for swearing at someone in-game again, and Volta would Very Much Like It if his friend could keep playing with him?
Meanwhile, ≪AQB≫ is 50% raiding fc and 50% crafting to support the raiding - the Vespers are just one of their statics. Freud says it feels like another 50% RPing sometimes, with how Snail makes it feel like they're on Slack whenever he talks.
Hawkins is their primary crafter, and also holds a Saint of the Firmament (Mining). He knows the Diadem like the back of his hand and he wishes that he didn't.
Rusty was recruited as a part of the Vespers for the current tier, but was actually there to investigate who the Hell seemed to be consistently undercutting the things from his usual FC.
It was Swinburne. Man took an extended break after they found out, citing irl things.
The RLF players are in ≪wall≫, which was made because Ziyi wanted to play a few years back and they weren't letting her do that unsupervised! Their fc house, is also called 'the Wall' and they have a sub named 'the Strider'. Actually, all of their vessels are named that, except with a number at the end.
O’Keeffe hangs around the Wall a lot. Everyone is Suspicious except for Flatwell, who’s mildly exasperated. They had a very quiet EB you see, and while it’s not a secret, neither of them are going out of their way to publicize it since there's been bad blood since The Swinburne Incident.
And other stray thoughts;
The hounds have, individually and collectively, managed to PF some ultimate clears, and they do go in and help now and again. They tend to clear the tier fast, get geared and get super casual after that.
Sulla's been around since 1.0 and he's been trying to get Walter to play for the last ten years. He Can't Believe that it was the hounds that finally did it. Unfair. Meanwhile, the hounds have a grudge against Sulla bc somehow, the guy always rolls high on the loot in PF and snipes their coffers ww
Carla had been playing casually for a while, and is technically the FC leader for ≪RaD≫, which primarily does housing, glam and a bit of rp on the side. They're also a small community of mod makers, but you didn't hear that here! Carla just happened to help with complicated issues enough times that they asked her to adopt them.
Honest Brute cleared out the FC chest when he left, also stole some sub parts--(like that's basically what he did in canon right,)
Chatty-bot is a bot in the RaD discord server based off a real player Chatty Stick who isn't around as much anymore. They log on now and again to help when Carla asks though!
Allmind is That Person with the extremely normal name and you kind of worry that they might've used their real name in the game? But the way she talks is kinda like a bot and the community is divided on whether she's a bot or not. Hasn't been banned for being a bot though, so who knows...?
≪coral≫ is? was? one of those mass invite FCs, but here, Some FC Drama Probably Happened, Maybe Named Fires Of Ibis, and it was briefly deleted. Some members who weren't as caught up in it remade it a little while later though, and they're rebuilding.
Branch roamed Eureka, and then Bozja for a good long while as a light party - but they've recently gotten into the Variant Dungeons, so they're around a little less, but they're generally down for some BA o/

Songbird please
Gasoline - Halsey
When I tell you I was IN BED WHEN I GOT THIS ASK AND CHECKED THE SONG and almost got up just to answer.
TGM Icemav/Hangster/Bobnix/Fanback
PACIFIC RIM AU BABYYYY (Click the link if you're too young and don't know the movie but it's one of my greatest obsessions and therefor I will impart it on everyone.)
Hear me out hear me out!!! (put under a cut because I'm about to RANT)
Send me 'Songbird' and I will put my music on shuffle and come up with an AU based on the first song I hear.
Disclaimer: this was an actual AU I had planned to write in my head and never got to it so do not judge. 86' core - Maverick as the legendary Jaeger pilot, along with Goose of course, (Ice & Slider are the other legends) 16 kills under his belt, San Francisco wall defended for eight years undefeated until Goose's death. VICIOUS rivalry with Iceman & Slider. Disappears after Goose dies when they're facing a lvl 6 Kaiju, he still wins the fight but his best friend dying while they were still connected? Fucks him up beyond repair. Kaiju attacks significantly slow down after the lvl 6 is killed but it also scares a lot of jaeger pilots, the program suffers. '22 core - Jaeger tech? OFF THE ROOF, these new bots are nothing like they used to be and some can even be single pilot but it requires TREMENDOUS ability. Cut to, finally another lvl 6 shows up, wipes half of the new gen pilots, the ones who are left are corralled to train before the next one does. But they need someone to teach and Ice, who's Marshall now, can't step inside a Jaeger again since he's sick Cue everyone trying to find Maverick and the only one who knows where he is? Rooster. Who is a pilot and sure as hell him and Mav fought over it back then. Mav ultimately relents into coming back because of Rooster and them having to win the war against the Kaiju before the program is ended or, you know, THE WORLD ends. - Points for:
+ Hangster has to drift to pilot despite being solo pilots, they're good alone but formidable together, problem is getting them to do it in the first place; + Bobnix are a surprise/stand in pilot duo but they KICK ASS; + Fanback are the pair that no one expects to be as good as they are but they're so very skillful; + Icemav pilots together one last time (angst or fluff, dealers choice) (Little Macheresin bonus for Coyote being the only other person who can drift with Hangman and gets super defensive and protective over Jake when he has to pair up with Rooster.) I started ranting about the characters and ships and it started getting so long so lmk if anyone wants to hear more about this cause as I've said... :') it was a fic project at some point.
edit to add: more about this AU here

May I ask, since you seem to have knowledge/experience with this platform, what exactly is the issue with bots? I don't know what they do that's so bad. Why should/do you block them? (sorry, relatively new here and have heard they're bad and that you should block them, just don't know why)
First of all! Welcome buddy! Have a cookie.
I used Tumblr until somewhere like 2013? and only came back like 1 year ago. So some info I have might not be accurate anymore.
Bots are an annoyance at best and super scammy at worse.
The "nicest" ones will target your blog to follow, one post to like or reblog among a randomly selected amount of posts/accounts. The "like" one are the easiest to spot the pattern because they tend to target the same kinds of posts every time and only follow Tumblr Staff. They do that to "legitimate" their presence as a proper account and definitely-not-a-bot-wink-wink.
I actually have one targeting this post of mine (you can scroll through the likes). They're all blocked/reported but I don't think Tumblr cares a lot about those. As a creator, that is suuuper annoying for me because I don't know if I get actual engagement from people who see my posts (and potentially play my stuff) or not.
The "nasty" ones will go into your dms/asks and send you NSFW images or literal scam links (watch out for that my animal is sick scam going around btw). Or they will reblog posts and add those spam links. Even after "The Purge" (of NSFW) they haven't really disappeared...
One issue with bots account (created en-masse on other websites) is that we don't know what they'll be used for. Are they going to stay dormant and just used to boost someone's numbers (dumb but somewhat harmless)? Or will they be used to promote more scams/send more NSFW content to users in the future?
But I think most people think less about this potential danger of bots, and more in the lens of: I just want real people to follow me.
Edit: A good add-on from @faerie-market-if
There was also a post that went around a good while ago that said bot accounts are used to artificially boost legitimacy and numbers for other websites on Google search results? Like something about bots interacting with real blogs that made them seem more real to Googles algorithm, then those 'legitimate' bots could give a site traffic and boost their Google search traffic

Japanese anon. The recent Dream interview infuriated a lot of people and say it invalidated Crimson Flower, and the atrocious phrasing of Petra’s situation. They liked the info about Rodrigue though! And Matthias! But Gilbert didn’t get much, and the Church, nothing.
For Heroes, people are excited mostly for Julia and Haar getting improvements, but they didn’t want that for Edelgard because they’re getting sick of her, especially after Hopes. They also did not like the voting tournament putting Byleth vs Gatekeeper because the latter was before anti bot measures were put in place. They were very happy for this year’s winners compared to last and most picked either Byleth or Chrom, or at least from what I saw with friends. Speculation is running over new units meaning that maybe a Genealogy remake is coming soon.
More Heroes news: Kozaki wrote that he was speaking out against harassment of the artists, and said even people sent him edits of art saying “this is how it should’ve been done!” Though it’s confirmed that Japanese fans have also been doing this, there is more suspicion and anger towards western fans because of their previous behavior towards Himukai Yuji for his art of resplendent Lucina.
And more anger too because fans of certain characters keep getting harassed in English spaces. An artist I follow wrote “Sometimes I search dimileth in English, but why the fandom that starts with "E" is so interested in here? They are always talking about what they hate and pretend to be they're only victims. but in fact, they are just rude people.” And someone else said that a popular English artist encouraged a poll for “ugliest characters” and pointed that they and their friends mostly use it to be hateful towards Faerghus characters, Byleth, and the church. They wrote that it was awful that an artist with many followers is being so irresponsible and using their influence to be hateful.
Well, most people now are just going back to playing Houses.
Hi Japanese anon. First of all, I saw your ask about me feeling better soon. Thank you. I am on the mend, but not 100%. I'm still kinda in pain, but I'm taking the chance while I have a clear head to answer asks and reblog things. :)
I also saw your other asks. Thank you for sharing those. I'll keep them private! But that poor artist. :( Well, I understand. They have beautiful art, though.
The recent Dream interview infuriated a lot of people and say it invalidated Crimson Flower, and the atrocious phrasing of Petra’s situation. They liked the info about Rodrigue though! And Matthias! But Gilbert didn’t get much, and the Church, nothing.
I saw that interview. Absolutely baffling. I understand their intentions but.... they are just not well done into the game at all.
And you know what? I agree that it does invalidate CF. Not that I particularly liked CF, mind you.... But SB is basically the same route but better for Edelgard. She's taller and healthier (something the devs themselves pointed out!). Her conquest didn't take as long. She took out two of her greatest enemies! Claude is on her side in one of them! It's absolutely baffling.
And what they said about Petra made me roll my eyes. They want it to be grey so badly but lack the writing ability to do so....
Also, my dilfs Rodrigue and Matthias finally getting the respect they deserve. <3 Poor Gilbert though, and of course the Church was COMPLETELY ignored. They literally just cut 1/4 of the content from the game and just was like "here, merge it with the BL cast". :/
Oh, I would LOVE a remake of Genealogy soon. Truly, that came could use it imo. Not a major overhaul. QoL changes, updated sprites, that sort of thing.
At least Edelgard's refine isn't too crazy. It's Dimitri's that is the "holy crap!" refine. I've been enjoying is greatly.
I've heard about that. Really a shame.
Don't get me wrong, sometimes the art does suck or isn't up to par. But that's no excuse to harass the artists!
Still, the suspicion of Western fans is a bit much. Yes, we don't always have the best behavior, but that can only go so far on this particular subject.
It is a shame that people use whatever small influence they have to promote hateful and negative attitudes towards characters. Especially since it breeds resentment towards other fans as a result. It's all so very tiring....
Sigh...

sei as one of the older kids on sfw enhablr (not saying ur old !! i’m just assuming bc 😭😭 it’s just that there’s a lot of minors (12-16) on here) how do you feel abt the current content for the maknae line? like ik it’s not always super sexualized or anything but sometimes i see stuff that’s just the way it’s worded really rubs me the wrong way ☹️ esp bc some of the kids on here are so young it makes me feel like if they see stuff like that , they might start think it’s okay for others to treat them the same or vice verse … whenever i see edits of niki on tiktok , i have to avoid the comments bc there’s almost always like a “daddy” , “how is he 16” or “you don’t know what you do to me” like wtf he’s a literal child ?? it makes me so mad and honestly so uncomfortable :( and i saw an article on kboo today too that said niki apparently has around 200 explicit or mature fics written abt him on ao3 … sometimes even the fboi trope (usually when it’s written abt minors) bothers me bc i see minors writing abt it (like 13-15 y/o) and i don’t understand why they don’t just use the term player or smtg … bc they’ll go out of their way to mention how the character has sex a lot an whatnot , even that feels way too suggestive for me personally for a minor too write let alone abt a minor too , (i’m usually okay with the trope & will read it though if it’s abt the hyung line or written by someone legal but otherwise it just feels kind of unnecessary like i saw a fboi au for hyung line recently that was written by a minor i think 13/14 y/o & they mentioned how the characters would have s*x a lot of talk about it often as like to fit the trope but it felt strange to me)
sorry for the rant,, i was just wondering how you felt … omg also though tbh i noticed that some of the minors on here / blogs in gen seem way too comfy on here like they’ll be sharing where they live , their actual names and sometimes like giving a lot of personal info … like did they not learn abt internet safety or do they just no care? as one of the older kids , i kind of worry abt them :( i really hope everybody stays safe on here <3 & some reminders: never be afraid to block anyone ! bc i’ve seen a lot of minors on here get sent stuff from the p*rn bots or just weird dms :( & u don’t need to force yourself to interact with someone , make sure ur comfy with them first !
Hi nonnie, I've seen this ask floating around a lot and I agree with everything people have said so I'll try to not make this too long
First, I'm actually not too sure abt the current context of the maknae line as I don't actually interact or go out of my way to actively read stuff. And that is because it feels weird reading something abt someone who's younger or around the same age as me. So that is why it IRKS me to even think abt the possibility that people are sexualizing the maknae line. It's absolutely disgusting. I don't have tik tok but I've heard some stuff from a few moots and that's so fuck horrible. To think that people don't understand that it's wrong to sexualize minors is just jarring??? Like I'd like to think it's basic knowledge but damn. But yes I agree that the Fandom is super young and they might feel comfy calling ex. Riki smth like "daddy" (as u mentioned in the tik tok part) EVEN THO ITS SO FUCKING WRONG. I feel like they think that bc they're younger than him, they think it's okay to call him that. BUT ITS NOT. THEY HAVE TO REALIZE THAT HE IS VERY MUCH STILL UNDERAGE AND ITS INAPPROPRIATE AND DISTURBING. And also regarding the "I can’t believe he's only 16" comments seem like they're from people older than him???? Which just makes it worse too??? Like TF YOU SHOULD KNOW THAF THIS IS WRONG? Atp I'm not sure what to even do anymore.... it's just disgusting.
Abt the fboy trope.... UMMMM WHAT NOW???? THATS NOT IT?? writing abt a minor who quote on quote has "sex a lot?" THAT ALREADY SCREAMS RED FLAG. like what the fuck do u realize that's already sexualizing a minor omg. And abt young kids writing suggestive things abt the hyungline also rubs me the wrong way....
Abt the safety thing,,,, tbh I agree but if I critique them I'd feel a lil too hypocritical bc when I was younger I also had socials when I wasn't supposed to. But it's a whole other issue abt putting all ur info out there. People should really take in mind their internet safety and not display everything abt themselves online. It is quite worrying.... and dw abt the blocking thing. I forsake block whoever I feel uncomfortable around :") and I hope others do the same.
Oops I said I would keep this short but if it really ain't short 😭😭🤚🏼 sorry nonnie

HELP THIS IS SO LONG I THOUGHT I WAS GETTING CANCELLED OR SMN 💀 and pls there's not a single day i dont feel old on kpopblr, it's just that the general community here holds an average age of 13-15 years :/ ALSO PLS DONT APOLOGIZE FOR RANTING IT'S FINE !!
TW : mentions of nsfw and all yeah .
as for your question, i'm sorry if my response isn't what you expected because i rarely read for maknae lines. first of all, the only 4th gen group i read for is enha, so i don't know how bad things are in other fandoms ( and i've heard abt nct blr being nothing but a pit of smuts— no offence to the writers— but i agree ) about niki though, i personally haven't encountered any such comments but some of my friends have reported seeing nsfw accounts for enha maknae lines, which is straight up disgusting because they're minors. probably one of the main reasons why i don't read for maknae line because i legit can't trust minors here, except a few that i have known for a while. the thing about minors ( 13-15 y/o as you said ) writing nsfw / borderline nsfw, whether for minors or adults, is so messed up because that's straight up wrong. i don't care if you were exposed to such topics at the age of 10 or whatever, if i spot you, a minor, writing nsfw i'm going to block you.
and smut about minors is even more messed up because it's like a gate to tell people that yeah, you can have sex at 16 it's fine, completely normal— which it isn't. moreover, how would you feel if someone wrote a smut about you when you're just 16? and not even smut, i think some people tend to see niki the way they see heeseung, which is also depicted in fiction. the point here is that heeseung is an adult while niki is not, and creating a line between how you write the two of them is very important. you can make suggestive jokes, go on, but not a suggestive work. that's weird, it's messed up.
honestly, i just don't read for maknae line in general lmao. sunoo is fine at times, but you'll rarely spot me reading a jungwon fic, and reading for riki is even rarer; same with writing. like, i know i have riki fics in works but they don't revolve around romance or whatever. i simply don't feel comfortable bcz jungwon is like, just a few months older and niki is younger than me. i think it's just a personal preference but as an adult, i prefer writing for hyung line over everyone else in the group. besides, i once saw someone writing a make out scene with niki and it was so descriptive, i scrolled so fast lmao 🏃‍♀️💨 i mean ok if you're dying to writing a kissing scene but there's a limit ??? he's a minor and you're writing about grinding i ????? also the kboo article im 💀 it's funny because if someone would sexualise a minor irl people would go off but suddenly it's all normal in fictions ( and i just don't mean kpop fics. it's wrong even if you're writing for fictional characters who are canonically minors ) and, i've seen MANY users posting nsfw right on the day an idol turns adult ( like i knew a sunoo one pls ) as if they were waiting for him to turn legal, only to write smut ?? which is so disgusting. fortunately, the user got called out for their actions.
yeah long story short : if i spot you writing inappropriate stuff for minors, i will call you out on your bs i don't care if it ends up with you deactivating or whatever
ALSO YEAH IVE SEEN MANY KIDS DISCLOSE THEIR PERSONAL INFO PLSS, like yawll have an alias for 'privacy' but would give away your school's name to one person you met online like three days ago 🧍‍♀️ there's a reason why people warn you about internet safety and honestly, if stuff hasn't happened to you doesn't mean it can't in future.
you need to watch out for yourself especially if you're on a website which is rated for users above your age ( like tumblr ) since you would be the only one responsible for your actions. btw im so tired of porn bots like a few days ago i had one send me link to her nudes ???? it was 7 in the morning . AND IVE SEEN PEOPLE POST ABOUT THOSE BOTS AND GATHER ATTENTION ffs just block them and move on there's no need to inform your moots.
THIS IS SO LONG I AM SORRY i hope this was Okay like i don't know what to say except this whole issue is fucked up so badly and i can't believe people are so hungry for porn, they're involving minors in it :/

Semi-professional data-science-y thoughts from a UX designer re: 10% kudos to hits ratio ahead.
tl;dr: As everyone has already said, it's Not Great. Just read the tags and summary to decide if you want to read something.
tl;dr2: ... and I took that personally.
Alright, no one asked for this, but the post of someone saying they only read fics that have 1 kudos per 10 hits is floating around twitter. Since it's part of my job to pay close attention to analytics to evaluate the success of my designs and user flows, I figured I'd just... info dump. It's aggravating that at least one person is out here using a terrible metric based on a misleading piece of data to ignore whole swaths of amazing stories.
"Hits" is raw data, and that's pretty useless! In the case of AO3, it shows any entity accessing the fic, once per 24 hour period (so if you hit a fic 4 times in one day, it'll only count the first time as a "hit". It will restart your count the next day.). It does not weed out junk/irrelevant data. This includes: - People who keep the tab open for weeks at a time so it refreshes when the tab is focused. - People who visit often to reread. - People coming back every time a new chapter is released. - Authors visiting often to reread / edit. - People who were never going to read because they weren't the target audience based on the tags / summary. - Web crawlers. Bots. Etc, etc, and on and on. What you want are good faith hits from your target audience.
You can only leave kudos ONCE, regardless of how many times you visit.
Which means that a better measurement to get accurate conversation would take into consideration only UNIQUE visitors who spent a significant amount of time on the page, indicating that they read at least enough of the fic to indicate that they are actually part of the target demo. THAT'S the number you compare to the number of kudos received. (Note that this is still a bit of a gray area since someone can open the story and just leave it open without reading. Short of looking over someone's shoulder, this is the best you can do... unless AO3 adds heatmaps to our stats page, which I don't see happening any time soon, haaa.)
EVEN IF the data itself were good, a 10% conversion rate is astronomical as a KPI (key performance indicator, a measure of success). So we're clear, a "conversion" is an instance of a person seeing the thing (your fic) and doing what you want them to do (leaving a kudo). Not that you can really compare fic satisfaction to an ecommerce funnel, but your average conversion rate on, say, a marketing splash page is LESS THAN 3%. If you hit 5% on your campaign, you're having a pizza party in the office, guys. And marketing campaigns can be incredibly sophisticated affairs, fueled by massive research efforts, seo work, algorithms based on user behavior and all kinds of creepy ass data collection, etc. Fic promos are... you know. We chuck them up on social media and pray people see them.
So not only are hits as shown in AO3 a very poor metric to calculate conversion, a 10% conversion rate as a MINIMUM bar for entry is just ridiculous.
Clearly, I've thought about this a lot. I've gotten stuck watching my "conversion rate" go down as hits increased but the kudos didn't move. I've felt badly - so badly - about my proudest moment (where writing is concerned), go nowhere after I finished it. Thinking about it in terms of realistic conversion rates helps me, so I'm mostly sharing this information for anyone else out there it may help.
Super cool that that person is happy with their method of finding fics to read. They're depriving themselves of some really awesome stories, though. A far better way to decide whether or not to read something is to use the search function and filters to narrow things down and then simply read tags and summaries.
And if you start reading and don't like the style... nothing is keeping you there. You can bounce (which, hey, a bounce rate is another metric that would be far more handy than a raw hit counter).
Anyway... behold, my absolute failure of a fic (which resulted in wonderful comments that have made me cry because folks were moved or took the time to leave interesting related information or drew things for me or still periodically send me really cute bears).

hi! so with the new influx of untitled/default icon blogs that might be real new users and might be bots, I thought I'd offer a little guide on how to change your icon etc on the mobile app. if you're new and haven't yet, please do this. many of us are in the habit of blocking blogs that appear to be bots, and as long as you have the default appearance options, you kind of look like a bot.
but idk it may not be the most obvious how to do this if you're new, so here's a little tutorial! first, click the little person-ish shaped icon in the bottom right corner
Tumblr media
this will take you to your blog. once on your blog, click the little painter's palette icon near the top right
Tumblr media
this will take you straight to blog customization! once you're there, you'll be able to change your icon, header, title, description and blog colors.
Tumblr media
please please please change at LEAST your icon and title (circled in red). this is what a user sees immediately when you follow them. if you have something other than the default here, you've passed the initial 'bot or real blog?' test. probably at least some users would insta-block a blog with the defaults but not look twice if you've customized these.
next, the stuff I've circled in green - header edit, description & blog colors - these are things you may also want to change to avoid getting blocked for bot-resemblance. they're just another possible indicator of whether you're an actual person customizing your blog or a bot doing the bare minimum to look non-botlike.
now, all that said, the most important thing you can do to make it clear you're a real person is post and reblog. most of this site's action is reblogging. it's very very standard. likes are a nice way of letting someone know you like their post, but they don't help the post get seen by more people. if you like a post and think other people might like to see it too, reblog it! please.
you don't need to add any comment to the body of the post to justify reblogging it, either! the vast majority of reblogging people do doesn't involve adding to the post. and in fact, adding a little comment about finding the post funny or the art pretty or anything is not the most liked behavior - if someone likes a post and wants to reblog it, they may not want to reblog a version of it with someone else's comment that doesn't really add anything significant to it. but you don't have to keep it entirely to yourself - that's what we use tags for! yes, tags are built for blog organization and post exposure, and we use them for that too, but because your tags don't copy to the next person's reblog, it's the means most of use to share our thoughts on a post to followers without cluttering the shareable part.
so yeah. it's kind of a knee-jerk reaction for some of us to block empty blogs that might just be bots. if you'd like to avoid that, then just - do a few of these so you look like an actual person, maybe? and you'll get the hang of it all soon enough. good luck and happy tumbling!

relistening to artificial condition now i know ART tells its crew about murderbot is making me wonder what exactly it said and in what contexts, like
it promised to keep MB's presence a secret and i don't think it was lying. and i doubt its crew would have noticed on their own just cuz they have no reason to suspect anything like that happening. so how did it give itself away...
i think. hmmm. i think someone watches a show with Bad SecUnit Rep™ and ART gets annoyed, and isn't used to hiding that, so then iris (because it can't be mad at her) asks what's up, and it goes off immediately about how media is an excellent barometer for a culture's views and what you can tell from the varying popularity of various tropes – since it can't watch media without MB it's been attempting to scratch the itch by reading academic papers about media – and eventually it gets specifically to bots & constructs in media and how they can only ever be villains or desperate to be human and iris have you ever noticed how often nameless mooks are secunits? it's 73.4% of the time, iris, even though in 35.8% of those instances it's not logistically feasible for the villains to employ secunits, and sometimes media production companies decide it's cheaper to actually shoot the secunits with live weaponry rather than edit in effects. iris are you aware how many secunits die in a given year. that is a trick question, corporations are not required to disclose that data, no one knows except for me because i hacked every security company's records and what i found was horrifying. the average lifespan of a secunit is nine. nine.
and iris is like. okay. peri? how did you meet a secunit?
and ART immediately, like someone who has been desperate to discuss this for weeks, says 'it came up to me on a transport ring and asked me for a ride'. then says 'don't tell anyone'. then says 'i will tell the captain myself'
iris says 'wow, you just instantly decided i'd snitch on you, huh?'; ART bristles, says 'this behaviour is out of character for me and you are supposed to report all–'; iris cuts in, 'you made a friend, it's not like that's dangerous'
ART says 'i assisted it in committing murder'. iris stares. ART says 'they were attempting to kill its clients'. iris says 'i mean that's better but, yeah, you do have to tell dad. now.'
and then seth is like. 'well ive been bracing for you to tell me you killed someone for years, peri, but the secunit is a surprise. are you lonely? are you going to befriend every dangerous loner you meet?' ART huffs 'no, i was bored, and i have no interest in befriending other humans. i have enough human friends. if my secunit is in danger i may drop everything to assist it, but i do not anticipate finding other bots or constructs whose company i enjoy. i have enough bot friends'. then it adds 'do not tell my siblings' and seth n iris both quirk an eyebrow because oh, peri likes this secunit
and then ART writes several messages to several media & cultural studies academics at its university because they won't think it's strange if it's asking about the representation of bots in media, and actually the secunit thing really bothers it. then it changes tac n starts messaging the arts people instead, to the tune of 'but what if media with sympathetic secunit bot characters who werent human love interests did exist'. which is a long game in the show respect but immediately fruitful in the book respect, because as we know it's significantly logistically easier for arts students to write books than make shows and the university that made ART definitely attracts bot nerds of all disciplines. and then it waits until they're in transit again to actually mention this to MB, because it isn't an idiot it knows how obvious an indicator of significant feelings this is. MB has to go face a wall to process its emotions
