THW Rewrite
More headcannons because I have not been able to stop thinking about this franchise for the past 13 years, and I have over a decade's worth of opinions.
I've already posted some of these ideas but ehh it's fine.
While I enjoyed watching it for the first time, THW was disappointing to me for a variety of reasons. (The music was probably the best out the franchise though, I'll say that) Grimmel didn't reach his full villain potential since the writers used Ruffnut's lack of judgment as his key to success instead of him being a capable strategist. (Also they did my girl so dirty. She may be a dumbass, but she's not an idiot!) I don't like that the dragons left after just 6 years. I don't like that all the riders except for Hiccup and Astrid are just played for laughs instead of shining like they do in RTTE. I don't like whatever the hell Snotlout's obsession with Valka was, and I didn't like Toothless' "romance" with the Light Fury. I hate that even dragons can't escape half-developed romance and a nuclear family as the ultimate character accomplishment.
So here are my edits (looking back, there's quite a bit going on, so it may need to be split into 2 movies or a short TV series)
The time jump happens between movies 2 and 3. (I want a full movie with bearded Hiccup and "Homecoming" does NOT count) 10-15 years have passed, so the riders are about 30-35. Zephyr and Nuffink are either little kids or preteens and are getting to an age where they're starting to train dragons.
Astrid is more rough around the edges like she was in HTTYD 1 and Rob/Dob/RTTE, not just Hiccup's supportive gf/wife. Instead of making her softer, motherhood has made her fiercer because she has more people to protect. Hiccup on the other hand is a doting father and can't say no to the kids if they give him puppy dog eyes: heart melted every time.
Toothless finds his original flock(?)/herd?/murder?/unkindness?/parliament? of Night Furies instead of just one "soulmate". Each can have their own personalities and roles in the group while Toothless is the baby. I think it would be interesting if, like Hiccup, Toothless was quite small compared to his peers - potentially explaining why he was on his own and got separated from the group before meeting Hiccup.
Dagur and Heather are brought into a council meeting as Berserker allies. Hiccup greets them in a way that clarifies things for audience members who haven't watched the show. I suppose Mala would also be in it too. I don't dislike Mala but I hate her and Dagur's relationship. More development needed there.
Gustav should be there too, still very much trying to prove himself as a dragon rider and occasionally messing things up.
In terms of the main plot and villains, I'm not too picky, although I've said before that I'm tired of dragon mind-control being the main villain tool. I'm fine with it if Drago comes back as the villain, but if not, the villain should just be dragon hunters or rival dragon riders who use their dragons for conquering/raiding other settlements.
It can hit pretty much hit the same story beats as before but with better character dynamics.
Make Ruff and Tuff more instrumental to mischief and redirection in a way that helps the plot.
Give Fishlegs more credit for his discoveries and record-keeping about dragons.
Snotlout and Eret are together (or implied to be together if that's the best we can get). Snotlout is also no longer Hiccup's rival - he should be his second in command. They can disagree from time to time, but ultimately, his loyalty is not in question.
Fishlegs and Ruffnut have kids who cause chaos with Zephyr and Nuffink.
It would be cool to include a couple characters from other parts of the world with dragon mythology. I understand that Vikings are white but if we have goddamn flying dragons, there's no reason there can't be visitors from other cultures (who aren't villains).
Ending option 1: The movie can end with the dragons going away, but now they've been with the Berkians for over a decade and it just feels more impactful.
The "there were dragons when I was a boy" line can either be Hiccup talking to his grandson after an even longer time jump, or Nuffink talking to his own kids about Hiccup's adventures.
Ending 2: the Berkians go to The Hidden World with the dragons. Hiccup writes a memoir to leave behind. We hear him reading from it at the beginning and assume that means dragons are going to leave, but it's actually a diversion to make people think dragons are gone so no one tries to look for them.
Ending 3: We accept that HTYYD takes place in a different world so we don't have to explain why dragons don't live among us anymore. The movie ends with Hiccup vowing to make the archipelago safe for all dragons and Nuffink and Zephyr take up the mantle of discovering new dragons. The dragons stay and they all live happily ever after, the end :)
I'm tempted to actually write this as a fanfiction but I already got a lot of writing projects atm. We shall see.

Hi, I have kinda weird question, but I think about it a lot. How do you think when main characters (and their parents plus Gobber) have birthdays? I don't know why, but I didn't see anything of this. I need it for full picture in my scenarios in my head lol, but I can't do it myself, so I decided to ask you. If you don't want to write this, it's okay. Englisch isn't my language btw
OHHHH OKAY THIS SOUNDS LIKE FUN
Hiccup: Hiccup tries to keep his birthday a quieter affair, but at any given point in time he is the chief or the chief’s son, and that’s not really an option. Add onto that the fact that he has five best friends, Gobber, and Stoick or Valka who are always excited to do something for it, he doesn’t get to gloss over it. They all pull together each year to give him some sort of present, and they throw a huge party on Berk (where he receives a lot of food and gifts from the villagers.
Astrid: She also likes to keep her birthday a little quieter. She tries to get some time to herself for a ride with Stormfly or to train. But eventually she comes back to the gang in the late afternoon/evening and they have drinks around a fire somewhere and they give her a gift.
Snotlout: Everyone knows his birthday is coming weeks before, and he makes a HUGE deal of it when it actually comes around. He’s just showing off and making a big deal about himself all day and he uses it to get his way whenever he can. He’s very full of himself all day, really, but after his RTTE development, it’s a little more of a part he’s jokingly playing, he’s more self aware than he was before. Still a pain in the butt though lol.
Fishlegs: He gets a little awkward receiving presents. What he really wants is a quiet day he can spend meditating, reading, or gardening. He loves spending time with the gang, though, and they try to do that kinda stuff with him. They’re not all very good at it, and it normally descends into chaos, but it means a lot to him that they try and he’s just happy to be spending time with them. Ruff & Tuff: Unlike everyone else, we actually see an episode on the twins’ birthday. (Late RTTE, it’s the Thorston Trials episode. I don’t actually remember the name of the episode, but Gruffnut is there) Based on that, they make a big deal out of it, and they organize a big celebration, and they walk around talking in weird fancy voices the whole time. They have so much fun, and they definitely use their birthdays to get stuff like Snotlout. (Like if they want someone to get up and get something for them bc they’re comfortable or smth and the gang is like no they’re like ??? on our birthday??? do you even care about us?)
Gobber: Pre-HTTYD 2, he and Stoick would have drinks in the evenings, the gang would get him a present and Hiccup would try and handle more chores around the shop to get him some more time to relax. After HTTYD 2, everything looks basically the same, except he’s having drinks with Valka, Eret, and the gang. His birthday is one of the days where he misses Stoick the most, and they go out of there way to distract him and spend lots of time with him.
This was so much fun, I really loved doing this omg. I’m so sorry it took me forever to get around to this, my ask box has been a little backed up lately, and for some reason I haven’t been doing them in any kind of order, I’m just jumping around them. I’m an idiot lol.

let's go with the basics
Hiccup and Fishlegs
Hiccup:
Tumblr media
The main character ever. You ever get done so dirty by fate that you take it into your own hands. You ever get beaten down further and further over and over again and still refuse to give up even when you don't remember what you're fighting for. You ever choose kindness no matter how hard that choice becomes. You ever accidentally become an aroace icon.
Fishlegs:
Tumblr media
Much the same, with the notable exception of having done One wrong thing in his life. This is the only time I will hold technically causing the apocalypse against him, because what alloromantic hasn't inadvertently ended the world as he knows it through a long and convoluted series of unfortunate events involving a love letter, some honey, someone else's rock, and the viking slave trade. I assume. Are there any alloromantic folks in the fandom who can confirm?
Neither of them are the best character individually because they are also the best friends ever. You ever have a friendship so strong that you will bend and break fate to save each other? Burn the world down? Carry its weight on your shoulders? Just because of how much you love your friend? They work better as a part of a dynamic because to separate them is a violation of the Geneva conventions and so constitutes a war crime.

Heyyyyy!!!!
You said you had ideas about the HTTYD characters and what d&d classes they would fit into best, and I’d love to hear all about that dude
(please talk to me like I’m 5 I have no d&d knowledge lol)
This has been in my imbox WAY TOO LONG I'm so sorry
Ngl I considered making them all Drakewarden Ranger multiclasses but where would the fun be in that?
Hiccup: Drakewarden Ranger/Battlesmith Artificer Multiclass
Drakewarden for obvious reasons. They get a drake (which isn't technically a true dragon but it does fall under dragons) which are essentially pets. Artificer because Hiccup is constantly creating and I feel this class fits him pretty well. Struggled with the subclass a bit but I'm fairly confident in my choice
Astrid: Battle Master Fighter
Are Fighters considered basic? Yes, but don't let that hold you back. The Battle Master studies EVERYTHING involved in battle, from theory to practical and everything in between. I think it fits Astrid well because of her warrior nature, i actually considered making her a Champion Fighter but decided that this subclass fit her slightly better. Hiccup makes her weapons :)
Fishlegs: Scribe Wizard/Drakewarden Ranger multiclass
Tbh, this one is in the same boat as the twins. Wizards love learning abt their specific subject. Scribes are the most bookish of all Wizards and make great use of their spellbook. Drakewarden Ranger because he was arguably the most obsessed with dragons before Hiccup. Also I want them to bond over their Drakes
Snotlout: Dwarf Glamour Bard
"But Quinn, no one else has a race yet, why does Snotlout have one?" because I have a better grasp on what I imagine his backstory would be than the rest of them. Also I think having a Dwarf Bard is cool. He's a college of Glamour bard because he's canonically a good writer and singer, which also implies he's good with words which these bards definitely are.
Ruffnut & Tuffnut: Trickery Domain Clerics
Are multiple clerics of the same subclass redundant? Yes. But I'm doing which classes I think they'd be I'm not building a balanced party. They'd be pretty similar to Canon, and would also follow Loki. Basically nothing changes except they now have magic and makes it everyone else's problem.
Arnora (my oc): Tiefling Spore Druid
If my url and pfp didn't make it obvious, I love Tieflings. That is the main reason Arnora is a tiefling, along with the fact that I love the idea of her and Dwarf!Snotlout dancing together. The spore Druid is the closest I could get to healer (that I felt fit Arnora) without making her a life Cleric.
I'd any other D&D fans have other thoughts, please share!

Whumptober Day 5: Collapsed Building
Summary: Written for Whumptober Day 5. Also takes place in my Httyd Zombie AU. Main fic to follow. Sometimes Hiccup's plans can get a little out of hand and when it does, sometimes his Riders can get into trouble for that. This time, it's Fishlegs and Tuffnut.
Rating: Teen and up
Characters: Fishlegs, Tuffnut, Ruffnut, Hiccup, Toothless
Pairing: None
Words: 1 354
Fandom: How to Train Your Dragon
Prompt: Failed escape + Rescue
Whumpee: Fishlegs, Tuffnut, Hiccup
Author’s Notes: This started out as Fishlegs whump, but then suddenly Tuffnut got whumped, but then Hiccup demanded a scene... So three whumpees for one prompt! It's been fun!
Constructive criticism is appreciated!
Enjoy!
Day 5 and I’m honestly getting really tired of all this tagging.
Ao3
-------------------------------------------------------------------
At the same time, they hear the explosion going off, they can feel the whole building rumbling beneath their feet.
Fishlegs and Tuffnut don't know what exactly is happening downstairs on the ground floor, but when everything starts to crumble around them, they know at the very least that it's gone horribly wrong.
Hiding away from the Dragon Hunters, Fishlegs was hoping to take care of an injury, a nasty gash on a leg from a terrible fall combined with an unlucky landing. It's been bleeding quite profusely and his shoe and sock are both stained.
Tuffnut had found him and wanted to help him out. But then the explosion happens and the two know they need to run.
So Tuffnut pulls Fishlegs up to his feet and takes his weight upon his shoulders to the best of his ability.
"Come on, we can make this. We can make this, right?!" Tuffnut huffs and puffs, not quite as strong as his friend, but still attempting to carry him to safety.
They are trying to make it to the stairs while the floor is collapsing beneath them and the ceiling is caving in above them. Fishlegs still tries to make it on his own strength, but his leg hurts terribly and he needs Tuffnut to get out of this situation.
It is terrifying, they can feel their hearts pounding in their ears and the adrenaline threatening to slow them down. The floor and walls are rumbling and crumbling and their legs struggle to keep them up.
But they have to outrun the destruction, they have to somehow get to the ground floor from the fourth floor in time without getting hit or falling while the building shakes with such force as if an earthquake has taken hold of its foundations.
"There it is!" Fishlegs shouts, spotting the staircase down. But then part of the ceiling comes down and the two abruptly stop to not be flattened. The debris blocks their way down the stairs.
"No!"
"Oh no!"
"What do we do now?!" Tuffnut asks, gaze shooting into every possible direction to find another way out. Except, those stairs were the only ones off this level.
"I don't know, Tuff. I don't know!" Fishlegs answers, feeling the creeping dread and panic at the possibility that they may not be getting out of this predicament alive.
Another, fiercer rumbling comes following a second explosion and both Riders are thrown off their feet. Keeping their balance is impossible.
"Hey! Look here! Fishlegs, bro!" A familiar grating voice calls to them in urgency and they look over to the broken windows to find Ruffnut on top of Barf and Belch. Each head gurgles at Tuff to make him come running.
Without another word, they struggle back up to their feet and hurry over. Fishlegs hobbles over while Tuffnut runs. If they can just make it to Ruffnut and Barch, they'll be safe.
But just as they are about to reach the window, a large chunk falls and hits the male twin on the head.
"No, Tuff!"
"Tuffnut!"
Ruffnut and Fishlegs both shout as Tuffnut crumples to the floor unceremoniously. Blood immediately escapes the wound and stains his hair and the concrete floor.
Jumping off her head of the Zippleback, Ruffnut runs over, shielding her own head even though that will really do nothing against the falling debris.
"Get on the dragon, Fishlegs!" She shouts at her friend, who had collapsed onto the ground as well with his loss of support.
While he continues to Barf and Belch, getting up and dragging his injured leg, Ruff picks up her brother from the back, turning him onto his back, hooking her arms under his shoulders and wrapping a forearm of his around his middle for leverage before dragging him towards the open window.
She's in too much of a rush to do it carefully, but she manages to get him to the dragon. As Fishlegs gets on one head, she maneuvers Tuffnut up on Barch's back before getting on her head and together they escape. It is only seconds later that the entire fourth floor is gone.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Back at camp, the Dragon Riders are gathered around Tuffnut. He's lying on a sleeping bag with a pillow and his head wound bandaged up neatly.
"And he'll be okay, right?" Ruffnut asks Hiccup, who sits on a chair opposite to Fishlegs'. His foot is up on Hiccup's seat between his thighs as he works on disinfecting and stitching up the gash, his pant leg rolled up as far as it will go. His wound is deep enough to require stitches if they want to prevent an infection.
Pulled out of his concentration, Hiccup briefly looks up to her before returning to what he's doing.
"We won't know, Ruff. Not until he wakes up." Hiccup tells her and since it's been only an hour, Tuff's chances of being perfectly fine are still relatively high.
Ruffnut isn't too comforted by his answer, but she takes it knowing that it's a realistic one. She sits down on the sleeping bag next to Tuff, sighing. She draws her knees up and wraps her arms around them. Astrid kneels by her and places a hand on her shoulder.
Hiccup is quiet as he takes care off Fishlegs' leg, occasionally glancing the twins' way. There is a deep frown on his face and his vision is going blurry. He has to wipe at his eyes with his sleeves.
"Are you okay, Hiccup?" The man before him asks, noticing the watery eyes.
"I'm fine." Hiccup answers after swallowing the lump in his throat.
He finishes working on Fishlegs' injury and bandages it up. By then Tuffnut wakes up long enough for him to be hugged by his sister and be showered with well-wishes from the Dragon Riders. He's also diagnosed with an awful concussion, but he seems fine otherwise and all he needs is enough rest.
Good news for sure, but still one of the Dragon Riders quietly leaves the group after the most likely diagnosis is shared. He needs to be alone.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Hiccup feels like he can't breathe.
His friends had been in that building.
The one he wanted to blow up to be rid of this Dragon Hunter operation wasn't as empty as he thought it was. Fishlegs and Tuffnut were in there, one of them injured and the other simply trying to help him.
He nearly killed them. Two of his best friends, his only remaining loved ones that he swore to protect for as long as he may live. He nearly killed them with his own two hands.
This thought and the accompanying blame are too much for him to carry and he slides down the way as tears erupt from his eyes and sobs from his throat.
His knees are drawn up and his elbows rest on them as his hands grab a tight hold on his hair, just shy of pulling out actual clumps. He's so upset with himself, so angry.
How could he do that? They rely on him. On him! He can't make reckless mistakes such as this! If he doesn't step up soon, there will be no one left and he'll have failed as both a friend and a leader.
The other Dragon Riders watching over Tuffnut, it's Toothless who finds him sobbing all alone. He's made sure he was far away enough from the others to make sure they won't catch him in this state of mind. But Toothless is never far away, he can't hide these moments from him.
Cooing sadly at the state he finds his Rider in, the dragon invites himself into Hiccup's personal space and pushes his head into his arms, hoping to break him out of his little bubble of despair. It works and Hiccup throws his arms around the Night Fury's head, who lies down to let him keep his hold.
On his scales Hiccup cries and Toothless lets him, knowing that he needs to pour his heart out before he can return to the others and do what he is meant to do.

Don't worry, I take over my sleep time to read and write fanfictions. I wouldn't have time otherwise! I have an entire Word page with only links to fanfictions I still have to read! And it's all right to not read fanfictions if you don't want to. It's just an hobby among others. Anyway, you wrote fanfictions?? Now I'm curious, could I have a link, if you don't mind? Have a good night too and sorry for my grammar mistakes, english isn't my first language (btw, thank you for the likes
From this. Sorry I’m slow replying!! thanks for your wonderful messages! :)
No worries about grammar! Your English is great, and even if it weren’t, that’s no bother to me either. :) The fact that you’re communicating in a language that isn’t your first… just means you have extra skills and are even more awesome! :)
I love how dedicated you are to looking at others’ fanfictions, even creating a Word document page to make sure you remember them. That’s beautiful and cool. And I’m getting curious about what you’ve written, too!
Thanks so much for asking about my fics - this touches me! Sure, I’m happy to share! I tend to post all fics on tumblr and FFN, with FFN being my primary hub. On tumblr I use the tag #my fanfiction and tag all stories by their title. My FFN profile is kingofthewilderwest.
I’m so so so so so SO touched when anyone reads or interacts with my fics (though since I write casually, I ask no constructive criticism
THE VIGILANTE’S WAR
HTTYD. YEAR: 2014. LENGTH: 57,110 WORDS. A mysterious, antagonistic dragon rider dubbed “the Vigilante” crosses paths with Hiccup, and her increasingly violent actions appear to be leading to war against Berk.
He tightened his hands, loosened them again. Breathed in, breathed out. He could feel himself stooped in the dirt, his shoulders hunched over his head, his knees buried in the ground and tucked underneath his torso. His neck was bent low close to the earth, providing him a good view of his hands and the ground and nothing else.
Well, and the blood.
That can’t possibly be all mine.
- PROLOGUE: FROM OUT OF THE HAZE
HTTYD 2′s original drafts had Valka as the main antagonist. I found this so interesting that I decided to rewrite HTTYD 2 - with a few of my own spins - on this concept. One of my most well-known fics, “The Vigilante’s War” is where I’ve gotten the most thorough reviews and most emotional reactions.
THE VIGILANTE’S LEGACY
HTTYD. YEARS: 2014-2016. LENGTH: 20,546 WORDS. There’s been four years of war between three factions. Drago’s army. The Vigilante and her dragons. Berk and their allies. But now, Chief Hiccup believes there’s a way to end the conflict. Sequel to “The Vigilante’s War.”
Hiccup spoke up. Cleared his voice. Tapped his pointer finger apprehensively on the cell’s iron door. “You said we were making a mistake.” Might as well speak straight to the point of his visit. “Something about ‘you and every one of your warriors are making a mistake’ or – or something like that.”
For a moment Hiccup wondered if Valka actually would reply. The calculating gaze she gave him from the corner of her prison certainly did not seem a positive sign. However, then, with a steady, lilting cadence to her voice, she succinctly affirmed, “I did.” Just those two words. Nothing more.
- VIII. THE MISTAKES OF WAR
It’s unfinished; I haven’t updated because I ran out of steam and didn’t receive enough reader feedback encouraging me to continue. Though I did have a very vivid final chapter in mind… that I still love… which I never got to…?
MEMOIRS
HTTYD. YEARS: 2015-2016. LENGTH: 44,289 WORDS. My ongoing collection of drabbles for HTTYD. Angst, pain, comfort, humor, crossovers, crack, it’s all there. Favorites include “Family Portrait,” “Stubble,” “Buffcup the Brawny,” and “Remember When.”
He held her hand softly, one wrinkled hand laid gently on top of another. It was just her and him now in the house all alone – for their children had left on a voyage with the grandkids, and would not be back for a week yet, if even two. It evoked the quietness of the old days, back before they were old, back during the times when they were newlyweds and younger even than their grandchildren were today. Oh, but the smell of her hair was just as refreshing now as when it was blonde.
- REMEMBER WHEN
DINNER AT DRAGON’S EDGE
HTTYD. YEAR: 2015. LENGTH: 5,452 WORDS. The gang’s settling in at Dragon’s Edge. To make sure everything operates smoothly, Hiccup suggests a chore rotation system. That means everyone has to do their fair share of the cooking… but it doesn’t mean everyone is a fair cook.
“Oh my gods, is this dinner or what the rats threw away?” Snotlout exclaimed, terrified at the Unidentified Edible Object before him.
Tuffnut picked it up with one experimental hand and held it out before him at a safe distance. People would have held poisonous snakes or bloodied torture devices more cheerily. Squinting his eyes and peering carefully at the peculiar specimen pinched between his fingers, rubbing under his chin with his other, free hand, Tuffnut remarked, “Looks something like what Barf and Belch poop out after they get sick and…”
- 1. ASSIGNING JOBS
This humorous fic I think is where I do best capturing HTTYD character personalities and interactions.
[SUPER]HERO THE HARD WAY
HTTYD. YEARS: 2014-2017. LENGTH: 86,566 WORDS. In a modern world where Berk is full of superheroes battling the League of Outcasts, power-less Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third struggles to receive appreciation for who he is. Through his crime-fighting journey, Hiccup learns that, while he might not have powers, he can become a Hero the Hard Way.
“I wasn’t born with anything. Don’t have anything. I’m the son of Chief Stoick “Skullcrusher” and I don’t have anything. Not even a superpower to turn objects purple. Which frankly would be completely pointless but at least it would have been something.“
He realized he was babbling and promptly shut his mouth. He looked over at Fishlegs, who appeared to be wordlessly processing the information. The teenager appeared baffled moreso than anything else, which at least meant he was not outright rejecting him.
“So you’re going to train to be a superhero… and you don’t have any powers? I got that right?”
“You got that right.”
“Wow.” Fishlegs said.
Hiccup waited for more.
“That’s actually really cool.”
- CHAPTER THREE: SIDEKICKED
This started as me intending to write one crack chapter. It turned into me envisioning a ROB / DOB modern AU where all characters were superheroes. The final product became a retelling of HTTYD 1′s basic concept: Hiccup gaining his peers’ approval despite being different. Somehow, despite me 70% adlibbing by the seat of my pants (should I be admitting this?), I had great fun. And it brought in the most reviews, follows, and favorites of any of my posted stories! Thanks for the reads and support, everyone!!!
RESET OR RESUME
UT. YEAR: 2016-2017. LENGTH: 85,841 WORDS. Gaster’s research unlocks the secret of time travel. After the Royal Scientist’s untimely end, one of Gaster’s colleagues - Sans - finds himself with the power to Reset. Confronted with unpleasant timelines and dangerous choices, Sans must decide how to navigate through time… if it’s worth resetting for a better future, continuing with hope for the present, or simply giving up.
No longer timid and silent, the human happily babbled all sorts of nonsense to Sans, everything from how to bake snow pies to how weird Sans’ skull looked to how beautiful the ribbon in their hair was to their opinions of Papyrus’ ‘battle body’ to how their mom didn’t like the color black to their personal opinion of ferrets to a long narrative of their encounter with a snail-loving old lady they met on the other side of the Ruins door. Everything could be the topic of a conversation. There was no filter and even less sense of restraint for this child.
“How are you a SKELETON?” their happy little high-pitched voice squeaked. They flew gallantly over a twig that rested, flat, on the surface of the snow. Powder flew everywhere as they landed heavily into the snowbank. “That means – that means you should be DEAD, you know!”
“who says i’m not dead?” Sans trolled with a wink.
With a shrieking giggle, they exclaimed, “Don’t be silly! Only ghosts are dead!”
“i could be a skeleton ghost.”
“No you – no you can’t.” The human seemed to be quite confident about their knowledge in paranormal metaphysics. “You can be a skeleton. You can be a ghost. But nobody – NOBODY – can be a skeleton ghost.”
“is that so?”
“YES so! You CAN’T be both. That would be wrong.” Maybe the human mentally categorized skeletons and ghosts as separate Halloween creatures, ensuring they were mutually exclusive concepts. It was always challenging to comprehend a child’s train of logic. “Except…” and now the child paused, leaning down and tugging at the sleeve of their sweater. Something thoughtful – at least as much as one so young could be thoughtful – passed over their eyes. They cocked their head to the side and stared at Sans. In the same sort of innocence with which they had talked about ferrets, the human inquired, “…can ghosts also be dust?”
- 5. KNOCKS [[File 5.2 IH-20150701-3-3]]
I have particular fondness for this fic. I spent more energy and care with this than any other I’ve posted. Drenched it through with UT lore. Edited and revised thoroughly. Had two beta readers examine my ASL for accurate representation. I wrote extensive outlines that were several page long color-coded charts, had all this meticulous structuring going on…
The problem was, this was an impossibly ambitious project. Life got in the way, too. The 85,841 words here aren’t close to the end of Part 1. The final two Parts were going to explain the weirdness within Part 1 (the story doesn’t begin in chronological order - it gets pieced together like a puzzle). What I planned to write would have included a complex characterization arc for Sans, every human child that’s visited the underground, and multiple resets containing main character deaths… until the story would end with Sans confronting Frisk in the Genocide Route.
Hopefully, despite the incompleteness, this is enjoyable from its comedy to its angst! I would at least encourage people to read the first few chapters! Or “Socks” - an entire chapter devoted to Sans and Gaster pulling sock pranks on each other.
SOMEHOW THEY’RE STILL OFFICERS
FMAB. YEAR: 2018-2019. LENGTH: 6,036 WORDS. Ahhhhhh yes. Team Mustang. The hand-selected, elite group of military officers who effectively spend their time… doing nonsense.
Everyone was scrambling at once. Mustang rushed forward to greet their guest, perfect composure only broken by the fast pace at which he moved. In fact the colonel’s posture was almost a proud enough display to make his lack of shirt go unnoticed. But Falman chucked his cards away at the same time he tried to salute; Breda was ducking from Falman’s sudden card shower; Fuery was launching pants and underwear in Havoc’s face; and Lieutenant Hawkeye, obviously abashed to be in this room at all, was covering her eyes with her hand in what was either her life’s longest sigh, or a pathetic attempt to hide her face and identity.
- WE WERE JUST PLAYING CARDS
My collection of FMA drabbles, particularly stories of Team Mustang shenanigans. Prompts / requests welcome for more adventures!
I have a few other drabbles posted, too. I also have unfinished chapters of Voltron fanfictions on my computer that I could share, too? Maybe I should? I’m currently working on several Royai fanfictions, other FMA drabbles, and a longer Deponia fanfiction.
Thank you again for being so nice and connecting with me over fanfiction and fandom and FMA and more. You’re a really wonderful and cool person and you made my day.

Hi, I’m back and ready to ramble a little about my impressions on HTTYD3: The Hidden World. Spoilers ahead.
First of all, I have to talk about a couple of things: all of you know how much HTTYD means for me, I’m writing this three days after watching the movie and relying on my notes and my memory (which is not bad but isn’t perfect either) and I watched the movie in 4DX 3D, so it was much more inmersive. Ok, here we go:
I really liked the DreamWorks logo, it seemed fitting with the style of the movie, or maybe just an hommage for Cressida Cowell. Either way, it looked great. But, no “This is Berk” intro? I have  the feeling that there was something off in this movie. I’ll get to that towards the end. Anyway, although weird, that intro worked fine and I just love see them fighting. My only problem is that we’ve seen them working as a team lots of times. But maybe the armors make that a little more difficult. I don’t know. And I don’t know why they have to take ALL of the rescued dragons to Berk. Yes, it’s the new dragon sanctuary, but Berk is not suited for ALL those dragons. There were merely five or six native species, so is not a perfect habitat for the rest of them. I mean, Toothless, as the Alpha, could have set the sanctuary in a group of islands, so there’ll be no space problem. Also, most of Berk are new houses. Who is these people? You don’t duplicate your population in just a year. Or the houses are for the dragons? Moving on, I don’t really get why Hiccup and Astrid don’t want to get married. I thought that was something that was going to be worked out (if I recall correctly, Astrid was the one who had the problem) but that just dissappeared (just like the “working as a team” problem and the “you’re nothing without Toothless”). As you can see, my main problem is that the story throws you a lot of different elements but then most of them are forgotten, and some are very important regarding the end.
Grimmel was really well animated and I liked his backstory, it was so clever to have a villain like that. But I think I’ve grown accostumed to the DreamWorks series, where a villain is introduced, hated and conquered in a group of episodes and the finales run about 40 minutes at least. But movies can do that too, they can tell a great story in less than two hours, and I feel like we should have seen more of Grimmel, and Drago and the hunters in general. I would have prefer to skip Drago and have Grimmel in the two movies.
I’m going to pause here and talk about the characters. Hiccup was ok. He’s the same dork with insecurities and he seems to have learnt a lot after the Drago fiasco. It looks like he’s being a good chief (except for the dragon overpopulation) and I loved to see him at the forge again. His armor is a little odd, I prefer the HTTYD2 one, but his other clothes were so cool. Infant Hiccup is so cute and I loved seeing him in two and not just one flashback. The Nadder plushie was a good touch, but I was sure it was lost at the sea long ago. Astrid... oh, how to put it? I feel like, in these last two movies, she’s been more like a hand to hold or something like that. Yes, she has some great action scenes, but I’d like to see more of her, her family and her relationship with Stormfly and her new General Hoff status. Just more. Her clothes are a little off too, and I’m talking about the hair. She’s a warrior, and long flowing hair doesn’t look fitting. Also, wasn’t she wearing a ponytail in the first poster? Her hairstyles are a current problem. Her wedding dress is ok, more traditional viking, but I’m ok with that and I’m looking forward to the furried cape and all the metal stuff. But then, at  the end, after at least five years after all, she has only changed her vest (which is blue and beatiful) and has no bangs! Astrid without bangs. Seriously? Of course she’s still going to look amazing after having two kids, but I expected her clothes to be quite different. I’m not sure if I want to cosplay that version. Well, just a rant more about clothes and I’m done. Even though I think Grimmel was so interesting, I just don’t get his clothes, with little belts just like Hiccup (ok, ok,  it’s because they share a simmilar story) and that long cloack, which works fine for the character, but if they had given him longer hair, he would look like he’s from a videogame. The gang suffers a lot from the lack of time, but I’m going to start with the twins. They have a lot of screen time and although I don’t care much about Tuffnut talking with Hiccup (if Fishlegs is really his best friend, it should have been him the one that talks about the wedding), Ruffnut was great. They really gave Kristen an opportunity to shine. My only problem is that she seems to have forgot about Eret. She says that all the guys are in love with her, but we don’t see any of that, nothing that reminds us that at least two guys are fighting over her, because Snotlout is now in love with Valka (ugh) and Fishlegs just exists for comic relief. But she choses Fishlegs because he’s sensitive, when we all know that Snotlout is quite sensitive too. I would have left her with Snotlout and Fishlegs with Heather, but that’s my opinion. Eret is just there to share information about Grimmel (just like Stoick did with Drago) and he looks like he don’t belong there when everyone is in armor and wings in the last battle. Valka was good. She did her part and had some good animation.. And Stoick was good too. I still think that we saw a kinder side of him, but it works with the story. And I have to mention Spitelout, as I was quite happy to see him around and I almost lost it when he talked. Ye olde Tennant. Yes, I’ve been watching Doctor Who lately.
Now, the elephant in the room. I’m not a fan of the Light Fury. I don’t like characters that are just there looking pretty. And I really thought that she was working for Grimmel. That’d have been a more interesting story. But no, her only purpose in the story is to take away Toothless, so... and she looks so smooth and shiny with a cute little nose so I can even take her seriously when she’s angry. She’s just boring and forgettable.
As I’m following my own notes, I have to talk about the dragon mating rituals, which I didn’t see or cared about before this movie, and I have to ask, what’s with the chicken dance, Hiccup? But, hey, this part was funny, I guess.
When Grimmel attacks Berk, I was quite sure it was a dream, but then, everything is on fire. What they don’t explain is if the whole island is burned to the ground or just the village. If the island is still all right, they could have moved on again after they bid goodbye to the dragons. Talking about the scene, I understand that it’s more emotional for Hiccup and Toothless, but we’ve seen this lots of times in the series and it was far more heartbreaking. Maybe it’s because we’ve already seen that or because they should have sent Toothless away and only say goodbye to their dragons AFTER finishing battling with the Hunters. They don’t explain how they get rid of them. I guess having ALL the dragons, means sending ALL the dragons to the Hidden World, so the Hunters won’t have anything to hunt. Talking about the Hidden World, it was pretty, with some Avatar/Trollhunters vibes at the begginning but I liked it more and more as they were moving on inside the cave.
Now with the ending. My problem with this story is that is too much sugar-coated. This is HTTYD. Here, you loose limbs and parents. And Hiccup doesn’t loose his best friend. In the books, all the dragons go to the sea to sleep until it’s safe for them to go above and, if I recall correctly, Toothless visits Hiccup year after year. I was expecting Hiccup to bring his first-born to meet Toothless, as he’s been visiting him, but it’s clear that it has been at least five or six years until they met again, but they met again at everything is fine. Everything felt so rushed and weird. It’s like the story needed over 10 minutes more. I’m up for an extended version, just like Lord of the Rings, so we have more than two hours of movie and everything gets and end. I feel like there was something else, something we didn’t get to see, and that might be on the new short, but it makes the story suffer. And it’s my opinion too, but this movie felt more market oriented that willing to do something brave or different.
I have mixed feelings with this movie. The main part was good, but I expected more from the last movie of the franchise, the last time we’re going to see this characters. Time will tell. I’m going to watch it again at the end of the month, when it’ll finally be screened in Spain (this time with subtitles, I understood everything except part of Ruff’s ramblings) and maybe this time I’ll like it more and I’ ll be able to appreciate other aspects of it. It’s a good movie, but it’s far from perfect. And it’s not the perfect way to end this.

Animated Life Lesson #1: Understanding
Understanding (noun): an agreement regulating joint activity or settling differences; a state of cooperative or mutually tolerant relations between people
Tumblr media
In honor of the new season airing on Netflix this week, our first animated life lesson-understanding-will be discussed through its extensive portrayal in Dragons: Race to the Edge.
How to Train Your Dragon and its sequel are some of my favorite movies of all time.  The stories are epic, the characters are complex and interesting, and there are a ton of unique and amazing dragons.  The world building is fantastic, the animation is well done, and the soundtrack is one I can listen to over and over again.  (This one and this one are especially good for keeping me motivated when I’m running.)  Furthermore, the themes of friendship, sacrifice, and bravery are all thoroughly explored, giving children and adults alike characters to cheer for as they explore the dangers of their world and come into their roles as dragon riders.
Because I am so in love with the movies, I was ecstatic to learn that there is an animated series for this franchise.  DreamWorks Dragons is set between the first and second films and serves as a narrative bridge between the two theatrical releases.  The first two seasons, subtitled Riders of Berk and Defenders of Berk, respectively, aired on Cartoon Network, and while these seasons see the discovery of new dragons and new dangers, explore the complications of the new friendship between Vikings and dragons, and establish plenty of new character development, it’s the newest incarnation of the show that really shines, easily on par with the films in terms of story and visuals.
Tumblr media
Dragons: Race to the Edge is produced by Netflix, and the fact that Netflix was willing to take it over says something about the greatness of the show and the franchise.  Netflix has a good record (at least so far) of producing well-written and entertaining original content, and Race to the Edge is certainly no exception. This newest offering in the series is set just a year before HtTYD 2, and Hiccup, Astrid, and the other riders have certainly changed over the past few years.
Tumblr media
But at their core, they remain their same original Viking selves. There was no attempt to drastically redesign any of the main cast—or any of the secondary cast, either—to gain more viewers, and that makes the show feel like a true continuation of the films. Just as importantly, the feelings of friendship between the riders are still intact and still realistic, with the riders spending as much time bickering with one another as they do fighting the true villains.  More importantly, though, the friendships between the riders and their dragons are stronger than ever.
Tumblr media
Although there are a lot of things to love about these films and the show, the relationship between Hiccup and Toothless is the real heart of this whole story.  It’s more than a boy-and-his-dog type of story; Hiccup and Toothless are as close as brothers, with each willing to step into the line of fire to save the other.  They’ve saved each other’s lives countless times, and the love between the two of them is beautiful to see.  At the risk of sounding cheesy, their relationship is still just as magical as it was at the beginning, when Hiccup chose to defy his entire way of life to save a dangerous dragon and in return earned a lifelong friend.  If not for the feeling of sameness—if not for Hiccup being able to understand Toothless’s feelings of fear and helplessness in that pivotal moment—things wouldn’t have changed.  Sure, Hiccup would’ve been praised by his tribe, but that would’ve only changed things for him during his time.  Instead, his desire to understand dragons changed the lives of every Viking in his tribe for now and for forever.  It was Hiccup’s willingness to see things from a different point of view and to try to do things in a new way that changed his entire world and earned him the undying loyalty of one of the world’s fiercest dragons.
Tumblr media
Hiccup’s drive to learn about dragons as more than just the enemy was unprecedented for a Viking. All knowledge of dragons up to that point was based on how best to defeat them without getting eaten or burned to a crisp.  But Hiccup wanted to understand dragons for the unique and fascinating creatures they truly are.  Maybe it was because he was ostracized by his village, maybe it was because he was nosy, maybe it was a bit of both, but Hiccup’s actions demonstrated a maturity and a wisdom beyond his years, and it has certainly turned out well for him.
In RttE, Hiccup continues to encounter new types of dragons, and although his first purpose is always to ensure the dragon’s safety, the second is to learn about the creature.  He still hasn’t lost that desire to learn about dragons, and it’s become second nature to study new dragons as thoroughly as possible; this allows Hiccup and the other riders to protect themselves from any potential threats but also allows them to help the dragons to not only survive everything from other dragon attacks to hunters and natural disasters, but to thrive.  The riders build structures, relocate threats, and generally care for the dragons they encounter, and in doing so, they continue to see that humans and dragons aren’t all that different.
Tumblr media
Sure, they’re physically different, and they’re capable of drastically different things, but all they really want out of life is safety and companionship.  It’s easy to see these similarities between the riders and their own dragons, but it also becomes apparent as the riders become more accustomed to dealing with wild dragons, who are typically only causing trouble because their home or their loved ones are threatened.  It’s interesting that it takes a group of teenagers to understand that dragons aren’t the enemy when generations of Vikings refused to see the truth, and now that same group of teenagers is essentially reinventing the culture. Because of their understanding of the dragons, Hiccup and the other riders have not only cemented their place in Viking history, they’ve managed to create peace after centuries of fighting.
Years of warfare have also created an interesting dynamic within Viking society that calls for another kind of understanding: an understanding of physical disability. Dragon attacks are vicious, and there are numerous Vikings who are shown with missing limbs as a result.  Gobber, as an example, is missing both a hand and a leg as the result of battles with dragons, and yet he’s one of their fiercest warriors.  Bucket and Mulch are likewise missing hands, yet they’re successful fishers and farmers. Toothless loses part of his tail thanks to his capture at the hands of Hiccup, but once he’s able to fly again with Hiccup’s help, he’s just as dangerous as ever, perhaps even more so because now he has someone to look out for him and help him perform more amazing attacks.  And of course, Hiccup himself has lost part of a leg, the price he paid for defeating the Red Death.
Tumblr media
Since Hiccup’s loss comes at the end of the first film, the impact is not well-explored at the time. However, it’s clear that the loss is seen by the other Vikings as a badge of honor, and Hiccup even jokes about being able to redesign a better replacement leg than the one Gobber has made for him.  It’s a drastic change from most stories about physical disability, where the loss of a limb or of function is seen as tragic and, to some degree, problematic.  But to the Vikings, it’s just a fact of life.  Having been injured in a dragon attack is par for the course, and it’s great that these characters get to be ‘normal’ without having to conform to the notions of society.  For the Vikings, being disabled is normal, and their society reflects that.
Tumblr media
We get to see Hiccup’s reaction to the loss of his leg throughout the seasons of the television show. Not only has he upgraded Gobber’s replacement, he’s specifically designed his leg to work with the attachment on Toothless’s tail, and on top of that, he eventually modifies it to be a multipurpose prosthetic, with the ability to switch between a walking version and a riding version that fits better with Toothless’s tail, as well as a bladed version for walking on ice.  Although I’m sure he’s not glad that he lost his leg, Hiccup has been able to use his ingenuity to design a prosthetic that works for him just as well as his real leg ever did.  Probably better, in fact, since there are numerous times throughout the show where Hiccup’s metal leg manages to save his life, either directly or through using it as a weapon.  Likewise, Gobber has adapted a number of different attachments for his hand, allowing him to switch out tools and weapons to make his work easier.  It’s quite fun, actually, to see the different limbs these two can design and create, and it allows them to deal with their missing limbs in ways that are both useful and creative.
Tumblr media
Hiccup’s creativity doesn’t just apply to his work, it also applies to how he lives his daily life and how he interacts with his friends.  The other riders are all fun and individual characters, even the twins, who are rarely separated, and Hiccup finds creative ways for each of them to utilize their strengths and their hobbies to work as a team.  There’s an implicit understanding between each of the riders that they have different strengths and weaknesses, and while they may not always like the reality of their abilities, they always trust Hiccup to lead them in such a way that everyone plays an important role.  That doesn’t mean that there isn’t grumbling or teasing about anyone’s abilities. Snotlout in particular spends a fair amount of time making fun of Fishlegs for being a nerd about new dragons, but he’s always (begrudgingly) grateful for Fishlegs’s knowledge when they’re under attack.  Snotlout also seems to always find ways to bring up Hiccup’s missing leg, whether it be through bad puns or corrections on comments, such as when Astrid implored the other riders to put themselves in Hiccup’s shoes, to which Snotlout corrected:
Tumblr media
Even though it’s annoying, the comments are nothing more than teasing between friends who truly understand and appreciate one another.  Everyone realizes that they wouldn’t even be dragon riders without Hiccup, just as everyone realizes that they wouldn’t have become such successful riders if they weren’t able to look past each other’s differences and learn to work as a team.  There’s an understanding that even though they may irritate, aggravate, and enrage one another from time to time, they’re still a team, and they couldn’t do all the amazing and helpful things they do if they didn’t have each other.  It’s being able to understand that everyone has their flaws just as they have their gifts that allows the riders to function so well together and be the people who save both humans and dragons.
Dragons: Race to the Edge is easily one of the best animated shows offered today.  There’s enough stupid humor, exciting dragons, and amazing flight scenes to keep children interested, while adults will enjoy the deeper themes and messages along with the exciting dragons and amazing flight scenes.  This show, along with the other seasons of Dragons serve as the perfect bridge between the first and second films, seamlessly continuing the story and introducing new characters and dragons that let us explore the world more than the movies would allow.  As I mentioned before, the show is great from a visual standpoint, as close to the films as any television show I’ve ever seen, and the score manages to incorporate the main themes from the film while also introducing lovely new pieces.  What’s more, much of the main cast lent their voices to the show, including Jay Baruchel as Hiccup and America Ferrera as Astrid, which further lends to the authenticity of the series.  But it’s truly the fact that the show has managed to capture the truly capture the relationship between Hiccup and Toothless, that undefinable understanding between a boy and his dragon, that makes the series as successful as the films.  There may be new adventures, new enemies, and new friends, but it’s this connection at the core of the story that makes it perfect.
