Wearing Time: Carpe Diem and the Artistry of Anti-Fashion (Pt. 1 / 2)

In today's article, I want to tell you something about what I consider the most important and influential artist collective in avant-garde fashion.

A collective whose artists, their labels, and their design language have impressed me so much that it has completely changed my perspective on how clothing is created, what its purpose really is, and the impact it can have.

/// Carpe Diem, an avant-garde designer collective, was founded in 1996 in Perugia, Italy, by Maurizio Altieri. There are conflicting reports on the founding year, with sources mentioning 1994, 1998, and 1999 (the latter mentioned by Maurizio Amadei of M.A+ in a podcast with Lucentement). The visionary minds, particularly Maurizio Altieri, initially specialized in leather design, working with materials such as horsehide, cowhide, and anaconda.

These materials underwent intricate hand treatments, including washing, distressing, crushing, and burial in the ground for months. Carpe Diem quickly established itself as an avant-garde trailblazer, gaining recognition for its commitment to quality and craftsmanship. Originally concentrating on shoes, the brand later expanded its offerings to include clothing.

In 2006, Carpe Diem disbanded due to its increasing mainstream popularity, paving the way for other brands to follow its innovative path. This marked the peak of Carpe Diem's fame, with celebrities like Brad Pitt seen wearing their leather shirts. The surge in investor interest eventually led to Maurizio Altieri abandoning the label.

In recent years, Carpe Diem has been acquired by a Japanese company, resulting in the reissue of some designs and the introduction of new ones. However, signs indicate that Altieri and his colleagues are no longer actively involved in the design process.

Carpe Diem's influence extends to avant-garde brands like Carol Christian Poell, Boris Bidjan Saberi, Layer-0, and others, incorporating designs such as twisted seams, dropped-crotch trousers, asymmetric plackets, and J-cut pants. The brand's collections, including L'Maltieri (knitwear), Sartoria (made-to-measure), and Linea (jackets, pants, and T-shirts), aimed to diversify offerings.

The Linea collection, utilizing a 3x3 modular system, features interchangeable and conceptually connected laser-cut jackets, cotton pants, and T-shirts.

Sartoria, a customized line derived from Linea, maintains the "arte povera" aesthetic with crumpled, washed, and treated leather. Custom items required visits to a Parisian garage for fitting and digital photography, and delivery took 60 days, utilizing leather buried in the deserts of Afghanistan.

The distinctive feature of hanging garments on meat hooks pays homage to the label's origins as a leather house. The Sartoria line has evolved into the fifth line named Anatomica, propably my favorite collection of Carpe Diem.

Now, let's introduce the creative minds behind Carpe Diem in detail: Maurizio Altieri Maurizio Altieri, the visionary founder of Carpe Diem, is a perfectionist who brings an academic background in business and law to the world of fashion. His professional journey began at Chrome Hearts, where he honed fundamental skills in craftsmanship and leather treatment. In 1996, Altieri departed from Chrome Hearts to establish Carpe Diem, driven by a philosophy to craft timeless, useful, and handmade pieces from the finest materials.

Altieri's unique approach materialized through the application of distinctive treatments and washes, setting his creations apart. Notably, Maurizio Altieri rejects traditional editorials and advertising, firmly believing that the craftsmanship and quality of his pieces should speak for themselves. This commitment to craftsmanship is vividly demonstrated through a series of collections known as the "Continues Collection," showcasing an enduring dedication to the art of craftsmanship and the creation of timeless fashion experiences. Post-Carpe Diem, Altieri embarked on various projects, including m_moriabc, active in the fashion world since 2012.

Beyond demonstrating Altieri's exceptional talent for creating memorable brand names, m_moriabc is renowned for its handmade footwear crafted through special Norwegian craftsmanship. Altieri's ambitious pursuit involves capturing the essence of time itself in his creations, symbolized by the names A, B, and C, each representing distinct lines that embody aspects of the past, present, and future.

Avantindietro, launched in 2009, stands out as another notable project, offering a minimalist response to Carpe Diem's initial collection. In a collaborative effort two years later, Altieri partnered with Alessio Zero, the Italian designer behind Layer-O, to produce a small offering of shoes made from leather buried years earlier, adding a fascinating narrative to the creations.

Altieri's current venture, the art project Vnapersona, further underscores his dedication to pushing artistic boundaries. Through these endeavors, Maurizio Altieri continues to leave an indelible mark on the fashion landscape, weaving together elements of time, craftsmanship, and innovation.

Maurizio Amadei Maurizio Amadei played a pivotal role in shaping the distinctive identity of Carpe Diem's leather products, encompassing accessories and jackets. During his tenure as a designer at Carpe Diem, Amadei demonstrated a unique exploration of human anatomy, sculpting pieces to follow the lines of the body's muscles. This innovative approach not only left an indelible mark on his designs at Carpe Diem but continued to influence his subsequent work.

Following the conclusion of Carpe Diem in 2006, Maurizio Amadei founded M.A+ as a spiritual successor to the renowned "Continues Collection." The unmistakable parallels between the two collections are evident in Amadei's inaugural M.A+ collection, where a standout piece was a large shoulder bag crafted from a single seamless piece of leather—a hallmark reminiscent of Carpe Diem. The introduction of the cross motif in this collection became the emblem of Amadei's design ethos, defining sought-after pieces like the 925 Sterling Silver Cross Belt.

M.A+ seamlessly carried forward many of the distinctive design techniques for leather while integrating cozy cotton fabrics into seamless one-piece silhouettes. Amadei's deliberate use of blunt knives for cutting and processing garment hems serves as a nod to Altieri's design philosophy. The overarching objective was to envelop the wearer in a second skin—an uncomplicated construction that is seamless yet refined.

In the present day, M.A+ stands out with flawlessly crafted garments in an array of materials such as silk and satin, garnering significant attention for their luxurious functionality. The allure extends to the patterned garments within the M.A+ collection, complementing the outstanding leather and shoe products. Amadei's design DNA is deeply rooted in principles of simplicity and minimalism, with stitches employed only when necessary. This commitment to minimalism is further emphasized by the absence of tags conveying fabric or size information—a testament to Maurizio Amadei's sophistication and meticulous attention to detail in his designs.

Simone Cecchetto Simone Cecchetto, during his tenure at Carpe Diem, brought an exceptional perspective and creative flair to the realm of shoe and accessory design. Influenced by his background in body art, Cecchetto delved into the "Second Body" project of Sartoria or Anatomica at Carpe Diem, an exploration of the concept of leather as a second skin on the human body.

His visionary approach extended to innovative ideas such as integrating chips into leather jumpsuits, enabling the tracking of digital images and movements—a seamless fusion of traditional craftsmanship with modern technological elements.

Despite Maurizio Amadei's primary responsibility for leather goods, Cecchetto collaborated directly with Altieri to optimize their products. Despite lacking formal training as a shoemaker, Cecchetto's deep passion for shaping leather led him to assume the role of footwear design at Carpe Diem, allowing him to preserve the brand's legacy in shoe design.

Following the closure of Carpe Diem, Cecchetto sought refuge at Rick Owens briefly, only to realize a misalignment with Owens' avant-garde aesthetic. This experience served as a catalyst for him to chart his own course, resulting in the establishment of his label, Augusta, later renamed A Diciannoveventitre and A1923. The name Augusta pays homage to his grandmother, embodying the brand's principles of simplicity inherited from her. A1923 revolves around the principle of Wabi-Sabi, a Japanese philosophy seeking beauty in natural irregularities.

Cecchetto's unwavering dedication is evident in the meticulous sourcing and processing of leather, compensating for his lack of formal training with experimentation and craftsmanship. A1923 stands out with its niche offerings, featuring handmade leather shoes and bags for men. The collection includes distinctive elements such as boots with double zippers and sneaker-boot hybrids, adorned with worn-out laces and intense colors. This testament to Simone Cecchetto's ability to preserve creative integrity while forging his own path underscores his continued contribution to the creation of influential and unique designs.

I've been posting about Gen lately in the context of her being into witchcraft for those of you who follow my page or have seen at least multiple of my posts. I want to share with you more of my observations and why I believe that the effects of her black magic are slowly but surely starting to fade. So in this post here that's an excerpt from her Bathroom Chronicles podcast Episode 11 with Peggy Rometo (self proclaimed Intuitive expert and co-host for the Bathroom Chronicles podcast). Peggy happens to be her mom's friend that was the psychic from Gen's childhood who told her about her future husband being a producer and whatnot in this same podcast. According to her website, "A spiritual teacher and intuitive expert, Peggy Rometo is one of today’s most innovative energy experts bringing forth powerful positive changes to the world. Deepak Chopra, Donna Karan, and Demi Moore are just a few of the notable names that praise her extraordinary intuitive abilities and healing gifts.  She is the spiritual teacher that can help you discover and enhance your intuitive gifts." Hmmmm, interesting friends we have going on here don't we Gen?

In this podcast she talks about how she got breast implants "when she was 40 years old "right around when I hit 40". Given her date of birth is January 8, 1981 and her birthday being so close to the new year, it's pretty safe to say she got her implants in 2021. Based on the timeline she gave for when she got the implants versus she got them out (I would guess around a year if not a little more after she got them despite having issues show up around 6-8 months after getting them from what she described in the podcast) and the posts mentioned below, it seems she was "feeling sexier" during this time period like she said after getting the implants. According to this People Magazine article sourcing the same podcast, it was "quite a while" before she got them out. She spoke to multiple doctors prior to having them removed. This tells me she probably had them in for over a year maybe close to 2 years before she called it quits "feeling really sexy" with the implants and getting them taken out. Don't get me started on her bullshit saying it was for her, my ass Gen it was to make yourself look "sexier" for your husband too.

I mentioned some of the cringeworthy posts that have come from her and Jared's direction, including the kissing her billboard July 2, 2023 (and was reposted on his page as a photo September 18, 2023), the supposedly post sex photo from May 2022 (hit the right arrow for it if the purple dress photo is in view), the cringe TOWWN shower ad Valentine's Day 2022, and of course the noteworthy photo with a bottle of pills and dildo on the bed from July 2021 Jared took down within mere minutes of posting and then reposting cropped. Below are posts straight from the sources for your viewing pleasure (can't you sense the sarcasm here, *cough cough*).

So, where does the black magic stuff I'm talking about kick in here? They also seem to fit in with the time period she likely had the implants. I didn't really analyze the size of her breasts from that time period in her posts versus before she had kids, when she had them in, and then after to determine the exact timeline. If someone else wants to chime in here, I'm all ears ha ha. However from the info that was given in her podcast and in the People Magazine article aforementioned in this post, this fits in with the time period these posts showed up on Jared and Gen's social media profiles versus when she had the implants. I couldn't stop laughing when I heard about her having had implants she ultimately removed not even a couple years after having them. I might sound like a cold-hearted bitch for saying that but coming from the standpoint of her doing black magic, I call this karma that's starting to come her way. I believe that everything happens for a reason and her boobs "deflating" after breastfeeding, getting implants, and then losing the implants not even 2 years later cues me into the fact divine intervention is coming into play and it is not in Gen's favor.

It is becoming more clear to me Jared is a boobs man, particularly how he managed to make his way to a couple "titty bars" or "breastaurants in December 2023 in 2 different cities 2 weekends in a row. Again below for your viewing pleasure. The Tilted Kilt post is dated December 16, 2023 and is located in Las Vegas, Nevada while the Coyote Ugly post is dated December 9, 2023 the weekend he was in Nashville for the Nashcon 2023. And don't tell me it's for the wings or extraordinary drinks, come on now we all know why a lot of guys really frequent these kinds of places...

I also talked about an Anon ask post I came across with the social media behaviors coming from Jared's direction and even that of his family's. It's interesting to me looking at the timeline in which Gen got her implants versus taken out and then taking into consideration when Jared started pulling back on his likes with her content dating back to November or December 2022. Do I think it's because Gen's boobs "shrunk" is why he pulled back? No, I believe that it is because of many factors within their marriage that says things aren't going well and I think she started to feel awful cranky after she got her implants removed. Can we also talk about some of the weird kisses and also misses? Like the Celebrity Feud one from 2023 (around the 4:54 time mark), JIB also from Summer 2023 (around the 11:33 time mark), and oh god the Charleston post too from February 9, 2024. REALLY?! Married for over 14 years and y'all have kisses and misses like this? Wow.....

It seems to me that there's a reason why he has pulled back so much from her social media and it is not because he was busy working. In fact he was NOT busy for a good chunk of time last year due to the strikes so the stans can't blame him working for this. And let's talk about how during one of her AG1 video posts she claimed Jared didn't go to Idaho with her and the kids "because my husband was working" that I shared in the Bathroom Chronicles post I made here. Right, when there's an actors AND writers strike going on simultaneously he is incredibly busy at work. Liar liar, pants on fire! When you lie about things like he's busy with work when he clearly was not at work for why he didn't go on a vacation with you, that screams to me something is amiss. Also, let's not forget that podcast with Dave Hollis she was on that totally confirmed she's just not that into Jared (certainly loves his money however).

On a divine level, all of these things mentioned here, things I discussed on this timeline post, and the passive aggressive behaviors in some of her posts towards him are things proving to me that her black magic is in fact starting to fade. I mentioned before speaking to that other psychic I was instructed to make a tarot reading post (which I never mentioned this to the guy by the way) I made back on July 19, 2023 private a few days before I even saw those comments on Jensen's birthday post, let alone any screenshots of such others showed me. Months ago I was instructed to cross out or "strikethrough" this part in my post that's now private:

I was informed based on the ace and 10 of cups cards in this particular reading along with the devil card, page of wands and the 4 of cups that there will at the very least be a time of separation in their marriage. In the next part below however, I sense something may happen to Gen (or a very close call) that will bring them back together and "start over". You don't know what you got until it's gone they say...

Hmmm, seems to me your time is coming up Gen. Your black magic pleasant events "time is coming up and the unpleasant events "rush" shall start kicking in just like it will soon for another witch you consult with regularly (ahem, Danneel)...

My inspirations!

My biggest inspiration, by far, is Just Roll With It. It's a TTRPG podcast that is just so good at every aspect of story telling! Every single campaign they've done I've cried out of some kind of emotion that they make me feel. The characters are all incredible! Gillion Tidestrider is probably my favourite and everyone after that is just a close second and they're all tied with each other because they're all so amazing in their own ways.

Wildcard specifically was actually inspired most The Trickster from Prime Defenders. The story of exactly how that came to happen is a little silly and for another time. You'd think with the multiple forms and changing personality gimmick that I'd have been most inspired by Vyncent and yes there's a lot of similarities but I want to make the distinction here and now that every form Wildcard takes is still Charlie at heart. They do not become a completely different person, it just changes the way their emotions work. At their core it's still the same person.

Thank you Mutants and Masterminds for being the system I used to create Wildcard's character sheet back when I was in denial and thought I'd just play them as a character in a campaign despite having no friends available at the time to DM such a campaign. I also use those character sheets to get a good idea of building and balancing all the heroes and villains in the world (although there will be plenty of leniency based on what I think is cool and fits the story).

I've also, definitely taken a lot of inspiration from the Spiderverse films, which might come across more once the first part of the story is released. Those movies are perfection the characters are incredible the story they're telling is innovative and fresh while still falling into the feeling of a Spiderman story. I love Gwen I love Miles I love Pav I love Mayday I love Peter I love the Spot I love Miguel and I LOVE LOVE LOVE Hobie! One of the characters in my story that I'm yet to speak about yet is very similar to Hobie and I'm so excited and I love the parallels and as I write them I'm definitely gonna be pulling so much from Spiderverse Hobie's personality. Spiderman in general (most versions of them) is my favourite superhero so there will probably be a lot in my head that I don't recognise I'm taking from Spider people stories but I'm just gonna make the sweeping statement now that there will likely be similarities. I will not, however, be going into multiverse or time travel stories, at least not in the main canon story, maybe I'll do a weird little "what if" after I finish telling my story where a "balanced" and fused Wildcard meets a "corrupted" and vibrant Wildcard.

Shout-out to Marvel in general, comics and movies, I've seen a lot of that stuff so again, it'll probably just leak in without me realising.

Finally, a big thank you to all my friends who encourage/enable (in the bad way) me. I am on my shit and my shit is telling an intricate story that I am very passionate about with characters who I love and care for. Namely, all 3 of my friends on that one discord server where I first infodumped about Wildcard, Hazel, for helping me build the character sheet and helping me come up with names and also letting me info dump to you, and Mimi, for basically the same reasons as Hazel, as well as being the first person I made a superhero story for (we did an introductory session of DnD in a superhero setting. Her character will be making a cameo at some point most likely). Also everyone who's tried to help me learn how to draw because I'm not gonna lie, my only motivation there was drawing characters for this story.

This shit's happening really fast, and it's happening in a way that seems a lot more meaningful and infrastructural than something like blockchain or crypto. And why? Because I think it ultimately it gets down to the fundamental conflict of capitalism which is the struggle between capital and labor, but specifically the struggle between the fact that labor is what produces surplus value, and capital is a vampire with an unquenchable thirst for the surplus value. 

Labor doesn’t need capital, but it has to deal with capital because capital owns everything. But capital needs labor because it needs the value that labor produces, which has motivated a lot of ‘innovation’ for hundreds of years now either around managing labor (how do we control labor), extracting value from labor (how do we get more for less out of workers), or trying to do the Sisyphean task of replacing living labor with dead labor (i.e.: machinery). I think that these AI systems are in a very long line of trying to create the perpetual value machine that capital always dreams of, which is something that can produce value without being alive - without being workers, without being people.

For them, AI seems like not only the latest experiment in this quixotic task of creating a perpetual value machine, but for I think a lot of them it seems like we’ve finally cracked the nut. They see AI as finally fitting that piece in the puzzle of eliminating labor as the only true source of value in the economy.

And they’re wrong -- of course they’re wrong -- but that’s not going to stop them from trying their damnedest to force that piece into the puzzle.

Revealing My Perfect Role as an Environmental Interpreter

While being a veterinarian has always been my childhood passion, I find that taking ENVS classes has given me a method to express my love of the outdoors and nature. Although I don't envision myself truly pursuing a career in environmental interpretation, if I had to choose one, it would be something along the lines of what I share below!

As an environmental interpreter, my dream job has become a comprehensive experience that goes beyond traditional bounds. I no longer see myself as someone who only transmits information; rather, I want to be a guide who creates immersive experiences for others who are curious to discover the beauties of nature. 

When it comes to forming my dream job as an environmental interpreter, location is extremely important, and Manuel Antonio National Park in Costa Rica is the perfect place. Costa Rica is a global leader in environmentally conscious behaviour and sustainable development (Niko, 2022). The country's dedication to preserving its abundant biodiversity and its forward-thinking ecotourism programs perfectly complement my goal as a sustainable environmental interpreter. I selected Manuel Antonio National Park in Costa Rica as my dream place to fully immerse myself in a biodiverse sanctuary that reflects the serenity that my work as an environmental interpreter seeks to promote. It is a tropical haven where a symphony of nature is created by the rich fauna and the unique sounds of animals, including the howls of howler monkeys (An Insider’s Guide to Manuel Antonio National Park, 2024). Being surrounded by an array of animals is a crucial component for me, which this location includes! Therefore, this site lays the groundwork for my ideal profession by fostering a sense of connection between guests and the environment and highlighting the significance of conservation and sustainable practices.

I see myself working as a sustainable environmental interpreter, combining elements of remediation programs with sustainable systems. The objective is to create a longer-lasting, healthier environment that permits enjoyment in this moment without inflicting harm. The immense biodiversity of Manuel Antonio National Park serves as an inspiration for my work, which promotes environmental responsibility and appreciation.

A wide range of abilities is necessary to succeed as an environmental interpreter/ guide at Costa Rica's Manuel Antonio National Park. A thorough understanding of the park's biodiversity and strong communication abilities are essential for informing a wide range of people. Moreover, being flexible is essential since it lets me adjust my strategy to fit various interests, groups, and people’s learning preferences. Furthermore, authenticity and a sincere love for the environment guarantee an enjoyable and motivating experience for guests. Lastly, good communication skills, innovative teaching methods, a dedication to environmental conservation, and knowledge of emergency safety procedures are essential. 

My path is significantly aided by the ENVS*3000 course, which gives me practical experience interpreting nature for a variety of audiences. My preparation for a position where passion, authenticity, and flexibility are critical is through assignments like blog posts and podcasts. Crafting a compelling environmental narrative requires constant learning, good communication, and the capacity to engage diverse demographics. 

Costa Rica's Manuel Antonio National Park becomes a canvas for a symphony of sustainability rather than just a place. Being surrounded by the glories of nature here, I picture my work as an environmental interpreter supporting humankind's peaceful coexistence with the environment by establishing a strong bond that cuts over national boundaries and is in line with the global demand for conservation.

This is Solarpunk Prompts, a series for writers where we discuss Solarpunk as a literary, artistic, and activist movement.

Or, as RoAnna Sylva describes it: Solarpunk is a genre of ecologically-oriented speculative fiction characterized both by its aesthetic and its underlying socio-political vision.

In each episode we look at one story prompt using that genre lens, offering commentary on the prompt, some inspirations from the world today, and some considerations for writers.

Most importantly, we consider how that story might help us to better envision a sustainable civilization.

There is a full-fledged town built from a refugee camp which was set up there two decades ago. The inhabitants speak their own creole, a mix of more than five languages, and have very shaky relationships with their neighboring communities or states, each of which considers it a lawless territory and might be plotting to take over.

I think the refugee camp is a fitting place to start our prompts. They are the standard setting in our world for communities just coming through tragedy. When there is war, famine, flooding, or any number of challenges to a people they often find shelters in foreign lands, sometimes thrown together with other groups fleeing their own hardships.

Refugee stories are also plentiful in science-fiction: Superman is a refugee from Krypton, The Doctor is a refugee from Gallifrey, or Arthur Dent, a refugee from Cottington in the West Country. These are all individual stories, though, and not the camp and community we are striving for. Instead we might look to Battlestar Gallactica, or Babylon 5, or the Nantucket trilogy for examples of entire communities of refugees. And, indeed, those are vibrant and capture a bit of the colorful characters and internal conflicts that arise in such places. But Solarpunk can depart from this view of refugee camps as places of despair.

In our prompt the camp has grown into a full-fledged town. That suggests a thriving regrowth emerging from this mixed culture and reflected in their creole dialect.

Is that a realistic vision to take, though? Is this just Solarpunk being naïve and blindly optimistic?

Let's take a look to real refugee camps in South Sudan and Uganda, where the r0g_agency, a Berlin-based nonprofit, has been working with communities to help them develop innovation hubs. Five of these communities have linked together to form #ASKnet, a program that offers training in open-source hardware and software, entrepreneurship, media production, gender equality, and financial literacy. They also run repair cafes, giving hands-on experience and learning, and reducing waste and preserving natural resources.

This is just one program that is built and run by small community organizations.

How about Communitere? It was founded by individuals who saw the amazing rebuilding efforts after natural disasters like the 2004 earthquake in the Indian Ocean which caused the deadliest tsunami in history. The world responded with one of the greatest relief efforts in record time, all at once. But then medicines spoiled before they could reach the sick. Food rotted before it could find the hungry. This failure of local logistics is what inspired the organization.

What do they do? Well, they don' “intervene”. Instead, they provide spaces where communities can implement their own plans and choose from a variety of tools and models that Communitere makes available. They provide training, processes, toolkits, and space. They empower the communities to build their own futures. And now they're up and running in Haiti, Nepal, Greece, and the Philippines.

These are both stories of information sharing and empowering local communities. They succeed by building together both local talent and infrastructure and focus on sustainability.

And they mean sustainability in many forms:

environmental sustainability - processes that work with the unique local environment

economic sustainability - processes that can continue without ongoing external funding

and cultural sustainability - respecting and empowering local cultures

When you start thinking of these refugee camps as places where people are building new things, new homes, new lives, new opportunities, then the writing opportunities open up for you as well. Gone are the two dimensional sketches of a dirty camp full of broken people. These people are alive and empowered!

In a different genre setting we might lean into the shantytown aesthetic, or the lawlessness of the area might become an easy setting for crime stories. I challenge you, with this prompt, to steer clear of those well trodden paths, and focus on the community as a vibrant, living thing.

Speaking of shantytowns, I'm reminded of Cory Doctorow's setting in the book, Makers, with it's unique community of hackers, and the unique way they used language… Which brings us to the next aspect of this writing prompt: Creole.

According to Collins English Dictionary: A Creole is a language that has developed from a mixture of different languages and has become the main language in a particular place.

These are fascinating growths of blending cultures and can powerfully illustrate the fundamental aspects of a community:

who they are

what they believe in

and how they respond to a changing world

Think of the unique flavor of the Belter language in the Expanse. Every odd word choice, or word borrowed from Chinese or Indic or Slavic, is a reminder of what these people are. In some cases this unique language use even extends to meaningful gestures.

The way these languages develop is so interesting in its own right that there is an indy card game where you collaboratively create one with friends. It's called Dialect, and it won IGDN's Game of the Year in 2019 along with a host of other awards. In that game you 2-4 of your friends will create what's called an Isolation, basically a community set apart from others for some interesting reason, and then play out their history across three different ages. The game then ends with the Isolation no longer being isolated, whether for good or for bad.

As the game descriptions says: "Dialect is a game about an isolated community, their language, and what it means for that language to be lost."

It's a fascinating way to spend 3-4 hours with friends, and incredibly insightful into this exact process.

Now, before we go let's take a look at that prompt one more time:

Day 22: Killer Queen from Sheer Heart Attack

Okay, I’m not lying when I say this has been my anthem far before I was a self-proclaimed “Queen Fan”. I swear, I used to rock out to this song: sassy, tongue-in-cheek, and (before I even knew what it was) queer! 

This song is quintessential Queen, but moreover, quintessential *Freddie Mercury*. I think this is the moment when Freddie really lets that part of himself shine through. And I think there’s no way I can look at this song without noticing the queer undertones, but in such a genius way, Freddie can pull it off in 1974!

This iconic song starts with snapping, and that one sound will always conjure this song… in a way that makes you think it was always there, always in the zeitgeist of the early 70s. That’s the beauty of a particularly good song: it feels as though it is simultaneously the most innovative new thing in existence and also that it has always existed and could have never *not* existed. 

Killer Queen, says Freddie, is about a “high class call girl” and he wanted to show that classy people can be whores too. I think any interviewer asking Freddie what his songs were about were going to get whatever came to the top of his head at that moment. I don’t think he was a Bono type who sat around poring over the minutiae of his lyrics and dwelling over their impact. That’s not to say that Freddie didn’t put his heart and soul and emotions into his lyrics. But in this case, I think this song is fun and—while it may very well be about a “high class call girl” or a critique on class itself—we should all create our own unique interpretations of what it means. Interestingly enough, Freddie wrote the lyrics to this song before the melody, which was the opposite of how he normally worked.

For me, it’s about a bad-ass person (I don’t think the word queen, nor the use of the pronoun ‘she’ necessarily indicates this is a woman…) who does what they want and is both posh and trashy in equal measure, both sweet and polite and also dynamite. I happen to think this Killer Queen could be Freddie himself. Fancy clothing, perfumes, champagne, “guaranteed to blow your mind…” Well, again, we shouldn’t think too much about it. I think we all have a Killer Queen in us, anyway.

As for the music—well, on the surface, this is a catchy little single that climbed to the charts (all the way to #2 in the UK and #12 in the US) and got Queen their first stint on Top of the Pops. Interestingly, Brian May was ill during the recording of this song, so the other band members assembled the song while leaving gaps for Brian to fill in later. 

This song is hugely important for the legacy of Queen. It differentiated Queen from the other progressive rock bands of the time and launched them into a new sector, putting Freddie Mercury’s rock-theatre antics on center stage. It was a new sound, like nothing the general public had heard before. And I can only imagine that Freddie was like nothing they’d ever seen either. 

This song is very much a pop-rock song. It’s smoother than the big heavy numbers that dominated rock and roll at the time. Of course, we still have the multi-tracking harmonies in full swing, and the panning of the music from left to right, and—even though he wasn’t there for all the recording—some really wonderful and imaginative sounds from Brian’s guitar. He used his wah pedal in this song, which creates a lovely glide. 

Freddie’s voice is perfect in this because he can change it to fit the tone of the music and tell the story through the sound. The very first lines are so intriguing: “She keeps her Moet et Chandon in a pretty cabinet.” Wow, how many rock songs start like that? It’s soooo Freddie, and it captivates you entirely. “Let them eat cake, she says, just like Marie Antoinette…” Sooz Kempner, from the Queenpod podcast says “this song has a grubby decadence.” 

The little “bell” sound is so iconic after “she never kept the same address”. I will always do my fingers like Freddie did in the video. Always. And, I always have a little cheeky smile when Freddie says “if you’re that way inclliiiined.” He adds so many cute, quirky, tongue-in-cheek additions, and the backing vocals pump it up. 

I could go on and on and on about the lyrics, because they’re fucking amazing. But I do have to comment on the music. Even though I am not super knowledgeable about all the terminology of why this song just *hits*, I know it does. One thing I do notice is how Freddie’s voice goes into falsetto then back during one single line. Caviar and cigarettes– (goes into falsetto) well versed in etiquette (then he glides back to a deeper note) extraordinarily nice. Okay that was my novice interpretation of that, but I happen to know it’s beautifully and seamlessly done.

It’s a perfect song and it will always be in my top five. Yes, I said it! My one critique is that I won’t ever be able to listen to Killer Queen for the first time ever again.
