So...that happened. 

“Shelby!” you yell, but she was off running.

You start to run after her, but she was fast and you were very out of shape. 

“Shelby!” you yell out again, “Please! Let’s talk!” 

She kept running until you were both at camp. Once you got there you took a hold of her elbow and pulled her to the side.

“We need to talk.” you whisper and her eyes were filled to the brim with worry and guilt.

After her just staring blankly at you, she finally nods and the two of you find a secluded place to talk.

A month ago you had no idea who Shelby Goodkind was. You were at some artsy hipster school with Leah and Fatin in California. The two of you were 1,407 miles away as she resided in Texas.

And sure saying this retreat hasn’t gone as planned would be an understatement. But meeting Shelby kept you sane. With her unbelievable amount of positivity and ice breakers. 

With your anxiety, you needed someone like that here.

You didn’t need Rachel’s constant screaming and push for you to do better. Because yeah you were slower than everyone else, but you tried your best. You didn’t need Toni’s negativity. Because that’s all you felt swimming in your head. 

You needed Shelby there in more ways than other’s. 

Earlier that day you were out on an expedition by yourself. Food was getting scarce and Rachel demanded that you did it. 

Mumbling something like, “You think someone with that much tats would be tougher in this situation.” 

“Rachel can you get off her ass?!” Leah shouts.

Rachel was about to retort with her on snarky comment, but you cut it off all together, “It’s okay Leah. I got it.” 

She gives you a look, but you just nod and throw on your best convincing smile. Leah nods and takes a deep breath.

“You better find food for us.” Rachel says sternly and you swallow before giving her a nod.

Let’s just say the expedition didn’t quite go as planned. You took all the berries from the bushes that were nearby.

And the further you went into the jungle. The more uneasy and anxious you became. Not because you were scared that you were getting away from the camp, but because you would disappoint them again. 

You needed to come back with something...anything! 

But as looked up to the sky the sun was almost setting and you still had nothing. The thought of letting the team down killed you. You wanted to help, but you couldn’t. 

You could feel everything around you start to spin. All of the trees seemed to be closing in on you, surrounding you. Your whole chest hurt like your ribs were shattered. 

You could hear a voice in the distance, but you couldn’t grasp where it was coming from.

“Y/N! Are you alright?” the blonde Texan came to view, her voice laced with concern.

She stares at you with panic in her eyes, not really knowing what to do. You knew she was there, but you were in your own world trying to breathe normally again, but no matter how hard you tried to calm down, you just couldn’t.

“Y/N, you need to relax.” she advised and you shook you head. 

Tears were falling from your eyes and rolled down your cheeks. Both of your hands were shaking ever so slightly. You tried to close your eyes, but the void of darkness you saw just made it worse. 

“What’s wrong?” she asked and you could hear the slight panic in her voice and a part of you felt bad because it was your fault that she was in panic. 

You tried to give her an answer, but all that came out of your mouth was short heavy breathing, “Okay, mhm...” 

Before you could process anything that was happening around you, you felt two small, soft hands grabbing both sides of your face and pulling your forward. All of a sudden you can feel Shelby’s mouth on top of your own. 

You slowly closed your eyes and kissed back. You can feel your beating so fast in your chest. The kiss made you forget about what you were worrying so much about. The two of you slowly pulled away from each other to catch your breath.

You looked in her eyes then they drifted back down to her lips, “I uh I need to go!” she yells, standing up abruptly. 

That’s how you got here, talking to Shelby.

“Why did you run off?” you ask her softly.

She shrugs, not wanting to say another word. Shelby didn’t know how to feel it was all so confusing and scary for her.

It felt right kissing you. She’s been wanting to do it for days now. But she couldn’t help the lonely fear induced pit in your stomach.

“Come on Shelby, talk to me.” you whisper, hesitantly grabbing a hold of her hand. She took in a breath at the feeling, “Is this okay?” 

She nods slowly, “I uh I can’t feel this way about you Y/N.” 

“Feel what way?” you ask. 

“The need to kiss you every time I see you! I shouldn’t...I can’t feel this way.” she states, but you could tell a battle is going on in that pretty little head of hers. 

You thought she was done talking, but she cuts you off continuing her rant even more, “You’re just so sweet and before I got to know you I was scared of you.”

“Scared of me?” you ask and the both of you chuckle.

She nodded, “Yeah! I mean look at you and all of your tattoos.” which caused you to chuckle again, “But the more I got to know you, the more I realized just how sweet you actually are. When Leah is on one of her breakdowns you’re there holding her tight to make sure she’s okay. You gave Toni the last anti-nausea pill because she needed it more than you. When everyone was angry with me, you were there to keep me company.”

“I don’t do anything.” you whisper.

“Y/N, that means everything. So much more than helping find us water or food. You keep us sane. That’s why I have to keep shaking off this feeling of kissing you because you’re you. And I can’t feel this way.” she whispers softly.

“You don’t have to be afraid here Shelb. We’re supposed to be dead. All of us should be dead right now. If there’s anything that this island taught me it’s that you can’t overthink anymore. You need to go for it. Be spontaneous.” you explain, “But when you’re ready, I’ll be waiting.” 

You lean in, placing a soft kiss on her forehead, before walking away to the rest of the girls.

as an english major, what are some of ur favourite book series or books in general? doesn’t have to be super fancy books :0

growing up i read a LOT of stephen king. like my pipeline was literally goosebumps > fear street > king (plus like christopher pike as well). there are books of his i enjoy more than others, and some that were downright iffy, but ... the shining and dreamcatcher are two of my favourites, for sure. misery is also v good

(pike is also worth checking out for YA horror stories)

i have reread the hp series more times than i can count (disclaimer: I Know. i am aware.)

in hs i was really into the sword of truth series by terry goodkind. knowing More about where he borrowed a lot of his tenets now (see: ayn rand) had coloured some of the books' messages, but overall the characters are still very dear to my heart. my first tattoo was a symbol from the series and i love it to this day

i haven't read them in a while but both norwegian wood and kafka on the shore by haruki murakami were v enjoyable to me when i first encountered them

my fave book that i read in uni was prob cloud atlas by david mitchell. haven't gone back to reread it but i love books that play with structure & language

similarly, house of leaves by mark z danielewski is a great Experience, especially if you're a fan of frame narratives, metatext, and innovative typesetting. i could wax on forever about the signiconic

i never vibed with a lot of classic literature, so i'd be hard pressed to pick any favourites, but some books that have stood out to me have been 2001: a space odyssey by arthur c clarke (classic enough) and lolita by vladimir nabokov (i have a LOT of thoughts about how people react to this book & how the media treats it)

my favourite short stories are the ones who walk away from omelas by ursula k leguin and the last question by isaac asimov

haven't read a lot of manga but trigun maximum is easily the best

and as a final mention ... salted circus cashews, swear to god by raphael bob-waksberg, in his book someone who will love you in all your damaged glory, bc it was two pages long and made me cry

1. Azhrarn, Night’s Master, Wickedness, Lord of Darkness {Tanith Lee - “Tales from the Flat Earth”} No one will EVER match up to Azhrarn in my estimation. He is the single greatest character I’ve ever encountered and I will continue to reread the Flat Earth series until I’m dead and buried. 

2. Emperor Jagang “the Just”  {Terry Goodkind - “The Sword of Truth” series} Look, I don’t actually LIKE Terry Goodkind. And gods know the man should’ve just stopped writing at some point. Like... after “Faith of the Fallen.” But Jagang was a PHENOMENAL villain and I greatly appreciate him. 

3. Dr. Henry “Indiana” Jones {The Indiana Jones film series} My first love <3 I’m all about a man who is smart, but not that bright, and solves problems with a combination of intelligence, knowledge and dumb fuckin’ luck I stg Indy...

4. Batman {Origins: Detective Comics #27 in 1939} Yes, I’m a huge sucker for characters that use their brains to solve problems. Batman being the ultimate detective is just one more strike in his favor. And I have a serious thing for masks/cowls/hoods. I blame him for starting this.

5. Ellen Ripley {The Aliens film series} I could never figure out if I wanted to BE her or MARRY her. Although I also love Sarah Connor (because give me all the women who say “fuck you Imma power thru this”) Ripley comes first. She wasn’t a fighter, wasn’t a soldier, wasn’t a warrior but godDAMN did she come through. 

6. Haurchefant Greystone {FFXIV “Heavensward”} I don’t care how predictable this is, he is my baby. And the reason is that when he first showed up in the game? I barely took note of him. And as I played through Heavensward, it got to the point I admonished him during scenes when he ran ahead of Ferazhin. A character I barely noticed slowly turned into one I literally screamed and wept over. My heart forever aches for Haurchefant. 

7. Angaharad “Hari / Harimad-sol” {Robin McKinley - “The Blue Sword”} Hari has the distinction of being the first fantasy heroine I ever saw myself in. And having read a LOT of books, she remains the one I feel most sympathy for. I GET you, Hari. 

8. The Tattooed Priestess {Fatal Frame III: The Tormented} The character herself is sad, but the concept behind her absolutely floors me. Granted, all the Fatal Frame lore just blows my mind and delights me on so many levels, but the Tattooed Priestess is especially a glorious combination of absolute pathos and grand horror. 

9. Sascha Vykos {Vampire: the Masquerade - signature character for clan Tzimisce} I love it. The Tzimisce clan as a whole is fascinating, but you get to spend time with Sascha in the clan novels. It--or she, as she’s presenting female in the novels--is amoral, cold, calculating and sadistic. And really, really well written. 

10. Wednesday {”American Gods” - Neil Gaiman} I’m referring to the book, not the show. (Although Ian McShane does a fantastic job.} And I love how true to myth the entire novel is while giving it a unique feel. I love how certain aspects of the gods are enhanced and others are tied in with the homelands they were taken from. And I will always love me a trickster.

The Otherland Series by Tad William's (fucking AMAZING sci-fi with non-white MCs)

Memory, Sorrow and Thorn Trilogy by Tad Williams (Piers Anthony called it the War and Peace of fantasy and he's not wrong. So tragically beautiful.)

The Count of Monte Cristo by Victor Hugo (SERIOUSLY ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS EVER WRITTEN)

The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery (this book makes me so emotional I can only bring myself to read it once a decade)

Faith of the Fallen by Terry Goodkind (I have yet to see another fantasy novel examine and portray the misery and nobility of humanity anywhere near as well as this. I could talk for hours about it)

Used to do this all the time. Still do occasionally. The best is when you're on a hill with nothing in your peripheral vision, and you can concentrate so much that you begin to feel the movement of the earth.

60. Have you ever fallen asleep at work/school? Yup. Especially when I've worked 60-80 hour weeks. I've even fallen asleep while talking to someone on the phone at work.

62. Have you ever felt an earthquake? Nope.

72. Have you ever been to the opposite side of the country? Several times. Bounced from east to west coast like 5x so far.

77. Have you ever laughed until something you were drinking came out your nose? Not since I was a kid.

I dont like horror/scary movies because I recognize the psychological manipulation of the fight or flight response that triggers adrenal dump followed by dopamine and serotonin, specifically designed and timed to put you into a cycle that makes you want more. I don't like being deliberately manipulated at a physiological level.

(AU) Stiles got bit by a wendigo, the scar etched into his skin as a reminder of the first death on his hands. He thought the nogitsune took his innocence, but this was something else. The bite changed him inside, made him lose the fear of that once had him refuse Peter’s offer to become like him.

Scott’s bite didn’t hurt the way Stiles thought it would. And it was nice being part of the fight, no longer shoved to the sidelines for his own protection. But when it came time to save Lydia from Eichen, the mountain ash was in the way. He couldn’t get past it like he would have as a human. That didn’t mean he didn’t try. No one expected for his eyes to start glowing red.

Stiles became an alpha through a force of will comparable to Scott, and he didn’t need a tattoo to brand himself and his future pack. He already had it on his skin.

Lipstick or Chapstick: I have both, but I really only use chapstick. Burt's Bees, Eos. I guess I have a couple of Lipstick Queen colors I wear, but they're tints. Not really lipstick.

Last Movie: Hm. Well, I was on a horror kick for a while. I think it was...The Awakening? Get Out? One of the two, I think.

I'm very self-defeating. It would be nice not to be.

2. What is your DA rare pair?

Cassandra and Solas. They have some pretty interesting party dialogue.

Lawd. Nobody's got time for my answer to this question. The first that comes to mind is Piece by Piece by Katie Melua.

4. The best movie ever?

Another depends on my mood question. Bram Stoker's Dracula. Mm. Gary Oldman.

5. Food you will never eat?

Bugs. I don't do bugs. I'd die if I had to do that to survive.

6. Your celebrity crush?

Ryan Reynolds, always and forever.

7. Your favorite DA location and why?

Emerald Graves because it's one of the most beautiful game environments I've ever seen.

8. You’re a night or a morning person?

Night. Mornings bad.

9. You have any tattoos?

Four. Red devil rubber ducky on my ankle, my Grandmother's name and a triquetra on my left shoulder, peacock feather on my right wrist, and a rose in a wedge of vines on my back with a line of poetry on a banner woven in. The feather is covering up an old one that lost its meaning, so...fourish.

10. How many languages you speak?

Just English. I've taken Spanish and French, but what I remember would barely fill a thimble.

11. Where would you most like to visit?

Ireland.

12. What’s the best book you’ve read?

I'm not sure I can answer this. I've read soooo many. My fav fantasy novel will always be Wizard's First Rule by Terry Goodkind. Favorite play is No Exit by Sartre. Favorite non-fiction is Stiff by Mary Roach.

13. Who is your favourite BioWare character?

Solas, I think. He's so broody and broken and heartbreaking and I'm into all of that. Wreck me plz.

14. Who’s your least preferred BioWare character?

This is hard. Before DA:I, I'd have said Anora, hands down. If that bitch were on fire, I'd roast marshmallows. But now, Samson is right up there with her. He gives me the squidgies.

Probably a cartoon cat on a tricycle wearing sunglasses and black nail polish while flipping everyone off. Is that too specific?

Chocolate cake WITH vanilla ice cream.

Cats, though I love anything furry and sweet that won't talk back and will let me pet it.

19. What was your favourite DA romance?

Fenris (over Solas) purely because one broody elf gives you more satisfaction than the other.

20. Do you prefer sunshine or are you a winter person?

I'm an overcast, rainy, winter kind of girl.
