#I just think Gale is neat

After that post, I got thinking about Bloodweave again. Specifically the way Gale loves and how he would be just as a good fit for Astarion as Karlach, Wyll, or Halsin.
Gale's devotion to his loved one is absolute. He's a kind-hearted soul— the very reason he could summon Tara. He's willing to sacrifice himself for the greater good. In an origin run, he proclaims, "...one wizard for the whole of Faerun seems like a fair trade to me."
Gale may not be your typical storybook prince or hero, but his hopeless romanticism shines through a belief in altruism and selflessness. This is a man who says things like "you put the stars to shame" and "with you, I forget my goddess." His devotion transcends physicality, even embracing a romanced, illithid-infected Tav. No mere 'gosh' escapes him when facing the reality of Durge's Bhaalspawn heritage.
Gale approves of helping people, and two of his mini-romance scenes are after you have saved someone. He can only be manipulated into joining you in an evil playthrough because of the orb in his chest. He is a good man, a good man who cried because he accidentally burnt a neighbours rose bush when he was 8.
His love is rooted in personality, not appearances. Gale values commitment, believing sex is an act of profound connection between body and soul. He's the antithesis of the shallow encounters Astarion's was forced to endure. Gale's steadfastness would have made him an unlikely victim for Astarion's seductions. A fact that annoys me in a Gale origin run, as you should be able to say that you can't have sex like you can in a Karlach origin run.
Astarion would find Gale's authenticity refreshing. He doesn't need to put on an act in front of Gale. In fact, Gale prefers the truth. Gale, ever kind, would even offer to help kill Cazador without asking for anything in return. That's simply who he is.
Astarion needs someone selfless, patient, and understanding – qualities Gale possesses in abundance. A romanced Astarion, in turn, deeply cares for his partner once his masked as slipped, and he realises that he is in love (albeit I haven't played his romance out yet).
He repeatedly encourages Gale to think independently ("Where is Gale's will?") and challenges his self-sacrificial tendencies.
Their bond grows over books and shared interests. Contrary to belief, a romanced Astarion would not want Gale to ascend to Godhood. A romanced Astarion would selfishly want Gale to himself.
I'm convinced Gale offers a fulfilling romance for any companion.
Gale and Wyll are not too different. If one is a good fit for Astarion, then so is the other. And if Astarion is a good fit for one, then he is a good fit for the other.
Saying that Gale is too easily corruptible or morally ambiguous to be "good enough" for Astarion is really doing an injustice to Gale. Gale is kind-hearted and morally sound enough to encourage Astarion to be a better person. Gale is neutral good, just like Wyll is. Gale's actions always have good intentions behind them.
Also, I'm not saying people have to like Bloodweave, but I just understand that there are often deeper reasons people like the ship.

Honestly there was a real missed opportunity for a scene involving Gale reading the player some of his poetry

Hi have a headcanon
I don't remember the exact line, but Gale says something along the lines of "man, if we weren't in this shit, I would court you properly" so what if
Once this is all over right
Him and Tav play pretend where they agree to meet up in a tavern somewhere separately from each other and pretend they don't know each other
And Gale, confidence boosted, just gets to... chat Tav up?
Bonus points if they do this when they're already married
Extra bonus points if Tav makes it more difficult by casting Disguise Self to see if Gale can still tell its them (he does, but sometimes it feels like cheating because he knows the feel of their magic so intimately that becomes more of a game to pretend he can't find them)

People don't like Gale because he talks too much but I love it. Like yes tell me about lanceboard and the weave and karsus' folly and yeah maybe I have listened to the exact same dialogue four times already and quicksaved before this so I could do it again. What of it.

Having the Gale Thoughts (tm) again - mostly about how much it seems like he is built around the idea of creation. Both metaphysically through magic ("I know its unreal but I made it for you") and literally when he does shit like cooks for the party and writes poetry. I know he even refers to his hands several times, which makes sense - they are his tools for how he creates in the world. Like, dont get me wrong I believe the guy does hella acts of service as a love language but man it seems like he really does like grand gestures in the form of making something for people as a sort of gift. Ngl thats why I just love him so much with a bard!Tav because they are by default an artist and there is that connection on the idea of *making* things. Like the guy talks so much about literature, poetry, and art that it feels like more than just an academic interest in it. Obviously though all PCs can connect to that in some way or another, I just have my biases because of how I play. Gale strikes me as someone who really is interested in people who add to the world and he just really really wants to be one of them. Partially because, yeah he *was* one of them he was a fucking arch-wizard. Part of me also thinks its because once he was recognized as a child prodigy he probably was expected to be that. Part of me also thinks its because his mother clearly loves to cook, and it was an act of creating that was passed down to him.

The more I play, the more I think people that who super dislike Astarion have never experienced a trauma before.
Like ofc you're allowed to dislike a character for any reason, but it also makes so much sense why he is how he is when you unlock his positive approval rating covos. He's a snarky stab happy fuckboy yes, but his quest for power isn't unjustified. Astarion is scared, he's terrified he'll be brought back to Cazador and tortured 5 ways to sunday, if not outright killed. The tadpole is what's keeping him safe, and he isn't going to give it up without a fight. So he thinks the only way to ensure his safety and freedom is to go full scorched earth, take as much power by any means possible no matter who it hurts. He's a spurr of the moment decion maker, of course he's not going to think it through. When your ticket to freedom after 200 years of torture is right there, you don't stop to think about the cost of it, to yourself or others.
Astarion doesn't want power so he can rule over the sword coast, he wants power to make sure no one ever can ever hurt him again. You hear something simular in folks who have experienced trauma (plz understand that I'm generalizing here, trauma is processed differently by different people no one brain is the same). Anger, grief, fear, confusion, terror all are things that can go through your mind after a traumatic event occurs. Your brain is trying to find a way to make things hurt less, so if there's a chance for revenge, or the ability to take back power, you bet your ass its gonna sound delicious to your emotionally flooded brain. This is what I think is at the core of Astarions story. That this confident, cunning, flirtatious vampire is mostly an act, it's what he's practiced and what's protected him thus far. He likely learned that showing any sort of vulnerability is a weakness that will be used against him. His grab for power is selfish yes, but not in the way it seems at the surface. But absolutely power will corrupt absolutely, which is why I say his desire is justified, but not exactly supported depending on what type of run you're doing.
Idk man I just immediately looked at this man and went "aweeh.... it's traumatized". That boi ain't got any coping skills whatsoever and I'm a sucker for characters who's confidence is just a ploy to keep you from seeing just how fucked up they actually are. Anyways each character in this damn game is written so freaking well I could write a billion essays about it everyone say thank you Larian

gale is ambition, so he has both crippling self doubt and debilitating pride in his work.
gale is ambition, so if a character tries to undermine him by one-upping him, he'll think he's not nothing left. more else can the orb destroy that it hasn't already?
gale is ambition, so if a character tries to undermine him by one-upping him, he'll vehemently deny that. he's the wizard of waterdeep. he was mystra's chosen. he was her lover. who could be any better than that?
gale is ambition. it's his greatest flaw and his greatest asset.

With the recent trend toward dark haired baddie and blond haired waif pairings, Astarion and Gale are somewhat opposite. Gale has dark coloring and is sweet as pie. Astairion is pale with white hair and mischievous.
I don't know. It's probably the tadpole brain I have now.

Wh… what do you mean, serial killer Gale au? 👀‼️‼️‼️ (I am highly inchreeged)
There's nothing concrete written for it yet, mostly vibes I rotate in my brain every once in a while, but there's something about the concept of a sweet gentleman scholar with a dark secret that is very compelling to me. What if the thing that feeds the orb's hunger is life itself? What if he discovers it on accident one day defending himself from someone who tried to break into his tower? So he starts out justifying doing it again by saying he's going to target rapists, and murderers (haha the irony, Gale!!) and the rest of the worst of society. It stabilizes the orb enough that he finally re-enters his old life and starts teaching again, explaining his absence as some chronic illness that's finally abated. At some point he has to come to terms with the fact that he likes killing a little too much, and he's in way too deep now to quit anyway, and besides, if he doesn't keep killing the people who deserve it, he's going to detonate and a lot of people who dont deserve it might die and isnt that *worse*???? He says this to himself in the mirror to help himself sleep at night of course.
And it certainly doesn't help when he catches the eye of one of his students, a gorgeous young academic who is captivated by his wit and intellect and makes him feel alive again. And he shouldn't fall in love, not when he has this horrible secret that could spell his own ruin, but he just can't help himself.
Oops, they found out. Now he has to kill them too. Unless...
What if they're batshit crazy (affectionate) enough to be like "oh that's neat can I help? Maybe observe and take notes?" and hmmm this person knows a little too much about how to lure people away from a crowd, and you know, isn't it strange how they know exactly the right quantity and combination of chemicals to dissolve a body without a trace so quickly?
There's certainly no way this could get very messy for the both of them :V :V :V
Anyway sometimes that concept keeps me awake at night. 😁
