M9 Reunion thoughts:
- I was woefully unprepared for Beau finding Imogen attractive. I am deceased.
- Fearne and Laudna would love the Blooming Grove so much
- Beauyasha in an open relationship discussion feeds fanwriters for moons to come
- I miss Veth but LUC
- I need a convergence of all three parties bc: Beau, Yasha, Imogen, Fearne. Jester and Fearne. Fearne and Caduceus. Fjord and Chet meeting. Scanlan and Jester meeting. Vex being endlessly amused. Percy being endlessly annoyed. Keyleth and Caduceus and Pike meeting. Yasha and Grog arm wrestling.
- Just imagine how worried all the regular Sending receivers are rn at the sudden peace and quiet in their minds :(
- Aggy was hilarious. Does anyone know if he lasted long than Spurt??
- Beauyasha moments for the win!
- YASHA DOING 160 POINTS OF DAMAGE IN ONE HIT?!!!!
- okay, but Caleb having to relive that trauma made me so upset. If someone did that with my mother I’d burn the world around them to ash
- is Essek okay?
- Cad’s Divine Intervention was AMAZING
- Luc was amazing! The Enlarge on the T-Rex was epic. Great dnd choice.
- Laura’s dice mostly love Imogen but hate Jester when it matters 😭 but Marisha’s dice hate Laudna and love Beau lol
- FORJESTER PROPOSAL IM SCREAMING CRYING EATING DRYWALL
Final thoughts: now that the M9 knows of the threat ruidis poses, I hope we get more cameos in campaign 3 with them. Imogen deserves the chance to meet Beauyasha. And so does Fearne. I hope we get a wedding oneshot sooon! I’d also love to see more of Luc. I was hoping we’d see the Wildmother send both Fjord and Caduceus the same warning the Changebringer and Dawnfather sent FCG and Deanna, hopefully that’s expanded soon.

the thing about delilah and laudna's relationship is... okay.
i won't stand here and say "everyone would hate delilah if she was a man! you only like her because you can call her a girlboss!" because there are female characters in this series accused of being abusive for far less or literally nothing. if it were sylas or asmodeus or any other male villain that was her warlock patron, i'd argue that nearly nothing at all would change.
to cut to the chase and to cut myself off from this becoming a rant towards people giving villains far more sympathy than heroes: i think people would take her treatment of laudna more seriously if laudna was a man. like, nobody's lining up to call liam o'brien a misandrist for hating trent ikithon.
people do not take female abuse victims seriously, for starters. delilah has been belittling, manipulating, and punishing laudna for decades but everyone acts like she's completely comfortable with her for some reason. it's usually attributed to a scene in episode TWO where she was sassy and rude towards her patron before we knew who she was.
really? that's all the proof you have? are you gonna start complaining that veth doesn't have a british accent too?
i was kind of horrified when everyone defended laudna killing bor'dor by insisting that it was a "feminist move" to let her self harm because "it was her choice." you know. the "choice" that everyone involved regretted letting happen and pretty much agreed that they'd never let it come to that again if they could help it? and it wasn't even a choice on her behalf! because laudna cannot consent when delilah takes control. she was dead when delilah made her into her soul jar. why does everyone forget that?
and besides, laudna isn't even the first woman she's done this to. people seem to completely sidestep that she did the exact same things to cassandra de rolo for decades as well. that's why i can't really get behind any posts that sympathize with her.
"um she's a bad guy and bad guys are supposed to do bad things you dumb goo goo gaa gaa baby nun puritan 🤪🤪🤪"
alright, then. if delilah's a bad guy, then let her be a bad guy and quit making excuses for her. if you're willing to read into the heroic characters with every single bad faith interpretation (literally every single member of bell's hells except for chetney and dorian has been accused of being abusive to laudna over delilah lmao) you can think of, then how come you're suddenly pitying the character that chose to fuck over multiple women over to get ahead and tried to cause the apocalypse multiple times?
delilah made her choice. laudna never could.

Shameless Gravity - Chapter 7: Apple Tarts, Blood, Onyx and Bandages
Gasp! A rare double chapter post day! Hope you enjoy!
How had he been so stupid!? Caleb wondered watching Essek swoop away with a mix of hurt and anger colouring his delicate features. Caleb had absolutely blown things at the last moment. And after such a fine evening too! Now Essek was somewhere probably rebuilding a thousand layers of defenses and for what? One moment of foolish self indulgence?
Caleb had known Essek would not be the kind for overt overtures of romance. He had opted all along the way to play more into the concept of intriguing and charming with the other wizard, but when he had looked into those violet eyes and seen such a familiar disappointment at having to leave something part way, such a uniquely mimicked sadness in the slope of his shoulders as he had placed his mantle on once more to return to playing a part that his gentle heart had never been meant for… well Caleb had briefly turned into a fool. Essek was clearly out there reading the worst of intentions into it and Caleb had been merely reaching out to Essek the same way he would have to Astrid or Eadwulf. He hadn’t thought ahead to how it would be perceived in their circumstance, he had simply fallen into the usual romantic habits of people he trusted. A wink and a grin was a common enough staple in his interactions with his closest allies that it had come out naturally. Flirtatious? Certainly but that was all a part of the usual fun!
And why? Why did Caleb trust Essek enough to slip up like that? To fall into routine with this elf who was anything but typical? Perhaps Wulf had been right. Caleb needed to clear Essek from his mind. He was once again playing too close to fire and you would think he knew better than to get burned at this point.
“Bren,” Trent’s stern voice carved it’s way through Caleb’s scattered thoughts. “You are running late on debriefing with me. I should not have to remind you to visit me after each session.”
“Yes Master Ikithon.” Was all Bren said in reply, shedding and leaving Caleb here in the study where he belonged. Caleb was an affectionate fool, too excited by power and intellect. Too easily swayed by a handsome face and a shy smile. Bren was the one who did the surviving.
He made his way swiftly to Ikithon’s tower, heart race increasing just at the sight of it. This was the home of so many pains. Astrid and Eadwulf were the ones who understood. Essek… well he doubted Essek had ever felt the sharp piercing of a blade at all. Bren wouldn’t spend any more time with his mind stuck where it ought not to be. He was using Essek, that was all. He would harden his heart and focus. Failure had to great a cost.
“Welcome Bren. So tell me, did you have any more success this time in learning more about the Shadowhand’s research?”
An hour later, truth well obfuscated,  Bren returned home to find Astrid humming to herself by the stove top. On any other evening it would have been perfection itself to see Astrid so relaxed (a rare event) and making his favourite dish, but tonight his mind was sick with the thinly veiled threat of Trent’s impatience for him to provide more. He had given him surface information that Trent had already surmised in his own studies and was told in no uncertain terms that it was insufficient. He would have to start sharing Essek's actual knowledge soon he knew and he hated the thought of giving Trent any more of an advantage than he already had and also greatly disliked the idea of betraying Essek's trust though he knew it was quite literally his job to do so.
Hoping to shake it off before he interrupted this warm moment, Bren paused at the door and observed quietly.

Talks Machina Highlights - Critical Role C2E131 (March 30, 2021)
Tonight’s guests are Liam O’Brien and Sam Riegel!
Brian points out that a lot of Caleb’s greatest fears have come to pass. Liam: “It’s funny, because he’d kind of believed for a while that those things weren’t going to happen. After a while, he got complacent.” He notes that it was extra wild because everything with Trent popped up again in the midst of that complacency. And how did it feel to be defiant toward Trent? “I think Trent successfully made Caleb question if Caleb really was in control“ at the dinner party. “I feel like anything that I do is part of his plans for me, or is that just gaslighting? I’m legitimately scared of that dude.” Sam: “Of Matt?” Liam: “Sure.” He highlights the disconnect between knowing that the M9 is mechanically powerful and could possibly defeat Trent in a dice-and-stats battle, versus fearing him in a story sense and being convinced he can do almost anything.
Sam, on Luc’s death: “That was brutal, man. Matt Mercer is a-- he hates children! Clearly. He actively sought to kill a child in the campaign in as brutal a way as possible. He hates children and wants them dead. Canon. No, but to RP, that was horrible.” He highlights that so much of Veth’s arc has been about trying to get back to her family. “We had to choose something and we thought we were making the right choice. It was all Veth’s fault, and it was pretty rotten. My heart was beating pretty fast, and I certainly didn’t want to have my son die live on the stream. I don’t know what Veth would have done. That’s the end, that’s over. It’s almost worse than when your own character would die. This is something that would also kill Veth.” After the episode was over: “just shaken. I also didn’t know what to do next! That felt like a turning-point moment for my character, weirdly so close to what we assume to be the end arc of this campaign. I texted Matt later that night and was like, that’s it, Veth’s out, I’m tapping out.”
There’s an interlude in which Sam discovers a new dream to record an episode of this show from his Peloton. Dani informs him that she will not be inviting him back.
On Astrid, Liam: “I literally don’t know what she’s doing. I know that she’s dangerous, she always was ambitious, and there’s not been a moment where Caleb let his guard down with her. He’s not trying to reestablish what they had. He cares for the both of them, for Astrid and Eodwulf. He thinks about it a lot, still. He can’t tell how much she buys into everything that she experienced and is now living as a full-grown adult. He suspects that she’s bought in and is not going to change things, because she believes in the system, as much as he’d like to peel her away. He does believe that they want what’s best for the Empire, and stopping whatever wants to come vomiting out of a hole in the frozen north is good for everyone. And they’re powerful. They’re not trustworthy, obviously. But there’s enough at stake to make it worth it. He could imagine a situation where they fight each other to the death.” He was convinced Astrid was going to stop them when they left the tower and was really shocked when she held back. Sam: “Not me! I’ve trusted Astrid since day one. She’s the greatest! I sent a letter to her, she’s very nice, I think you guys would be a nice couple. I believe every word she says.”
On having to decide on Veth deciding to go off and save the world after Luc’s death. “Like I said, I was ready to be done. And then I decided somewhere in there that that’s not very D&D. So I thought I’d leave it up to somebody else, so I asked Caduceus to decide for me, essentially. She knows she’s putting her other family in danger if she doesn’t go. It’s an impossible choice, you know?” Liam: “I love watching you grapple with it, because you’re a lovely father and love your kids.”
On the Sanatorium, Sam: “That was brutal, man. Matt lulls you into a sense of complacency. We’d forgotten that Caleb was a stone-cold killer! It had been a while since he went on a murder spree. Still got it!” Liam: “I never meant for this character to be perfect sunshine.” Brian: “You don’t say.” Liam: “He’s very not-perfect, and I think in his brain, he was going in with the impression that they needed to get in and get out as soon as possible. The place is crawling with people with magic ability, and I didn’t have faith that we wouldn’t be sussed out or something wasn’t going to blow an illusion.” Everything was about getting out of there as fast as possible.
Did the conversation with Yeza help with Veth’s decision? “First of all, every conversation with Yeza is a beautiful one. Every time she talks to Yeza, it makes her feel good. In some ways, she’s gotten to the point now where she knows Yeza’s going to be supportive, she knows he’s going to allow her to do what she wants, but maybe that’s too much. Maybe she needs to not listen to him, basically, and be like, no, you need to be selfish now, dude, you need to say ‘come home, I’m sick of you leaving’. At a certain point, being supportive can turn into being enabling.”
Cosplay of the Week: Jester in the snow! (liljerbear47, photography by kairiceleste on Instagram)
On Trent’s motivations for chasing Caleb: “I really don’t know. The simplest explanation is to just hammer down the nail that’s sticking up. It has crossed his mind that all high-level wizards are in danger of their own ambition and egos, so it’s occurred to him that Trent might have the same kind of ideas that Halas had in the past, and maybe Caleb was always meant to be another body to jump into. Maybe in some sick, disgusting, twisted way, he wants him to be his successor. I am thinking of the next campaign, without getting too deep in, trying to do something that is much more ride-along. Caleb is very, very specific, and I thought long and hard about all the different pieces on the chessboard for him. For campaign three, I’m looking forward to seeing what happens.”
Dani: “Do I need to be keeping lore on your fucking ads?”
On the cursed dagger: “It was a tricky one, because in campaign one, one of the characters was under the influence of a cursed weapon, but it interacted with him and he knew what it was and what it did. And it affected his gameplay as a character. For me, Veth didn’t know what it was, ever. I as a player knew what it was doing, but Veth didn’t know at all. So it was kind of like my dirty, dark secret for many months. I knew this thing was coming perilously close to killing me, but my character didn’t know enough to bring it up to her friends. Nobody ever asked! So I was like, well, I guess this thing’s just going to kill me one day, and it’s kind of going to be a surprise.” Liam: “Sam, you love danger and self-destruction so much, you might as well be Mollymauk.”
On the fight in Yasha’s sequence, Sam: “You gotta put a character in your storm giant creature. It was so fun! It was so great of Matt to involve us in this encounter. It would’ve been fun just to watch, because Matt would have made it amazing and Ashley was sweating bullets, which is always fun to watch.” Sam notes he felt guilty, but Liam was going for the kill. Liam: “Matt’s gotta be careful about giving me that kind of story beat. I do not fucking care, I just fucking flip, I’m like, well, I’m going to destroy you, and I have no qualms about it. It’s too much fun!”
The Beau/Yasha tower date was in part inspired by not being able to give gifts as easily this last year. “This thing that we do together is a gift, but I love finding these moments, like the book for Jester and the tower for Yasha and for Beau. I really just wanted to give both of them a little magic for a night. I wanted them to leave this-- we’re trying to be as entertaining as possible, but shit is having an effect on all of us too, and I wanted them to have an escape, a great place to escape to.”
Fan Art of the Week: an amazing group shot, plus Marion, Yeza, and Luc! (vocaz on Twitter)
On choosing Essek over Trent, Liam: “It would have been so interesting and awful and great! Essek and Astrid and Eodwulf are everything that Bren used to be attracted to that are terrible for him. Essek, hopefully he can with time find a way out of the hole that he dug himself into, but it was only two months ago where he was found out and his ambitions came crashing down around him. Long-term, I have high hopes for him, but I think it’s going to be hard.” In contrast, Astrid and Eodwulf are still “deep in the shit. It would have been really hard to navigate, but fun to play at the table. We made the right choice with what we went with. Essek’s just getting started, and Caleb doesn’t trust him entirely, because he was burned so hard not too long ago. He’s still more trustworthy than the other three. So it’s the better choice. While Caleb has all these ties on the other side, they’re really fucking dangerous. So if you have to choose, you choose Essek. But fuck that die.” Sam: “Veth, much like Sam Riegel, makes instant decisions about whether to trust someone or not and sticks to it forever. Astrid, 100% trust. Eodwulf, 100% distrust. Essek, completely distrust. I still don’t think he’s a good guy. Ikithon? Trust. 100%. Because you know where he’s coming forward, you know what he wants. I still want him dead, but I trust him.”
On Veth’s post-adventuring plans: “Veth is probably still too in it right now to think about what comes next. I, Sam Riegel, have a good idea of what I want Veth to do post-campaign.” Brian: “Maybe you shouldn’t tell us. Save it for the show!” Sam: “All she knows is she can’t do this anymore. It’s very unhealthy to be battle-wounded every other day. It’s fun for a while, but college has to end at some point, and she’s gotta go home.”
On Frumpkin changing appearance and returning to the Feywild: “I don’t know what I’m going to do, but the way it feels now for Caleb is that he feels too enmeshed in everything that has happened, and too much good has happened, and too much needs to happened, that that really narcissistic, selfish goal has the risk of harming everything else, which is more important. And that’s how he looks at it now. So he’s gearing towards letting everything from the beginning of the campaign, and where he started, go, and trying to figure out what use he’s going to be now and what he’s going to do if they’re not all dead. If Matt throws that shit down, I don’t know what I will do, I think about it a lot. But turning Frumpkin white and saying you’re free either way is him preparing to let go of everything he’s been holding on to for a really long time. He’s addicted to that idea that he can fix himself, and we’ll see if that hard choice gets presented, what he might do. But where he stands now, he doesn’t think that’s going to be reality, and he sees a way that he can be of use that he never really anticipated before, so he’s slowly shifting gears towards living with the pain he was trying to remove.”
On the last request scene and confidence heading into Aeor, Sam: “I feel like that’s a good request. I think all of us realized that if we die, that probably bodes badly for the world. I feel like all of us are at a point now as characters and as friends, that the first order of business would be to take care of everybody else’s shit, although we probably have different ideas of how to do that.” Liam: “I want the Empire to be healed, Caleb has all these memories of his parents and what they wanted for the world, and he wants that too. It’s clearly not in place now, the system needs to be broken and replaced. That could be a part of Caleb’s sunset. I don’t want Caleb to die, so maybe he can work on that after. As everything starts to shake out and we start heading towards our destiny, Caleb’s just free-floating. He’s not even going after the same thing he started for. So he’s looking at Veth’s family, and Luc specifically, and seeing that’s me, that’s a little boy in the Empire.”

Can’t get over the fact that literally every single person who meets Trent Ikithon is like “Him? Oh his vibes are absolutely rancid, I hate him” immediately after meeting him. Even if they don’t know half the shit he’s done they’re just like “An utter fuckface, absolutely disgusting, next please.” Even the evil people are like “I mean I’m evil, but at least I’m not like that.” Wonderful.

I genuinely do hate to be a curmudgeon about the final because I desperately wanted it to be as great as I thought the first campaign’s final was but I just can’t help but find it lacking in a lot of ways. Honestly, I actually had to go on an hour long walk just to try to clear up how I was feeling on all of this and I’m still pretty conflicted.
Obviously I’m not gonna go messaging the cast about everything I thought was “wrong” with the final, I just want to vent my thoughts. If you think I’m wrong and that the final was fine then by all means ignore this post, this is just me giving my thoughts.
First and foremost, I get what Taliesin was trying to do with Molly. I’m sure the way he saw it, Molly was gone and wasn’t meant to come back. I can imagine this might have been his original idea for Molly, if ever he died in the campaign he would come back as totally new person, which would keep the rest of the M9 inclined to keep him from dying. And if it was, I find that very interesting and would have loved to see more of that but this was the final the M9 did so much to get Molly back and Kingley simply isn’t him. I’m sad that Molly didn’t come back and it’s hard to like Kingley when I know he’s replaced him.
Beau and Yasha’s endings were good. I’m glad Beau was done right by the Cobalt Soul and I’m glad Yasha got to bring Zuala the flowers she’d been collecting the entire campaign. If there’s one complaint I have to make, it’s that I wish we could have explored this part of Yasha more. This was her whole backstory and we may never get to know more about it, only that she killed the former leader of the tribe and is feared/hated by the tribe. As for Beau, she gets a little closure with her dad but I wish there would have been something about going to see her mom and little brother while her dad was in jail, if only to see them while he wasn’t looming in the background.
Fjord gets to go back to the sea and find his mentor and I’m happy for him, meanwhile Jester... just sorta comes with him. Like, yeah, she has her last talks with her parents and Artagan but she didn’t get to do much of her own thing. She road off into the sunset with Fjord and that’s really it. Not even a “well obviously we get married” kind of joke that I can recall. Laura’s even said before that she doesn’t like when fandom acts like her character’s only purpose is to be in a relationship with one character or another, so it just feels wrong that Jester’s whole ending seems to be following Fjord where ever he feels like going.
I’m a bit sad that Cad went out into the world and saw everything it had to offer and then decided that he was just gonna go back to the Grove and spend the next several decades there and never even think of leaving. It’s as though he went out into the world and truly saw nothing worth seeing more of. I could understand missing home and spending a few years there but decades, never feeling any form of wanderlust after seeing all sort of things that he never could have experienced in the Grove. Like, I know his character grew as a person but you could be forgive for mistaking him going home and deciding to never leave again to seem kinda like he’s reverted right back to the man who used to think he’d be in the Grove his entire life. I don’t know, it just feels kinda wrong.
Veth’s ending makes the most sense out of all of them. Again, I’m sad because we didn’t really get a lot of info about what she’d be doing next. Her and Yeza settle down on the coast, open an alchemy shop, and raise Luc. It seems almost too obvious that this would be how her story would end but that’s because we’ve known it’s been coming for months now. Veth has struggled with her want to be with her family and be with the Nein, this is literally the only end that makes sense for her character and I’m glad she got her happy ending.
And then there’s Caleb.
I’ve known for a while that Caleb wouldn’t be allowed to have a happy ending for two reason: 1. All his his love interests were either in love with someone else or war criminals, and more importantly 2. Even after all the good he’s done, he still doesn’t love himself enough to realize he deserves a happy ending.
There was a possibility for Caleb and Essek to share a happy ending. I think Caleb could have convinced him to come back to the Empire to uproot the corruption that still exists in the government. I know Essek was afraid of being caught but Caleb could have used his Transmogrification spell on him and helped him escape to a new life. Yes, I’m certain he had some form of pride in being a drow but it’s already canon that he ultimately had to go into hiding and was forced to wear illusions constantly for his own protection. Transformation or illusion, Essek can never truly be himself anymore and now he can’t even be with Caleb.
As for the “Caleb will be an old man and Essek will be Essek,” that part genuinely annoys me. Orcs rarely live to see the age of 80 while Tieflings can live to be roughly 150 years old, you don’t see Jester and Fjord deciding that they can’t be together because Jester could potentially live twice as long as Fjord. It just feels like sort of a garbage excuse to make Caleb’s end a little bit sadder.
Last bit about Caleb, being that he never does what he set out to do and ends up as a teacher in the very establishment that tortured him and ruined his life. He doesn’t stop the corruption in the Empire, by all accounts they took out Trent Ikithon and then just sorta fucked off to do their own things. Like, I know Veth and Cad were set to go home but I feel like the other should have stuck together long enough to see the corruption uprooted. It’s been their mantra for at least a year out of game, take down the corruption in the Empire, but as long as the Cerberus Assembly exists there will be corruption in the Empire.
Yes, in uncovering and stopping Lucien’s plans, they uncovered something quite a bit bigger then just the corruption in the Empire but that doesn’t mean those troubles disappear now that Aeor is no longer a threat to them.
There are a lot of little things that still frustrate me; story lines that were never properly wrapped up, characters that were never revisited. Maybe I’m just sad to see it all go but it just felt like a lot of the story simply wasn’t over even though the campaign is.

the sounds of rending bruise the planet…
by Anonymous
Caleb’s chin pulls back from Essek’s shoulder and his laughter rings out, bright and burning. “This is the most wonderful surprise! I could kiss you right now!” And for one wild moment Essek thinks he might.
Caleb and Essek finally speak past the metaphors.

campaign 2 episode 131: at dawn we plan
(I feel like I’ve used that one before)
my alarm didn't go off, I came in partway through the BOOK that I am super excited for
I would go to a critrole bookstore. I would fly to LA to go to a critrole bookstore.
"final rest" don't you call it that, I'm sensitive
"think on the stormlord" get high, find a god
"I FUCKING TOLD YOU. DID YOU THINK I WAS LYING?!"
oh that's cool, avoiding them having to sit with their thumbs up their butts for an hour while ashley fights
"I am kord, the stormlord" can you imagine
"that's just travis standing on the map"
"grog's like 'let's go'" man I miss grog
sam stop helping
the first thing these motherfuckers ever do with new feats is use all of them as soon as possible as recklessly as possible, I don't know what she expected
you've heard of the stormlord get ready for stormylaura
travis gets so hype for anything barbarian thing ashley does, it's great
imagine if travis had rolled another barbarian but with an actual intelligence score
(I have to at least get my dailies done in genshin impact, I can do that while ashley kills all her friends)
samuel
point at the wrestlemania sign
"geeze read your SPELLS"
laura's storm acting is the best
sam why are you *like this*
I can't wait until they all get jabbed and they can be at the table again
y'all weren't supposed to ACTUALLY KILL HER
ashley apologizing for swearing, around this bunch
storm head a splode
quick lay hands on self
(does that work)
mala: lesbian immortality
get high, punch a god
"zealot-like" I see you
ashley getting stressed out by people watching :(
"I want to scry on vandran" travis' face
laura blocking travis' face
"50 Shades of Green"
between this and sending astrid a nigerian prince scam, I'm starting to think jester might have a problem with staying out of other people's backstories
"I deserve this frigidityyyyy"
t-pose to assert dominance
tbh I would be upset with jester
like it turned out well so that's good but like. what if it hadn't. what if the scry had been intercepted. also just the fact that he explicitly asked her not to.
I LOVE HER I JUST THINK SHE MADE A POOR DECISION
please make one (1) non-magic friend
(go get kima)
caleb: ikithon is not a temptation I need to worry about
beau: (x) doubt
fjord's pecs cast modify memory
"challenging tidings" episode title
"CALLIOPE ARE YOU UP" "she is NOW"
hey no fuck you sam
"fate/stay night?" "name more anime"
hilarious to me that the ones travis mentioned are from a million years ago. travis you're literally in anime. travis you're one of the most famous anime characters in existence. travis keep up.
who's ready for them to roll initiative on lucien at 1 am
oh it's clairvoyance from skyrim
yes good that's how boulder parchment shears works
oh goddammit
I don't have an attention span tonight
roll to dislocate
"I've been pumping it into you"
okay jester the first time was bad enough, this is. hmm.

Possible bbegs of this campaign:
Avantika- she just came back, so who knows
Uk’otoa- he could probably be the vecna, to Avantika’s Briarwood??
Obann- literally everyone else is coming back, so why not
Trent Ikithon- he’s really evil. We all hate him. He’s involved with some shady stuff, man
Molly/Lucian- we still don’t know what’s going on with him. I’m not saying it’s him, but...
Vess- don’t really trust her. Probably not, but you never know.
Essek- we haven’t seen him in a while. He was kinda of selling the beacons. Who knows what he’s been up to. Sorry Essek stans
The Witch (the one Jester tricked)- um, this one’s a stretch, but I do think that that will come back to bite them in the end
Halas- the 9 did betray AN OLD POWERFUL WIZARD, so that’s still a problem
-
That’s all I have. Any other ideas?

C2E110
Welcome to the emotional rollercoaster that is Campaign 2, Episode 110 of Critical Role: “Dinner with the Devil,” and honestly this could not be a more accurate title. I was so tense about seeing Trent Ikithon again after last episode’s ending and it was for good reason... Spoilers and liveblogs (and maybe a couple of Eiselcross theories) down below!
Tumblr media
- These NordVPN ads are so compelling that I unironically enjoy this saga more than certain Marvel movies
- Caleb telling the story of his parents again... I procrastinated watching this all day because I knew it was going to be painful  😭
- “One: I need Veth” oh my heart... if/when Veth leaves the Mighty Nein permanently, I have a feeling it will take such a toll on Caleb, no matter how much she needs to do it
- I LOVE THE BRENATTO FAMILY SO MUCH LMAO this is so chaotic and wonderful
- “Rounding up, yeah, you have two healers!” asdfghjk it’s true but you shouldn’t say it.jpeg
- PROFESSOR THADDEUS?!??!
- Wait okay, tin foil hat time everyone... what if when Aeor crashed, some of the citizens went underground(?) and formed some sort of icy underground village, and their descendants still live there, and now the Mighty Nein are going to stumble upon some like lost Atlantis village in Eiselcross?? I know this is a very far shot but just the way that Matt describes history and stuff is so cool and gives me so many ideas and conspiracy theories...
- All these Haunted Mansion references, I approve
- YASHA SITTING DOWN BEFORE EODWULF CAN SGHDJKLD GET WRECKED SIR
- “Mostly we are just trying to leave the world better than when we found it” Awe, the Molly reference again
- Wait what, what’s Shattengrod? Why tomb raiders? What’s he on about? (Also, they missed a good opportunity for a “Trent shat in where?” sort of a joke dgdhjkl)
- Trent trying to take credit for Caleb’s growth, and implying that he’s the one who made Caleb strong, instead of Caleb himself........... i hate himmmmm
Tumblr media
- me too laura
- “What about you, though?” “What about me?” has the equal but opposite energy to that one scene from Lost where it goes “What about me?” “What about you?” and I am sobbing over both of them goodnight
- WAIT IS ASTRID PLOTTING TO KILL TRENT FOR THE ASSEMBLY SEAT
- THOSE DOUBLE NATURAL 20S ON INSIGHT CHECKING TRENT, GET THAT LYING BASTARD LETS GO
- oh he was being honest? why do i still not believe him though
- “What’s the most incredible thing you’ve learned from studying [the Beacons]?” “We don’t know yet” WAIT remember that theory where like.... maybe the Assembly were doing bastardized experiments with the Beacons, and that’s like how Lucien came back as Molly, because he was one of the experimented-upon...... what if that’s what Trent is referring to?
- I’m sorry but there’s no way Trent was the one who orchestrated Caleb’s escape.... someone must have gone behind his back to do so maybe?? And now he’s of course here taking credit for it... for everything, I hate him
- “That is your choice.” “Easy as that?” “Of course. But you won’t.” I don’t know why this hit so hard but it did.
- “You could come with us”  😭
- The way that Caleb tensed up when Eodwulf put his hand on his shoulder..... that hurts :((
- “Race you to the top” I love that
- WAIT Beau/Marisha is on to something here..... so apparently Nonagon/Molly was part of a group called the Tomb Takers running from a spellcaster.... what if she’s right and it was Vess that they were running from, AND it was because they escaped the afore-mentioned Beacon experimentation?!?!? I’ve connected the dots (probably not but at least Im having fun dhjdkl)
- I am still on my ‘there’s a lost civilization of Aeor somewhere in Eiselcross’ bs listen I have my tin foil hat and I’m ready to go !!!
- Beau and Jester are having two very different galaxy brain moments right now and I’m living for it sdfghjklkjhgf
- “We go to Antartica and we find an underground city” SEE Travis gets it, I feel validated
- That dinner was literally so rough, Caleb are you okay I’m :((( The confrontation was so well done but so hard to watch... I feel so bad for Caleb, but I’m also glad that he has the Nein as a support now, and it was actually good to see Astrid and Eodwulf again (perhaps unpopular opinion, but I like them a lot.)
- Also it will be interesting (if rough) to see how/if Trent fits into this campaign’s endgame at all

German Vocabulary for fanfiction by a native German Speaker
Hi! I’m new to the Critical Role fandom, and one of the things I love the most about it are Caleb’s occasional slips into Zemnian, in the show as well as in fanfiction. I’ve written lines in fanfic before that weren’t my first language, and I know how much research goes into that. So I thought I’d do my part and put together a list of ready-to-use phrases in Zemnian/German with a more in-depth explanation of the meanings and connotations that might be useful in fanfiction.
Common Phrases:
Guten Tag – Good Day
Guten Morgen – Good Morning
Guten Abend – Good Evening
(Herzlich) Willkommen – Welcome
Bitte – Please
Danke – Thank you
Vielen Dank – Thank you a lot, or thank you in a more formal way
Bitte (sehr) – You’re (very) welcome.
[Yes, ‘please’ and ‘you’re welcome’ share a word, I am very sorry.]
Now for some interesting stuff. Let’s start with terms of endearment:
Ich liebe dich. – I love you. Just as terrible and layered and complicated as in any other language, really.
Du siehst gut aus. – You’re looking fine/handsome.
Du bist so wunderschön. – You are so beautiful.
Du bist so verdammt schön. – You are so damn beautiful.
(Mein) Liebling – (My) Dear, gender neutral, appropriate for lovers or family members. Connotation much like Vex’ahlia uses ‘Dear’, or like the English ‘Sweetheart’.
(Mein) Schatz – (My) Treasure, commonly used like ‘Liebling’ for lovers or very dear family members, also gender neutral. Closest thing German has to ‘Babe’. [It’s also what Gollum calls the ring in the German translation, so make of that what you will.]
Meine Liebe – My Love in female, the ‘Meine’ is not optional here. Could also be used like ‘my dear’ in a grandmotherly sort of way.
Mein Lieber - My Love in male, also needs the possessive pronoun to work. Also could be used like ‘my dear’.
These are the most widely used. Most other German endearments have a connotation of notable playfulness and quirkiness. Think ‘snuggy-buggy’ or ‘honeybuns’, the vibe can range from cute to obnoxious. That said, there are:
Bärchen – Little Bear [‘chen’ is always a diminutive ending and implies a small/cute thing], possible for partners, but also for children. If you call your significant other this your siblings rightfully can and hopefully will give you shit for it until your dying day.
Mausebär – Mouse Bear, I have never heard anyone under 50 use this term seriously.
Schnuckel / Schnucki – No literal translation I could find, but maybe ‘Snuggle’ as a noun comes closest. Think ‘Darling’ but more cuddly.
Hase – Bunny, the most straightforward of these, at least in my corner of the country. Also available in “Häschen” aka little Bunny, has a stronger connotation of youth/cuteness and can in the wrong context border on condescending.
And many, many more. If you want a specific translation of something hit me up, my asks are always open.
Next up, another fun topic: Cursing, expletives and insults.
Scheisse – Shit, like the English shit but even less suitable for polite company. Like, you can accidentally let a quick “shit!!!” slip from your tongue without thinking about it [shit happens], but if a german native speaker is shouting “Scheisse!” they really, intensely mean it.
Verdammt noch mal – ‘Doomed again’, something to mutter under your breath or yell when things aren’t going your way.
Verflucht – ‘Cursed’, a sentiment of “Fuck, this isn’t going well.”
Verfluchte Scheisse – ‘Cursed shit’. Now the Scheisse is verflucht, that’s not good for anyone involved.
Verdammte Kacke – ‘Doomed shit’, but depending on which dialect it’s less, more, or about the same level of intensity as Scheisse.
Verdammte Hacke – ’Doomed garden hoe/pickaxe‘. Hacke here is to Kacke what heck is to hell in English.
Was ist das hier für ‘ne verdammte Scheisse? – What kind of fucked up shit is this here? The sentiment you get after not leaving your house for three consecutive weeks.
Arschloch – Asshole
Sackgesicht – Ball face
Blödes Arschloch – A person that is behaving very inconsiderate of others
Schwachkopf – literally weak head, use like the English idiot.
Lappen – My favorite insult, a bit more modern in origin. Literally means cloth, as in used for cleaning. Use for anyone who half-asses shit or does deliberately stupid shit. Can be used affectionately.
Dummkopf – Stupid head. See ‘Schwachkopf’.
Flasche – Literal meaning is bottle, but can be used like ‘Lappen’.
Fick dich – literally ‘Fuck you’, but more serious, especially with older generations. Can be used playfully between good friends and by teenagers who are trying to be cool, but has altogether a more vicious connotation than the English ‘Fuck you’
And many more. Again, if you need anything specific I will do my best to translate, privately or on anon if required.
And now for some Widowgast specific Vocabulary:
Feuerball – Fire ball
Hausbrand – House Fire
Meine Eltern – my parents
Mama/Mutti – Mom
Papa/Vati – Dad
Nein, bitte nicht – No, please not/please don’t
Hör auf damit – Stop that
Ich werde Trent Ikithon bei lebendigem Leibe verbrennen – I will burn Trent Ikithon alive
Es tut mir Leid -  I am sorry
Es tut mir so Leid – I am so sorry
Es tut mir unendlich Leid – I am infinitely sorry
Ich hasse mich – I hate myself
Brandschutzbeauftragter – the person in charge of the fire regulations in building/workplace security

Febuwhump Day 21
AO3
Today's prompt was torture, but the one I planned to write just didn't pan out the way I wanted it to.  I went with Alt 4: "Identity Reveal" instead.
I suppose it could be read as a little bit Shadogast-ish?  It's open to interpretation
No specific TW's today!
“You... said you worked with Trent?”
Essek nodded, looking down into his mug.  It was still so hard to make eye contact with Caleb.  They had been travelling together for days, and he had thought it would be easier as they spent more time in the ruins.  He had been mistaken.
That, it seemed, was nothing new.
“I... I only dealt with him if Ludinus was otherwise occupied”
Caleb hummed in understanding, and a memory resurfaced from before- well, before Aeor.
“I believe Trent it also aware”
“That guy’s a fuck hole”
“You’re not wrong”
“I- I believe Jester has mentioned before that you are acquainted with Ikithon?”
Caleb was looking at him now, Essek can feel clever blue eyes boring into his skin, burning it.  Perhaps that was a bad question to ask?  The entire Nein seem to hate Ikithon, which he could understand of course but...
“I am more than acquainted with Trent Ikithon, he is the reason I am who I am”
Essek couldn’t help the way his head whipped around to look at Caleb now, being caught in the blue gaze again.  He looked... sad, almost wistful.  What could cause that kind of reaction.
“I- I am afraid I do not follow”
“Hmm... no, I suppose- well" Caleb looked away again, off towards where the others were setting up a fire “do you recall, quite some time ago now, the Volstrucker- Scourger you had in the dungeon at the Bastion?”
“I do”
“I- well, quite simply put, I was one of them”
Essek blinked, confusion swirling around in his mind.  He had met other Scourgers since the woman who had stabbed Caleb.  Ikithon had brought at least one with him every time they had met, and stories of their brutality... their cruelty, had been seeping into the Dynasty for years.  They were powerful, and loyal only to Ikithon if the rumors were to be believed.
There was no way that Caleb could be one of them.
“Forgive me but- I was under the impression that they all... work for Trent”
“They do” he smiled, but it was a bitter thing “I am his only failure”
“I do not believe you could be considered any kind of failure”
He said it without meaning to, and felt the tips of his ears warm, but Caleb only shrugged, looking down into his tea.
“When I said that the difference between us was thinner than a razor, I meant it literally.  I did... I have done horrible things, all in the name of knowledge”
“I started a war Caleb, I doubt you can-”
“I murdered my parents Essek, burned them in their beds”
He stared, unable to form any kind of coherent response.
Caleb... Caleb? The man who would do anything for the weird little family he ran around with?  The man who looked at Essek, in his greed and his hubris, and showed him only kindness?  Who even now, was sitting quietly, allowing him as much time as he needed to process this.  Somehow Essek knew that if he got up now, and walked away, Caleb wouldn’t stop him.  Caleb, who... like himself, had done horrible things in the name of knowledge.   Who in all the hells was Essek to judge?
“Tell me why”
His voice was much calmer than he felt, and Caleb looked at him with clear surprise.
“Tell you... why I murdered my parents”
“Tell me why.  You know why I gave away the beacons, tell me why you killed them”
Caleb seemed to consider this for a moment, before he nodded slowly.
“Alright, well... It began in a small town called Blumenthal...”

Fate-Touched C2 character?
I've been considering this recently, and I'd like the community's input on my theories. I think it is a relatively common assumption that at least one member of the Mighty Nein is Fate-Touched, which can help explain how they get into these crazy situations and why their actions impact the world around them so heavily. I’ve been thinking about who might be the Fate-Touched of the Mighty Nein.
For those who don't know, in Matt's world's a Fate-Touched person is one who naturally causes the strings of fate to gravitate towards them, causing large events to happen around them and causing their actions to have a larger effect than they might otherwise. For example, why did Kylre the Nergaliid go crazy and start creating husks at the ONE circus performance the Mighty Nein happened to attend? The bending of the strings of fate could be the explanation. It can also help explain why this "handful of wandering souls" was drawn together in the first place.
Here's a summary of my personal conclusions on which member of TM9 is the most likely to be Fate-Touched, more in-depth analysis below the cut:
Beau: definitely possible, but she would HATE it
Caduceus: very unlikely
Caleb: Seems like he would be, but is definitely not due to C1
Jester: most likely imo
Veth: probably not
Fjord: possibly, but less likely than Jes or Beau
Yasha: maybe it's fate, maybe it's mystery
Beau: There is definitely some evidence that points towards Beau being Fate-Touched. Before she was even born, her father's deal with Isharnai put her in contact with a huge force of twisting fate. She was already destined to have an unhappy childhood, but then the strings of fate may have pulled her into a different direction. Her father could have chosen to send her off and punish her a number of different ways, but she just so happened to be sent off to the Cobalt Soul, an organization that (though she would refuse to admit it until later) gave her a perfect opportunity for her to grow and flourish. Later, through unknown circumstances, she found herself in the company of Fjord and Jester, coincidentally the day before they met the rest of the group. In the more recent days of the Mighty Nein, she has become an extremely influential Face of the group, and has been able to sway the minds and actions of powerful figures in the world. However, I feel like Beau would really hate the idea of being Fate-Touched, which could be a very interesting thing to watch her explore and come to terms with.
Caduceus: Cad seems like the least likely to be Fate-Touched to me. Firstly, he didn't join the Mighty Nein until later, so that wouldn't explain all their strange encounters early on. In addition, he is an incredibly passive person by nature and generally seems more happy to go with the flow of things and observe the world, tampering with it as little as possible. Though he has an incredible calming effect and is an integral member of the Mighty Nein, most of what he does tends to be on a smaller scale and more personal than world-changing.
Caleb: If you consider C2 as its own entity, Caleb is a very strong possibility. He was a poor boy from a tiny town with almost nothing going for him, except for a strong aptitude for the arcane. The strings of fate brought him to the Academy, where he was able to study for many years, but they also brought him to the terrible and powerful Trent Ikithon, who seems to be the kind of person who would have a finger on many different strings. Since leaving, he randomly met another wandering soul, Nott, who ended up being a perfect complement to him without either of them realizing it. After joining the Mighty Nein, he has been able to influence powerful mages to support and teach them (Yussa and Essek), create entirely new, world-changing spells, and literally return a religious artifact full of souls to it's rightful home. However, (C1 Spoilers) since Vax was Fate-Touched, it seems unlikely that Matt would choose another one of Liam's characters. It seems a little unfair to the other players and puts a lot of pressure on Liam again. If that weren't true, Caleb would 100% be my pick for the Fate-Touched of the group.
Jester: Jessie is my personal guess for the Fate-Touched. As Caleb said, she has the ability to change people. At a very young age, Artagan, an incredibly powerful and ancient entity from another plane of existence, was drawn to her even though she rarely left her hotel. A young girl, who had no friends other than her mother and Bluude, literally created a cult and facilitated the rise of a demigod. Unknowingly, she impacted the lives of hundreds of people presumably across the entire world, all of whom were brought under the banner of the Traveller. In addition, she is the one who brought the Mighty Nein together. She met up with Fjord in the Menagerie Coast, it is likely (though not confirmed afaik) that she initiated contact with Beau, and she was the one who began speaking to Caleb and Nott in the tavern and invited them to attend the carnival as a group. Since being in the Mighty Nein, she has gained the respect and support of a major crime lord, gotten kidnapped by a group of human traffickers, and conned an ancient hag into freeing her friend. It would be very fun to watch her embrace her role and use her influence as a Fate-Touched to wreak chaos onto everything she touches.
Veth: I don't think it is too likely that Vethis the Fate-Touched. There are a few large events that could be explained by it, such as her family in particular being kidnapped by the goblins, meeting up with Caleb, and her husband being the one chosen to work on the Beacon. However, though some large events have occurred around her, none of her actions have had quite the weight that a Fate-Touched would have. As evidenced in her offer to Isharnai, she thinks on a smaller scale, and for her the world is only as large as the people she loves; outside of that, she has no interest in impacting fate or the lives of others.
Fjord: Fjord has a few points towards being Fate-Touched, but it's not as likely for him as it is for others. First of all, he was one of very few chosen of Uk'atoa. To have an ancient, powerful Titan from another age take an interest in you definitely could be a result of the bending of fate. In addition, randomly finding the Cloven Crystal Eye of Uk'atoa could be more than a coincidence. Another recent, strange "coincidence" is the connection of the name Stone to the sister family of Clay. There has been a lot of speculation on what this could be about, and if there is any meaning to it, and Fjord being the Fate-Touched could definitely give some explanation. Personally, I would love to be wrong and see Fjord given this gift and responsibility, as he is my favorite of the Mighty Nein, but I don't think it's going to happen.
Yasha: Our friendly neighborhood barbarian has a few pieces of evidence to point towards her being Fate-Touched, but many of these could also be explained away by a yet-to-be-revealed aspect of her backstory. There is still a lot we don't know about Yasha and her past, so nothing can be assumed. Firstly, Obann found her and made her a part of the Angels of Irons, a cult which consisted of incredibly powerful figures including ancient, (almost) unkillable champions of evil gods. Then, she was saved and brought under the protection of the Stormlord, gaining his favor. The most compelling piece of evidence comes from Obann's explanation of how he chose the members for his cult: they were all unkillable, so they could perform the deadly ritual to break the chains. Yasha believes this means it may just be easier to ressurect her if she dies, but we have not gotten any more explanation about it. This draws a strong parallel to the temporarily unkillable Fate-Touched of C1, who was kept alive by their god for a very specific purpose.
So yeah that’s how I’ve been spending quarantine, theorizing about esoteric ideas of fate for fictional characters because I miss them. Thoughts? Counter-arguments? Questions, comments, concerns?
